Music and majesty in the Painted Hall Hear the music that was written around the same time the Old Royal Naval College’s impressive hall was first painted back in the 1700s. Voyage into the unknown at the Albany Prepare to have your expectations twisted and turned in Hocus Pocus, a dreamlike family show from internationally-acclaimed company Dance Umbrella.

A look inside Magazine London:

Greenwich’s new 10,000-capacity venue

I

f you’ve strolled past Alex Chinneck’s famous installation ‘A Bullet from a Shooting Star’ in the past year, you’ve probably noticed the developments taking place on the large warehouse next to it, writes Holly O’Mahony...

And if you’ve walked past in the last month, you will have seen the bold branding naming the space: Magazine London. Since opening its doors in early September, the multi-purpose venue has announced portions of its busy line-up, featuring conferences, exhibitions, gigs and club nights.

The new 10,000-capacity venue is a collaboration between innovative space creators Venue Lab, technical production specialists Vibration Group, catering experts Moving Venue and property developers Knight Dragon. The building itself was designed by world-renowned architects Nissen Richards Studio, whose portfolio also includes Vibration Group’s multi-purpose venue Printworks in Canada Water.

Magazine London really is huge: accommodating 3,000 people across its four internal spaces plus a further 7,000 in its outside area: the Showground. The venue, which boasts panoramic views of the River Thames and Canary Wharf skyline has been described by the Vibration team as a ‘blank canvas for culture and commerce’; one that offers brands and

businesses a chance ‘to interact with global and local audiences’.

The Greenwich Weekender speaks to Simon Tracey, Vibration Group CEO, who tells us a little bit more about Magazine London and what’s in store over the coming months.

Holly O’Mahony: Magazine London has been open for roughly a month now. How have things been on site so far? From event pictures, it looks like its seen a decent amount of footfall!

Simon Tracey: The interest in the venue so far has been incredible. We’ve been organising site visits around the line-up of events and building work still taking place. The volume of initial interest and positive feedback is extremely exciting.

HOM: The events you’ve got scheduled over the coming months are pretty varied: ranging from performances by house artists like Michael Bibi (October 12) to large-scale exhibitions, such as Stylist magazine’s Stylist Live Luxe (November 8 – 10).

Can you tell us any more about what sort of events you’ll be hosting in the future? Anything in the pipeline for Christmas yet?

ST: The versatility of Magazine London is at the very heart of why we created the venue.

HOM: You announced the launch of Magazine London a year ago and have kept to your plans to open it by September 2019. Was it a smooth process or have there been any hurdles along the way?

News from the Royal Borough of Greenwich

Fresh funding for great grassroots projects The Royal Borough of Greenwich has launched the next round of its Greenwich Neighbourhood Growth Fund to help make local community projects a reality.

Since its launch in 2018 over £572,000 has been awarded to a variety of initiatives that benefit the community including playground equipment, tennis courts, arts and nature programmes, gardens, events and more.

Cllr Sizwe James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Growth, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for local community groups to apply for much needed funding that could make their dreams a reality. Whether it is a grant for essential building upgrades, improvements to a local park or buying brand new equipment, it’s a real chance to empower residents to directly improve their neighbourhoods.”

Rhonda Josephs and Caroline Guerra, parents from Plumstead, were able to revamp the playground in Winn’s Common with a grant of £30,000 from the GNGF. Rhonda said: “We have always felt that Winn’s Common

Playground has so much potential with its great location on the Common, surrounded by green space and having the paddling pool and ball court next to it…With the money raised we have been able to order some fantastic new inclusive play equipment, including a large galleon style play ship, which will be the first of its kind in the borough.”

Money is raised from new building developments The fund uses money from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) which allows councils to raise money from new building development in their boroughs.

Britain’s Got Talent finalist performs at Blackheath Halls

H

e’s the comedian who impressed all four judges on his first Britain’s Got Talent audition in 2017, so much so he provoked a standing ovation from the crowd and Amanda Holden to use her ‘golden buzzer’, sending him straight through to the semi-finals, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Daliso Chaponda continued to wow both judges and audience members, and eventually came in third place in the final round of the competition. Two years on and Daliso is embarking on his second national tour with a new show, Blah Blah Blacklist, which is coming to Blackheath Halls on Friday October 11.

For those who missed him on Britain’s Got Talent (BGT), Daliso is an African comedian from Malawi. Born to a father who worked as a lawyer for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Daliso’s family lived all over the world while he was growing up, including in Thailand, Australia and Switzerland, as well as other African countries.

It was back in 2001, while studying computer programming and English literature in Canada, that Daliso chanced upon his first comedy gig and was instantly inspired to perform at an open mic night himself. The following year, he earned his first headlining show, Feed This Black Man, which he performed at Concordia University in Montreal,

Arts where he was studying.

Fast forward to 2006 and Daliso has moved to the United Kingdom, bringing his blossoming career in comedy with him. He opened shows for comedians including John Bishop, performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (appearing on the 2008 ‘Best of the Fest’ list) and in 2014, co-wrote BBC Radio 4’s drama-comedy series When the Laughter Stops, inspired by reallife events.

However it wasn’t until he appeared on BGT in 2017 that Daliso Chaponda became a household name. Reflecting back on the experience a year later in an interview with the BBC, Daliso pointed out that his shows had jumped from 50 audience members to 1,000 since appearing on the show, which is watched by millions. On YouTube, too, many of his videos have since received millions of views.

Daliso was popular on BGT from the start, performing original jokes about everything from being single to his African heritage. Following his first audition, David Walliams commented that he was hugely likeable, while Amanda Holden praised his routine for being “selfdeprecating, funny and relevant”, and Simon Cowell added that it was in order to find people like Daliso that they made shows like BGT. Off the back of appearing on BGT, Daliso was signed by BBC Radio 4 to create his own

Dubin’s fish factory workers told on stage at the Churchill Theatre

laywright Sharon Byrne’s black comedy Gutted is coming to the stage of the Churchill Theatre in Bromley for one night only this Saturday, , writes Holly O’Mahony…

Told through a mixture of comic monologue, movement and dance, it tells the story of three women working in a Dublin fish factory in the 1980s. The story is set 30 years ago, but with Ireland only having overturned its abortion ban last year, Sharon is certain Gutted is just as relevant today as it would have been the year in which it’s set.

Sharon began writing back in 2001 and since then has written several film scripts and plays, but Gutted marks her first full production and tour. Inspired by the Dublin she grew up in during the 80s, and the real-life fish factory in her local community, Sharon knew this was the world she wanted to give a voice to through her writing. “I loved seeing the girls walk home from work everyday, chewing the fat and talking about their lives,” she recalls. “I grew up in a working class area, and it was a socially and economically difficult time. Everyone was struggling financially. Young people had to leave school early to work,

with no money for college or university.”

While Sharon always had a clear vision of the stories she wanted to tell in Gutted, the play’s format has changed considerably since her initial conceptualisations. “It began as [a series of] monologues – getting into the heads of the local working girls and imagining their lives,” she reveals.

Since the play was first staged back in 2017, its structure has largely stayed the same, but Sharon points out each new director makes their own mark on the script. Since 2018, the cast of Gutted has changed too, and is currently being performed by Irish actors Niamh Finlay, Eleanor Byrne and Sarah Hosford.

“I relate to all the characters an awful lot,” says cast member Niamh, who trained at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, graduating in 2017. “That time in Ireland was so difficult for women because of the lack of basic human rights and the denial of their worth in society,” she explains.

“Playing a young mother, I think so much of my mam and the struggles she faced. It makes me angry [but at the same time] it’s amazing to tell these stories, and really care about and understand

Now, Daliso is back on the road with a daring new stand-up show, Blah Blah Blacklist, in which he unpicks the disgraced celebrities and historical figures we’re ashamed to admit we once admired. The show also delves into new sketches on family member arrests, buildings exploding in his home country and the very real matter of the Malawian government threatening to arrest him for joking about the country’s flag.

Daliso began his Blah Blah Blacklist in September and is on tour with the show, performing it in cities across the UK, until March 2020. Catch it close to home this Friday, October 11, when Daliso performs it live at Blackheath Halls.

For Niamh, one of the best things about the play is the authenticity of the script. “The phrases and slang used by our characters are very much in our vocabulary. It really does make me laugh because they’re phrases I would have said and heard growing up.”

Gutted is first and foremost a dark comedy but at the same time, both Sharon and Niamh are hopeful audience members will walk away with an understanding of the issues surrounding women’s rights in Ireland – both past and present.

“We touch on a lot of issues like domestic abuse, sexual identity and teen pregnancy,” says Niamh.

“Women in the 80s in Ireland had to put up with so much. It makes me really happy that we’re giving a voice to those women.”

Sharon agrees, but points out many of these battles are far from over. “We are still fighting for [our] rights, whether it be in the workplace or in the home,” she cautions.

ndustrial and environmental historians often write about gasworks and waterworks and all the public utilities which make our lives more comfortable but very rarely mention the underground which services carry the water, gas and electricity to our homes and workplaces. We also never hear about how these mains were dug and work done on them – this article also tells a story about the digging of one of them.

There are obviously several different systems in the pipes under our feet. Probably one of the best set of underground pipes known to local people is the sewage system and I wrote a bit about this recently in an article about the Pumping Station in Greenwich High Road.

I mentioned the main sewer which runs under a footpath from Plumstead Station down to Crossness Pumping Station.

Before it gets to Plumstead there is a complicated system which brings together all the sewers from South London to the Greenwich Pumping Station, with another junction at what I understand is a large waterfall near Charlton football ground. I remember being told by staff at Greenwich that these tunnels are ‘better than cathedrals’.

As far as water supply is concerned we have some interesting historical remains in the conduit systems which downhill run through Greenwich Park.

These consist of brick passages through which the water would have passed. What we see today are said to be from the 17th and 18th centuries and built for Greenwich Hospital. They are said to be “built of brick, and are generally about 4 to 6 feet high and about 2 feet to 4 feet wide The earliest water supply to the public in our area came from the Kent Well at Brookmills from 1701. I don’t know if any remains of pipework for early water supply from this site have been found by archaeologists and I would be interested know.. I guess the original pipework would have been like that used for the 17rth century New River where hollowed out elm trunks were fitted together. I

have seen these at Chirk Castle, and elsewhere. By the way, if you don’t know the New River you can see it running through Enfield and Tottenham– but it’s not a river and it’s certainly not new While elm trunks seem to have worked for water supply they weren’t suitable to transmit gas and it is said that the earlies gas works used old gun barrels linked together. However gas companies needed to lay more and more mains and manufacturers of iron pipes began to increase production.

All of these pipes had to be laid in the street. When we read about the number of employees of a gas or water works always remember that many of these were out in the streets digging and laying the mains. I found a long description of how the gas main was laid between east Greenwich and Downham – and it all sounded quite exciting, and at the end the team of men who dug the main felt that they had really achieved something In the 1920s a vast amount of housing construction was undertaken on the Kent and London borders by the London County Council – this included the 1923 Downham estate. Although the Bell Green Gas Works was nearer to Downham the South Metropolitan Company deemed that gas should be taken there from their great new gas works at East Greenwich. Thus a mighty main was built from Greenwich to Downham, conceived and constructed on a heroic scale.

Nothing like it had been laid since the new mains were laid into Tunnel Avenue. What is more the new pipes were to be of a special sort never before seen in London.

The new main started as a branch from the pipes between Greenwich and the Old Kent Road near what was then the Royal Naval College in Romney Road. Traffic there could not be diverted and in the 1920s tramlines ran along main roads.

Trams couldn’t be diverted around holes in the road so more special arrangements had to be made.

In Romney Road the new main was put into a steel tube under the tram tracks, cable ducts and a sewer and they must do all of this without interrupting the gas supply. The new branch main was inserted in July 1927 and a pipe laid across Romney Road into Park Row and from there it went uphill and into Greenwich Park.

Summer passed into autumn and winter and the work proceeded.

The next obstacle at the end of Park Row was the London and Greenwich Railway which could not be interrupted. The gas main

had to go into the 2’9” between the road and the railway tunnel and a special rectangular steel structure had to be built.

The new gas main then turned east from Park Row and into Greenwich Park. At Maze Hill there was time for some geological observation. In the trench people could see the outcropping of the Thanet Sands.

This is the first layer above the chalk and here it comes to the surface as the ground slopes away towards the river. The new main would intersect four geological formations on its way to Downham and provide a practical geological lesson for anyone who followed the line of the trench.

Half way up Maze Hill on the corner of Westcombe Park Road is Vanbrugh Castle built soon after 1718. Outside the castle they dug up an ‘artistically shaped wine bottle about 110 years old’, ‘an ointment pot stated by the British Museum authorities to be of Delft Ware made in Southwark in the 17th century; and ‘an old medicine bottle dated January 25th 1754 with ‘by the King’s Royal Patent granted to Robert Turlington for his invented balsam of Life’. Does anyone know what happened to these finds?

As they reached Blackheath in the trench a layer of pebbles known as the Blackheath Beds could be seen in the trench.

These beds cap the high ground here. The gas workers had hoped to find Roman remains as they crossed the line of Watling Street but nothing was to be seen.

The trench then crossed the Heath, went down Pond Road and crossed the railway line from Blackheath Station. Beyond this, at the end of Pond Road, the main passed ‘the massive foundations of an old Manor House’. This was Wricklemarsh House built

by Sir Gregory Page in the 1720s, described as a ‘palace’ to the designs of John James.

The house was demolished in the 1780s. The gas engineers reported visits to their trenches by ‘local antiquaries’ keen to see the remains of this famous, if short lived, house’.

The main then turned west and a short distance further on at the junction of Blackheath Park and Morden Road you could see In the trench could be seen all together three of the geological formations of the area – the Woolwich beds of gravel and shingle, the Blackheath beds of pebbles, and London Clay.

It is not particularly clear which way the main continued from the Morden Road junction to cross Blackheath Park, and end up at

Lee High Road, but once there they met the trams and again steel tube had to be laid under the tram tracks. There were many more pipes and cables under the road here and eventually they inserted a concrete raft to support two gas mains and a water main.

This took a long time and caused a considerable delay.

The next obstacle was the River Quaggy in Manor Lane Lee. This crosses the road here before going into the ponds in the Park at the back of the Manor House.

Again the Woolwich beds could be seen here in the trenches as a formation of gravel, sand and shells. A tunnel was built between the concrete bridge abutments and the river bed and the gas main went under the stream through a special steel tube. They dug deep into the clay because they thought that the main would be continually soaked with water.

Then another pebble bed was found which included a previously undetected ‘mineral spring’ giving out 6,000 to 10,000 gallons of water an hour. Two pumps dealt with the problem until the water could be channelled away and a ‘ferruginous’ deposit was left on the road where it had run.

Then the railway further up Manor Road had to be crossed.

This was easy since the line is on an embankment but ‘the greatest care had to be exercised’ to make sure the railway bridge would not move because of the gas main.

Round the corner in St. Mildred’s Road another railway bridge caused even more problems.

The road was a bus route and special heavy duty bridges had to be built to carry the buses along with special traffic arrangements agreed with the police while work went on.

As the main was dug across Hither Green and Catford to the Bromley Road engineers found a lot of London clay. This was not easy to deal with and as winter came the clay became frozen and unworkable. As it got near Christmas they were unable to work at all and the frozen trench could not be continued until better weather came.

When spring came they had reached the Bromley Road where were trams and once again a steel tube had to be constructed under the tram tracks. At the junction of Bellingham Road and Bromley Hill the main reached a control point where the pressure of the gas was regulated. Then the line of the main turned west

and continued into Bell Green Gas Works. It turns out that South Metropolitan gas from East Greenwich was in fact supplying the South Suburban’s Bell Green Gas Works to be sent on to Downham from there.

To get to Bell Green they had again to cross the railway at Bellingham Station. To get the main across, with no disturbance to the trains, they had to rebuild the railway bridge. The railway company also said that they must allow for two additional railway lines. There were also problems with the third rail of the electrified railway and special timbers had to be used as an insulator. The main was covered with ‘bituminous material’ to ‘protect it against damage from stray electrical currents’. They then carried on under the Bellingham Estate.

At Bell Green the main had reached its destination – a meter house just outside the gas works. It had then to be tested for leaks with ordinary air. This was undertaken from Bell Green and the main was finally filled with gas from East Greenwich on 10th July 1928. The work had taken just a year to complete.

And that’s how one line of gas pipes was laid from Greenwich to Downham!

harlton Athletic’s fixture against Derby County on Saturday 19 October will see Young Greenwich, the youth service CACT delivers on behalf of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, go pink to support Lyle Taylor’s Pink October campaign.

The striker visited Avery Hill Youth Hub in Eltham on Thursday 3 October to meet young people and pick out a winner from a poster competition Young Greenwich members took part in to raise awareness about breast cancer.

Young Greenwich Day is an annual matchday aimed at celebrating young people in Royal Greenwich. Open to young people aged 10-19 (or up to 25 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) who live, work or study in the Borough, the free event will offer a range of activities for young people to take part in.

These will include archery, judo, badgemaking, arts & crafts and more. Supporters will be encouraged to wear pink on the day to show their support for the cause.

“To take something that I want to do and to help and for have them [the young

people] to be a part of it and want to be a part of it is amazing for me”, Lyle said.

“The fact that I’m in a position to help and inspire young people is massive because I had my own idols growing up… to be in a position whereby I can give that little bit back and be attainable.”

Selina Zhang and Natasha Watson won the competition and will have their poster designs featured at The Valley on Young Greenwich Day. Shade Thompson, CACT’s Marketing & Outreach Officer for Young Greenwich, said: “I am delighted that we are collaborating with Lyle Taylor to support Cancer Research. To have members of Young Greenwich involved in such a worthy cause is amazing.”

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich has made an Order to prevent danger to the public caused by motor vehicles accessing Drawdock Road when events are held at Magazine London, Greenwich Peninsula. The effect of the Order will be to temporarily prohibit vehicles other than taxis from entering Drawdock Road at its junction with Ordnance Crescent on days when events are held at Magazine London, Greenwich Peninsula.

2. The above restrictions will only apply at such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by the placing of the appropriate traffic signs.

3. The Order will come into force on Saturday 12th October 2019 and will continue in force for up to 18 months, or until the danger to the public referred to in paragraph 1 of this Notice ceases, whichever is the sooner.

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) Morris Walk Estate, SE7 PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Lovells who need to carry out the redevelopment of North and South of Morris Walk Estate.

2. The Order will come into operation on 21st October 2019 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 5 years. The duration of the Order may extend to this duration with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading. In Maryon Road From the Junction of Woodland Terrace to Woodhill, in Woodhill between Maryon Road and Prospect Vale, In Prospect Vale and Woodland Terrace from the junction of Woolwich Church Street to the junction of Maryon Road and Pett Street from the Junction of Woolwich Church Street.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via the placing of the appropriate signage. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
