Lette me tell you Author brings fun and full frontal frankness to Greenwich’s Girls Night Out

A

ustralian author Kathy Lette shot to fame with the cult classic novel Puberty Blues, which she penned when she was just 17-years-old.

She’s gone on to write 12 international bestsellers, including Mad Cows (which was made into a film starring Joanna Lumley and Anna Friel), How to Kill Your Husband - and Other Handy Household Hints (staged by the Victorian opera), The Boy Who Fell to Earth, Courting Trouble, and Best Laid Plans, soon to be a TV series.

She’s worked as a newspaper columnist, a TV sitcom writer, and raises an autistic son –and she does it all with a sense of humour and inimitable style.

Now Kathy’s coming to Greenwich theatre with Girls Night Out: a psychological strip tease spanning from Puberty Blues to Menopausal Blues. The night promises tellall tales of marriage, pregnancy, childbirth, mastitis, sexist bosses, teenage-daughter-wrangling, ageing toy boys, and personal accounts of making the Queen laugh, hiding Julian Assange in her attic, tongue kissing Prince William, and close encounters of the George Clooney kind.

The Sydney-born writer has called London home for 28 years; she can often be found at the Savoy (where she was writer in residence) drinking a cocktail named after her.

“London’s an amazing city to live in but I love Australia and go back a

lot. The English can be a bit alarmed by me,” Kathy told the Weekender.

“They used to say Geoffrey [Robertson, her husband] was this handsome QC and he was going out with beautiful Nigella Lawson, and what was he doing with me: a colonial nymphomaniac loudmouth?

I can’t cook, I use my smoke alarm as a timer. But the trick is not to care,” she said.

The 58-year-old was famously snapped wearing a Corgi patterned suit to meet the Queen. “They were having all the Aussies at Buckingham Palace: Rolf Harris, Hugh Jackman, Elle McPherson, Collette Dinnigan. I got my surfie girlfriends to make me a corgi suit, I had no fitting, did my make-up in the rear view mirror with my head out the window for an impromptu blow-dry, and when I met the Queen I said “I’m worried one of your corgis will mate with my leg” and the next day it was front page of the Sydney Morning Herald, and the Age- me making the Queen laugh,” she recalled. “It goes to show: always be yourself.”

It’s this spirit that guides Kathy’s one-woman show. “I am not a comedian. I’m not a stand up. I’m just an author with a hopefully witty way with words,” she said.

“Scientists tell us laughter comes from the oldest part of the brain, our humour is cathartic and confessional. This is a way to strip off to our emotional undies in 3.6 seconds, and it’s incredibly bonding.”

“In the show I just talk about if I have any skill as a writer, it’s to put into words what women might be thinking,” she continued. “When I wrote Foetal Attraction, and Mad Cows I thought no one has told the truth about childbirth.

I can’t be the only one finding it this hard. I couldn’t find anything in literature: Jane Austen, the Brontes, Germaine Greer, Simone de Beauvoir, Gloria Steinem. Babies and books didn’t mix.”

Laughter is the author’s lifeline.

“You can laugh or cry. Cry and you get salt in your champagne,” Kathy said. “There’s a lot to laugh about.

I also try to make my show a bit empowering. I want women thinking they can take on the world. I no longer want a man’s seat on the bus; I want a man’s seat on the board.”

The author has always been ahead of the curve, co-writing Puberty Blues: a teen novel about sex and strung-out surfie gangs in the suburbs of Sydney, with her friend Gabrielle Carey, when they were just teenagers. “I don’t think we would have done it if we didn’t have each other,” Kathy reflected.

“We could stand up against the boys because we had that camaraderie.

I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to blow a literary raspberry at the boys.”

This was ‘70s Australia, when Germaine Greer was rhyming slang for beer. Now described as feminist and an iconic, important piece of Australian literature, Puberty Blues was initially rejected by 35 publishers. Since being published, it’s been made into a major film and miniseries, and the prologue is written by Kylie Minogue.

When I asked if men can attend Girls Night Out Kathy warned “only if they’re very, very brave. They’ll be our male sacrifice! The men who do come are pretty nice; they’ve got to be ok with girl talk and like female company. Often I get three generations of women: a female trifecta.”

erald Moore Gallery at Eltham College is hosting a special group exhibition over the next few weeks, with work by some of the most celebrated artists in the UK.

Rooted as a centre for modern and contemporary art with an educational focus, Gerald Moore Gallery works tirelessly to create a community, which offers innovative learning opportunities and to foster meaningful experiences with art.

The gallery programme is supported by the Arts Council England and the Canada Council of the Arts, allowing the gallery to play a significant role in aiding individuals of all ages in exploring the importance of art in schools and beyond.

Entitled Tender Blues, the latest exhibition features a mixture of media created by seven highly acclaimed and hugely talented artists.

Gabriele Beveridge, who holds an MA in Fine Art Media from the Slade School of Fine Art (London) and a BA in photography from Falmouth College of Arts, has had solo exhibitions in London, and Lyon. Gabriele shows her Skimming the Daydream (found poster, hand-blown glass 2017). Her works are found in prestigious collections such as the Zabludowicz Collection, the Silvie Fleming Collection and the Saatchi Collection, as well as various international collections.

Maj-Gret Guapås showcases three works - Windy Silence I (acrylic and mixed wax on canvas, 2017), Open Ended Dead End, (acrylic and mixed wax on canvas, 2017) and Yonder I, (acrylic and mixed wax on canvas, 2017), while Rose O’Gallivan - an artist and writer based in London- displays Indebted to Cybele by Val & co w/ Eve et al (mixed media, 2017).

Ayckbourn's seasonal classic

C

hristmas has come early in Charlton this year, with Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s classic, Seasons Greetings about to be staged at the glorious Alexandra Hall.

Rehearsals are in full swing for the production, which will be presented by the much-celebrated local drama company, The Alexandra Players from 25 – 28 October.

Sir Alan Ayckbourn is known for his intelligent and fast-paced plays, with works like A Chorus of Disapproval, Bedroom Farce and How the Other Half Loves regularly performed by both professional and amateur groups all over the country. With a career that has spanned almost 60 years, the playwright is still contributing to the theatrical landscape however, and his new play The Divide (Parts One and Two) will be performed at the Old Vic Theatre in the New Year after receiving its première in Edinburgh.

But audiences in Charlton will be treated to his darkly comic festive farce and can begin to get into the Christmas spirit - or perhaps leave with a sense of foreboding with the impending onslaught of the yuletide celebrations.

Set in the 1980s, Seasons Greetings follows a dysfunctional family for four days over the Christmas period as tensions rise, alcohol flows and relationships become strained, leading to the inevitable carnage.

The play received its London première and the Greenwich Theatre in 1982 before transferring to the West End. It was revived to great acclaim in 2010 at the National Theatre, a production, which starred Catherine Tate as the contemptuous Belinda.

The Alexandra Players depiction of the modern classic - which is directed by Juliette Harrison - follows their huge success earlier this year with two one-act plays (Black Comedy and Who Calls?), which marked the group’s 60th anniversary.

Barrel of laughs... if you like beer and go with friends!

R

ight from the start, I must confess that as a forty year old woman on my own, I’m fully aware I was never going to get the most out of Oktoberfest on Greenwich Peninsula, but not to be beaten, I dutifully went along to the German Beer festival with an open mind and attempted to immerse myself in the party atmosphere.

Set adjacent to the O2 Arena and just across the river from Canary Wharf, the event has inhabited its own corner of the peninsula with wooden huts, large marquees and funfair rides to bring a taste of Bavaria to South East London.

And once through the airport style security - be aware, you are not even allowed to enter with liquids or aerosols - you can immerse yourself in a world of brash music, stodgy tucker and, of course, beer.

As you would expect, the largest marquee is set out with benches and a large bar area, with a stage at one end. There is table service from Lederhosen-clad staff for drinks, but you do have to go and queue for food yourself. Despite the fact that it was quite early and it was a weeknight, it took a good twenty minutes before I was even

served. When the food did arrive (on a polystyrene plate) it was not great quality, but then what did I expect?

If I’d drank a few steins of beer and was with a group of mates, I’m sure the rubbery white German sausage and cardboard pretzel served with luminous mustard (for a whopping £7.50) would have been just what I needed to soak up the alcohol, but sober, I’ll admit I struggled to stomach it.

The beer was good however, but at £6.50 a pint I was rather expecting the nectar of the gods and with Oompah band music played as we entered and cheesy disco tunes (with the MC encouraging a singalong) to really get the party going, it wasn’t long before the whole place erupted with joyful exuberance.

As for me, I took the playing of DJ Ötzi’s “Hey Baby” (and the break for everyone to chorus “Huuu Haa!”) as my exit music and retired (almost) gracefully back to my humble abode.

I’m sure Oktoberfest is a cracking night out if you go with a group, but be prepared to drink, be merry and make your own fun. Oh, and it’s probably best to eat before you go!

October is the best time to add new additions to the borders

eptember had a chilly feel with a mix of sunshine and showers.

Rain and gales usually characterise October’s weather but occasionally there are spells of calm and warm conditions.

As autumn progresses light levels decrease, night-time temperatures continue to fall – hastening ‘die-back’ of remaining summer annuals/perennials.

Key areas of work are clearing the old foliage and annuals as well as raking up leaves. Ideally, any digging required needs to be completed by the end of October - to allow weathering of the soil. Once the clocks go back later in the month (29th) and day light hours continue reducing, there are less opportunities to work in the garden.

During the winter months inspiration for next season’s planting can be found in books as well as the gardening catalogues. The Complete Gardener

fruit, flowers, herbs and vegetables with the focus on organic cultivation.

(This book would make an ideal gift).

Available in paperback priced £12 or hardback (preferable for a gardening book) at £15. Another useful title is ‘RHS Pruning Plant by Plant’ DK (paperback £7.99). It is often tricky to know when and how to prune - this book is a good place to start learning how it is done - or to refresh your skills.

October is the best time to add new additions to the borders, there is time for roots to become established and plants get off to a quicker start in spring; choose the summer flowering Cranesbill (hardy Geranium) and Salvia nemorosa – a multi talented plant with aromatic leaves, an attractive habit plus deep blue flowers that are present throughout summer into autumn.

These perennials are about to become dormant, specimens bought now will be roots with fading foliage. Protect the crowns in winter with compost/leaf mould.

It is also time to plant wallflowers; they are available as wilted, bare rooted foliage - not very inspiring. But this is the usual condition - and once planted they become established over autumn, producing a welcome colourful display of flowers in early spring. Suitable for container growing,

the wallflowers can be tucked in with bulbs and evergreens.

Flowers are getting scarce in the October garden; but there is the prolific Michaelmass Daisy associated with the start of autumn. Usually in deep blues and purples (also lavender, pink, white) they bloom for weeks. The bees

and butterflies love them. Also look out for tiny pale pink perfumed Cyclamen easy to overlook. The bold and bright Dahlias are still hanging on – just.

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) Victoria Way PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out Sewer Lining.

2. The Order will come into operation on 23rd October 2017 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 1 week. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in Victoria Way from Frank Burton Close to Rathmore Road.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via (i) Victoria Way, Eastbound on Woolwich Road, U-turn at the roundabout with the junction of Gallon Close, Westbound on Woolwich Road, Charlton Church Lane, Delafield Road, Inverne Road and Fossdene. (ii) Fossdene Road, Inverne Road, Delafield Road, Charlton Church Lane Westbound on Woolwich Road Victoria Way. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
