Argentine grazing Greenwich’s Buenos Aires café has launched a new bar menu. A more casual alternative to a full meal, the menu offers an array of snacks and tapas. Buenos Aires café opened two years ago, and has become a popular venue for steak, wine, pasta, and pizza, but also a hub for live music (on Thursday nights). Live jazz on Tuesdays is also coming soon.

BAND'S STAND

New band the Fred Hampton Appreciation Society is performing at the Old Royal Naval College’s Old Brewery. The seven-piece, who incorporate soul, dance and funk, is named after the Chicago Black Panther chairman who was murdered aged just 21 in 1969. JUST DANCE Greenwich Dance’s Swing and Jam Christmas Ball comes to the Borough Hall this festive season.

TRICKS AND TREATS AirCraft Circus is opening its doors and inviting locals to join them for a celebration of all things circus. A weekend of fun for young and old alike; AirCraft has circus shows, circus cabarets, free circus workshops (have a go on the flying trapeze), a clown show, fire performances, face-painting and a giant inflatable slide.

Show highlights this year include Circus All-Sorts Cabaret, the Tim Burton Inspired The Nightmare Before Christmas in collaboration with Bristol's Temple Cloud Circus, and The Last Supper - a feast of circus delights

from the AirCraft Circus professional company.

This will be the final show at the Hangar Arts Trust before it shuts down after ten years supporting the circus community.

Crowning achievement

F

ans of biographical TV drama the Crown can watch out for Woolwich actor Ivanhoe Norona who joins season two of the series, returning to Netflix on December 8.

The series, starring Claire Foy and Matt Smith, follows the life of Queen Elizabeth II, and returns to screens with episodes shot on location in Capetown.

Inavhoe talks to the Weekender about a meteoric rise to the throne.

“I play an island king in the south Pacific,” Ivanhoe said.

“I have a day job delivering at Tesco and my agent gave me a ring and said Nina Gold –the casting director for Star Wars and Game of Thrones- wanted to meet with me.”

After initially asking if the casting director could reschedule so he could attend a Tesco forum meeting, where Ivanhoe is a union rep, the actor went along to the West End to meet Nina’s assistant. “My agent sent me a text in all capitals, with five exclamation marks, saying I think you’d better get down to meet Nina,” Ivanhoe said. “I had done a show in a pub in north London two years ago and Nina Gold turned up, sat at the back, didn’t say a word. But she suggested me when the Crown’s director and executive producer Phillip Martin said he was looking for

“I said to my boss, ‘have you heard of a TV show called the Crown?’ He said ‘my wife loves that, why?’ and I said ‘I think I’m in it.’ someone who had south Pacific looks, but also looked regal.”

Ivanhoe was born in Camden, grew up around Ladbroke Grove, and was educated at the Chelsea School of Arts. In our phone interview, I asked how he managed a south Pacific, regal look. “I’ve got an unusual background,” he said. “My mother is from Naples, my father is half Indian, half Portuguese, and when I was younger I had a conventional straight nose but I boxed for ten years so I have a really broken nose; so it’s a very unusual casting category I fit into.”

This time last year, after meeting with Nina Gold’s assistant on a Tuesday, Ivanhoe had photos taken on the Wednesday (“I’ve got a few tattoos they wanted to look at”), the casting directors looked at the photos on Thursday, and had the actor at the South African consulate on Friday and on a plane to Capetown on Saturday.

“It was my twin boys’ birthday, the run-up to Christmas, and I had to sign a contract saying I

couldn’t say anything to anyone until it aired,” the actor said. “I said to the producers, in the real world, where people have jobs, I can’t say I’m going on a plane, and I can’t tell you where I’m going or what I’m doing!”

Ivanhoe decided to be honest with his bosses at Tesco, who he says have always been supportive of his acting. “I said to my boss, ‘have you heard of a TV show called the Crown?’ He said ‘my wife loves that, why?’ and I said ‘I think I’m in it.’ He replied with ‘how much time do you need off?’ I was over the moon.”

He knew he’d be away shooting for at least a month, but still doesn’t know which episodes he’s in.

The Crown is a high quality production by every definition, Ivanhoe said. “Matt Smith is an absolutely darling. As an actor, he really wanted other actors to do really well.”

“The production team wanted to create a family, everybody was treated the same, nobody was treated like a superstar; you can tell by the production the kind of

harmony caused amongst us all,” he continued. “It’s so nice when you can go up to the producer and ask ‘how’s it going, are you happy?’ and they sit you down and they talk to you, and they have so much time for you.”

The Crown’s creators prioritise the creative process. “They really give you the opportunity to explore the characters and experiment. Usually on filming you want to get there, do the filming, and go home. But on this show, they’ve got the time. That’s the quality they were looking for; this was going to be their masterpiece.”

Peckham-based actress Olivia Colman also joins the cast this season. “There’s lots of lovely stories of people from south London who were there,” Ivanhoe said. “The juiciest story I have to give is one evening I went out with Matt Smith -the directors wanted us to socialize so our characters would bond – and because we were in South

Africa one has an assumption that no one would know who he was. But he’s Doctor Who. One person came over and Matt spent two hours signing autographs, taking selfies. At one point he had a dog and a baby in each arm. He really is an incredibly giving guy.” Matt Smith certainly hasn’t become jaded by fame, Ivanhoe said. “He says that’s part of the gift we have; we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without fans, without people watching our work. For a man of 36 he’s incredibly mature.”

Ivanhoe plans to do some drama teaching at Shooter’s Hill Sixth Form College next. “For me it’s about telling people to just stick at it. Because success can be that quick.”

“You can do it if you work really hard, and it’s about luck.”

Time to sparkle in Thamesmead

Thamesmead Clocktower will be getting a glittering festive makeover as Santa, his reindeer and elves pay a visit.

Thamesmead Christmas Sparkle, the first Christmas event to be held in the area, will include craft activities, children’s fairground rides, ice carving and festive gifts on sale from local traders.

There will also be live music, with performances from Jerusha Frimpong, Bishop John Robinson School Choir, We Are Trackless and more.

The event, held by Greenwich Council and Peabody, will be held at the clocktower, Joyce Dawson Way, SE28, on Friday, December 8, from 3pm to 7pm.

Greenwich launch Youngsters can enjoy a ‘unique theatrical experience’ as Santa lands his sleigh at his Christmas Launch Pad at the Greenwich Winter Time Festival in the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College.

The 15 minute show is not a one-on-one meeting, but will be watched a group of up to 40 children. All visitors receive a small gift and the chance to take part in a group photo.

Tickets cost £5, but you also have to buy an entry ticket to the festival, which are £15 for adults and £8 for kids. The show is suitable for children aged up to 10. Children aged 3 and under only require a ‘Visit Father Christmas’ ticket. Adults do not need a ticket to attend with their children. www.greenwichwintertime.com

Dame for a laugh is a must-see

T

he anticipation and buzz of excitement in SE London begins once the word is out that Andrew Pollard is writing the Greenwich panto (his twelfth), and that Anthony Spargo is the baddie again.

Andrew is the absolute guv’nor at this, the Panto

Meister, the Dame for a Laugh who knows exactly what the audience wants so he gives it to them right where it tickles the most.

This year’s Cinderella is loosely based around an Edmond Halley story, with Baron Halley living in the Greenwich Observatory, inventing things while his daughter

Ella gets mistreated by her two stepsisters. Prince Charming of Chigwell likes to throw grandiose balls but has always been unlucky in love. Up until now.

Pollard bowls the innuendoes about the Prince’s ‘amazing balls’ across the stage at every opportunity, while Spargo’s Ugly Sister Kylie looks forward to

being ‘taken up the observatory’, bookmarking every saucy quip with a squeeze of ‘her’ squeaky bra.

There are fart jokes for the little kids and double entendres for the big kids and this blend creates two hours of hilarious family fun. Even the music works on two levels; I am in the advanced stages of fogeydom so enjoyed the Queen,

Shalamar and Jacksons numbers, but I could only look on in awe at the youngsters singing along to songs I had never heard of.

There is the obligatory ‘Oh no he ain’t’ stuff, as well as trying to sing louder than the other half of the theatre, but we would be demanding our money back if we didn’t get it. We want to shout ‘Look behind you!’ and we need our goodies and baddies, and ice cream at the intervals, and we got all of that. Plus a troupe where each member had a good voice and versatility. The musical numbers were performed with gusto and you could tell that there was a lot of musicianship in the orchestra pit - they turned out soul, funk and heavy rock at the drop of a high hat.

Paul Critoph plays Baron Halley and wears the wig well; our courting couple could not have been more sweeter, while Jean-Luke Worrell as Dandini had a voice that sounded like it should be coming from someone else. He was a surprise that wowed! James Keningale nearly got my Man of the Match award for a great turn as Buttons, but the Ugly Sisters, Kylie and Mylie were the ones we all wanted to shout at and boo. Spargo not only has the crowd in the palm of his hand, but the band, the sound effects man and his fellow players, often throwing them off with ad libs that had them corpsing a few times, much to our merriment.

The Greenwich Panto is once again a Christmas must-see.

Slapstick, silliness and song & dance!

Pantomime season is fast approaching (oh yes it is!) and the experts in Eltham are staging a real classic, with the traditional rags to riches story of Cinderella, writes Nicky Sweetland...

Over the moon - Greenwich one of favourites to win Culture bid

Bookmaker Ladbrokes has put the odds on Greenwich winning the title of London’s first ever Borough of Culture at seven to one as the council submitted its bid to Mayor Sadiq Khan’s office this week, writes Katherine Johnston...

On Friday, December 1, Greenwich Council brought together the campaign’s supporters at a celebratory event held in the historic Royal Arsenal buildings in Woolwich.

The old firepower museum is currently home to a seven metre art installation created using NASA imagery of the moon’s surface.

Over breakfast, Councillor Denise Scott-McDonald, Cabinet Member for Culture, Creative Industries and Community WellBeing, took the opportunity to announce the launch of a new Greenwich Cultural Forum, linking up artists and community groups to capitalise on the interest generated by the bid.

She said the new forum: “is about creating spaces where our community can come together and celebrate, giving all cultures a voice and opportunity.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced the new London Borough of Culture initiative in June 2017 and invited all 32 boroughs to compete for a £1m funding boost for the arts.

Greenwich and Docklands Festival, also took to the stage and echoed the desire to build a cultural legacy whether the bid is successful or not.

He said: “All of us in this room love Greenwich and all of us involved want Greenwich to be better.

“Something new has been kindled in Greenwich. We all need to ensure that the conversations continue.”

It is high on the council’s agenda that benefits are felt across the borough and not just the heritage site. Councillor Scott-McDonald and Mr Hemmings were joined on stage by Adriana Marques, head of Thamesmead cultural strategy for Peabody Housing Association, which is building 20,000 new homes in Thamesmead. Ms Marques said that the organisation would continue to work with cultural groups as “houses alone do not make communities, culture does.”

She said the bid was a “chance for less well remembered parts of London to get their moment in the limelight.”

Rapper Kid Bookie, from Woolwich, is a vocal supporter of the campaign on social media, tweeting with the #GreenwichMeans hashtag.

The 25-year-old also known as Tyronne Buddy-Lee Ike Hill told the Weekender: “I believe in the borough, all you need to

do is to look around and see the enthusiasm and commitment here today.”

Eve Horne, a singer, songwriter and producer from Woolwich said becoming Borough of Culture could help rebuild a community spirit she feels has been lost.

She said: “Where have all the street parties of the past gone? Let’s start talking again. We have to be open to conversations with each other.”

Greenwich’s bid has also received support from Olympians Gemma Gibbons and Zoe Smith, Squeeze singer Glenn Tilbrook and rapper Tinie Tempah.

This week Ladbroke’s put the odds on Greenwich taking the crown at seven-to-one, with stiff competition from Southwark and Waltham Forest at both sixto-one.

The winning boroughs will be announced in February 2018.

You can't Beat It! J

ackson Live in Concert is in its eighth year of touring and now sees long-time fan and hugely talented Ben recreate the Michael Jackson experience with his rendition of all his favourite songs. His portrayal of Jackson captures the King of Pop at the height of his powers as he sings live throughout the show and performs all the signature Michael Jackson dance routines.

One finger at a time, Ben carefully plucked the one glove from his hand, took off his white fedora and sent it spinning

to land perfectly on the hatstand hook, spun on his shiny, patent leather, loafer heels before sitting down to give the Weekender some of his time.

Ben is Bad. The Kent man has been performing as Michael Jackson for 12 years but has been a performer for much longer.

“I was entertaining from as far back as I remember,” he begins. “No opportunity to perform was ever wasted.” His early working life was spent managing a coffee shop but in his heart he knew this was not for him. Being on stage was something he knew he had to do so enrolled at the Performing

College in Canterbury but became disillusioned: “I left after a year,” he says. “I had no interest in training to just be an extra or to dance in the West End, I knew what I wanted so I went for it and thankfully it’s been an amazing journey.”

Friends reunited

Hannah Matthews was born, schooled and brought up in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Being the daughter of an art teacher mother was in her blood and it is what she herself does now. After James Wolfe Junior School and Thomas Tallis Secondary, Hannah took her A Levels at Woolwich College where she got an A in Politics, fell in love with the subject so went off to the University of Greenwich to do a degree in it.

She says “it wasn’t the political causes as much as the structures in the machines of power’”that she became enamored with, adding “it’s probably the rules and sense of order why I enjoy teaching English so much.”

But as well as teaching Hannah has recently published a book: Unpenned tells the tale of Isabel and the events that follow when she decides to reunite with some former pen pals, travelling from her hometown in SE London to the edges of the Pacific. The book is based around her own travels around the world.

Hannah has been writing from an early age. She recalls writing short stories as a child that progressed into keeping a diary, each day rated by her own grading system. “Venting hormones during my teen years I wrote starcrossed, and sometimes angry, romantic tales,” she reveals.

Adulthood found her writing travel blogs about her trips to the US and South and Central America, sometimes in a Ford Mustang.

After years of writing blogs and

diaries, however, writing prose was initially a challenge for Hannah, who writes under the pseudonym D.D. Nonny (From a mispronounced phrase she used as a baby). “I think my biggest hurdle was making characters speak,” she remembers. “Another issue was that I can’t just switch it on and off. I found I could never write for more than four hours a day.”

Although a true Greenwich girl, it was when Hannah was travelling in the Pacific that she came to the realisation that she could never happily work in London again.

She had secure employment as a Project Manager on construction and design jobs but suddenly paused her life to take a teaching course in Canada. Now, amazingly, Ms Matthews can be found teaching English to children in

southern Spain on a short contract, which allows her more time to see the world. She feels she is, though, still project managing: “Coaxing a small, hot room of twelve 7-year-olds to speak English is project management enough,” she jokes. Her reward these days, nonetheless, doesn’t come from seeing a project through to completion, she tells me, but seeing

her students pass their exams.

Teaching also offers more time for Hannah to write than the busy world of management and, wherever she may be, she will be starting on her second book in the New Year.

Reindeer and a panto You can meet live reindeer before watching a magical panto at the Forum at Greenwich, on Saturday, December 9.

The tragic death of Mary Mahony - killed on her first day at the firework factory W

here Tunnel Avenue runs today there was once a firework factory.

It was sprawled out on the area of marshland at the back of Woolwich Road, and it consisted of a lot of little huts.

Fireworks factories are normally like this because if there is an explosion the damage will be less than if it is in one big building. These were huts flimsily built deliberately and only one or two people worked in each one.

Thomas Robson had founded the works in 1845. He held patents for ‘firing signals and other lights’ and the factory turned out signaling devices for ships and railways many as well as ‘proper’ fireworks for displays and other small scale explosive devices.

Fireworks in the 19th century were not just for flashy displays at New Year or on Guy Fawkes night. In the days before telephones or radio they had a very real use as warning signals on ships, and as flares in the thick ‘pea souper’ fogs which were becoming all too common.

Robson’s Ammunition Works had a front office on Woolwich Road – roughly opposite the entrance to Annandale Road and about where the chip shop stands. Also in Woolwich Road was Wick Cottage where the manager lived. In the 1880s a path stretched back from these buildings to a large area of marsh land intersected by ditches and dykes – this is where Tunnel Avenue and the Blackwall Tunnel Approach now run. It appears that vegetables were also grown here since the only picture we have of the works clearly shows a patch of cabbages in front of the danger buildings.

By the 1880s Thomas Robson was no longer in charge here, although the works still carried his name. It was now called ‘Dyer and Robson’.

In 1882 James Dyer, age 30, the manager, lived with his, Indian born, wife and baby daughter in Wick Cottage. The works employed only eleven men, four women, and four boys. It was the women who died.

Railway fog signals were made here out of two small iron saucers fitted together with some gunpowder in the space between them. The edges of the two saucers were

‘crimped’ to hold them together and this was done by young women using screw fly presses. There were some safety features - when the equipment was activated an iron shield moved into place to protect the worker as the two parts of the signal were pressed together. Also, for safety, employees had to wear special shoes and fireproof clothes with no pockets in them while they were at work. Nevertheless there was an accidental explosion at least once a month and, sadly, it appears these were not reported to the authorities.

The 20th November 1882 was Mary Mahoney’s first day at work on the presses - although she had worked ‘on and off’ at Robson’s for the past six years. She was working in No.19 shed being supervised by Emily Gilder. The two young women sat in an area which was six feet by five, just three feet apart from each other. Beside them were about 800 explosive signals and also a tray of finished signals with some loose gunpowder which had been spilt and not cleaned up.

The machines at which Mary and Emily worked were new and still on trial from the makers. However ‘new girl’ Mary did not really understand the process and unknown to Emily

He struggled upright and found Emily on the ground outside the shed – she had either been blown out or jumped.

He fought through the smoke to where Mary was lying on the floor of the hut among loose powder which was exploding all around her while molten lead from the finished signals was falling on her. He managed to get her out and once outside he tried to pull of her burning serge dress and she just said ‘Oh, Mr.Law’ as he

collapsed himself – by then he too was badly burnt.

Mary was taken across the road to the Workhouse Infirmary. She was very badly burnt on her back, arms, legs and face. She said ‘Oh, Doctor, I was pressing of those fog signals when it went off … I think I must have pressed it on the side’.

It seems that at first it was hoped she would live, although, later, the Doctor said he had no hope from the first. At first she did well but then infections set in and she died four days later ‘of exhaustion’.

She was twenty-four years old, and lived with her parents in Marsh Lane – today’s Blackwall Lane. She was the eldest of four children, all born in Greenwich, to parents, Michael and Mary, who had come from Kerry to work as labourers. The area at the top of Marsh Lane between what was originally the Ship and Billet Pub and Wick Cottage has been described as a small hamlet in the 19th century. Many Irish immigrants lived in this area which has been described as a ‘fairly large colony’ from the 1850s. They were people who had come to find work in the factories springing up along Blackwall Lane. Those that failed in this could find labouring work in the market gardens which still operated

in the area.

Mary died in the Workhouse Infirmary which stood on the site of what is now the Greenwich Centre with its library and leisure centre. Most people will remember that this has replaced Greenwich District Hospital, which itself replaced St. Alfege’s Hospital – which had begun as the Greenwich Workhouse. The Workhouse itself had been built in 1840 on the site of a field called Catsbrains. However a new infirmary building was added in the 1870s, and that, we can, assume is where Mary was taken.

Sadly she lived, worked, was injured and died all within an area of a 100 yards or so.

The accident was investigated by the Chief Inspector of Explosives, Colonel Vivien Majendie – after whom Majendie Road in Plumstead is named. Although he worked nationally on investigations into explosions he lived locally, well within earshot of Robson’s Works, in Victoria Way. This was not the only fatal explosion at Robson’s and Majendie’s recommendations and the many other accidents he investigated locally are more detailed subjects.

Today the area of Robson’s works is covered with housing and roads.

As we all enjoy firework displays we should also remember that they are only made safely because of the work of Vivien Majendie and the Explosives Inspectorate but that people had to die before he could act. Mary Mahoney was one of them.

irst off I want to mention how wonderful the serving staff were when we visited the Old Brewery.

And they were not just putting on a show for us, they were attentive, informative and highly professional with all the customers. My mum was so pleased with the service she threatened to kidnap a couple of them; the chef to cook duck for her every day and another one because ‘he looks like a nice boy.’

Situated off road in a huge, high-ceilinged old brewery this restaurant and bar was abuzz with customers, each one looking like they were having a good time, whether they were dining or drinking. We were impressed with the menu that offered enough choice to make you think about it but not so much that you gave up on making a decision and just pointed at something with your eyes closed. Our first server talked up the duck so Mum leapt on that, while I looked for something I’ve not had before, or for a long time. But first we needed a thirst quencher.

Camden Pale Ale is a beer I know and enjoy for its flavour. Mum had a Peroni for the same reasons.

I started with something very different: Whipped goat's cheese & roasted figs. This was a nicely presented dish with all the components complementing each other. Mum had Cornish panseared scallops, cauliflower puree and London chorizo that she knows is always good. Again, it looked like art on a plate.

The Manager, Mark, introduced himself and sat down. An amiable chap with an easy smile and laugh, he filled us in on recent developments and how the clientele ranges between tourist, uni students and locals, and complimented us on our choice of main course. He also suggested a rather wonderful New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc: ‘It will go well with both your choices,’ he said before going back to managing.

The noise levels are quite high in the Old Brewery but the sound drifts up and away into the roof, creating a sense of atmosphere whilst still allowing normal

My mum was so pleased with the service she threatened to kidnap a couple of them; the chef to cook duck for her every day and another one because ‘he looks like a nice boy.’ conversation. Even so, when Mum started talking about having sex every day with my father I made out I couldn’t hear her. Luckily the main courses arrived along with an opportunity to change the subject: ‘That duck looks nice.’

And it must have been nice because she refused to let me have a taste. ‘Just write that it was delicious,’ she said between forkfuls of pink game bird. It was about now Mum decided she wanted a chef at home to cook duck for her on a regular basis.

I had the Cod Supreme and it was fine, not as light and flaky as I like but still good. What I

was taken with was the Pink Fir potatoes - crushed, formed into a patty and grilled, and absolutely fantastic. So simple, but an excellent example of the versatility of the humble spud.

Having looked through the dessert menu I knew I was too full for the Sticky Toffee Pudding but there is always room for an icecream based dessert, so I had the Ice Cream Sundae. It is more or less all the good things you can think of for afters put into a bowl: Vanilla, chocolate and peanut ice cream, caramelised walnuts, brownie bites, whipped cream, toffee and chocolate sauce! Know

what I mean?

Mum, showing both finesse and restraint, had a Lemon and Raspberry Possett. ‘It’s so lovely and sour,’ she said. “Just like it should be.’ She forced a spoonful of that sharp lemon onto me just after I’d had a sweet mouthful of caramelised walnuts and toffee sauce - The acidity almost made my eyes pop out! ‘Yeh, lovely, innit?’ I squealed through pursed lips.

Our meal in The Old Brewery was faultless. Everything about the place is good. And if Mark gets his way and they start brewing there again it will be even better.

The subject land is located along the western boundary of Royal Arsenal Gardens, Woolwich SE18. The site area is approximately 149 m2 (0.0149 ha’s - 1,603 sq.ft.).

The disposal is to take place by way of freehold transfer in exchange for the simultaneous freehold transfer of alternative land also situated along the western boundary of the Royal Arsenal Gardens with a larger site area of approximately 269 m2 (0.0269 ha’s – 2,895 sq.ft.).
