BARGE IN The 42nd Thames Historic Barge Rowing event is making a splash with 12 teams rowing seven miles from Greenwich to Westminster.

The race starts at 1:30pm, and finishes around 3:30pm, with teams of between four and six members steering and rowing 30 ton barges from Greenwich peninsula to Westminster Bridge.

Eltham’s biggest outdoor event, the Avery Hill Park’s Family Fun Day is a free outing for all. Run as part of the Royal Greenwich Parksfest programme, and organised by the Friends of Avery Hill Park, the attractions include a main stage featuring MakeaNoise choir (12 noon), All the Arts theatre group (1pm), Loopy Lou's dance school (2pm), and Rock Choir (3pm). Outside the Winter Garden is the University of Greenwich Big Band at 2pm.

The Ferryman

D

ave Jessop, Mate on the historic Woolwich Ferry, the James Newman, was born by the river in Temeraire Street, Rotherhithe. The street is named after the Fighting Temeraire, the celebrated gunship that fought valiantly in Nelson's fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. 33 years after that victory, decaying and no longer in use, she was towed up the Thames to be broken up at a Rotherhithe shipyard.

In his painting the Fighting Temeraire, JMW Turner depicted the last voyage of the old war hero as a ghostly ship being pulled to its final resting place by a little steam tug. Round about the same time Dave Jessop’s greatgrandfather was apprenticed into a career on those very same Thames

tugs. The family is now into its seventh generation of watermen, with Dave’s cousin’s son Tom apprenticed to the Waterman’s Company, the latest to follow the family tradition.

I was invited aboard the James Newman to discuss Mr Jessop’s life and career. Built in 1963, the ferry was named after a former Mayor of Woolwich. The other ferries, built and put into service at the same time, are the John Burns and the Ernest Bevin.

Burns was an MP and trade unionist who was integral to the Great Dock Strike of 1889; Bevin was a founding leader of the TGWU, one of Britain’s biggest unions. Back in 1963 the Thames was alive with working wharfs and docks, and the unions were strong and took care of their members, hence the ferries being named after men with working class roots and trade union

Now, after so long in service, these old vessels will soon be replaced and there is a campaign to have one of the new ferries named after 19-yearold apprentice Ben Woollacott, a fifth generation waterman tragically killed while working on the Ernest Bevin.

“We’ve already got thousands of signatures,” I’m told.

I observed an efficient crew on the James Newman, working in their individual roles directing vehicles and passengers, but with a team goal: to get the cargo safely across. In the staff cabin there was a lot of banter and laughter, giving the impression of a happy band of brothers.

Dave Jessop started his apprenticeship at 15 after leaving Paragon School, but his love for the work began much earlier. He remembers: “me dad took me a work with him when I was five and I fell in love with the river… After that, for me, it was just boats, boats, boats.”

His apprenticeship took six years but, “we are all boatmasters now,” he says while standing at the helm, nonchalantly navigating his way across the Thames merely by manipulating three small handles on a console, explaining that the Waterman and

I was hoping to find him at a huge ship’s wheel, bellowing out commands such as “hard to starboard” to crew members. No such luck.

The waterman’s area extends from Beckton to Putney these days but in his early years on tugs and sailing barges Dave could be on the river anywhere between Gravesend and Teddington.

He waves out to a friend at the helm of a Thames Clipper as it waits for the ferry to pass. “I worked all the tidal Thames,” he says, “even the non-tidal bit to Walton on Thames. Also the river Swale, and the Medway as far up as Aylesford.” I could see this man with the river running through his veins could have talked all day about tugs and boats and the characters he has had the pleasure to work alongside.

Dave Jessop loves the Thames and is saddened at how the work declined when the major London docks closed.

He tells me that with work beginning on the new Thames Tideway Tunnel, the ‘Super Sewer,” there should be more work on the river, making it a viable career option for young people.

He stops to phone the car and passenger numbers through to the office and explains that this is a rule since the Marchioness disaster of 1989 when nobody knew how many people were on board the stricken vessel, and were therefore unaware how many passengers were actually missing.

This is his 26th year on the Woolwich Ferry, a service that has been free to use since the 19th century and which cannot be levied without changing an 1885 Act of Parliament. He explains how each day and each trip is different due to tides, weather conditions or the vehicles on board. High-sided lorries, he informs me, “are like having a couple of sails set… You get blown sideways.” Dexterously working the handles while continuously checking round 360 degrees through the panoramic windows, he countered any differences in sailing conditions created by the lorries for another smooth and effortless trip.

Dave Jessop knows the Thames and river work inside out, and is proud of the waterman tradition he has carried on for his family but, as almost half a century working on the river looms, I detected a feeling of sadness and a longing for another time, a time when London was a major port and the Thames a busy, bustling, thriving place of work.

After a quick turnaround we set off on the return journey. “In 1969 when I started on the boats there were 4200 lighterman,” began the man with the look of the Bounty’s Captain Bligh in his eye, “but in 1991 I was one of the last 19 quay lightermen.” It went quiet in the little cabin on the bridge at the top of the ferry. Everything had been said in that one sentence.

With unions pretty much powerless now any chance of mutiny has long gone, and it is evident that this ferryman misses the passing of those days of camaraderie and strong comradeship. Even so, as he pulled back into Woolwich for the umpteenth time that day, his final words to me were, “I’d do it all again, every day of it.

I love it.”

A VICTORIAN confidence trickster whose exploits would leave Del Boy and Arthur Daley speechless is the fascinating subject of a comedy drama having its world premiere at Greenwich Theatre.

Chinese Whispers, written and directed by local actor Ian Lindsay, tells the story of Sir Edmund Trelawny Backhouse who, among many other things, sold non-existent battleships to the famous John Brown’s shipyard. He also donated eight tons of Chinese manuscripts to the Bodleian Library at Oxford University, but it’s widely believed they were forgeries by Backhouse, who spoke several languages including Chinese.

“I think what Backhouse did was awful,” said Ian Lindsay, “but he was an amazing scholar. There was nothing glamorous about him but there was this brilliance of the mind. When he arrived in Peking he went to The Times office to get a job. It was run by an Australian called Morrison, who was the sort of Murdoch of the time. He said he had no jobs but changed his mind after Backhouse produced a recommendation from the Prime Minister, Lord Salisbury.

“Backhouse was a complete

fantasist who spoke of an affair with Oscar Wilde, but I don’t know where his bizarre life came from, I really don’t. He was from a Quaker family and didn’t get on with his parents.

He went to school at Winchester and perhaps there was some kind of rebellion in there somewhere.”

Seventy-eight-year-old Ian is best known as George in Men Behaving Badly but after that it is more a question of what he didn’t appear in across five decades of acting – from Z Cars and The Bill to EastEnders, Coronation Street and Benidorm, and films that included Mike Bassett: England Manager, The Tall Guy and Little Dorrit. He is the best selling author of How to Kill a Yob. Ian tells the Weekender about his getting sent down from Oxford University: “I had an exam one morning, tracing back the history of the Anglo Saxons, but I couldn’t answer one single question, so I just wrote my name at the top of the paper and went out to contact the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) for an interview... I turned up at Gower Street and expected a queue but found I was being seen privately.

as well, so I believe in the old boys’ failure network!”

A loss to academia has been a gain to the world of theatre.

After completing the script Ian gave a copy of Chinese Whispers to co-producer Peter Shaw in a Greenwich pub and was told they should put it on.

“Peter’s been wonderful,” he

declares. “He’d worked with James Haddrell at Greenwich Theatre before and we both knew what a great job James has done building the theatre up. I’m very excited.”

Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra to debut CD at Mozart festival THE PHILHARMONIC Chamber Orchestra (PCOL) of London is launching its debut CD to close the Greenwich Mozart festival.

Margaret Cornils Luke is performing both of Mozart's concertos for flute and orchestra in this concert. Written in 1778 in the 'gallant' style for which Mozart is so popular, these concertos are energetic, melodious and

Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G minor is amongst his finest in the genre and is also one of his most popular works. It is, unusually for Mozart, in a minor key (this being one of only two symphonies Mozart wrote in a minor key), but despite this it possesses great energy from the start.

In 2015 the PCOL recorded works for flute and orchestra with

solo flautist Margaret Cornils Luke for US label Centaur Records. The new CD that was released in March and will be available to buy at this concert (where Margaret and Chris are signing CDs).

Maureen's Footloose at the Churchill

Don't miss this big and noisy Wind in the Willows

MAUREEN NOLAN doesn’t do much singing with the Sisters these days but is constantly treading the boards in the West End or on a UK tour.

‘I do a lot of theatre, I love it. I absolutely love Blood Brothers and acting in it is one of my all time favourite things to do,’ says the star.

Maureen’s latest acting role is as Vi Moore in the legendary Footloose alongside Gareth Gates, and she was happy to take time out from her busy schedule to talk to the Weekender about her character and the play. ‘Footloose is about a Reverend who has banned dancing and music in a little town in America,’ begins the actress. ‘I play Vi Moore, the Reverend’s wife, and am caught between my husband and our very rebellious 17-yearold daughter.’

‘The tour is going really well,’ she tells me with a smile. ‘This is such a fantastic show to be part of, you can’t help but like it. As it’s based on a true story it has a bit of substance, but it is also a very lighthearted 80s musical, with all the songs people know and love from the film, such as Holding Out For A Hero and Let’s Hear It For The Boy.’ Maureen reveals that one of the songs she sings, ’Can You find It In Your Heart’ , was written especially for the stage show.

gnore the reviews that sulk about this version of Wind In The Willows not adhering to the atmosphere of Kenneth Grahame’s book because, do you know what, not everyone had an upbringing where that book had to be read and will not have their views coloured by it.

Some of us were raised on Dennis the Menace and Desperate Dan and other comic heroes and feel all the better for it, thank you very much.

So buy a ticket, steal a ticket, borrow a ticket. Get one for your mum, your brother, your friend, your wife, and all your exes. Get tickets for husbands, lovers, aunts and uncles and even the cousin you don’t like, but do get a ticket for this new overblown, non-stop, big and noisy Wind in the Willows.

The set, framed by drooping weeping willow leaves, is fantastic; the songs are great, the costumes are brilliant; the choreography is spot on and the show even makes Rufus Hound

The story is known to most and is recreated with words here by Julian Fellowes. But it is lyricist Anthony Drewe who gets my nod of thanks for rhyming ‘Divs’ with ‘Lives’ for the nasty weasels’ song as they take up squatters’ rights at Toad Hall. Genius.

There are car thefts, joyrides, jail breaks, manhunts - all perfect fare for the young and young at heart.

What plans do you have after Footloose ends, I asked. ‘I would love to do some TV; my sister was in both Brookside and The Bill, it is definitely something I would like to do. But for now Footloose is keeping me busy!

There are a couple of standout performances, with Simon Lipkin’s Rat coming across rather well in my opinion, but all the main characters did excellent work in making this show such an entertaining one.

homas Waugh has lived in Walworth and Bermondsey all his life and his thrillers, featuring former paratrooper and hitman Michael Devlin, are set in South London.

His latest book is Darkness Visible, a page-turning novella, in the vein of Graham Greene's "entertainments" and Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels. Thomas Waugh, in the character of Michael Devlin, has created an engaging hero, or antihero, for our time.

Thomas, tell us a little about your main character, Michael Devlin. I'm sure I've not been the only reader to sympathise with him for part of the time and then

be appalled by his actions within the turn of a page.

A friend of mine said the other day that Devlin reminded him of Jack Reacher and John Wick. He's an avenging angel, who's far from angelic. He's a killer, who wants to retire. But he can't quite leave his past, or nature, behind. But, more than guilt or anger, Devlin's life is shaped by grief for his late wife.

Nothing can quite fill the hole in his existence. Not work, drinking or a new relationship. For all of the action and plot twists in the book, Darkness Visible is also a character study of an ex-soldier and widower. And you are right in that you are not the only reader conflicted by how they feel about Devlin. But I consider that to be a good thing.

The areas of Walworth and Bermondsey feature heavily in the books. Did you include them just because it's your local area, or were there other reasons?

I've lived in Walworth and Bermondsey all my life. I attended St Michael's School on Jamaica Rd. I still have pie and mash in Manze's once a fortnight (at the very least).

And I drink in local pubs. There was little extra research I had to do for the books, especially compared to writing historical fiction. But I hope I wasn't just being lazy when I decided to set the stories in South

East London. As much as parts of Bermondsey have been gentrified over the years it still has its links to the underworld and crime. Like Devlin, it can't wholly escape its past. Or it doesn't want to. I remember how, years ago, "In the Dock," used to be one of the most popular pages in the Southwark News. People are attracted to, as well as repulsed by, crime. Some of the characters have a black and dry sense of humour which readers from South London will appreciate too.

As well as being page-turning thrillers the books are quite literary as well. Do you have any literary heroes?

Lots. Too many to mention them all. But the aim, when I started writing the first book, Nothing to Lose, was to write a contemporary thriller in the mould of Graham Greene. Devlin can't quite escape his Catholicism, as well as his past. I had the fortune to meet Gilda O'Neill and Martina Cole many years ago too. They are to be admired, both as writers and people. It was also quite fun to create a soundtrack for the books.

As well as quotes by the likes of Graham Greene and Kierkegaard, you will also find snippets of lyrics by Bob Dylan - and Mariah Carey - in Darkness Visible. Like

London, the book is a melting pot of influences.

really don’t know where to start with this so I’ll begin at the end. This was probably the best Japanese meal I have ever had. Getting to that conclusion, though, was a different matter.

After being shown to a table on the third level (fourth floor is the karaoke bar) Nichole took our drinks order and offered to choose the dishes for us. She soon had us salivating as she gave us a rundown on what we could look forward to, so we quickly agreed.

We could see the sashimi chef working busily at the sushi bar, and smiled at each other. Forty minutes later our drinks arrived.

Ten minutes after that a first course of fish cheeks (Namban Zu) in rice vinegar and something else that created an amazing sweet and sour sensation came. Then it went quiet again and we could only watch as beautifully prepared plates came out of the open kitchen and passed us by for other diners. My pint of Kirin was almost gone and Nina’s Green Fog (a cocktail based around gin, sake, cucumber apple and lime) had been drunk.

Then what looked like a blancmange dessert was placed between us to share. “Hiyayakko,” said our server. My eyes must have said Help as he followed up with “Cold tofu with ginger and

spring onion.” My eyes must’ve said something else on hearing that.

My heart sank. Tofu! This was going from bad to worse. This was the eve of Nina’s birthday and I wasn’t sure she was going to like the D&G perfume I’d bought her, so needed her birthday week to get off to a good start.

Well the tofu was the best thing since sliced, er, tofu. A glass of Sauvignon Blanc came and quenched Nina’s thirst, and before we could discuss how nice that tofu dish was a platter of the most exquisite sushi and sashimi landed on the table. It truly was a thing of beauty and as the waiter talked us round the plate my eyes widened

and my mouth dropped open. Now we knew why we had waited so long. Now it all made sense. Now we understood the concentration on the sashimi chef’s face while he created this masterpiece. The Mango Dragon centrepiece looked and tasted fantastic. And such is the attention to detail it even came with Kitcho’s own home-made soy sauce.

Writing this at 7.30am the following day my mouth is watering as I think about it all again. We worked our way through this culinary work of art like excited schoolchildren, talking eagerly about each little thing of wonderment. As we neared the finish Nichole came and told us

that the ‘main course’ would be next. What? Wasn’t that the main course?

Another beer and more wine was needed to assist in the taking down of the Wasabi Prawns - I can’t even write about these without dribbling so I won’t bother - and the Pork Gyoza (Dumplings).

We struggled with these two dishes but could see an end in sight. The prawns came in sets of five, which would usually cause a row over who gets the odd one, but Nina was done right in so I claimed it for my own. To the victor the spoils, and all that. But as I crunched into the prawn’s crispy batter I was hit with a bowl of Wafu Yaki Niku (Stir fried beef in spicy sauce) and rice, promptly followed

by Tori Teri (Teriyaki Chicken).

“You’re having a laugh, ain’tcha?”

I pleaded as I tried to get stuck into the scrumptious chicken with delectable burnt bits. But I could not keep it up and Nina had already surrendered. “Could you please box the rest up for us to take home?”

So, dear readers, that really was the best Japanese meal I’ve ever had. The Kitcho master chefs working quietly in the kitchen turn out fantastic dishes, one after another. Nichole told us that regulars call in their sashimi order early and arrive just before it’s

ready so they don’t have to wait.

And that is a great tip.

Now I’m going to finish off that spicy beef and chicken teriyaki for breakfast before Nina wakes up and starts moaning about her birthday present. I’ll make amends by taking her to Kitcho for lunch!

CULTURE FEST RETURNS

Greenwich World Cultural Festival is returning to Eltham for its ninth year, with a free day of dance, music, theatre and circus.

The festival will give you free access to the grounds of Eltham Palace (but not entry into the Palace), and the chance to explore entertainment from around the world.

The event is from 12.30pm and 5pm on Sunday, July 16.

Summer fun in the borough’s parks continue this week, with a whole host of events for the family. Sunday, July 16 alone has four festivals;

KARATE AT THE FAYRE

LIVE IN PLUMSTEAD

Free music festival Plumstead Live!, on Winn Common, Winn’s Common Road, Plumstead SE18 1PG, has a great line-up. Ouchas Anam is a group of male and female vocalists, with fiddle, whistle, flute and bodhran playing; Los Musicos will bring the rhythm and songs from Latin America and the Caribbean; the big blue will be getting you dancing on the grass; and The Hit Men UK, who have toured with some of the biggest names in the business, will also be playing.

The event runs from 3pm to 8pm.

Karate demonstrations, a city farm, volley ball and family games can all be enjoyed at the Summer Fayre in Southern Park on Greenwich Peninsula, this Saturday, July 15.

People are invited to bring along their own picnics to the event, which runs from 1pm to 10pm, but there is also lots of food from different stalls available. There will also be music on a stage from bands and musicians including Los Dawson’s.

There will also be football skills, ceramics and bouncy castles.

Summer Sundays in Well Hall Pleasaunce, Well Hall Road, SE9 6SZ, continue. This Sunday Suzie Bailey will be performing at the event, which runs from 3pm to 5pm.

New ₤100 million Ikea for Greenwich

T

he UK’s most sustainable Ikea store is being put together in Greenwich.

The council has just granted planning permission for a 33,000 metre store in Millennium Way Retail Park, which is due to open in late 2018.

The Swedish furniture giant’s new store, on Bugsby’s Way, will create around 500 jobs locally with full and part time positions in sales, customer relations, interior design, and food services.

Plans for the store reveal a rooftop pavilion with a community area, a biodiversity garden, multi -functional spaces, a market hall, showroom and warehouse, as well as a restaurant, crèche, staff facilities and customer service areas.

Sustainability manager for the UK and IE, Hege Saebjornsen, says IKEA is dedicated to having a positive impact on the environment.

“The Greenwich store will be the company’s most sustainable store to date,” he said. “It will include environmental features such as rainwater harvesting, PV solar

panels and will meet a BREEAM Excellent’ Certification Rating.”

All IKEA stores generate electricity from PV panels on the

roof and aim to be as sustainable as possible, he continued. “However, more importantly we have designed a store in Greenwich with customer

and community in mind, a place where people can meet, learn, shop and share.”

IKEA Greenwich will be the

22nd store in the UK and Ireland.

Construction is due to begin at the end of this year, with the store planned to open in late 2018.

The effect of the Order will be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in Woolwich Road, between Victoria Way and Farmdale Road, and from entering or exiting a road specified in column 1 of the Schedule to this Notice at its junction with the road specified in relation thereto in column 2 of that Schedule.

2. The above restrictions will only apply at such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by the placing of the appropriate traffic signs.

3. Whilst the closures are in operation, vehicular access to properties affected by these works will be maintained wherever possible subject to the extent and operations of the works. The alternative route for diverted vehicles effected by the closure of the eastbound carriageway of Woolwich Road will be via Blackwall Tunnel Southern Approach, Shooters Hill Road, South Circular Road and Woolwich Church Street and by the closure of the westbound carriageway of Woolwich Road will be via Anchor and Hope Lane, Bugsby’s Way and Peartree Way. 4. The Order will come into force on 17th July 2017 and will continue in force for up to 18 months, or until the works have been completed, whichever is the sooner. However, it is expected that the works will take two weeks to complete.

ROYAL BOROUGH OF GREENWICH The Greenwich (Waiting and Loading Restriction) (Amendment No. *) Order 201* 1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) proposes to make the above-mentioned Order under section 6 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

2. The general effect of the Order would be to provide double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions in the lengths of street referred to in the Schedule to this Notice and make certain other changes to bring the Order in line with the existing on-street layout.

3. A copy of the proposed Order and other documents, including maps, giving more detailed particulars of the Order are available for inspection during normal office hours until the end of six weeks from the date on which the Order is made or, as the case may be, the Council decides not to make the Order, at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ. 4.
