PULLING THE OTHER LEG Australian funnyman Adam Hills is hosting an evening at Up the Creek full of talented comedians, including Steve Day, Rosie Jones, and Dane Baptiste, supporting disabled people and their families.

Following the success of his Channel 4 show The Last Leg - originally a one-off series for the 2012 London Paralympics, Adam is passionate about supporting other disabled comedians to break down barriers and challenge negative attitudes. The Greenwich Creative Writing Group is holding a Christmas reading to celebrate the launch of their first anthology. The evening of poetry, music and short stories from the group’s debut anthology combines themes of murder, passion, memories, joy and romance. The anthology was created by local writers and their tutors who joined together to create a collection of short stories, poems, flash fictions and short prose.

The anthology is being published on November 25, and is on sale at Waterstones Greenwich for £4.99. All profits from the sale of this book go to The Greenwich Foodbank.

New Zealand comedy duo Flight of the Conchords have announced three O2 arena shows in 2018.

Aleem brings Chicago to O2 For his second time in the UK, after supporting Fifth Harmony last year, Aleem is releasing new music as part of this tour.

The American performer is based in Chicago. “It’s a big city with a budding music scene. A lot of jazz and hip hop but there’s not a recording scene,” he told the Weekender.

“I feel like I’ve always been a musician,” Aleem continued. “I started as a drummer, then learned how to play guitar. I taught myself how to sing, then at 19 I got a job at a studio, and one thing lead to another, and I moved to LA.” The performer got noticed at an open-mic night in Los Angeles. ““You come in with a guitar, and ask if you can have 15 minutes to play,” he said. “LA is a mecca of pop music.

“I started as a drummer, then learned how to play guitar.

I taught myself how to sing, then at 19 I got a job at a studio, and one thing lead to another, and I moved to LA.” You have to take your chances, try to get seen. Sometimes it’s great, sometimes it’s not.”

Aleem got his lucky break working with a producer in LA. “He happened to know the right person at the right time, and listened to my demo,” he said.

Signed to the Leighton Pope agency in London, Aleem was offered the opportunity to support Little Mix on the November dates of their huge nationwide arena tour. “I’m truly honoured,” he said. “A few years ago

when Black Magic came out –it was my jam, it was my workout mix!”

“Little Mix has their own say on who they’d like to have on tour. It’s humbling to join them,” he continued.

The tour starts in Ireland and hits all the UK’s big cities.

On tour with Fifth Harmony last year, Aleem knows what’s in store for him. “It’s a huge adjustment period.

Technically there’s a lot you have to control: voice, instrumentation but I’ll take it any day,” he said.

“It’s so funny, it’s something I dream of, but it’s pretty gruelling,” he continued. “You play these big arenas, you go to sleep at 4am, all the travel and time-zones…I try to keep a little piece of home with me, whether that’s listening to favourite music or watching Netflix. It’s key to have some time for yourself, reflect, be you, because otherwise it can get to you.”

“You get used to it, find your niche, and everyone on the road becomes your family,” he said.

The performer is excited for the O2 show later this month. “It’s going to be fun. Me and my acoustic guitar, electric guitar, new music. I’m really excited to get out,” he said. “It’s so raw, so real, with 15,000 people in the audience,” he said. “You can only see the first two rows, there’s a huge spotlight but when the show’s about to start you can judge how packed it is and you never get used to it.”

Aleem has a new single coming out on the tour, and an album/EP coming up with a lot of tours to follow. “It’s a pretty busy fall,” he said.

When asked to describe his sound, he said “I infuse modern hip hop and pop sounds with my singer songwriter nature.

“I would say the bread and butter, if you strip it all away, I am a singer songwriter.”

And finally, what’s he listening to at the moment? “My top three are Bruno Mars, the Script, and John Mayer.

That’s my trilogy!”

Restoring the onarchy A

film shot in historic Charlton House is back on DVD and iTunes for Christmas.

Director John Walsh’s Monarch is part fact, part fiction and unfolds around one night when the injured ruler, King Henry VIII, arrives at a manor house closed for the season. Henry is without the power and control of his palace and is vulnerable from those around him, and from his own sanity. Henry left England financially and morally bankrupt; his collection of enemies his only constant. Even today there is a question mark surrounding his burial and possible exhumation.

TP McKenna plays Henry; after starring alongside Richard Burton's Henry VIII in the epic Anne of a Thousand Days, Charge of the Light Brigade, Straw Dogs; and with Jean Marsh (Upstairs Downstairs, Willow and Fatherland) playing an amalgamation of his ex-wives.

Monarch unfolds on one night in the year of Henry's death, 1547.

King Henry VIII reigned for 38 years. Young and handsome, his Court was the most colourful and extravagant in Europe. Yet this glamorous exterior partly disguised his unpredictable and savagely ruthless nature. His obsession to father a legitimate male heir led him through six marriages, to make himself Supreme Head of the English Church and to cut down those who stood in his way.

The film has been painstakingly remastered from the original 35mm colour camera negative, which was recently discovered in a film vault after nearly 20 years and is now presented in full High Definition for the first time.

The double BAFTA nominated filmmaker John Walsh said during the shoot of Monarch (7-25 October 1996) his small cast and modest crew would receive daily film stock supplies directly from Kodak HQ in Hemel Hempstead.

“A refrigerated van would arrive to bring us our daily ration of 35mm camera negative (Kodak stock no: 5287),” John said. “One other production was receiving a daily delivery from the same driver, for Stanley Kubrick’s final film, the epic eighteen-month shoot, Eyes Wide Shut. When we received Mr Kubrick’s invoice after a clerical error, I was shocked and amazed at the amount of the invoice. More than the total cost of my shooting budget.”

Now nearly 20 years after making it, the film has received a full High Definition restoration.

“This was not simply a case of running the film through a telecine

machine,” he said. “The original camera negative was in a film vault and this took some finding.

When we located the project, we found more than we bargained for with over 52 cans of various footage, from film trims, cutting copies and work prints. We didn’t know if the original camera negative would be amongst all this haul. After a close examination, I was delighted to find all the original camera negative was there and is good shape for its age,” he continued. “The negative was cut onto A and B rolls which meant the film was not truly together as one cut of continuous action, but we had what we need to put the film together.”

During the extensive cleaning and restoration process, every frame of film was scanned in high definition and had over 10,000

particles removed by hand. Along with this a new 5.1 sound mix was created from the original elements.

“The film is now looking and sounding clearer and sharper than ever before,” the director said.

The process of storing and preserving original materials is one that the film and TV industry is “famously inept at,” John said. “During this process, I was surprised to find that many of the 20th century’s major film titles have lost their original elements and the restoration process starts with old battered projection prints that may have been around many cinemas. Often the original camera negatives have been lost, junked or in one famous case for the Oscar-winning Cabaret, burnt!”

The HD processing protects the future of Monarch. “It will give today’s audiences the chance to

see the wonderful performance of Jean Marsh and the towering presence of TP McKenna, regarded as one of the great of his generation and rightly so in one of his most outstanding performances,” John said.

Time is against the restoration teams as many films are fading and decaying in poor storage conditions, the director said.

“Some films are lost for all time.

$elfie$ in Sharpe focus T

"There's so much amazing performance work being made in London right now"

his autumn, dancer and choreographer Malik Nashad Sharpe is touring $elfie$: his third piece in a series built around understandings of Black and Queer aesthetics performed against our current political moment.

An unravelling performance featuring Malik alongside dancer Kam Wan (Dalston Ballet), $elfie$ holds the mirror to the audience.

“I am interested in using the formal elements of choreography in order to interrogate contemporary political, social, and emotional issues,” Malik said.

Born in Long Island, New York -a British-Caribbean-American- Malik was raised in the US but now lives in Deptford; his grandparents were married in Lewisham 50 years ago, where his grandfather worked as a bus driver.

“My grandparents were from the Caribbean and moved to London during the Windrush generation, then to New York in the ‘70s. My grandmother still has friends here,” Malik told the Weekender.

“Because my grandmother is just as much British as American, this has always been a part of my life, and I didn’t understand until I came here.”

Creatively, growing up in New York was “great.” “But I think it terms of opportunities there’s more for artists in London,” Malik said. “There’s so much amazing performance work being made in London right now.”

Selfies is his most ambitious piece so far. “It’s a series of works making around black and queer people and culture, more like worlds than narratives,” he said. “Selfies is a place to talk about difficult things for me –using the socio-political moment, and how it affects my body, and experience of life.”

Major issues the performer covers include gun violence, sexual assault, black joy, nationalism and trying to overcome nationalist tendencies.

“I started making this work before trump got elected. For a lot of us in the States things have shifted but it’s not unforeseen. Things were getting bad way before Trump got elected,” he said. “I use toy guns in my work because I’m not afraid of having a conversation about gun violence.

It’s always been there, there have always been mass shootings in the US, and the problem I feel is our politicians don’t want to speak about it because there’s so much money around it, and a culture around the freedom to bear arms, but it doesn’t work and no one will talk about it.”

This performance is a duet with Kam Wan –“he’s a great guy. My work is very difficult to do, physically, mentally; it requires a lot of focus, and attention to detail,” Malik said.

“I’m a bit of a workaholic. I’m in the in

studio every single day. It’s intense.

And I bike everywhere.”

Graduating from Williams College Massachusetts with the highest honours in experimental dance and live art, Malik also has a diploma from Laban, where he was awarded the Simone Michele Award for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography.

“My dance training started in experimental dance, and contemporary at Laban; I’ve always been the really strange one,” Malik said. “A lot of people go to dance, but I wanted to make choreography; that was always my goal. I love dancing, but I love making choregraphy.”

Get Therapy tells of Danielle’s history of drug abuse and eating disorders, and while she is content to survive on antidepressants her doctor threatens no more pills unless she agrees to

group therapy.

Kiddie rave at Tudor Barn

Eltham lights up Street performers, live music and vintage films being shown in a van will all be part of the Eltham Lights Up extravaganza.

The free annual Christmas lights switch-on will include Meccano models in the Eltham Centre, as well as pop-up performances.

A small replica double decker bus will be going up and down the high street offering free rides to children and adults accompanying them.

There will also be a parade of lanterns made by hundreds of local children.

The Christmas light switch-on is at 6pm and will be followed by a fireworks display. Eltham police station is opening its doors for the event, from 4pm to 6pm, and officers and dogs will be meeting the public.

Youngsters can also meet police horses, enter a quiz and a colouring competition to win prizes. Eltham fire station will also be open from 4pm to 7pm.

Low winter sun sparks warning about mirrored objects and fire risk

This is a monthly column from London Fire Brigade’s Greenwich Borough Fire stations for our local residents.

Each month a different firefighter will offer some safety advice that we think would help to keep everyone as safe as possible.

A

s the day’s become shorter as winter sets in FF Antonia Nicol from Eltham Red Watch wants to remind local residents to be vigilant about winter sunlight on glass or mirrored objects which can cause fires.

Antonia has been a firefighter with London Fire Brigade for the past 6 years and lives in the Greenwich borough with her family.

She says: “In the last five years we've seen 125 fires caused by the sun's rays. These incidents don't only happen in the summer as you would imagine and our statistics show that seven fires have been caused that way in this winter

"These sort of fires are not as rare

as you would think. We’ve seen everything from sparkly door knobs

to crystal balls starting fires.

"It is important, especially in predominantly south facing windows, to remove any object that could refract light. Anything that can concentrate the sun’s ray should be moved away from the window to reduce the risk of fire breaking out, especially where the sun can shine directly into the room. These include magnified shaving/make up mirrors, any mirrors with bevelled edges, crystal ornaments or handles, any ornaments or fixtures that contain diamantes and the domed bottom of aerosol cans can also refract light."

Some examples of how fires were started are, a house fire was started from the sun's rays refracting through a crystal door knob and onto a dressing gown hanging from the door which then caught fire. Fortunately, the house was empty at the time and a smoke alarm alerted builders working on an adjacent house who called us.

Earlier in that year we attended an incident when a crystal ball set light

to curtains.

A concave mirror focused the sunrays onto bedding and badly damaging first floor. A woman escaped after hearing her smoke alarm sound and was checked over

by London Ambulance Service crews.

In summer 2013, firefighters tackled a fire caused by a vanity mirror which also set fire to curtains.

A family home was set alight after a Nutella jar, which was on the windowsill and being used to store loom bands reflected low sunlight causing the blinds to catch fire.

The Brigade’s top three safety tips are: • Keep mirrors and crystal or glass objects away from the sunny sills • Fit at least one smoke alarm per floor and test them every week to make sure they work and the batteries are not flat.

• If you have a fire, close the door on the blaze, get out stay out and call the Brigade

here’s something just so British about fish and chips. Even the mere thought of the aroma makes my mouth water.

And as I’m originally from a seaside town it was seen as a staple as I grew up. It was therefore with great enthusiasm that I trooped down to my local purveyor, Two Happy Chefs, on Eltham High Street on a chilly Friday evening.

Owners, Huseyin and Hakan, have been in the catering industry since the mid ‘80s and brought their expertise to Eltham just last year. Their bespoke little business couldn’t be more welcoming, with the familiar vinegary aroma greeting you as soon as you cross the threshold.

What is great about Two Happy Chefs is not only the huge choice on offer, but also the fact that most of the fish is cooked from fresh.

In fact, Huseyin even brought me a selection to pick from. I decided – having never tried it before – to

And the quality of the food was truly excellent too. My fish was succulent with batter that was crispy and not too thick and as all of the produce is fried in

I was reliably informed that my companions’ dishes were equally as good and we were also treated to an extra portion of calamari to try. We washed it all down with a couple of glasses of pop and were left feeling thoroughly replete and ready for the weekend.

1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by SGN who need to carry out Gas mains replacement.

2. The Order will come into operation on 22nd November 2017 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 6 months. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading in (i)Delafield Road at the junction of Charlton Church Lane, (ii)Floyd Road at the junction of Charlton Church Lane except on match days, (iii) Priolo between Victoria Way and Sundorne Road, (iv) Swallowfield Road at the Junction of Priolo Road and (v) Sundorne Road between Priolo Road and Charlton Church Lane will be made one way in an Eastbound direction.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via (i) Charlton Church Lane, Sundorne Road Swallowfield Road and Vice versa. (ii) Harvey Gardens, Charlton Lane, Lansdowne Lane, The heights Charlton Church Lane and Vice versa. (iii) Victoria Way, Wellington Gardens, Charlton Church Lane, Sundorne Road and vice versa. (iv)Priolo Road, Victoria Way, Wellington Gardens Charlton Church Lane Sundorne Road and vice versa. (v) Charlton Church Lane, Wellington Gardens Victoria Way and Priolo Road. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.

west of Brookhill Road; (c) (i) provide that in addition to the roads within the existing WB CPZ, the extended part of WB CPZ will include

the roads and lengths of roads listed in Schedule 1 to this Notice and will retain operational hours of between 8.30am and

6.30pm on Mondays to Saturdays inclusive “the WB CPZ hours”; (ii) provide a combination of permit holders (or 1 hour free) parking places and single yellow line waiting restrictions that

will operate during the WB CPZ hours throughout the extended part of WB CPZ except where the waiting restrictions referred

to a sub-paragraph 2(b) above will be provided; (d) provide that residents whose postal address is within WB CPZ and residents of (odd) Nos. 1 to 55 Plumstead

Common Road will be able to purchase permits and visitors’ vouchers for parking within that CPZ at the rates set out in
