ROLL OUT THE BARREL

How one man left his job in the City to start a micropub After an impromptu visit to a micropub in Kent, money broker Michael Wren decided that his hometown could benefit from a similar establishment.

Mike was born and raised in Eltham and after attending school locally worked in Barclays Bank in Greenwich before establishing a career as a money broker in the city.

But a visit to Kent in 2013 gave Mike a new vocation. “I didn’t know what a micropub was. I’d heard of a micro brewery, but most of them were a bit too modern and not my type of thing.” Mike explained, “I walked through the door and literally had an epiphany.

I knew this was what I wanted to do.”

And despite an abundance of pubs in the town centre, the wannabe landlord noticed that the densely populated area around Eltham Park was short of a

watering hole. “I just thought this is what Eltham Park needs.”

Realising his vision to create a micropub in Eltham wasn’t all plain sailing however, as Mike had just started a five year contract at a new money broking firm in the city, which he was luckily able to be released from. He also initially faced a bit of objection from his spouse. “My wife said, ‘You’re not giving up a job to go and do something on a whim.’ but I won her around in the end.”

There was also the issue of finding the right premises, but that problem was quickly solved when a plumbing merchants on Westmount Road became available, a shop with enough space to make a comfortable community meeting house. “I spoke to the landlord and he said yeah, it’s yours.”

Planning permission to change the establishment from a retail unit to a pub also had to be undertaken and Mike took on the task with real diligence, ensuring the local community was part of the communication process from the very beginning.

“What I really wanted to do was to create something for the community; having lived here all this time and never having had anywhere to meet and socialise unless you went to the church. That’s what I wanted to do.” Mike explained, “We’ve been very lucky.

We’ve had really

great support from the locals.”

The council eventually granted the planning permission and then the hard work really began in transforming a derelict shop into a salubrious drinking establishment called The Long Pond.

“The team got working and we opened on December 15 2014, so it had taken 18 months since I first had the idea.”

And the pub has gone from strength to strength ever since, with a focus on creating a warm relaxed atmosphere where good beer and wine can be enjoyed.

The pub doesn’t serve spirits, lager or cocktails and there are no noisy big screen TVs or amplified music systems. Once a month local groups are invited to play and with a piano proudly positioned in the bar area, there are also piano nights as well as a hugely popular Christmas carol evening. “We’re all about good quality products and a nice atmosphere.”

And since gaining a place in the

Good Beer Guide people from all over the country have flocked to experience The Long Pond for themselves.

“We serve real ale, cask condition ale. The majority of our beers come from breweries in Kent - small independent breweries, we don’t use the big ones and we do get a few guest beers from the rest of the country. Kent is the heartland of hops, which go into real ale so it’s all natural products served from the cask. The white and rosé wine we use comes from Chapel Down Winery down in Tenterden in Kent, a really successful vineyard, which has gone from strength to strength in the last 10 years. We have locally produced cider from Kent as well.

We do a little bit of food, no hot food, but we do ploughman’s and pork pies. Even our cheese comes from Canterbury and our crisps are also from Kent.”

And the products and ambience have proved to be a successful

formula. The Long Pond gained the honour earlier this year of winning the CAMRA South East London 2017 Pub of the Year award. It’s a family affair too with Mike’s brother - who just happens to be a wine merchant - sorting out the red wine and Prosecco for the pub and Mike’s wife and motherin-law usually found helping out at the weekends.

And if you find yourself at a loss on a particular big day in December, you can join the family for a drink too. “We’re open every day and we’re even open on Christmas day. Christmas day has got bigger and bigger and I think local people around here have got used to the idea of putting the meat in the oven and coming around the corner for a drink.”

Cockfight is born out of a very real relationship between performers Joshua Thomson (33 years old) and Gavin Webber (50 years old). Thomson joined Webber at Dancenorth in Australia in 2005 and they have continued to work together ever since.

Their relationship has developed over the years, and these shifts in their shared physical and performance history are evident in the trust and danger of Cockfight’s choreographic language.

Porridge again!

T

he BBC, whatever you think of it, is an institution. Just about every great TV moment has been on the BBC, whether that is Kenneth Wolstenholme telling the nation, ‘They think it’s all over’, Neil Armstrong stepping on to the moon, Basil Fawlty trying not to mention the war, or anything

by David Attenborough, and throughout its years of broadcasting the BBC has always produced groundbreaking comedy.

In 2016 it commissioned pilots of some of its classic sitcoms to gauge whether the current generation of viewers were up for them, and one of the standout one-offs was a new episode of Porridge, more than 40 years after it was first broadcast. The warm reviews it attracted convinced the BBC that a full series was warranted, so the writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, now octogenarians, wrote six new episodes.

Kevin Bishop plays Nigel Norman Fletcher, grandson of the Ronnie Barker character, and it was this multi-talented actor that I was watching in rehearsals as he and an excellent supporting cast brought out the magic in the writers’ script by tweaking, adding and deleting along with the director and producer in a warehouse beneath the Westway.

South east Londoner Bishop first graced our screens as Sam Spalding in Grange Hill until he was expelled, and then was one of the stars in the film Muppet Treasure Island. Since then he has been on TV at regular intervals in an eclectic assortment of series and shows, some he has written himself and others that had him nominated for awards.

For the final rehearsal piece of the day, ‘Fletch’ had to talk himself out of a tricky situation with a female prison officer who had found a contraband cake in his cell. With minor amendments and a change of inflection on certain words, the scene came good.

and is a delight to interview. Being a natural comic helps.

He had me in stitches whenever he dropped into a character for an anecdote he was telling, doing a Fletch voice to demonstrate a tongue-twisting line he struggles with, and even at one point in the interview impersonating Tracey Ullman taking off Ian McShane!

Though the best impression was when he told me of a show he has written called Father-in-Law, which is about his real father-in-law, who he will be playing in the show. As he took off his wife’s dad I could tell straightaway that this will be another very funny show from Kevin Bishop.

Two shows to look out for.

Porridge starts on BBC1 on October 6 at 8.30pm

leaving me to talk to the man who has a soft spot for the Weekender.

First of all he brought me up to speed with a film he is in that has just gone on release in Australia called A Few Less Men, the sequel to cult film A Few Best Men, which he hopes will be in UK cinemas this year.

The master mimic, whose many impressions in the series Star Stories are legendary, spoke of people he has parodied and how they were quite happy for him to impersonate them, before recapping on the brilliant spoof, Nigel Farage Gets His Life Back. With blue eyes that glint mischievously at all times, he recalled the tale of Farage’s people trying to arrange a lunch date with him, but this was before the programme had gone out so the invitation was declined: ‘I was reluctant from a legal standpoint,’ begins the actor. ‘I didn’t want to give anything away or have them shut it down before it even got on the telly.’

After the show was broadcast

Farage sent word that ‘he liked the portrayal but not the script’. Cue knowing laughter. ‘But he still wants to take me out for lunch!’ More laughing.

We drifted off into politics so I veered him back to comedy.

Within the blink of an eye he was off into what ingredients you need for a successful British sitcom: ‘The central character needs to be trapped,’ he stresses, before supporting his statement with a list of sitcom lead characters trapped in the situation they are trying to get out of that drives the show. This segued perfectly into Porridge, ‘the perfect premise for a comedy He’s incarcerated.’

And Kevin Bishop is perfect for the world of entertainment.

He is sociable, amiable to all and extremely praising of people he has worked with, saying only nice things about Tracey Ullman, Harry Enfield, and the Porridge writers (‘Some of the gags in this are classic, classic Porridge’). He is all over Twitter with his admiration of the live audiences at the show’s recordings, yet refuses to name names of

those he feels are not worthy of the fame they have achieved. He was even gracious enough to find a positive in Farage and the commitment he has to his political beliefs.

From Lion King to Five Guys I

driss Kargbo really has had a life on the stage.

From playing young Simba in Lion King at an early age, the performer has hardly been away from the West End and with other credits including Thriller Live and Oliver! under his belt - even before he had left school - a career in musical theatre seemed almost inevitable.

Idriss – who is from Dartford joined the 10th anniversary cast of Wicked last year to portray the Munchkin Boq. Being cast in the show, which is one of the biggest musicals in the world was a dream come true for the actor, who told me, “It was incredible. It was honestly one of the highlights of my career so far. I absolutely loved it. The 10th anniversary was such a landmark year for the show, so it was incredible being a part of that”.

But the young star’s career has come full circle this year with his latest role in the revival of Five Guys Named Moe. Idriss’ first appearance on stage as a youngster was at the Theatre Royal Stratford East and a commemorative photograph displayed at the venue always captivated him.

“I remember as a child, there was this iconic picture on the wall by the dress circle foyer.

It was of these five black men in white tuxedos doing this pose. I remember the picture being so resonant in my mind; seeing five beautiful black strong men standing on stage seemed quite odd.”

The photograph was of the original cast of the Louis Jordan musical Five Guys Named Moe, which is now being revived at a brand new pop up Theatre in Marble Arch.

The Olivier Award Winning show with a book by Clarke Peters - was

first staged at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in 1990 and went on to enjoy a hugely successful four-year run in the West End at the Lyric Theatre as well as a stint on Broadway. It was revived in 2010 and is now to be staged in a new venue, which has been purpose built for the occasion by Underbelly Productions (best known for their summer festival on the South Bank).

The musical is based on a short story, which Louis Jordan wrote in 1943.

“It’s about Nomax and his journey of recovery. He’s just broken up

with his long-term girlfriend and he resorts to alcohol and is in a bad place.” Idriss explains, “The Five Guys are partly in his head and on the radio. They take him on a journey so he can learn from them and get to a place where he can be in a healthier relationship and also healthier in himself.”

Louis Jordan was a swing legend, who was known as ‘The King of the Jukebox’ and had a phenomenally successful career; working with the likes of Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Some of his

biggest hits including “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Cryin”, “Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby” and “Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens” appear in the musical adaptation.

Idriss said: “We’re entering the world of jazz, 1940s era with Louis Jordan and all those cool cats, so it’s really cool to be a part of that generation of music.”

Remembering south London of old Beryl Kingston is a veteran of fiction writing, having penned sagas, historical and contemporary fiction for the last thirty years, and sold over a million copies of her most popular title.

Born in Tooting in 1931, Beryl grew up south of the river and studied English at King’s College London. She remembers Tooting during the Blitz, before she was evacuated to Felpham in Sussex followed by Harpenden in Hertfordshire, having to enrol in ten different schools in that time.

She returned to London at the end of the war. Now living in Sussex permanently, Beryl has written a homage to the South London of old, in her latest book Everybody’s Somebody, which was published

by Endeavour Ink in September.

Did you have to delve into much research for the time period, Beryl?

I always research everything I write, usually on my feet by visiting the places I'm going to use as settings and talking to the locals, and from contemporary documents. I picked the Borough because I found and loved the Market when I was seventeen, and

because there was a great Music Hall in Tooley Street called The Star and known locally as the LaDi-Da. I explored the place with a local man called Ken Titmuss who uses old maps to guide us and is known as Oldmapman.

My chief source of information about life in the trenches came from a relation who'd spent four years there. I used to sit at his feet and listen and afterwards write it all up in my diary, which I kept from the time I was seven until I was well into my twenties. I also had an aunt who had been a suffragette and she told me a lot about that.

What are the major changes that you’ve seen to this part of London over the years?

Major changes. The most noticeable is the amount of new building - The Shard being a prime example. There was a lot of damage to the Borough during the Blitz (which I'm writing about now), and lots of the houses were slums, like the two rooms Jim and his sister rent in Parish Street. There

was a lot of slum clearance after the war. The original houses are hard to find now and there are lots of expensive penthouses and flats.

One thing that hasn't changed are the people and their cheerful resilience. South Londoners were a mixed bunch when I was a child there, comprising of many nationalities: Italian, like my grandfather, German, French, Jewish as well as the indigenous English, and that makes for a lively and colourful interplay at street level. Visit Borough Market today and it's still there. Different nationalities, the same friendly, joke-

cracking, mutually helpful, volatile mix. The way locals rushed to the aid of the people attacked on London Bridge and in the Borough Market is admirable proof of that.

the relentless blood bath of WW1 and the bone-headed ignorance of the generals who didn't know how to stop it. So many men were massacred that it was soon obvious that women would have to do the jobs they were no longer there to do. So they drove trams, cleaned windows, worked in munitions, delivered coal, milk and bread - even worked as riveters.

Working class women had always worked hard, but until then most of them were badly paid skivvies, who did the donkey work in the house. The change meant that they could earn better wages; better wages meant that they could be more independent.

The Great British Fry Off

I

’ve heard tales that the nation’s favourite dish is Chicken Tikka Masala but I have never believed a word of it. One, because it was a dish made up in some backstreet balti in Birmingham and no self-respecting Indian would be seen dead eating it, and two, because we love fish and chips, it is part of our growing up. I’ve never seen an American tourist asking the way to an ‘authentic British Chicken Tikka Masala’, tourists want to try fish and chips and having it is always on their to-do list.

So it was with great delight that Kay and I took ourselves off to Brockley’s Rock, the award-winning fish and chip shop for lunch. Delighted because I constantly see customers queueing out the door here.

We found ourselves a nice table where we could watch the pageantry of chip shop lunch - the standing and staring at the menu on the wall while waiting in line, the licking of the

lips when your turn comes to place your order, then the rush to open the wrapped food as soon as you get outside. While enjoying this very British spectacle we perused the menu.

Kay ordered a Pepsi (‘Better than Coke,’ she swears) while Kyri, the owner, came over and told us what was exceptionally fresh that day, while also suggesting the Seafood Platter for two for us to begin with.

Going with Kyri’s recommendations we had the Seafood Platter and it was a delectable treat that included: calamari, whitebait, prawns, scampi, fishcake all nicely accompanied with chargrilled baby sweetcorn, mange tout, salad and dips. Kay doesn’t like calamari or whitebait (‘You can see their eyes’), so I had a right result on that course.

In a quiet spell Kyri was telling us about his plans for the future and how Brockley had changed in recent years, and how his son left the fish shop game to be a Web Developer, and how they had got into the top 60 of the UK Fish and Chip Shop

League and in the top 6 in the London and the South East section, along with Olley’s of Herne Hill, then the lunchtime rush kicked in again and he was off frying and serving at the takeaway counter. You don’t get that high in the charts without putting the hard work in!

Our dinners came. Kay disappeared behind a mountain of chips but I could just hear her telling me how light and crispy the batter was, and something about ‘lovely cod’. I looked at my huge piece of haddock and gave it a couple of prods with the fork to make sure the big beast was dead and not about to take a chunk out of my hand. It was. It was safe to go in, and I had to agree with everything Kay said.

It was excellent fish and chips, which explained all the awards and all the customers.

To my lasting shame I could not eat it all, but I had a good go. I think it was having the starter that done me in. But then again it could have been the buttered roll and the exceptionally fat wolly that I had

with my main course. Plus, the fish was the size of Jaws!

Never liking to be beaten by a meal, I’ll be back as I saw Hake on the menu and fancy trying that next time.

Planning ahead for a funeral The rising cost of funerals and burials mean it’s important to plan ahead.

Insia Ishtiaq from Kemnal Park cemetery and memorial garden talks the Weekender through the process of planning for the end.

“Space around London is becoming rare,” Insia said. “If you do your research you’ll see that the cost of funerals has gone up significantly over the last 15-20 years. You can pre-purchase your plot. It’s ideal that families do pre-purchase because it saves costs and the uncertainty for remaining family who face the burden of a sudden huge cost.”

Kemnal Park has a variety of choices for cremated remains or full burial options, and both can be pre-purchased. “Cremation is becoming more and more popular.

Partly because people believe in cremation more than burial, but partly it’s to do with cost; it’s much cheaper,” Insia said.

Private gardens are usually the choices for families. “In our experience, whether they’re choosing full burial or cremation,

families prefer to be together if they can. Based on that we have private gardens. Or we can allocate burial plots adjacent to each other,” she continued. “A unique feature of the Park is the family gardens that we offer, which families can plan for generations.”

The “whole idea of funerals has changed,” Insia said. “It used to be

about mourning for the deceased, but now it’s about celebrating their life. The dress code has changed a lot. It’s no more a black and white thing.” Often the funeral is themed around the deceased person’s favourite colour, a

lifestyle, the football club they supported or their profession.

“We’ve had colour themed funerals. We’ve had many pink and purple funerals where everyone wears something purple, the coffin can be themed around

that colour, we dress the service hall in the same colour,” she said.

“We have had London buses services where they arrive in double decker buses. We’ve

Can writing a Will save my family money?

utumn is now upon us – the children have gone back to school, the nights are drawing in and the temperature is dropping.

Lots of people find it is a good time to consult their ‘to-do’ lists and turn their attention to matters which were easy to postpone during the Summer months.

Something which people all too often do not ‘get around to’ is making a Will and reviewing their affairs. It is believed that over half of the UK adult population do not have a Will. If someone dies without a Will, the intestacy rules are applied to their estate, which dictate who the beneficiaries are. The intestacy rules do not include

unmarried partners, stepchildren, or friends, meaning that the people you wish to benefit may not receive any of your hard-earned wealth. The rules also create statutory trusts which you may not be happy with and can cause inheritance tax issues.

A well drafted Will can help to ensure your estate is administered in accordance with your wishes and makes use of the inheritance tax allowances which your estate can benefit from.

Currently, each estate has an inheritance tax free allowance, known as a nil rate band, of £325,000 and this can be transferred in full between married couples and civil partners, provided certain conditions are met.

This means that couples can

have a transferable nil rate band of £650,000 between them.

In April this year, the Government also introduced an additional inheritance tax

free allowance, known as the residence nil rate band.

It is currently £100,000 and will increase each tax year by £25,000, until it reaches £175,000 in 2020. To qualify

for the residence nil rate band, several conditions need to be met, including that there is a residential property in the estate, which the deceased lived in during their lifetime.

The deceased’s estate also needs to have been left to lineal descendants outright i.e. children, grandchildren or step-children.

At Kemnal Park they provide music and AV service. “People have a choice of music. It’s gone from hymns to more about songs, which range from basketball theme songs to Peter Pan to Jingle Bells.”

London’s diverse population means diverse funerals. “London is the most cosmopolitan city, that’s one of the reasons we see so many types of funerals,” Insia said. “African Caribbean services are totally different. They literally go out of their way making the same dresses like for bridesmaids.

You have ladies all in the same headgear and dresses, with brass bands. We’ve had Irish funerals with Morris dancers, Pearly king and queen funerals,” she continued.

In recent years private companies are investing in the sector. “Private companies are

supporting the industry because the councils are running out of land,” Insia said. “It’s about finding the space, funding it, and all the financial and human resources.

We are facing cuts everywhere.”

Kemnal Park has been running

for five years; it was previously park land. “We are operating on 11 acres of land. In October, we’re expanding onto a further 16 acres. The total amount of land is 55 acres, including parkland, and woodland, and in our next phase

we will be going into our ancient woodland,” Insia said.

“Currently we don’t provide funeral plans. What people can do is pay for their memorial (cremated remains or full burial plot) and if they want to do a funeral plan,

they can do it with different providers.”

Another unique option Kemnal Park offers is a web streaming service. “So people who can’t make it to the funeral can actually stream it. We don’t record it due to data protection. It’s very secure, and widely used,” Insia said.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out new service connections.

2. The Order will come into operation on 07th October 2017 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take two weeks with works only taking place at weekends on the 7th-8th October and the 14th-15th October. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) from Nelson Road bearing Left into Greenwich Church Street.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Greenwich Church Street, Creek Road, Norman Road, Greenwich High Road and Greenwich Church Street.

Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

Public Announcement The Local Government Ombudsman has issued a report following his investigation of a complaint against the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The complaint was about an Education & Children’s Services matter. The Ombudsman found there had been fault on the part of the Council, and this had caused injustice to the complainant.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has agreed to take action which the Ombudsman regards as providing a satisfactory remedy for the complaint. As a result, the complainant’s injustice has been remedied.

The Council must now consider the report and tell the Ombudsman within three months what it proposes to do.
