Students and teachers from Charlton Manor Primary School have published their very own cookbook with a foreword written by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. Now We’re Cooking outlines lesson plans using food and cooking to engage and motivate students. Head teacher Tim Baker has teamed up with ‘food teacher’ Katherine Tate, and teaching specialist Marie Reynolds. Mr Baker described it as “a wonderful guide to develop a food ethos within your school full of ideas suggestions and ideas on how to use food throughout the different curricular areas.”

The inaugural festival, set in the grounds of Sir Christopher Wren’s riverside masterpiece, Old Royal Naval College, will have a bespoke covered ice rink, artisan festive food and drink, enchanting and high-calibre entertainment, and an authentic Father Christmas experience for all the family. Getting to grips with it T

he cult world of women’s wrestling has been brought to a new audience by Netflix series GLOW, based on the true story of an ‘80s female wrestling franchise in L.A. But wrestling isn’t just an American craze – the sport is growing in the UK too. To find out more the Weekender spoke to Amy Samardzija from Bermondsey, otherwise known as Candyfloss, who started wrestling when she was just 15 years old.

“I first watched WWE on TV when I was about 11 and it was different to anything I’d ever seen before. I loved the performance aspect and the theatrics so I decided to give it a go,” she said.

Amy describes wrestling as an “art form” rather than a sport, with costumes and characters a central part. But the acrobatics and carefully choreographed moves require just as much dedication as any professional athlete.

By the time she was sitting her GCSEs Amy was training four times a week with Progress Wrestling School in Brixton. A year later she had her first match and has since travelled to shows across the country. Now she’s finished college she plans to do an apprenticeship but her dream is to become a full-time pro.

Training is demanding and encompasses strength, cardio and acrobatics. It is also essential to avoid injuries in what can be a dangerous sport.

“I know people who have got concussion, dislocated shoulders. Last year I landed badly and fractured my elbow which meant I was out of training for four months,” she said.

“It’s important to trust the

people you’re wrestling because you’re really putting your life on the line.

If someone doesn’t catch you properly it can be really dangerous.”

Such intense training regimes mean close friendships are often formed between female wrestlers and Amy cites this as one of her favourite aspects of the sport.

“I’ve performed with people from all over the world and made some really good friends as it’s more about putting on a show than competing,” she explained.

During the two years she has been wrestling Amy has seen the popularity of the sport grow.

“It’s still not as big in the UK as in countries like America but new shows and promotions are popping up all the time,” she said.

In London there are now even several all-female training schools and WWE featured its first ever women’s tournament this summer. But wrestling is still very much male-dominated. When Amy first started she was the only girl at her training club and now she still trains with only a handful of other women.

Not that this phases the seventeen-year-old.

“I’m one of the youngest but because I have more experience I get the chance to help the new girls who join since the coaches are all men.”

But Amy is keen to stress women shouldn’t let this put them off.

“The whole idea is to stand out and be different so it can really boost your confidence.

I’d encourage women not to be afraid to give wrestling a go.”

onor Oak is one of those quiet little backwaters that nestle, hidden away between congested main roads and busy high streets but is as close to being inner city as you can get while still looking and feeling suburban.

Parking was easy and I soon found Hattush the restaurant of Sezar Ugur Soy, a big pop star in his native Turkey but ended up in SE London after he fell in love with a London girl, who is now his wife.

I was there to lunch with legendary Performance Artist, Rene, to discuss projects and to catch up, so it

was a pleasure to find that Hattush is a very smart place, which Sezar took pride in, talking us round the decor and his plans for a basement cinema in the coming months.

Over coffee we heard about Sezar’s life, his loves, his hopes and dreams. He told of his Friday night belly dancers and how he gets up to sing a medley of his most famous songs to his customers at the weekend.

But enough of Sezar’s pop star lifestyle, we were here to sample Turkish food and drink and I want to say now that Sezar was the perfect host; he made sure we had the best of what Hattush - and Turkey has to offer.

A platter of Cold Meze Starter was laid before us, a good mix of all the regular favourites. It was huge

and could have fed four people, so Rene and I made sure we just had a taste of each in order to not be full up too early. It looked good and each different dish had it’s own unique taste. For me the highlight was the Şakşuka where the taste of the aubergine came powering through.

Next we were brought a Hot Meze Starter and, again, it was all good, although we both agreed that the Kalamari rose above good into the realms of very special.

Turkish Efes beers were the perfect accompaniment for our starters.

On Sezar’s suggestions we opted for meat and fish dishes as our main courses, to share. We had the Chicken Sarma Beyti. This was grilled chicken wrapped in

flatbread, sliced, with a flavoured yoghurt sauce. Once again the portion was enormous. The fish dish was Seafood Charcoal: grilled salmon and king prawns with salad and potatoes. Far too much for us to eat, never mind one person.

Both dishes were well presented and well cooked. What more could you ask for? I also had a glass of Doluca, the house white, a Turkish wine that would rival any New World chardonnay I’ve had.

Sezar regaled us with tales of local stars who eat at Hattush and delighted us with an anecdote about Gordon Ramsay who belied his TV persona by doing something really nice for Sezar, then he offered Turkish coffee, which me and Rene thought was a good idea, and Baklava, which we weren't too

keen on. But there was another item on the dessert menu that I was intrigued by. It was subtitled as shredded wheat with cheese, topped with syrup and walnuts, and went by the name of Kunefe. When in Istanbul do as the Istanbullians do, I say, so we got a portion of Kunefe with two spoons.

It was different but actually a really good ending to our Turkish feast. In fact, we were fighting over the crispy bits!

Hattush is definitely one to try for authentic Turkish food and top notch music and dancing.

Charlton House are running a bee-themed day of workshops on August 24 where kids can learn about the bees living on the roof, with the chance to meet the bee keeper and see the bees in action from a viewing platform. 2. The Order will come into operation on 18th September 2017 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take one day. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.
