ROCKNEY ROOTS Chas and Dave are taking a trip down memory lane as part of: The Full Story Live at Blackheath Halls. COMING OUT IN STYLE

Glaswegian designer, illustrator and creative Charles Jeffrey is NOW Gallery’s third fashion commission, with his exhibition on show until February 11. Charles’ first solo exhibition, THE COME UP is an interactive and three-dimensional representation of the Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY brand and cult club night.

Charles’ vibrant illustrations will be interpreted afresh through large sculptural pieces that will hang from the gallery’s seven-meter ceiling. The sculptures will be a mix of PVC, fibreglass, chicken wire with papiermache, and electrical tape, varying greatly in size. L

ocal actor Charlie Stemp has just hotfooted it back to his southeast London home from across the pond.

The stage star - who lives on Shooters Hill Road – went to the US to watch Hello Dolly on Broadway ahead of joining the cast in the role of Tucker in January.

But Charlie has a busy schedule to fulfill prior to making his debut on The Great White Way and will first lead an all-star cast at the London Palladium for their big budget pantomime, Dick Whittington.

And he’s happy to be home, “I love it here. I take frequent trips to Greenwich Park and get the clipper in from Greenwich. It’s one of my favourite places really.” Charlie told me during a break in rehearsals for the Christmas spectacular, which opens on 9 December.

A life on the stage wasn’t always on the cards for Charlie Stemp however, but a change in secondary school forced the youngster to embrace the performing arts, even though the Belcanto London Academy Theatre School in Eltham didn’t immediately engage the teenager.

“I hated it at first; I hated everything about it; we had to wear jockstraps and dance stuff and I wasn’t a dancer. Then one day something just clicked and I started to enjoy it and now it’s my passion.”

Charlie went on to undertake professional training in Epson and landed his first West End role, just after graduation, in the smash hit musical Wicked.

Charlie played Monkey Three in the acclaimed show and told me, “I had the best year and some of my closest friends are from the show; I loved every second of it.”

An international tour with the ABBA musical MAMMA MIA! followed, “I traveled the world doing an amazing show with lots of friends.”

But it was when Charlie returned to London that his career really changed course. Producer and theatrical impresario Cameron Macintosh had commissioned a revamp of the classic Tommy Steele star vehicle Half A Sixpence and had gathered a reputable team together, including the revered musical theatre partnership of Stiles and Drewe and writer Julian Fellowes.

All the production needed was a spirited young star to lead the cast and after an extensive audition process, Charlie was chosen to play the pivotal role of Arthur Kipps.

The revival earned critical acclaim both at the Chichester Festival Theatre and in London’s West End. Charlie explained, “We really felt like we’d given the show a new twist. We had to look at it like it was a brand new show and it really was. We completely changed a lot of the storyline and gave it a revamp. It was magical; one of the best years of my life.”

Tommy Steele has previously fulfilled, as he will take on the role of the eponymous hero in Dick Whittington at The London Palladium.

Once dubbed as the “home” of the British panto, The London Palladium hosted its first pantomime 100 years ago and it happened to be Dick Whittington.

Many celebrated festive favourites followed over subsequent years including another run of Dick Whittington, which starred a young Tommy Steele in 1969.

Charlie enthused, “I’m following in the great Tommy Steele’s footsteps again.”

The Palladium took a 30-year break from hosting its annual pantomimes, but the festive family favourite returned with a bang last

foray into the world; “My first was as Craig Revel Horwood’s chariot boy in Snow White back in, I think, 2011/2012.”

But Broadway beckons and almost as soon as Charlie hangs up his bindle, he’ll be packing it again for his residency in America to star in Hello Dolly opposite musical theatre legend Bernadette Peters, whom he met for the first time last week.

“She was this lovely little woman, who had a big old smile on her face and was saying ‘You’re the boy, you’re the boy’. We had a lovely chat.” Charlie tells me.

It seems a future life on the stage is inevitable for the young star and I ask if he has any advice for youngsters who are hoping to follow in his footsteps.

“Do what you enjoy. Everyone has this false pretense of theatre where it’s a certain way, but the truth is, we do this because we love it and that’s the only reason. No one gets into this industry for the money because nine times out of ten there is very little money. The only reason we do it is because we love it.” Charlie said, “The best advice I can give is to follow your happiness and that’s what I’ve tried to do as much as possible. The talent comes from hundreds of hours of repetition. That’s the only way you get better.”

“They’ve pulled out every stop and it’s unbelievable, but I can’t give away too much because I’ll get into trouble.”

A self confessed “connoisseur of panto” Charlie has always loved the art form, watching an average of five per season including annual effort at The Orchard Theatre in Dartford.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, his experience of performing in pantomime is somewhat limited however. In fact, this will be only his second

Snow business like show business

T

hey’re the clown stars of Snow-Pocalypse, the last two people on earth who have no understanding of what Christmas is.

Trilby and The-Boot have never had a winter, or a snow ball fight, or even a pig in a blanket, but find a book that inspires them to remake Christmas out of all the clutter in the junkyard where they live.

The show by SharkLegs Theatre was written and produced by SharkLegs’ codirectors Kezia Cole and Richard Hay. “We were working on a project in deepest darkest countryside, staying in a small rickety cabin in the middle of nowhere,” said Kezia.

“On the second day the snow started, not huge wintry drifts but just a light dusting. But to make it dramatic all the lights cut out. Sitting in a strange living room with nothing but tealights, a gramophone and a stuffed pheasant, we felt like the last two people in the whole world.

“To cope with the terrible lack of electricity – okay, a terrible lack of Wifi – we started talking

about a show. What would we do to make this situation fun? Make it exciting? Make it joyful? That’s how the weird and wonderful world of Snow-Pocalypse was created!

T

ry your hand (and feet) at Morris dancing with taster sessions at Mycenae House.

The Greenwich Morris Men have had a busy year: dancing before the Princess of Wales, the Duke of York and the Duchess of Cambridge.

Every Thursday evening and on many weekends (until it gets too dark for them to catch the sticks), the group dances somewhere local: by the Cutty Sark, the park gates and the Old Naval College. They dance at festivals like Rochester Sweeps, and sometimes venture further afield; recently they joined a side in Guernsey.

The earliest known reference to Morris dancing was in 1448, when the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths paid seven shillings, a tidy sum back then, for a ‘morysk daunce’. Now, more than 500 years later, you may well have seen the men in white, with brown waistcoats, baldricks and bells, performing a ‘morysk daunce’ with sticks or handkerchiefs, somewhere or other about the Royal Borough.

Most of the members join because they see the side dancing somewhere, like the look of it, come and have a go, and end up staying.

“We’re a friendly bunch, always welcoming new people, who pick up the dances pretty quickly,” Morris man Julian May said.

In fact, Greenwich Morris are in such demand for community events, like Surrey Docks City Farm Spring Celebration, the summer fair at Shrewsbury Park and the wassail in in East Greenwich Pleasaunce, that they reluctantly have to turn some invitations down.

For Greenwich Morris, the year begins at dawn on May 1, alongside the donkey ride outside the south entrance to the park. As the sun rises over Blackheath they dance to welcome the summer, starting with the Brockley Bash: a stick dance recently devised, followed by others more ancient, including hanky dances with names such as ‘Valentines’ and ‘Banks of the Dee’.

This summer Greenwich Morris celebrated their 40th birthday, with several other sides joining in for a day of dance. “It was a colourful and cheerfully noisy spectacle as about 100 people from different Morris traditions danced beside the river,”

“This summer I met people from India, Israel, Germany, Malta, Cyprus and Spain, all of whom told me there are similar dances where they come from.

One man, from Eritrea, thought we had actually learned dances from his country,” he continued.

So Morris dancing, seen as quintessentially English, is a member of a global family of street and village dances. “That’s great, because it means anyone with some sense of rhythm, and a bit of stamina can enjoy doing it,” Julian said.

The Greenwich group come from all walks of life. Julian is a producer

for BBC, there’s an electrician, an educational psychologist, a townplanner and an actor who was in Stars Wars and Dr Strange, acting with Benedict Cumberbatch. “There’s no starting and no retirement age: our foreman (who teaches the dances and keeps an eye on standards) began when he was 11; another regular is in his eightieth year. Morris dancing keeps you healthy and happy - if not wealthy and wise.”

Now the nights are drawing in, Greenwich Morris Men have retreated from the streets to their winter home, Mycenae House, in Westcombe Park.

CAROLS AT ELTHAM CREMATORIUM Everyone is welcome to join the service and commemorate those who have passed away at Eltham Crematorium. The service is held in the North Chapel at 2pm and lasts for about 45 minutes.

Beforehand, at 1.30pm, there'll be a short organ recital. The service is conducted by local ministers and officiants and they cater for all faiths and beliefs. Family Nutcracker Magical Christmas tale The Nutcracker is being put on at Mycenae House, as a shortened, family-friendly version.

Other tips apply over the festive period include: Correctly discard of your cigarettes: Every week somebody dies from a fire caused by a cigarette. That last glass of mulled wine may seem like a good idea at the time, but this increases the likelihood of falling asleep with a cigarette whilst under the influence. Ensure the safety of the whole family by stubbing out your cigarette!

As we all know, Christmas time is busy buying presents for the family, putting up decorations and, of course, cooking Christmas dinner. With such festivities taking place during this period, it is common for fire safety to take a back seat.

To help you prepare for the festive season, Station Manager Richard Melrose from East Greenwich Fire station would like to offer a few tips for keeping you family and your home safe this year from fire.

Christmas lights: Everybody wants to let their neighbours know that they are the most festive on the street, and what better way to do so than with Christmas lights!

Christmas Dinner: Throughout the year, cooking fires contribute considerably to fire statistics. Approximately 60% of accidental fires in the home begin in the kitchen.

On Christmas day, cooking is infinitely more stressful as the extended family arrive expecting only the finest of food prepared in their honour.

To meet such expectations, it is essential you don’t leave cooking unattended and make sure loose clothing and tea towels are kept clear of the oven and hobs. Kitchen safety in general must be taken very seriously, in order to avoid a much worse eventuality than a burnt Christmas dinner.

• Placing candles away from furnishings/flammable materials, especially the Christmastree, and ensuring they are extinguished before leaving the room • Practicing an escape plan with the family • Avoiding highly combustible decorations, especially over the fire, around heated appliances and near candles.

• Unplugging your Christmas tree and decorations before leaving the house or going to sleep • Keep an eye on your alcohol consumption!

• Checking your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detection early in December, and making sure it is fully functional for the busy period ahead • Ensuring your chimney is swept and properly maintained.

The short amount of time taken to look at these fire safety issues in the home now and make yours a Christmas to remember for all the right reasons.
