reenwich born Tyler Kennington was destined for a life in show business from a young age.

The actor - who has recently joined the cast of the smash-hit West End production of MAMMA MIA! - was introduced to the world of performance at the tender age of two when his parents put him forward to a modeling agency.

Tyler’s father is the worldrenowned stunt coordinator Paul Kennington and visits to movie locations as an infant further ignited the wannabe star’s interest in the arts.

“I’ve grown up going on set,

watching and learning from him,” Tyler tells me in a break between shows at the Novello Theatre.

Born in Greenwich Hospital, Tyler has lived near Greenwich Park for most of his life and attended All Saints School in Blackheath as well as the local Stagecoach theatre club. “I started going to classes on a Saturday to see if I liked singing and acting.”

The Greenwich Theatre also played a big part in Tyler’s career choice “I always went to see the panto in Greenwich and I’d watch the lead male or the prince and I remember wanting to be like them one day.”

Eventually the young actor took a place at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, so he could concentrate on his performance techniques full time. After a few years - at the age of 13 - Tyler landed a role in the West End Revival of Oliver! at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane alongside Jodie Prenger, Omid Djalili and Russ Abbott. “They were a real inspiration and made me decide it was definitely something I wanted to do when I got older.” Tyler enthuses.

The juvenile actor stayed with the show for a year and half and then returned to his studies once again.

television series Camelot, with an all-star cast, which included Joseph Fiennes and Jamie Campbell Bower. The filming of the series took Tyler to Ireland, where coincidently, his dad was coordinating the stunts for a new television show called Game Of Thrones. “I didn’t know what Game of Thrones was, no one did, but when it came out it completely squashed Camelot and it [Camelot] was a flop.”

After playing some fairly meaty roles during his final studies at drama school and discovering his talent for dancing, Tyler took on an abundance of industry auditions and was thrilled to be cast in the ABBA musical MAMMA MIA!, which has just entered its 19th year in London. It marks Tyler’s return to the West End after eight years and he told me, “the show is just high energy, full of fun and gives you a smile when you watch it” Tyler has joined the production as a member of the ensemble, which at one point means he has to dance in flippers. “It’s hilarious.

When we first put them on we were all tripping over.” Tyler explains, “I’ve done a lot of scuba diving so it feels really weird putting a wetsuit and flippers on but not being anywhere near water.”

As well as being part of the male chorus Tyler also has the responsibility of covering two of the leading roles (Sky’s friends Eddie and Pepper), which could

mean a call to perform a larger part of the action at any time.

To date, MAMMA MIA! has been seen by over 60 million people in 50 productions in 16 different languages grossing more than $2 billion at the box office. I ask Tyler why he thinks the musical has such an enduring appeal. “You can be from anywhere in the world and you’ll know at least one of ABBA’s songs.”

As well as enjoying his return to the stage, Tyler is following firmly in his father’s footsteps.

“I’m training to do stunt work.

There are six skills that you have to become semi-professional in, so

I’ve set my goal to do that and I’m learning Kung Fu.” Tyler explains, “My dad’s recently done some stunt doubling for Sean Bean and George Clooney and he’s doing a new thing called Electric Dreams, with Bryan Cranston. I did a bit of work with him on that, which was great.”

Tyler also tells me that along with his father he will be imparting his knowledge on the next generation of London performers in a new venture, offering stunt workshops to children.

ondon is arguably the foremost city on the planet for theatre. Ok, I’m sure the Americans will try to argue that New York is better, but for me there’s no place like home.

closure in 1979 when Eltham born actor, Bob Hope decided to fund a theatre centre in his hometown, particularly for the benefit of young people. Bob Hope was born in Craigton Road in 1903 and after emigrating to the USA at the age of four, continued to maintain strong links with the town.

The eminent actor visited the theatre in 1980 and from the stage announced to members, the public and a large contingent of press that he intended to get the project off the ground. “And that’s very important to me” he added.

The purchase of the theatre was eventually completed in 1982 and in the thirty-ninth year of its existence, Eltham Little Theatre became the Bob Hope Theatre, Eltham, and secured its permanent home.

The theatre has continued to receive generous donations from the Bob Hope Foundation in the intervening years, including in August 1991, Bob donated £28,000 from the Benefit Performance he staged at the London Palladium to raise money directly for the theatre.

Now, the Bob Hope Theatre is the envy of professional and nonprofessional theatre companies across south London and offers not only a salubrious auditorium, but excellent dressing room facilities, a large set dock and - with the new refurbishments - will soon have a large wardrobe area behind the original proscenium arch (which is still visible at the back of the stage).

And Bob Hope isn’t the theatre’s only famous son. Film star Jude

And it’s not just the West End that boasts quality theatrical productions, as the Off-West End and Fringe scene– including the glorious Greenwich Theatre - is world-renowned.

But look even closer and you’ll find a circuit within your locale, which provides top quality productions at a fraction of the cost. Of course, I’m talking about the world of amateur dramatics, but with the abundance of talent within Greenwich Borough, calling many of the productions ‘amateur’ feels a little insulting.

None so much as the folks at the Bob Hope Theatre Actors’

Company in Eltham, who are known throughout south London for providing professional standard productions of classic shows. Their last play - Sand Castles by Bob Larbey - belied their non-pro status and with Monty Python’s Spamalot already in rehearsals for November and a production of the classic play The 39 Steps on the cards, the next year is looking like a busy spell for the celebrated theatre company.

And that’s not all; the little theatre they call home is undergoing more major refurbishments this summer, with an extensive dressing room expansion and further improvements to the backstage area and entrance lobby as well as the long awaited erection of a new sign.

The theatre started life as the Eltham Parish Hall, before becoming the permanent home of Eltham Little Theatre in 1946. It was saved from

Law – who is about to play Albus Dumbledore in the second installment of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - took his first tentative steps into the world of acting on stage at the Bob Hope Theatre and continues to be a big supporter of their work.

The theatre has also maintained relationships with a whole host of affiliate theatre companies over the years - many of which hire the venue - including the Bromley Players, who will stage a 50th anniversary concert in September.

The Bob Hope Theatre Actors’ Company produces at least six of their own productions a year, including the annual pantomime, while maintaining the theatre, which is no mean feat, when you consider it’s entirely staffed by volunteers.

With rehearsals in full swing for their November musical production of Spamalot and news the company has been granted the rights to put on the classic Alfred Hitchcock spy thriller The 39 Steps, the future success of the Bob Hope Theatre is surely guaranteed. www.bobhopetheatre.co.uk

A woman for all seasons Jackie Power

T

he last of the summer months can be hot and humid - but August seems more like autumn. Temperatures have been cool, with strong westerly winds and occasional torrential downpours.

August work continues with

pruning the spring and summer flowering shrubs such as Ceanothus, Lavender, and Honeysuckle once they have finished flowering. To keep Lavender bushes from becoming woody with top heavy foliage - cut down the flower stems after the blooms have finished. These can be dried in

small bunches – the summery floral aroma will last many months.

As summer begins to slip away – it is time to think about ordering bulbs for spring displays. Daffodils (Narcissus) are popular and there are many different types to choose from; the dwarf ones which are more suited to window boxes/tubs such as the fragrant N. Cheerfulness, or N. ‘Jack Snipe’ and N. ‘Little Beauty’. The larger Daffodils – like N. ‘Cassata’ and N. ‘Fortune’ are for the borders and lovely to grow for cut flowers; once planted they will naturalise and appear each year. Scilla is another spring flowering plant - the dwarf variety S. Sibirica produces startlingly deep blue flowers, it tolerates semi shade and is apparently squirrel proof!

There are still numerous plants to enjoy in the late summer garden such as the bright, cheerful giant Sunflowers. Summer bedding plants – geraniums and petunias continue to give showy displays in window boxes and hanging baskets. Fuchsias have produced exceptional flower displays this season. The Calendula or ‘pot marigold’ is a modest summer annual - with its bright orange or golden yellow flowers; grown in large clumps it’s

always impressive and a delight to see.

Calendula also has hidden talents - it is a medicinal plant and probably one of the most useful in the herbalist’s dispensary. Calendula is described as an anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-viral – and used to treat a range of conditions from inflamed mucous membranes, gastric ulcers to poorly healing wounds, burns, eczema, and acne; Calendula is often found in herbal skin creams. The plant can cause an allergic reaction although rare, but should not be used to treat illness except under the guidance of a qualified herbalist.

Sow seeds for the hardier salad plants such as lamb’s lettuce, Winter density and Lettuce Veneziana to ensure an early supply of tasty leaves; grow these plants in containers and window boxes as a change from the usual ornamentals.

Increase stocks of herb plants for next year - take 4” cuttings of Rosemary, Lavender, Hyssop and Mint. Remove lower leaves (up to about an inch), place cuttings in sandy soil in

containers or directly in open sheltered ground, provide some covering (a cloche) to protect from sun and wind (otherwise the cuttings will dry out and are likely to fail). Keep the soil moist and mist leaves every other day.

ven the inevitable August downpour and subsequent delay to the trains couldn’t dampen my spirits last week, when I took my housemate for a visit to Zeytin Restaurant on Greenwich High Road.

We were given a rapturous welcome by the staff at the traditional Turkish restaurant and suitably attended to before being joined by restaurant owner Sitki.

The former automotive designer - who has worked in the insurance industry for the last seven years - has taken the step into the world of food with his father Mehmet, who has been in the restaurant business for many years. The result of their foray is a stunning establishment, with impeccable interior design, beautifully coupling the traditional with the modern-day.

And that concept is also mirrored in the food they serve with a menu boasting plenty of traditional Turkish fare juxtaposed with contemporary dishes.

Sitting beneath decorative medieval lanterns and stripped wooden beams, we were joined

by Sitki, who guided us through some of the history behind the dishes he had chosen for us to sample.

He explained that the family was from the Hatay Southern region of Turkey and that many of the dishes originated from the area around the city of Antakya, including one of our starters, the simply exquisite Humus Kavurma.

The dish features sautéed lamb, pine kernels and paprika and has a beautiful mix of flavours.

We also tried Hellim and Sucuk – grilled halloumi and Turkish spicy sausage- and both dishes were complimented with a bowl of Kisir (a fine bulgar wheat dish) and some Cacik yogurt dip.

Sitki gave us the lowdown on the origin of virtually every element on our plates as well as where the ingredients had been sourced. As his father Mehmet had previously been in the fruit and vegetable delivery business, they have the contacts to get only the very best fresh produce every day, as well as ensuring all of the meat is market bought. With the open kitchen, you can even select your own cuts if you want to.

We tried some very meaty delicacies for our main course and shared a plate of Karişik Izgara, a selection of lamb shish, chicken shish and Adana köfte, which were some of the most succulent I have ever tasted.

We mopped up the juices with Turkish flatbread and sipped on the house red wine, which was smooth and warming.

To complete our Turkish dining

experience, Sitki insisted we sampled some traditional tea and wonderfully decadent Baklava made that morning by Mehmek.

Zeytin provided us with a really top notch dining experience. From the décor to the service and the simply excellent cuisine, I couldn’t recommend it more.

The general effect of the Orders would be to: (a) extend the existing Plumstead Station (PL) Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ); (b) provide a new CPZ, to be called Plumstead Central (PC) CPZ; (c) retain double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions where they are currently located and provide additional double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions: (i) on both sides of Ancona Road, Chestnut Rise, Majendie Road, Parkdale Road, Piedmont Road and Waverley Road at their junctions with Brewery Road; (ii) in Brewery Road, either side of its junctions with Ingledew Road, Liffler Road, Miriam Road, Orissa Road, Piedmont Road, Chestnut Rise and Parkdale Road; (iii) in Plumstead High Street, either side of its junctions with Abery Street, Garibaldi Street and Mineral Street; (iv) in Lakedale Road, either side of its junction with Conway Road and at its junction with Parkdale Road; and (v) at all road junctions within PC CPZ and the extended part of PL CPZ; (d) (i) provide that in addition to the roads within the existing PL CPZ, the extended PL CPZ would include the roads and lengths of roads listed in Schedule 1 to this Notice and would retain CPZ hours of between 9.30am and 11am on Mondays to Fridays inclusive “the PL CPZ hours”; (ii) provide a free parking place (1 hour maximum stay, no return for 2 hours) that would operate between 9am and 5.30pm on Mondays to Fridays inclusive on the north side of Brewery Road, between Ann Street and Robert Street; (iii) provide permit holders parking places with 1 hour free parking that would operate between 9am and 5.30pm on Mondays to Fridays inclusive in Brewery Road, the south side, in certain lengths between Waverley Road and Griffin Road; (iv) provide a combination of permit holders parking places and single yellow line waiting restrictions that would operate during the PL CPZ hours throughout the extended part of PL CPZ except where the double yellow lines and the parking places referred to a sub-paragraphs 2(c), 2(d)(ii) and 2(d)(iii) above would be provided; and (v) provide that the existing permit holders parking places in Conway Road, north side, between Ancona Road and Mineral Street, and south side, between Coxwell Road and Ingledew Road; would also be available to PC CPZ permit holders; (e) (i) provide that the new CPZ to be called Plumstead Central (PC) CPZ would include the roads and lengths of roads listed in Schedule 2 to this Notice and would have CPZ hours of between 9am and 5.30pm on Mondays to Saturdays inclusive “the PC CPZ hours”; (ii) provide shared-use (permit holders and pay & display) parking places in certain lengths of: (1) Conway Road, north side, between Gallosson Road and No.139 Conway Road, and south side, between Orissa Road and Willowsfield Close; (2) Gallosson Road, west side, between Bebbington Road and Mineral Street and east side, outside the Belfry Social Club; (3) Garibaldi Street, both sides, between Plumstead High Street and Abery Street; (4) Mineral Street, both sides, between Bebbington Road and Gallosson Road; and (5) White Hart Road, both sides, between Plumstead High Street and No. 7 White hart Road; (iii) provide that the charges for leaving a vehicle in a shared-use parking place without displaying a permit would be £0.80 per hour up to a maximum of four hours; (iv) provide a combination of permit holders parking places and single yellow line waiting restrictions that would operate during the PC CPZ hours throughout the extended part of PC CPZ except where the double yellow lines and shared-use parking places referred to a sub-paragraphs 2(c) and 2(e)(ii) above would be provided; and (v) provide that the proposed permit holders parking places in Conway Road, both sides, in certain lengths between Mineral Street and Liffler Road would also be available to PL CPZ permit holders; (f) provide that residents whose postal address is within PC or PL CPZ would be able to purchase permits and visitors’ vouchers for parking within their respective CPZs at the rates set out in Schedule 3 to this Notice; and (g) provide that business users whose postal address is within PC or PL CPZ would be able to purchase permits for parking within their respective CPZs at the rates set out in Schedule 3 to this Notice.

3. A copy of the proposed Orders and other documents giving more detailed particulars of the Orders are available for inspection during normal office hours until the end of six weeks from the date on which the Orders are made or, as the case may be, the Council decides not to make the Orders, at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ. 4. 6. Persons objecting to the proposed Orders should be aware that in view of the Local Government (Access to Information) Act 1985, this Council would be legally obliged to make any comments received in response to this notice, open to public inspection.
