Making waves in Charlton

A

fter starring in a plethora of celebrated local plays, Louise Gaul has decided to prove her stage acumen in a different way this year by taking on the job of director for the Alexandra Player’s upcoming production of The Deep Blue Sea. Having first found the local theatre company on social media, Louise - who lives in Plumstead has been a member of the group for over five years and playfully told me, “I ended up being in Daisy Pulls It Off in 2012 and they haven’t been able to get rid of me ever since.”

But the production of the classic Terrence Rattigan play The Deep Blue Sea at the Alexandra Hall in February will mark her directorial debut.

And it’s become a bit of a passion project. Louise first came across the text after stumbling upon the 2011 film adaptation, which starred Tom Hiddleston.

“I’ve always been an admirer of Tom Hiddleston’s work, so I was

going back over old films.” Louise explained, “The story was so heartbreaking. It was one of those films that really touched me.”

Louise ordered the script and after reading it immediately started to think about how it could be staged locally. But it wasn’t until she joined the Charlton based theatre group that her dream came a bit closer.

“I’ve had The Deep Blue Sea on my desk for the last five or six years. When I first joined the group I said to the chairman Roy Moore that I wanted to do it one day and he said it was a favourite of his too.”

Other productions have taken precedence since then, but this year the classic love story was chosen. So Louise has stepped up to the plate and is reveling in the challenge. “I’ve really been led by my gut; I’ve gone with everything my gut has told me and my heart has told me and it seems to be flowing quite well.” Louise told me, “It’s a fascinating process.”

The play follows Hester Collier who is married to a high court

judge but embarks on an affair with a much younger RAF pilot called Freddie. “It’s one of those torturous love stories, where she is constantly looking for more.”

Louise joked, “It’s a lovely twisted love story for valentines day.”

The action takes place in the sitting room of a furnished flat in a tenement block in the north west of London, over the course of a single day. It begins with the discovery of a body lying in front of a gas fire.

Louise - who also does all of the publicity for the club – extensively researched both the play and the playwright. She told me it is considered to be one of Rattigan’s best works and is also thought to be semi-autobiographical. The tragic story has obvious parallels with that of Rattigan’s ex-lover, Kenneth Morgan, who committed suicide in 1949.

Louise and her eight-strong cast are in final rehearsals for The Deep Blue Sea, which will be staged at The Alexandra Hall, Charlton from 14-17 February. www.alexandraplayers.org.uk

A

major international exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery brings together for the first time over fifty of Cézanne’s portraits from collections across the world, including works, which have never been on public display

in the UK.

But art lovers can take a look at the works without having to venture across the river, on the big screen at Greenwich Picturehouse on 29 and 31 January.

The Exhibition on Screen is dedicated to Paul Cézanne, one of the most influential artists of the

nineteenth century whose unique method of building form with colour and analytical approach to nature influenced the art of Cubists, Fauvists, and successive generations of avant-garde artists.

The exhibition also contemplates the extent to which particular subjects shaped the development

of his technique. Paintings on display range from multiple portraits of himself and his wife, Hortense Fiquet, Cézanne’s portrayals of his Uncle Dominique, dating from the 1860s, through to his final portraits of the gardener Vallier, who helped in his studio at Les Lauves, Aix-en-Provence.

As apart of the Exhibition on Screen you can hear from experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d’Orsay Paris, as well as correspondence from the artist himself. The film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least known of all the impressionists.

Trump in Greenwich!

A

udiences in Greenwich will be treated to a controversial double bill next month as two very different works are staged on consecutive evenings.

Mistero Buffo, Dario Fo’s classic religious shocker, will follow Trumpagedon - a satire about the president of the United States of America.

When Simon Jay first created Trumpagedon in 2016, ‘The Donald’ was a mere presidential candidate. Now the leader of the free world – who recently proclaimed himself as a ‘genius’ - is even more of a gift to satirists.

And so despite the fact that 1,862,364 people signed a petition against Donald J. Trump making a state visit to the UK, he’s doing a show at Greenwich Theatre instead!

to be Donald Trump, but is instead Simon Jay, portraying the Twitter loving president in a show described as ‘absurdist satire’.

And so as the real president of the United States concentrates on riling the North Korean leader via social media, we can grill his stand-in.

The show takes the form of an improv session, in which Jay's Trump answers whatever questions the audience wants to throw at him. It’s also interspersed with skits and routines, all of which results in a hilarious, if not petrifying night of entertainment.

Audiences at Greenwich Theatre will then be able to see one of the most controversial and popular spectacles in postwar European theatre when Mistero Buffo is performed on 4 February.

Fo, Mistero Buffo is a political exploration of popular Medieval Mysteries, consisting of several scenes re-imagining stories from the Bible and establishing new protagonists against religious rule. Its broadcast in Italy prompted the Vatican to denounce it as "the most blasphemous show in the history of television".

The one-man masterpiece has been given a timely re-staging

by Rhum and Clay Theatre Company in a physical tour de- force, packing in over a hundred characters and taking a hilarious and controversial view of the Bible's best known stories.

Mistero Buffo is a series of brief monologues with Biblical themes. The protagonist speaks against the religious establishment in a state of frenzy and ecstasy, seeking a vengeful redemption and recognition by the public.

Controversial yet powerful, disturbing yet affirmative, tragic yet extremely comical, this play is meant to shock and unsettle the audience.

Following the sold out successes of TESTOSTERONE, Hardboiled and 64 Squares, New Diorama Associate Ensemble Rhum and Clay return with this hilarious adaptation of a European classic. Performed by Julian Spooner and Directed by Nicholas Pitt.

Edward II with a different personality Lazarus Theatre have chosen to begin their yearlong residency at Greenwich Theatre with their highly acclaimed modern interpretation of Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II.

And audiences in the area won’t want to miss this tremendous interpretation of the classic play.

The production gained plaudits from its run at the Tristan Bates Theatre last year, but on the bigger stage in the main auditorium at Greenwich Theatre, the epic play takes on a completely different personality. Intense, intelligent and visceral, Ricky Duke’s cleverly modernised adaptation perfectly juxtaposes the old and new, bringing Marlowe’s homoerotic tale contemporary significance. A stark set, white lighting and modern office wear for the entire cast - except Queen Isabella (Alicia

Charles) - help to hammer home the fact that we could easily be watching a 21st century political thriller, were it not for the exquisite language beautifully delivered by all.

We are faced with an England where the King is dead and his son Edward II (Timothy Blore) who is obsessed with a banished lover, Gaveston (Oseloka Obi)– is not trusted by his lords. A political tug of war ensues in which Marlowe cleverly interweaves a comment on the British social class system.

It’s a full throttle and energetic production, which boasts an excellent ensemble cast - who not only add vigor to the traditional old English language but who also deliver the prose with a pace, which is easily understandable for all.

Stand out performances come

from Oseloka Obi, who gives a sensitive portrayal of Gaveston - Alicia Charles, whose Isabella is wonderfully forthright in a world where woman are mostly overlooked and Timothy Blore, who manages to extract a lovable quality from the mad and desperate Edward II. The final scene - in which there is a bit of gore and another shift in power - could do with being a bit slicker (the new young king doesn’t quite get the rhythm of the iambic pentameter right) - so audiences can leave feeling the exhilaration they have for the rest of the performance, but this is a minor misdeed, in an otherwise excellent production.

e are all celebrating the re-opening and re-building of London Bridge Station – but to my mind something is missing. I see very little mention of the man who started it all – George Landmann the engineer to the London and Greenwich Railway.

He was the one who built and opened the very first station at London Bridge and whose brick arches still carry trains between London Bridge and Greenwich. It has been claimed that his 1836 viaduct is the biggest brick structure in the world - but why do we seem to know so little about the man who built it?

George Landmann was born in Woolwich in 1779. His family lived in the building on the Arsenal site which was the original Royal Military Academy.

His father had been head hunted by the British government from France to teach the theory of fortifications and artillery to the military cadets at Woolwich. Isaac Landman’s origins remain unresearched

The man who built the railway but his background was the dark world of European spies and strategists. In his Woolwich childhood at the Royal Military Academy George was surrounded by important scientists, and the military elite – and others then famous like the transvestite spy and swordfighter, Chevalier D’Eon. His father, by the way, as Professor of Fortification was an expert on brick arches.

George joined the Royal Engineers as a Second Lieutenant when he was 16 and was first posted to Plymouth.

He began to learn his job and did some repair work on fortifications. Two years later he was posted to Canada where he had all sorts of adventures - he later wrote a book about them. He built gun emplacements out on the border with the United States in places it took a week to reach by canoe up the Ottawa River; he worked on the construction of the St Lawrence Canal; he visited New York when it was a small town, travelling by sledge – and much much more. And in Canada he hob nobbed with Royalty – Prince George, the future father of Queen Victoria. And he was still only in his teens.

He seems to have got married – he was to have three children, but the marriage went wrong and he never mentions it in his autobiography.

In 1805 he was posted to Gibraltar and he liked that a lot better. It was the time of the Peninsula war in Spain and he was eventually sent to join the conflict.

His autobiography covers his childhood

and youth but it finishes during his time in Spain. What went on next is thus rather unclear and buried in military records.

He left Spain ill and came back in England as a senior Royal Engineer.

Initially he was in Gravesend where he lived in what is now the Royal Clarendon Hotel, he was then sent to Durham and then to Ireland.

He sold his commission and left the army in 1824 – and that is where all official biographical notes and his obituaries end. They seem to assume that for the next thirty years he did nothing – but, we shall see! Why did he leave army?? It appears that he resigned following the refusal of a posting to Ceylon. What the military record does not tell us that he was living with a lady called Harriett Hayward – the daughter of the man in charge of flint production (for guns) in Brandon, Suffolk and that they later had a daughter. It may, or may not, be significant that his

household, with Harriett, included his children by his abandoned first wife.

He became a consulting civil engineer.

One of his friends from childhood was William Congreve, soldier and inventor of rockets. Congreve was interested in and active in the early gas industry and was a director of several gas companies.

And so -- we come to the London and Greenwich Railway. This is not the place to go into a lot of detail about it – perhaps another time. It was the first powered railway in London and the first commuter railway. Spa Road Station in Bermondsey was the first station opened – and the first in the south of England. The railway ran from London Bridge in 1836 at first to Deptford, and then to Greenwich. There were plans to extend it through to Kent, and also to a ferry at Deptford but that never happened. While it was built George was living in Crooms Hill but in 1840 he moved to Hackney and then, when his first wife died, he married Harriett.

George Landmann eventually retired to live in Hackney, surrounded by his family and to write a gazetteer of the world yes, the world, all of it.

The Greenwich railway was a great achievement. We take all those brick arches for granted. They have carried our trains now for 182 years – that’s a minimum of eight trains an hour, on most days and they are trains of a size and carrying numbers of passengers which would hardly have been believed possible in 1836. That has to be quite something!

A walk, a pint and a bowl of chips are the ultimate treat on a wintery Sunday. And when the venue is a proper old-fashioned boozer, it feels like a tradition that must be upheld.

Despite being part of a chain, the Rose and Crown in Greenwich stills feels like a local. The Axminster carpets and ornate fireplace set beneath a big screen television, pretty much sums up the juxtaposition of old and new.

But what makes the Greene King pub even better is that the menu is reasonably priced and actually not too limited.

My companion and I ordered the obligatory bowl of chips to go with our pints of cider (well I am from Somerset, so it’s the law that I drink cider and not beer)

"The atmosphere within the Rose and Crown is just so homely and as it’s also dog friendly, it feels a bit like having a drink in someone’s living room" and we also shared a portion of cod goujons and one of barbecue chicken wings.

Now, I’m not going to pretend it was fine dining but the three little platters were very satisfying. The chicken wings were wonderfully sweet and sticky, the cod goujons succulent and the thick cut chips the perfect naughty accompaniment.

GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SING-ALONG The Ferrier Operative Society is hosting one of their popular ‘Come and Sing’ Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. This time it’s the Pirates of Penzance.

People can come along and sing, or just watch, and are welcome to come to the afternoon rehearsal to go through the music beforehand.

The Ferrier Operatic Society was founded in 1973 in Eltham and has been producing shows and concerts annually ever since. The company meets for music rehearsals on Thursdays at Mycenae House, 90 Mycenae Rd, Blackheath SE3 7SE, and in the Eltham area for staging rehearsals.

New members are warmly welcomed for both Ferrier Operative Society’s shows and concerts up to four weeks from the start of rehearsals.

There’s a drop in cafe for seniors every Thursday from 1pm-4pm. There’s also several knitting projects (you don’t have to knit, it’s just a chance for seniors to socialise and meet new people). In a recent project, knitters made scarves for WSUP in Woolwich: a grass-roots community project supporting service users experiencing homelessness, vulnerable housing, and recovery from illness or addiction, and for those seeking advice, advocacy and friendship.

Mycenae House has extended the Men in Sheds initiative (Age UK Bromley and Greenwich), running every Wednesday from 12 noon-3pm. The inspirational project is a chance for older men to get together to undertake minor DIY projects and to make new friends.

WALK OF LIFE Greenwich Get Walking runs weekly led walks starting from various points around the Royal Borough of Greenwich encompassing local green spaces including the Green Chain, the Thames Path and areas of Greenwich's rich heritage.

Creative approach at Leah Lodge Residents at Leah Lodge in Blackheath have benefitted from a creative approach to help prevent falls and injury.

Team members noticed that the people living at the care home sometimes found it difficult to remember their walking frame which led to inconsistent use and some avoidable tumbles.

Each zimmer is adjusted to suit individual needs so it is important that people use the right one. The team suggested that if each walking frame looked a bit different it would help people recognise their own more easily.

This resulted in an initiative, ‘Pimp my zimmer’ where team members have worked with each person to decorate their walking frame with items that reflect their interests, hobbies and personality. rue to form, December had a mix of cold, freezing conditions but as Christmas approached changed to misty, wet and milder weather. January can be the coldest month - snow and ice often push into southern areas; but this depends on the weather systems coming in from the Atlantic.

If the weather is co-operative - a variety of planting can be done; new hedging shrubs/trees if needed, displays of heathers to brighten areas of the garden.

Fruit and deciduous trees including roses plus evergreen shrubs are planted during January when growth is at a standstill. But if conditions are freezing or very wet, planting will have to be postponed.

Christmas houseplants will need some attention; they are often neglected during the festivities, then begin to look a little sad – and are thrown away in January. But with a little care and attention they make cheerful additions to a permanent plant collection. Azaleas prefer cool

conditions and can live outside in containers. These plants need ericaceous compost (available at garden centres) and they dislike tap water - which eventually turns their leaves yellow; use rainwater or filtered water and Azaleas will be happier. Allow Hyacinth foliage to die back naturally after flowering; water sparingly, this will allow the bulb to build up the energy required to flower next year; plant in the garden or window box. Poinsettias can be more of a challenge and need to be kept inside - out of drafts and direct sunlight. Top up with fresh compost, keep moist but do not over water (in winter); the Poinsettia should survive as a handsome green foliage houseplant – it eventually loses its red leaves (bracts).

January is the month of evergreens – there is Holly, with its unmistakable spiky leaves and bright red berries; also Skimmia and Cotoneaster both familiar shrubs in the winter garden. Butcher’s broom (pictured) is a striking, compact shrub with glossy red berries (in

autumn) although rarely used in planting schemes. Christmas box and ivy become more noticeable with their gorgeous shiny blue-black berries during the winter months. The Christmas rose offers pure white flowers featuring clusters of pale

yellow stamens. Easy to grow, it will live happily in a window box or container - providing an attractive display with seasonal bulbs such as crocus, miniature daffodils and ivy.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich on 22nd January 2018 made the above-mentioned Orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended. The Order will come into operation on 29th January 2018.

2. The general effect of the Orders will be to: (a) split the existing Westcombe Park (W) Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) into three CPZs, to be called Westcombe Park (W) CPZ, Caletock Estate (CT) CPZ and Blackheath Standard (BS) CPZ; (b) retain double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions where they are currently located and provide additional double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions in the following locations:

(i) BS CPZ: In the north to south arm of the access road to the rear of Nos. 2 to 26 Old Dover Road and at the junction of that road with Old Dover Road;

(ii) CT CPZ: At all road junctions within the CPZ; and

(iii) W CPZ: At all road junctions within the CPZ and adjacent to No. 135 Westcombe Hill; (c) (i) provide that the new CPZ to be called Blackheath Standard (BS) CPZ will include the roads and lengths of roads listed in Schedule 1 to this Notice and will have CPZ hours of between 9am and 6.30pm on Mondays to Saturdays inclusive. Single yellow line waiting restrictions

that operate during the CPZ hours will be provided in every length of road in the CPZ not occupied by parking places or ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions;

(B) permit holders / 2-hours free parking places in Mycenae Road and Stratheden Road opposite Nos. 12 to 20;

(C) 2-hours free parking places in Old Dover Road; and

(D) disabled persons parking places in: (1) Stratheden Road, outside Nos. 6 to 8 Stratheden Parade; and (2) Vanbrugh Park, outside Nos. 51 and 52;

(iii) provide on the footway on the north-west side of Shooters Hill Road:

(A) permit holders parking places outside Nos. 1 to 13 Shooters Hill Road; and

(B) a disabled, persons parking place outside No. 5 Shooters Hill Road;

[Note: these parking places are not within the BS CPZ boundary.]

(iv) provide that the parking places specified in sub-paragraph (c)(ii)(D) and (c)(iii)(A) above will operate 'at any time' and the parking places specified in sub-paragraph (c)(ii)(A), (B) or (C) or (c)(iii)(B) above will operate during the CPZ hours; and

(v) provide that all other parking places within BS CPZ not referred to in sub-paragraph (c)(ii) above will remain unchanged other than parking places previously available to W CPZ permit holders will instead be available to BS CPZ permit holders; (d) (i) provide that the new CPZ to be called Caletock Estate (CT) CPZ will include the roads and lengths of roads listed in Schedule 2 to this Notice and will have CPZ hours of between 9am and 6.30pm on Mondays to Saturdays inclusive. Single yellow line waiting restrictions that

operate during the CPZ hours will be provided in every length of road in the CPZ not occupied by parking places or ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions;

(ii) remove the free parking places from Armitage Road and Glenister Road and replace them with:

(iv) provide that the parking places specified in sub-paragraph (d)(ii) above will operate between 9am and 8pm on Mondays to Saturdays inclusive; and

(v) provide that all other parking places within CT CPZ not referred to in sub-paragraph (d)(ii) or (iii) above will remain unchanged other than parking places previously available to W CPZ permit holders will instead be available to CT CPZ permit holders; (e) (i) provide that the reduced size Westcombe Park (W) CPZ will include the roads and lengths of roads listed in Schedule 3 to this Notice and will retain CPZ hours of between 9am and 6.30pm on Mondays to Saturdays inclusive.
