Cllr Morrow added: “Meeting Fola and Evadney was very inspiring. I am so grateful to Evadney, and all our dedicated carers, who give so much time and love to our children.

Fola and Evadney welcomed Councillor Matt Morrow, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, into their home to speak about the rewards of fostering.

Evadney said: “Fostering is a full-time job, but the rewards at the end are immense. You help young people grow up, help them become the best they can be.

Shooting for the stars: winning images from Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition go on show Milky Way rising over Durdle Door © Anthony Sullivan

The shortlisted and winning entries from the 13th annual Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition go on show in a public exhibition at the National Maritime Museum this Friday, September 18, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The 2021 exhibition attracted over 4,500 entries, with photographers from around the world submitting their best celestial shots. The overall winner’s prize will see the chosen photographer take home a £10,000 prize. The commended, runner up and winning entries are being announced in a ceremony on Wednesday September 16, which can be watched live on Facebook or YouTube at 6:30pm.

The shortlisted entries – over 100 photographs in total – will be available to view as part of the year-long exhibition, illuminated in lightbox displays.

Holly O’Mahony: Beginning with the practical, who is the Astronomy Photography of the Year competition open to and how do people enter?

Emily Drabek-Maunder: The adult competition is open to anyone aged 16 and over, and we also have a young competition open to anyone under 16. Entry opens in January and can be accessed via the Royal Museums Greenwich website. Applicants must register [with a fee of £10 for adult entries] and can put forward up to 10 images with their submission.

HOM: Your team of judges has the tough job of whittling down entries from 4,500 to just over 100. Can you tell us a bit about the selection process?

E D-M: Taking thousands of images and picking the best 100 is always a difficult process and sometimes there are heated debates around the judging table! The images go through several stages of judging.

First, they are ‘longlisted’, meaning that the images go through an initial sifting phase. Then the images are ‘shortlisted’, meaning we are trying to get down to the 100 or so

images that will be featured in the Astronomy Photographer of the Year publication. From the shortlisted images, we begin our final judging process, which consists of choosing the highly commended, runnerup and winning images for each category as well as the special prize winners. From the category winners, we decide the winning image for Astronomy Photographer of the Year.

HOM: What sort of things do you typically look for in the winning photo?

E D-M: There are a range of things we are looking for in a winning image. The image must fulfill the requirements for each category, which defines an astronomical object or setting a photograph must feature to be considered in the competition. From past experience, winning images are often visually captivating, technically challenging, tell a story (or have a unique backstory), and highlight interesting

astronomy. In short – they have it all!

HOM: Thinking about the entries as a whole, were there any common themes this year?

E D-M: There were a few different themes this year, mainly centred around astronomical events that were happening. Many people submitted images of Mars after the plethora of 2020 launches to the planet, including NASA’s Perseverance spacecraft and China’s Tianwen-1 spacecraft.

The planet also had its closest approach in October 2020, which is the closest point it will be to the Earth in a two-year period. Additionally, many entrants submitted images of Comet NEOWISE, which was discovered on March 27, 2020 and graced northern hemisphere skies.

HOM: Are there any unifying traits between the 100 images selected to go on show?

E D-M: The shortlisted images

featured in the exhibition are all unique in their own ways, from the topic of the image to the method in which they were taken. The unifying traits are that the images take skill, perseverance and creativity from the photographers.

HOM: What can visitors expect from the resulting 2021 exhibition?

What’s especially exciting about it?

E D-M: Every year, the skill and innovation of the images never cease to amaze me. This year was a challenge for everyone around the world, including astrophotographers who often have to travel to special locations to take stunning images of our skies. The 2021 exhibition is particularly exciting because astrophotographers had to be creative in the ways they took their photographs, sometimes setting up telescopes in their back gardens or using periods of isolation as sources of inspiration. www.weekender.co.uk

ARTS & ENTS HOM: Lastly, any advice for budding astronomy photographers who might be thinking about entering the competition in the future?

E D-M: To get started, the best thing I would recommend is to learn what is in the night sky at different times – everything from constellations to planets and the phases of the Moon. You can spot many things with your eyes without needing a telescope. You can get started with astrophotography by using equipment you might already have; some mobile phones and tablets are now equipped with software that has a ‘night mode’ setting, which allows you to take longer exposure images in lower light environments. Start out by capturing cityscapes, landscapes and brighter astronomical objects like the Moon.

Emily’s hot tip: If you aren’t into taking your own photographs, then why not look up some publiclyavailable images from research telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope? In the competition, the Annie Maunder Prize for Image Innovation actually asks entrants to innovate these images and submit them into the competition.

They’re all performing at the 13th annual Greenwich Comedy Festival, which returns to the grounds of the National Maritime Museum this week, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Spotlight Founded in 2009 by sibling team Will Briggs and Cass Randolph of 57 Festivals, Greenwich Comedy Festival sees thousands of visitors descend on the museum’s historic grounds to see household favourites and rising stars perform their latest material.

The festival is traditionally held in a Big Top tent, but last year became an al fresco affair in order to run safely during the pandemic. The 2021 festival is also being held outdoors, with tickets sold in multiples of two ‘to ensure a smooth transition should social distancing need to be introduced across the event’, explains the event website. With the Queen’s House providing a regal backdrop for the occasion, audiences can expect a picturesque affair – and with any luck, stars will be twinkling up above in a clear night sky as well as on the stage.

Each performance is essentially four big-name comedy gigs in one, and with no dud sets, your only conundrum will be deciding which sets to book. Kicking things off on Wednesday night is deadpan devil Milton Jones, supported by Phil Wang, Sarah Jeyworth, Ray Badran and lockdown comedy saviour Kiri Pritchard-McLean.

Then on Thursday, it’s over to The Mash Report host Nish Kumar, who leads a versatile line-up including Joel Dommett, Janine Harouni, Ivo Graham and Ed Gamble. The Off Menu podcast host then returns on Friday, a night led by Irish comedian and Live at the Apollo star David O’Doherty, supported by Edinburgh

Comedy Award-winner Tim Key and Taskmaster champion Lou Sanders.

Saturday welcomes a triple whammy of shows. First up, at 1pm, Mock the Week star Ed Byrne leads a wickedly funny line-up of Reginald D Hunter, Shappi Khorsandi and Stephen K Amos.

The live laughs continue at 4:15pm, when Nish Kumar returns, this time supported by Feel Good creator and star Mae Martin, Tadiwa Mahlunge, Catherine Bohart and Fin Taylor.

the experience with a pint from local brewery Meantime or a bottle of vino from a versatile range supplied by Jacob’s Creek. Whisky brand Naked Malt is serving up a range of different sours and Edinburgh Gin is offering summery spins on gin and tonics.

Food wise, look forward to flavours from around the world as local traders dish up everything from chilli cheese hot dogs to loaded waffles, Lebanese, Caribbean bao and African burritos (yes, really). Those in need

of an energy dose can get a quality cuppa from Sir Isaacs Artisan Coffee, while Ravenous Fudge will be sating those sugar cravings.

Festival co-founder Cass Randolph says: “Everything started for us in Greenwich. We launched this festival 13 years ago and have since branched out to other locations across the UK, but Greenwich will always be our home.”

So, Greenwich, it’s time to let the belly laughs roll.

Squeezing the final laughs out of the 2021 festival, at 7:45pm, is a winning set led by presenter and comedy royalty Dara Ó Briain, who is being joined by Seann Walsh, Rhys James and Mock the Week star Zoe Lyons.

History

Ford Madox Brown and Ravensbourne Wharf

Mary Mills We have now got up the Greenwich side of the Creek as far as Deptford Bridge. There is a very large area before we get to the Bridge itself though – this is historically called Albion and Ravensbourne wharves. It is the area now very largely taken up by Lewisham College and the Skill Centre. It had previously been corn mills owned by Robinsons. I thought I should leave the Robinson Mill complex until I write about the Lewisham side of the Creek –it was quite a complex area based on an old tide mill site and with many buildings on going down the Creek as well as those at Deptford Bridge. Anyway I have written about several corn mills over the past few weeks, including details on Mumford’s last week and I think we have all heard enough about them for a while.

Before Robinsons took over the site it was used by a building supplies and timber merchant’s business run by the Trenchard family – and I wrote a bit about them earlier. There were two wharves, Albion and Ravensbourne.

This is complicated even more because there was another Ravensbourne Wharf further down the Creek, sometimes called Lower Ravensbourne Wharf, which I have written about many weeks ago. It’s guess work that I pick the right Ravensbourne Wharf but hope to get it right.

There appear to have been mills at Deptford Bridge on the site of these two wharves from at least the 18th century, but who owned them and managed them is often

not clear. There is said to have been a windmill here as well as the more obvious watermills. There is a mention of a windmill at Deptford Bridge as early as 1622 and that it was still there until the 1840s. I must admit to being a bit confused by this – the very authoritative Bert Reynolds (of Watermill Hoppers Facebook page) says that there was a windmill – and produces evidence of it – a little way back down the Creek on the site of a tannery which I have missed in these articles - and ought to backtrack and do it!. It is now part of the Merryweather site. There was also a mill at Tanner’s Hill which isn’t too far away.

So – perhaps someone will enlighten me as to what there was at Deptford Bridge.

Whatever - this north side of Deptford

Bridge has been associated with mills and wharves for a long long time.

One of the strange things is that Ravensbourne Wharf seems to have been owned by Ford Madox Brown. Many people will know who he was – but for those of you who don’t – Ford Madox Brown was a painter in the Pre-Raphaelite movement.

These were a group of young artists trying to get back to the principles of late medieval Italian art – they are very much associated with paintings of ‘stunners’ – unreasonably tall young women in pictures with subject matter frequently connected with King Arthur. (I actually quite like them). Madox Brown was however concerned with issues around social justice and his most famous paintings ‘the Last of England’ and ‘Work’ (digging up Hampstead) reflect this. Doubtless the rents from the wharf helped subsidise this work.

Ford Madox Brown seems to have inherited the wharf from his mother, Caroline, and her connections with the Madox family who lived in Greenwich and appear to have been timber merchants in the 17th and 18th centuries. Erasmus Madox in the early 18th century had owned several wharves including Deptford Wharf.

Clearly there have been wharves on the site of Ravensbourne Wharf for centuries but for the nineteenth century there is some information. Most of this seems to be sales advertisements in the local

History away as Coldbath Street and including Albion Street and the Ravensbourne Arms Tavern. Albion Street now seems to be called Russet Way but the Ravensbourne Arms still stands, albeit no longer a pub, on the corner with Coldbath Street.

press and this alone must say something about the wharf and its location. In 1837 an advertisement appeared for the sale of a ‘twenty horse power condenser and high pressure steam engine by Wolf and Edwards’. Included with this were five coke ovens, ‘loose safety valves’ and a great deal more. There was also a ‘capital and substantial engine house’ of the ‘best stock bricks’ with skylights and gutters and other things which no purchaser could do without. There is no indication as to who is selling it, or why. I assume that ‘Wolf and Edwards’ is the partnership between Woolf and Edwards in Lambeth which had ended twelve years earlier in 1822 – and not the partnership between Wolf of Magdeburg and Edwards, Jnr. Whatever, someone had been using this equipment for some time and some purpose. A year later there is another advertisement for the sale of the eighth part of the wharf – I assume this is an ‘investment opportunity’ rather than an operator for the wharf who is wanted. No mention of the steam engine but it includes a coal shed, stables and counting houses. It ‘commands ... the high roads to Greenwich, Lewisham,

Dartford and other cities and boroughs’.

The main point of interest is that it is being sold by ‘S.Teulon’ – it is not clear if he is the owner or an agent of some sort.

Samuel Teulon was one of the Greenwich ex-Huguenot community and was very busy in public affairs on an agency basis throughout this period – for example he collected money for the local gas company.

His famous son was the quirky but much listed architect S.S.Teulon. I am told by a local researcher on the family that he had been bankrupt in 1832. It seems unlikely that he operated the wharf himself.

Ravensbourne Wharf was for sale again in 1873. By this time there is a draw dock, a manager’s house stabling for twelve horses, a pottery, a firebrick warehouse and much more. It had been used for the ‘wharfage of coal, stone, cement, brick’. The sale is for the other five eighths of the freehold for ’10 ½ years at an almost nominal rent’.

Along with it were many other buildings in the sale, clearly part of an extensive estate- shops and houses in Deptford bridge and in Blackheath Hill, and as far

In 1877 Chobham, Surrey, gas works was for sale ‘also the lease and goodwill of a genuine coal and coke business.

Ravensbourne Wharf in Greenwich’. (note the word ‘genuine’ – may I ask what a ‘fake’ coal wharf would be?). Also thrown into the sale are ‘Two valuable patents as yet undeveloped …. for the manufacture of improved railway sleepers and for safety valves for steam boilers’.

The next we know Ravensbourne Wharf is being operated by the Trenchard family whom I mentioned some weeks ago and – builders merchants, timber merchants, and local councillors - whom we will hear more of in due course. They also operated Ravensbourne’s neighbour, Albion Wharf.

Deptford Bridge’. This was an asphalt works belonging to the Val de Travers Asphalted Paving Company with ‘eleven open cauldrons’. Val de Travers is the quite well-known name of a road making company but it is also a place, a source of natural asphalt in Switzerland. The court case does mention this and asks why this smelly activity is taking place in Deptford and not in Switzerland. I only mention this because as part of my research for my PhD I investigated sales of cheap gas works tar – would you believe that a sizeable proportion went to numerous east end based road making firms, all of them named after Swiss sources of natural asphalt?

This is an in-depth itinerary along the Greenwich riverside from the Lewisham border to the Charlton border. This is not a book about the areas the tourists visit - but about what was, and is many ways still is, an industrial and residential riverside with a strong relationship to river based work and activity. It looks at how the area developed because of river use, but also how the proximity of the Royal Court, and closeness of the City of London influenced the nature of much activity. It is also a story of some superlatives - the first this, the biggest that, and how the world changed because of what went on here.

A shorter court case concerned Thomas Harbour, age 20, who worked at Albion Wharf. He punched his employer, Edward Trenchard, ‘in the eye and another in the mouth’. Reason not really given except he had asked for money.

He got 20 shillings or 14 days.

Greenwich Riverside. Upper Watergate to Angerstein

Throughout the earlier nineteenth century there are various advertisements from a Benjamin Smith, who says he is operator of Albion Wharf. They are however all for shops and houses adjacent to the wharf rather than the wharf itself, or the activities on it – that to me says ‘property developer’ rather than ‘wharf operators’. The advertisement stresses the ‘healthy and pleasant aspect’ and mention that there is a ‘good drainage’.

(Now, why do they say that?).

2021 PRESENTS

Albion Wharf was soon being operated by the Trenchards. A long court case of 1900 details a delivery of sand there which was said to be important in legal terms as to how the amount of sand in a barge was to be measured. It was however triggered by a ‘slovenly manner’ and suspicion about the motives of various of the individuals concerned.

Charlton Athletic's latest youth goalkeeper signing

Harrison Wickers is the latest signing for Charlton Athletic’s U10 Academy team

“We have noticed Harrison growing in confidence and ability since he has been playing with Charlton” Nine-year-old Harrison Wickers has become the latest addition to Charlton Athletic’s Academy U10 team after progressing through Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT’s) Advanced Centre programme.

CACT’s Advanced Centre is a specialised Charlton Athletic Academy-designed curriculum focusing on technical abilities among players aged from the U5-U13 age groups.

Harrison was originally spotted playing in goal with his grassroots team and invited to attend a Talent ID event at CACT’s Advanced Centre.

Warren Wickers, Harrison’s father said: “Harrison really enjoyed the event and was excited to be invited back to the Advanced Centre to train.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 then took its grip on the world, training was put on hold, and he never got the chance to go back that year.”

Once lockdown restrictions were lifted, Harrison was invited back to participate in a festival arranged by the Advanced Centre and to fill in for one of the Academy teams. Following this, Harrison was given the opportunity to trial with the Academy U9s.

Harrison’s father, said: “Harrison settled in really quickly with such a friendly group of talented boys and got to take part in matches against Brighton, Arsenal and Chelsea.”

Harrison has since been offered a place on the U10 Academy team and is looking forward to starting the new season with his teammates.

Development Course starts on Friday 10 September and is a great opportunity for young goalkeepers aged between 6-12.
