Turkish pop star who's a real dish S

ezar Ugur Soy is no one trick pony. The Turkish pop star is a male beauty pageant winner, model, actor, and music producer with five studio albums under his belt. People in Honor Oak are probably more familiar with the Turkish delights he dishes up at his new restaurant Hattush.

Opened one and a half years ago, the restaurant already has a celebrity following, with patrons including local Game of Thrones star Murray McArthur, football players from Crystal Palace and Arsenal, and actor Andrew Scott (from BBC’s Sherlock, currently playing Hamlet at the Harold Pinter theatre).

“People travel from west London. They come from all over,” Sezar told the Weekender, over Turkish tea and three courses of a lavish lunch.

Sezar spent 27 years living in Istanbul, and had a long career in the music biz as a songwriter, voice coach, and producer. He also handled artists’ careers, styling their images, and video clips from his studio Metropolis in Istanbul. The performer dabbled in acting, back in Turkey, mostly in theatre, as well as

modelling on the catwalk for high profile clients including Tommy Hilfiger.

It was winning the Mr Mediterranean Handsome Man contest that catapulted his career.

“In 1998, I was trying to make my first album and running my own bar when my Mum called and said she and my Dad were going to lose the family house in Cyprus,” he said. “The prize money for Mr Mediterranean Handsome man was $20,000.” He embarked on the intensive 15-day camp, competing in categories like the shorts section, and a beauty pageant. “It was either lose my business and my parents’ home, or win and save both,” he said.

Crowned the winner, this proved a turning point in Sezar’s life. “$20,000 was a lot of money back then. I bought a car. A hatchback!

And I sold my bar, and music became my life,” he said.

His first album sold 600,000 copies, the second 750,000.

The singer has sold nearly eight millions copies of his albums globally and won Best Voice in 2009 and Best Songwriter in Turkey’s version of MTV, Kral TV. “I travelled all over Europe: Germany, Romania, Russia,” he said.

He moved to London to learn English. “I needed to sing in English. I was already singing in Spanish, French, and Greek,” he said.

It was while performing at a concert in Cyprus that he met his wife, who’s from Honor Oak. They were engaged within weeks, and are married now with a fiveyear-old son. The inspiration for the restaurant came from them.

“I thought what can I do for my family? It must also go with my music. So I opened a restaurant

where I can also sing,” Sezar said.

During his early days in London Sezar worked at upmarket Turkish restaurant Sofra, near Bond Street, and wasn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty. “I worked in top Turkish restaurants. I was at Sofra for seven months. I was kitchen manager, and I did every job I could. I washed dishes for two weeks. If I’m going to be a boss I need to feel how everyone else does, and know what their job involves,” he said.

Hattush has already fed 9000 happy customers, and plans for expansion include converting the basement into a movie theatre and screening classic films on Sundays. The décor is complete with statement pieces from Turkey, and the booths in the restaurant are a present from celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.

“He’s not like on TV really,” Sezar says. “He’s very handsome, and sensitive. A quality guy.”

He could be American actor and filmmaker Liev Schreiber’s doppelganger. “I had a customer in here who was writing an email to Naomi Watts [Schreiber’s former wife] and she said she’s going to send Lieb to my restaurant,” he laughed.

The music is still Sezar’s main drive. He’s releasing a new compilation album with 33 songs in one package, and three new songs. “I want to introduce my songs to the whole world,” he said. “I want people to know that one day, one person was living for this. I have a lot of fans but I’m not a big pop star in Turkey.”

Dark Chapter of a Vauxhall author Vauxhall author Winnie M Li is aiming to raise awareness about sexual assault with a crime novel inspired by her own rape.

Dark Chapter, which comes out on June 1, follows a Taiwanese American tourist who is sexually assaulted by a teenager in West Belfast. “The book is a work of fiction, inspired by what happened to me,” the New Jersey native said.

“I want to reserve a bit of privacy but quite a lot of my own experience is in the book. The assault itself, and the way it’s presented in the book, is not any worse or more severe than what happened in real life.”

The Harvard graduate, who also has a Masters from Goldsmiths University, has lived in Vauxhall since 2003 and was working as a film producer at the time of her assault in 2008. Winnie flew back to London the day after her attack in Ireland to attend the Leicester

Square premiere of a film she worked on. “I kind of knew a few weeks after the assault that I wanted to write a book,” she said. “I sat down and wrote the prologue in a weird post traumatic haze.”

But it took five years of recovery before Winnie could start writing the rest of it, in late 2013. “A lot of rape survivors from colleges in the US started coming out about their experiences, and there were a lot of other women sharing their stories.

I blogged for the Huffington Post, I went back to Belfast to research for my novel, and eventually I became an activist,” she said.

In 2015, Winnie and a group of volunteers launched Clear Lines: the UK’s first ever festival addressing sexual assault and consent. It was held over four days in Southwark with 500 people attending. “It was empowering to have that space, and celebrate our creativity as survivors and artists,” she said. “There’s a

community of people out there who want to, and need to, talk about these issues.”

The writer describes seeing her first book in print as “surreal.”

“Hopefully it’ll raise awareness about the issue a bit more, and the personal reasons I wrote it,” she said. “As an activist, I wanted to start conversations about this topic, and create a scenario where readers could understand that.”

Dark Chapter doesn’t just focus on assault, but rather the recovery process.

“I’ve had almost a decade of recovery,” Winnie said. “The recovery period and the whole legal process that victims have to go through lasts years.”

Saul David on his painstakingly researched account of Dunkirk

As Christopher Nolan’s latest film Dunkirk hits theatres, Saul David has just released a painstakingly researched account of the fallout of Dunkirk with south London publisher Endeavour Press.

In After Dunkirk, the Bathbased British academic historian and broadcaster foregrounds the overlooked 51st Highland Division, left behind on the French shores long after the epic rescue operation depicted in the recent cinematic epic. We spoke to him about the methods and motivation behind his latest work

Many people will be familiar with the Dunkirk evacuations.

But crucially your book covers what happened afterwards. Can you sum up the events in the book for us?

"It concentrates on the dramatic story of the famous 51st (Highland) Division, an elite Scottish formation that was serving in the Maginot Line when the Germans broke through the French lines and cut off the rest of the BEF and the best French armies in Belgium in May 1940.

The Highland Division fought on after Dunkirk - as did thousands of other British troops - in a series of defensive battles in northern France and was eventually forced to surrender to General Erwin Rommel’s 7th Panzer Division at the little Norman seaport of St Valery on 12 June 1940. More than 1,000 Highlanders were killed; a further 10,000 spent five years in German POW camps."

Some of the accounts are vividly recreated with specific weapons, injuries sustained

etc. Can you tell us a little more about how you researched the book?

"I wanted the story to be told in the words of those who were there, and eventually tracked down and interviewed more than a hundred former members of the Highland Division from across the UK. I also gathered scores of diaries, letters, memoirs and official documents so that I could chart, for the first time, the dramatic and tragic story of this doomed division. I began the research when I was 25, and the book was originally published three years later. The look on the face of some of the veterans when a young fresh-faced ‘historian’ appeared on their doorstep - they were clearly expecting someone much older - was a sight to behold."

Can you say something about Churchill and the political situation with regards to the book?

"I hugely admire Churchill. Only he could have got Briton out of the hole it found itself in in late May 1940, a time when many of his Cabinet colleagues wanted to sue for peace. But his willingness

to sacrifice the Highland Division for political ends was not his finest hour. He insisted that the Highlanders remained in France after Dunkirk in the hope that they would encourage the French to fight on. This, however, was only justifiable if there had ever been a realistic chance of keeping France in the war. In my view there was not. Most of the signals Churchill was getting from the French political and military leaders at this time were to the effect that defeat was inevitable and it would be followed by an armistice. One Highland officer wrote: ‘It has always been abundantly clear to me that no Division has ever been more uselessly sacrificed. It could have been got away a good week before but the powers that be… had come to the conclusion that there was a capacity for resistance in France which was not actually there.'"

What did you think of the recent Christopher Nolan film

about Dunkirk? And what's your next project?

"I loved the film. What it lacked in narrative coherence it more than made up for as a visceral cinematic experience. You really felt you were back in 1940: in the seat of a fighter plane, the wheelhouse of a small boat and on the shell-torn beaches of Dunkirk. It took a few liberties with the historical record, but what feature film doesn’t?

Talking of films, I’m very excited about my next project: the story of a top-secret unit of US/Canadian commandos who are given mission impossible in the mountains of Italy and pull it off. The working title is: The Force. I’m off to the US to begin my research tomorrow. It should be in the bookshops (and hopefully on the silver screen) in 2019."

Tutu cool for school

Clapham's Russian ballet dancers to put on West End show for youngsters

lapham’s London Russian Ballet School (LRBS) has joined forces with the world famous Bolshoi Ballet to stage a special performance at the London Palladium, enabling 800 children from Lambeth and surrounding areas to visit a theatre for the first time.

Leading Bolshoi dancers, including Ekaterina Krysanova, Semyon Chudin, Maria Alexandrova and Vladislav Lantratov, are participating in an outstanding programme with Clapham’s LRBS students that includes the premiere of a new work and the spectacular classic Don Quixote.

LRBS director Harriet Pickering said the school aims to make ballet more accessible. “The school is a charity so we put everything back into the school,” she said. “We try to make it possible for anyone to attend our school.”

Their students dance at a “very high level.” “Our teachers are mainly from the most famous

companies in Russia, and trained in the Soviet generation when Russian ballet was technically really incredible,” Harriet explained. “Our artistic director Evgeny Goremykin danced with the Bolshoi Ballet for 20 years and so he passes on the technique and knowledge he himself received.”

"We want our students to have choices in life and we educate academically as well as teaching ballet. If you’re going to be an artist, you must be educated. It is important to see dancers on stage who have received a cultural and rich education,” Harriet said.

"It’s a very competitive world; we hope our students will all dance professionally but maybe they will decide to go to university instead, or when they have finished their ballet career they could change paths, so at least they’re equipped for the modern world.

Our students are well rounded individuals who have choices as well as being technically very well trained to a high standard. They love their work.”

The school has a strong

outreach program in Lambeth where they perform regularly for local school children. “As part of this performance at the London Palladium, 800 children will visit a theatre –many of them for the first time. Their first experience of ballet will be at a really high level with some of the greatest dancers in the world dancing for them while our students will perform with these wonderful artists,” Harriet said. “Ballet students practice every day in a class because they want to perform on the stage, and this is an opportunity for our students to develop as artists as they will see the very best, and dance alongside them. What an amazing experience for them.”

Harriet hopes attending the performance will inspire some future young ballerinas to start taking classes –and particularly male dancers. “We want more boys!” she said. “The long-term objective is people will see the school and see its work and think ‘they might make it possible for me to dance’.” 70 percent of their students receive subsidised training, which is around a 40

percent reduction on term prices.

It’s ideal to start ballet at age ten; from age 14 upwards students may study at LRBS vocationally but they also take children for after school ballet lessons. “We have children who come every day after school and we recruit them into the school from age 14 full time. We have small GCSE groups as well. It is very hard work but we find the students love it and just flower before our eyes. It is wonderful to see,” the director said.

The plan is to have more performances, like the Palladium event, next year. “It is a wonderful opportunity to work with these inspirational artists from Russia.

It is a very simple vision: they show their art for young children in a theatre setting, nothing more nothing less,” Harriet said. “We want ordinary people to come along, and that’s why the tickets are £20, £30 or £50, to make it accessible, and affordable for ordinary people.”

“We have to make an effort to do these things; to give people educational and enriching

experiences, something outside of their own life. Russian ballet is extremely beautiful. We’re very excited about this.”

The new piece of choreography created for this performance is then being taken out as part of the school’s outreach work –a mix of contemporary and classical styles.

London Russian Ballet School started in 2010, and has just received planning permission to develop its site on Clapham Manor Street.

The school also has classes for adults who really love its uncompromising approach: “It’s incredibly good for you, and total relaxation when the mind and body work together.”

We are family N

ew Yorker Rafael Klein, a sculptor and painter, has lived in England for 35 years, most of those in Nunhead. He has a wife and two grown daughters and his artwork can always be seen at several places around the borough of Southwark, notably the beautiful entrance to Nunhead Station he created.

Life was rosy with commissions for sculpture coming in and his paintings selling steadily. But then Donald Trump wanted to build a dividing wall between the US and Mexico, and a majority of British people wanted to create a division between us and mainland Europe on the back of an immigration ticket. From one single thought about how the world was changing, Rafael decided he wanted to make work about the family of mankind. ‘I thought that humanity,’ began the artist when we met at his exhibition in Rochester Cathedral, ‘was about togetherness, not building walls.’ He has since spent the past two years creating that family in steel.

Now, with Trump as President and Brexit under way, Rafael is unsure whether he will be allowed to stay here because he is still technically an American citizen. He has already spent thousands of pounds on becoming British on the insistence of his English family, but it hasn’t been as straightforward as he hoped.

But Klein is as tough as the work he creates, although his creations do have smoother edges than this artist who knows the mean streets of New York.

The structures have a soft, flowing look to them, they invite you to touch - stroke them even. In fact, as we talked in front of his monumental Quartet, four figures conjoined, he stopped to point out a lady touching a sculpture. “Look! Look!’ he whispered excitedly - and in reverence to our surroundings - ‘She’s touching… I wish more people would do that.’

Family Tree is inspired by the thought that we are all connected. The huge sculptures can breathe and be free in the space a cathedral can provide. Like the stained glass windows, they allow the viewer to simultaneously look at them and through them, because they do not block your view but add to it.

This is the penultimate venue on a tour of the country’s major cathedrals, with the final exhibition in Wells where he will also give a talk about his art books at the Literature Festival there.

After that it will be back to sorting out his status as a Brit and his next exhibition. There was a hint that he may show a couple of pieces in a new Bermondsey gallery if it is spacious enough to not smother the work.

Budding young star-gazers can learn about astronauts, rockets, and future space missions at the Royal Observatory’s Weekend Space Cadets.

Lighthouse family fun

Families can enjoy musical instrument making and fairytales gone bad as part of the special Erith Lighthouse celebrations.

Erith Lighthouse, at the entrance at Erith pier, has re-opened for three weeks (starting September 7) to revisit the area’s history as a place of riverside leisure.

Family events include hand-made music on Saturday, September 16, where families can create their

own kazoos, cardboard guitars and lolly stick harmonicas at the Erith Lighthouse café, 9.30am to 12.30pm.

Tickets have just been put on sale for a fab Thunderbirds takeover of the Emirates Air Line cable car.

Running from Friday, September 22 to Sunday, October 29, Thunderbirds are Go will see the cable car terminal undergo a Tracey Island makeover, featuring large models of Thunderbird 1 and 2, and allow visitors to take off in a themed cabin.

Cable cars Are Go!

Snap up dino tickets

Dino fans will want to snap up tickets to Dinosaurs in the Wild, a new multi-million hit attraction that’s arriving on Greenwich Peninsula on February 12 next year.

The attraction, which launched in Birmingham before moving to Manchester, will take families back 67 million years to be immersed amongst a world of dinosaurs.

They can travel by time machine to join scientists in a research station built in the Late Cretaceous period. The general effect of the Orders would be to: (a) extend the existing Blackheath (BK) and Kidbrooke North (KN) Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs); (b) retain double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions where they are currently located and provide additional double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions: (i) at road junctions within the extended parts of BK and KN CPZs; and (ii) in Rochester Way, so that they would extend north of Kidbrooke Way for approximately 115 metres on the east side and 70 metres on the west side; (c) (i) provide that in addition to the roads within the existing BK CPZ, the extended BK CPZ would include the roads and lengths of roads listed in Schedule 1 to this Notice and would retain operational hours of between 11am and 12noon on Mondays to Fridays inclusive “the BK CPZ hours”; (ii) provide permit holders parking places that would operate between 9am and 10am on Mondays to Fridays inclusive on the northeast side of Kidbrooke Park Road, between Kidbroooke Park Close and Wricklemarsh Road; (iii) provide a permit parking area throughout that part of Kidbrooke Park Close that is public highway (this will be indicated by the sign “Permit holders parking only past this point” without any specific marked out parking places on the carriageway); and (iv) provide a combination of permit holders parking places and single yellow line waiting restrictions that would operate during the BK CPZ hours throughout the extended part of BK CPZ except where the double yellow lines, parking places and parking area referred to a sub-paragraphs 2(b)(i), 2(c)(ii) and 2(c)(iii) above would be provided; (d) (i) provide that in addition to the roads within the existing KN CPZ, the extended KN CPZ would include Rochester Way, between Wricklemarsh Road and Kidbrooke Way and would retain operational hours of between 10.30am and 12.30pm on Mondays to Fridays inclusive “the KN CPZ hours”; (ii) provide a combination of permit holders parking places and single yellow line waiting restrictions that would operate during the KN CPZ hours throughout the extended KN CPZ not referred to in sub-paragraph 2(b) above; (e) provide that: (i) residents whose postal address is within BK or KN CPZ would be able to purchase permits and visitors’ vouchers; and (ii) business users whose postal address is within BK or KN CPZ would be able to purchase permits, for parking within their respective CPZs at the rates set out in Schedule 2 to this Notice; and (f) provide that in respect of Zone BK CPZ referred to in sub-paragraph 2(e) above, the postal addresses shall include all those in Lambourne Place, Rosse Mews and Shooters Hill Road (south side, between St. German’s Place and Rochester Way).

3. NOTICE IS ALSO HEREBY GIVEN that the Council propose to convert the footway on the north-east side of Rochester Way, between the north-eastern kerb-line of Kidbrooke Way and the pedal cycle / foot bridge approximately 100 metres north of that kerb-line into cycle track, using powers under section 65 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Cyclists and pedestrians would share the full width of the cycle track, with each having equal rights over them.
