Thames tidal tests, virtual reality games, and pop-up cinemas

WHITE WATER-GATE See the tidal Thames up close at the annual test closure of the Thames Barrier. As part of the barrier’s yearly check up, the gates rotate 90 degrees to fully closed, stopping the tide going into London. As the tides continues to come in, a high level of water builds up downstream, so that the water levels are differently on either sides of the gate. Just after high water on the high tide, the gates rotate further creating a two metre gap underneath, which causes a white water rush of water behind each of the massive gates, attracting birds to come down and feed on the small fish.

The under-spill lasts about two hours.

atch post Brit Pop rockers Travis headlining On Blackheath festival in their exclusive London gig. Joining a lineup featuring the Libertines, KT Tunstall, Seasick Steve, and Jake Bugg, the Saturday headliners are bringing their iconic second album The Man Who to the stage for one of two shows.

The 1999 album is being rereleased as a limited box set in September.

“We’re doing one show in Manchester the day before. We wanted to do this in a festival environment, in that zone, so Blackheath was perfect,” lead singer and songwriter Fran Healy told the Weekender. “At a festival you’ve got an audience that isn’t a specific Travis audience.

But one in six households had that album so people should be familiar with it.”

The album, which sold nearly three million copies and spent eleven weeks at Number 1, produced the timeless singles Writing to Reach You, Driftwood, Turn, and possibly the band’s most iconic song Why Does It Always Rain On Me. The musician describes it as a “solid piece of work.” “We didn’t bargain on The Man Who being so big but when it did we were kind of glad because the songs were strong,” Fran said. “It’s a special record because it was us finding our voice. It was weird.

In the music biz there’s not a big window of opportunity -you either strike it lucky on the first or second album. Most bands don’t make it to the third.”

While Travis’ first album was “very rocky and Brit poppy,” the second album baffled audiences upon its release. “The first album was heavy on guitar and loud and the second record was very quiet, and subdued. Journalists were like ‘what the f*ck is this?’

They just said we were sh*t,” the Berlin-based artist recalled.

“They thought we were done for, they didn’t know what we were.

In hindsight I’d say we were the first post Brit Pop band. And that’s the reason we get compared to Coldplay.”

The tides of musical trends turn quickly. “A glut of bands got picked up in the wake of The Man Who. Record companies go out and sign a bunch of bands who play guitar. Two years later, the Strokes came through and they were the doorman for bands like the Killers, and Franz Ferdinand,” Fran said.

“It wasn’t a deliberate thing,” he continued. “You make the record you make, hope for the best, and if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction there’s nothing you can

  do. Our first album came out at the same time as Radiohead, Oasis, and the Verve all brought out new albums. That whole year was taken up.”

Brit pop was tailing off as The Man Who came out. “Radio was ready. People really liked it, and after that we went on our way with the sound that we had,” the 44-year-old said.

The band, formed in Glasgow, had played about 240 shows the year before, then 240 after the album’s release. “We went all over the world touring the Man Who. In America they didn’t pick it up, but a year later they decided to release it so we had to do the whole thing again,” the singer said. “That rolled into the next albumThe Invisible Band. From 1996 to 2003 we

didn’t stop. It was exhausting but you’re 26 years old -you’re just like come on!”

The industry is harder now.

“Where you can access music has been diluted; there’s so many places so it’s harder to focus people’s attention,” Fran said. “The Man Who was only on the radio and in record shops. It’s much easier, I think, to orchestrate a campaign over three platforms – press, radio, and retail. Two years ago we played at V festival, and we were the only ones playing guitar,” he said. “It’s all pop music now, playing to backing tracks.

A lot of musicians who would have picked up a guitar 20 years ago are now DJs or producers.

It’s almost repeating the way music was in the ‘50s and ‘60s,

where you had your stars, and a bank of songwriters. It’s the generation coming up behind, the 8-16 year olds who are picking up instruments again.”

“When I was coming through as a 16 year old I was listening to Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Bowie. Now the kids are listening to bands from the ‘90s -lots of guitar bands.

The people making music now are more like from the ‘80s.”

It was the ‘90s when an 18-yearold Fran met his bandmates: Dougie Payne (bass guitar), Andy Dunlop (lead guitar), and Neil Primrose (drums, percussion).

“We’ve been very lucky,” he reflected. “Looking at bands that are still together, they’re the ones whose relationships are quite solid, and each personality is

different enough.”

“I’ve been living in Berlin for nine years, Andy’s in Liverpool, Dougie’s in Glasgow, and Neil’s in Lancaster. We don’t really see each other when we’re not working –you do an intensive tour for nine months and then you’re like ‘see ya’ and go back to your real family, and driving your kids around.”

    THE SECOND Charlton and Woolwich Free Film festival returns from September 8-16. Volunteer Paul Chapman is running two of the screenings, and has been busy planning the event with the rest of the team.

“It’s grown out of the Free Film Festival, which was originally in Peckham and Nunhead in 2010,” Paul said. “The Free Film Festival umbrella is really well established; they don’t offer money but they offer equipment, training, screens.”

It costs between £80 and £100 for the rights to play a film once –more if it’s an outdoor screening. “Coming up with the money comes down to individuals raising money.

Around £1200,” Paul said.

“We got a bit of sponsorship from the council, and we got some sponsorship for the shorts film festival; we’ve got two categories: worldwide and films shot within the south London area. That’s an exciting development.”

The volunteers meet early in the year, and over time the numbers boil down to a core group. “And then we put on what films we want to put on,” Paul said. “I’m hosting a film [Hidden Figures] at my kids’ primary school [Thorntree Primary School]. It’s about human computers doing amazing cutting edge things.”

Following a screening of sci-fi flick Sunshine, astrologers will talk to audiences about the film. “Those things work really well. We’ve got Battle of Britain

screening and a war historian is doing a walk around tour of war time sites of Woolwich,” Paul said.

The festival is also about opening up local venues people may not have visited. “St George’s Garrison Church, in Woolwich, is a great place but it’s not well known. It’s quite hidden, out of the way, and has stunning architecture.”

Paul has also planned a screening of Withnail and I. “We’ve got the Deserter blog coming for that

They’re like the Withnail and I of Charlton.”

The Artfix Woolwich screening of Frida is already proving hugely successful.

“It’s just

going through the roof with people sharing about it online,” Paul said.

Meanwhile Woolwich’s Building 10 is holding a Grease-sing-along. “it’s a very cool building they use for vintage markets.

And it’s next to the Tap Room, so people can go and get a drink before or after,” Paul said. “People involved in the festival have a vested interest in showing the places off. That’s

why we’ve picked the venues we’ve chosen. I’m holding Withnail and I at the White Swan, which is my local. I love my local.”

he magnificent Greenwich Comedy Festival returns with a sensational selection of comedians, including Dylan Moran, Alan Davies, Dara O’Briain, Sara Pascoe, Adam Hills, Ed Byrne, Joe Lycett, Shappi Korsandi and many more.

Right now most of them are on a trial run for the Greenwich Festival in Edinburgh where they will fine tune their acts for a more discerning audience. Edinburgh regular David O’Doherty took time out to talk to the Weekender between sets.

I’ve interviewed many comedians and found that most find it difficult to switch off, or not be ‘on’. They appear to find it hard to be serious, their answers are flippant and I end up not knowing what is true or false.

Trying to get some background to O’Doherty’s life I found that he may or may not have studied economics and philosophy at university, but he definitely did want to be a piano player so “did a lot of tinkling” while he was there. He may also have worked in a bike shop and done telemarketing, although I can’t imagine him doing that. If he did, I do not think many sales were made; his mind wanders in and out of the obscure far too much to be focused on selling. I do, though, reckon a lot of the people he cold-called had very interesting conversations with him.

My research revealed that he is a writer of children’s books, which I found intriguing. More interesting was when he told me he began writing for young people when he worked in a residential children’s home, before he did stand up. “I used to read my stories to the kids there and they used to hate them.

But they'd give beautifully direct feedback. “This is so boring!” I love that about kids,” he said.

I asked when he realised he wanted to be comedian and did not get an answer. I got this anecdote instead: “I did an interview for a US visa a couple of years ago and the guy at the embassy asked me to state my occupation, and when I said 'comedian', he followed up with "and what is the best joke?" And he

meant it completely seriously. That frantic moment of scouring my brain for something to say was when I realised that this is what I do. I know that wasn't the question, but I couldn't think of a good answer.”

David O’Doherty enjoys writing, whether it is for his stand-up act, books for children, or radio plays or TV but it is an audience getting a new joke that he enjoys more than anything: “When they laugh, it's the greatest job in the world,” he says.

“When they don't, you wish you'd stuck with the telemarketing or bike shop.”

The funny man adds that he is “working on a book about a 12 year old who robs a bank,” but I suspect he might not be.

Much of David’s time is spent on tour but he doesn’t mind, telling me that he likes doing shows. He justifies the travelling with: “I realise my comedy is a bit weird, so I have to travel round to find the people who are into it.”

Greenwich audiences will be treated to “a bunch of songs and ideas I've thought of over the last year. Some of it will be lovingly crafted, fed with a baby's bottle from birth, and other bits will be absolute rubbish I've thought of on the spot.”

He says this Greenwich show will be called David O'Doherty Mean Time before adding, “you know I think that might be an even worse joke than the one at the start.” It was, and explains why I didn’t include his earlier joke. But at least he promises the show will be better than his replies.

To close, I asked if he had anything to add and, surprises, surprise, he did: “Keep your tyres pumped up to the correct PSI pressure. Cycling with pumped up tyres uses over 30% less effort.”

And on that high note we called it a day. I reckon his show will be much better.

he Small Faces arrived in a whirlwind and left soon after in a tornado, but in their short time together they made some fantastic and iconic music.

Carol Harrison has documented those few years in All Or Nothing, a play that follows front man Steve Marriott's helter-skelter life in a soundscape of Small Faces’ songs.

The Churchill Theatre audience in Bromley was made up of those that remember the 60s and were Small Faces fans, and those that are too young to remember but were introduced to the era by parents, but all were ready to rock and roll from the first bars of Whatcha Gonna Do About It to the last scissor kick leap that finished off Lazy Sunday.

Between those outlying markers we saw the young Marriott working hard to get into bands and play his beloved Chicago R&B, finally settling with the foursome that we knew and grew to love.

As is the wont of these feel good musical biographies, the down times are skirted over in order to get more songs in, but we get a brief glimpse of the drink and drugs and getting robbed by management problems. And that is enough grime; for those who want the dirt there are books to go and read, but for tonight we just want the music and we are not disappointed.

The actors who play the band are accomplished in their musicianship and in getting the stage moves right. Samuel Pope as the young Steve Marriott nearly had the voice

right as well, which was a feat on its own because Marriott’s voice was powerfully unique.

For me, though, the standout performance was from Chris Simmons playing the older Marriott

who narrates the play, talking us through each development of his and the band’s short life.

All Or Nothing is not perfect, the 1970s Gabicci tops were an anachronism that played havoc

with my OCD, but as a fan it was a great night’s entertainment for me and everyone in attendance who enjoyed the medley of rousing tunes at the end.

PIE AND mash is the original fast food and first originated in South East London when Henry Blanchard opened a shop in SE1 in 1844. Because it was so cheap and nutritious the dish soon spread across London and some of those early pioneers are still going strong today: Manze, Cooke and Goddard are all pie and mash dynasties that began in the 19th century.

The Borough of Greenwich has its fair share of good pie shops and I’m on a mission to get round to sample them all. First stop on my Life of Pie adventure was Welling.

This pie shop does exactly what you want a pie shop to do and it does it well. There are no fancy fripperies here, they don’t even mess about with a fancy name - It is called Pie & Mash Shop. You are not going to get caught by surprise here because it is exactly what it says it is. It even says the same thing on the window so there is no mistaking

what this establishment is all about.

Inside the clues are also all there. White tiles with a flash of green tiling. Wooden bench booths each side of a marble top table on wrought iron legs. The condiments set out are basic: white salt, white pepper, vinegar and chilli vinegar. The cutlery is in a tray on the counter. This is as close to traditional as you’re going to get, and that is just what I want.

To get a broad range of the fare here I had pie and mash, and stewed eels and mash, both with liquor, of course. And the first thing I did was taste the mash and then the liquor to see how much salt, pepper and vinegar I needed to add to get the taste of everything just right.

They give a good portion of mash. It was sturdy, not watery and had a good potato flavour.

You’ll be surprised at how many places use a cheap potato that is quite tasteless and bland.

that was not too thin and not overover thick. I would have preferred it with more of a parsley flavour, but that is just my personal preference. This was a good drop of liquor and that is all that really counts.

The pie was fine. I like mine a little more crispy on top, but I’m not complaining. The meat inside was dark brown in colour and very tasty, so all in all it was a good pie.

I usually close my eyes when I’m eating eels and think of my Nan, the lady who first took me

for pie and mash so many years ago in Bermondsey. These eels were stewed to perfection. The succulent flesh fell beautifully off the bone. My nan would have liked these eels.

Pie & Mash Shop provides proper, traditional pie and mash.

Yes, there are a couple of cafe type items on offer for people that care not for London tradition, and gravy for those that are scared of ‘that green stuff’, but when I was there every customer was having pie and mash.

A word of warning: the chilli

There are some old favourite puddings to be had as well and I nearly talked myself into the Spotted Dick, but I was well and truly stuffed.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Royal Borough of Greenwich who need to carry out a Crain Operation to lift some units onto the roof of the Woolwich Centre.

2. The Order will come into operation on 17-09-2017 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 1 day. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading. Wellington Street at the junctions with Market Street and Polytechnic Street.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via East Bound – Wellington Street, Market Street, Calderwood Street and Thomas Street. West Bound – Thomas Street, Woolwich New Road, Grand Depo Road and John Wilson Street.

Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.
