As seen on screen in the 2010 film of the same name, the plot tells the tale of the 1968 strike at the Ford Dagenham car plant, where female workers walked out in protest against sexual discrimination. Sky-high dining returns to the O2 Thrill seekers, this one’s for you: London in the Sky returns to Greenwich’s O2 with an extended summer season, raising a table of brave diners 100ft in the air so they can enjoy a meal with a (hashtag) view.

Breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner sittings are all available, as are slots for cocktails and afternoon tea. But what if you need the loo, drop your phone or, er, have a panic attack? Holly O’Mahony asks Kate Rogan, Events Director at London In The Sky, those all-important questions… writes Holly O’Mahony…

Holly O’Mahony: Firstly what’s new for London in the Sky this year?

Kate Rogan: We are back with all of our popular experiences – Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Cocktails and Dinner. Each flight boasts a brand new menu! We are also opening for our longest run yet which is really exciting.

HOM: New menus! How tantalising.

What are some of the standout dishes?

KR: London catering company Dish are back with us this year working on the menus. Visitors can expect Mediterranean vibes, including a breakfast and brunch dish of ‘cannellini bean ragu served with spicy plantbased sausage and spinach’; a lunch dish of ‘roasted salmon served with paprika boulangère potatoes, burnt onion ketchup, asparagus and a dill cream sauce’; an afternoon tea featuring sandwiches served with a grilled mediterranean vegetable and pesto tartlet; and a vegetarian

dinner dish of ‘roasted cauliflower and romanesco served with burnt shallot petals, brassicas puree, minted peas, crispy shallot and a potato crumb’.

HOM: What are you most looking forward to about getting diners up in the air again?

KR: We are looking forward to the good vibes! Everyone at London in the Sky always has such great energy, people are often celebrating something and have all come together for a day out with their friends and family. It’s such a great buzz to be around.

HOM: What’s the biggest logistical challenge of the experience? If I were dining in the sky, I’d be worried about needing the loo.

KR: To be honest the whole thing is one big logistical challenge! Cooking and serving up three course meals 100ft in the sky certainly isn’t easy but we’ve mastered it. Though there

is no toilet in the sky, with flights being a maximum of 45 minutes, we usually avoid any disasters there!

HOM: Are falling plates, cutlery and the odd potato a risk at all for those walking below? How do you manage that?

KR: Falling plates and cutlery does happen but we have a big safety zone under the tables which no one can enter when the tables are in the sky, so if anyone does drop their napkin, fork, phone (yes, there has been a few phones) then we know it’s not going to do any damage – other than to itself!

HOM: What would you say to nervous ‘flyers’ embarking on their first sky-high meal?

KR: Have a drink before and you’ll be fine! The experience is a lot more stable than you might expect, it isn’t a ride that moves around a lot so once you’re up in the sky it’s easy to forget about the height and just enjoy the spectacular views.

We get a fair amount of nervous flyers who always come down having had the best time. Our staff are great at making people feel at ease, and if you’re not enjoying it you don’t have to stay up there.

We usually encourage diners to grab a poncho, a drink and trust that they will still have an amazing time.

HOM: Oh, that’s a relief. Although I’d hate to be the person responsible for bringing the table down early! So when is the best, or most pictureperfect, time to dine in the sky?

HOM: Such are the joys of planning with the great British weather!

Lastly, what do you hope visitors take away from the experience?

It’s got to be quite empowering for those scared of heights…

KR: It has to be our Sunset Dinner.

These evening flights deliver some truly spectacular views which are pretty special and provide the perfect golden hour photo moment for our diners.

HOM: What happens if it rains? Does the experience still go ahead?

KR: Being an outdoor dining experience we are open to the elements, and of course at the mercy of the great British weather. There is a roof over the table which means we can operate in full in the rain (although this doesn’t mean editorial@weekender.co.uk

KR: We hope visitors take away the memories! We want the experience to be something they’ll never forget. It’s incredibly endorphin boosting so we know most diners will walk away feeling great.

‘East London grit meets West End pzazz’ – Director Molly Beth Morossa on Woolwich Works’ cabaret: The Grotteaux

Postponed from Christmas because of the pandemic, raucous cabaret group Shotgun Carousel are finally presenting their latest extravaganza, The Grotteaux, in Woolwich.

(The name might sound Christmassy, but don’t worry, the winter cobwebs have been blown away to give the show a springtime makeover.) The immersive entertainment specialists have swapped their former home down in the underground tunnels of Waterloo for the airy, open-plan expanse of new arts venue Woolwich Works, taking with them their signature burlesque and cabaret skills, their penchant for all-encompassing design and their infectious, inclusive sense of fun.

Holly O’Mahony spoke to longstanding company member and director of The Grotteaux, Molly Beth Morossa, to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: You describe your new show The Grotteaux as ‘The Muppet Show [crossed with] world class performers, kick-ass cabaret, and a healthy dose of festive magic”.

It sounds like there’s a lot going on!

What can audiences expect from it?

Molly Beth Morossa: The idea is that this is a place where all are welcome and there’s something for everyone. Set in our fictional speakeasy, the show is an anachronistic explosion of joy, with hints of Victorian music hall, 80s pop and 20s glamour amongst other things. There will be burlesque, drag, cabaret, comedy and live music from our newly formed house band, led by the outrageously talented Porscha Present. Think east london grit meets West End pzazz, and a celebration of the various heritages of our spectacular cast.

HOM: Presumably The Grotteaux was conceived in lockdown? How have the last two years been for Shotgun Carousel? As a company used to creating large-scale immersive productions in indoor settings, it must have been a sort of balm for your imaginations, conjuring your next big show in the dreary months at home?

MBM: Well, it sure has been a wild ride!

been challenging in many different ways.

We spent the first year or so in a kind of hibernation, recharging our creative batteries. We then spent 2021 cooking up The Grotteaux, which was due to run last Christmas but was postponed last minute because of concerns over Covid cases creeping up again.

HOM: You’ve previously staged works of this scale at The Vaults at Waterloo. What made you decide to stage your latest at new performance venue Woolwich Works?

MBM: I’ll start by saying that the Vaults is a wonderful venue, and we will always hold a special place for it in our hearts.

It’s always fulfilling to shake things up creatively, and the team at Woolwich Works are wonderful collaborators. We’re really committed to making cabaret accessible to everyone, and Woolwich Works has completely step-free access to the auditorium, so we’re looking forward to welcoming new friends from the disabled community who might have previously been unable to see our work. Also the brownies in the café are phenomenal!

HOM: The venue being further out, are you confident that it will attract similar footfall to your previous shows?

MBM: It only takes about 20 minutes to get to Woolwich Arsenal on a train from London Bridge, and I think that people will travel for the spectacular evening of cabaret that we have in store for them. You can also arrive in style by boat on the Thames Clipper, which you can hop on all along the Thames.

They have bars on board too, so you can get into the festive spirit en route!

HOM: Speaking of drinks, your previous shows including Divine Proportions placed as much emphasis on the sustenance and setting as the performance element.

Is this the case for The Grotteaux too?

MBM: The Grotteaux is different to our previous works and isn’t a dining experience. Instead, we’re presenting a sit down cabaret extravaganza for which our design team will be transforming the stage with our signature Shotgun flair – in fact, the stage itself is almost like another character in the show. Between the space and the live band, audiences can expect to be enveloped in the vibrancy.

HOM: But there will still be drinks available, right? Some of us might want some Dutch courage before a night of burlesque…

MBM: This being our first production without dinner, we’re handing over the refreshments side of things to the wonderful team at Woolwich Works, who have a café and bar right outside the auditorium. If their brownies are anything to go by, guests are in for an absolute treat! The venue is also a charity, and all profits from the bars and café support their mission to offer opportunities to the local community. So every sip of that delicious mimosa will taste all the sweeter.

HOM: Absolutely! So is there a plot to The Grotteaux, or is it more a string of burlesque, cabaret and circus stunts?

MBM: It’s a mixture of both, really. The production takes the form of a classic mixed bill variety show, with our incredible house cast performing speciality acts, including in burlesque, cabaret and drag.

But there is magic that weaves these acts together: the cast present like a family, and the relationships between the performers is almost like a show within a show. It’s as much about what happens in between the acts as the acts themselves.

We’re so excited to welcome performers including comedians Shaparak Khorsandi and Rosie Jones, circus performer Symoné, musical cabaret artists Bourgeois & Maurice, and magicians The Glamourists, to name but a few! As for whether we have any other surprises up our sequin-studded sleeves? Well you’ll have to come along and find out.

HOM: It all sounds very exciting.

Finally, what lasting memories do you hope the audience takes away?

MBM: The Grotteaux is, at its heart, a celebration. This show celebrates our differences and reminds us that kindness, tolerance and inclusivity are our greatest weapons in difficult times. When audiences step into the world of The Grotteaux, we hope to instil a sense of togetherness and joy that will stay long after they’re back in the real world. Also glitter. LOTS of glitter!

HOM: Can you hint at any further surprises to expect from the night?

Carrying on the Royal celebrations over the Jubilee weekend, the Royal Borough of Greenwich will be hosting its very own Platinum Picnic in the Park, from 12 noon to 4pm on Friday 3 June in Charlton Park. The event will have large areas for families to enjoy food and drinks, while they watch performances from Royal Greenwich Festival partners.

Lighting the beacon On Thursday 2 June, Her Majesty The Queen marks 70 years as our Monarch.

We will be joining the rest of the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories and capital cities of Commonwealth countries, in lighting a beacon.

More than 1,500 beacons will be lit in sync, in tribute to her Majesty as part of the official Platinum Jubilee Weekend.

The beacon lighting will be at 9.45pm in General Gordon Square on Thursday 2 June.

There are picnic benches at the events, available on a first come, first served basis.

History

The sweet smell of success Mary Mills Last week I wrote about the 17th century copperas works on Deptford Creek and some of the things which resulted from that.

What became known as Copperas Wharf, which is now the site of the Laban Centre, was used as the site of the old Board of Works depot in the 19th an 20th centuries? There also seems to have been paint and colour works there - but I’ll come back to that in a future week.

The next site going north was Wheen’s soapworks. They were there from 1849 - but who was there before them?

In accounts of their history Wheen themselves always said that they took over the site from a pin factory. Well, I’ve found no trace of a pin factory in the area – and have some doubts if this is a suitable site for such a works anyway. What we do have is a drawing of an incredibly large and grand works on what is clearly the site which became Wheen’s. The drawing is dated as 1841 which means that it was built for someone else – and surely that wasn’t a pin factory!

It appears that on the site of what became Wheen’s Soap Works some eight years before them was the ‘Ravensbourne Wood Mills’. The advertisements for the Mills’ sale in 1843 make it sound pretty grand with an ‘engine room, noble sawing room, lofty planing room’ and so on’.

Ravensbourne Saw Mills seem to have been a partnership between a John Poyer Poyer and a William Hickling Burnett.

If you look up William Hickling Burnett on the net there are many art dealers’ advertisements which describe him as an important British Artist ‘active 1844-1860’.

However someone of the same name had in earlier years taken out patents for many devices, including wood working and sawing machinery. In 1851 he describes himself as a ‘retired civil engineer’ born in Portugal. The other partner, John Poyer Poyer, came from Barbados and had considerable links with slavery. There are also a number of newspaper reports of legal actions where he seeks to dissolve his partnership with Burnett and they describe how he was persuaded to back plans for Burnett’s patented machinery – but it was never actually built. Did he, I wonder, finance this grandiose factory building? He certainly owned some of the land since there is a later report of

his children leasing the site to Wheen’s.

Well – then I think we can all get the picture of what was going on! The only thing is – is William Hickling Burnett, the artist, the same man? Did he take up art in retirement – and perhaps make a better job of it than designing machinery?

So this grand factory building was taken over by Wheen’s in the late 1840s and it became their soapworks. Soap isn’t really something we associate with Deptford – although there were other big works nearby. One in particular was the huge Soames site on the Greenwich Peninsula – and I have written elsewhere about the Hawes soap works in Southwark where they also made gas for lighting the works with oil unsuitable for soap.

There had been at least one previous soap maker in Deptford. He was a Mr. Dommet – although I am not sure if his works was actually on the Creek itself.

Soap was liable for tax in the early 9th century and in 1823 Dommet had been subject to a raid by the officers of the Excise who then discovered a trap door ‘under a heap of brick rubbish’ in his works. Twenty feet down were several tons of soap, which was liable for tax.

Unable to arrest Dommet on the premises they nabbed him in the street outside – his defence was well I can’t help it’.

Six years later he was fined £500 for again evading paying tax on his soap. £500 in 1820 is about £47,000 in today’s money – so how much soap was this man making and how much tax was he actually getting away with not paying?

Wheen’s were much more respectable and were a major Deptford industry for just over 100 years. Neil Rhind wrote a short history of the Wheen family in Blackheath which was published in 2019 in the Greenwich Industrial History blog https://greenwichindustrialhistory.

did rather better on local smells than on health and safety for the workforce.

Neil’s interest was in the residence of Richard Wheen at Colonnade House which is the big posh house opposite the duck pond in South Row just round from the Princess of Wales pub. It is let into flats these days but there are still lots of bushes in front of it, so it’s quite difficult to see. It is however one of the grandest of Blackheath houses.

The raw materials used for soap were basically fats of various sorts. Wheen’s used imported cottonseed and other vegetable oils and but their main source of supply was fat from various sources –including great quantities of beef fat from the Deptford Metropolitan meat markets. In the 1850s Richard Wheen was advertising for ‘butchers’ fat’ which would be called for daily 'all over town' and for which he was offering contracts. 100 years later, in the 1950s, Pat O’ Driscoll interviewed to Jack McAuliffe who had worked for Wheen’s for many years. He described how the fat taken from cattle slaughtered at the foreign cattle market in Deptford was used for soap. In his early days at the works he saw it was arrive there by horse and cart – he saw the carts getting stuck in the muddy ruts of Copperas Street and watched men from the works move them on with crow bars.

The Wheen family soap works had originated in Finsbury in 1769 and then been moved to Ratcliffe Highway where it flourished. By 1837 it was being run by two brothers – Richard and John- and they were manufacturing 645 tons of soap in 1834 rising within a year to 750 tons. They decided that despite the success of the works the profits would not support two families, so the works was split and Richard came to open his works in Deptford. To be perfectly honest he moved to Colonnade House from an address in Regents Park so his assessment of having only just enough to live on must have been for a life style with demands rather larger than most of us would expect – although as he had 11 children I suppose they came expensive, particularly as he needed seven servants to care for them all.

Richard Wheen moved his soap works to Deptford in 1849 and apparently it did well from the start. Five years later he was offering a ‘good bright yellow soap’ for export at £22 a tub. Sadly at around the same time an accident took place in the works when James Welch walked along the edge of a vat of boiling soap.

His foot slipped and he fell in head first.

He died later in Saint Thomas’s hospital - without the slightest hope that he could live. The local Board of Works Inspector paid a visit to the factory in the same year. The Board members had been very concerned at the number of very smelly works in the Creek and had found some very bad practices, with resulting bad smells on works adjacent to Wheen’s on both sides. Wheen’s got off lightly with a report of ‘only a slight effluvia from a vat continuing kitchen stuff'. So they

This process is said to have been of great help to the growing margarine manufacturing trade. The Deptford factory was well able to undertake such experiments with their ‘highly qualified chemist’ and ‘well-appointed laboratory’.

Jack McAuliffe also told Pat O’ Driscoll about an old ship’s bell installed on a post in the works which signaled the beginning and end of the working day.

He said there had been a plaque on it with the name of the ship it came from.

He wondered if anyone could remember what it was. He also said the steam engine at Wheen’s had come from Brunel’s Great Eastern when she was broken up in 1889. It wasn’t the main engine but one of the smaller ones – he wondered about the truth of that too.

In 1912 there was a big fire in the works reckoned to do damage worth £20,000. It was in a range of buildings but doesn’t say which ones they were.

it still took a couple of hours before the fireman got the fire under control the buildings. It was reported that this was in the middle of an icy winter and water froze as it fell on the firemen’s clothes.

Richard Wheen himself became even more prosperous and eventually moved to Keston with his 11 children. In retirement he enjoyed many activities and which included shooting in Scotland. He later moved to Tunbridge Wells where he died leaving £50,000. The business was carried on by three of his sons Richard Francis and Charles and they were followed by other descendants.

It always was a family firm.

In the Second World War Wheen’s continued to make soap in the factory which survived various bombing attacks with explosive bombs and rockets – alas also remember that the homes of most of the work force suffered bomb damage.

At one point it was discovered when a boiler was cleared that an incendiary bomb had got mixed up with the coal and burnt along with it. They produced soap which went to the rationed British population but also made special soaps for the forces – salt water soap to use in the desert, special soap for the Far East. They made soaps for the NAAFI and for pit head baths as well as for refugees in central Europe.

Wheen’s survived after the War to take part in a Greenwich manufacturer’s exhibition where their stand featured obelisks carved out of soap. Their brands then were: Wheen’s Washer, Refined Primrose, Pearly Soap Flakes, Gazelle Health Soap, Superb Toilet Soap and a lawn tennis ball cleaner. I particularly like the sound of Wheen’s 'Fearless Carbolic' - I always did say that up until the 1960s soap had to be a no-nonsense germ killer and what else it killed was neither here nor there and so what if it left your hands like a nutmeg grater!

public notices DESIGNATION OF AN AREA FOR SELECTIVE LICENSING Royal Borough of Greenwich, in exercise of its powers under section 80 of the Housing Act 2004 (“the Act”), hereby gives notice that a designation has been made for selective licensing of the area of the Royal Borough of Greenwich described in paragraph 4.

1. This designation may be cited as the Royal Borough of Greenwich Designation of an Area for Selective Licensing 2022.

2. This designation is made on 31 March 2022 and shall come into force on 1 October 2022.

3. This designation shall cease to have effect on 1 October 2027 or earlier if the Council revokes the scheme under section 84 of the Act. 4. This designation shall apply to the five Council ward areas of Parts of Plumstead, Glyndon, Shooters Hill, Woolwich Common and Woolwich Riverside as delineated and edged red on the map at Annex A. 5. This designation applies to any house where the whole of it is occupied under a single tenancy or licence, or under two or more tenancies or licences in respect of different dwellings contained in it, within the area described in paragraph 4 unless a) the house is a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) and is required to be licensed under Part 2 of the Act; b) the tenancy or licence of the house has been granted by a registered social landlord; c) the house is subject to an Interim or Final Management Order under Part 4 of the Act; d) the house is subject to a temporary exemption under section 86 of the Act; or e) the house is occupied under a tenancy or licence which is exempt under the Act or the occupation is of a building or part of a building so exempt as defined in The Selective Licensing of Houses (Specified Exemptions) (England) Order 2006 – SI 370/2006.

6. Royal Borough of Greenwich will comply with the notification requirements contained in section 83 of the Act and shall maintain a register of all houses registered under this designation, as required under section 232 of the Act. This designation falls within the description of designations in relation to which the Secretary of State has given a general approval under section 58 of the Housing Act 2004, namely The Housing Act 2004: Licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation and Selective Licensing of Other Residential Accommodation (England) General Approval 2015 which came into force on the 1st April 2015.

Upon the designation coming into force on 1 October 2022, A person having control of or managing a licensable property must apply to Royal Borough of Greenwich for a licence. Failure to apply for a licence in the designated area is an offence under Section 95(1) of the Housing Act 2004, punishable on conviction by payment of an unlimited fine. In addition, they may be required to repay up to 12 months’ rent if the tenant or the Council, in the case of housing benefit payments, apply to the Residential Property Tribunal under the provisions of section 96 and section 97 of the Housing Act 2004 for a rent repayment order. No notice under section 21 of the Housing Act 1988 may be given in relation to an assured shorthold tenancy of the whole or part of an unlicensed house so long as it remains an unlicensed house.

A tenancy or licence of a house or a dwelling within a house where – (i) the person who has granted the tenancy or licence to occupy is a member of the family of the person who has been granted the tenancy or licence and (ii) the person who has granted the tenancy or licence to occupy is the freeholder or long leaseholder of the house or dwelling and (iii) the person occupies the house or dwelling as his only or main residence (and if there are two or more persons at least one of them so occupies).

Holiday lets 8. A tenancy or licence of a house or a dwelling within a house that has been granted to the person for the purpose of a holiday.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make three Orders to accommodate carriageway resurfacing works or carriageway maintenance under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

The effect of the Order would be to temporarily: a) prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in the roads or lengths of road specified in the Schedule to this Notice.

The above restrictions would only apply at such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by the placing or covering of the appropriate traffic signs.

Whilst the closures are in operation, vehicular access to properties affected by these works would be maintained wherever possible subject to the extent and operations of the works. Alternative routes for diverted vehicles would be available via local roads and would be indicated via local signage.

The Order would come into force on 26th May 2022 and would continue in force for up to 18 months, or until the works have been completed, whichever is the sooner.
