The

June is Pride Month and for a celebration dripping in Art Deco decadence, head to Eltham Palace, where a Queer Walls event promises a night of 1930s entertainment. Hosting the event are leading drag king and queen Adam All and Apple Derrieres. The power-couple will strap on the personas of Stephen Courtauld and his wife Virginia, who used to host soirees at the palace. Come dressed to impress and look forward to a night of glamorous cabaret.

How’s this for a peaceful protest: On Saturday June 18, over 1,000 young people including students from 26 local schools, are filing into Lewisham’s Mountsfield Park to make a stand about the climate emergency. Organised as part of the London Borough of Culture programme, Hope 4 Justice is an arts-led protest, directed by Hannah Gittos. Those who turn up to support it will hear snippets of spoken word as well as musical performances from a thousand-strong choir of primary school children and musicians from South London Samba, and see dance performances from Bellingham Dances and Trinity Laban’s Youth Dance Company.

Head back in time on this architecture-focused guided walk between St Alfege Church and St Mary’s Church.

Led by Dr Alison Fisher, the walk will retrace the route of an 1823 procession which travelled between the two sites, considering the architectural impact of St Mary’s Church and discovering what became of the crypt after the church was demolished in 1936.

Show of hands, please!

West Country folk duo Show of Hands are reuniting with folk singer Miranda Sykes for a longawaited tour that stops in at Blackheath Halls this autumn on November 23. One to book in advance while you can still snap up tickets (hint, hint), the tour has been postponed because of the pandemic and marks the first time audiences will be able to watch the trio take to the stage together since 2017, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Formed in Devon back in 1986 by singer-songwriter Steve Knightley and composer-instrumentalist Phil Beer, Show of Hands quickly built up a reputation for writing songs about contemporary social issues.

They provide their own musical accompaniment too, between them playing: guitars, violin, viola, mandolin, mandocello and cuatro.

Singer and double-bassist Miranda Sykes first joined the duo for a tour in 2004 and has since become a regular collaborator. While the November concert will mark the group’s first performance at Blackheath Halls, audiences may have seen Miranda perform in The Hearn Recital Room with her Behind the Wall project earlier this year.

Steve said: “It’s going to be quite emotional in a way, a very reflective atmosphere after a long time apart. To return to the stage after two cancelled tours and Covid restrictions will be really quite something – that atmosphere is going to be incredible.”

Show of Hands will be performing old favourites – a chance for the audience to sing along to familiar choruses – but also, excitingly, some new songs too. “We’ll be launching new songs, playing dance classics and revisiting solo pieces,” Steve revealed. “The usual melodic narrative will be accompanied by our trademark West Country base, but it will take on a more reflective form in a response to the times we’ve all been through.”

Two months of free culture on Greenwich Peninsula

Summer Sessions returns to Greenwich Peninsula in one big celebration of culture, the great outdoors and community spirit.

Running from June until late August, the programme offers visitors to North Greenwich a space to enjoy live music, games and outdoor cinema – all without having to dip into their pockets, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The programme kicks off with a Jazz Weekender. Running on June 18 and 19, the festival promises an eclectic line-up of musicians, with performances taking place outdoors from midday and street food trucks keeping partygoers energised.

Rivalling the technicoloured golf course and running for the same two month period is a bold, patterned ping-pong table by designer Camille Walala. Come on down for a refresher course or organise your own mini tournament.

Keeping it colourful, Yinka Ilori’s vibrant mini golf course returns for 2022, offering families, competitive adults and essentially any teams of up to six players a place to swing and putt balls for free. The course is open daily from June 18 - September 18, from 12pm - 6pm.

Cinephiles can look forward to a programme of outdoor films, running on Saturday nights from June 25 August 20. Pull up a deck chair and watch a recent hit (Parallel Mothers, Dune, West Side Story and Cruella are among the titles showing) under the stars. A bar serving cocktails

and stalls dishing up street food will complete the date night experience.

CACT’s summer HAF programme gives young people the opportunity to get involved in active learning, youth club/ creative arts and physical activities.

Help CACT and Ardmore feed young people across Greenwich and Bexley this summer After a successful fundraising campaign last year, Ardmore, a family-owned construction group, has once again teamed up with Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) to help fund meals for young people across our Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) and educational tutoring programmes.

The rising cost of living is increasing the number of families that are struggling to provide sufficient food for their children, especially during the school holidays.

CACT is running both our HAF and tutoring programmes this summer across Greenwich and Bexley. These programmes will supply two healthy, nutritious meals to disadvantaged young people attending the programmes, providing vital support to families and ensuring the young people are able to fully engage in a range of fun, active and educational activities.

Over 60 street parties took place, here you can see happy residents from King Street!

Acts included the House & Garage Orchestra and YolanDa’s Band Jam from Cbeebies, who took to the main stage entertaining the crowds. The weather was in our favour, as families were able to enjoy picnics, market stalls, give-it-a go crafts, sports sessions and more.

To mark 50 years of Pride in London, the Pride 50 tent offered fabulous performances and activities for all ages. Residents were also able to meet community organisations and councillors.

Incredible performances and activities really brought the royal spirit over the weekend. The fire dancer pictured to the right is a performer for Eternal Taal.

The day’s finale took place in Woolwich’s General Gordon Square where crowds gathered to watch the ceremonial lighting of the Platinum Jubilee beacon.

Performances from the Sikh Temple and Royal Air Cadets provided a fanfare for the flame which was lit by Mayor Cllr Leo Fletcher and Deputy Lieutenant of Royal Greenwich Pieter van der Merwe.

More than 1,500 beacons around the United Kingdom were lit at the same time to pay tribute to Her Majesty as part of the official Platinum Jubilee Weekend.

On Friday 3 June, celebrations continued with Platinum Picnic in the Park. Residents enjoyed performances at Charlton Park from local cultural performers who shared stories of monarchies all around the world.

To finish off the weekend’s festivities, neighbours gathered in their hundreds to host more than 60 street parties on Saturday and Sunday with food, music, and more.

HOM: What does a less traditional opera company look like?

KB: We’re striving to make All Aboard Opera! an innovative opera company, for which we have three goals: accessibility, innovation, adventure. Every project we undertake has to tick those three boxes. Before we start work on a show, concert, or an educational project we always ensure that we’re meeting those aims. Are we making it as easy as editorial@weekender.co.uk

possible for people to experience opera? Are we experimenting and pushing boundaries of a traditionally rigid and staid art form?

And, most importantly, are we and the audience having fun? Experimenting with tradition and convention is a big part of what we do, but the end goal has always been to leave our audiences with a smile on their faces and a different impression of what ‘opera’ is, and can be, when they leave.

HOM: What made you choose to adapt Henry Purcell’s classic opera Dido and Aeneas for your latest production?

KB: Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas is definitely one of the most familiar pieces in the canon; even if you’ve never seen an opera in your life, you’ll probably recognise those iconic opening notes to ‘Dido’s Lament’. It’s a beautiful opera with a gorgeous score that allows performers and creatives to play with the characters – none of whom are set in stone. Purcell leaves room in the text for new ideas to be explored and for different directions to be taken with the story.

HOM: And how is it for your cast to perform? www.weekender.co.uk

KB: Dido and Aeneas is a great one for young singers, and a huge part of the All Aboard Opera! ethos is to provide opportunities to young singers and creatives at the start of their careers. Not to mention it’s a very short opera, with a strong and concise storyline; in many ways it’s the perfect way to introduce new fans to the world of opera, and we’re hoping that it makes a decent debut production.

HOM: Yours isn’t a straight up production of the story though. You’re allowing the audience to steer the fate of the characters at several turns. Why? KB: From a storytelling standpoint, this opera is fundamentally about fate, and how minute choices can result in huge consequences. Everyone is familiar with the heartbroken Queen left behind by her wandering Prince, but is that the only ending? The audience chooses the route this story will take, and in so doing, can fully appreciate the inner workings of its characters and experience them as fully-fledged humans.

HOM: So it’s an immersive opera? I can’t imagine there’s many of those out there!

KB: Immersive theatre, and especially Game Theatre, is something I’ve been particularly passionate about for quite some time. I wrote my final dissertation project on the relationship (or lack thereof) between the hugely popular world of Game theatre and the British opera industry. There are some opera companies who are starting to experiment with form and structure, and dipping their toes into the world of immersive theatre, but it’s definitely new ground for opera. I believe that we’re only the second opera company in England to stage a choose-your-own-adventure opera.

HOM: How does this ‘choose your own adventure’ element of the narrative work in practice? How many endings are there?

KB: The audience is involved at every stage of the storytelling process, joining the cast as judges. Before the show even starts, they are given the choice: do you want to support Queen Dido or The Sorceress? That one decision will influence the rest of the show – before the cast even sets foot on stage. There is a very extensive and complicated map involved, that Emily – our unbelievably organised producer and emcee – will be keeping an eye on during the show. editorial@weekender.co.uk

Essentially, at the end of every scene, the audience is presented with two choices; they then vote on what they want to happen next, and our cast then continues with that chosen scene. It means that no show will be the same, and that different audiences will experience different stories.

HOM: You’ve employed an all female cast to bring the story to life. What does this add to the story?

KB: As women in an industry that is still largely dominated by men, Emily and I really wanted to shine a spotlight on female power and female struggle. At its heart, this opera is about the divide between two very powerful women: Queen Dido, and her nemesis The Sorceress.

We’ve taken a lot of elements from the original myth, Virgil’s Aeneid, to give both of these women more depth and character than is conventional. The controversial decision, if you can call it that, has been to cast Aeneas as a woman. Aeneas is never really a central figure in Purcell’s opera, which is partly the reason we’ve named our version Dido instead of Dido and Aeneas. The focus is very much on Queen Dido, and her relationships with Belinda and The Sorceress.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope audiences take away from seeing your take on Dido and Aeneas?

KB: This is opera as you’ve never seen it before. For new opera fans, we sincerely hope that you can lose any preconceptions about opera that you might have; opera is a joyous, rich tapestry of stories, and we hope to have the opportunity to demonstrate that. Opera lovers, come in with an open mind. Yes, we’re changing things: gender bending, adding some script and reordering scenes, handing power over to the audience, but we’re doing this to reinvigorate a story we both love so much. Traditionally staged opera is wonderful, but that’s not what we do, and we’re proud to be offering unusual interpretations of beloved stories.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Royal Borough of Greenwich who need to carry out a crane operation.

History

The ancient Stowage road We are almost at the end of our trip along the wharves of Deptford Creek – I went up the Greenwich bank of the Creek as far as Lewisham Bridge, turned round and came back down again on our journey towards the Thames. Last week we arrived at Creek Road and the lifting Bridge – that leaves just the last little bit of Creekside to follow between the road bridge and the Thames. This short final stretch has a couple of very important sites as well as some of general interest – the East India Company, General Steam Navigation and a lot of coal wharves. Holding it all together and the oldest part of the area is The Stowage.

As I described last week the road bridge itself dates from the earliest days of the 19th century and so is a relative latecomer to the Creek. The Creek itself flows under the bridge heading northwards to the Thames.

But, having passed under the bridge it turns leftwards, to the west and then swings round to the right as it reaches the major river. This means that the first few wharves on this west bank of the Creek are more or less parallel with Creek Road. I call it the ‘west bank’ because it is no longer ‘the Lewisham bank’ – in these lowest reaches of the Creek we are back in Greenwich on both sides of the waterway.

Mary Mills management of the General Steam Navigation Company but –although Christopher Philpotts didn’t say so - this appears to be a different property. He said that attached to the older house was a long wharf of 104 feet along the Creek along with other houses, warehouses, and sheds. It appears to have stood roughly where Greenwich Quays is - perhaps near Hoy Stairs.

These first wharves of the Creek in this final section lie on a small strip of land and are thus fairly small. Today they are used as sites of smallish blocks of flats.

Historically their address was in a road called Stowage – a local road so ancient that its origins are far from clear.

Today Stowage is a road running parallel to Creek Road - still on much of its traditional line - from what is now Glasier Street to St.Nicholas’ Church.

It’s full of those pink flats and houses which developers seem to like these days and I hope residents won’t mind me saying it has a bit of a back street feel to it. Stowage has a long history and there have been many changes.

In the not-too-distant past Stowage was a road which began in Creek Road alongside The Hoy Canteen and ran along the side of the Creek before it turned west on what now remains of its route as I described above. This short stretch of road from Creek Road is now apparently called Greenwich Quays. I am unable to resist pointing out that ‘quays’ is not the word used traditionally for riverside areas in London - they are generally called ‘wharves’. I think ‘quays’ may be an American usage and anyway I guess developers think it sounds posher. I also can’t resist remembering the change, just up the road, of ‘Surrey Docks’ to ‘Surrey editorial@weekender.co.uk

Quays’ and all the grumbling that went on about that! Anyway we seem to have lost the traditional name for that short stretch of road which was part of Stowage and the addresses of those wharves between the Creek and Creek Road were numbered in Stowage.

There has been a lot of speculation about the name ‘Stowage’ which goes back many centuries. Generally it www.weekender.co.uk

has been taken to mean some sort of storage area. However a different account was put forward by the late Christopher Philpotts in his unpublished work on Deptford Creek and its archaeology. He said that it was ’one of the mediaeval lanes of Deptford’ but that the reason for its distinctive route running north off Creek Road and then turning abruptly west is not clear.

He thought it might have been a path

following an early river embankment, now lost, or perhaps was it just a lane to access the marshlands on the riverside. He said that The Stowage was in fact a property which existed by 1397, which was still there in 1515 and in the late 16th century. It is mentioned in documents about repairs to the river walls along the creek. We know that a house called The Stowage was in use during the 19th century for the

I have found no mention of this house anywhere else and so it is to a certain extent a mystery to me. Unfortunately Christopher Philpotts is no longer with us although I am assured he was a meticulous researcher and almost certain to be right. But I can’t ask him where his information about it came from. In 1608 a team of officials went round Deptford to establish who was on which bit of property and who owned what, and who paid rent to whom. It’s a long list and I can’t see in it any mention of a property called ‘Stowage’ although, to be fair, there were some awkward residents who ‘doth denye to shewe theire evedence to us’. One of these was ‘in Deptford Strand three Cottages & a Stoor Howse garden & wharfe’.

Later in 1768 a newspaper report describes how a ‘waterman and three men dressed as sailors’ had entered Stowage House – beating the mistress, breaking the windows, destroying the plates and bottles and destroying the liquors’. Hang on! ‘bottles.. liquors’ – so Stowage House must have been a pub.

History of fishermen heard the noise, came in to rescue ‘the mistress and her maid’ and ‘gave the sailors a drubbing’.

Even more mysteriously - Christopher Philpotts’ sketch map of the area of Deptford Creek which covers Stowage shows a ‘canal’ going roughly from the site of Stowage House towards the copperas works. I can find nothing else about this ‘canal’ at all, not even in his manuscript. In the sketch it looks quite substantial but strangely it does not have an outlet on the creek nor does it seem to go anywhere. I would love to have some explanation of this.

I understand that there was some sort of archaeological assessment done in this area by a local archaeology team but that it is not available - so if anyone knows please tell us.

If I had just seen this feature on the sketch map, without the word ’canal’ above it, I would have guessed it be a long straight rope walk. A lot of rope would be needed in a maritime area and rope makers walked 30 miles or so backwards everyday to make it – hence they are called ‘rope walks’. Christopher Philpotts gave some details about rope walks here in the 17th and 18th centuries which stretched northwards towards the River. Nearby was an area called Ropemakers Fields and there were two more works near Flaggon Row, which is today’s McMillan Street Before Creek Bridge was built there was, of course, a ferry service across the creek. I wrote about this in my

article on the Creek Road crossing in May 2021. The map shows that the ferry went between sets of watermen’s stairs on the both sides of the Creek.

In fact the map shows that on the Deptford side there were two sets of stairs. I’m not sure what the second steps were for or exactly where they were. The other set of stairs still exist and are called the Hoy Inn Stairs and have some sort of relationship to what was The Hoy Inn in Creek Road. The Hoy was closed down following police complaints about drug taking, fights and so on and was almost immediately replaced by the Hoy kitchen - a café which remains in business to this day.

I assume that the steps were named after the inn and I wonder if there was some sort of relationship between the pub and the ferry. Did the pub act as an agency for the ferry or did they collect the fares or maybe control the use of it?

I’m intrigued by a website run by the Friends of Deptford Creek. They describe how as recent development proceeded in Stowage the Hoy’s owners took action to preserve the steps from developers and parked a number of cars on it to stop misuse (I think those cars might still be there!) The web site goes to say that ‘land which had always been linked to The Hoy was assumed to be part of the property development package’ ... it triggered a fight to hold onto access and the historical Hoy steps’. What does this mean?

Does ownership of the Hoy convey some sort of customary rights with enough clout to see off a developer

intent on doing what developers do? I would love to know more.

The Creek users web site goes on to say that ‘banks of the creek were lined with crumbing wharf buildings and abandoned factories’ and this was only too true. Even in the 19th century this short stretch of wharves between the Stowage and the creek was mainly used for coal transshipment and scrap. In the twentieth century this began to be replaced by scrap metal operations. On maps the site nearest the road is marked in the 1900s as ‘Frogham Wharf’ and I have been at a loss to discover what it was used for – and it is a tiny site. As the web site goes on to point out that ‘now stacked steel, aluminium and glass tower .. leaving those at ground level increasingly in the shade’.

As ever I have found newspaper reports on Stowage. In 1775 there were fields nearby from where a horse has strayed ‘ a brown mare ‘her wind a little touched and a shoe a little loose’. They thought she might have gone Canterbury! Later, and sadly, in 1863 a little girl of seven was left by her mother on the sofa with a friend in Stowage. She got up to stir some rice on the fire, and she was wearing a crinoline. She ran out into the street in flames but could not be saved.

Next week I hope I can find some wharves where work was more than transshipment of coal and/or scrap.
