Popcorn ready? Greenwich Peninsula’s Outdoor Film Festival continues this Saturday, with two more titles to watch from the comfort of a breezy deckchair. The larger-than-life refugee puppet who voyaged into Lewisham last autumn? This summer, local participatory arts collective Emergency Exit Arts have unleashed their own giant puppet in our local parks, where she’ll be telling stories from diverse global voices. This Friday, the puppet will head up a flamboyant procession of singers and percussionists in General Gordon Square as part of Woolwich Fun Fridays. A secret concert

Sofar Sounds, the trailblazing live music collective known for performing live concerts in unusual settings, are coming to Greenwich. Yoga with a view – and a fist!

Boxing and yoga might not sound like natural mat-fellows, but hoping to prove otherwise is BoxingYoga™, a practice fusing the strength training of the former with the peaceful, rhythmic flow of the latter – but, surprisingly, with no actual boxing (or gloves!) involved. Founded in 2012 by award-winning boxing coach Matt Garcia, with the help of yoga teacher Kajza Ekberg, BoxingYoga is today a growing franchise with a branch in Thamesmead, led by instructor Amanda Eatwell. Weekly classes are currently being held on Sundays on the roof of the Lakeside Centre, where views of Southmere Lake below offer a slice of tranquillity.

Holly O’Mahony: How does BoxingYoga actually work? The two practices involved don’t sound like they’d naturally complement one another!

Amanda Eatwell: It’s true, it sounds like an oxymoron, but it’s not! Essentially it is a yoga class, most akin to vinyasa flow.

We replace the usual prayerposition with a boxers’ guard position, and there are a few slow moves that use boxing terminology, but all in all it’s a

fantastic system for building strength in body and mind.

HOM: How did BoxingYoga come about? Whose vision was it in the first place?

AE: BoxingYoga was created by Matt Garcia to fill a gap he felt was present in a boxer’s training schedule. He set about creating a routine that offered strength and flexibility – both important factors of a boxer’s repertoire.

HOM: How did you come

across the practice?

AE: I have been a BoxingYoga coach since 2016. I’ve been practising yoga since my early twenties and met one of the BoxingYoga co-founders by chance. I went to check it out and soon fell in love with it!

I mooted the idea of offering classes and the team agreed the roof space would provide a great location. We’re currently running the classes as a tenweek trial, but I will be looking for alternative, weather-safe locations locally so I can continue to offer BoxingYoga. If readers have any ideas, I’d love to hear them!

HOM: Your classes are currently just £5 per session, which sounds like very good value. Can you tell us more about your pricing policy?

And, who are classes open to?

AE: We want to make the classes accessible to as many people as possible and the pricing policy has been agreed in association with Bow Arts.

BoxingYoga is beneficial to all genders.

While I can adapt some movements, and people are always given the option to rest or take a less exerting pose where necessary, this class is aimed at people who are in good general health. editorial@weekender.co.uk

HOM: What do you hope attendees take away from a BoxingYoga session?

AE: I would hope that they take away a sense of achievement and of experiencing something enjoyable, even if a little challenging. This is a non-judgmental space offering plenty of encouragement.

It’s playtime at the National Maritime Museum

A programme of free, drop-in indoor and outdoor activities is running at the National Maritime Museum over the summer holidays. Tuesdays are all about encouraging your under 5s to enjoy outdoor fun, while on select days in August, the Collective Makers’ Kit of Parts invites families of all ages to explore shapes and use their imaginations to draw connections between them. Then there’s Summer Sundays, a chance to join the museum facilitators in one big celebration of play.

Holly O’Mahony: There are a lot of free family events happening at RMG this summer. What have we got to look forward to?

Katie Cassels: At the museum we take play seriously! The Summer of Play programme has been created to help families play in museum spaces, making galleries feel less intimidating and encouraging everyone to engage with the museum on their own terms.

This summer you can play both inside and outside the galleries through a range of facilitated activities and

with the support of guided trails.

HOM: You mentioned Play Outdoor Tuesdays, which is aimed at under 5s. What sort of activities will you be running?

KC: Our Tuesday programme is returning after demand from families who participated last year. Come along and have a go at painting with water or constructing something using just paper. These activities are particularly suited to our youngest visitors and are delivered by early years specialists.

On Tuesday July 26 and August 9, we are also joined by the Caribbean Social Forum who will be returning

to the museum with ‘Games without Wires’: games from across the world. Families are invited to meet the members, try new games and get a little competitive!

HOM: You’re also running activities in partnership with diversitychampioning visual arts organisation The Collective Makers. What can visitors expect from these?

KC: The Collective Makers are an organisation that was created due to a lack of opportunity for emerging visual artists. They campaign to improve diversity within the art sector, and to raise artist profiles.

The organisation has been working with our family programming team to create a ‘kit of parts’ to stimulate play and curiosity for family visitors. The activity will be made of multiple building blocks that can be constructed in any way families want, and will sit on top of a beautifully decorated art work to provoke and prompt families to play, build and create. The ‘kit of parts’ will be available for families to explore at the museum on Wednesdays and Thursdays, from August 10 until the end of the summer holidays.

HOM: Then on Sundays, you’re hosting a celebration of play. I’m sure this will be very popular with visitors looking to fill the long summer holidays. What sorts of activities can they get involved with?

KC: On Sundays throughout the summer holidays, creative practitioners will be delivering activities encouraging families to play and have fun together. There will be something for everyone, from labyrinths and obstacle courses to roam together, to giant games and activities to help families imagine life on board a ship.

HOM: All the Summer of Play activities you’re offering are free, which I’m sure will come as a relief to parents and carers, especially at a time of tightening the purse strings during the cost of living crisis…

KC: The National Maritime Museum is a resource and a hub for the local community. The museum is a free space with something for everyone to enjoy. In a time when the cost of living is increasing, the museum can provide a full and stress-free day out.

30 years back at The Valley celebrations planned

The return to The Valley in 1992 also marked the start of Charlton’s community programme by CACT CEO Jason Morgan (centre).

Charlton Athletic will be celebrating the 30-year anniversary of their historic return to The Valley with a number of events planned throughout the upcoming 2022/23 season.

“The return to The Valley took incredible togetherness, determination and will and it is definitely worth celebrating.

The 30 years since have seen some ups and downs and I am hoping we can create some more of the good kind of memories in the years to come.”

The club will commit a proportion of event proceeds to the Community Trust in recognition of 30 years of community work.

December 5th will mark 30 years since the emotional day in 1992 on which the Addicks came home to SE7 following a seven-year exile, spearheaded by the drive of the club’s passionate supporters.

Jason Morgan, the Community Trust’s Chief Executive, said: “I was at that game 30 years ago and fully aware what it took from the fans in helping the club return to The Valley.

This is a special part of the Club’s history and 1992 was also the inception of the community programme at Charlton, which I’m so proud to still be involved with.

Charlton were forced to leave SE7 in 1985 after the club’s new board were unable to retain the freehold of the ground from former chairman Michael Gliksten.

Charlton supporters proved crucial in getting the club back home. After it was announced in 1989 that the club intended to return to The Valley, a mass clean-up operation got underway in SE7 with thousands of volunteers helping to tidy up a neglected Valley.

The Addicks had spent more than half a decade away from home, ground sharing with Crystal Palace and West Ham United, before their homecoming was sealed with a, now iconic, 1-0 victory over Portsmouth at The Valley and the club will be marking the occasion editorial@weekender.co.uk

Colin Walsh sealed the victory for the Addicks during iconic 1992 match against Portsmouth.

This season also marks 30 years of the community programme, now fondly known as Charlton Athletic Community Trust.

Meanwhile, the Women’s team game on the same weekend will also see celebrations surrounding the return to SE7 while a legends game is also set to take place at The Valley.

The home game against Cheltenham Town on Saturday, December 3rd falls closest to the anniversary and will see the Valley faithful come together to celebrate, with full details to be confirmed closer to the event.

A committee has been set up to oversee and deliver events throughout the season. Chaired by Steve Sutherland, Community Trust Ambassador and a former Charlton Athletic Commercial Director, it includes Fan Adviser Lucy

in style over the coming months.

History

The gas industry on Deptford Creek

There were four works connected with the manufacture of coal gas on Deptford Creek. Obviously the gas industry needs the coal trade because its raw material is coal – although gas companies needed to get the right coal from the right pit. The ‘gas industry’ is not really about power generation – coal gas manufacture is a chemical process which makes a product more easily transported than coal and can be used as a power source.

I thought it might be useful here to describe some of the events which took place before the first gas works on Deptford Creek was built. The first ever gas works, - the one in Westminster - was functioning by 1820. After that gas works were built all round London– with varying degrees of expertise and/or honesty. What happened in Greenwich and Deptford when the earliest local gas works was proposed?

Now before I start – I have – just this morning – found something rather earlier. I don’t know what happened to it and maybe there is a whole story here which I will find out in time. I am pretty sure it was on the Creek – somewhere on the west bank near the railway bridge.

This earliest Greenwich and Deptford Gas Company was started by engineer Ralph Dodds probably around 1816.

(I always thought he might be a bit dodgy). He had been busy, “a piece of ground was taken at Deptford, upon which docks, and other Works, were constructed” (don’t ask why he was building docks for a gas works, there is no doubt a good reason). As work continued ‘a large quantity of iron pipes, furnished by a foundry in Staffordshire, were deposited upon the premises’.

Now these pipes were eventually removed by a Mr. Fesenmeyer who said he was owed money. Mr. Dodd

said the money owed was nothing to do with him as he was ‘merely the employed agent of the company’.

Enquiries began as to who owned the company - two or three names of shareholders were discovered and they were approached. Some denied all knowledge of the company and others were angry. It appeared that they had all been owed money

by Mr.Dodd who had given them shares in his new gas company as settlement of the debt... (whoops!)

So back to something marginally more respectable. In Greenwich, as elsewhere, the vestry was responsible for street lighting. They realised that there was a new technology available for it and they were also aware of local worries on night time crime. There were a number of contractors around who were keen to help them solve these problems. So, in June 1822, Mr. Hedley iron merchant and gas light contractor got an introduction to meet Mr. Bicknell, the Greenwich Town Clerk.

Joseph Hedley ‘small and thin’ was from Norwich but in 1822 had an office in Coleman Street in the City. He built a number of gas works - for example in Gravesend, Dublin, Sheffield and Leeds and many more. Later he was engineer at the Rotherhithe Gas Works

described as ‘a worse arranged works that ever came to our notice’. There he was involved in a siege of the works one Christmas Eve – and it’s a pity I have no excuse to write about it here because ‘you wouldn’t believe what went on!’

So in 1822 he was getting himself introduced to local authorities wherever he could and offering to build them gas works - although it is not clear if any were actually completed by 1822 but he was talking to Woolwich and Dartford Vestries.

In Greenwich he took his solicitor, Mr Tilson, to meet Mr. Bicknell and Mr. Hargrave, Chairman of the churchwardens. Joshua Hargrave was a local businessman. John Bicknell was the son of Sabrina Sidney, who as a young girl had been ‘bought’ to be trained as the perfect wife. She later worked for Charles Burney at his Greenwich school and John went on to a distinguished legal career as solicitor to the Admiralty, and to become a fellow of the Royal Society.

He was also involved as clerk to the Greenwich Vestry for many years.

Hedley told Bickell and Hargrave that new street lights could be in place

by Michaelmas –late September. He wrote formally for permission to dig up the streets– offering a £500 bond

as a guarantee and ‘twenty or thirty lights gratis’ were part of the deal.

He would also get the necessary Act of Parliament. A petition then went to Parliament for ‘lighting the parish of Greenwich’ because, of the need to prevent ‘horrible murders’.

One of the Greenwich churchwardens, Richard Smith, began to complain that the parish was allowing ‘strangers’ to form a gas company and make a profit from it. It should be set up by local people themselves and provide a ‘good and proper light’ which would cost the parish absolutely nothing.

In July 1823 Mr Hedley was asked to attend a vestry meeting with his tender documents. When he got there he discovered that a Mr.Gosling had been asked to go in first to meet the vestry. Hedley sat for two hours outside the meeting and was then told that his tender was ‘inadmissible’ and that there was no record of his previous discussions. Mr Gosling had got the job.

As the pavements were dug up complaints from the public rolled in. Hedley was plotting revenge and he made public the costs compared to Gosling’s.

Meanwhile Gosling got an Act of Parliament for a Ravensbourne editorial@weekender.co.uk

Gas Light and Coke Co. and many Greenwich residents petitioned against it. He refused to say who his shareholders were although it was hinted that ‘everyone’ knew.

It turned out Greenwich vestry had broken its Standing Orders over Gosling’s contract and Mr. Bicknell resigned as Vestry Clerk. A record was made that this had been ‘illegally and shamefully expended and misapplied’ . Greenwich Vestry had not levied a rate – as they were legally obliged to - and a large majority of Vestrymen had voted not to and the Royal Hospital had agreed with them. As a result a Writ of Mandamus was issued by the Court of Kings Bench – this was (and is) an injunction forcing a local authority to fulfil its lawful obligations regardless of what it thought about it.

So the vestry resolved ‘to make a sufficient rate ... for lighting’ under protest. A vote of censure was passed on the Parish Officers for signing an ‘improvident and harmful contract’ with Gosling... and ‘to pay about £5,000’ for the ‘gross neglect ‘. Also raised were ‘expenses £10 for dinner at the Ship Tavern and £25 for a (another) dinner’.

Meanwhile Mr. Gosling’s works was going ahead. An old plan shows an ‘old gas works’ site on the eastern side www.weekender.co.uk

of Norway Street– on the current site of council flats – this was Gosling’s works which later became the site of the Victoria Foundry. In May 1824 it turned out that the Phoenix Gas Co. was about to buy it.

Phoenix, based in Southwark the borough, was the biggest and most successful Gas Company in South and Kentish London in the early 1820s. editorial@weekender.co.uk

Gosling said he would sell to Phoenix ‘at cost’ plus a percentage of future gas sales. An assessment of the works was to be carried out by David Mackintosh’s contracting firm, and

by William Anderson of the Grand Junction Waterworks. By the end of December an agreement had been reached although numerous extras were added – like Gosling’s son’s salary, Parliamentary expenses, and www.weekender.co.uk

investigations on his title to the land.

All of this was handled by Greenwich’s ex-vestry clerk, Bicknell and his respectable lawyer Mr.Tilson. I found a mention of him twenty years earlier in the diary of a local young lady – who said that at a tea party one afternoon her friend’s little boy caused so much disruption that he had to be taken home in disgrace – little Tommy

Tilson. Is it possible that all sharp lawyers began as naughty toddlers?

The Gosling works was finally closed

by Phoenix in 1828 when their new works was finally ready. They hung on to part of the site for many years and a gasholder built there by Gosling probably remained in use. It was advertised as a ‘valuable property near the river, with brick buildings and

a lofty chimney, suitable for an iron foundry or any trade needing large premises’. In the 1830s it was used by German chemist Wilhelm Beneke and by 1841 it was let to William Joyce the steam engine and ship builder.

Next week I’ll try and talk about the expansion of the gas industry along Deptford Creek – also see how similar it was to other towns around London.

Nighttime investigation works at Blackwall tunnel TfL is undertaking essential nighttime works at the Blackwall Tunnel. This will take place every Tuesday to Thursday night between 26 July and 11 August. The tunnel will be closed southbound from 11pm to 5am whilst TfL carry out its investigations. The tunnel will be open as normal outside these times and the northbound tunnel is not affected.
