A tribute concert at Greenwich Theatre is taking audiences as close as it’s possible to get to the late, legendary French singer Edith Piaf. Weaving together her life and lyrics is award-winning songwriter Christine Bovil, a Glaswegian who fell in love with Piaf’s music at a young age. Bovil presents an unfiltered account of Piaf’s life, which was cut short when the singer died of alcohol and drug abuse aged just 47. This, of course, comes with a chance to hear refined renditions of Piaf’s repertoire, from La Vie En Rose to Non, Je ne Regrette Rien.

Meet female pirates of the past

We publish every Wednesday, covering every postcode sector of the borough, and boasting, by far, the highest weekly circulation in Greenwich. Each week, we deliver to homes in every Greenwich neighbourhood, with further copies stocked at convenient public stands.

Part of Women’s History Month, Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) is celebrating the little-known stories of the female pirates and rebel women who made waves in a male-dominated society. “First we will be screening Matriarchs (March 2, 7pm), which focuses on Ireland’s pirate queen Grace O’Malley and how she met Queen Elizabeth I in Greenwich. Then we’ll be looking at the Chinese pirate Zheng Yi Sao, during a talk about how she became the most successful pirate of all time (March 9, 7pm). Lastly we’ll learn about women in the navy (March 15, 6:30pm), including Anne Jane Thornton, John Taylor Foot (AKA Mary Anne Talbot) and William Brown, who is said to be the first Black woman in the Navy,” Elma Curran, RMG’s Adult Learning Producer, tells the Weekender. “This series of talks hopes to challenge the idea of gender and gender roles. The themes within each talk will be different, from gender-bending and gender imbalance to female empowerment and ageism.

Woolwich homecoming for Afrikan Boy His music has been heard the world over thanks to his collaboration with M.I.A. on her 2007 smash-hit ‘Paper Planes’, now Olushola Ajose, who is better known by his stage name Afrikan Boy, is bringing his music to his home turf of Woolwich – and he couldn’t be more excited to return to his roots. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Afrikan Boy about his inspiration, his hometown and his upcoming gig…

Holly O’Mahony: Woolwich is home for you.

How does it feel to be bringing your music to its newest venue, Woolwich Works?

Afrikan Boy: It feels amazing, it’s like a homecoming gig! I literally grew up around Woolwich works before it was there so to bring all my 15 years of live performing across the world back to where it all started in Woolwich, is like a full-circle moment.

HOM: What or who inspires your music?

HOM: What has been the highlight of your career to date?

AB: My music is inspired by things I or someone else has experienced or would like to experience. I sometimes find it therapeutic to create, helping deal with emotional issues. I am inspired by musicians like Fela Kuti, 2Pac, Dizzee Rascal, Lil Wayne, Wizkid, Miles Davis and Sun Ra and I’m quite eclectic when it comes to influences.

AF: Opening for musical legend Prince at the O2 Arena singing my song ‘One Day I Went to Lidl’! Another highlight is having my children sing my songs and watch me perform on stage.

HOM: People around the world will be familiar with your music from your collaboration with M.I.A. on her 2007 track ‘Paper Planes’. Would you say your music has changed over the years?

AF: You’ll get to hear and experience my music in its purest form. You can also expect to join in some crowd participation! My shows have high energy, good laughs and a great band.

AB: Yeah absolutely. Over the years I have evolved greatly whilst still keeping my core essence alive. New experiences, new sounds, new ways of exploring and expressing myself have all led to the growth that I have had and continue to have.

HOM: Lastly, what’s next for you professionally?

HOM: You weave jazz, Afrobeat and spoken word into your music, but do you still identify fundamentally as a grime artist?

AB: It’s always a sticky question because I literally play all sorts of music: jazz, blues, hip hop, punk rock, Afrobeats and fusion.

to learn certain aspects of music such as counting bars and writing lyrics to have an impact. These skills have followed me over the years into my different areas of exploration. I hold a deep connection to the genre but I’m not necessarily a part of the actual scene. I am an alternative artist who managed to use the genre grime to tell my unique Afrikan Boy story.

HOM: What can audiences expect from your upcoming concert at Woolwich Works?

AF: I’ve got a new album dropping this year and all I can hint is that it’s a love and heartbreak album. I’m also working on another project, probably for 2023.

HOM: Tell us about the programme you’re presenting at the Albany. Are there any highlights you’re especially excited for?

CM: This festival is a dream come true.

I moved to Forest Hill nearly two years ago, so it was thanks to being a part of Lewisham’s Borough of Culture Award that I even started on this project. I’m excited about each and every part of the programme. Grounded Movement, an interactive show comprising rap, spoken word and dance theatre, is an exciting addition to the programme. We also have The Class Work Project, a co-op which publishes literature from poor and working-class writers, sharing the work of their creatives. It’s also great to be able to support others involved in the Borough of Culture Award: Belén L.Yáñez and Laila Sumpton, who I grew up going to dance class with; and Belinda Zhawi, who is co-producer of literary arts organisation BORN::FREE and a She Grrrowls original, are all taking part.

HOM: As well as arts events, there are some fitness classes as part of the programme. What can attendees expect from these?

CM: I knew I wanted some workshops based around movement, and the ones I chose seemed organic. After warming up our bodies for movement in Lateisha Lovelace-Hanson’s ‘ritual for opening’ workshop, and C.O.T.U.’s sound bath, the next two dance workshops will likely

energise everyone. Maike will be playing Soca music as part of ‘Zoca Fitness’, which she runs with her partner. I think dance can be really powerful when it comes to joy and healing – not only the endorphins your body produces, but something about the collective movement. Like many others, I can struggle with body image issues, but dancing means I am able to move my body in the way that feels best for me. Bam Bam Boogie’s ‘Twerk After Work’ really focuses on having fun, and the London-founded global organisation was introduced to me by poet and Twerk instructor Sofia Chei. We’ll have Jennifer Petrina leading this, who like me is a ‘highly sensitive person’, and as healing is at the centre of her practice, she is just perfect for leading this part of the programme.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope audiences take away from attending She Grrrowls at the Albany?

CM: Aside from the political and feminist undercurrents that will always be part of She Grrrowls, the point of doing these events is to create a platform for artists to say what they want to say. I know there still may be parts of the event that are challenging, and there is sure to be thought-provoking stuff, but I feel like we really need some time for joy and healing, so I want people to really enjoy themselves and to connect in a meaningful way for each part of the programme they attend.

As there are so many local artists taking part, I hope this will be inspiring, too.

Bringing Frankenstein’s monster to life on stage Mary Shelley’s gothic novel Frankenstein has chilled and enchanted readers since its publication in 1818 – when the young author was just 20 years old. It’s been adapted for stage and screen countless times, remaining a compelling warning cry about the dangers of tampering with nature’s order and trying to play god, over 200 years after it was written. Blackeyed Theatre, a touring theatre company headed up by Adrian McDougall, brings a revamped revival of its 2016 production of the story to the Greenwich Theatre stage, directed by Eliot Giuralarocca, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The Geneva-set story charts the aftermath of Victor Frankenstein’s science experiment gone wrong. In pursuit of nature’s secret, the elixir of life, Frankenstein has created an autonomous monster, who he then abandons to disastrous consequences.

I spoke to Eliot about his production, which brings to life the horror through ensemble storytelling, live music and puppetry.

Holly O’Mahony: What attracted you to directing Mary Shelley’s famous story about a scientist’s cat-and-mouse chase with his roaming monster?

Eliot Giuralarocca: In 2016, Adrian approached me with the idea of directing Frankenstein. I’d directed Dracula for the company a couple of years previously and had really enjoyed meeting the challenges that the gothic horror genre presented. Working on Dracula was a very creative experience: along with a fantastic ensemble of actor-musicians,

we developed a physical, storytelling style for the show, which thankfully proved popular with audiences. Having directed Dracula, taking on Frankenstein seemed like a natural next step. I knew Mary Shelley’s novel well; the 200th anniversary of its publication was approaching and it just felt like the right time to do it, so I jumped at the chance!

HOM: You’re working with John Ginman’s adaptation of the story.

How did you come to choose it?

EG: We had worked with John previously; he’d written a muscular, taut script for Dracula, faithful to the spirit of the novel yet full of theatrical inventiveness. He did a fantastic job again on the Frankenstein we toured in 2016, adapting and editing Mary Shelley’s sprawling novel into a fast-paced, exciting and theatrically driven story. Six years has passed since then, so we decided to give the script a dramaturgical overhaul. For this re-mount, Nick Lane – who adapted Blackeyed Theatre’s productions of Jane Eyre,

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of Four – has written a brand-new script based on John’s original adaptation.

HOM: How does the new script compare with the original one? What sort of updates have been made?

EG: Nick has a great ear for dialogue and for the detail of character. He’s updated the role of Elizabeth, sharpening her sensibility and strength, and making her a little bit more independent of thought while remaining true to the period and the source material. In 2022, it’s important that the female characters in 19th Century novels – who can sometimes seem to be just appendages of men in the story – have their own voice and agency. This seems especially apt when you consider the remarkable fact that Mary Shelley wrote this hugely influential novel when she was only 18 years old.

HOM: What are some of the highlight features of your production?

EG: I suppose for me, one of my touchstones for the piece was the structure of the novel, which takes the form of a story within a story, within a story. We start with Captain Robert Walton recounting his journey to the North Pole where he meets an exhausted, half-dead Victor Frankenstein. Frankenstein then proceeds to tell Walton the story of his life and then within Frankenstein’s story, the Creature tells his own story as well. This ‘Russian doll’ structure sparked my imagination. The novel suddenly felt like a dark gothic fairy tale with a nightmarish and dream-like quality that seemed to flow from this.

HOM: How do you incorporate live music into the narrative?

EG: All music and sound is created live by the company. As well as traditional instruments like piano, timpani, harmonicas, accordion, cymbals and drums, bits of set are hit to create sound and rhythm, and we also use all sorts of weird and wonderful instruments including a water-phone, a saw, bells, whistles, a thunder drum, glocks and singing bowls to create the soundscape of the show.

HOM: That sounds very resourceful! You also use puppets to bring the story to life.

Is this something you’ve done before?

EG: When I first adapted Frankenstein, I was fairly new to working with puppets, so it was a bit of a voyage of discovery!

I very much underestimated the amount of rehearsal time needed to get it right and what a physical challenge it would be for the actor/puppeteers. In my rehearsal plan I had scheduled puppetry scenes as if the puppet was, in effect, just another actor. However, I soon discovered that every time the Creature moves you editorial@weekender.co.uk

need to create an intricate piece of choreography that needs to be drilled over and over again, and perfected over time!

HOM: It sounds like it might have been easier to employ another actor…

EG: When you get puppeteering right a kind of magical alchemy happens, and after a few seconds the audience stops seeing the puppeteers and instead just sees the puppet moving in the space as if it has a life of its own. The decision to make the Creature a life-sized puppet – beautifully and painstakingly made by Yvonne Stone – seemed to fit perfectly. Frankenstein is obsessed with reanimating dead matter by finding the spark of creation, the ‘elixir of life’. In bringing our Creature to life theatrically, animating, manipulating and breathing life into it in front of your eyes, I hope we present a lovely theatrical metaphor for the act of creation in the story itself.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope audiences take away from seeing your production of Frankenstein that they might not have gleaned from the original source material or other interpretations of the story?

EG: Our company of five performers use puppetry, live music and bold ensemble storytelling not only to bring Mary Shelley’s gothic thriller to life, but to celebrate the excitement of live theatre.

If audiences leave the theatre excited and entertained by what they’ve seen as well as being moved and challenged by the complex moral questions that this tale provokes, I’d be delighted!

“We are more like a family than a football club” - My experience with Charlton Invicta

Charlton Invicta were the first LGBTQI+ team to be affiliated with a professional club’s community trust.

I’m Calum and I’m proud to play for Charlton Invicta FC – breaking down barriers and helping to make football a more inclusive game.

To have support from a professional club like Charlton Athletic and its Community Trust is huge. This not only gives us a platform and the visibility to show the change we are making in football but also reaches out to people in the community giving opportunities to get back into football just like Invicta helped me.

I have many great memories of playing but the best would be the Semi-Finals in the Gay Football Supporters’ Network last summer and beating a team who hadn’t lost in over a year. This was a great moment for me as I scored but it was also our first final as a club!

Last summer we decided to enter the North Kent Sunday Football League Division 5, an affiliated football league. This has been a breath of fresh air for our club because it shows we are willing to step out of our comfort zone to really help make a change in football for the better.

For a player to be comfortable to come out they would need to feel like they are in a safe space and have the right support network around them.

Australian men’s player Josh Cavallo coming out last year will hopefully help players that are still not out feel comfortable to take that step.

Recently Charlton dedicated a match to FootballvHomophobia, an international initiative that exists to challenge discrimination based on sexual orientation gender identity and expression at all levels of football.

Invicta is a great club to join as we pride ourselves on being inclusive of everyone, no matter your skill level, age, gender or sexual orientation. We are more like a family than a football club, and offer support in all ways we can. I have made so many great memories and friends for life, and we are also not too bad at football!

Football has made great progress in recent years and I feel like clubs and players are ready to accept an openly gay or bisexual male player in the professional men’s game, however, I feel like some fans are not. Time and more education is needed.

History

The mysterious Evelyn Wharf

Mary Mills Well, after two weeks worth of articles speculating on the history of industry on Deptford Creek, it’s about time I started moving on.

So I will carry on working down the Creek describing it wharf by wharf. The last ones I really did were the Sun Wharves just down from the Bird’s Nest pub – and so, the next one is Evelyn Wharf The Deptford Creek Conservation Area report describes Evelyn Wharf as ‘historic’ but doesn’t say why it is. However, it does describe some of the features of the Wharf and how they see it as a bit posher than some of its neighbours.

They note a 19th-century two storey workshop building which faces the street and inside the yard they describe the ‘high quality granite setts‘ with which it is paved – again describing both them and the boundary wall as ‘historic’.

Along the street facing wall is written ‘Evelyn Wharf’ in large letters. It notes the ‘substantial gates which frame the entrance to the site’ with ‘stone coping to the piers... indicating that this once constituted an entrance to a much more substantial industrial premises’.

A lot of my time this week has been taken up with trying to find out what those ‘substantial industrial premises’ were and I wouldn’t say that I had found it. Today this is a busy site with many good causes having premises there –predominantly a bicycle repair and second hand shop. I’m sure some of them will have done vast amounts of research

on it and will read what I’m writing here with a little snigger - but never mind.

To add to the general air of confusion about Evelyn Wharf is the provenance of the building at 6 Creekside, between Evelyn and Harold Wharves. At the moment it appears to me to be a complete mystery. The Deptford Conservation Area report describes it as an ‘interesting industrial building dating from the late 19th century, with a gently curving frontage, crenellated roof line and cast iron windows’. They also think it must’ve been bombed amd that a top storey or maybe two top storeys are missing. However, on the London Bomb Sites web site this area is remarkable for not having been bombed at all – and consultation with our local expert on the subject has come up with a similar result. It is an interesting building which appears to have had considerable architectural merit. This Creekside building is not shown on the 1897s insurance plans of the area, so we can guess that the Conservation Area report is right and it’s from the first or second decade of the 20th century.

The earliest references that I found for Evelyn Wharf date from the 1850s when it appears to be run by a Mr. G.F. Stevens who is offering quantities of ‘good stone’ to the various local authorities in the area - all of whom turned him down. They give no details as to why this is – if they object to being solicited or if the price is wrong.

However it is clear that Mr. Stevens is not doing well. By 1857 the wharf appears to be in the hands of a Mr. J.F. Corbett who is selling by auction ‘40 tons of Yorkshire Stone comprising tooled York paving, inch and inch and a half Robin Hoods slabs, 3 inch Robin Hood landings, headstones

etc etc. I have no idea what a ‘Robin Hood landing’ is. He was also selling a ‘Builder’s Cart’ and ‘a light Chaise Cart’.

Predictably in 1858 there is an advertisement for Evelyn Wharf to be let or sold; with ‘immediate possession.

It tells us it ‘has room for three barges alongside’ and there is a crane and ‘other conveniences’, stores, stabling for 30 horses, a roomy yard and a new eight-roomed dwelling house attached.

The property seems to have been acquired eventually by a Mr. William Parry who used it as a pottery. When I started researching this article I was aware that there were a number of early potteries in Deptford which were owned by various members of the Parry family and that I would end up writing the all up. But this Mr. Parry wasn’t there for very long - in fact about six years and that to my mind isn’t really a success. Normally I wouldn’t really take much notice of six year tenure but Mr. Parry used his short spell at the wharf to advertise energetically – in fact if you look up Evelyn Wharf on the local newspaper archive almost all you will find are Mr. Parry's attempts to sell his wares.

Mr. Parry sold and manufactured the sort of pottery which we don’t really think about - sewer pipes, chimney stacks and the like. Much of it was ‘redware’- the sort of stuff that they used to make flower pots out of. In 1861 Mr.Parry got a patent for an ‘improved way of making chimney pots’ as well as chimney pedestals and other articles made from clay. Mr. Parry also described himself as a coal merchant. But generally he was a ‘brick, lime and tile merchant’ and in 1860 his works at Deptford is described as the ‘chief office of the company’.

Sadly in 1864 Mr. Parry petitioned for bankruptcy and sooner or later we find that the lease on the wharf is up for sale.

It is described as a ‘commodious wharf with 150 feet wharfage on Deptford Creek’. There is also an advertisement from a young man aged 23 who gives his address as Evelyn Wharf who is anxious to find employment as a barman because he would like a ‘thorough insight into every branch of the trade’. There are also accounts of an extraordinarily long court case about this bankruptcy which the recovery of £16. 12s 2d. - which even the 1870s doesn’t seem to be a vast sum to go to court for. It is confusing in that nearly everyone involved in the case from the bankrupt, the creditors and even the lawyer have the name of Parry – one whom turns out to be ‘our’ Mr. Parry’s mother. More arguments later on in the case were about who it was who actually submitted the written petition and what their names were.

It’s probably a big family row of some sort which a sensible historian should ignore. The Parry family had a long and distinguished record as potters on a number of sites along Deptford Creek editorial@weekender.co.uk

and William Parry’s short stay at Evelyn Wharf is only a small episode in that.

None of this account so far has told us why the wharf has this rather posh gateway nor anything about the mysterious building alongside it. But even more mysterious is that in 1866 there was a submission to the local Board of Works to build a chimney on the site, along with three houses and shops, for a Zinc and Galvanized Iron Works.

Now I got quite excited about this because one of the reports says that it’s being done for the Vielle Montagne company working with Frederick Braby and I thought– ‘wow - I’ve discovered a major company on this site - which would account for the posh buildings and everything’. But oh no The Societe des Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vielle Montagne dated from 1837 and exploited a mine in what became Belgium. Since then they have worked a zinc mine in Zinkgruvan in Sweden. On-line notes about the Company say they didn’t come to www.weekender.co.uk

History Britain until 1896, but they do seem to have had agency arrangements – one of which was indeed with Frederick Braby. Braby, now Bristol based, are a big company originally specializing in galvanized iron. They had two works in Deptford - the Ida Works up at the Blackhorse Bridge on the Surrey Canal and the Victoria Works in Grove Street.

There is no mention whatsoever of a works in Creekside. And what about that chimney? There is no chimney on the 1897 insurance plans of Evelyn Wharf.

In the later part of the 19th century – at least by 1872 - John Penn and Sons engine company owned this site. They had a major works in Blackheath Road – which I wrote about some months ago in this paper. They made engines for the world’s most important ships and a great deal else. They also had what is now Payne’s Wharf at Upper Watergate in Deptford on the Greenwich Lewisham border. They appear as the owners of Evelyn Wharf on the 1897s Goad code insurance plans and the deeds for the site are mentioned in Richard Hartree’s book on the Penn family which implies ownership.

Clearly the Wharf must have been used

by Penn’s to take heavy goods by water down to the Thames. It would have been easier to take large items there from Blackheath Road than to drag them all the way down to Payne's Wharf by road.

However all was not necessarily well - in 1872 an angry letter to the local paper described the nuisance caused by Penn’s and gives us some details about the noise made by their traction engines. These were used to transfer coal and other items from Blackheath Road to Slaughter House Lane in Deptford. ‘The vibration

caused by the engine and tracks disturbs the sleep at the unreasonable hour of 3 am …. The injuries caused to house property … ceilings and roof suffers greatly … (it has) hitherto been drawn by horses and carts in the day ‘. They call on the District Board of Works to ‘remedy the greatest of street nuisances.’

An accident is also reported to a Mr. Anderson who both lived at and managed Evelyn Wharf for Penn’s. He seems to

have slipped when a barge fell with the tide and he landed in a barge loaded with pig iron. He managed to scramble out but was reported to be in the Miller Hospital.

I have another report in 1880 for a galvanized iron factory on Evelyn Wharf.

Now it would be perfectly reasonable for Penn’s to galvanize iron but the 1897 insurance plans for Evelyn Wharf show only one building on site and I would have

thought that if they were manufacturing anything there that they would need more than one building. So I must continue to say that I don’t know who built that gateway – although a wealthy company like

Penn’s could well have afforded it.

I also can’t explain the long frontage of the building fronting on Creekside - which I guess was built after Penn’s had left the site.

The industries of Lewisham’s Creekside are proving more elusive than those on the Greenwich side. I have a report of a car manufacturing company moving there around 1900– but I don’t know the site address or the street number.

So – hmm – I’ll let you know if I find out. But I am wondering about Evelyn Wharf or its neighbour. Deptford built motors! Well – one of the many things I have missed in these articles is the very early vehicle built on the Merryweather site, so I need to come back to that.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) proposes to make the above-mentioned Orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49, 124 and Part IV of Schedule 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

The general effect of the Orders would be to: a) introduce a disabled persons’ ‘blue badge’ parking place on Mottisfont Road, east side, outside No. 60; b) introduce a double yellow line ‘at any time restriction on Ferry Place for its entire length; c) update the map tiles attached to The Greenwich (Free Parking Places, Loading Places and Waiting, Loading and Stopping Restrictions) Consolidation Order 2018 and The Greenwich (Charged-For Parking Places) Consolidation Order 2018 so as to reflect the provisions referred to in sub-paragraphs (a) and (b).

The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by National Grid who need to carry out remedial works.

The Order will come into operation on 17th March 2022 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However, the works are expected to take 4 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from, exiting, proceeding, or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading), on to Sidcup Road from West Park.

Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via West Park, Mottingham Road, Court Road and Sidcup Road. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.

The Order will come into operation on 11th March 2022 and 18th March and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 4 days each. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit pedestrians from entering, exiting, proceeding through the footpath between 32 & 34 Fairthorn Road and Westcombe Hill footbridge.

Whilst the Order is in operation pedestrians will be diverted via Fairthorn Road footpath, Woolwich Road footpath, Farmdale Road footpath and vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force.

Project Hope raises £16k to thank local NHS Staff!

In January 2021, the Council and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust launched Project Hope as a way of harnessing the goodwill of our communities to support NHS staff.

During this time, we saw volunteers from Charlton Athletic Community Trust join forces with our staff, local businesses and more for the cause.

Cllr Denise Scott-McDonald, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “We have been completely humbled at the generosity of people in Royal Greenwich.

Through working together, we have been able to show NHS staff at the heart of our community just how valuable the work they do is.

International Women’s Free Fairtrade Fortnight family events Day 2022

On Tuesday 8 March, the Council will be hosting an event in association with the HER Centre, a local women’s charity that provides services to women and girls in Royal Greenwich. It takes place at Clockhouse Community Centre, SE18 5QL from midday to 3pm.

To celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight, why not drop into the Eltham and Plumstead Centres to make some healthy snacks and crafts!

You’ll be able to take these home with you, from African jewellery, Fairtrade country flags and delicious desserts.

There will be speeches on women’s health and safety and well-being as well as information stalls, a free creche for children under five years old, and massage and taster tai chi sessions (all subject to availability). Lunch will be provided.
