The Trafalgar tavern is giving out free laughs with every pint on October 4 (7:30pm-9:30pm). Dance performance piece Origami, by Satchie Noro and Silvain Ohl, comes to Greenwich Peninsula’s Now Gallery on October 12. Combining a shipping container and a gravity-defying dancer, the free event is at 5:30pm and 7:30pm. Inspired by the Japanese art of paper folding, the 35 minute, free performance sees the container gently unfurl, creating a geometric performance space where dancer Satchie Noro dangles from its sharp corners and glides on its vertiginous edges. Palatial splendour

O

n a glorious September Sunday we visited Eltham Palace and Gardens, a magnificent building that straddles the aeons and combines several forms of architecture due to various owners adding their own personal style to a place that has accommodated kings and queens since 1305.

Eltham Palace was used as a royal residence from the 14th to the 16th century and was where Prince Henry, the young Henry VIII, grew up. Its heyday, however, ended with the rebuilding of Greenwich Palace, which was more accessible by river.

Over time the palace and great hall, built in 1470, fell to ruin with one 17th century owner actually nicking the lead off the roof!

The house itself was bombed in WWI Zeppelin raids, so by the time the wealthy Courtaulds family purchased the property

from the Crown, in 1933, Eltham Palace was in a terrible state of disrepair. But with the family funds behind them, Stephen and Virginia Courtauld employed architects Seely and Paget to build a new house on the old ruins that complements and incorporates the medieval great hall, which was itself renovated in line with the new plans.

What we have now is the best of both worlds: 19 acres of gardens combining 20th century and medieval elements, and a building that pays homage to all that was great about the 1930s attached to a Tudor hall.

The new house offered all the latest mod cons of the day: telephones in all the guest rooms, an integrated vacuum cleaning system whereby the domestics merely plugged a pipe in to wall sockets and the dust was sucked up and taken off to a large receptacle in the basement. The best woods are

used for the striking veneers; natural light floods in through glass domes, electricity powers an audio system, clocks and heaters to warm the rooms in the colder months.

The entrance hall to the Courtaulds former home is overwhelmingly stunning. The furniture and carpet depict a world of luxury and style that still looks contemporary more than 80 years on. Going up the stairs you find opulent bedrooms with walnut and oak panelling; handprinted murals.

Objet d’art from around the world - memories of the Courtaulds’ travels - add dashes of colour to the bedrooms. Sunken baths and heated towel rails were ahead of their time, as was the underfloor heating, although the bathroom tiling, very modern then, looks somewhat dated now. Many of the rooms still have the original decor and sofas, making them pleasing to the eye, and the dining room has a piano for entertaining.

The audio guide and information video hints at dinner parties. Oh what wonderful weekends must have been had. In Second World War air raids visiting friends would adjourn to the basement where there was a snooker room, and we are told that you could hardly hear the bombs or anti-aircraft guns down there.

Alas, it was the constant bombing that convinced the Courtaulds to move in 1944 and the estate was appropriated by the Army.

In 1995 English Heritage took over the running and has been systematically restoring the interiors ever since, with new finds and more rooms being open to the

public on quite a regular basis.

Eltham Palace and Gardens is a real treasure right on our doorstep and deserves to be kept for the nation. Its significance to our history and to architecture and design cannot be measured.

0s DJ Mick Brown is returning to his old stomping ground with a residency at the new Love Shack nightclub. On the last Friday of every month, Mick, is getting party-goers onto the dancefloor in Lewisham.

“Love Shack is a retro club, so I’ll be playing what they want: ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, club classics, anything that’s great and dance-able. We can cherry pick the best,” Mick told the Weekender.

Born in New Cross, Mick went to school in West Greenwich. “I do lots of stuff around the country – big ‘80s events, Tropicana nights, Butlins’ nights. It’s great to be back playing around the old haunts. The last place I played there would’ve been Yates’s in Lewisham,” the DJ said.

During his years on Capital FM, Mick championed a lot of the Stock, Aitken and Waterman artists of the ‘80s.

“We hosted Michael Jackson’s tour at Wembley stadium. It was weird. There’s 100,000 people, and you do lots of those shows: Lionel Richie, Tina Turner in Hyde Park.

It’s like hosting the pre-match, introducing the band,” he said.

Currently Mick hosts two radio programs: a breakfast show on Delite radio and a drivetime show on Radio Jackie.

The Love Shack residency promises a “fun night out.” “With great music –soul music and dance is my favourite, and disco reggae,” he said. “Over the years with my being linked to the ‘80s and ‘90s, and having six hits in the charts, everyone wants retro now. 15 years ago everyone wanted ‘70s, now they want Madonna, Michael Jackson, Wham, and I was there, part of that era.”

The 61st BFI London Film Festival returns to our capital, and all Londoners can have a piece of the action. With 243 film screenings over 12 days, the festival opens with the European premiere of Breathe, starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy.

Ones to watch: BREATHE Andy Serkis’s biographical drama follows Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) who at age 28 is paralysed by polio and given three months to live. around 30 years,” Mick said. “I left school and worked for Selfridges in advertising, and one day my guvnor asked who listened to Capital- I was only 16, and he said ‘you can be our radio producer.’ This was the early days and it was dying a bit on its arse. No one was advertising, they gave us some advertising.”

He worked his way through the company from advertising to copywriting, producing, and finally presenting.

“Radio presenting is totally different to being a DJ–when you go to clubs it’s a totally different crowd and you’re working a room.

You’re only talking to one person on a radio show,” he said. “Years ago you used to turn up with boxes and boxes of CDs and records and just play as you went. Now I know what the club wants and I prepare before I get it.”

17th century Woolwich kiln gone but not forgotten

hree months ago an important piece of Woolwich industrial history was utterly destroyed – and quite deliberately. The deed was even done in the car park of the Greenwich Heritage Centre.

What was going on?

In 1974 a group of eager young people were part of an archaeological excavation along with Woolwich Waterfront – most of them weren’t professional archaeologists, but enthusiasts keen to learn and do their bit. They found a lot of stuff – but there was one big star item. The Woolwich kiln. It was a kiln for making pottery – making what were called Bellarmines, jugs for beer with a modelled face on the front. It dated from the seventeenth century – said to be the oldest such kiln ever found in this country – and a very very important find. Experts from the British Museum came to look at it and it was decided it must be kept.

Greenwich Council offered to look after the huge kiln. It was lifted up – I don’t know how – and taken down to the Council’s then Depot at Tunnel Avenue on the Greenwich Peninsula.

And there is stayed, all boxed up. The Waterside Leisure Centre was built in the place where it had been found in

In 1990 it could no longer stay in Tunnel Avenue, so, all 43 tons of it were put on a low loader and brought back to Woolwich and left on the Arsenal site. There was some nervousness by then about what was actually in the box – had it all disintegrated? Had there been seeds inside which had become plant growth and destroyed it? Museum staff climbed a ladder, opened the box – and found it was all ok.

So – then it sat outside the Heritage Centre for the next 28 years and people wondered what to do with it. The solution arrived with Oxford Archaeology who now have the ability to slice it, section it, record it digitally – and destroy it. So this is what has happened. Beforehand many of those keen young archaeologists came back to see it – now grey haired retirees –some with distinguished archaeological to their credit. Another visitor was an important expert on stone glazed ware from this kiln – and whose Greenwich pottery produces something similar today.

So on 30th March the Woolwich kiln was no more – an important and early part of our industrial history gone forever. Its fate also outlines a current problem facing the museum world

This is one of the problems which Greenwich Industrial History Society will be discussing at their meeting on 10th October – what should we doing about our amazing industrial heritage in Greenwich. We hope the discussion will be lead by historians working on the Arsenal site, at Enderby Wharf in Greenwich and others, including some with a general

Deptford dancing

D

eptford has been subjected to a deluge of dancing over the last few weeks as rehearsals of the latest stage production of Flashdance the Musical have been taking place at a secret location in the town.

Stars of the new musical revival Strictly Come Dancing Champion Joanne Clifton and A1’s Ben Adams - have been spotted visiting local cafes and shops during breaks in their rehearsal schedules and I caught up with them to see how the show is shaping up.

“It’s going very, very well and I’m really excited to be a part of it.”

Ben tells me and his enthusiasm about the new touring production is infectious.

The show - which will make visits to both Wimbledon and Dartford on its way around the country marks Ben’s professional musical theatre debut.

But his costar Joanne Clifton is much more at home with the art form having recently played the titular role in the classic musical Thoroughly Modern Millie.

last year alongside BBC sports presenter Ore Oduba.

Former World Ballroom Showdance Champion, Joanne is looking forward to the challenge of appearing in Flashdance The Musical and said, “It’s a full on show both dancing wise and singing wise so it’s been a little bit intense.”

Like her previous theatrical outing – which featured traditional 1920s style routines - Flashdance will stretch Joanne’s abilities and she will have to perfect another variety of dance. She explained, “We had Charleston and tap in the other one - which I don’t do - but it’s all Hip-hop and commercial in this one.”

But Joanne tells me, a career in musical theatre has always been on the cards and as a youngster, she was given the choice

between attending a drama school in London or staying at the family home in Waltham, Lancashire to pursue a career in dance. “I wanted to go to musical theatre school, but my parents couldn’t afford for me to do both.

I thought I’d choose the safer route because all of my family up to my grandparents and great grandparents - were ballroom and Latin dancers, so I thought I would stick with it.”

As a young performer, Joanne continued to take lessons in singing and acting and after a hugely successful career in Italy, returned again to her musical theatre studies in 2014, while starring as one of the professional dancers in Strictly Come Dancing.

And despite this being Ben Adams’ first theatrical foray (apart from some highly acclaimed

pantomime appearances) the singer-songwriter - who won a Brit award with A1 in 2001 - has recently written a musical of his own entitled Eugienus!. The new musical was showcased at the London Palladium in June 2016 and will receive a West End run early next year.

Ben tells me, “I’ve caught the musical theatre bug, but from the other side. I really enjoyed creating one and sitting and watching other people, but I decided I’d like to know what it would be like to be in one.”

The 1983 film Flashdance- that starred Jennifer Beals - became famous for its raunchy dance routines and hit soundtrack, including the Academy Award winning song “Flashdance…What a Feeling” (performed by Irene Cara).

Joanne tells me that the stage musical adaptation features all of the famous tunes and many more, “It’s got all of the iconic ones, all of the ones everyone knows; ‘What a Feeling’, ‘Gloria’, ‘Maniac’, ‘I love Rock and Roll’, but the actual songs that aren’t well known are just as good.”

Ben adds: “The original score is just as strong. A lot of the time when I go to see musical theatre, the weakest thing is the music strangely enough - and that’s not the case for this show; all of the songs are absolutely brilliant, so they’re a joy to sing.”

Fun Palace returns

Captain Barnacles from CBeebies’ Octonauts will be dropping into the National Maritime Museum as it hosts its first ever Fun Palace.

The NMM is taking part in the nationwide Fun Palace initiative - which aims to make arts, culture and science free and accessible to everyone – with an event called Submerged on Saturday, October 7.

The event will see the museum flooded with a range of activities from 10.30am, including the visit from Octonauts character as well as author and CBBC actor Olly Pike, who will be reading from his children’s book Prince Henry.

There will also be music from the South London Samba and acapella performances from the London International Choir.

The Thunderbirds takeover of the Emirates Air Line cable car is in full swing now, just as the new TV series launches.

The cable car has Tracey Island themed terminals and Thunderbirds vehicle themed cabins, which feature the show’s classic ‘5-4-3-2-1’ countdown.

There will also be specially edited scenes from the series played onboard, including ones combined with aerial footage of the cable car and surrounding London landmarks.

The Thunderbirds takeover lasts until October 31.

The Phoenix of Catford

T

he Catford Bridge Tavern is a grand old pub that was sadly gutted by fire a while back. Six months ago, however, it had a grand reopening, rising like a phoenix from the ashes after the community got together to ensure its safe future.

Being such a big pub, you can sit and quite happily watch the football in one area, dine finely in another, sit in comfortable chairs reading or playing board games with friends and family in a quiet corner, or take in the fresh air on the large terrace, and all without your space being disturbed by another.

Myself and Nina were led by manager Catriona to a booth that offered views over the restaurant section, the open kitchen and the terrace, and she also handed us a gin and beer list. Nina opted for the Opihr Oriental Spiced Gin with tonic, while I had a Langunitas IPA, a draught ale with plenty of taste.

The menu is kept short and to the point: a meat, a fish and a vegetarian option, with specials changing every week. I like that idea as I am prone to getting bogged down when there are too many choices. We began with

the Whitebait and Risotto Balls to share. There is little to say about the little fish other than they were crunchy and fishy. Perfect. Plus, the crispy balls of parmesan, basil and rice worked well with the pesto.

Catriona told us how the Catford Bridge Tavern was resurrected with help from the local council and people to become the community hub that it is now. It looked like it was doing its job as there were families there (father

and son playing backgammon), couples dining, and a few people watching Liverpool get the better of Leicester.

Our server Katie brought our main courses. Nina had the aged beef burger that came with really excellent hand-cut, skin-on French fries. The medium rare beef was right up her boulevard. I know that because all I could hear was the occasional “mmm” as she got stuck into it. She paired that with a robust Trashumante Garnacha, a

Spanish red that ticked all the right boxes.

I had the chicken with black cabbage and brown and white beans. I do love a good pulse and these were good pulses.

The chicken, though, was truly delicious; it was moist and fell away from the bone at the slightest touch, and went nicely with a citrussy Muscadet.

After all those chips and all those beans we were quite full so decided to defer dessert for a while and sat discussing the merits of the meal over our wines. “This red is delicious,” said Nina before praising the beef, the fries and the salad dressing.

Some time passed before we felt ready to share the chocolate fondant with salted caramel ice cream. The deferred gratification served us well as we both enjoyed it all the more. Everything about it was good, except that I lost the battle of the spoons - Nina beat me to most of the ice cream and caramel sauce! I need to up my game when it comes to sharing desserts.

Being right next to two stations, visiting the Catford Bridge Tavern was like finding a goldmine to us

as we now know we can jump on a train and partake in their tempting midweek Steak Nights and two burgers for £12.50 Mondays.

Bringing this pub back to life was a good thing because it is a valuable asset to the community and all that use it.

on Mondays to Fridays inclusive “the BK CPZ hours”;

(ii) provide permit holders parking places that would operate between 9am and 10am on Mondays to Fridays inclusive on

the north-east side of Kidbrooke Park Road, between Kidbroooke Park Close and Wricklemarsh Road;

(iii) provide a permit parking area throughout that part of Kidbrooke Park Close that is public highway (this will

be indicated by the sign “Permit holders parking only past this point” without any specific marked out parking places

on the carriageway); and

(iv) provide a combination of permit holders parking places and single yellow line waiting restrictions that would operate

during the BK CPZ hours throughout the extended part of BK CPZ except where the double yellow lines,

parking places and parking area referred to a sub-paragraphs 2(b)(i), 2(c)(ii) and 2(c)(iii) above would be provided;

(d) (i) provide that in addition to the roads within the existing KN CPZ, the extended KN CPZ would include Rochester between Wricklemarsh Road and Kidbrooke Way and would retain operational hours of between 10.30am and Way,

12.30pm on Mondays to Fridays inclusive “the KN CPZ hours”;

(ii) provide a combination of permit holders parking places and single yellow line waiting restrictions that would operate

during the KN CPZ hours throughout the extended KN CPZ not referred to in sub-paragraph 2(b) above;

(e) provide that:

(i) residents whose postal address is within BK or KN CPZ would be able to purchase permits and visitors’ vouchers; and

(ii) business users whose postal address is within BK or KN CPZ would be able to purchase permits,

for parking within their respective CPZs at the rates set out in Schedule 2 to this Notice; and

(f) provide that in respect of Zone BK CPZ referred to in sub-paragraph 2(e) above, the postal addresses shall include all those in

Lambourne Place, Rosse Mews and Shooters Hill Road (south side, between St. German’s Place and Rochester Way).

NOTICE IS ALSO HEREBY GIVEN that the Council propose to convert the footway on the north-east side of Rochester Way, between

the north-eastern kerb-line of Kidbrooke Way and the pedal cycle / foot bridge approximately 100 metres north of that kerb-line into

cycle track, using powers under section 65 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Cyclists and pedestrians would share the full width

of the cycle track, with each having equal rights over them.
