Jeremy Vine at Blackheath Halls grapples with the thorny issues

hat the hell is going on? Broadcaster Jeremy Vine is looking for the answer to the question on everyone’s mind, writes Laura Burgoine...

With more than 30 years at the BBC, Jeremy has presented Newsnight, Crimewatch, Eggheads and Points of View as well as his daily Jeremy Vine Show on BBC Radio 2, the UK’s most listened to radio news programme. Now he’s coming to Blackheath Halls to talk about what he’s learned.

In a world overloaded with news –real and fake, Jeremy’s show aims to make sense of a world that increasingly makes no sense at all. “It’s a great time to be a journalist,” he said. “I guess we’ve all decided to do our own thing and we’re voting our own way and you’ve got Trump in America and the Brexit riddle...You cannot tell which way the ocean liner is going.”

"In a way it’s a fantastic time to be alive, but it’s also very challenging" Robert Mugabe and strutted his stuff as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Jeremy came up with the idea for this show after calculating that he had taken 25,000 calls on his Radio 2 show.

“I worked out that I’ve taken about eight calls a day, on five shows a week, for 16 years. And I wanted to reflect on: what are they all saying? What does it all add up to?”

“We’ve become difficult to govern,” Jeremy said. “Experts have got it 100 percent wrong.

With the internet and the fast sharing of stories and forums, if you’ve got Lyme disease you’re just as likely to go on a forum as

you are to go to a doctor.”

“In a way it’s a fantastic time to be alive but it’s also very challenging,” he continued. “MPs have never been at a lower ebb.

Once upon a time, the most important person in a town was the MP.” Working as BBC’s Africa Correspondent during the late ‘90s, the reporter has seen the industry change dramatically as a result of the internet. “I think there is a real concern that we’ve shrunk away from news that’s hard to get to,” he said. “That’s always been an issue. No one covered the war in Congo which claimed the lives of a million

people.”

Tech is a big part of this change, Jeremy said. “When the CIA went into Bin Laden’s complex and killed him, the first ten hours of film was from ordinary people on their mobiles. Then the journos arrived and were too late.”

Today, people have more outlets than ever. “The good side is that people who listen to my show on Radio 2 feel empowered to really be able to tell their stories now in a way they never could, and they’re taken very seriously,” Jeremy said. “On the downside you’ve got crazy science and public shaming. Anti-vaccine is a thing I was covering this

week. If you want to sit in an echo chamber, you can convince yourself vaccines cause autism.”

Jeremy is touring this show around the country with “ten or twelve shows in the diary” at the moment. “I’m enjoying the chance to get out and see people; it’s so refreshing. I rarely get outside the studio. It’s nice to meet your audience,” he said.

“People always say to me “what’s going on?” and I say “you’re going on.”

The journalist is enjoying being live in front of an audience.

“I suppose it is performance.

Journalists think we’re not front and centre but my brother is a stand-up comedian and my sister’s an actress so I suppose there is some desire to go on stage,” he said. “Perhaps somewhere in my Mum or Dad there’s a repressed show-off.”

ased on the true life story of England Cricketing star Chris Lewis, the Long Walk Back is a stirring drama about a sporting icon’s incredible journey, writes Laura Burgoine...

Months after retiring from a career where he was named England International Cricketer of the Year, Chris was arrested for smuggling cocaine and sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Covering his stratospheric rise to fame and subsequent struggle with being incarcerated, the play is touring all over the UK throughout April. Directed by Dougie Blaxland, the production includes a post-show Q&A with Chris Lewis and RoughHouse Theatre Director, Shane Morgan.

cocaine into the UK. Beginning with his arrest at Gatwick Airport in 2008 and an attempted suicide on his first night in custody, The Long Walk Back charts the extraordinary journey that took Lewis from the brink of despair to a profound moral awakening.

In Jonathan Church’s revival, the two brothers, Victor and Walter, one a New York cop nearing retirement, the other a successful surgeon, meet for the first time in sixteen years to sell their family furniture stored in the attic of a condemned New York brownstone. Overseeing the psychological battlefield is the wily veteran appraiser, Gregory Solomon, and Sara Stewart as Esther Franz, Victor’s wife.

Esther comes up and they soon talk of how their wasted lives have all been connected to this place and the dead man - Victor’s father - who once lived there. They pull apart their marriage and their characters until the dealer turns up to make an offer for everything: the furniture, their memories, their lives, and their integrity.

It is in this first half that Miller shows he can do comedy. Suchet’s hamming up of the Jewish dealer almost has Coyle’s cop corpsing more than once and the audience loved it. They are very obviously enjoying these roles and are having a good time on stage.

As they dance around each other Victor wants a price while Solomon wants to talk about everything else other than a price while hinting at how used furniture is not worth so much… When they finally agree on

It almost became a revelation too far and this wordy, shouty second act sometimes became too confusing to keep up. The message was clear, though: the price of making the mistake of keeping family secrets was losing a brother.

It's all going swimmingly

Initially, Francis’ company worked with people who had a variety of mental and physical disabilities within Greenwich.

“Now we welcome clients from outside the borough,” Francis said.

Currently based at the Greenwich Leisure Centre, classes operate on a one-toone or one instructor per two student ratio, depending on the needs of the individual.

working with Olympic and national standard coaches, set up her swim school after being frustrated by the lack of local resources allocated to parents and carers in the Greenwich and Lewisham area, particularly about the lack of swimming opportunities for children and adults with a disability.

“Those few courses that were advertised were often oversubscribed, at inconvenient times or lacked the mobility training to see any real results from week to week,” Francis said.

Francis previously set up a swim school in Lewisham with

Signal Family Support. “These experiences have helped me to form my own philosophies and coaching style that has led to my success within this field,” Francis said. “I wanted a swim school that embodied this style of teaching but also allowed coaches who work for me to develop their own too.”

There is a shortage of swimming teachers with experience in working with children and adults with mobility issues and learning difficulties. Francis has also struggled to find teachers willing or interested in taking on these jobs.

“I founded All4oneSwimming

to bring together teachers and coaches that had a burning passion for broadening minds, exploring new ways of teaching those with a disability and exchanging ideas and philosophies,” she said.

All4oneSwimming has adapted the widely recognised Amateur Swimming Association's Learn to Swim programme because Francis recognises that not every swimmer is able to achieve perfect criteria within each stage.

“No two swimmers are the same even though they may be diagnosed with the same condition and so it is

paramount to us to create bespoke training programmes,” she said.

“Freedom in the water can lead to a reconnection with the world around them.”

All4oneSwimming offers the chance to learn a new skill and get fit. “But most importantly it empowers a disabled person and gives them the confidence to grow and achieve other goals in their life outside the pool,” Francis said.

The swim school now runs on Saturdays between 3pm and 6pm.

I

t was a note from Crossness Engines which reminded me that Joseph Bazalgette would be 200 years old on 28th March.

They were planning to have a party!

I don’t know how many people recognise the name – Bazalgette – because he is considerably more famous than many of the ‘great engineers’. He was of course the man who built the London sewage system –and the Thames Embankment. He is closely associated with the setting up of London wide Government. We have various original structures of his in Greenwich, most of them still functioning.

Joseph Bazalgette –like Brunel – came from a family of immigrants, from France. He was born in Enfield and trained as an engineer, working on railways and drainage projects.

In 1849 he began work for the Metropolitan Commission of Sewers – which covered a great deal of what is now Greater London. It had been set up because there were very real and urgent public health issues, not the least of them successive outbreaks of deadly cholera.

This article is about Bazalgette’s work in what is now the Borough of Greenwich – so we need to focus more on our area than London as a whole. In most places sewage just went into streams flowing down to the Thames, which is where it ended up. Greenwich itself was probably not as bad as some other places. The Palace and later the Royal Hospital did have some proper drainage systems from the buildings – but of course they in the end it all went into the River. There was also a Greenwich Commission of Sewers – and I have spent a lot of time looking at their records in the London Metropolitan Archive – but they were really mainly concerned with drainage of the marshland areas, along Deptford Creek and Greenwich Peninsula (then called Greenwich Marsh, of course).

There had been a Royal Commission in 1847 into sewage disposal in London and it was concluded that a London wide body was needed to deal with the problem and as a result a co-ordinating London Commission was set up – which included the Greenwich based body. They undertook various surveys and in due course, and following a lot of political wrangling, the Metropolitan Board of Works was set up in 1855. Joseph Bazalgette was appointed as their Chief Engineer and remained in post until 1889 when the Board was abolished and the London County Council set up. In this period London’s sewage system was designed and built and Bazalgette oversaw the whole process. Much as we grumble today about unhealthy London and

The man who built London's sewers all the pollution, Bazalgette’s system of sewers immediately prevented the cholera epidemics and left our environment a lot cleaner.

There is of course a long story about how Bazelgette got to the stage of building London’s sewage system – all the committees, and the enquiries and the arguments.

But basically what he built – and it was much more complicated than this really – was to build two huge sewers parallel to the river, north and south which picked up all the little local sewers flowing down into the river. At the end of the sewers – north and south – were grand pumping stations, amazing great buildings full of ornament and flourishes which only the workers there would ever see.

So what have we got in Greenwich left from all this important work? Of course our grand pumping station is at Crossness, which is technically in Bexley (just). If you haven’t seen it – go first chance you get. The decoration alone is totally and utterly amazing. There were four massive steam engines – and one of them is now sometimes set to work for visitors to see. Look at the website of the volunteer group who run the historic bit of the site and it will tell you when it is open – and they have just built a new railway. They also do a really good newsletter packed with information – and lots of articles about the works, the community which grew up there and much else. www.crossness.org.uk/ The rest of the Crossness site – which still deals with London’s sewage – is also very interesting with lots of added wildlife. In the distance, down in Bexley Borough

there is a building with a curly roof which incinerates all the dry waste which used to go to the Black Deep in the Sludge Boats. I guess many older residents will remember the Sludge Boats and wonderful vessels they were too and something else that has gone from London River.

So – how did the sewage get there? Most of the pipework is of course now underground in the built up area but not all of it. If you go to Plumstead Station – cross the main road and follow a sign to the Ridgeway which you will find is a raised bank with a green pathway and a cycle track. This is the Southern Outfall sewer going down to Crossness – and also a great green walk with all sorts of things to see on the way. The sewer is actually huge - if you go over the River to Abbey Lane in Newham the Northern Outfall passes overhead and you can look up and see above you the big pipes which carry the liquid waste down to Abbey Mills, and get some idea of the size – our Southern Outfall is rh same.

Now – we have to come to the really important Greenwich building.

Confusingly Deptford Pumping Station is in Greenwich High Road backing on to Norman Road. It is different from the other Deptford Pumping Station which is for fresh water and is partly Brookmill Park.

The Greenwich High Road site is also now a building site – and more about that in a moment. It was opened in 1865 and is described as a ‘lift pumping station’. What happens is that a number of sewers meet here and the waste is pumped up into the Southern Outfall - the high-level sewer starts

from Herne Hill via Peckham and New Cross, the middle-level sever from Balham via Brixton, Stockwell and Camberwell and a sewer from Bermondsey. The system is now, of course, more complicated than that now and has been altered and added to over the years – including a vast great structure in Charlton.

I was taken on a visit to Deptford Pumping Station at some time in the 1980s and I remember the site Engineer saying that the system below our feet was a ‘structure like a great cathedral’. It originally had four beam engines to do the pumping – lifting 123 million gallons a day.

The station has obviously been modernised - extended in 1905 and in one wing are electric and diesel pumps which were installed in 1934. Behind it – and visible from the DLR trains – is an ornate cast iron coal shed. The site is now partly in use as a construction site for the Tideway Tunnel - in itself a piece of public health engineering which in some senses continues Bazalgette’s work Joseph Bazalgette undertook far more work than this for the Metropolitan Board of Works.

His most famous work is the Embankment in Central London but he also had great influence on the five free river crossings down river of the Tower – in particular in regard to the Blackwall Tunnel. They were however built after his death by the London County Council – as a way of ensuring the principle that south east Londoners could cross the river without having to pay tolls.

Bazalgette died in 1891 but his work lives on. His Greenwich High Road buildings are all ‘listed’ – but

they are hidden away behind a high wall and I guess many people never notice them. Perhaps that’s how it should be, hiding pumps which undertake everyday necessary work and part of the infrastructure which makes out live comfortable, and which we never think about. There is a memorial to him on the Victroria Embankment but his real memorial will be the embankment itself, and most of all the sewage system which contributes so much to the health of all of us.

Super stressed?

How do I find my off button?

here is an advert around at the moment advertising a mobile service which is boldly claiming that phones are good.

Now I completely agree that phones are super practical, innovative and an important asset in running our modern lives but good for us? As a coach who assists people with stress, anxiety and overwhelm, my answer has to be no.

We live in an age of instant access, emails, texts and calls are time sensitive demanding a response. We live in a world of high pressure and bristling impatience, our phones are the key contributors to feeling constantly on demand, is it then surprising that we find it challenging to switch off and truly relax?

Technology has been innovating at such a speed that we have not had the time to learn how to use this technology in a way that serves us, instead of our phones becoming the masters of us. You just need to walk down any high street to observe people, nose down, totally focused on their phones and any social occasion will have phones on the table or bar and always, always turned on…

Our phones are most often the last thing we look at before sleep and the very first thing we turn to in the morning, we are never disconnected from them.

Now let me talk a little science here… whatever we focus on in our moments before our night’s rest, we take into our sleep. So if you have been checking your work emails last thing, that is what you will be taking into your slumber and your subconscious will be furiously processing this while you sleep. Is it surprising then that you wake up still feeling stressed? Obviously you have had no down time, no time away from the stress and strain of your work, only to have to start all over again the next day. This full on mentality is what causes burnout and anxiety, we need time away from all our stresses to properly reboot. We are not built to be on it, foot down on the accelerator 24/7,

psychologically and emotionally we cannot survive this way. I call it a need to disconnect from the mainframe, it’s a human need and one that we ignore at our peril.

Now I am not a technophobe by any means, I’m delighted with how my phone enables me to keep in easy contact with my clients and also FaceTime my sister in LA at a moment’s notice, it’s quite brilliant!

However I do see the fallout of not being aware of how we use our phones and most importantly how they have come to dictate our behaviours. When a client comes to me for coaching and they are super stressed, feeling they are on an ever rotating hamster

wheel, just about keeping up, I always address their relationship with their phones first.

Here are some of my secrets to ease the stress and feel back in control, strategies which achieve amazing results.

The first thing is to create a bedroom haven, this needs to be a place of calm, a place of peace and relaxation, a veritable refuge from the outside world.

At bedtime it becomes a place where you read, listen to music and decompress. If you are on your own it’s a time to spend some valuable me-time doing what you enjoy, if you have a partner this can be valuable connection

time. In this before bedtime space there are no screens.

No screens I hear you shout in dismay, yes absolutely, phones placed out of sight, laptops off, no TV. Invest in an alarm clock.

This is crucial to give you the conducive environment to relax and recharge, to disconnect from the mainframe, as I call it.

The second thing to do, bearing in mind that what you focus on just before you sleep your subconscious will the process during the night, is to introduce some positive good thoughts.

I thoroughly recommend a Gratitude Journal just before sleep, a note book in which

you write 5 things you have appreciated in your day, things that have simply warmed your heart. All the latest research in Positive Psychology has discovered this to be a very productive way of both reinforcing your positive thinking and giving you the much needed recuperative downtime to fully recharge.

This way we are working with technology in a way that allows us to reap all the benefits while also taking care of our all important well being. Basically a win-win situation, just needs a rethink from you, are you ready?

n Monday 8 April, Young Greenwich will be holding an event to re-open Valley Central Youth Hub, with all young people invited to attend free of charge from 4.30-8pm.

Delivered by Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) on behalf of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Young Greenwich is the name for the youth service across the Borough.

There will be a number of activities on the night, including a DJ class, boxing, table tennis, pool and video games, and free food and drink.

Charlton midfielder Jake Forster-Caskey will be in attendance at the event, alongside Cllr Gary Dillon and Cllr Linda Perks, who both represent Charlton Ward.

After the re-launch, Valley Central Youth Hub will be open between Tuesday and Friday evenings for 10 to 19-year-olds who live, work or study in the Borough, or 10 to 25-year-olds

with special educational needs and disabilities.

The hub will provide a safe space for young people to make new friends and learn new skills.

Getting Valley Central ready for the re-launch has been a team effort bringing together people from across the community.

Artist Kim Ruiz kindly made a dedicated mural on one of the walls.

Deptford makes room for tapas

M

any tapas-loving Brixtonites were left aghast when Donostia Social Club (DSC) in Pop Brixton closed its doors last spring, wirtes Holly O'Mahony...

Brixton’s loss was Deptford’s gain, though, as DSC owners Paul Belcher and Adrain Copperstone made the decision to focus on their second venture – The Tapas Room, which already had a base in Tooting’s Broadway Market – opening a second branch in Deptford Market Yard.

Nine months on and the Basqueinspired tapas restaurant has settled in well to the polished (if a little gentrified) complex that feels like a slice of central London in SE8. We visit The Tapas Room on a Wednesday evening and find it both lively and almost full – unlike its neighbouring restaurants which were also open yet virtually dormant. Seating ourselves on the one unpeopled high wooden bench, we discover that on Wednesday nights, the restaurant offers free wine tasting, and suddenly the mid-week merrymaking makes sense.

Getting straight to it, we order a glass of the Sumarroca Pinot Noir Rosado, a sparkling rosé the

restaurant’s manager-cum-waiter Max describes as ‘banging’. It certainly is; Ribena-like in colour, the wine is sweet and fruity with a full-bodied energy that suits the environment.

Clinking then swirling out glasses, we browse the onepage food menu stuffed with intensely thought-through tapas (the wine menu, incidentally, is triple the length of the food one and dedicated to Spanish wines).

Decisions like these will make you glad tapas is a notoriously social cuisine, and the more diners you come with, the more you’ll get to try (although be warned: tables won’t comfortably sit more than four of you).

We began with padron peppers which came oily, grilled and speckled with large flecks of sea salt. They were extremely moreish, but before we had time to finish the bowl, a plate of salt cod croquettes – dressed in what we think was micro coriander – arrived and out attention was diverted. I ordered these having had them recently at popular Soho tapas joint Barrafina and they were every bit as good at The Tapas Room, but could have done with a dipping sauce – perhaps an aioli or romesco.

The fizz had put us in a

celebratory mood and we decided to treat ourselves to a seared scallop each. What arrived looked a picture and tasted every bit as good: giant shells plated the almost raw scallops which were drenched in a herby, buttery sauce, and dressed with purply-green leaves and crunchy almonds. The seabass was another winner, the white hunks of meaty fish dressed in a nutty, smoky romesco sauce, and scattered prettily with micro coriander and spring onion.

A plate of wild mushrooms seemed a little oily and heavy on the garlic unless careful attention was paid to ensuring each forkful included the accompanying sunblushed tomatoes (which lent it a tang) and green apple slivers (which provided a sweet crunch).

Those who prize a dish on its size will appreciate that of the lamb cutlets, which came atop a watery white bean stew and with a spoonful of slightly flavourless tapenade. Never mind though, the lamb itself had flavour enough – you could smell the mint before the plate arrived on the table.

We couldn’t resist the temptation to share a portion of churros to round the meal off. As the only dessert on the menu, the stakes were high and fortunately they

delivered: thin, crispy swirls of doughnutty deliciousness arrived still sizzling from the fryer, dusted in cinnamon sugar and with a watery chocolate sauce waiting tantalisingly on the side. We made light work of them.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about The Tapas Room was watching Paul – who is the restaurant’s chef as well as its co-owner – and Max running the ship seamlessly between them.

It’s a tight space with a tiny open kitchen. It would be hard enough to fry burgers in it, let alone make intricately-designed, prettilypresented tapas. But the pair pull it off, delivering a steady ream of dishes to the room of 15 or so diners from when we arrive until we leave. What’s more, they do it with a cool-headed enthusiasm – each taking the time to talk to us about the various dishes and wines, and Paul’s journey with Spanish cuisine.

It’s because of this, and the fact the offering here is truly first-rate, that you can’t help feeling glad for Paul and Adrain that their gamble has paid off – and that the second branch of The Tapas Room is clearly a success. Brixtonites will just have to travel a little further for their tapas now.

This is to facilitate works by Conways who need to carry out raised table works.

2. The Order will come into operation on 8th April 2019 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take six weeks. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Eynsham Drive at the junction of Harrow Manorway. However only one direction is to be shut at a time.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Harrow Manorway, Knee Hill, Mcleod Road, Basildon Road and Vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
