We have appointed Kauma Arts to work with residents to develop the vibrant festival that will shine a light on the diversity and depth of dance and culture in the borough, and we are now calling for performers at all levels to get involved.

Kathryn Tickell, OBE, has long been a name on the English folk scene, admired for her mastery of the Northumbrian smallpipes and fiddle. With her band The Darkening, Kathryn is performing at Blackheath Halls this Sunday, bringing some of the oldest Northumbrian tunes and songs to life inside the historic concert hall. Expect fresh sounds merging with ancient influences as Kathryn looks to weave contemporary resonance and attitude into the historic music.

Blow your horns!

The Horn Fair returns to Charlton House and Gardens this weekend, in a merry celebration of community life in Greenwich after the lockdowns. Present laughter with John Bishop Comedian John Bishop is coming to Bromley’s Churchill Theatre as part of an international tour of his latest stand-up show Right Here, Right Now. A school-friendly Macbeth at the Churchill Theatre studio A new version of Shakespeare’s classic tale of fate and murderous ambition comes to the studio space at Bromley’s Churchill Theatre. Glenn Tillin and Kitty Myers, together with their theatre company Quarter Too Ensemble, present an intimate version of the production that brings its audience up close to the titular Macbeth as he treds towards his bloody destiny.

The production is suitable for secondary schoolaged children and will be toured around schools in the future, but this week marks a chance to see it at the theatre. Holly O’Mahony speaks to the company’s co-artistic director Glenn Tillin to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Firstly, could you start by telling us a little bit about yourself and your company Quarter Too Ensemble?

Glenn Tellin: I always wanted to be an actor. I always enjoyed imagining myself as other characters and later, when I learnt to play guitar and trained as an actormusician, I really became interested in how music and instruments become part of the storytelling. I also really love the collaboration involved in creating theatre.

These are the elements that come together in the work of Quarter Too Ensemble.

HOM: What made you decide to create theatre with a younger audience in mind?

GT: When Kitty [Myers, co-artistic director] and I had children, it opened our perspective to making work with young people in mind. We realised how segregated theatre for different ages was and wanted to make work that appealed across generations.

HOM: Tell us about your take on Macbeth.

What makes it stand out as a production?

GT: Macbeth is my favourite Shakespeare play. It gives me the impression that it knows itself, kind of like the film Scream: it plays on the horror, suspense and gruesome violence, and takes it to an extreme, but there is always a feeling that it’s winking at you in its absurdity like a story told around a campfire. We wanted to create a production that emphasised the feeling of intimate storytelling. The use of torches to illuminate the actors’ faces helps, but it’s also in the closeness: when Macbeth asks ‘Is this a

GT: it’s fast-paced, gruesome and fun.

Like Macbeth says, ‘a tale told by an idiot... signifying nothing’. The story is timeless with its themes of treachery, supernatural influences, love and murder. It is the classic example of a

dagger which I see before me?’ the audience is close enough to feel the question.

HOM: How have you found the experience of picking up the show again a whole year later?

HOM: You’ve composed your own soundscape for the show. Can you tell us more about this?

GT: Bringing the show back has had its problems; some cast members are no longer available and school bookings have proved hard as many schools were still nervous to commit to anything because of the uncertainty of what would be allowed come autumn. After this revival, we hope to get back to planning a school tour. One great thing that has come out of the last year is Zoom. There’s a lot of text work that can now be rehearsed that way and it has made our rehearsal schedule much more practical. Obviously there is no substitute to being in person but it does help economise.

GT: The soundscape has several functions, from evoking the atmosphere of war to mirroring the rhythm of the dialogue, for example with the Three Witches’ ‘Double, double toil and trouble’ speech. The Witches are also recorded in our production, rather than their characters being physically represented, and they rely on the distorted sound to be conjured in the audience’s imagination. Sound is so evocative.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope audiences take away from seeing your production of Macbeth?

HOM: In addition to performing at the Churchill Theatre studio, you’re also planning on taking your Macbeth to schools. Can you tell us more about this?

GT: This is the third restaging of our production. Between late 2019 and early 2020, we developed the show in two blocks and performed it at Churchill Theatre with the intention of touring to schools. We had taken it out on a mini tour to test in March 2020 and had great feedback. The plan was to book a larger tour, but lockdown stopped everything. Our last performance at Dover College in Kent took place only a few days before the first national lockdown, and meant leaving our set and props stuck in storage at the school for a whole year.

GT: Our main aim is to tell the story clearly and playfully. If our audience can get right into the action, understand what is happening and follow the characters easily, then they can imagine with us and experience the same excitement I have always had in imagining myself into characters and stories.

A visit to Design District Canteen North Greenwich has officially launched its Design District, a cluster of 16 buildings designed by eight different architects, which hopes to become a permanent working hub for those working in the creative industries. The bulging stomach of the development is the Design District Canteen, a bubbleshaped, yellow-framed complex housing six independent food traders, a bar and plenty of space to eat and socialise.

First, a bit about the Design District itself. The multiplex was conceived by urban regenerator and property developer Knight Dragon, and while still in development (at the time of writing, two thirds of the site is finished), it will eventually have the capacity to house an ecosystem of 1,800 workers. Seventy-eight percent of the space has been let so far – all to those working within the creative industries – with designers, florists, ceramicists, architects, dance troupe Clod Ensemble and LGBTQ+ cultural charity Queercircle among those to have secured a spot.

Ravensbourne University has opened a post-graduate centre, the Institute of Creativity and Technology, in one of the buildings, and there’s also a members’ clubcum-co-working space called Bureau, providing desks as well as spaces for meetings and socialising.

There’s also a sky-high netted basketball court, as Instagrammable as it is practical with 360-degree views of the London skyline.

Design District Canteen itself is the vision of Madrid-based architects SelgasCano, with management consultancy Prescient Group – whose portfolio of projects includes Old Spitalfields Market and Petersham Nurseries at Covent Garden – stepping in to source traders and spruce the space with ambiance. Living trees breathe life into the bubble, while festoon lighting twinkles up above the tables. ‘What about the food?’, you cry. Okay, okay, here’s the deal: each

of the six traders has been chosen for their versatility, both in terms of bringing something different to the canteen and to our British perception of the cuisine they serve.

Ehla Ehla, meaning ‘welcome’ in Arabic and ‘come over’ in Greek, is a culinary celebration of specialities from the Middle East, with Palestinian falafel, Turkish salads, Syrian shawarma and Greek pastries among the items on its healthy but hearty menu. Not all dishes are perfect – the falafel was a little cold and tough on our visit and the spanakopita could have been warmer – but Ehla deserves a medal for its inclusivity of flavours from across the whole region and it’s worth asking the team here to talk you through what you’re eating.

Sugo At modern Italian counter Sugo, deep fried dishes are the order of the day. Yup, forget pizza and pasta, and instead, behold a lengthy menu of arancini filled with a rainbow of flavours: from pork ragù to tomato and mozzarella. Split a portion (or two) with a hungry pal to try as many varieties as possible, and leave room for one of Nonna’s brownies.

There are sandwiches, too, for those craving a more balanced bite. We didn’t try them on our visit, but fillings include porchetta and burrata.

is family-run north-east Indian stand Raastawala. Here, the speciality dish is the Kolkata kati roll, a soft, plump naan bread topped with a fried egg and your choice of spicy lamb kebabs, tandoori chicken or chickpeas, smothered in the brand’s Great Taste award-winning coriander chutney.

If the kati rolls are Raastawala’s gateway dish, their spicy water bombs are the zingy high not to be missed: six hollow semolina puffs come filled with spiced potatoes, to which you pour in an added shot of spicy tamarind sauce for an authentic Indian street food experience. Also excellent is the Kabli Keema Chola Pau, a curry of minced lamb and chickpeas served with sweet, pillowy brioche buns and tangy pickles.

All this can, nay must, be washed down with a creamy mango lassi.

Guasa On t’other side of the complex, Guasa is introducing Londoners to the best of Venezuelan street food with a menu weighted towards arepas: gluten-free corn buns filled here with pulled chicken, jackfruit buffalo beef or smoky beans. There’s quinoa-based bowls and further sides too – do try the yuca fries. If Guasa looks familiar, you may have sampled its dishes at Elephant and Castle’s Mercato Metropolitano or Old Spitalfields Market, where founder David also runs popular stalls.

Charcuterie Sandwich & Cheese Bar specialises in gourmet toasties made with bread from lauded east London bakery Rinkoff – which also provides the stall a selection of its crodoughs (croissant doughnuts, do keep up) for afters. Wagyu salt beef, cornish lobster and treacle-cured bacon are tipped to be menu highlights, while a Cornish gouda raclette served with potatoes and fermented vegetables will appease the bread averse.

Eat Lah If Raastawala is the highlight on the right-hand side of the canteen, Eat Lah is its equivalent on the left. Founded in 2019 by husbandand-wife duo Robert and Melanie, Eat Lah champions the flavours (and colours) of Malaysian cuisine, showcasing these in Nasi Kerabu (blue rice-based) curries with a chocolate box assortment of toppings, including creamy satay chicken and dissolve-in-your-mouth chicken rendang. Our advice? Opt for the ‘Cham Cham’, a chance to fill your box with two different mains. Do leave room for a portion of the Malaysian fried wings, and similarly, a dessert of pandan panna cotta which comes coconut-topped and palm sugar-drizzled, and is mercifully light after the main event.

A bar at the front of the venue serves a drinks menu spanning coffees to cocktails and everything in between, allowing visitors to caffeinate ahead of a day’s work, get the pints in before a gig or wind down with a natural wine at the end of a long day.

Heading back into the night after an evening eating our way around the bright yellow bubble, North Greenwich has never seemed so vibey. Roller skaters with light up wheels perform tricks in front of cheering crowds, as waves of concert-goers spill out of the O2 arena, flowing towards the tube.

The Design District Canteen may have popped up in a market heavily saturated with fast food options, but it’s the rumbling belly at the centre of an exciting regeneration for the area, and its offering is global, independent and unique.

The Penn family shipbuilders

Mary Mills On this trip up the sites on Deptford Creek we have found all sorts of sites, from obscure local building suppliers to some very big names. There were also some important innovators – we will see more of them as we go back down the Lewisham bank. The firm we are about to come to was both a very big name and an important innovator.

To enable it to be included here is also one of the reasons I have gone some way along the older eastern course of the Ravensbourne and the Greenwich boundary.

This factory was on the site now generally known as ‘Wickes’ – and it was on the trading estate where Wickes is located, although the older works would have included some plots now used for housing. Their site ran from Blackheath Road down to the old stream and another boundary was what is still called John Penn Street.

In 1799 John Penn established an agricultural machinery and engineering business in what was then Coldbath Street – there may have been a bath house there previously. Several researchers wrote long articles which went in the Greenwich Industrial History Newsletter, and argued with each other on the exact location, entrances, dwelling houses and more

of 17 and his ‘grasshopper’ engine became the first to power the works.

on this works – and I’m happy to give anyone the references to these articles if they want (just ask!). But all you really need to know is that Wickes and other shops and some houses are now on the site of the John Penn’s works – and there were three John Penns.

We need to remember that in those days London shipbuilding was preeminent. Down river from the Tower lay shipyard after shipyard where innovative and justly famous ships were built, including, of course, in this period ships which fought famous naval battles and others which dominated the world’s commerce. However the first steam ships were also on the River and would replace the great wooden ships.

London’s shipbuilders could handle that but steam ships need engines.

South East London was to provide the engineering skills to build them.

There is no space here to detail them or their work but, it is important to say that the most prolific, innovative and thus most important was John Penn.

This earliest John Penn came from Bristol where he had worked and trained as a millwright. He was not the only soon-to-be-famous name in engineering to come to London in this period and in 1805 he was one of a group who founded a millwright’s society here. His son, also John Penn, was born in 1805 and from the age of 13 was apprenticed in his father’s Blackheath Road factory. He was to build his first steam engine at the age

Should you go to Dresden you might want to go on a river trip down the Elbe and there is a historic paddle steamer, Diesbar, which does these trips. She is advertised as being powered by the oldest functioning steam engine in the world. I think we should be a bit ashamed that the Diesbar’s website neither mentions that that engine was made in London, or that it was made

by Penn’s. It dates from 1841 and was made originally for a ship called

Bohemia. Back in the 2000s I was actually asked to go to a celebration of Diesbar in Dresden. At the time I was a local councillor and it would have been good to say that I took the good wishes of Greenwich people and Greenwich Council with me – but, as it turned out I couldn’t go anyway, for personal reasons. Which was a pity.

firm– a small bollard with their name on it. They also had a wharf –Evelyn Wharf – on the Lewisham bank of Deptford Creek shortly below the tide mill, and we will get to that sooner rather than later. Clearly they must have needed a means of water transport for their heavier products which was reasonably close by Blackheath Road.

The older John Penn died in 1843. The firm was then inherited by his son John who was ‘driving the business forward into marine engineering’. In that year he heard that the Admiralty wanted to commission more powerful engines for naval vessels and that existing contractors Birmingham based Boulton and Watt’s engines would be too heavy.

Penn, uninvited, sent in a tender for a light engine of twice the power - –his “smaller, lighter and more modern oscillating engine”. These first Penn engines for the Navy were fitted on the official yacht, Black Eagle, and from then on Penn was the major suppliers of steam engines to the Navy, also moving on to screw propulsion methods.

In Portsmouth is the preserved warship Warrior – and I have written about her before. She was built within view of Greenwich over on the mouth of Bow Creek at Thames Ironworks in 1861 - 8 years before Cutty Sark was built in the Clyde, incidentally. Warrior was built to be really, really scary and to be really, really modern. Many of her component parts came from Greenwich and Woolwich engineering works and of course her engines were from Penn’s. By the time she was restored the Penn engines were gone but replicas have since been made and installed (as an aside I can’t see any mention of Penn’s on the Warrior website.

The firm also took on a riverside site at what is now Payne’s wharf – I wrote about that site for Weekender in December 2019. This was Penn’s boiler shop and there remains on the road side there the one relic of the

History the wreck of the iron steamer SS Xantho, which sank in 1872. It is the only known example of what was the first massproduced, high speed and high pressure marine steam engine. It was the result of a feat of co-ordination of mechanical engineers by John Penn on behalf of the Admiralty, an act which “made the great Continental Powers stare with wonder”.

The younger John Penn died in 1878 – remembered as “great man, one of the most distinguished workers of his age and country”. He died at his great house in Belmont Hill, Blackheath – The Cedars – now flats. Cedars Close is on part of his gardens.

A third John Penn was to follow and manage the company which continued to make and sell groundbreaking engines but, as with all these families, the third generation also had gentlemanly interests beyond the workplace. John Penn III also stood as a Tory in local elections and became MP for Lewisham and ‘a leading parliamentary golfer’.

Another memory of the firm can be found in Greenwich South Street in the Penn Almshouses. They were

intended as a memorial to the second John Penn and were for poor men and their widows who had worked in Penn’s factory. Today, of course they work with the Council and other local almshouses to house local old people.

In the 1880s times became harder as shipbuilding on the Thames began to lose its force and firms moved to the north and to Scotland. Penn’s became a limited company – John Penn and Sons Ltd. The 1890s saw them return to building massive triple expansion engines for a new age of warships as the threat of conflict with Germany began to emerge. Increasingly however they could not compete in price with ship and engine builders from the north.

In 1899 they began negotiations to merge with Thames Ironworks. Thames Ironworks was the great warship builder from Bow Creek where Warrior had been built as well as many more warships and flagships. I could go into a lot of details about how in the early 20th century it was chaired by Arnold Hills, vegetarian, temperance, partially paralysed – and they too were suffering from government orders placed with northern firms. John Penn III died in 1903.

Thames Ironworks invested in the Greenwich site and much of the contract work for HMS Thunderer was carried out there in 1911. Thunderer was to be the last warship built on the Thames. There were no more orders and Arnold Hills spoke to 10,000 London workmen from his invalid basket in Trafalgar Square.

Orders were going north and their jobs were gone. The quality of London

shipbuilding and engineering was never in doubt – it was the cost which killed it.

Gradually Thames Ironworks moved to the manufacture of steam powered cars and lorries at Greenwich.

It was too late and in May 1913 the Blackheath Road site and its equipment were up for auction.

Some of us will remember the site before Wickes took it over in the 1980s.

The remains of the Penn works had been a bakery for some years and Penn’s old pattern shop still stood. Many requests had been made for its preservation and listing. As the Council finally made the move to have it listed the developer demolished it ultra-quick. I am not aware of any memorial to the Penns on the site now although I know there are some plaques in surrounding streets.

We should take more notice of the Penn works. We may not like or approve of their products destined for military use – but we need to take notice of the technology, the inventiveness, and the skills of their employees. To have a job at Penn’s was a measure of a worker’s ability.

Why are they so forgotten –although to be honest, they are remembered rather more than some others.

There are many websites and books about Penn’s. But I would like to recommend ‘John Penn and Sons of Greenwich’ by the late Richard Hartree (Landmark publishing 2008). Can I add that it was really difficult to get any Greenwich bookshops to take copies for sale?

Charlton Family come together to celebrate Black History Month

Friday 1 October marked the start of Black History Month, and Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has been actively working on tackling inequality and social injustice across the communities it works with.

As the first community trust to have a dedicated Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) strand, and with a dedicated EDI working group, CACT is proud to be working to embed EDI across the organisation as a whole as well as beyond. Further to this, CACT and Charlton Athletic’s Head of EDI, Dr Michael Seeraj, is working in partnership with the Club on an ongoing EDI consultation framework to set out strategic priorities up to 2024.

Here is a brief excerpt of Dr Seeraj’s statement explaining the importance of Black History Month:
