An eerie beam of green light is set to shoot across the River Thames, projecting the sound of a 1000-year long musical composition known as Longplayer. Devised by sound artist Jem Finer (also a founding member of punk band The Pogues) in collaboration with site-specific art organisation Art Angel, the installation known as Sonic Ray encodes the music of the composition into the light beam and transmits it at the speed of light. Here, it’s set to travel from the Faraday lighthouse on Trinity Buoy Wharf to the opposite bank of the river, creating a listening post aboard Richard Wilson’s nautical sculpture Slice of Reality, on the Greenwich peninsula foreshore. Thames Festival Trust’s annual Rivers of the World project has come to Greenwich. Pupils from six secondary schools across the borough have created artworks in response to their local river environments, with St Mary Magdalene Church of England School, Eltham Hill School, The Halley Academy, Newhaven School, Woolwich Polytechnic School and Plumstead Manor School all taking part. Each school has also been paired with a partner school in Accra, Ghana, and the resulting works offer a global as well as local outlook. ARTS & ENTS Since its inception in 2005, Rivers of the World has been hosted by a different London borough each year and with a different partnering country.

Malawi, Kenya, Palestine and India are among those to have taken part in the past. This is the first time that the exhibition has been held in Greenwich.

The students have worked with professional art facilitators to create collaborative artworks that tackle themes including river ecosystems, the relationship between rivers and cities and rivers as a vital resource to local communities.

In Greenwich, pupils worked with London-based artist Shona Watt, whose work focuses on themes of architecture, climate change, landscape and people.

In Ghana, pupils were mentored by painter, illustrator and street artist Bright Ackwerh, whose depictions of figures with cartoonishly large heads notoriously inspire conversation around socio-political and religious issues.

The artworks are currently on show both in Greenwich and Accra, Ghana.

“The final artworks are delivered as digital files in order for them to be printed in each participating location,” explains Kate Forde, Head of Education & Engagement at Totally Thames Festival. “The students go through an art and design process, where they each make a piece of work and these individual pieces are then collaged together through Photoshop to create the final design,” she adds.

Twenty pupils were selected to have their work shown from each of the local participating schools, with teachers picking pupils based on their ability, interest in art or as a reward to those lacking in opportunities.

Woolwich Works opens with an exhibition on colour

Now in its 16th year, the project has been applied in 45 countries around the world and every year, Kate says she is amazed by the way the artists and young people interpret the themes, and are able to tell their own stories about their local rivers and environment.

Woolwich Works, a new, large-scale performing arts venue which has been under construction for several years, has opened its doors to the public. Housed in a cluster of former military Grade II and II* buildings, the venue plays home to several prestigious organisations and annual events, including The National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), immersive theatre company Punchdrunk, the Chineke! orchestra, Luca Silvestrini’s dance company Protein and the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair. The opening line-up of events includes a free exhibition of works by local black artists, Black in Full Colour, which coincides with Black History Month, writes Holly O’Mahony…

“Climate change and pollution are the universal themes which are very prevalent this year but more than anything the general feeling around the world has been of joy at being able to be part of a project which has lifted spirits and taken young people’s minds off the pandemic,” she says.

“We hope that through the programme young people feel more invested in their local area and the environment. Through the common global issues of pollution and climate change we also hope that they feel more connected to one another and empowered to action change.”

In order to source and collate the works showing within the exhibition, the team at Woolwich Works partnered with The Collective Makers, a duo of local visual artists Lison Sabrina Musset and Joseph Ijoyemi, who mentor rising artists from ethnically diverse backgrounds and look to create opportunities for young artists within the borough of Greenwich.

The pair put forward works by some of the best emerging black visual artists from the borough and beyond.

The exhibition includes the work of the yet-to-be-announced winner of the Black

in Full Colour open call competition.

Visitors can hear live from the winner in a talk together with co-curators Lison and Joseph on October 6 at 5:30pm. A second talk, on October 20 at 5:30pm, brings visual artist Othello De’SouzaHartley to the gallery space, where he’ll be speaking to Joseph about the themes behind his work including identity, masculinity and gender. Othello’s work has been exhibited in prestigious spaces including the National Portrait Gallery and the Photographers’ Gallery.

Black in Full Colour runs for the entirety of Black History Month (October 1 – 31) in the Lillian Barker Space at Woolwich Works, marking the first of a series of free visual art exhibitions to be hosted there over the course of the year.

The works are being performed to an original composition by Trinity Laban student cellist Daniella Nassar.

“Daniella was inspired by the venue,” says Shona Newmark, producer of Greenwich Shorts. “The sound world of the cello is explored with each monologue, creating a different atmosphere to change character, colour, shape and momentum.”

Shona believes the cello is also a fitting musical accompaniment for an evening of monologues. “The natural warmth and vibrations created by the cello resemble the human voice,” she says.

Make yourself at home: Christopher Green presents a digital care home experience In 2019, artist Christopher Green invited audiences to a 48-hour experiential show set inside a fake care home. Now, the experience is going digital and global. In a collaboration between Christopher, The Albany and Entelechy Arts in Deptford and Japanese organisation Saitama Arts, The Digital Home merges cutting edge technology, interactive games, film and satire to create both a British and Japanese care home experience for audiences to explore virtually at their leisure. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Christopher Green to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: The Home began life as a physical piece through which audience members could experience living in a care home. Can you tell us about the decision to adapt The Home into a digital experience?

Christopher Green: I had always seen The Home as a live experiential piece. That’s my background – and for a long time I’d wanted to create a show where the audience could live within the piece. But because we were unable to stage the live show in Tokyo because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I spent a week thinking creatively about the essentials of what I was trying to achieve and how to create that digitally. This game is the result of that process and the many collaborations that have brought it to life.

HOM: Practically speaking, how will it work? And what technologies have you used to create The Digital Home?

CG: It’s both a HTML online experience and a full downloadable game.

So every punter experiences it for themselves. They create an avatar of themselves – as they are now, not as a fantasy old person – and move that avatar into the Care Home, of which there’s both a UK and Japanese version. Once inside, they can move around, interact with staff and residents, play mini-games about different aspects of care and watch short bespoke films.

HOM: Tell us about the partnership with Japanese organisation Saitama Arts? How did this come about?

CG: I am an artistic associate with Deptford organisation Entelechy Arts, which has an existing relationship with Saitama. They are the perfect partners for this as they have a full theatre company and a company of older actors. I worked with a very large team from Saitama to create the Japanese content. That collaboration has been an amazing creative process. From an in-person visit in January 2020 when we were www.weekender.co.uk

Spotlight still planning the live show to many, many Zoom calls, they have made a full Japanese offer within my creative framework of The Home Organisation.

The Japan Foundation has funded and supported this process.

HOM: How do Japanese care homes differ from those typically found in the UK? CG: There are many cultural differences and it was an extraordinary experience getting to visit so many care homes in Japan in early 2020.

But again and again, we came up against the differences in funding. The Home is about the tension between care and control. How much freedom can you have if you’re vulnerable?

But the Japanese team think I am obsessed with the other big tension within The Home: the relationship between care and capitalism. Because in the UK we have allowed care for the vulnerable to be used as a way to make money, it’s people farming.

We’ve all allowed it to happen and it’s time to question that.

What will their life be like? Not to depress anyone, but maybe residential care is another chance at a fresh start! Like the climate emergency, the crisis in residential care requires us to engage and not think “It’s all too complex, what can I do?”

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow comes to haunt Churchill Theatre The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a well-known ghost story. Written

by American author Washington Irving and first published in 1819, it has since enjoyed numerous adaptations, including a 1949 Walt Disney animation which renamed the story The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and Tim Burton’s terrifying 1999 version starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci. Each retelling brings fresh chances to be thoroughly chilled by the tale of a secluded glen haunted by a headless horseman. But what could be more terrifying than watching the story live? Audiences at the Churchill Theatre are about to find out, writes Holly O’Mahony…

A new stage adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, written by Philip Meeks and directed by Jake Smith, is coming to haunt the Churchill Theatre this week as part of a national tour. Starring in the ensemble production are Coronation Street’s Wendi Peters and Bill Ward.

The Weekender spoke to Bill Ward for a heads up (or down) about the show…

Holly O’Mahony: Bill, you play five different characters in the production. Can you tell us any more about your various roles?

Bill Ward: Apart from Sam Jackson

who plays Ichabod Crane, we all play a variety of different parts in the show.

My main character is Baltus Van Tassel, who is the head of the village of Sleepy Hollow, but I also get to play an alcoholic coachman, a 95-year-old female chef, a mad Dutch Sea Captain and a shady American businessman. It’s brilliant fun.

who adapts it a fair amount of latitude.

Ours is a brand new version written by the playwright Philip Meeks. It’s fast moving, funny, physical, unnerving and definitely scary in places; it’s a very different beast to Tim Burton’s 1999 film. We have a number of illusions dotted throughout the show.

HOM: How has the story been adapted for the stage in this production?

HOM: Oh do you? Crucially, how is the story’s chief antagonist, the headless horseman, being brought to life?

BW: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is an American classic but what’s interesting is that Washington Irving’s original story is actually very short – only 20 or 30 pages long. So that tends to give anyone

BW: I’m not sure I’m allowed to say! I do know he’s going to be pretty scary though. He’s being brought to life by Illusionist Filipe J. Carvalho, who has

done large scale illusions for all sorts of shows, including the current production of Back to the Future in the West End. HOM: What does the experience of watching a live horror offer an audience that a filmed version perhaps doesn’t?

BW: The very fact that it’s live and happening right in front of you makes it different. I think one of the things that’s come out of the pandemic is that as a society we’ve all missed just being together and getting out.

Whether it’s going to see a band, a film, going dancing – anything – theatre is brilliant for that.

HOM: How has the last 18 months been for you as an actor? What were you working on when the pandemic struck?

BW: It’s well documented how horrendous the last 18 months has been for the theatre industry, which has spent much of the pandemic fighting for its survival. I was touring a play, The Glee Club, for one of my favourite theatre companies Out of Joint [which has recently rebranded as Stockroom]. It was a beautiful piece of work about a group of miners who sang close harmony in barbershop style. On March 16 last year, the Prime Minister gave his speech asking the public to avoid large indoor

gatherings, including theatres. At 5pm that day we had a job, and by the time he finished speaking at 6pm, we didn’t. We were only two weeks into a six-month tour. It was pretty heartbreaking.

HOM: It must feel great to be back on the road as part of a production touring nationally?

BW: I’m really looking forward to it. We’re all chomping at the bit to get it out on the road.

HOM: Lastly, what’s next for you professionally following the tour?

BW: I’m also a professional landscape photographer and I have a very busy December and early January lined up with my camera, leading a number of photography tours and workshops all over the country.

After that, we very much hope to continue with the Sleepy Hollow tour throughout the first half of 2022.

The Greenwich lime kilns

Mary Mills Before moving on up the Creek to Lewisham it might be interesting to look at some of the older industries along its banks and in the surrounding area as well as some others we have left out. There was one industry which was predominant up until the 19th century.

In the middle ages the land along the east, the Greenwich side of the Creek was called Lez Brokes and there is a record of a lime kiln here in 1481. This was operated by Thomas Waller, lime burner of Deptford, who later had a cottage and garden nearby. The lime kiln was on the site of Mumford’s Mill and what was Hope Wharf and it had gone by 1535.

There were probably other later lime kilns along the Lewisham bank of the Creek associated with the pottery industry. However lime kilns were ubiquitous throughout Greenwich until the 20th century – many associated with the numerous chalk extraction sites. In the area immediately near the creek there was a complex of kilns on Blackheath Hill and nearby Greenwich South Street was called Lime Kiln Lane, the area generally being known as the ‘The Lime Kilns’.

When I have been on industrial archaeology visits to different parts of the country, I have often been taken to see preserved lime kilns – usually huge stone structures with little reference to why they were built where they were. Inevitably nothing has been preserved in Greenwich or in fact in most of London – but there is one old lime kiln which you can see not too far away. This is preserved in Burgess Park in Peckham and it once stood alongside the Grand Surrey Canal. Burgess Park is largely built on the line of the Surrey Canal and there are several things which remain from it in the park. If you want to see the kiln you can get there on the 53 bus. Road and walk straight down the park, past the lake, cross over Wells Way and the kiln is straight ahead.

The Southwark lime kiln is now Grade II listed. It was built in 1816 by builders’ suppliers Edward R Burtt & Sons. It was used until 1925 and then occasionally until the 1950s. In 2002, it was restored

by Groundwork Southwark. Local schools & community groups helped research its past.

What was it for and how was it used?

Coal and limestone was carried to it on the canal by barge – say, about 25 tons. The limestone would be broken into small pieces and put layered with coal in the kiln. It was lit from below and burnt at over 1000˚C. It was allowed to burn for 3 days and allowed to cool for 2 days, on the seventh day it would be unloaded and sent out to customers – again, probably by barge.

Lime had countless industrial uses and the process for making it dates from ancient times. It was a key ingredient in the mortar used for building work, as an ingredient in stucco for the exterior of buildings and for lime wash used as a paint. It was also used as an agricultural fertiliser to improve soil by neutralising any acidity. Quick lime was used as a deodorizer and disinfectant. However we can guess that the Burgess Park kiln produced lime for building work, since it was owned by a building supplies company – and the process by which the lime was made would have been relatively www.weekender.co.uk

‘modern’. A kiln from the early 19th century would most likely have been a ‘draw kiln’ running what was almost a continuous process developing from the very earliest kilns which would probably have been temporary structures destroyed after each load.

We know almost nothing about the kiln which stood on the Deptford Creek site in the 15th century. We can assume that it, and other kilns in the area, used chalk as their raw material – and the pits all the way down Blackheath Hill and the surrounding area are where that came from. Although the basic process was the same a medieval kiln may have been managed differently or been built to a different design.

The process was dangerous and produced bad smells and smoke.

Limekilns were not found in town centres but insolated areas on the outskirts. On Blackheath Hill and Deptford Creek they were away from the centres of Greenwich and Lewisham and near the sources of their raw material as well as means of transportation.

The Steers family have been mentioned in various books and articles in connection with the Blackheath Cavern under The Point.

They were lime burners here over three generations; William in the 17th century was described in official documents as ‘a lime burner’, as was his son Thomas, and then later his grandson Innocent. Jane Steers was a ‘lime merchant of Lewisham’ in the 19th century. Another local lime merchant advertising his works at Sun Wharf on the Creek was James Smith who had a coke and grey stone lime works.

There is a history of deaths around lime kilns - rough sleepers might use them for find warmth on a cold night

and fall into the burning mass – as well as suicides. There are frequent newspaper reports of accidents where workers tripped and fell. If I was to get really literary I would mention the death of Jim Holliman who falls into a lime kiln in Henry Williamson’s novel ‘The Beautiful Years’. Williamson was brought up in Lewisham and may well have just seen the last of some of the local limekilns.

There are also newspaper reports of young women taken to the vicinity of the kilns for purposes of seduction - presumably because of the isolation. Sadly the girl might find herself pregnant and end her days in the kiln by suicide or murder.

In the 1820s an American inventor called Jacob Perkins is said to have used the Blackheath Hill lime kiln area for experimenting on his steam gun; which was no doubt both noisy and dangerous. This was a fully automatic machine gun, powered by steam rather than by gunpowder. Although not the first automatic firearm, it was the first to also have a magazine capacity of more than a handful of rounds. It operated with musket balls at a firing rate of 1,000 rounds per minute.

Perkins had asked John Penn & Sons, millwrights and engineers based just across the road in Coldbath Street, to make the gun for him. John Penn entrusted the work to his son, also John Penn. The steam gun with its wrought iron rifled barrel of 3 inches calibre Greenwich proved to be as efficient as Perkins had hoped during trials at the lime kilns but it is said to have been rejected by the Duke of Wellington as 'too destructive'.

The local settlement named after the lime kilns was farther on the site of what was later Trinity Church and which is now the Undercliff flats. There are said to have been

at least three kiln sites in this area.

One of the lime burners here was an Elias Wood with a site on the Lewisham side of the road opposite Maidenstone Hill - presumably in the area where The Horse and Groom pub stood. People may remember that in the late 1990s the pub suddenly collapsed from being a three storey building to a two storey one.

Most of the lime produced on Blackheath Hill will have gone off to its customers on barge from Deptford Creek. The New Cross Turnpike Trust recorded their intention of getting Mr Wood, Mr. Steers and Captain Hammond; all lime burners, to pay towards the costs of maintenance of Blackheath Hill. This was because of the damage done by their carts to the road surface on their way to the Creek. In 1739 they wanted to install a special toll gate to recover costs from the lime burner – this had particular reference to Innocent Steers.

Lime burning was a major industry until the mid-nineteenth century when cement began to be used for building and better fertiliser developed. There are abandoned lime kilns all over the country, although few in London.

Locally we were made more conscious of it in 2002 when Blackheath Hill collapsed dramatically and the extent of the burrowing and mining and removal of chalk and stone from the hillside became only too clear.

Since then there has been more local interest - for example in the now defunct Underground Greenwich web site and more recently by David Waller who has published an article in Subterraenea and given an influential talk to Greenwich Industrial History Society. Christopher Philpotts in his work on the archaeology of the Creek pointed out the existence of several kilns.

There were probably many others.

2021-2022 PFA Player Ambassadors announced

Last year’s PFA Community Champion, Ryan Inniss, and fellow defender, Jason Pearce are amongst the players getting involved this year

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) is delighted to confirm that eight men’s first-team players have committed to support its work within the local community this season as Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player Ambassadors.

These include 2020-2021 Community Champion Ryan Inniss, who will be the Mental Health and Wellbeing Ambassador. The defender, 26, has previously engaged with programmes such as the Charlton Upbeats Down’s syndrome team, which he organised a Zoom Q&A and dance-off for during lockdown.

Fellow centre-back Jason Pearce has actively supported CACT’s work throughout his time with the Club and will continue his role of Disability Ambassador this season. Pearce, 33, has been involved with the Upbeats project and other disability teams,

as well as CACT’s newly relaunched Charlton Challenge sessions, and various holiday football courses.

Ben Purrington remains National Citizen Service (NCS) Ambassador.

The 25-year-old has engaged with CACT’s annual NCS themed matchday, where he spoke to young people from the social action programme about their experiences via Zoom, and supported Young Greenwich youth service events.

Josh Davison will take over the role of Social Inclusion Ambassador this season, and recently spoke about the importance of players supporting CACT’s Street Violence Ruins Lives work at the dedicated themed matchday on Saturday 11 September.

Summer signing Sean Clare will take on the role of Kick it Out/Show Racism the Red Card Ambassador this season.

Conor Washington will become Education Ambassador, while George Dobson will become the ambassador for Health.

Jayden Stockley will take on the role of Women’s Football Ambassador, following Charlton Athletic Women going professional for the first time this summer.
