The King and I

I

t’s a dream come true for Elvis fans: the chance to experience the King in concert at the O2. As part of Elvis in Concert, Priscilla Presley is making a special live appearance, introducing the King of Rock n Roll’s archive recordings, backed by the legendary Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra on stage. The evening features the biggest selling solo artist’s critically acclaimed album If I Can Dream, which is Elvis’ twelfth UK number one album and his fiftieth to hit the UK topten.

Priscilla Presley, who produces the show along with Don Reedman and Elvis Presley Enterprises, spoke to the Weekender about the legacy, the music, and that voice.

“It is a full on experience,” she said. “The tour was so successful

His fans, new and old, are universally devoted. Priscilla said “it comes down to his voice.”

“Parents would turn on a radio and kids would start singing, and they’re now a fan,” she said. “Look at Love Me Tender: everyone who listens to it, it’s like he’s singing to you. He had that innate ability to make you feel like he was singing just to you.”

Elvis’ live performances were the same. “When you watch him, the authenticity of him and how he sings; it’s like it’s the first time. He always sang them as if it was the

“When Elvis sang, he sang from his soul,” Priscilla continued. “He didn’t just throw his songs, he would always give his best. Music was his life, music was his soul, since he was three-years-old, and he never ever let that go. He never wanted to let down his audience.”

Priscilla met Elvis in 1959, in Germany, where she was living with her mother and Air Force officer stepfather, and Elvis was

serving in the army. “When I met him I was three months under 14, and he was this big, big star,” she said. “I didn’t know what being a fan was, I had no idea what a fan club was. I wasn’t in that world.”

She moved in with him four years later and they were married in 1967.

“I thought he was gorgeous in Love Me Tender, but when I met him I got to see a whole other different side,” she continued. “I got to know him as the man he was, I saw him as this vulnerable person who had just lost his mother. He was overseas by himself for the first time. He was so caring, sensitive, such a soldier.

She described the years that followed as “very memorable times.” “I just didn’t know the impact; I never saw him perform live until Las Vegas,” she said. “I was captivated as if I was a fan. He came on that stage and I was like ‘oh my God, I get it.’ The charisma he exuded was just beyond.

Everyone was just electrified, and there were all these big names there, Cary Grant, Raquel Welch, Dean Martin–and Elvis gave his heart and soul. He stood on that stage and owned it.”

Priscilla went on to carve a career of her own as an actress, spending five years on the popular soap Dallas, and starring opposite Leslie Nielson in the Naked Gun films. “I loved it. I tend to take challenges thinking everyone’ll look back on my life and wonder why I did that. It wasn’t like work for me; the Naked Gun was probably the most fun. And I loved Dallas, loved the people,” she said. “I’ve been really fortunate.”

In 2012, Priscilla made her pantomime debut in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the New Wimbledon theatre. “That was one of the most frightening things I’ve done,” she said.

he Café Bar at Blackheath Halls will be exhibiting an exciting collection of work entitled Art in the Dark by Rebecca Walker over the next few weeks.

Originally from Mumbai, Rebecca moved to south east London in 2002 and despite studying for a Masters Degree in Politics, always felt her heart was in design and drawing.

Informally trained in by her father, who was an artist and professor at

Raheja school of Arts in Mumbai, Rebecca told me: “The aim of my work is to explore and present in each drawing my inner responses to the world in the form of a visual tableau. Each piece is a static slice of an untold story, containing both narrative and poetic elements.”

Using the traditional art technique of pen and ink, Rebecca Walker's work explores and presents her inner responses to the world in the form of a visual tableau.

Rebecca explained: “My

preferred medium for this is based on the traditional art technique of pen and ink—which is a genre that is well developed within both the Western and Indian art canons.

Sometimes, I may change the type of pen, the colour of ink, the type of paper, or even enlarge the drawing up to a big print. However, even though the tools, equipment and technical strategies I use are modern, the hand, eye and brain coordinate to work on the empty page in the same way as previous artists within this tradition.”

Black and white or minimal colour is used to develop imagery that embodies a certain purity and simplicity.

“I aim for immediacy and speed of execution, but with a strongly determined and defined line. I use the contrast of black and white or minimal colour, to develop imagery that hopefully embodies a certain purity and simplicity. I begin each drawing with a core idea or set of notions about its direction. But, it is my relationship to this core idea, and the inner

A screening of importance

G

reenwich Picturehouse is screening A Woman of No Importance, part of the Oscar Wilde Live season at the Vaudeville Theatre on 28 November.

What begins as a quintessentially English comedy gradually descends into a bleak comment on social status, but with some beautifully performed and passionate portrayals from a stellar cast, A Woman of No Importance proves a well-written piece of theatre, which remains germane.

The play parodies the British class system - of which the writer was famously a critic. First performed in 1893, A Woman of No Importance was written at the behest of Herbert Beerbohm Tree, the then actormanager of London's Haymarket Theatre.

But far from being old hat, the dialogue and themes within this play hold a lot of relevance in today’s social climate.

And the cast - under the direction of Dominic Dromgoole - does a great job of keeping the pace and injecting the humour whenever the action begins to feel too claustrophobic.

Anne Reid is hilarious as the dotty old Lady Hunstanton - particularly during some delightful musical interludes between scenes - while Eve Best shows her mettle with a strong performance as a scorned and bitter social outcast, who after having a child out of wedlock, has reinvented herself in order to better the prospects for both herself and her son Gerald (played with a wonderful energy and youthful optimism by Harry Lister Smith).

Lord Illingworth initially seems charming but it becomes apparent as the darker elements of the story ensue that he is really a caddish bully. Dominic Rowan skillfully switches between the two facades - at all times keeping an almost teasing humour to his delivery while making the characterisation wholly believable and really quite

chilling.

Jonathan Fensom's set is impressive with the decadence of Hunstanton Hall cleverly contrasted with the meager simplicity of the Arbuthnot's living room and the soundtrack of birds singing adds to the general ambience.

Despite often being seen as Wilde’s weakest work, A Woman of

No Importance is an intricate and interesting piece and with a real appetite for classic plays among audiences, is a welcome addition to the West End. A Woman of No Importance will be screened at Greenwich Picture House on 28 November at 7:15pm. www.picturehouses.com

The parade starts at 4pm at the Visitor Centre, Old Royal Naval College. Led by a jazz band from Trinity Laban and the Mayor, the parade will walk through the grounds, into Cutty Sark Gardens and into the Market at 5pm for the big Christmas Lights On. Characters from this year’s Greenwich Theatre pantomime, Cinderella, will switch on the lights. Afterwards local children will perform on stage in the Angelina Jandolo Dance Showcase.

Lights up

Horsing around London’s daftest race event, the London Pantomime Horse Race, gallops back into Greenwich on Sunday 10 December for its eighth consecutive year.

If the sight of racing Pantomime Horses is not surreal enough, then picture them dressed up as their favourite rock star or pop idol.

The rock/pop icons themed event begins with the popular Pre-Race Ceremony show at Devonport House from 11:30am-1pm. Hosted by comedian Nick Wilty and US comic Lewis Schaffer, the show includes a Madonna special of Strictly Neigh Dancing and features an appearance from Maredonna herself, who will perform Into the Hoof: a specially reworked version of the classic ‘80s Madonna song Into the Groove.

Things are set to get even more surreal when a ‘70s era Elton John -called Equestrian John- makes an appearance (complete with his magic mobile piano) to entertain the hundreds of spectators expected to attend the free event.

The London Rock Choir is also making a big appearance, performing a medley of classic rock and pop songs. Expect the odd celebrity or two making a surprise appearance on the day.

At 1pm, the streets of central Greenwich will be transformed into a course for glammed up comical looking pop/rock star lookalike nags. Featuring the likes of Neddie Mercury, Beyonce-Neigh, Elvis Preseneigh, plus an unexpected reunion of sorts from the bickering brothers, Noel and Liam Galloper. These iconic looking Panto Horses begin the race from the grounds of Devonport House, onwards to their first of six pit stops along the quarter mile route.

The 2017 route has some special -and frankly bizarre- surprises in store for those hapless horses. The five best performing horses, with the most awarded points per pit-stop, will then face their final race challenge: the SpaceHopper Panto Horse finale.

The final five nags will each be presented with two Space Hoppers for the front and back ends

of their horse. Each horse must sit, bounce and race to the finish line, whilst trying to jump over the many steeple jumps (and another little surprise obstacle thrown in for good measure).

The first nag to reach the finish line will be crowned the official 2017 winner. Prizes will also be awarded to second and third place runners up. All participating nags are then encouraged to get changed, relax and to let their hair down in style, with the final event of the day, the-AfterRace Xmas show.

Hosted by Simon ‘Showbiz’ Gross (Big Brother /X-factor), the live extravaganza will feature a seriously OTT act called The Dave Hill(s) Glam Rock experience who will be performing the greatest ever glam-rock hits, performed by five cloned versions of Slade Guitarist Dave Hill. Headlining will be leading ABBA tribute act ABBA Chique. A festive DJ will play all those festive hits to get everyone in the Christmas spirit plus special guest appearances will also make this an unforgettable day to remember.

All money raised on the day will go directly to the 2017 nominated charity YouCan – Youth Cancer Support.

n 2001 Andrew McLeish was invited to be executive chef at Chapter One where he excelled. In his first year there he was awarded a Michelin star, retaining the accolade for over ten years. In 2003 Chapter One was named the AA’s UK Restaurant of the Year, gaining four AA rosettes that same year. In recent months Andrew and his managing partner Marcel Faulstich have taken over the restaurant and asked Weekender down to talk about their plans.

Marcel welcomed Nina and I and led us into the bar where, beneath the warm decor, he offered us champagne. After bringing us up to speed on the business side of recent events Marcel told us of their plans for a separate, more

casual dining area where people could come for cheese, wine, burger and beer - ‘All from the same kitchen and the burgers made from the same meat we use for our fine dining,’ he stressed. We told Marcel how we frequent Chapter One for special occasions, because it is a very special place, so it will be nice to feel able to visit for less formal events.

Walking through the dining area there is a mix of cool, hardly audible music, hushed and polite conversation, and the silent air of professionals at work, monitoring and scanning the diners to preguess their needs. Strangely, these black-clad men all look like extras in a Goodfellas film, which made me smile.

Knowing Mr McLeish has a penchant for cooking game I had an idea which way I was going: Jugged Hare, followed by Roast Yorkshire Grouse. Nina went down the seafood route: Grilled Octopus and Roast Turbot. laid before us. The meat was so moist it was hard to believe it was a game bird, and the chef had shown once again why fennel should be used a lot more.

From our corner spot I could observe the staff go about their business. Gliding smoothly between tables as they serve or clear away disguises the fact that this is a well rehearsed routine.

Gabriele’s almost indiscernible gestures and flourishes were a joy to watch.

Our starters arrived. Nina’s came with Chorizo and diced potatoes looking a treat. The tentacle was cooked to perfection.

My Jugged Hare was served on a bed of spinach under a mound of potato foam, with pancetta. It

was a real delight. The meat was tender and juicy and I believe there are not that many people who can cook game as well. We drank a Portuguese wine from the Casa De Passarella estate, a very drinkable red, light and smooth, which accompanied Nina’s seafood as well as it did my game dish.

Next was the Roast Turbot, a beautiful fish that was intriguingly served with Coco Beans, amongst other things. My Grouse, cooked in its own juices and served with celeriac, liver and beetroot was as amazing as the game that came before. Marcel had visited the table to talk us through each dish and how it was prepared, which made the meal even more mouthwatering.

The dessert list was extremely tempting but I was ready to burst.

Nina, though, was making all sorts of excitable sounds over the cheese menu. ‘Look, look! Alex James’s Blue Monday, and lots made with unpasteurised milk,’ she squealed. I told her I would share some cheese with her, but when the board came I hardly got a look in, though I did identify the Admiral Collingwood as particularly nice.

Chapter One really is a wonderful restaurant, and with their fixed price à la carte menu it is not as daunting as some might think. It is an experience that I recommend everyone has. There is also a Brasserie menu for lunch, Monday to Saturday from 12pm-3pm.

Crooked District Events (CDE) returns for a 5th collaboration with Greenwich Dance to showcase the talent of the Krump and Waacking community on Saturday 25 November. CDE specializes in Krump, a form of street dance created in Los Angeles by Ceasare ‘Tight Eyez’ Willis and Jo’Artis ‘Big Mijo’ Ratti. For this event, Krump will be joined by Waacking - a form of dance created in the LGBT clubs of Los Angeles during the 1970s disco era.

ow cloud, grey skies and chilly days characterise November’s weather - with occasional bright and clear conditions.

This is the likely seasonal pattern of wintery days ahead.

Autumn leaf colour is not spectacular this year (summer was cooler than usual and heat makes the red tints in autumn). Leaves are in the yellow range - still beautiful but generally without the fiery reds and oranges. Field maples are a buttery yellow; London Planes have bronze tints. The run-away climber Virginia creeper always turns iridescent red whatever the summer temperatures.

Leaves need clearing regularly; small piles can be used in the garden as mulch to protect tender plants from frosts; and to provide cover for wildlife. Composting is the best way to dispose of leaves, but they take a year or so to break down and need dedicated bins.

Small amounts can be put in with the general compost (leaf material should not dominate the mix).

Until the first frosts many autumn and late summer plants will remain in bloom. Geraniums are still flowering; roses are now in the habit of blooming long into winter.

Rosemary has produced another flush of little blue flowers, giving the bees a late source of nectar.

Shrubs which provide a backdrop to the late autumn/winter garden include Myrtle, Mahonia aquifolium and Viburnum tinus. Myrtle is a rather talented and mysterious shrub; it can reach 5 metres (the size of a small tree) but is a slow grower, has glossy dark green aromatic leaves - and when crushed smell similar to Rosemary or Eucalyptus (without the heavy camphorous note). Myrtle has delicate white fragrant flowers in summer - followed by purple-blue berries.

Myrtle (pictured) is steeped in folklore; it was a sacred herb linked to the Greek Goddess of love and beauty Aphrodite; planted next to Temples and used in funeral rites and wedding bouquets. Myrtle is used in Aromatherapy and reputed to have medicinal properties – useful to calm anxiety and stress; for the

in winter through to spring; followed by blue-black berries.
