Halls well at Blackheath B

lackheath Halls will undergo an extensive capital development programme next year, which will ensure the venue maintains its place as one of the most esteemed in the area.

Leading the project, Director of Blackheath Halls, Gemma Okell is no stranger to ambitious arts ventures, having worked extensively in the industry for the last 15 years.

Originally from Somerset, Gemma joined Blackheath Halls back in April and has reveled in the high level of community involvement the venue garners.

Gemma told me, “It feels like there’s lots and lots of people to meet and everyone has been really good about coming and introducing themselves; telling me about their specialist interests and what they think should happen here, as well as filling me in on the history.”

After studying English and music at Sheffield University and completing a Masters degree in York, Gemma began her career in Bath working on the International Music and Literature festival.

Tenure at the Salisbury Arts Centre followed and resulted in a very successful period as Director of the acclaimed Wiltshire venue.

But it’s going to be a very challenging first year at Blackheath Halls for the Director, who will have to manage the fund raising for the capital development project as well as facilitate the planned six month closure, while maintaining a programme of events throughout.

Gemma explained, “It’s going to make it much better for audiences and artists, hopefully, but it means there’s quite a lot of fundraising and also quite a lot of fine tuning before the plans are finalised.”

Gemma tells me that proposals include introducing retractable raked seating into the Great Hall, “It will be great for when we do things that need to have proper sight lines, so for example, at the moment we only do children’s theatre upstairs in the Recital Room, which is much smaller, but if we want to do a big children’s production, you’ll be able to see even if you’re a little five-yearold.”

Gemma assures me that the annual community opera - a mainstay in the local calendar - which involves up to 200 performers, both professional and amateur, from the surrounding

area, is still scheduled to go ahead next year, but an alternative venue will be found.

And the Director has a huge support network, with The Friends Association - which was initially set up to help fund the Halls now boasting over 500 members and even scheduling their own programme of events.

But Gemma is also keen to get those who perhaps are less well versed in the goings on at Blackheath Halls involved.

“One of the things I’m really keen to do is to ensure that we are spreading the word about what we do beyond the immediate environment and actually, there are a lot of people who haven’t heard about what the Halls do and who might be interested. At the moment, I’m trying to have lots of conversations, both with people who know and love the place and those people who are potential, future audience members, but haven’t necessarily been involved yet.”

And alongside that pledge, Gemma is continuing to work with the young people in the area, while maintaining the Hall’s association with Trinity Laban, who use the venue for their extensive rehearsal and performance programme.

“It’s wonderful to come into the building during the day and hear people rehearsing.” Gemma enthused, “It’s really exciting.

There are young people who are making music and experimenting with new ideas.”

And the work doesn’t stop there either, with Gemma telling me she intends to set up a young promoter/producers group to encourage the next generation to take up the baton, so to speak, and enjoy a career in the arts.

It’s an exciting time for the team at Blackheath Halls and Gemma is very keen to ensure the future has the community at its core.

“For me, what I want to be able to do is facilitate an opportunity to create a venue that’s really based on the local character. I’d really like to make more of the relationship we have with Trinity Laban, more of the connection we have with the Friends; there are so many fantastic artists and musicians that are living locally.

I’m also really interested in what the venue looks like to people in their late teens. What are the opportunities?”

Multi-award winning choreographer Wayne McGregor CBE and his company of dancers, Company Wayne McGregor, will bring an exciting new project to Trinity Laban on 26 and 27 January.

What does it mean to write your own life-story? For twentyfive years, Wayne McGregor has been making choreography that interrogates life through the experience of the body, moving intelligently in space and time. His practice has been far-reaching and sought out collaborators from a diverse range of artistic and scientific fields to investigate the nature of embodied cognition.

Now McGregor turns his attention to the body as archive, as he embarks on a cycle of choreographic portraits illuminated by the sequencing of his own genome. The first of these studies, Autobiography, is an abstract meditation on aspects of self, life, writing, refracting both remembered pasts and speculative futures.

Autobiography marks the first piece McGregor will create in his own recently opened space, Studio Wayne McGregor. Mitford's coming to Greenwich There’s one family who had an unusual and yet extremely interesting influence on the 20th century. The six Mitford sisters had varied lives that were bizarrely synchronized with major historical events and their intricate relationships are explored in a new play, which will be performed at Greenwich Theatre from 12-14 January, writes Nicky Sweetland...

The one-woman play entitled simply The Mitfords is written by Gail Louw, who is best know for her multi award-winning World War Two biopic Blonde Poison.

But choosing to depict a family of British aristocrats for her new play was a very different project and Gail said: “What’s really interesting about the Mitfords is the impact they had on the 20th century; they were very much players in that century.”

The play follows four of the siblings, and Gail explained: “The more I read, the more I realised there’s just so much of

interest about these women. Of all my plays, I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed the process of reading and learning about it more than with The Mitfords; I’ve found it absolutely fascinating. I hope audiences thoroughly enjoy the theatrically of it all and that they find these sisters just as fascinating and captivating I do.”

Diana was married to Oswald Mosley and a lifelong fascist.

Unity was a great close friend of Hitler’s. Jessica was a dyed-in-the-wool communist.

Deborah became Duchess of Devonshire. Nancy was a well-loved novelist. And Pamela kept chickens.

And the decision to have just one actress play four of the sisters threw up more challenges to the production.

“It’s a really interesting theatrical process to see how you can make sense of these four sisters.” Gail explains that they all have the same voice and so it’s vital the audience can distinguish between them. “How do you ensure the

audience knows who is who? You want the audience to engage.”

Gail credits much of the accomplishment of the play to director John Burrows and RADA graduate Heather Long, who has the enviable task of portraying the astonishing characters. “The director, at the beginning, said this

isn’t a play it’s a world. It has an arc; it has a journey that we take.”

The story is about strong, bold women and their search for meaning, as the sisters adopted fiercely opposing views on all things political, clashing over their opinions on humanity, communism, fascism and Nazism.

“I tend to write about people who are little bit on the edge and not massively well known,” Gail

explained, “I write about people who are massively flawed.”

Audiences are invited to spend an evening in the company of these intelligent, brave women who battled heartache and heartbreak to make themselves noticed in the name of their beliefs.

A witty take on the Wolves of Willoughby Chase The Wolves of Willoughby Chase begins in the forest with wolves howling and atmospheric lighting setting the scene for a night of Gothic horror. My companion whispered, ‘Will it be scary?’ Slowly and mysteriously the cast appeared amongst the trees reciting a tale of terror before leader of the pack Adam Elliot rolled his eyes in a Larry Grayson style.

‘No’, I replied, writes Michael Holland...

I remember Elliot from last year’s hilarious Hound of the Baskervilles and realised this was going to be an evening of much mirth rather than marauding murderers.

‘Believe in the dawn and the night will soon be over’ a little girl is told as she reads her Once Upon A Time book, so we know that this idyllic family scene at

Willoughby Hall will soon change.

And change it does: Bonnie’s parents leave for warmer climes so her mother can get well; her orphan cousin Sylvia is coming to keep her company, as well as Miss Sleighcarp, the evil governess with her eye on the estate and the money - ‘My heart beats with abandoned glee’, hisses Sleighcarp on her arrival.

Drop in a double-dealing lawyer and Mrs Brisket, the proprietress of a school for orphaned girls, and you have the makings of a Victorian melodrama. And, of course, the wolves. Don’t forget the wolves.

This adaptation by Russ Tunney from Joan Aiken’s book has been torn asunder by this troupe of comic ne’er do wells as they have us laughing at children being abused with beatings and starvation and being locked away in cupboards. There is the hilarious wig coming off

and the stray goose feather falling from a hat and we don’t know if this is part of the plot or mismanaged mishaps. But we understand that with so many characters for just five actors there will be moments when one person’s two roles cannot be on stage at the same time, and this farcical fun is as good as it can get here as they milk the

situation’s comedic content for all it’s worth. The similarity of Bryan Pilkington’s many parts meant I hardly knew who he was at any given time (except when he was Mrs Brisket), and soon forgot which one was the loquacious character: ‘That’ll put ginger in your gravy’(!).

But this mayhem that arose as the play built to a crescendo of

madness became its crowning glory. Who cares about narrative when you are being entertained so well? And who cares about the wolves? I’m not even sure if they were merely forgotten in the chaos?

We all loved the train ride - I could see the audience bobbing up and down with its ‘movement'.

And we all wanted to go ice skating with Bonnie and Sylvia because they made it look so much fun as they glided around.

Adam Elliot does steal the show here but let that not take anything away from Rebecca, Andrew, Bryan and Julia who all throw everything they’ve got into this fantastic production.

Reboot outdoors for 2018 Shenda Falvey swapped a high-flying PR career to whip people into shape in Greenwich. The personal trainer has built up a loyal following of fitness fans, who train with her in Greenwich Park. Shenda talks to the Weekender about bootcamps, Pilates, and catering to Mums.

“Before I had kids I worked in PR but I’ve always been massively into exercise, and my husband was an Irish kickboxing champion,” Shenda said. After having two children, Shenda went back to college for 2.5 years to become an advanced personal trainer. This year she’s studying to teach Pilates, which she already teaches but wants to formalise her qualifications in. “My clients grow with me,” she said. “I love anatomy, I love reading. I do a lot of boxing, but as people get older they want different things, like Pilates.”

Her bootcamp sessions are all based around interval training. “It’s not just running and push-ups. You can burn as much as 500 calories in a session,” she said.

Shenda runs bootcamp sessions four times a week, and clients can bring their children. “A lot of my pregnant and post-natal clients will train for as long as they can during pregnancy and then return after they’ve had their baby,” she said. “I

have two different target audiences: Monday and Wednesday nights are usually city workers, then the Friday and Saturday mornings are mainly Mums.”

Shenda also has her own studio at home for private Pilates sessions for one or two people at a time.

The personal trainer is a strong advocate of outdoor exercise.

“It’s amazing; it makes you feel energised being outside,” she said.

“The view is beautiful looking over at canary wharf.”

In winter the group size is between ten to 20 people, while in summer it peaks at 20.

“I’ve been running the bootcamps for nearly seven years. I have lot of clients that have been coming for a long time,” she said. “There’s so much competition, and so many gyms out there, but we have a great group energy and all the sessions are different.”

“It’s interval style training with some team work, some competitive stuff, always mat core work, burpees, kettlebells, shadow boxing, and circuits,” the trainer continued. “I try to get all the pillars of fitness in: muscular strength, endurance, agility, flexibility, and I keep it mixed up. There’s about 160 different workouts. It’s not challenging your clients if they’re doing the same exercises every time.”

Shenda Falvey So whether you’re a new Mum or a marathon runner, there’s something for all abilities. “I offer levels. I’m not allowed to run anymore –I have damage to my feet. You have to offer cardio in many different levels, not just running,” Shenda said. “We do a complete range of cardio and include everyone so even if you can’t do a certain exercise like jumping plyometrics there’s still a variation you can do and you can still have a really good workout.”

A lot of clients come to Shenda with the goal of losing weight.

“Nutrition is important. I’m not saying you must eat one particular

food, but I explain how food is used in the body. 70 percent of us is made in the kitchen.”

For Pre and post-natal women, Shenda works on shoulder, back, and pelvic care to make the birth easer, and post recovery quicker.

Coming into the New Year, people looking to take on new challenges can train privately with Shenda. “I offer sports conditioning: training people for specific events,” she said. “I think about the muscles they’re going to use for the sport they do. For people running marathons I do a lot of core work. They’ll be slow and injure themselves if their core isn’t strong

enough. And we’ll do a lot of side lunges, and curtsey lunges to work other parts of the legs.”

Bootcamps run on Friday and Saturday mornings from 9:30am10:30am (baby, buggy, and bigger kid friendly), and on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:30pm-8:30pm, in Southern Park (in front of the Ecology Park, West Parkside, SE10 0BW). Dare yourself to do the Moonwalk Every year, troops of power walkers storm Clapham Common in decorated bras, covering a marathon (or half marathon) loop around London to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

Founder of the MoonWalk London, and its associated breast cancer charity Walk the Walk, Nina Barough has always been an avid walker but the MoonWalk started as a dream, writes Laura Burgoine...

“I dreamt that I walked the New York marathon in a bra to raise money for breast cancer. I thought a weekend in New York would be fab but I didn’t know anyone with breast cancer,” Nina said.

“When I did find my cancer, it was three years I’d had it, and was an aggressive tumour. I had a lot to be grateful for and the decision to do it was very flippant.”

“I feel like I’ve had two lives: before cancer and after.”

Nina had never done a marathon, and never wanted to, but the concept took off fast. “We ended up with 13 of us doing the New York marathon. It was controversial, that 20 years ago,

we wore bras,” she said. “You couldn’t go out and buy colourful bras at the time. We’d dye white bras turquoise or pink and you had to have a celebrity designed bra. We had some amazing bras: Terry Wogan designed one, Chris Evans did a few, we had authors, Prime Minister’s wives. It grew organically.”

To train for a marathon Nina knew she’d have to up the ante.

“At the time it was called speed

walking and was really big in Europe, and Ireland but walking was seen as a poor relation.

Nobody recognised it as a sport in its own right,” Nina said.

Nina began calling her technique power walking –a term she coined.

“It was at that time Spice Girls were at the forefront with girl power,” she said. “There is a whole technique. Most people can walk three miles an hour, a lot of people can get to 3.8 or 4 miles an hour,

but if you want to get faster then technique is everything.”

Power talking uses the entire body. “It’s been described by scientists as the perfect exercise,” Nina said. “It’s a low impact, noninjury forming sport, that increases your heart rate, and you don’t have that pain threshold like with running,” she continued. You can also progress quickly.

In terms of training, you can’t start too soon. “The more you do, on the night it means you’re enjoying what’s going on, rather than thinking every step of this is purgatory,” Nina said. “We’ve funded research that has proven changes to diet, nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle habits have an impact in prevention against disease. The ball is in our court.”

To date, Nina has power walked about 70 or 80 marathons. “I used to do all of them every year. I’m very active. I’m always walking and my level of fitness never drops too low. I love that I can, at any time, take on a marathon,” she said.

Nina has always been health focused, and before cancer she was a reiki master and masseuse.

“It’s very different when you’re

confronted with your own life existence,” she said.

“Even though I got breast cancer, being into health foods and organic foods helped me recover very quickly, and while I was going through treatment it gave me a focus: what I ate was something I could take control of,” she said. “In terms of food –if it’s not organic, it’s not going in. I’ve been a vegetarian for many years, I’m a big vitamin taker. It’s about making calculated choices for you.”

With the new year rolling in, Nina says “dare yourself to sign up for this year’s MoonWalk.”

“Most of the people who come each year are people who have never taken on a challenge before,” Nina said. “We get all ages. Our eldest walker is well into her 80s; the youngest is 13. We’re going to help everyone every step of the way with a training plan, and how to buy shoes. Sometimes you sign up for something and you’re on your own. Not with Walk the walk, we want to help you get to the start line in great shape.”

Hitting the health circuit Orpington-based personal trainer Kevin Smith gives the Weekender the lowdown on his workouts. Kevin runs a class every Thursday night from 7pm-8pm at the Harris Academy (the Priory School) and a Sunday bootcamp at the Green Street Green in Bromley.

How often would you recommend exercise?

I would recommend doing one hour of exercise three times per week. However this could be more (or less) depending on individual fitness, goals and time available to train. I would recommend a rest day following a hard training session and using a foam roller after every training session to reduce DOMS (delayed onset of muscle soreness).

It’s good for core stability and muscle strength but has 15 -25 percent cardio. Sunday’s class is predominantly cardio (good fat burning session) due to the fact that it takes place on a larger open space. It also includes body weight exercises, agility work, and battle ropes. All abilities are catered for as reps, time spent doing each exercise etc will be dependent on individual fitness.

Everyone works at their own intensity and ability.

Price: Thursday is £6 per class.

Sunday is £5 per class. You can also do both classes for £35 per month. techniques where needed. He was able to adapt each exercise to our individual abilities.

I’ve been back several times, and I would highly recommend to all.
