He was a favourite among the dancers on BBC ballroom show Strictly Come Dancing, now Giovanni Pernice is showing audiences just what he can do without a celebrity trainee on his arm. The Italian stallion’s show, This Is Me, is a Ballroom and Latin homage to the dancers who have inspired him throughout his career. It’s currently touring the UK and is coming to the Churchill Theatre this week.

Soulful sounds are wafting through the airwaves at Greenwich Market this Saturday, thanks to a live performance from the London Soul Choirs of Greenwich and Hither Green. Expect uplifting songs, possibly with an Easter edge. Whether you come to listen to the choirs specifically or browse the market’s eclectic mix of stalls while you listen, the music is sure to raise spirits. Both choirs are part of UK Soul Choirs, a professionally-run, inclusive community choir operating across south-east London and Kent.

Fun at the fair A carousel of fun awaits at the Hornimann Spring Fair this Easter weekend. In a garden decorated with bunting designed by local schools, look forward to a programme of live music, crafting, competitions, rides and even cooking demonstrations.

Performances will be compèred by comedian Jamie Allerton, and include live music from New Orleans-inspired jazz band The Alvar Tree Frogs and South London Samba. Little ones can get their face painted and those good with their fingers can take part in the Spring Bonnet Parade and competition. If it all gets too much, peel off and take a tour of the Horniman gardens.

Getting intimate with Charli XCX English singer-songwriter Charli XCX rose to fame after being discovered on Myspace (one of the OG social media sites) back in 2008. She released her first solo album, True Romance, in 2013 and has gone on to release plenty more, as well as collaborating with the likes of Lady Gaga, BTS and Shawn Mendes.

Learn the Moko Jumbie!

Emergency Exit Arts (EEA) is on a mission to teach Greenwich creatives the Moko Jumbie. ‘The what?’ It’s an ancient artform from West Africa and the Caribbean that takes place on stilts. You’ll see it often at Carnival and it’s believed to be a playful spirit watching over communities.

EEA is working with Carnival arts specialists Sunshine International Arts to deliver the workshop.

Open to those aged 12 and up, the workshop is a chance to have a go at jumping on a pair of stilts yourself.

Chilling, thrilling and fulfilling: The Rocky Horror Show comes to Bromley With its motley crew of misfits, playful mockery of the sci-fi genre, carousel of memorable songs (‘Time Warp’, ‘Sweet Transvestite’ – you know the line up) and celebration of individuality, it’s perhaps no wonder The Rocky Horror Show continues to enjoy cult status 50 years after its first performance at the Royal Court Theatre in 1973 (yep, two years before the movie). With a UK tour time-warping its way onto the Churchill Theatre stage this week, Holly O’Mahony speaks to Stephen Webb, the production’s ‘sweet transvestite’ Frank-N-Furter, about starring in the best-known rock ‘n’ roll musical of all time…

When wet-behind-the-ears college sweethearts Brad and Janet break down near a castle on a cold and rainy night, nothing could prepare them for the party waiting inside. Here, the Annual Transylvanian Convention is taking place, led by a crossdressing, bisexual scientist, Sweet Transvestite. The mad scientist soon convinces the couple to leave their squeaky clean personas behind them and embrace a bit of fun… but at whose expense?

The production features Richard O’Brien’s original script, which Webb points out was before its time. “What Richard O’Brien did, especially with gender fluidity, it’s become quite current.” He’s right: fifty years on and trans rights are still a hot topic denied and belittled by many, yet back in the 70s, The Rocky Horror Show placed a loud, proud trans character centre stage.

The role of Frank-N-Furter was immortalised in the movie by Tim Curry, whose costumes, lines and eccentricities have been deified ever since. Rather than try to replicate his act, Stephen, editorial@weekender.co.uk

whose stage credits also include playing Charles Clarke in Titanic and Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys, both on national tours, has put his own mark on the role.

“What Tim Curry did [for the film] was amazing, I could never replicate it. People would just compare me to him. I’ve stuck to my own roots and tried to make him… more mature? I’m also more of a butcher frame,” laughs the actor, who first took on the role in 2018, sharing the part with boy band Blue’s Duncan James. “It completely took me out of my comfort zone,” he recalls.

“I’d never done a part like it before. When I first got offered the part, I worried I wouldn’t be able to do it justice, but I just fell in love with it. I’m still learning every day with it.”

The original tour concluded in 2019. Then midway through lockdown, Stephen got the call asking whether he’d take it on again. “I was like, hands down absolutely!,” he grins.

“When I first put them on I cut all my toes,” he recalls. “But now I strut around in them and don’t even think about them,” he says. This new-found ease could be because Stephen’s three pairs of heels – including a four-inch and five-inch pair – were made specifically for his feet, and cost an eye-watering £700.

“They spend an awful lot of money on the costumes,” he chuckles, reasoning: “People come dressed up as us so we need to look good.”

Part way through the interview I realise that, led by Stephen’s example, I’ve been referring to Frank-N-Furter as ‘he’. What would the OG trans character think to the pronouns ‘they/them’?

“I think it would be ‘they/them’, absolutely,” Stephen says, correcting us both. “You can look at Frank as anything really.”

As those who have attended a Rocky Horror performance or screening will know – and Rocky Horror ‘virgins’ take note – unlike in virtually any other live show, the audience participation is as much a part of the night as what’s happening on stage

or screen. “Every night is a different crowd so you get a slightly different performance,” says Stephen.

Back in the day, a typical Rocky Horror Show performance would see water pistols fired on stage accompanied by handfuls of rice.

Health and safety regulations have put a stop to that, but flash lights are still shone in the dark, newspapers used to cover heads when it’s raining and debit cards chucked in the air when Frank-NFurter sings ‘I’m Going Home’.

“The audience has their own script in a way. They shout out to us. As an actor it’s very rewarding…we love hearing the crowd shouting out, that’s why it’s so iconic; people feel part of the show.”

Do audiences ever get carried away mimicking the action on stage?

“I think I’ve seen everything now, doing Rocky Horror. I can’t tell you too much, but sometimes nothing is left to the imagination,” he chuckles. “It’s brilliant, because people take their inhibitions out of it, they come, they get dressed up and some of them look absolutely fantastic, they actually look better than me at times.”

The Rocky Horror Show has built a loyal following over the last 50 years, and Stephen has noticed the age of the crowd is expanding. “We’re

getting a younger crowd coming in now, [plus] we’ve got people who have come to see it regularly over the past 30, 40 years,” he says.

and suspenders, “people go mad for it and I feel like Mick Jagger,” beams the actor, adding that he finds wearing heels “quite empowering” but that he takes his hat off to anyone who wears them regularly.

When not on tour, Stephen lives in north London with his fiancée. For the Bromley run of the show, he plans to commute to the theatre in style.

“I’m a big motorcycle fan, so when we’re in Bromley, I’m going to be commuting it on my Harley-Davison,” he grins. “I’ve got a big old leather jacket that says Frank on the back.

I’d love to just drive down the road in my fishnets and corset, maybe have Riff Raff on the back with me – it could be a promotional shoot!”

Stephen doesn’t have a favourite moment in the show, but he’s moved by what the production stands for as a whole. “When I sing ‘I’m Going Home’, which is the last song Frank sings, I think of everyone who feels like they don’t fit into society,” he says. “Everyone can feel insecure and anxious at times. Rocky Horror has always been a show for outcasts. For those two hours, people can dress up, be whoever they want to be and feel accepted. That’s what I love about it.”

At Greenwich Theatre, PaddleBoat Theatre Company is telling the story of a young girl, Sophia, whose two imaginary friends are battling for her attention. The mischievous Mr Whatsit has always been there for her, but when Sophia moves into a new foster home, the glamorous, grown-up Margo becomes her invisible sidekick. Stick around after the show for a workshop in constructing family portraits (April 15) or bringing props to life (April 16).

There’s a host of family activities taking place at the Old Royal Naval College this Easter. On The Great Easter Trail, families will track down clues and gather information to reveal the secret location of some chocolate. Over in the Skittle Alley, little ones are invited to knock down bunny skittles, again, for a chocolatey prize.

There’s also an Easter animal-making class (April 17 only), where crafty kids can create bunny ears and pom-pom chicks.

‘Baa’ good fun at Woodlands Farm this Easter Spring is the most exciting time of year on a farm, what with baby lambs being born and flowers coming into bloom. After two quiet springs, closed to the public because of the pandemic, Woodlands Farm in Welling is throwing open the gates, running a bumper programme of activities to entice visitors of all ages. Observe minibeasts up close, have a go at willow weaving, hunt for Easter eggs and say hello (or baa!) to the new lambs.

Holly O’Mahony speaks to Hannah Ricketts, Education Officer at Woodlands Farm, to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Spring always sounds like a magical time on the farm, what with so much life arriving.

Does it feel that way working there?

Hannah Rickets: Spring is definitely a magical time being on the farm.

When you are working outside during the cold winter it is so lovely to see the first signs of spring, with the lovely blossom on the trees and know that the weather will be improving. Our hedgerows are alive with colour and when you can hear the wild birdsong, it is a wonderful time to work outdoors. Obviously there is also the excitement of new life with the arrival of our lambs too.

HOM: Is this the first spring you’ll be open to the public since the pandemic? How does that feel?

HR: It is! We are so pleased to be open again. Woodlands Farm is all about welcoming visitors to the farm to find out about farming and conservation, and it didn’t feel the same when we only had staff on site.

Spring is our busiest time of year for visitors and everyone loves to come and see the lambs, so we are excited to welcome everyone back. editorial@weekender.co.uk

HOM: Is it possible the sheep might find it strange having an audience after two quiet lambing seasons?

I have a feeling some parents and carers might get squeamish…

HR: The sheep will be fine with the visitors here as they have been used to the visitors coming before lambing started. Often they lamb early in the morning or late at night when visitors aren’t here anyway.

We also ensure that all mothers and newborn lambs are in a quiet area out of public view for the first few days after the lambs are born so that the lambs can start feeding successfully and we can check that they are all doing well before they are put in areas the public can view.

HR: We will be making a small wormery in a large plastic bottle, using a mixture of soil and sand as well as material for the worms to eat. This is a specific viewing wormery, where the worms can be viewed for a few days in action and then they would need to be released again as it is too small for them to live long term. We will suggest to visitors about how to make a permanent wormery at home.

HOM: Very sensible! You’re running lots of family events this Easter. Is there a highlight you’re especially looking forward to?

HR: We are looking forward to our Egg-cellent Easter Trail. This is usually always a very busy event and it is always great to see so many families at the farm enjoying a day out. It’s a bonus when you get a prize!

HOM: One of your events, Marvellous Minibeasts, invites visitors to make www.weekender.co.uk

HOM: Another event, Willow Weaving, invites visitors to make their own willow hurdle. What is a willow hurdle typically used for?

HR: A willow hurdle is a traditional fence that would have originally been used to pen in animals. It is made from using willow and weaving it in between sticks to make a small fence. The ones we shall be making are smaller ones you can carry home, so not big enough for keeping animals in!

HOM: Can anyone take part in the session?

HR: Yes! Willow weaving is likely to appeal to children and adults who enjoy crafts and traditional skills.

HOM: For those who prefer to consume than create (like myself), there’s the Egg-cellent Easter Trail. Any tips for finding wellhidden eggs? And, are there any chocolate-loving animals on site that might ‘accidentally’ end up playing along too?

HR: Due to the animals we can’t have chocolate eggs scattered around the farm, as probably the visitors would never get any! Instead, we have created a picture trail of a combination of easter eggs and different bird eggs that everyone will have to search for. These will be scattered around the farmyard and down to the pond area too. On the trail you will get a sheet to tick off each one you found and then you can come and collect your chocolate egg prize. So there is some chocolate!

HOM: Phew! You’re then hosting a lambing day on April 24, when

visitors can come and see the newborn lambs. The event is being tied in with a Food Festival – what sort of stalls will you be hosting?

HR: On Lambing Day, the stalls will include food stalls for things to take home such as sausages, jams and chutneys, cheeses and cake. There will also be stalls selling food to eat while you are here such as pizza, hot dogs and samosas. There will be craft stalls selling gift items and obviously the chance to walk round and see all the animals, including our lambs, too. If the weather is kind to us there will also be an opportunity to go on a Tractor and Trailer ride, and our Pony Bob will be doing cart rides too. It should be a fun day out for all the family.

Court cases, drunkenness and manure...

Mary Mills Once again - we continue down the Lewisham bank of Deptford Creek where we have now reached the railway line and the railway bridge. I wrote quite a bit about the railway and its bridge over the Creek when I was writing last July about the other side of the Creek, that is when I was following the Greenwich bank going south.

I need to remind you that this is the oldest railway in London and the first suburban railway in the world.

Landmann, and it is the first and the biggest in all sorts of ways.

The crossing over Deptford Creek wasn’t finished until well after the line from Deptford to London Bridge was opened. Delay had been caused by legal restrictions on the crossing itself and the need to consult and then to work with the owners of various wharves who would be affected by a bridge across the Creek. The original bridge required a whole group of men to open and shut it and it took a long time to do that – and the principle of ‘Sail before Steam’ meant they had to open it whenever a boat wanted to come through. Today the crossing has a lifting railway bridge built in the 1960s, although it is apparently welded shut but it is now a notable landmark in the area. There is also a foot crossing built in the 1990s and

which is apparently made to look like a crossing – the Ha’penny Hatch which was here around the time the railway was built - and which probably pre-dated it. It was installed as a result of community requests and regenerators’ efforts. There has been talk of getting the crossing and the bridge listed but this has not happened except for the piers of the old railway bridge on the Lewisham bank – and they are now listed structures. They are however very difficult to see.

In the Middle Ages and later, the area which lay inland on the Lewisham side of the Creek had few buildings and was known as ‘the gravel pits’ and we can assume that gravel extraction took place over many years. It is probable that the Creekside wharves here date from the early 19th Century - although it may

be that we just don’t have records of anything which was there earlier.

I ought to say that one complication with researching many of these wharves is that there are other wharves on the Creek, the Thames and indeed the Grand Surrey Canal with the same names. Too often it ends up being guess work about which wharf a report refers to – so I hope I’ve got it all right. There are also changes in the name of the road on the inland side of the wharves here, which doesn’t help - most of this is now ‘Copperas Street’ but for a while it was called ‘Knott Street’ and also ‘Creek Street’. Another complication is that there are ‘Deptford’ areas on riversides in Sunderland and elsewhere with road and wharf names which are often very similar. editorial@weekender.co.uk

Immediately north of the railway on the Lewisham side was ‘Baltic Wharf’ which was very narrow, and quite small. It seems very likely that it was part of the land owned by the railway which they had acquired to build the line and when no longer needed it was put into other use.

By the 1890s Baltic Wharf was used by the Johnson family who seemed to have had it some sort of timber business here. It appears from the Goad insurance map that the arches under the railway line were for ‘wood chopping’ and there is a suspicion that what the Johnsons were actually selling was firewood and in fact they advertised that - but ‘timber’ sounds much grander.

History resolve some issues of debts was ongoing in 1890. There is also a police court report that Frederick Thomas Johnson, described as a ‘wood chopper’ was charged with assaulting his brother, William Edward Johnson.

William had gone into the office to see if he could see the company accounts but instead was knocked down by his brother who also kicked him. He went himself to the police because he said that he was frightened of his brother. I am sorry that I was unable to find the report of the subsequent police court hearing. Things must have settled down because they remained in business. Four years later Frederick Johnson, described as a firewood dealer, was prosecuted for allowing a horse which he owned to be taken out in an unfit state and both he and his carman were fined for allowing this to happen. Elsewhere there are details of his divorce.

In the 1920s there are reports of a number of vessels at Baltic Wharf.

There are no real details since they are in lists of ‘vessels in the port today’ and giving minimum information. I am far from sure this is the correct Baltic Wharf although it says it is in Deptford. I can find none of these vessels in the exhaustive enthusiasts pages of reference material on sailing barges but some have turned up elsewhere but described as ‘ketches’. They were however sea going vessels which had sailed over the Channel because their ports of origin are all in Europe - one from Antwerp and others from Rumpst and Lobith – which are both small towns on the Rhine. I have no idea what they were bringing - or taking from – Baltic Wharf. It would be interesting to know. Rumpst apparently had a brick making industry so maybe they brought bricks.

On this stretch of river side there were streets running between the wharves from Copperas Street to the Creek. So before you could get to the next wharf you would have to cross a street. In this case it was Thomas Street and it ran between Baltic Wharf and Normandy Wharf. Thomas Street had apparently been built by the London to Greenwich Railway parallel with the railway line. They had commissioned the houses to be built by a Mr. Pope and then rented out. They had then passed through a number of owners and their agents.

In 1870 a business on adjacent Normandy Wharf – Mockford - went to court to obtain possession – or even some rent - from these houses which it was said had been taken over by ‘a colony of Irish who refused to pay any rent’. In this period many Irish people were coming to England to look for work and also being blamed for everything possible. Much of the court case was about requests for rent or eviction notices and if they had ever actually been served. The witness for the owners was a man, only referred to as ‘Hippy’, who was supposed to be a rent collector but said he wouldn’t go near the place because they were ‘a rascally lot’. Evidence was given by one of the residents, a Patrick Brown, who when asked who his landlord was, said ‘No Man’ and went on to say that he had never made any agreement with anybody to pay rent but had paid a pound to a Mr. White to get possession of the house. He said that his wife had had notices to quit but editorial@weekender.co.uk

didn’t know where she had put them – and that she couldn’t read anyway.

He couldn’t read either and there had been so many papers that he took no notice of them. The Judge said that it would need to be established what interest Mr. White had in the property to be able pass it on to Patrick Brown but White was now dead. It is quite clear from the report that Patrick Brown – despite being illiterate – had the smartest answers and the most telling points. The Judge stressed that Mockfords needed to prove that Brown was living in the property illegally before they could evict him. Brown had never paid rent to anyone but had paid to get possession of the house and the Judge added that he ‘could well assert that the property is his own’. This judgement applied to several other residents in the street. Win to the Irish!

Other newspaper reports about events in Thomas Street give us some idea of the lives of the inhabitants.

In 1850 an elderly lady resident, Ellen Walsh, was apprehended in the Centurion Pub at Deptford Bridge while removing a pint pot – presumably a drinking vessel made of some sort of metal. It turned out she had been removing these for some time, taken them home and melted them in a frying pan - and then presumably sold the metal.

lady died after her voluminous skirts caught fire while she was making toast for tea. This, unfortunately, was not an uncommon occurrence and was one of the cases which led the Kentish Mercury to start a local campaign against the wearing of crinolines. They were of course quite right – and while we might admire all these skirts in costume dramas, they did present a considerable danger in a small crowded room with an open fire and candles.

In 1870 a John Enright who lived in Thomas Street was charged with assaulting a friend with a poker and foul language. He appeared in court with a large bandage around his head and admitted that they had been drinking together that evening.

The next industrial site was Normandy Wharf. There was also a ‘Normandy Wharf’ up on the Surrey Canal and so I hope I have got the right one. On earlier maps, before the Creekside land was divided up into separate wharves, some buildings are shown on the area which appears to be Normandy Wharf, so clearly some earlier activity took place here. In the 1860s it would appear that Normandy Wharf was used as some sort of site office accommodation and depot for the builders of Bazalgette’s pumping station on the opposite side of the Creek. However there may

also have been other businesses on the site as shown by a bankruptcy petition for a Benjamin Thompson, who had been a ship broker there.

As we will see this area came to be used by a number of ‘artificial manure’ works and the smells they created became a big problem. As early as 1857 Mr. Hubble, the Deptford Inspector of Nuisances, had said that smells from under the railway arches here came from a store used by a patent manure works. After 1870 Normandy Wharf was in the hands of Mockford & Co. who had come from the City of London where they had been in the ‘artificial manure’ trade since at least the 1860s. Most of their advertisements also give an address in Cork and it is difficult to know if they were a firm with Irish origins or it was just a major market for them.

Other advertisements however are aimed at Caribbean sugar and coconut growers. They had also opened the Mockford Ordnance Manure Works on the Greenwich Peninsula riverside in the area where the Dome stands now and I covered this in a Weekender article way back in March 2019 and also in my book on the Greenwich Riverside. Stored on site at Greenwich was about 250 tons of ‘shoddy’ waste from cloth manufacture. There was also over 5,000 tons of guano - that’s bird droppings collected from sea bird nesting areas. In 1872 the

works there had been inspected by Mr. Pink, the Greenwich Inspector of Nuisances, and as a result the firm had been stopped from manufacturing ‘Caro Guano’ because the manufacturing equipment was ‘imperfectly constructed’. Edward Ballard, who reported to the Board of Works in 1870 on smells along the east London riverside, said of them ‘acrid fumes were escaping. a very powerful pungent odour pervaded the works … an empyreumatic odour .... no means whatever are in use to intercept these effluvia’.

Mr.Mockford was himself very respectable and a member of the Royal Society of Arts but there were constant complaints about this Deptford site. In 1871 there were complaints of ‘town dust’ which had been collected and left in heaps on Normandy Wharf. By the 1890s the Wharf was being used by a Mr. Donagen whose use of the wharf is unclear but who advertised that he wanted ‘second hand pantiles’ in 1899. Sadly also in this period a young boy of 13 was sentenced to a number of lashes as a result of pulling out the lynch pin of a cart causing it to collapse.

None of this seems to be very good!

And no space here to mention current use of these sites by Cockpit Arts or the terrific mural in Copperas Street.

“It can happen to anyone” - Charlton Athletic’s Chuks Aneke, Hollie Olding and Samuel Oguntayo take part in crime reduction workshops as part of EFL Week of Action

Samuel Oguntayo joined a group of Young Greenwich members at Avery Hill Youth Club on Tuesday evening where they taught him everything they had learnt about county lines from their workshop a few weeks prior.

As part of the EFL’s first ever Week of Action which sees the 72 clubs showcase community programmes with EFL players, Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) invited Charlton Athletic men’s player Chuks Aneke, women’s player Hollie Olding and U23s player Samuel Oguntayo to take part in interactive workshops.

The interactive County Lines & Exploitation workshop by CACT’s crime reduction team covers the risks associated with drugs and gangs, ultimately aiming to avoid young people getting involved in county lines operations. Launched in January, the workshop has so far been delivered in schools across Greenwich and Bexley by CACT’s Crime Reduction team to more than 2,400 young people to encourage positive life choices.

Chuks Aneke and Hollie Olding attended a workshop alongside 20 Charlton Athletic Academy U11 players on Tuesday 5 April, sharing their own advice for the young people, as well as listening and learning from the group.

Charlton Athletic forward Chuks said: “It’s definitely important that players get involved in these initiatives because these boys look up to me so it’s good for me to be around them and be a good influence, a good role model for them.”

Charlton Athletic Women’s Defender Hollie added: “From the workshop I learnt what the effect can be like on families and the wider impact it can have.

It was just really eye-opening and I’m glad I was here today.”

On Tuesday evening, Samuel Oguntayo joined a County Lines workshop with a twist at Young Greenwich’s Avery Hill Youth Club.

The young people who worked with Samuel had taken part in the full interactive version of the workshop a few weeks prior and were challenged to teach Samuel all about county lines from what they had learnt.

What you need to know about your Easter collections dates April 2022 During the Easter bank holiday your waste and recycling bins will be collected a day later than usual. Collections will resume as normal from 25 April.

Blue and black bins will be prioritised, so you may find that your green bin is emptied later than expected. Please make sure your bins and sacks are placed out by 6am on the day of collection.

How to get benefits and debt advice

Residents who need welfare benefits and debt advice can get free face-to-face support at weekly drop in-sessions from April.

Further locations include: • St Mary’s Community Centre (Admiral Seymour Road, London SE9 1SN), starting Wednesday 20 April

This is in addition to the Migrant Hub, in Woolwich Common, which currently runs on Tuesdays between 10.30am and 1.30pm.

And at the Clockhouse Hub in Woolwich Dockyard which takes place on Fridays between 9.30am and midday, providing benefits, housing and debt support.

Over the coming months, Royal Greenwich will start welcoming families and refugees from Ukraine, we are proud that so many people across the borough have offered to help or put themselves forward as hosts.

To support these efforts, the Council is looking for Ukrainian speakers who can help support newly arrived refugees. You may be asked to help with translation, or to support Ukranian families registering for doctors or schools among other things.
