Buildings under investigation Closing this week, Hidden in Plain Site is a multi-media exhibition examining the relationship between architectural sites and human traumas buried within them. Kipps: A feel-good musical with heart at Bob Hope Theatre Musical theatre fans may well be familiar with 1963 musical comedy Half a Sixpence.

Folkestone-set, it follows the story of an orphaned draper’s assistant who inherits a fortune, tries to climb the social ladder, briefly forgets his childhood sweetheart in the process, then realises money can’t buy happiness, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The musical is based on H. G. Wells’ 1905 novel Kipps: The Story of a Simple Soul and was written primarily as a vehicle for 60s rock and roll star Tommy Steele to segway onto the silver screen. The musical was given a modern update in 2016, with a new book, Kipps, written by king of period dramas Julian Fellowes, and original songs by George Stiles, David Heneker and Anthony Drewe – all of whom collaborated on the Mary Poppins stage musical.

The retelling retains the majority of the original plot and many of its classic songs, but the order of songs has been changed and new hits including the earworm ‘Pick Out a Simple Tune’ have been added to the score.

“We have a large company and members can take part in the shows they want to enjoy,” explains Katrina. “It’s very much a family vibe with generations of families taking part either on stage or behind the scenes. In fact, the lady playing [young Arther’s love interest] Ann in Kipps is returning after a five-year break after having her two beautiful daughters Aurora and Amelie, and she is sharing the role with our original Ann, who had her own child, Maeve, only in December,” she beams, explaining that while an am-dram group, all principal roles in the show have been auditioned.

It’s Kipps, the adaptation of the original Half a Sixpence musical, that south-east Londonbased amateur dramatics group Eldorado Musical Productions have chosen for their biannual production, which they’re performing at the Bob Hope Theatre in Eltham this week.

half years in the making. “We originally started rehearsals for Kipps in October 2019,” Katrina recalls. In March 2020, two weeks before the show was due to open, the group was forced to disperse and suspend all work on the production as the UK was plunged into its first lockdown.

“It was so disappointing, but fast forward two years and we are ready to try again.”

A lot can change in the space of two years and not all original cast members have returned. “A couple of our principals and a few of our chorus members were unable to commit to the 2022 production, but we’ve got a strong cast and some excellent dances which will leave you tapping your toes and snapping your fingers,” Katrina promises. “It’s a real feel-good show, ending with the classic [song] ‘Flash Bang Wallop’.

Rehearsing through the pandemic has not been easy for the company, who have had to juggle the show with work and other commitments. “We have encouraged mask wearing to help stop any spread, but there is never a rehearsal where we have a full cast as someone is isolating or feeling editorial@weekender.co.uk

under the weather,” Katrina admits.

None the less, they’ve managed it, pulling off a production with bucket loads of escapism from the world’s troubles. “The hired scenery and the costumes will wow the audience and the performances from our talented cast will make them smile,” says Katrina. But this production is as much for Eldorado’s eager cast as it is the audience. “After two years of not performing, we can’t wait to get back to entertaining you.”

This is not the last we’ll see of Eldorado this year, either. In October 2022, their production of The Railway Children will be choo-chooing onto the Bob Hope Theatre stage.

“Auditions will be in June and we always welcome new members,” adds Katrina, for anybody keen to join them.

Canals up close: National Maritime Museum unveils major Canaletto retrospective

From April 1, visitors to the National Maritime Museum will be able to study up close the life-like paintings of 18th century Venetian artist Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto. The blockbuster exhibition Canaletto’s Venice Revisited displays a complete set of 24 Venetian views, painted in the 1730s, which have been loaned to the museum by Woburn Abbey. As well as a chance to study the intricacies of everyday life on the canals as immortalised within Canaletto’s frames, the exhibition hopes to raise awareness of the connection between these world-famous, appealing vistas, Venice becoming a tourist hotspot and the climate crisis – something which has contributed to the worrying rise in water levels across the city.

Holly O’Mahony speaks to Katherine Gazzard, Curator of Art at Royal Museums Greenwich, and Laura Boon, Lloyd’s Register Foundation Senior Curator for Contemporary Maritime at Royal Museums Greenwich, to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: What first attracted you to the work of Canaletto, and why is an exhibition of his paintings so timely right now?

Katherine Gazzard: I had always thought of Canaletto as a great painter of architecture, but his work really came to life for me when I started paying attention to the human details: plant pots on windowsills, workers mending broken roof tiles, shoppers bartering at market stalls… These details show Venice as a living city, which makes Canaletto’s paintings especially powerful and poignant at a time when Venice’s survival is under threat from rising sea levels, mass tourism and population decline.

HOM: Canaletto’s paintings were (and are) very popular in England, too. To those wealthy enough to travel, they worked as an advert for the city. But they were also able to captivate the imaginations of those unable to visit in person. What was it about his paintings that set them apart from other depictions?

KG: I think the allure of Canaletto’s paintings rested on a kind of paradox.

On the one hand, they appealed because they were highly idealised. Canaletto’s Venice is beautiful, ordered and perpetually sunny. He even altered the positions of certain buildings to create more pleasing compositions. Yet, at the same time, he had a reputation for accuracy. Viewers of his work, especially in Britain, thought his paintings were scrupulously exact, which made seeing them seem like the next best thing to actually visiting Venice.

HOM: The exhibition also focuses on the negative impact of Canaletto’s artworks, namely the travel brochure effect. You suggest his images contributed to the city becoming overrun with tourists which, centuries later, is a contributing factor to the climate crisis and rising water levels there. Why was this such an important aspect of the exhibition to include?

KG: During lockdown, the empty canals and squares of Venice made headlines around the world. These news stories often implied that the sudden absence of tourists would act as a ‘reset button’ for the city, but this is not necessarily the case. As we emerge from the pandemic, the city still faces profound social, economic and environmental challenges. The exhibition uses Canaletto’s paintings to reflect on these challenges.

This is not just about Venice. The city’s struggles reflect large global issues that have major implications for people and communities around the world. Venice’s high-profile difficulties highlight the need for humanity as a whole to take urgent action in a time of climate emergency.

HOM: The paintings going on show are on loan from Woburn Abbey, which has lent other artworks to the National Maritime Museum before.

Can you tell us a bit more about this relationship between the two sites?

KG: The exhibition explores an important series of paintings, which has been in the Woburn Abbey collection for over 300 years. There are many fascinating synergies between the collections at Continues on page 9

Woburn Abbey and those here at the National Maritime Museum. We have celebrated these synergies through various collaborations in recent years.

Until 25 August 2022, you can see Woburn Treasures in the Queen’s House, a free exhibition which puts masterpieces from the Woburn Abbey collection alongside work from our permanent galleries.

LB: Of the contemporary objects on display, my favourite is the ‘pocket boots’. These are disposable wellies tourists and Venetians wear when the city floods. It is testament to how the city continues to function despite the flooding, arguably for some tourists being pictured in the flood water has become part of the tourist experience.

HOM: It sounds like the Canaletto exhibition, with its references to the climate crisis, will complement the Maritime Museum’s ongoing Exposure: Lives at Sea exhibition.

Was this intentional?

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope visitors take away from seeing the Canaletto exhibition?

Laura Boon: The Climate emergency is one of the most important issues we currently face. The museum has made a commitment to raise awareness of climate change, through our collections, exhibitions and programming. The ocean plays a vital role in regulating our climate; much of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean. However, human activity is having a huge impact on our seas.

KG: I hope visitors fall in love with the everyday details in Canaletto’s paintings.

It can get very addictive looking for tiny figures on the rooftops and dogs running around the squares; there is just so much to spot! Venice is a beacon of creativity and a symbol of the symbiosis between man and nature. I hope visitors leave the exhibition with a greater understanding of the city’s dynamic history and its precarious present.

Both the exhibitions form part of this in different ways; Exposure: Lives at Sea looks at our relationship with the ocean at an intimate level through the eyes of those working at sea, whereas Canaletto’s Venice Revisited uses historical artwork as a springboard for conservation around contemporary issues.

LB: I would like to think visitors take away a message of hope. Venice, like many cities, is facing a number of challenges yet its story is one of resilience and ingenuity. In our time of climate emergency, it is vital we remain positive and focus on solutions.

HOM: The exhibition also features contemporary images of Venice. What does this present-day view of the city add to the storytelling of the display?

KG: While creating this exhibition, we

spoke to activists and researchers fighting to protect Venice today. You can hear some of their voices in the exhibition, alongside contemporary photography showing the impact of tourism and flooding. One of the star objects in the exhibition is a protest flag from No Grandi Navi, one of the largest protest groups currently active in Venice.

They oppose the environmental and

human health implications of massive cruise ships in addition to the damaging effects of mass tourism. Hanging from windows and balconies around the city, the No Grandi Navi flag is a symbol of resistance for ordinary Venetians.

HOM: Which of the artworks going on show as part of the Canaletto exhibition are you particularly

excited to be exhibiting and why?

KG: The exhibition includes two large paintings, which feature colourful depictions of Venetian festivals, and 22 smaller paintings, which show scenes of everyday life in different locations around the city. The large paintings are truly spectacular, but I am most excited about some of the smaller works because

Gaslighting Class visit to Creekside Centre

Mary Mills As we continue down the Lewisham bank of the Creek towards the Thames we eventually get to where the railway crosses over along with the Ha’penny Hatch Bridge. Before we get there, alongside the railway, is the Creekside Centre. People might remember that before the Centre was opened it was a site which has been empty and derelict for years and years and years. Now, there was a reason for that.......

In the 1830s excitement and innovation was in the air locally. A steam railway – the first suburban railway in the world was to come to Greenwich. Not only was this railway to be the first in London but it also would incorporate a number of novel features – there was a ‘boulevard’ along the whole route and an ‘inclined plane’ at Deptford and also plans for an integrated scheme of gas lighting.

The engineer to the London and Greenwich Railway Company was George Landmann, who was a most interesting man. He had had a distinguished career in the Royal Engineers but had since worked as Engineer to the Imperial Continental Gas Association – travelling round Europe to construct gas works in Continental towns. In turning his

hand to railway construction it is only natural that he should also think about how gas could be used as part of his railway scheme. I want to write a bit more about the railway next week and perhaps something about Landmann.

The Greenwich Railway Gas Company – was set up in 1836. It was proposed to light the line with gas lamps –"lights at a distance of 21 yards on each side of the railway and also a number of lights for the stopping places each end of the road making in all about 700 lights" and to supply gas lighting to stations and to cottages which were to be built in the arches under the railways. In a revolutionary step it was also proposed to supply the cottages with gas cooking apparatus. It seems very likely that another part of the plan was to make coke on site for use by the locomotives.

The gas works itself was to occupy the site upriver of the railway on the Deptford side of Deptford Creek – the site now occupied by the Creekside Centre.

As plans for the railway began to emerge the Phoenix Gas Company became worried – their works was just down the Creek on the Greenwich bank – I wrote about it in Weekender May last year. Their solicitor Mr. Tilson took steps to see that a clause was inserted in the railway’s Parliamentary Bill requiring compensation for any damage to their gas mains and to establish relations with the new company. When the railway opened in 1836 Phoenix supplied the coke for the first locomotives, but what Phoenix did not know was that Colonel Landmann

the South Metropolitan Gas Co. in the Old Kent Road – some of their holders are still with us and one of them is one of only a few which have been listed in London and so will be kept.

Deptford lay between the Phoenix and Old Kent road and, as more and towns had gas works of their own, Deptford people began to want their own gas lighting supply from their own works – and there had been attempts to do that.

had been in discussion with the rival South Metropolitan Company, based in the Old Kent Road, on the question of a supply of gas for the stations and for the line. When Phoenix found this out in 1836 they were not amused and pointed out that they had not been allowed to tender for these lights.

So, why was the railway company talking to the local gas companies? Why didn’t they use their own gas for lighting, and their own coke for fuel? In fact Greenwich Railway Gas Company does not seem to have been a success - and it is very unclear if it actually ever did supply gas to the railway line. There have been descriptions of the lights which people saw in 1837 and 1838 but we now know that the gas for them was supplied by South Met. Gas Works not

By 1838 the railway company had given up trying to make gas and the new works was abandoned and the site was sold to the The Deptford, Rotherhithe and Bermondsey Gas Light and Coke Co. On the Board was a John Barlow and it was his family who built and operated the works. They were contracting to build gas works all over the country and they had a lot of experience – many early gas works were built by them.

Perhaps we should have a quick look at the gas industry in the area. As I said above, from the 1820s gas lighting in Greenwich was supplied by the Phoenix Gas Light and Coke Company from their gas works in Thames Street.

In October 1834 Kentish Mercury announced a meeting 'for the purpose of considering the expediency of immediately forming a GAS LIGHT ESTABLISHMENT'. It was agreed that Deptford 'presents peculiar local facilities for the advantageous formation’ of such a body and it was proposed to call it the 'Deptford and Greenwich Gas Light Company'. In due course The Mercury carried a notice of the formation of the company.

After such a good start it is shame to have to relate that nothing else seems to be heard about this proposal.

The Mercury later reported that a Deptford Gas Works had received an enabling Act of Parliament anda celebratory dinner was held in a pub on Deptford Broadway. It was a 'sumptuous entertainment' for a 'numerous and highly respectable' company. They toasted everyone and everything from ‘The Old Oak Tree' to ' The Army and Navy' and everyone else – but I do not think they ever built a gas works. The only little bit of doubt in my mind is that there was a gas works – a very small www.weekender.co.uk

one – built near the Blackhorse Bridge on the Surrey Canal. As recently as 1986 there was a small gas installation there with a notice inviting you to ring the South Eastern Gas Board at New Cross for information. Perhaps that was the much-celebrated Deptford Gas Works.

The proprietors of the proposed Deptford gas company were all local: Charles Barlee - he was a Deptford coke merchant who was also a churchwarden at St.Nicholas Deptford and whose name is inscribed on bells there installed in 1842. Webster Flockton was a tar distiller based in Spa Road, Bermondsey - the Flocktons were a coal owning family and in 1871 a Webster Flockton is listed as Manager of the Llantwit Red Ash Coal Co. in South Wales. John Twells was the first Deputy Chair of the Greenwich Railway and he had been the moving spirit behind the Greenwich Railway Gas Works. He was related to Philip Twells the MP for the City of London and he had worked with Richard Foster, who was the majority shareholder in South Met. Gas Co.. They had worked together to build churches for godless south and east Londoners. Finally John Wells was a local shipbuilder who built Bickley Hall in Bromley 1780 and later Redleaf at Penshurst, which later became the home of Frank Hills, whom I wrote about last week.

The group who took the railway gas works over were almost the same group of people - Charles Barlee, Webster Flockton, John Wells MP and John Twells – by then deputy chairman of the Greenwich Railway. This means that it was controlled by people who had an

The Deptford Works was eventually sold to the Rotherhithe based Surrey Consumers Gas Co. a gas company which in due course was taken over by South Met. The Deptford works was closed down in 1856, but probably continued to be used as a holder station only. It has transpired that some important mains ran through the site. It appears on the Ordnance Survey for the 1860s with three holders, the little dock and some buildings.

By 1914 only the largest holder in the centre of the site remained. For many, many years the site stood vacant behind a very substantial wall.

From 1838 on the Deptford Rotherhithe and Bermondsey Gas Company supplied gas to the people of the area in competition with the other local gas companies. Not too successfully however, since in 1840 Phoenix secured the contract to light the parish of St. Paul's, Deptford – an area that the new company could well hope to have covered. The reaction of both the older gas companies to the newcomer was

to lower their prices and eventually in 1841 a limited agreement on competition was made between the three of them. These anti-competition agreements were common in the early 19th century gas industry.

By the early 1850s there was yet another gas company in South London – the Surrey Consumers based in Rotherhithe which posed yet more competition.

They made several attempts to buy up the now ailing Deptford works but by that time the Deptford Gas Works had a

neighbour in the shape of Frank Clarke Hills. As I wrote last week and the week before he had a chemical works on Deptford Creek, next door to the gas works and he seems to have used it for his own purposes. In fact it eventually transpired that he had underwritten the Deptford Gas Works to the tune of a loan of £10,000. He had used the works as a testing ground for his various gas purification schemes. The gas works later claimed that there was a footpath through the site over which he had rights although this was contested by some
