Last chance: see Sonic Ray Head to the river banks of Greenwich Peninsula and see an eerie beam of green light shooting across the River Thames, projecting the sound of a 1000-year-long musical composition known as Longplayer.

Devised by sound artist Jem Finer (also a founding member of punk band The Pogues) in collaboration with site-specific art organisation Art Angel, the installation known as Sonic Ray encodes the music of the composition into the light beam and transmits it at the speed of light. Here, it travels from the Faraday lighthouse on Trinity Buoy Wharf to the opposite bank of the river, creating a listening post aboard Richard Wilson’s nautical sculpture Slice of Reality, on the Greenwich peninsula foreshore.

Fit for royalty: Queen’s House ice rink returns

The ground has been frozen over, the Christmas trees are standing to attention and if you listen closely, you’ll hear the jolly murmurings of familiar seasonal songs as you approach: yes, the Queen’s House ice rink has returned for the third winter running, offering visitors a majestic space to practice their leaps, twirls and glides this festive season, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Set against the regal backdrop of The Queen’s House, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the ice rink is a particularly enchanting space to transition from railing-hugging wobbler to elegant glider this winter, while enjoying views of both the landmark house and nearby Greenwich Park. Despite the location’s obvious charms, this will only be the third year of the ice rink, which launched in 2019 becoming the only seasonal ice rink south of the river in London.

So, what’s new at the ice rink for 2021? “This year, the rink will offer a lovely viewing platform where non-skaters can enjoy watching their loved ones and drink in the views of both Queen’s House and the Canary Wharf skyline,” reveals Claire Bastin, head of events at Royal Museums Greenwich. And it’s good news for those who plan to tie in their trip to the rink with a spot present buying.

“We will also be offering a cloakroom service rather than lockers so that skaters can store their Christmas shopping bags safely,” she grins.

If you’re bringing any Bambi-like little ones to the ice rink, it’s worth noting that there are no formal lessons on offer this year. “But there will be exclusive parent and toddler sessions every Tuesday, from 10am – 11am during term time,” points out Claire. “In addition, there will be two exclusive sessions for groups with additional needs.”

Happily, the penguins (okay, penguin-shaped supports for young skaters) are slip-sliding their way back onto the rink this year – just remember to pre-book yours along with your tickets to ensure there’s a sturdy birdy available.

As for additional entertainment, Claire says to expect “lots of Christmas songs being played as you skate and [a chance to] admire the beautiful lit up Christmas trees,” surrounding the rink like a quasi fir forest.

Once dizzy, frozen-toed and in need of refreshments, skaters will be able to enjoy a range of winter warmers from healthy fast food chain Benugo,

which is managing a catering stall on site this year. “Visitors to the rink can enjoy a mulled wine, warm apple pie, a Baileys coffee or a mini prosecco to get them in the festive mood,” reveals Claire. For little ones, a classic hot chocolate will be available.

Those after something more substantial, meanwhile, should head to the nearby Parkside Café, where a soup of the day, a fish finger sandwich and a maritime burger are among the offerings. Kids can look forward to a yummy plate of sausages, quorn sausages or fish fingers, all of which come with either beans and chips of broccoli.

The stately beauty of the location – fit to match that of the rinks outside the Romanesque-style Natural History Museum (which is offering its final ice skating season this winter) and the Georgian masterpiece that is

Somerset House – is very much part of the appeal. “Greenwich is such a beautiful place to visit all year round but skating in front of the striking Queen’s House and taking in the views of a UNESCO world heritage site at Christmas feels particularly magical,” Kate Seekts, development director at Royal Museums Greenwich, told the Weekender last year. “Also, as the Queen’s House ice rink is the only outdoor rink in South London, we especially want to be able to bring this back for our local residents.”

Artist Lydia Chan’s ship has landed “I’d like to think of myself as the poster child of Maximalism,” says multidisciplinary artist Lydia Chan. The Canadian-born set designer, who counts Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, Jorja Smith and Gucci among her clients, has been selected for NOW Gallery’s Design Commission 2021. Her subsequent exhibition, Your Ship Has Landed, opens at the gallery this Friday, offering viewers a colourful, futuristic, fantastical escape from the dreary winter weather, writes Holly O’Mahony…

ARTS Your Ship Has Landed becomes the gallery’s eighth Design Commission, with Lydia following in the playful footsteps of Emmanuelle Moureaux, Camille Walala and Fred Butler among others.

“For our Design Commission we wanted to create a place for people to come in and perform. Lydia’s presentation was wild and thoughtful, and we knew it would add a colour, light and comic sensibility in the winter months,” says NOW Gallery curator Jemima Burrill.

Central to Lydia’s work are bright colours and whimsical shapes, while cartoonlike monsters are recurring motifs.

Together, she hopes these themes will evoke a sense of child-like wonder in her viewers. “I think one of the reasons why we give bright colors to children is because of its immediacy and simulating qualities,” she says. “There is almost a kind of honesty and innocence to seeing a colour and being happy.”

Lydia loves science and maths, and for her, creating artworks of monsters is about “finding fantasy in the rigidity and seriousness of science.” She adds: “I like creating colorful, fun monsters because it’s a way for me to focus on the possibilities of the unknown and the fantasy of the undecided without having to address the potential dangers.”

As a result, the exhibition should appeal to a diverse range of visitors.

“The aim is that you will feel like a child again. So yes the exhibition is for all ages, anyone who is young in spirit and interested in exploring new terrain,” adds Jemima.

“The visitors should expect to be immersed in color and funny blobby shapes,” Lydia hints. “I hope people can come to a place and feel like they jumped into a colourful world of funny sounds and silly characters, and escape the very serious undertone of the year we have been having.”

The exhibition is a production of lockdown. “Your Ship has Landed is based on the idea that being stuck in our homes for longer periods of time, desperate to go outside and explore and enjoy life again, is like being stuck on a spaceship traveling light years not knowing whether or not we will find a liveable planet,” says the artist.

“Lydia has created a new environment where you can strike a pose and land your ship somewhere with an alternative vibe, taking you away from the reality today,” Jemima adds.

Why does her style make her a maximalist? “I think minimalism is about condensing all the power and putting it into a single object. Maximalism is about collective power; it’s about repetition and the rhythm that a collection of objects create as they vibrate and resonate with each other,” Lydia explains.

Excitingly, the exhibition also uses technology to incorporate an element of alternative reality (AR) into the viewer’s experience. Through it, the artist hopes to bridge the gap between our relatively recently adopted digital lifestyle and our renewed appreciation for the natural world post lockdown.

“The exhibition is an immersive installation with something to look at and stimulate you from all angles, whether it’s the AR filters we have created with digital artists Songyee Kim and Thibaut Evrard or the exhibition [itself where] you are surrounded by objects,” adds Lydia.

“I think as an artist, in a selfish way, I make things that first and foremost make me happy or bring me pleasure. If visitors come and they also feel pleasure, then it means that we have a connection; that there is a commonality between us.”

A key element to recent NOW Gallery exhibitions and installations has been the addition of special performance-led events, allowing viewers to engage with the visual works through different mediums.

“Performance is vital to us; it adds a new way of looking at an exhibition and brings in new audiences,” points out Jemima. “We are partnering with someone exciting – to be announced shortly – for two NOW Lates in the new year.”

The events will offer two very different evenings of music and performance, both based around Lydia’s exhibition. “We love our gallery being used in different ways and our acoustics are excellent.

The installation is a stage for exciting things to happen,” Jemima continues.

For Lydia, at the heart of the art she creates is a desire to offer an escape from everyday life. “The need for an escape remains constant for humanity. In times of distress, people need some place to feel pleasure and breathe joy, [while] in good times the escape provides a space to

The Silk Mills and the man who invented tinsel

Mary Mills For the last two weeks in our journey up the Ravensbourne looking at industrial sites I have been writing about The Armoury Mill, which I think is one of the most important sites on the river.

We left the site when the Royal Armoury had become the Royal Small Arms factory and had then moved to Enfield, where it was to grow and flourish to become a major part of the British arms manufacturing industry. Today the site is a block of flats called The Silk Works and we need to see what happened to the mill in the 200 odd years between the armoury closing and the flats that are there today...

I am sure a lot of us who grew up in Northwest Kent and South East London in the 1950s and ‘60s knew more about silk manufacture than most people.

Like a lot of children I was taken on school trips to the Lullingstone silk farm, where we were shown the whole

process. Lots of us took home packs of eggs which ended up with a tray of smelly caterpillars in our unfortunate mother's kitchens where they needed to be kept warm. Later, once they had become cocoons, we would have to boil the poor creatures and then we could wind the beautiful silk thread off the cocoons. I remember doing that and I’m sure a lot of people who were children then did the same. This process, obviously on a larger scale, is used in the production of silk to make cloth or whatever is needed.

Silk manufacture was famously encouraged in England by King James 1. He wanted to set up silk manufacturing and he is said to have opened a small silk works at Charlton House. The unfortunate sacrificial worms eat the leaves of Mulberry trees and so there was a big push in the early 17th century to plant mulberry trees all over the place. In fact you can hardly find a Mulberry tree today that isn’t claimed to have been planted by James I. There is by the way an excellent database of mulberries around London. https://www.moruslondinium.org/.

Locally there is of course the one at Charlton House – it's in the car park and drops its purple fruit onto people’s light coloured cars. There is another local one in the grounds of what is now called Sayes Court Park in Deptford - which of

course was once the gardens of John Evelyn’s home. I was once very touched to see a parent there was showing a child the mulberry tree and letting them try just one mulberry - because the rest had to be left for other children.

So in 1819 the Armoury Mill moved to Enfield and the site was put up for sale and auctioned off in July. The property included a house, a warehouse, lodges, eight houses and many acres of land. The mill itself was a two storey weather boarded building with a slate roof. There was a water wheel. and all the necessary equipment to manage the water which ran the mill. It is said to have been a huge and impressive building - and as a government building it would be. There were two iron cannon on the massive gate posts and these are now in front of the Manor House at Lee. Sixty years later the site is still described as something that could pass for an outlying department to the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich. The area surrounding the building was encircled by a ‘venerable brick wall - stout and high’ . There was a large pond in front of the works and of course the Ravensbourne flowed alongside the site. We should perhaps note that the local press during the late 19th century recorded many concerns about the state of the water and machinery in both the Ravensbourne

and the mill pond at the works.

Initially at auction the mill did not reach its reserve price. It was sold eventually to a miller from Vauxhall and then leased a few years later to Robert Arnold, who was a silk throwster from Warwickshire. He installed machinery and began to recruit a workforce.

‘Throwing’ silk is part of the process of turning the raw silk from the silkworms into usable thread. The raw silk is soaked in soap suds and then placed on rails and wound onto bobbins. It is twisted to form the eventual threads, but it is not drawn out as would be done in cotton and wool spinning. It will then be sold on to the silk weavers. It is thought that the raw silk which Arnold used would have come from China or elsewhere but from outside of Britain.

Records show that Arnold was using as his workforce young girls who were being bound to him as apprentices from the poor houses of inner London parishes. These girls were in their very, very early teens and some rather younger – they were bound until they were 21. I do not know how well or badly they were treated and would be interested to know. There are some real horror stories from some other places.

became less important and work at the mill was focused on gold and silver wire drawing. This product had many uses in decorative items both here and abroad. Some of it was used for the decoration of military uniforms. The Lewisham Silk Mill was seen as one of the main manufacturers of this gold and silver lace thread in the country and as late as the 1890s there was a display at Chelsea Royal Military Exhibition as the best example of this work in the country.

In the 1840s Arnold brought his nephews Frederick and Edward Stanton into work at the mill. When he died they became owners of the mill and operators of the gold and silver thread manufacture. They were said to be good employers. The works however continued to be called The Silk Mill and that is said to be a name designed to hide the true fact that they were processing precious metals inside the factory. In the process of making gold and silver thread metal is drawn into the form of wire which is then flattened. Only water power was used and was especially suitable for this work because of its regular action. However there were also two steam engines and steam hammer on site -probably ones inherited from the Armoury Mill.

and 2000 yards depending on what was needed. It was drawn through holes in steel plates and then through even smaller holes in diamonds and sapphires. The end result was finer than human hair. It was flattened by means of steel rollers made by Krups of Essen and then twisted round silk by spinning engines. Most of the finished article was sent to India where it was converted into oriental cloth – using gold threads at 1000 yards an ounce.

Another story is that in order to make a transit instrument for an astronomer wire was drawn to 20,000 yards for an ounce of gold - traditionally a spider’s web would’ve been used for this work.

In 1881 the mill is described as a “structure which could be mistaken for a paper mill - it’s in pleasant grounds with approaches of water some acres an extent in front of it, with a stream which drives the middle wheel. It is maybe like a cotton mill”.

It is described in 1921 as standing in picturesque grounds with an orchard and rhododendrons. The employer lived on site, there were peacocks and tennis courts situated on what had been the millpond. The mill had its own band and they played at celebrations reported in the local press.

been used for decorative paint work on wood. There was about 2% of gold to the silver. The leaf was laid on the silver bars evenly and this was heated over a charcoal fire. It was held in vices and burnished and then was ready to be drawn into wires – using beeswax for lubrication. They needed strong men to do this part of the operation using a windlass. They needed wire was so fine that every ounce was drawn out to abut to between 500 www.weekender.co.uk

Much of the material which I’ve based this article on comes from Sylvia McCartney and John West’s book “The Lewisham Silk Mills” - and I would very much like to recommend not only the book but also inside, where reminiscences are included from ladies whom they interviewed who had actually worked at the mill.

I’m afraid I don’t have much space to quote them here, but what they have to say about their work and the products using precious metals is absolutely fascinating. A collection of items from the silk mill is in the Lewisham Council Local Study Centre.

Demand for gold braid for the military finally began to fall off during the Great War and by the 1920s the silk mill was clearly in trouble. It was wound up in 1926, and by that time the Stanton family had dispersed; the original managers had died or moved away. In 1929 the remaining precious metals on

site were sold. Following that a number of other firms used the site – among them in 1930 Warp Knitters who made artificial silk; the Armoury Wire and Tinsel Company and many others.

There was a factory making zips, others making cable and switchgear and all sorts of other things. When the site was eventually cleared vaults are found under the orchard and among debris removed was lead shot from the old small arms factory. Culverts were revealed under the car park.

Firms came and went, until the site went for ‘redevelopment’ and there are now flats there.

However I wanted to draw attention to one of the most amazing characters from the factory and also what is a very remarkable and popular Greenwich invention. That is tinsel - what you’re all going to have on your Christmas tree.

William Harris was born in Deptford and brought up in Greenwich in Mell Street. He began work in the rope works - which I assume was Enderbys.

He moved to Deptford where he brought up a family including two sons.

In 1862 he began work at the Silk Mill as an engineer and stayed on for 50 years as the chief engineer. He was clearly interested in many other things.

Earlier he had invented a throat tube to help diphtheria sufferers to breathe and made a special silver version for the German Emperor, who was dying of throat cancer. He invented a printing machine for ribbon lace which

was eventually passed to a firm in Preston, who became the only people able to produce it. But his important invention is that of tinsel - one day he saw silk thread with bright shavings of metal on it and he set about fixing the shavings to the silk. He made samples and before long the mill had 300 men making tinsel and selling hundreds of pounds worth – so he made a fortune for others but didn’t benefit himself.

Harris continued to have a remarkable life - he set his sons up as a bicycle business in Loampit Hill - and they developed the Presto pedal cycle as one of the earliest manufacturers of bicycles like this in the country. William himself remained a cyclist into his 80s.

He was an activist with the artillery volunteers at Holly Hedge House and a crack gunner on the ranges at Plumstead. He was also a musician in the band but I don’t know what he played. At the age of 84 he took his first aeroplane flight in a seaplane from Eastbourne. As he got older he was nationally known and at 102 he was London’s oldest living man, although blind in one eye. He eventually attended the golden weddings of both his sons.

Although there doesn’t seem to be anything much left on the Silk Mills site itself to see now - we can at least remember Mr Harris and the invention of tinsel. None of this says much of the great Tudor Armoury and its mill.

But both posh Tudor Armour and gold and silver thread embroidery were about glitter and show.

White Ribbon evening event on 25 November White Ribbon Day, 25 November, is marked around the world and is the largest global initiative to end violence against women by calling on men to make a difference.

Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “After the recent tragedy of Sabina Nessa’s murder in our borough, now more than ever this is a real opportunity to end violence against women once and for all.

The council is asking its communities to come together and say no to violence against women and will be running a free event from 5pm to 8.30pm at OneSpace in Kidbrooke Park Road, SE3.

“As men, we can all make a difference by thinking about our own behaviour and being prepared to call out sexism, misogyny and harassment when we see it. The sooner it is called out, talked about and learned about, the sooner men will understand how they can support women and end harassment and violence.”

We will be sharing resources, information and a series of talks from local organisations doing incredible work to prevent violence against women. Little Fish Theatre Company will be speaking about its groundbreaking Embrace Project in schools, whilst the Her Centre will be shining a light on the amazing work it does to support victims of violence against women in the area.
