Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice turns 25 this year. Help the organisation celebrate by taking part in its annual Big Bike Ride. Those taking part can opt to cycle either a 14-mile route from Woolwich to Greenwich and back, or a 28mile route from Erith to Greenwich and back. Both are flat with very few roads, making the charity bike ride suitable for all ages and abilities.

Oktoberfest gets a vegan makeover Following the success of last year’s Vegan Oktoberfest, Greenwich Market is offering a similarly beer-fuelled, plant-based celebration this October. What does an immersive Mamma Mia! experience entail?

A trip to the Greek island of Skopelos – where the first Mamma Mia! movie was filmed – and specifically the Nikos Taverna. Here, you’ll dine on a four-course feast while listening to your favourite ABBA tracks from the Mamma Mia! Movies sung live (plus some of the band’s b-side tracks only die-hard fans will be familiar with), while a love story unfolds around you.

There’s already a production of Mamma Mia! in the West End. How does this differ?

It differs in many ways. For starters, Mamma Mia! The Party is less of a musical, more an immersive, musical dinner.

Confused? Think cruise ship entertainment, or a live show in Disneyland. Secondly, this is not

the Mamma Mia! plotline you’re familiar with; The Party has its own fictional storyline, set in the ‘real world’ on the island of Skopelos, after Mamma Mia! the movie was filmed there. As such, it makes references to the cast, rather than the characters, as well as ABBA the band.

The plot itself follows Greek local Kostantina (Julia Imbach), whose relationship with British holidaymaker Adam (Aj Bentley) is put on hold when Kostantina’s father, taverna owner Nikos (Fed Zanni), refuses to give his consent.

Is it any good?

The singing and dancing is excellent, there’s no question about that. The setting is also stunning and looks every bit a square in a charming Greek town, complete with a fountain, olive trees and striking pink bougainvillea. The production has plenty of other tricks up its sleeve, making it a visual spectacle impress. But don’t come expecting a fully-fledged piece of theatre: without giving too much away, the plot is thin, hidden behind big smiles and wide-eyed wonder.

What about the food?

There’s a welcome drink of either ouzo or prosecco, after which drinks must be paid for – which seems a little steep, given the ticket price. Still, the feast itself is as hearty as you’d expect from an authentic Greek taverna. The meal begins with a mezze selection of bread, dips, olives and tomatoes.

Then come the starters proper: Greek salad, deliciously charred octopus and bite-sized squares

of spanakopita (spinach-filled pastries). Don’t be tempted to call for more bread, though, the main event is yet to come and it’s worth saving room for: thick slices of lamb kleftiko and beef flank, plus grilled vegetables, sweet potato wedges scattered with feta and bowls of pomegranate couscous.

By the time dessert comes – orange cake with yoghurt and mini pieces of baklava – you might find yourself so full you’re forced to hatch a plan to take it home.

ou’ve seen the stage production, you’ve watched the film and now, you can immerse yourself in the heart of the action: Mamma Mia! The Party, an immersive experience based on the film that was based on the play, itself built around the songs of Swedish pop sensations ABBA, has landed in London. The production – produced by ABBA’s own Björn Ulvaeus – comes to the O2 Arena in Greenwich from Stockholm in Sweden, where it’s been running since 2016. Having been, seen and sung-along, Holly O’Mahony reports on what to expect...

This sounds up my street… but how much do tickets cost?

Here’s the thing: tickets to Mamma Mia! The Party don’t come cheap. Prices start at £151.20 and no, they don’t offer discounts. So it’s really one for special occasions: hen parties, big birthdays, corporate outings.

But if you’re a serious fan of both ABBA and the Mamma Mia! films, and fancy treating yourself to a night revelling in your love of both, this immersive experience is as close as you can get to Skopelos without leaving London.

As of November 22, guests can travel by Party Express boat to the Mamma Mia! experience.

The bespoke Thames Clippers run from both the London Eye Pier (suitably close to Waterloo) and London Bridge City Pier on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The journey takes 35 minutes and guests can enjoy a glass of champagne as they glide.

News from the Royal Borough of Greenwich What was it like for you when you first moved here?

Since the very first time I came to London in ’68 so much has changed and the same goes for the borough. But the thing about it is, geographically and personally you can see that it’s a mixed area and the people are not hostile. I haven’t found any hostility. It’s a well balanced area to live in.

How would you describe Greenwich in a few words?

Friendly, open and I would not live anywhere else.

You are 86 and still working as a practice nurse, why is it so important for you to keep working?

I retired as a midwife at 65 as that was the retirement age at that time. But my friend recommended that I should look for a job as a practice nurse. So, I’ve continued working as a practice nurse since I qualified. I don’t know what retirement means!

But honestly, I don’t see it as working. I see it as giving back. I enjoy what I’m doing. I can’t walk down the street without meeting mothers of babies I’ve delivered or people who I’ve looked after. They in return give me their friendship and I am fulfilled. I’m not lonely, I get up in the morning I’ve got something to do. I don’t think of it as work, it’s communicating and giving back to the country that has given to me.

What changes have you seen in terms of nursing over the years you’ve worked?

Black History Month Hero This October for Black History Month, we are celebrating the vibrant and diverse communities in the borough. Greenwich would not be what it is without the many histories and futures within it.

Phyllis Iwowo is 86 years-old and has worked in the NHS and lived in Greenwich for 36 years - and is still working! She is a general practice nurse in two different practices in the borough and in 2017 she won the Royal Borough of Greenwich Lifetime Achievement Award, and the award for the South East London General Practice Nurse of the year.

We were lucky enough to catch her before she went to work, to talk to her about her life, her achievements and her thoughts about the borough.

There have been many changes in nursing, but the most important thing for me is to learn and adapt to new changes. The clientele today are inquisitive.

Social media and computers mean that people look up what might be wrong and so you need to work with them and not against them on that. The access to information has influenced their approach, and so you need to work with them to get the best for them and for the health system.

You got into swimming and aerobics at the age of 80, what drives you to stay so active?

They say that if you stay in one position for two hours you get tired. I have to remember how to sit and stand properly. I wouldn’t be able to do this without going to exercise classes.

At my age, I haven’t experienced any illnesses and I think exercise has helped with this.

You also make friends, we encourage each other. They ask me when I think I’m going to stop and I say, “I still fit in and I can still do both swimming and aerobics”, so I will keep doing it as long as I can.

You will be a role model for so many people, is that something you ever think about?

No, but one thing I can say, there are kids who are now nurses or health visitors I have met and encouraged. I have met some young people who have been doing a job they don’t enjoy, and I’ll ask, “How long are you going to do that for?”. I can say that there are now health visitors, nurses and teachers out there because I’ve said, “Go and look for something else and reach your potential.” In that way, I’m very grateful that I’ve been able to change the course of other people’s lives. I do encourage people to not sit there and say “this is enough”. It’s not enough.

The doors open if you knock, if you don’t knock, you won’t be able to go in.

What are you plans for the future?

What we have is here and now. I plan to go on as best as I can for as long as I can. Luckily for me, my health hasn’t given me concern. If I’m healthy and able to meet the requirements of my job, and my employers are happy with me then that’s all I need, I’m just plodding along. I’m not planning anything for the future.

I’m just getting on with it.

How long have you been living and working in Greenwich?

I first came to Greenwich in 1975 as a student midwife. I moved away after I married but then when my husband died in 1981, I came back again and worked in Greenwich District Hospital. I qualified as a midwife in this country when I was 46 and I decided to stay. I have lived and worked in Greenwich since 1983.

Circa No Future

Photography, male relationships, unemployment and the sea

OW Gallery’s annual Human Stories series is bound by a constant theme each year: the exhibition aims to ‘encourage a contemporary discourse on modern life and the human scale’, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The past three shows have explored concepts around urbanity, complexities of immigration and body image.

For the fourth iteration, curator Kaia Charles was clear on two things: she wanted the exhibition to focus on the ocean, and for it to be explored through the lense of an experimental photographer.

This led her to West Indian visual artist Nadia Huggins, whose photography forms the body of this year’s exhibition.

“I’ve researched the work of artists from the African and Caribbean diaspora for many years and Nadia’s work has always stood out,” says Kaia.

Nadia, who was born in Trinidad in 1984, is currently based in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Accompanying Nadia’s photography is a series of critical essays by writers Melanie Archer and William Abbott.

St Vincent and the Grenadines, the exhibition explores identity, memory and belonging, and navigates the boundaries between land and sea.

“The project was originally born out of my concerns surrounding the social issue of unemployment amongst young men in St Vincent and the Grenadines,” explains Nadia. “Originally, I wasn’t sure what form the project would take. It was only after I purchased an underwater camera and started documenting familiar experiences from my own youth whilst swimming that I organically found myself drawn to a group of boys swimming and jumping off the rocks.”

Nadia began working on Circa No Future back in 2014 and has been building on the project ever since. For the exhibition, Kaia was keen to show some of Nadia’s earlier work as well as new imagery she commissioned for it this summer just gone.

“The final selection considers not only the narrative, but also abstraction, texture and light to communicate the intimacy between photographer and subject,” explains Kaia. “The result is a beautifully emotive exhibition.”

For Nadia, the project has no definitive end point and so

is likely to be one she returns to. “I’m not sure when it will be complete, because there is always something new to uncover with each experience,” she says. “I was really interested in the concept of time travel.

These boys breaking through the surface felt like transcending into another place and time.” This even led her to think about what a sci-fi film set on the Caribbean might look like.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines was always an obvious choice for Nadia. It was home, after all.

But at the same time, she found the surroundings so familiar to her, it initially made it harder to see beyond everyday life to its underlying complexities.

“The issues were so close and familiar, but it forced me to envision a new way of seeing,” she explains. “I started photographing adolescent males because I was concerned with a much broader sense of certain social issues around unemployment and the performance of masculinity within the context of the Caribbean.”

Circa No Future is Nadia’s first solo show in the UK – something she is understandably chuffed about. “I’m very excited to finally be sharing these images with a

UK audience, especially those from the Caribbean diaspora,” she beams.

“So many different people have been following what I do online, but seeing photographs in the flesh is always a different experience. It will also be one of the few times I will be in a room with these images, so I’m curious to see the immediate response from people,” says Nadia, adding that she’s also thrilled for the boys in her photographs, who are happy to know their images are being seen by an international audience. “I hope it connects and resonates with people in a meaningful way and opens up a new perspective and understanding of the Caribbean experience,” she says.

Beyond the achievement of having her work on show, Nadia hopes her exhibition taps into a universal sensibility of our relationship with water, “which

spans location, age, gender and race”. “I really believe photographs have the power to deeply affect culture, and I hope from their own humble experiences these young boys are able to do that through each image,” she says. Kaia agrees: “Hopefully people visiting [the exhibition] feel immersed in the ethereal, otherworldly quality of the imagery,” she says. “Uppermost, I hope we collectively understand the tension between the awe and fragility of the ocean, like so many of our natural resources.”

Eat Vietnam, Deptford W

hen it comes to eating out, who doesn’t love pootling to their nearest neighbourhood gem at least once in a while? While there’s no exact definition for what a ‘neighbourhood gem’ is, most have a few things in common: they’re local (duh), probably tucked away off the high street, friendly, unpretentious and serve decent food at a reasonable price point.

Eat Vietnam in Deptford is all of those things, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Despite visiting on a Tuesday evening, usually a dud night for restaurants, Eat Vietnam was full by 7pm, save for one fourperson table. I was dining alone and when I asked for a table for one, the waiter’s eyes glanced hesitantly towards the four empty seats. Don’t worry, I said, I can wait for a smaller table. (To steal away the potential for three more customers would have been criminal.) It’ll be a five-minute wait, I was told, and mercifully, it was.

During that short wait, I thought about the various ingredients that make Eat Vietnam the successful, busy restaurant it clearly is. The decor is charming, if a little confused: Mediterranean tiles line the floors and hip exposed light bulbs hang from the ceiling, while pictured on the dark walls are scenes of Vietnamese lanterns. A vegan menu is scribbled in chalk there too, sure to appeal to local trendsters who have embraced a plant-based diet. The atmosphere was warm, the air

abuzz with chatter. It makes total sense that you’d want to come and be a part of it, whatever night of the week.

I didn’t stumble upon Eat Vietnam by accident. I’d heard good things from others who had been. I’d also swiped through pictures on their Instagram page, looking greedily at steaming bowls of pho (noodle soup), bún chả (grilled pork and noodles) and cà ri (coconut curry). As such, I came with high expectations.

According to Instagram, the restaurant’s signature dish is bánh khọt: savoury coconut pancakes filled with a tiger prawn. It was the dish’s status as the star of the menu that made me want to order it, but I was torn: these mini pancakes were listed (and priced) as a main, but I certainly didn’t fancy eating them instead of a bowl of bún chả, my all-time favourite. I tried to bargain with the waitress: could I have the bánh khọt as a starter? A side? No, I could do neither. Instead I ordered both the bánh khọt and bún chả.

Unsurprisingly, it was too much food.

Glad I was of my decision, though. The bánh khọt were, at best, inoffensive: overtly mushy in the centre and not a hint of coconut coming through. The dominant taste was unpleasantly one of the margarine they’d sizzled in.

Perhaps this dish appeals to some for nostalgic reasons, evoking memories of childhood? If so, this wistful fondness was off limits to my unfamiliar adult palate.

top did the best they could to boost the bland little pancakes, but if your palate is anything like mine, you’ll enjoy the bánh khọt best after drowning them in a full bowl of the accompanying nước mắm (Vietnamese fish sauce). As a final criticism, the dish is priced as a main but don’t be fooled: the seven mini cakes come with a disproportionate amount of salad and do not a full meal make. Try them, if you like – they’re the restaurant’s speciality, after all – but share them with your table then move on to the good stuff.

Speaking of which, the bún chả was just what the doctor ordered: generous slices of pork scorched and smoked on the grill; a salad of grated carrot, julienned cucumber, crispy lettuce, mint and coriander doused in a sweet, homemade dipping sauce; a dollop of vermicelli noodles; and a dusting

with peanuts. Yes, you’ll find yourself working around thick stalks of mint and coriander (I found myself pinning the stalks with a chopstick while picking off the leaves with my hand in a manner which would appal my mother). But who cares; this dish is authentic and scrumptious: sweet, sour, smoky, fresh and utterly moreish.

If you live in the vague vicinity of Deptford, Eat Vietnam is every bit a neighbourhood restaurant to have on your radar. While I won’t return for the bánh khọt, I’ll be back for everything else.

n Wednesday 18 September, the House of Lords played host as Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) organised an inaugural event to celebrate the achievements of its staff, partners and participants this year.

The CACT Awards, which was sponsored by Regular Cleaning, were hosted by Lord Grace CBE of Yarmouth, CACT’s Vice President and a former Chairman of the BBC and Executive Chairman of ITV. CACT also unveiled its brand new Annual Report at the event, which showed that it worked with 43,500 people in the past year, investing more than £5 million in the community over that period.

George Hogg, 17, won the Participant of the Year (under 18) category, after engaging with CACT’s Thanet Mentoring programme, after previously suffering with drug misuse.

Emile Allen won the Participant of the Year (over 18) award. The 72-year-old started attending CACT programmes late last year, following the passing of his wife. Emile

already attends CACT’s Extra Time Hub, Walking Football, Healthy Walks and men’s health social evening.

“I lost my wife last year; meeting all these people, it’s really great. I really enjoy myself and I can’t wait for the week: Monday to go to the men’s club, Tuesday to go and play football and Wednesday to go to the Extra Time Hub [for over 55s].”

The Sir Maurice Hatter Outstanding Contribution to the Community award went to Gavin Coates, a key Charlton Upbeats coach.

Gavin has coached the Down’s syndrome team to nine national titles in nine years and been instrumental in their progression.

Carl Krauhaus, CACT’s Head of Early Help & Prevention, said: “Gavin’s passion and commitment to the Charlton Upbeats has been superb and he has always gone above and beyond to ensure both participants and parents are happy.”
