A

ward-winning children’s author and illustrator Nick Butterworth is bringing his beloved alien, Q Pootle 5, to Greenwich’s Royal Observatory on 31 July.

Q Pootle 5 is a character who first appeared in his books nearly 20 years ago. Now it is a 52 episode series on CBeebies, which Nick produced with his son Ben Butterworth and wife Annette Butterworth, through their company Snapper Productions.

“These days you need more episodes because TV has a voracious appetite for material,” Nick told the Weekender.

When the book first came out in 2000, Nick said he was surprised when a producer at Disney approached him for the TV rights. “I was mystified,” he said. “Why would they want my little alien? I had an agent at the time for TV work, but in spite of her best efforts, negotiations ran into sand. I put it back on the shelf until my son came along and asked what was happening with Q Pootle 5,” he continued. “I was drawn into his enthusiasm for the project, and we started Snapper Productions.”

They hired top British animation studio Blue Zoo, and a small team of writers, including screenwriter Lee Pressman, who was head writer for Shaun the Sheep.

“When making a TV show the story is the most important thing.

The narrative has to drive what goes on screen in every respect,” said Nick. “Lee was so great, he understood this but also had the ability to think visually.”

The writer was “blown away” by the quality of the animation. “It was our first venture and we were shortlisted for a British Animation Award, although we were pipped

by Peppa Pig.” Now the series has been going for four years and is broadcast in over 90 countries. “There’s plenty of room for expansion. The main change when you air in other countries is the names; Planet Dave in the UK is Planet Fred in Germany.”

The brand has also secured a number of licensees including a range of TV tie-in books. When producing these picture books the writer and illustrator was keen to invest in quality. “I make them as high quality as I can” he said. “I wanted to respect the kids they are for and give them proper stories in the same vein as my other work.”

Starting off his life as a graphic designer, Nick, who now lives in north Essex in a “fabulous tiny village of 400 people,” says his lifelong fascination with space inevitably found its way into his work. “As a kid, I would go to bed and open my curtains in winter time and look at the stars. I’ve always found the night sky both

“When I stayed with my grandmother who lived down the road, if it was a dark night and there were stars out, she’d walk me home and sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. She even knew the second verse, which very few people do,” he continued.

After leaving school at 16, Nick went to work at a printers.

Eventually he got a job with a design consultant in London before going freelance with his own graphic design business.

“When I was in my early 30s, I decided I’d like to concentrate on illustration,” he said. His first book of nursery rhymes featured Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. “I realised if I wanted to control what I illustrate then I’d need to write the stories as well, so I had a go and fortunately it worked out, after a fairly steep learning curve.”

“I’ve always loved children and when my own children came along, I was inspired to get involved in children’s books,” he said. “Mine was a voice that resonated for parents and

children; we deliberately include things that parents will laugh at.”

“Whatever it is I’m doing, whether it’s Percy the Park Keeper or Q Pootle 5 or whatever, the emphasis is on friendship,” he said. “With Q Pootle 5, although set in space, they could easily be about a group of kids on earth. The group of friends tackle everyday problems and similar things that kids encounter. I start out drawing one character but it always turns out to be a group of friends.”

Old Royal Naval College marks 100 years of the Wrens 2017 MARKS one hundred years since the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) was founded, which signified the beginning of women being officially recruited into the Royal Navy.

Nicknamed “Wrens”, the women were recruited in the latter years of World War 1, so that men could be freed up to serve at sea.

The Service was disbanded at the end of the war but was reinstated in 1939 when the rumblings of World War 2 were felt, with the realisation that women would be needed to assist the Navy if war broke out again.

The Wrens served all over the world, with the majority on the Home Front but with thousands also stationed in overseas units, Recruiting under the banner of “Join the Wrens today and free a man to join the Fleet,” their responsibilities included driving, cooking, clerical work, operating radar equipment and planning naval operations.

By 1941, following the National Service Act, women could also join the Women’s Royal Naval Service, which would involve them directly with war work and the armed forces.

Greenwich’s Old Royal Naval College (ORNC) played a pivotal role in training up women who had been selected as Wrens Officers, training up 8,500 women from 1939-1945.

Last week, they launched an exhibition which captures the lives and experiences of women who served and trained in Greenwich from the First World War to the late 1970s, including interviews with sixteen former Wrens.

One of the sixteen is 79-year-old Yenn Lennard, who served with the Wrens from 1957-1961, as a Radar Plotter for two years and then as an Officer.

“I couldn’t make up my mind what I wanted to do. I thought it (joining the Wrens) would give me time to make up my mind,” said Yenn, who has been heavily involved in helping to put the exhibition together.

The aspiring Wren left her home in Bangor, Northern Ireland “I don’t remember feeling too worried about it. I had already travelled a little. I went to America on an exchange trip with the Girl Guides,” she said.

After two weeks “civilian” training in Fairfield she was given a choice – to walk away or sign up for four years service. She chose the latter.

“We did everything on the site.

We had dances, a cinema, we could play any kind of sport. I made so many friends, it was a very gregarious thing to belong to. It was a very good life.”

In 1959, Yenn was given the choice between relocating to a unit in Malta or going on to become a

Wren Officer.

“I chose what was best for my career, so trained to become an Officer,” said Yenn, who then relocated to Greenwich, to take up her training at the ORNC. “Becoming a Wren wasn’t that difficult but becoming a Wren’s officer was much more challenging.

In the first place, I’d joined up for four years just so I could make up my mind about what I was going to do but when I became an officer, I knew I was going to make a career out of it. It felt more important. I really wanted to do well because it was going to affect my career,” she said.

She spent three months training in Greenwich before, via Ovalton, was deployed to HMS Dryad in Portsmouth. Here, she would be joined by all of the Radar wrens from Haverfordwest – but not immediately.

“I was the only woman here until the other wrens arrived. To be honest, it wasn’t an awful lot of fun.

If I went to the bar at lunch I might be thought to drink too much, if I didn’t drink I might be snooty. If I went with the men I might spoil the fun, if I didn’t I was a bluestocking,” she said.

“I had to think about what I was doing for about three months. It was quite a big task considering I was 21. I did have a Senior Wren Officer in Portsmouth I could talk to about difficulties, though,” she said.

Yenn left the Wrens in 1961 when she married her husband, with women in that era commonly leaving the services once they married.

She maintained a link with the ORNC over the years, her husband a lecturer there and returned there as a volunteer in 2013, where she teaches visitors about history.

“My friend saw the advert and said ‘this would really suit you!’. I just thought – I have to go back there I just love being there so much!”

“Being in Greenwich was a really important part of my life. It started me off on my career and it’s where I met my husband.”

“It’s something my husband would have wanted me to do and it’s something I love myself. I have a unique experience having lived there. It’s important, particularly now that my husband isn’t around and my children are grown up. It keeps me thinking.”

The exhibition at the ORNC has been researched and curated by a team of volunteers from the University of the Third Age, in collaboration with former Wrens and the Old Royal Naval College.

It is open from Friday July 7 to Sunday December 3 and is open daily from 10am-5pm.

Catch Angels at the cinema T

he National Theatre’s current epic Angels in America is being streamed live at Greenwich Picturehouse; if you missed it on stage, catch it on screen, for a fraction of the price.

The two part, whopping eight hour play is set in ‘80s America in the midst of the AIDS crisis, during a conservative Reagan administration. This trend for lengthy plays seems to be the latest theatrical experiment, following on from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child where audiences attend a matinee and then return for part two in the evening. Beyond notoriety, I’m not sure why it’s necessary for anything to go on for this long. When I saw the play at the National, after the first threeand-a-half-hour stint, with another

four hours to go in Act II, I went home during the two hour break for a bath, washed my hair, and returned primed for the second part with a night serum on my face.

I felt a little disrespectful since the actors were practically ripping their hearts out of their chests on stage, and exhausting all of their theatrical resources to deliver hours of lengthy dialogue, and raw emotion. But, the last thing you want to be thinking about during curtain call is how long it’ll take to remove your make-up when you get home.

This restaging of Tony Kushner’s award winning play, opens with the first act: Millennium Approaches, which is spectacular: heartwrenching, camp, funny in a wittyJewish-New-York-sitcom kind of way, with innovative staging.

Andrew Garfield was absolutely

electric. I shouldn’t have been surprised; his film credits show discerning taste and versatile talent, from the Social Network, to Spiderman. An actor who survives being directed by Mel Gibson, is clearly no lightweight. But live in the flesh he is enigmatic; a wiry frenzy of physical presence, a flawless American accent, and enough twinkie attitude to power a Pride parade. His onstage boyfriend Louis Ironson, played by James McArdle, is less likeable but possibly more challenging a role, such is his character’s relatable cowardice and inconsistency.

Denise Gough’s long-suffering wife is well executed but tiring. It’s not a great character, but I suppose she needs to be there for context.

Nathan Lane is everything you want from Nathan Lane: a brash, dramatic, bellowing Broadway

star, and the personification of moxie. His character, hotshot lawyer Roy Cohn, is like if William Shatner’s Boston Legal hotshot leading lawyer Denny Crane had a lovechild with Liberace. Suited and booted, strangling a telephone, and bouncing razor sharp dialogue off withering counterparts, he is a force to be reckoned with.

I was wary of the second part: Perestroika because my knowledge of Communist Soviet Union is sketchy at best. The four hours that followed were as bamboozling as anticipated, as characters wandered into the afterlife, haunted by a terrifying angel with very visually effective angel wings, controlled by a team of talented puppeteers. The weird supernatural characters get really weird, and the disappointing characters get more disappointing.

So perhaps it’s an allegory for real life? Everything bad gets worse?

If you start off not liking someone you’re really going to hate them by the end? By the end, although the moral triumphs are encouraging, but you’ve kind of lost interest. In everything.

The actors put on a stellar performance, the whole production was epic, but I don’t think eight hours of theatre is the right dose for anyone.

There are no second acts in American lives. If only this were true of Angels in America.

If you’ve ever told your little ones about the little magical people who live at the end of the garden, you may want to wing your way to Ruxley Manor garden centre, where you will find a land of fairies, pixies and mystery.

The centre has launched Pixie Manor, a magical forest where you can meet fairies pixies, discover hidden fairy doors, decorate your own wand and learn a magic oath from a Fairy Godmother before receiving a special gift.

The Pixie Manor is suitable for children aged 3 to 8, but parents are welcome to bring children of other ages at their own discretion.

Pixie Manor runs from July 15 until September 3, and costs £9.99 per child with one free accompanying adult (the money includes a wand a gift from the Fairy Godmother).

Additional adults cost £1.99.

FREE FOR HALL

Under 18s can get free entry to the Painted Hall Ceiling Tours from July 24 until September 1.

Youngsters aged 6 to 17 can take in London’s largest painted ceiling, which was painted between 1707 and 1726 by Sir James Thornhill, the first British artist to be knighted.

Visitors can ascend a 60 foot observation desk to see the huge Painted Hall, which is undergoing a major conservation project.

Youngsters must be accompanied by an adult.

emember those old school pubs where cheese and biscuits would be set out on the bar at Sunday lunchtimes to soak up the ale?

Then, after a few more beers, the roast potatoes would make an entrance? Well the Summerfield is a pub just like that where we were fortunate enough to pop in on the day the landlord Joe Courtney was celebrating his first year in charge with a bouncy castle, face painting, sweets for the kids and a £5 BBQ, so the atmosphere on this pleasant Sunday was very much familyorientated.

Me, Nina and our young charge Haydn had come for lunch so swerved the cheese and biscuits in order not to spoil our appetites, but the roast taters looked so, so good they could not be ignored. Just seeing those hot, crispy beauties I knew resistance was futile. We plunged in and myself and Haydn made a promise that Nina must make similar crispy roasties for us in the very near future.

While we sat back enjoying award-winning Italian lager and excellent Sauvignon Blanc, a young man crooned his way through the best of the American Songbook, throwing in one or two Matt Monros for good luck. Mr Courtney, a

The afternoon was getting better and better pleasant, amiable young man talked us through the BBQ offerings, revealing that someone would have to die if the recipe to the Summerfield Sauce ever left his lips, and how feta cheese is already blended into the burger so that it oozes when cooked. I was salivating already.

You can see that the Summerfield is all freshly furbished in modern colours and looking good, and with a really good buzz about it.

Joe and his team appear to be working at full pace to get the drinks and food out quickly to the customers who didn’t seem to be at all worried about any time constraints. Between delivering burgers to tables Joe fetched us more drinks and told of his plans

to have a Gourmet Burger menu in the pub on August 1st, for burgers served daily, plus new exciting things happening in the beer garden. Intriguing.

The Summerfield Burger was stacked up high in front of Nina who stared in amazement. I had a small portion of it and felt its might - It is not something you can eat and still look genteel. It’s a messy eat unless you want to take it on with a knife and fork, and they just ain’t happening, is it?

Haydn’s normal burger looked

just as large, but without the extra cheese blended in with the minced beef, and I had the Cumberland Sausage Baguette which I was pretty much indifferent when I ordered, but once it came and I tasted it I knew that sausage was one of Cumberland’s best.

The BBQ was a special event to mark the anniversary but I reckon when the restaurant is up and running soon you will have to get in nice and early if you’re looking for Sunday lunch. The burgers will then come with fries and salad and be around the £10 mark.

The Summerfield has already been up for awards for the progress and change it has made in its one year, and I predict great things for the next twelve months.
