Theatre remembers the Leeds clothworkers’ strike You’ll probably remember the story behind 2010 movie Made in Dagenham, where Sally Hawkins plays Rita O’Grady, the brave woman who encouraged Ford’s female employees to strike for being considered unskilled labourers. But what about the clothworkers strike in Leeds, 1970? It encouraged thousands of women to strike until they received equal pay, yet little is said about it today. Bringing the story to the Greenwich Theatre stage 50 years after it took place is writer Millie Gaston and producer Rachael Halliwell. Shake the City is the story of female friendship, empowerment and grit.

No Bad Apples: New musical about The Osmonds to rock Churchill Theatre stage

They rose from obscurity in Utah to be one of the bestknown boy bands in America in the 1970s. They grew in size too, as more brothers joined the band, eventually becoming a quintet of singing siblings. Their hits including ‘Puppy Love’, ‘One Bad Apple’ and ‘Love Me For A Reason’ can still fill a dance floor and have found new audiences through the decades. But according to a new musical pioneered by brother Jay, one bad decision fractured the brothers’ relationship with one another and nearly cost them everything. To hear the full story, though, you’ll have to see the show. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Jamie Chatterton, who plays Alan Osmond in the show, to find out more…

A child of the noughties, Jamie Chatterson didn’t grow up listening to The Osmonds. Like many musical theatre lovers of his generation, the 22-year-old first came across brother Donny, who went on to achieve further stardom in the 90s playing the lead in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Jamie knew a few of the band’s songs, of course, but not their story.

“There is so much to learn because

it’s such an incredible story,” he tells me, when we speak over the phone ahead of the show’s arrival in Bromley.

Jamie, along with his co-stars Ryan Anderson (Merrill), Alex Lodge (Jay), Joseph Peacock (Donny) and Danny Nattrass (Wayne), are not only responsible for bringing to life the brothers’ story each night, musicals about bands like The Osmonds require the cast to effectively stage a convincing tribute concert – one that will ring true to the band’s core fans.

“It’s difficult,” Jamie admits. “We’re playing [instruments] but we’re not plugged in, there’s a support band, but we still play the instruments, sing and dance as if we were a real band,” he explains. “This show is as much about seeing The Osmonds live as it is the musical. When we see people reliving their childhood, people who were there when The Osmonds were really thriving, it’s so special.”

The show was masterminded by Jay Osmond, who wrote the script

together with musical supervisor and co-writer Julian Bigg, and it’s written from his perspective of growing up as part of the group. “He’s been with us throughout the process. To learn from a person who was really there, it doesn’t get better than that. We’ve been very lucky to build our characters off his experience,” says Jamie.

What inspired Jay to write a musical about the band’s experiences? “I think he just feels like it’s a good time for people to hear the family story and see what happened behind the scenes,” muses the actor. “He thought now was the right time to let the fans in.”

Interestingly, given the group is American and its members now all live in the United States, Jay was keen to make the musical with a UK production company. “He’s a huge fan of the UK,” laughs Jamie. “Also, The Osmonds’ following over here is huge,” he says, hinting that he’s hopeful there could be a US leg of the tour on the horizon, once the nine-month UK tour concludes.

Nine months is a long first professional acting gig for Jamie, who is making his professional debut in The Osmonds having graduated from Chiswick-based drama school ArtsEd last summer. He’s not taking it for granted though. “It’s been a very special experience for me; getting to step up and be one of the lead five roles in a musical isn’t something that editorial@weekender.co.uk

happens often, so I’m very lucky,” he says, humbly. “Also, getting to tour the country at 22 isn’t a bad thing.”

The role was hard-won. Having been put forward for the part by his agent, Jamie auditioned seven or eight times (he can’t remember exactly), with multiple rounds of singing, dancing and acting. “They chipped away and we ended up as us five boys,” he recalls, fondly.

Fortunately, all five leads really do get along like brothers. “We clicked straight away and we get on like a house on fire,” he grins. “We’re genuinely like brothers. We have the odd little spat and we clear it up right away. You become very tight when you’re with people every day.” A good thing too, given they’ve got another half a year together.

Their real-life friendship helps with on-stage chemistry. “You have to be close when you’re playing brothers, especially these brothers who spent all their time together.”

So far, Dublin has been the highlight stint for Jamie, but now he’s especially excited to bring the show to London, where he and the others will have friends watching. As for highlights from the show itself, the opening number, ‘One Way Ticket to Anywhere’ is Jamie’s favourite.

energy off right,” he reasons.

Another peak for Jamie comes at the end, when the band are coming back together following the feud which threatened to split them up forever. This feud is hinted at in the show description but remains shrouded in a certain amount of mystery. What actually happened?

Jamie pauses. “What I can say is they worked very hard through their lives, they lost it all and had to work it up again.” That loss was both financial and reputational, but to find out more, Jamie insists audiences will have to come and see the show – the full story is one of its big selling points, after all.

Beyond the chance for audiences to learn about the band’s secrets, Jamie hopes the crowds leave with “an understanding of just how special their music was and how special they were as a band and group of people”. As for existing fans of the boy band, it’s about “reliving their youth” and taking that One Way Ticket to Anywhere.

Charlton House explores life in Greenwich

A new series of events at Charlton House and Gardens reflects on life in Greenwich through the ages, using objects and stories from the collection belonging to the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust (RGHT). Living in Greenwich: Meet the Collection kicks off with a Jacobean fayre (May 1), but also includes ‘reminiscence mornings’ on Tuesdays throughout the month, art workshops, guided walk-through tours, costumed family tours set in different periods, outdoor markets on the grounds and children’s trails.

Holly O’Mahony speaks to project lead Janet Denne, Head of Public Programming at RGHT, to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: You’re hosting a series of events throughout May to encourage locals and visitors to come and reflect on the experiences of Greenwich citizens throughout the ages. How did you go about curating the programme of events?

Janet Denne: We realised that much of our collection relates to how people have lived in the borough, and at the moment, because of the pandemic, people are very focussed on their homes. We used our collections to talk to community groups about how people have lived before them in Greenwich and talked to them about what home means to them.

HOM: How did you go about finding people to take part?

JD: From talking to community groups over the year, we collected quotes about what home meant to them. These are displayed on the walls of the study, and can be heard as you walk through the room.

HOM: There are art workshops too as part of the series…

JD: There are workshops led by the artists-in-residence, offering the chance to work with textile crafts and pottery to create something. We recruited two artists-in-residence to work with community groups to create two installations that will be on display in the Old Library at Charlton House and Gardens. One is the potter Fiona Veacock, who worked with a group at Mycenae House to produce a table of

crockery, food and quotes to represent how food is central to the home.

The second is CraftA, who worked with three groups, crochet and natter, Listening Ears and Community Direction, to create six hanging banners as a response to items in our collection and as a discussion on home, community, life and food.

HOM: The series kicks off with a Jacobean Fayre. What led you to look back on the Jacobean era for your opening event?

JD: Charlton House was built between 1607 – 1612, in the Jacobean period.

It is the finest example of a Jacobean Mansion in London, so it seemed fitting to host an event themed around that

era. It was built for Adam Newton, who worked for King James I, and was the tutor to his son, Prince Henry. On this day we will have costumed tours for families, led by the character Katherine Newton, who lived in this house until 1630.

HOM: The Meet the Collection series also includes ‘reminiscence mornings’?

What are some of the highlight items or aspects of home life that will be explored in these sessions?

JD: The Meet the Collection Tuesday reminiscence mornings will each explore a different aspect of life at home and in the borough – childhood homes, shopping, celebrations, cooking and eating, and the jubilee – through artefacts from the museum and the archive. There will be time for story sharing, object handling and singing.

These sessions will be run by the RGHT community outreach officer, archivist, and volunteers with previous reminiscence experience. We welcome carers, cared for, and anyone else that would like to remember days past. We will open from 11am, with activities running from 11.30M - 12.30PM, and tea and biscuits provided.

HOM: Sustainability is something we should be focusing on in all areas of life. What inspired you to weave it into the Meet the Collection series?

JD: Sustainability is something that is very relevant when looking after a 400-year-old house. When the house was built, sustainability would have been less of an issue as there was a kitchen garden for food, a dairy and woodlands to provide fuel. something that our conservation officers and gardeners are continually evaluating.

There will be talks by our in-house team on the day exploring our strategies.

HOM: Last time we spoke, you were adding new items to the collection that related to the experiences of Greenwich residents living through the pandemic. What’s it like looking back on those now?

JD: Through the pandemic, we began the project Living in Greenwich as an online exhibition and as part of this we collected audio recordings of locals talking about their experiences of the pandemic. It is interesting to read them now; Donald, the osteopath, talked about how our bodies were struggling with working from our sofas, and Barden, the greengrocer, spoke of delivering food to the community. Much has changed in the past year, but some things have stayed the same. It’s moving to hear them again. We are continuing to add to these, and have stories from Margaret Taylor from The Greenwich Talking Newspaper Association and young people from METRO Zest, a youth group for LGBTQ+ people under 16. They are a reminder of a very strange time, but for me, they show how resilient the community of Greenwich has been and how we have helped each other.

Help support the Charlton Upbeats!

The Charlton Upbeats programme is entirely funded by donations, so any amount you can give will make a huge difference.

The Upbeats Walk, sponsored by DNEL Events, is taking place this Saturday with 185 Charlton fans signed up to take part in the nine-mile walk from Charlton Athletic’s Training Ground in New Eltham to The Valley.

Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT) Upbeats programme for young people and adults with Down’s syndrome has been running for 14 years. The programme is entirely funded by voluntary donations.

CACT recently published a report evaluating the success of the Upbeats programme. The report saw the Upbeats themselves and various parents reflect on its impact.

Victoria Goldstone, whose son Perry has been part of the Upbeats since its launch in 2008, said: “What CACT provide to all of us has far exceeded anything you could imagine of a football team. We would never have this feeling, atmosphere, and family-feel elsewhere.”

Marilyn Peciuch, whose son Joe has been a Charlton Upbeat for 7 years, said: “Joe used to be supported by staff but has gained the confidence, understanding, and independence to travel on his own and that’s something we all hoped for. The Upbeats have been amazing in helping him achieve that.”

The report found that after attending the Upbeats sessions: • 100% of participants have improved their social skills, made new friends and improved their emotional wellbeing • 96% of Upbeat parents believe their relationship with their son/daughter has improved and strengthened • For every £1 spent on the Upbeats

programme, there is a social value of £11.70 added which is a fantastic net benefit of £270,923.

Charlton legends Bob Bolder, Paul Mortimer and Kim Dixson will be joining walkers on the nine-mile route from the Club’s Training Ground in New Eltham to The Valley.

Yann Kermorgant will be joining Charlton TV on the day and is hoping to greet the walkers at the finish line.

Just over halfway, the walkers will take a short break at Charlton Lido and Lifestyle Club, where they will be provided with refreshments courtesy of iPro Hydrate.

The walk is the annual fundraiser of the year which helps CACT to continue supporting the Upbeats and their families.

The Upbeats programme would not be able to continue running without the support of Charlton Athletic fans it has received over many years.

The Upbeats will be playing football matches from 1.30pm at The Valley ahead of kick-off. Make sure to head into the stadium early if you would like to watch them play!

History

A tragedy in the creek

Mary Mills Last week I covered the largest of the three Sun Wharves on the Creek, along with two of the small streets which divided the wharves on the site which is now the Cockpit Arts building. The final road, Dugald Street, lay between Sun Wharf and Kent Wharf.

It had previously been called Lime Street and newspaper reports show the same cycle as the other streets, of poverty. They record long prison sentences for things which often appear to be minor offences - but clearly weren’t if you lived in parts of Deptford.

Someone who got sentenced to a month’s hard labour for child neglect was George Plummer, who lived in Dugald Street. He is described as a ‘cattle drover’ with five children whose wife was in hospital with cancer. The National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children had found his young family in a filthy state – there was a vivid description given in the paper, including the maggots found on the baby. A lot of lurid detail about his failure to cope.

What happened to the children while he was in gaol isn’t mentioned.

Similarly Emily Carle of Dugald Street was committed for manslaughter following the death of her four-month old child from starvation. This also, bizarrely, led to a prison sentence for William Brown who was selling newspapers in the street and calling out ‘Horrible discovery in Douglas Street ‘. He was charged with giving out information which was not true - the Magistrate said that the starvation charge was not a ‘horrible discovery’ and in any case it was in Dugald not Douglas Street and so he was remanded in custody.

In other cases relating to residents of these street - Bridget Reeds was charged with obstruction in Douglas Street with three sacks of peas and 12 empty baskets. I assume that means she was some sort of market trader.

There were also charges relating to gambling– Isaac Craig was summoned for playing pitch and toss in Douglas Street and got three days inside. In a more complicated case Isaac Jefferies was arrested for loitering for the purpose of betting in Dugald Street and for acting as a bookmaker without a certificate.

He had previous convictions for this but was only fined for the loitering.

At the end of Dugald Street on the Creek was Kent Wharf, operated in the late 19th century by a Thomas Fogg. Like so many other creek side wharf operators in the 1880s he was manufacturing agricultural manure. He advertised for example: manures... in Dry and Fine Condition... concentrated and bone manures… turnip and mangold manure, superphosphate of lime’ Fogg described himself as an ‘analytical chemist’ and was a Fellow of the Chemical Society. He lived in

an upmarket house in the Paddington area initially with his widowed mother and later with his wife and daughter.

He seems to have moved onto Kent Wharf around 1860 and in 1861 applied to the Metropolitan Board of Works for permission to build a chimney shaft for his furnace. As with other manure manufacturers

he sold through local agents and advertised for ‘gentlemen desirous of acting as agents’ and ‘influential agents for unrepresented districts’.

He also produced an annual circular with particulars of all his manures along with a specially written paper on phosphates. He appears to have retired at sometime in the late 1890s. editorial@weekender.co.uk

After Fogg left Kent Wharf it seems to have been taken over by a hay merchant, Alfred May, who by 1913 was supplying forage to the Metropolitan Police Service. However throughout the 20th Century advertisements dealing with the wharf are for a wide range of activities and there seems to have been a number of different firms operating www.weekender.co.uk

History from there. In 1939 it is listed as a scrap depot in the ‘Britain needs your Scrap’ publicity campaign and after the Second World War someone there appeared to be selling Government surplus - secondhand tarpaulins and reconditioned bell tents with pegs and poles. An Edward Ash was selling firewood there in 1951 and in 1970 there were railway sleepers to dispose of. By 1971 the Wharf was disused and was taken over by Lewisham Council as part of their depot, which was further down the Creek.

Next door to Kent was another smaller Wharf, which is shown on the 1893 insurance maps as a boat builder’s firm owned by B. Jacob and Sons.

Jacobs has been founded in 1832 as a lighterage and steam tug business by Benjamin Jacob, who lived at Eureka House, New Cross Road - which fifteen or so years after his death became the site of the New Cross Empire.

Like his sons, who inherited his business, he was very much involved in local public life as a Guardian of the Greenwich Union, a churchwarden and a Mason. He was also Master of the Worshipful Company of Carpenters.

He had begun as a lighterman himself and built the business up from scratch and I guess that despite their claim to be boat builders that their business was mainly lighterage..

Later the Jacobs business was run by a younger Benjamin, who was to become the first Mayor of Deptford in 1900.

His brother Jessie was Mayor in 1906.

as lightermen and then became partners with their father in the family business. Both of them lived in the area - Benjamin in Lewisham Way and then Pepys Road and Jesse in Douglas Way and then Florence Road. A third generation of Jacobs followed on from them in Reginald who was Master of the Company of Watermen and Lightermen in 1922 – and the firm continued until 1968 when it was finally wound up.

(See Bill Ellson’s informative blog on Deptford Mayors http://deptfordmisc. blogspot.com/2010/05/jacobbrothers-mayors-of-deptford.html) The firm is recorded as owning spritsail barges - one called Jacob dated from 1856 and one called Jesse from 1865 – but I don’t know if they built them themselves. Clearly some vessels were built for them – for instance ‘Jacob’ a tug built in Greenwich in 1912 and which they still owned in 1958 despite it being hit by a flying bomb in Rotherthithe in 1944. ‘Jacob’ was eventually scrapped after it had been sold to mud shoot owners Flower and Everett in 1974.

‘Olaf’, another tug built for them is still around and now in apparently in Barking Creek. She was built as recently as 1956 in Appledore for Jacobs and was sold to Humphreys and Grey and later to General Marine.

The dangers of the Creek and the work can be illustrated by the death of one of the family. Joseph Jacobs, a lighterman aged 57, was a cousin of Jesse and Benjamin and worked for them. Late one night he and a mate, James Watson, had to bring a barge

up to Robinson’s mill and then bring an empty one away. Jesse Jacob said ‘it was a nasty night - blew very hard with small rain’. At 1am James Watson came into the office and asked where Joseph was – and then said that the barge was adrift and the staff overboard. They went to see if Joseph had gone home and, finding he was not there they began to search until they found a body near Hills works between two barges. The police described how at three in the morning they searched from Hoy Stairs. The verdict was that Joseph had fallen from his barge and drowned in the Creek.

Perhaps we should end this with something more cheerful. This was a dinner at the Lawes’ works – a firm we should get to in the next few weeks. There had been a cricket match between the two Lawes' factories at Deptford and at Barking and was held at Barking. The Lawes' Deptford workers were brought to Barking by Jacobs in the ‘beautiful new steam tug ‘Day Star’. Naturally Jesse Jacobs and his staff were invited to take part in the following dinner, with many toasts and a sing song ending with the National Anthem.

I’m sorry that I can find no reference to Day Star in any tug reference material – but perhaps that just points to the fact that there were many, many boats that these riverside firms built and operated which are not known outside of the barest records and which we know nothing about. On the busy, busy river they were just one in hundreds, all forgotten.

arts On Christmas Eve in 1805, Vice Admiral Lord Nelson’s body arrived in Greenwich, having been transported back to Britain on HMS Victory after his triumph at the Battle of Trafalgar. His brought him from the River Thames, where they had docked, to the Royal Hospital for Seamen, now known as the Old Royal Naval College. Nelson was highly regarded as a national hero during the Napoleonic Wars, and was therefore given the honour of a lying in state in the Upper Hall of the Painted Hall, before which his body lay in a small room off the Painted Hall. This chamber was named the Nelson Room, writes Michael Holland.

Greenwich became the focus of the nation’s grief; thousands of people headed to Greenwich to pay their respects. With so many arriving, the local militia had to be brought in to control the crowds.

Now, after an extensive conservation project and reinterpretation, the Old Royal Naval College is relaunching the Nelson Room with an audio-

Roome, the seaman who hoisted the signal, ‘England expects that every man will do his duty’. Sadly, after he left the service, John was found destitute selling watercress and herrings on the streets of Blackfriars and was taken into the Royal Hospital for Seamen where he died. Not a tale of those times so much, but confirmation that not looking after our veterans has a long history - At least not those of officer class. Perhaps, John Roome should have raised the signal, ‘Every man expects that England will do its duty’.

Entering the room is a sudden change from the echoey atmosphere of the Painted Hall, where guides can be heard on the other side of the hall sharing their knowledge with keen listeners, all staring up in awe at James Thornhill’s brilliant artwork.

Inside the Nelson Room there is a respectful solemnity. Without thinking you tread softly so as not to wake the dead. A circular seat allows you to sit and watch and listen to Nelson’s story.

The original statue from which the one atop Nelson’s Column was created looks down at visitors. You cannot help but feel that this is a special place with a special meaning to many.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Ideal Modular Homes on behalf of RBG who need to carry out a crane operation.

The Order will come into operation on 12th May 2022 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However, the works are expected to take 1 month. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

main stage line-up announced

The Royal Borough of Greenwich is celebrating the June Jubilee weekend in style From midday to 6pm on Thursday 2 June, Royal Greenwich Together 22 will be taking over Charlton Park with free music, dance and activities.

The first three acts on the event’s impressive main stage line-up are:

Desta French Tyber & Pete from The Dualers Eternal Taal As well as two stages there will be themed areas including the new Kids Town to keep the kids entertained with workshops and activities. While across the field, we’ll be celebrating 50 years since the first UK Pride celebrations with a dedicated Pride50 tent full of performances and activities too.

Visitors can also explore the marketplace, full of food, bars, craft and produce stalls. Get stuck into sporting activities with Greenwich Get Active, including football, cricket and tennis.

The Community Village will welcome voluntary and community stalls, plus local choirs and wellness activities.

The celebrations will kick off a huge summer of events for 2022 and begin the borough’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The Platinum Picnic in the Park will follow on Friday 3 June, from midday to 4pm.
