Changing the face of food O

ctober 1 marked the 15 year anniversary of the Greenwich Community Food Initiative, which Claire Pritchard started. Today, the CEO of Greenwich CoOperative Development Agency (GCDA) focuses her time on making the borough healthier, and educating locals on nutrition and the food business.

Over the years the GCDA has helped Greenwich residents access a healthier diet, helped reduce the environmental impact of food waste, and supported community and social enterprises. There's been a community greengrocer initiative, cookery clubs, food co-ops, community cafes and catering businesses.

“We need to change the face of all food,” Claire told the Weekender. “We were chosen to embed an approach of healthy food, sustainable food, affordable food in the borough, and to support new food businesses, surplus projects, and food poverty,” she said.

During the summer school holidays this year, the GCDA trialed a programme where they delivered 1000 meals, across Greenwich, for children eligible for school meals. These children are particularly vulnerable during school holidays when they don’t have access to school meals. “It’s about how we build on existing infrastructure,” Claire said.

“Ingredients are very cheap –we get surplus from Fair Share in Deptford where thousands of tonnes of food goes to waste or animal feed,” she said. “We paid £800 for our membership and got £13,000 worth of food last year. It’s high quality and within date –we had crates and crates of organic baby food that was printed in Danish so they couldn’t sell it in supermarkets.”

The GCDA has also developed food growing sites, encouraging people to grow food in their

garden or on balconies. “We have a drop by session once a week teaching people how to grow their own food,” Claire said. “I think the core function we have is sharing knowledge,” she continued.

“Everything we do is training. We have 90 cookery clubs a year, we try to reach over 1000 people in Greenwich and Lewisham, teaching them to adapt cooking

to be healthier, reducing fats or sugar, and teaching family budgeting.”

Information sharing is key, Claire said. “We have incredibly skilled people, dieticians, and nutritionists helping us to raise public health knowledge.”

“Heart disease and obesity have overtaken smoking as cause of death,” she continued, drawing

on economic inequality, and environment as causes.

The GCDA is not grant funded.

“We raise funds through our business; 49 percent is running our own restaurants and consultancy. We’ve won private contracts with the council, two to public health, two under economic training,” she explained. “It’s a very competitive

process.”

Fifteen years ago, the NHS was doing work in south Greenwich looking at the life expectancy and poverty around food. “There was poor access to good fruit and vegetables. If you live in an area of high deprivation you can pay three times more for food because you have smaller shops –like Nisa and Cost Cutter who don’t have the buying power of the big supermarkets,” Claire said. “We were working in the area, and people told us they wanted a fruit and veg stall. We set it up as a co-op.

It proved so popular that a grant was found and I was recruited to do five years’ work; it was one of the biggest food projects in the UK.” “At one point the Greenwich community food co-op had stalls everywhere. It’s very hard to sell enough fruit and veg to make it work: £300-£400 a day with volunteers running stalls,” Claire said. “Everything is really perishable. We would set up projects and leave them to run themselves. We realised if we really want to make changes we should become an organisation and take the risk ourselves, rather than asking people with low incomes to take on that financial risk.”

The only protected benefit for food is the Healthy Start voucher. “If you’re pregnant or have children under five, you can get these vouchers which give you £3.10 off food per week,” Claire said. “Parents use it for powdered milk. You can use it for fruit and veg, and exchange it for healthy food. The terrible thing is that across London £5 million aren’t used every year.

Greenwich only has a 70 percent uptake.” The main problem is accessing the vouchers. “You have to fill in forms, it’s a complex process, you have to be on benefits and prove that you’re pregnant. But there’s people really in need. Currently there’s £150,000 of unclaimed vouchers in Greenwich.”

Claire is also a trustee of Borough Market. “We basically own and manage the market on behalf of the community of Southwark, as it doesn’t have a company status,” she said. “The terror attacks were emotionally difficult, but the traders and staff have been really happy about the way staff responded. We had reserves and were able to refund all of people’s costs. The cost to traders is really high because they lost stock and money, and it’s a hard legacy now that Borough Market will always be remembered for that attack.”

God's green earth A spa retreat, barn yoga, and rambles in the Hundred Acre Woods

I

thought I was worlds away from the Hunter wellies, fourwheel-drives, and rosy cheeks that characterise the English countryside, but it’s closer than you think.

On a recent trip to Green Farm, I finished work in Bermondsey at 4pm, and by 6pm I was in Kent, surrounded by dogs, sheep, cows, ducks, chicken, bees, bats, and a bunch of kids from Southwark on a camping trip.

Farm spas are having quite a moment. They combine luxury with the organic, back to nature, farm-to-table lifestyle that we dystopian city dwellers dream of (when we’re not dreaming of electric sheep).

The bliss and beauty of Green Farm is a mere 27-minute train ride from Stratford train station, but before you reach the green, green grass of home you have to walk through a frenetic, tourist crammed Westfield to get to the platform. My 24-hour stint in the sticks was, as far as city breaks go, so easy.

The only thing I really knew about Kent was that Dickens used to ramble there on his famous night walks; traveling on foot from London to Rochester while struggling with insomnia. What I hadn’t ever considered was how dramatically that landscape changes on that journey. The London fog quickly dissipates, replaced by wide open fields and ancient woodland.

The 27-minute journey to Ashford International sped by, and after less than ten minutes in a cab, I arrived at Green Farm: a spectacular Elizabethan structure set on 33 acres of land and ancient woodlands. In the space of 24 hours, and without leaving the property, I dined on fresh wood fire oven pizzas,

had a pond-side hot tub with bats flying overhead, tasted the farm’s own duck eggs and honey, had a pedicure, joined in a morning yoga class in the barn, and went on a ramble.

In 2008 owners Mary-Ann and Martin Richmond-Coggan bought the Grade II listed Kentish Hall House and three acres of land at auction, which was documented on BBC’s Homes under the Hammer. The television programme followed the refurb process. The beams are all the original oak, which they painstakingly removed black paint from as part of a three year makeover. The house was derelict when Martin and Mary-Ann moved in; one man’s job to scratch off individual pieces of leftover black paint took four months.

The 15th century house looks Victorian on the outside but dates back to the 1450s. It was heritage listed as part of a series of “drive-by listings,” Martin said. Originally a Hall, it became a coaching inn from 1870. The couple has bought up more surrounding land as a way to preserve the area and avoid it being developed on. Now they have 33 acres, with 12.5 acres of

ancient woodland, which is over 400 years old and full of oak and ash trees.

The road they’re on leads from Romney marsh and is the main road to Rye, where merchants would historically have sold wool.

Martin is originally from Kent, while Mary-Ann, a Lambeth girl, grew up on South Lambeth Road, and is a landlord for properties in West Dulwich and Peckham. She still travels to Oddono’s on Lordship Lane to buy ice-cream, which she serves at the farm.

The food at Green Farm is simple, fresh and delicious; the duo make their own bread using just five ingredients (water, flour, salt, yeast, and honey).

The ethos is to keep things simple, and as natural as possible, and it extends all the way from farm to table.

When I arrived on a Friday night, a group of kids from Southwark and Hackney were camping on the grounds in a volunteer-led programme, where parents who’ve never taken their children camping are given a safe environment to try it out. Martin and Mary-Ann’s enthusiasm is infectious; there’s constantly people milling about the farm

from the staff in the spa, to the yoga instructor, to volunteers, and neighbours.

The working farm plays host to a series of unique events: Mary-Ann and Martin hold two or three weddings a year, night-time nightingale walks, hen parties, a full-time spa with hot tub, sauna, and beauty services, pond dipping in winter, and weekly barn yoga. On a daily basis their days are spent feeding animals, looking after their three dogs and seven Labrador puppies, doing farm labour, which they share with the couple next door, making bread, growing vegetables, clipping sheep toenails, and any number of other tasks that crop up when you live off the land.

When I ask Mary-Ann if she ever misses living in London she said “the city comes to me.” The wonderful hosts make you feel instantly at home while immersing you completely into farm life. It struck me as surreal that I had spent my working day at a computer in an office, and just hours later I was watching bats soar overhead. I stood in the middle of a field with sheep

bleating all around me, charging for the food trough. I helped feed the hens and ducks. I had a world-class pedicure, and an excellent homemade quinoa salad. And I walked through the beautiful Ashdown Forest that inspired AA Milne’s Hundred Acre Woods. I left feeling recharged and inspired to bring some of the country lifestyle back to the city. I’ve started buying duck eggs. For everything else, you need to visit Green Farm.

Searching for a sense of place Final Print presents a spectacular photography exhibition show at Mycenae House. The new show is themed around ‘a sense of place’ and is on display until the end of October, writes Laura Burgoine...

Final Print is a group of inspired, artistic, multinational photographers; founded in 2010 the group membership has evolved to seven members with varied flair, expertise and maturity. They have exhibited at several venues around Greenwich and are presenting their latest showcase at the renowned Mycenae House near the Blackheath Royal Standard.

Their main aim is to produce quality black and white prints, produced from negatives processed and printed at their independent dark room at Greenwich, which opened in March.

Previously they were a mature student collective at the Greenwich Community College. However, they do not just work with the analogue processes of film photography; they put their hands to modern day digital photography too. The film printing is derived from different formats such as 35mm and medium format. The

majority of black and white film shots are hand printed silver gelatin prints.

A Sense of Place is a unique interpretation of what this means to each individual member. Several

amazing pieces have been created using film and digital photography.

I never really enjoyed Frankenstein, the book by Mary Shelley; I struggled with the character of Dr Frankenstein, finding him a bit wet, writes Matt Baker...

So I was interested to see if this intriguing working of the classic horror would change my mind. This version by Ross McGregor has the novel feature of intertwining the story of Mary Shelley's herself in to the play, in parallel with the original narrative. And I must say that it worked excellently.

Sharing the world of the author, and her trials and tribulations, made me feel more attached to the characters in the original piece. The direction needed to balance the different narratives in the play was outstanding and showed real quality from Ross McGregor. Despite so much going on it never felt lost or overwhelmed.

The depiction of the monster was spot on and didn't in anyway descend in to cliché, whilst at the same time keeping a marvelous gothic touch. There was, too, a nice equilibrium between pathos and menace that gave real depth to the performance. As the play closed with its tragic end the audience gave generous applause and there was a real sense of appreciation for a great night. Definitely worth a trip down to Brockley for.

Austen powers A

one-woman musical that lovingly sends up all things Jane Austen is coming to Greenwich Theatre for three nights only.

New Zealand writer Penny Ashton brings Austenesque characters to life in Promise and Promiscuity through song, dance, outrageous cross-stitching and a ukulele love serenade.

“I believe her dialogue and characters are the best things about her work,” Penny said. “From fussy mothers to silly sisters to sensible heroines to malodorous suitors and downright evil dowagers. She has some withering one-line zingers and some delightfully sarcastic ripostes.

I play nine characters in this piece and love jumping between their exaggerated selves.”

Beating 1000 entrants to win an Adelaide Fringe theatre prize, the show was inspired in 2008 when a friend asked Penny to bring a show to a festival of improvisation. “I got together a group and we presented Austen Found: The Undiscovered Musicals of Jane Austen,” said Penny. “This went hugely well and was a lot of fun, but touring with five people was a little tricky on the purse strings so I condensed down a lot of the jokes we had improvised over the years into a solo musical show.”

“I also know not everyone knows about Austen so I injected a lot of pop culture references. The music was then all arranged and written by the fabulous Robbie Ellis, who conducted live musicians in the recording and presented me with

fabulous tracks.”

Penny has always been a big fan of what she calls “bonnet drama” and particularly loves Austen’s works brought to life. “One of my best cinematic experiences was when I was pulling pints in Soho at age 24.

I had the afternoon off so I paid a small fortune for an Empire Theatre ticket to see Sense and Sensibility.

“I loved every minute of it. I swooned, I gasped, and I whooped and cried along with Emma

Thompson, in the most decorous fashion, of course. I am a huge fan of Austen herself, she fought to be published for so long, then died only five years later. I would love her to come back and see what she has delivered the world, as she had no idea of the profound effects her sparkling wit would have.”

plot lost some momentum and pace for me around the middle of the first half; finding some of the slower musical numbers somewhat forgettable. That’s not to say the production as a whole isn’t enjoyable, there is a lot to like here. The tunes with the whole company pop with precise choreography and vocal performances from all, as well as the almost vaudevillian caricatures spattered through the show. Lucky Stiff is also very funny on the whole, producing some well earned laughs.

Porter respectively are the stand outs. Both are outrageous, both are hilarious. The characters are chalk and cheese and are performed to such extreme, garish levels that the giggling amongst the audience becomes infectious. In all a daft, lighthearted production, just in time to combat those encroaching dark wintry nights.

Horn Fair returns A fair which dates back to the eighteenth century is being held at Charlton House on Sunday, October 15.

The Horn Fair became a carnival 200 years ago and was known as one of the bawdiest in England – but it dates back even further. Legend has it that King John committed an ‘indiscretion’ with a miller’s wife in Charlton. The miller attacked him, not knowing who he was, but he then begged for forgiveness once he realised. The king granted him land from his mill to Cuckold’s Point in Rotherhithe on condition that he forgave his wife and visited the point on the anniversary of the day, wearing a pair of horns.

Now the fair is more family-friendly, where visitors can experience historic times in Charlton House’s Georgian Tea Rooms, join in powdered wig workshops, get their face painted Georgian-style, join in music lessons, sample treats from the food market – and even enjoy some balloon entertainment. For the grown-ups there will also be gin and beer on sale.

Follow the plastic brick road

egoland is a place that takes on mythic proportions in many young minds.

Waiting at the school gates at the start of each new term, you hear a lot of talk of how other parents have been spending the holidays making the most of their Merlin passes there.

I’d been to a few of the Merlin attractions in and around London, like the Aquarium on South Bank and Chessington World of Adventures, but hadn’t yet ventured to Windsor.

So I decided that the time had come to ignore the talk of long queues and follow the plastic brick road. Within 10 minutes I was asking myself why I hadn’t gone sooner. It’s fantastic!

OK, so there can be long queues to get on the rides, but that’s where a bit of pre-visit research (and advice form Legoland old-hands) come in.

As soon as we entered the park we picked up some Q-Bots, a little electronic device like an old-school beeper, or for the more modern parents it can be downloaded as an app, which lets you pre-book your ride – and you just turn up at your allotted time without having to queue.

There are different types of Q-Bot you can buy, costing £20, £35 and £80 per person, offering different levels of access. And this is my first piece of advice I received and feel it my duty to pass one – buy a Q-Bot, it will transform your visit. While other people were queueing, we were exploring the park.

And there’s lots to explore, probably too much to do in one day. Legoland is huge. We were a bit bewildered about what to do first when we got there.

And here is my second piece of Legoland wisdom that was handed down to me – go to the back of the park first and work your way forward, going against the crowds.

Now I went with my 5 year olds, who at most theme parks may be a bit too small for the rides, but in Legoland they were tall enough for almost all of them. And the rides aren’t all sedate. Most I went on felt extreme enough for my tender sensibilities!

Legoland is split into theme land; there’s Land of the Vikings, which has a great River Splash ride; though the Pirate Falls Treasure Quest in Pirate Shores got as much more soaked! In fact Pirate Shores was one of

our favourite areas. The Quest ride was great, one of the best in the park, and there’s also a Pirate Goldwash, where you can sift for little pieces of ‘gold’ in a gold panning area. My two loved this; Adventureland was another of the favourites, especially the submarine ride where you can view (real) mantarays, sharks and fish, as well as Lego ones, on a journey to the deep.

Duplo Valley is a place to visit on a warmer day with plenty of opportunity to get soaked through at the Splash Safari and Drench Towers; the Dragon ride in the NEXO Knight Kingdom is a fast one to watch out for.

Legoland’s most recent addition is the Ninjago World (you may have noticed if you watch children’s TV that they have a new movie coming out!), and this is home to one of the best rides. Ninjago the ride is a 3D experience, where, you the Lego ninja, can shoot fire and ice from your hands at the baddies (skeletons and giant snakes included), from your seat. I’ve never thought much of any 3D movie that I’ve been to, but the Ninjago ride really did immerse you into it. It’s a great ride, and you get points, so you can see who scored the most on your way out.

There’s so much at Legoland that I’d recommend you get there early and try to spend more than one day there, if your budget will allow. It’s by far the best theme park I’ve been to.

And the park’s attractions they keep on building - Legoland is getting spooky for Halloween.

Visit between Saturday, October 14 and Monday, October 30, and you can enjoy Brick or Treat, where you can join in the Skeleton Big Build, create a Duplo pumpkin, meet Frankie the friendly monster, Lord Vampyre and Orange Brick. www.legoland.co.uk

hen you lunch on English Heritage land you should expect proper English fare, so there were no surprises when me and Mum went to Eltham Palace where the former greenhouse has been converted into a bright cafeteria that serves food to complement all that is good about our green and pleasant land.

Set in the Palace grounds, it has a picnic area, safe play for children, and seating outside for those who want to enjoy this bout of clement weather at close quarters. Inside, surrounded by glass, it is a little quieter, where we sat after being warmly greeted

by Jan who talked us through the menu and offered up a couple of good recommendations.

As I supped my Whitstable Ale, Mum, between sips of her Sauvignon Blanc from a local vineyard, told me about her recent holiday. It basically boiled down to she’s never going to Malta again.

Still feeling a bit jet lagged she didn’t want a starter but I had the Homemade pea and mint soup, a tasty bowl of goodness that came with a nice roll and butter.

that produces feelings of patriotism: Cheddar, chutney, ham, egg, cucumber, bacon, and brie.

What? Brie! I’m guessing the brie was from an English cheesemaker.

Mum went for the Hunters chicken, a plump breast wrapped in bacon and cheese, with homemade potato wedges and green beans. It looked delicious.

Mum’s feedback was, “I don’t usually like chicken breast but I liked that.” And that is as good as a five star rating off my mother.

My homemade cottage pie was spot on. It made me proud to be English. The top was crispy and golden, the mash was good, and they don’t scrimp on the meat filling. Mum offloaded a couple of potato wedges to me and they were good too.

As we finished off our drinks I was bringing Mum up to speed on my recent Ryanair flight cancellation that looked like leaving me stranded somewhere in Italy, when Jan came and suggested we try

the cakes. “Are they homemade?” asked Mum. “Most of them are,” she told us. “And Abigail’s Bread Pudding is really good.”

So we finished off with a piece of Abigail’s bread pudding. And, as it was the size of a small house brick, we shared.

Eltham Palace is a joy to visit and we will be going back soon.

It’s open from 10am - 5pm six days a week (closed Saturdays) with hot lunches served until 3pm.
