WINTER WARMERS

Children’s charity Barnardo’s is calling on shoppers to have a pre-Christmas clear out and donate their pre-loved winter woollies to its shops in Eltham, Thamesmead, Downham, and Brixton. Winter clothes -particularly jumpers and coats- are flying off the rails at the four south London stores.

As the weather turns colder, the charity desperately needs more adults’ and kids’ winter clothing as well as unused and preloved quality toys in a bid to meet the demand.

All money raised in the shops is ploughed back into Barnardo’s services supporting vulnerable children, young people and families across the capital, including those who are sexually exploited, who are at risk of homelessness or who are leaving care.

Barnardo’s south London shops can be found in Eltham High Street; Battery Road, Thamesmead; Brixton Road, Brixton, and Bromley Road, Downham.

Friday 10 November: Woolwich Town Hall A two minute silence will be observed at 11am in memory of those who fought and died or were injured in the causes of peace and freedom. The Mayor and the Leader will be in attendance.

LIGHT UP

Do You Vintage? is holding a Pop-Up Vintage and Craft Fair on Sunday 26 November (11am-5pm).

Highlights include jazz/swing singer Steve Conway, free crochet workshops, a vintage tearoom, Prosecco served on the terrace, and Greenwich-based dance group Lindy Kicks. Stalls feature local traders selling vintage and retro clothing, jewellery, accessories, homewares, artwork, and handcrafted and upcycled items. A tarot reader and make-up artist are offering vintage makeovers and hairdos.

The fair, organised by Julie Ricketts, is also a chance to visit the Grade II listed 1920s Shrewsbury House, which faced closure earlier this year.

Greenwich bids for culture crown

W

hat would you spend £1.1million on to celebrate art and culture in Greenwich?

This is the question council leader Denise Hyland is asking residents as Greenwich prepares to submit its bid to become London Borough of Culture.

Two boroughs will be selected as Borough of Culture for 2019 and 2020 and will be given £1.1million worth of funding for a year of cultural celebrations.

When asked that very question, Councillor Hyland said she was “not sure exactly what we would spend it on” – and that she wanted to “listen to people’s voices”.

“We’ve been holding meetings with the community to ask people what it is they want in terms of a cultural offer,” she told the Weekender.

“Greenwich as a borough is a great place for tourists to come, but we also want to make sure that our residents and students and anybody that has a connection with the borough is actually getting a cultural offer.

“We are a place of great culture – we’ve got a palace in Greenwich and one over in Eltham – but what we do find is there’s a disparity between the cultural offer across

“We are a tremendously diverse borough; we have people from all around the world living here, so the potential for culture is immense.” the borough, so we are looking to get conveyance between the culture of the west of the borough and the east.

“We want to make sure that the arts do really well, not just in Greenwich, but also in Plumstead and Abbeymead and so on.”

The council leader said she wanted to “spread culture throughout the borough” and make it accessible to every child and adult, no matter what their circumstances are.

“I do think there’s a sense of

people should have an entitlement, no matter how fat their wallet is, in terms of their access to culture,” she said.

“I was a teacher and used to take secondary school boys up to the theatre and for some of them it was their first experience of going to the theatre and they were fourteen.”

“I also think it’s about the value of living in communities and actually belonging to the community,” she added.

“Take something like the

Elthamread, where people are collectively reading the same book and are enjoying doing something rooted in their community, but they also enjoy experiences outside their own culture as well.

“We are a tremendously diverse borough; we have people from all around the world living here, so the potential for culture is immense.”

Cllr Hyland nodded to the £31million the council has already invested in Woolwich Creative District – a project which will see four 300-year-old buildings,

previously used as ammunitions factories, renovated to be used as creative space.

“I think we are doing our bit and we could do with some help and acknowledgement and recognition from the mayor’s office,” she said.

“Our bid will go in in December and if successful we would win £1.1million, which is fantastic.”

The council is asking people to share their support on Twitter by taking a photo of a ‘hidden gem’ in the borough and using the hashtag #greenwichmeans

She lives in Sydenham: “Yes Greenwich should win as it’s a good place where lots of people live together in a diverse community. Greenwich Park is beautiful and there is a lot of choice for bars and restaurants nearby. There are spaces here where you can have all sorts of days out.”

“Absolutely, without a doubt. Out of the boroughs in south London, Greenwich has the most going on. Greenwich also scores because you’ve got an unusual

shopping experience, the olde worlde vibe. Greenwich has lots of antique shops and over the years has grown a slightly different type of retail. You can’t compare it to other areas nearby. And there’s always something going on in the covered market.”

Carolyn: “Even if I wasn’t a resident I’d say Greenwich, as we have the edge. We need the award to go towards somewhere that depicts multicultural London, and see funds go towards community cohesion.”

Jayne: “Greenwich has a good chance as there are lots of museums, theatre and heritage. But I think Tower Hamlets has more hidden treasures that aren’t as well known. They need to look for a borough that could grow.”

Why does Greenwich deserve to win?

“We already have a strong cultural offer around heritage as a world heritage site, but the big opportunity is to share this success with parts of the borough that are more low key. We’ve got the perfect blend of existing cultural attractions and areas that need more support.”

What makes Greenwich stand out?

“GMT is a truly global brand.

Wherever in the world you go, people have heard of GMT. The legacy of navigation and travel in Greenwich brings nine million visitors every year to the heritage site, and we believe it’s the biggest London destination outside Zone 1.

“Not many people associate the O2 with being in Greenwich.

The world’s number one music destination is just eight minutes from a world heritage site. I’m not sure anywhere else in the world has that combination of old and new so close.”

What impact would being awarded London’s Borough of Culture have on Greenwich?

“Culture is a very powerful tool for change and becoming a London Borough of Culture would bring forward investment into the area.

We want to increase overnight stays, and build on Greenwich as a destination, not just a day trip – promoting places like the Thames barrier, the riverfront, and Greenwich peninsular as a place for leisure activities.

We aim to grow tourism by 28% within five years.”

What would the funds pay for?

“Woolwich stands out for me as a key beneficiary. With the arrival of Crossrail in 2018, Woolwich will soon be just 20 minutes from central London. More than £30 million of funding is already going into infrastructure in the area, and developing disused buildings, including building 41, to create a hub for the performing arts.”

What is your favourite hidden gem in Greenwich?

“Severndroog Castle in Eltham.

It brings together the forest, Greenwich’s maritime history and the role of the East India Company with an amazing view across London.”

F

ollowing a series of UK shows last month, New York songstress Sunny Ozell talks to the Weekender about her new album Overnight Lows.

The album is the first new music Sunny, who is married to actor Patrick Stewart, has released since her critically acclaimed debut album, 2015’s Take It With Me. “It’s still a work in progress,” Sunny told the Weekender. “I made it with the same group of gents I did the last record with; we’ve been together for a while now and have settled into the thing that we do well, which is kind of a roots American rock soul kind of thing. I’m not cool enough to talk about this stuff!”

The musician, who started classical vocal training at eleven and played the violin from age four, describes her sound more generally as soul. “You can apply it to anything from Memphis soul to Texas soul. There’s definitely Detroit soul –it’s more mo-towny,” she explained.

Growing up in Nevada, Sunny cites the Killers as Vegas’ most wellknown musical export. “I grew up in Reno, which has a totally different culture –it’s an eight hour drive from Vegas. There was a small music scene in Reno. I left at 19 and went to university in Colorado–that was when everyone was doing ska, and punk was cool,” she said.

“I’d done classical training, which was super challenging, until I was 18, and when I got to university I joined a blues band, and stopped doing the classical thing,” she said.

“Boulder had a great live music scene –Denver and Boulder are 30 minutes apart. Bill Graham -the San Francisco promoter who put on concerts with people like the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin- his company Bill Graham Presents was headquartered out of Denver so it was the epicentre of live music,” she said.

At 26, Sunny moved from Colorado to New York. “That again was another education,” she mused.

“The standard in New York is very high, and that’s great. All the gents in my band are New York musicians; we played a gig in California with a different musician and the first time we played with him he said ‘you guys sound like New York City,’ and that is such a compliment.” The core unit of Sunny’s band is four guys playing drums, bass, guitar, and keyboard.

New York proved a musical education. “It’s almost as important to go out and listen to a lot of music,” Sunny said.

“I was going out three nights a week listening to live music. I did the thing that a lot of creative types do: I worked in restaurants waiting tables so I could do the creative thing. The stamina I had in those days! It was head down, ass up.”

“When we first started seeing each other, we thought ‘cool, we’re both artists, there’s so much overlap,’ but the more we get to know each other the more we understand there’s not. What he does is really solitary. Your reality as an actor seems pretty lonely. The older I get, the more I love my musicians.

I love the social aspect, the camaraderie,” she said.

Recently Sunny performed at Jools Holland’s studio in Greenwich. “He has this BBC Radio 2 show, and it includes singing a song on air with his band, and you haven’t met the band before,” she explained. “You carve out 20 minutes, and it’s super fun.

What I realised is musicians are musicians. Even though I didn’t know these people, we had a shorthand, a mutual respect, and are comfortable very quickly. I love other musicians. It’s such a

privilege to do this.”

Sunny plans to release her record first in the UK, then in the States.

“I have a foot on the ground here in England. Patrick and I split our time between England and America, and the radio experience in the UK is, for us, kind of more vibrant. People tune in to the Chris Evans show, or Jools Holland to specifically get that thing that the programme does. And that’s special,” she said.

"I miss living in Bermondsey, watching the river rise and fall

everyday. More than once, I mudlarked along the Thames and found old bits of old things that now sit proudly in a windowsill. That neighbourhood fascinated me, particularly the history--everything from the ruins of King Edward III's riverside manor house, to the dockside warehouses. Layers and layers of human habitation, and the neighbourhood only seemed to be getting more vibrant. I return quite a bit still to visit Borough Market and my favourite stall Da Calabria."

Wherever she is, music is a constant in Sunny's life. “This record is all original. It’s very personal. It’s been a rough year, the planet seems to be under duress, much more than ever before, there’s a feeling of urgency, and turning to music has been liberating, and a relief. I’m hoping to share that with the folks. What else do we do in these times?”

I

n Greenwich a unique auction of beautiful artworks made of wood from Greenwich Royal Park is set to raise funds for Freedom from Torture, the UK’s only charity dedicated to the rehabilitation and protection of survivors of torture.

Local artist and Freedom from Torture supporter Michael Maisey came up with the idea for this unusual auction after discovering plans to cut down one of the Royal Park’s 300-year-old sweet chestnut trees. Park staff agreed to donate wood from the felled tree, which Michael distributed to 15 of the UK’s most prominent and successful woodturners.

They have created a collection of 40 unique wooden artworks, ranging from elegant bowls and vases to more abstract forms.

These artworks have been returned to Greenwich for an exhibition at the Greenwich Gallery. The collection will then be auctioned at the Trafalgar Tavern, Park Row, Greenwich SE10 9NW on the evening of the 17th November, with all proceeds going to support Freedom from Torture’s vital work with survivors of torture.

The Old Royal Naval College is holding a lecture on Italian decorative painter Antonio Verrio (November 9, 6:30pm-8pm). The talk considers how Verrio, who introduced baroque mural painting into England, paved the way for Sir James Thornhill and his work at Greenwich.

The Deptford Dub Club is hosting Eddie d’Oxman’s Foundation Special. The live auction will also feature a collaborative performance by Freedom from Torture’s creative writing therapy group Write to Life and actor Simon Russell Beale.

Quentin Blake said: “As a longstanding supporter of Freedom from Torture, I am delighted to take part in this year’s exhibition and auction by donating an artwork entitled “Freedom!”

ewisham Choral Society is putting on a regal extravaganza of music

Sounds Imperial showcases the two composers, inextricably linked with the imperial court of the Holy Roman Empire, of which their Austrian homeland was a part. It’s easy to see why Mozart’s majestic Coronation Mass, with its glorious music for choir and soloists, was a favourite of the Viennese court.

The court later commissioned Haydn’s rousing Te Deum in C for the Emperor’s wife Maria Theresa.

The fiery opening of Haydn’s delightful motet Insanae et vanae curae, describing man’s ‘vain and raging cares,’ contrasts with its lyrical conclusion urging us to trust in God. Following his magnificent performance of the Elvira Madigan concerto last year, pianist Nico de Villiers returns to play the darker tones of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 20. The choir is accompanied

ltham is being transformed as the Royal Borough of Greenwich hosts the free annual Eltham Lights Up Christmas lights switch-on.

Highlights include street performers, a live music stage, and vintage film showings inside a cinema van. The Eltham Centre features Meccano model displays and pop up performances, while the cafĂŠ will be open until late.

A small scale replica of a vintage double decker bus will be going up and down the high street, offering free rides to children and adults accompanying them.

The Christmas lights switch-on is at 6pm, followed by a spectacular pyrotechnic finale.

Eltham Police station is opening its doors for the event, from 4pm to 7pm. Local officers and dogs from the police dog training school will be there to meet and greet the public. There will also be the opportunity to meet police horses, take part in a quiz, enter a children's colouring in competition to win prizes, and chat to police officers and cadets about joining the Met cadets.

Eltham Fire Station will also be open from 4pm to 7pm to have a look around.

As part of Eltham Lights Up, a number of town centre shops and businesses are holding special promotions or staying open late.

A spectacular illuminated parade of lanterns, created by hundreds of local children and their families, follows the Christmas lights switch-on.

New care home to hold open weekend The new Rectory Court Care Home is hosting an open weekend on Saturday and Sunday, November 18 and 19, when people are invited to pop in for tea, coffee and a chat.

Doors will be open from 10am to 4pm on the open weekend, and the team will be on hand to explain the process of moving in to care and the type and style of care provided at Rectory Court.

The refurbishment of this new luxury Blackheath home was only completed last month, and a formal opening event, with guests including the Mayor of Lewisham, local politicians, charities and friends is scheduled for November 8.

The home will be opened by a Community Champion. Rectory Court selected three community champions from public nominations. One overall Champion of Champions will be chosen on the day to open the home and will receive £500 for charity; the other two winners will receive £100 for their chosen charity.

Home Admissions Advisor Sue Dawber explained that the homes, which are part of the Cinnamon Care Collection, strive to be different in the care provided for their residents. Gina Lim, General Manager of Rectory Court said: “We are rightly proud of the care team we have working at Rectory Court and our sister home, Leah Lodge

in Blessington Road. One of the benefits of having two homes close to one another is that we mutually support one another. Success at the Village Locale “And that, my friends, was the last I saw of the clafoutis...'

lackheath Village remains one of the last largely untouched high streets; its many independent shops with their frontage hardly changed for years keep this small part of the borough a place of beauty.

So when a chain manages to wheedle its way in it has to ensure that it does not spoil this corner of heaven. Locale seems to have fitted in well.

From the outside this Italian restaurant is quite nondescript, but that changes once you enter and climb the stairs to the dining area in this high-ceilinged space. It was at the top that Jenny greeted Kay and I and told us she would be looking after our needs for the evening. And she did a wonderful job. Her first task was to allay Kay’s fusspot fears of just about everything that isn’t chicken or chips and, along with some gentle coaxing from myself, got her to try things that she would have otherwise dismissed.

But first things first, a cocktail to waken the palate. I had a Sweet Gin Symphony, a lively drink that was warming as well as exhilarating, while my companion went for a smooth and creamy

Pina Colada. While we supped on those we spoke of the dead and the dying. Well, it was almost Halloween!

The starters that we shared came nicely presented. The garlic and chili prawns looked good with cannellini beans and red pepper coulis, although I’m not sure the beans were the best accompaniment. They did, however, go very well with the slow cooked baby back ribs - and that’s the best thing about sharing and mixing.

Kay was looking forward to steak but got Jenny to talk her through all the sauces before she came down on the side of the Béarnaise.

Then we both had to convince her that Rib-Eye was better than

sirloin, especially if she wanted it ‘well done’ – “I don’t wanna see no blood on me plate,” she squealed.

Kay garnished her steak with chips and onion rings.

I chose the grilled stone bass only because I don’t recall having it before. I was very pleased with my choice as it was a very nice fish, with a taste and texture similar to rock salmon - the chip shop stalwart. It came simply served with spinach and butternut squash, and that was enough not to overwhelm the bass. I paired it with a Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley. Good call.

We had some time before dessert to finish our drinks and discuss sons and daughters and

mums and getting old (Kay’s 50 next year but doesn’t want anyone to know). Plus I had to convince her to try some of the Italian desserts and not just have ice cream. Every time I read out a foreign word she pulled a face but eventually I talked her round by slipping in English words like custard, sponge, cream and chocolate into my descriptions.

When the two plates were placed before us Kay looked apprehensive. She tentatively cut through a corner of the Tiramisu with her spoon and took a mouthful. I looked on anxiously.

“It’s alright,” she said, “but too chocolatey.’” Too chocolatey?

That’s an impossibility. How can anything be too chocolatey?

The more chocolate the better!

Everyone knows that.

And so to the Peach Clafoutis.

She sliced through the sponge-like flan, collecting a dab of vanilla ice cream and peach sauce on the way, and had a taste. “Cor, yeh, this is nice,” she slurped.

And that, my friends, was the last I saw of the clafoutis, although I was more than happy to not have to share the tiramisu. Especially when I had it with a beautiful little dessert wine - Monbazillac.

Our night in Locale was deemed

a success. Kay had tried and enjoyed dishes she would not have given a second glance at, and agreed that the rib-eye is better than sirloin. If only I could get her to have steak medium rare.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich with the consent of the Secretary of State for Transport has made an Order to facilitate the staging of the annual “Eltham Lights Up” event on Eltham High Street on Thursday 16th November 2017. The effect of the Order will be to temporarily close certain roads and impose various traffic restrictions, as follows: (a) on Thursday 16th November 2017, between 4:00

p.m. and 8:00 p.m. only, to:

(i) prohibit vehicles from entering or proceeding in Eltham High Street, between Well Hall Road and Footscray Road [Note: this will prevent vehicles from entering or exiting Roper Street other than for essential access];

(ii) prohibit vehicles from entering Elm Terrace and

Pound Place;

(iii) impose a one-way working in an eastbound

direction in Dobell Road between Well Hall Road

(iv) prohibit all vehicles, except buses, from entering that part of Footscray Road situated to the north of its junction with Southend Crescent, at that junction; and

(v) prohibit vehicles from waiting or loading in

Eltham High Street, both sides between Well Hall

Road and Footscray Road; (b) on Thursday 16th November 2017, throughout the

whole day, to:

(i) prohibit vehicles from waiting or loading in: (A) Archery Road, both sides between Dobell Road and Gourock Road; (B) Footscray Road, the south-west side, from Newlands Court north-westward for 40 metres; (C) Gourock Road, the north-west side only; and (D) North Park, both sides; and
