Spot the sculptures on the King William Lawns The King William Lawns at the Old Royal Naval College have been lined with the sculptures of artist Josie Spencer. The Snail and the Whale comes to Greenwich Theatre Tall Stories is a leader in the field of adapting popular stories for the stage. Founded in 1997 by joint artistic directors Olivia Jacobs and Toby Mitchell, the theatre company is best-known for its intelligent dramatisations of children’s books that appeal to audiences of all ages, among them productions of The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom – both regular fixtures in the West End. To bring its Suitable for ages four and up, the play tells the heart-warming tale of an adventurous young girl and her seafaring father who conjure a story about a sea snail taking a trip around the world. To help speed her on her way, the little snail befriends a giant humpback whale, who offers to give her a lift on his tail. Using live music, vivid storytelling, plenty of props and even more laughs, Tall Stories has spent the last 10 years bringing to life the beloved picture book for new audiences.

We spoke to co-artistic director of Tall Stories Toby Mitchell to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Firstly, can you tell us a little bit about the history of Tall Stories as a company?

Toby Mitchell: Our purpose for many years has been to bring great stories to life for audiences of all ages. Olivia Jacobs and I co-founded the company in 1997 to take two shows based on books we loved to the Edinburgh Fringe – one was adapted from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and the other from Oscar Wilde’s short stories.

The shows weren’t aimed at family audiences but some parents brought their kids and said how great it was to find shows which didn’t talk down to children. That’s been our aim with our family shows ever since! And although we’re best known for our adaptations of picture books, we do shows for older children and grown-ups too.

who help us to make each new show as good as it can be. We also hope that people who come and see our picture book adaptations might return and see one of our lesser-known shows too.

HOM: Describe The Snail and the Whale in three words...

TM: “Imaginative, funny and touching.”

Or “faultless family fare”, as the WhatsOnStage review put it!

HOM: The production is nearly 10 years old now. Has it changed much over the years?

HOM: Tall Stories is a leader in adapting children’s books for the stage. Does that reputation come with a certain degree of pressure?

TM: The show evolves with each new cast. Over the years, we’ve changed lines, added lines, changed moves and added pieces of set, but it’s kept the same basic structure and feel, with the audience seeing the story through the eyes of an adventurous young girl and her seafaring dad.

TM: It comes with huge pressure. As the saying goes, ‘You’re only as good as your last show!’. But we have a really talented pool of collaborators including designers, composers and performers

HOM: The incorporation of live folk music in the show is an engaging touch. What made you pursue the route of live music and why this genre?

TM: It was actually author Julia Donaldson’s idea! When we asked her back in 2011 if we could adapt her book for the stage (having adapted three of her books already), she suggested that for a change we have live instead of recorded music. I then thought back to the first professional production I had worked on as an assistant director.

It was set in a lighthouse and all the music and sound effects (including storms and seagulls) were created by a viola player with a delay pedal.

I tracked down the composer of that show, Richard Heacock, and invited him to work on this new show.

HOM: How has the last year been for you as a company? And is this current tour your first time back on stage in some time?

TM: It’s been sad and frustrating for us, as it has for everyone. We had loads of ideas for projects that were never able to happen, along with some that did. Our long-running production of The Gruffalo was actually our first show back on stage this year, with some outdoor drive-in

performances, and The Snail and the Whale followed closely behind. It is just great to be back in theatres.

HOM: Were you able to engage with young audiences online during the lockdowns?

TM: We did livestreams of The Snail and the Whale in October and of The Gruffalo in December, both of which went well and had lovely reactions from audiences. Then from January to March this year we commissioned company members to tell some short stories online. Again, we got some great feedback. But there’s nothing like live storytelling in a venue!

HOM: What do you hope audiences take away from seeing the show?

TM: A great story, well told!

I hope audiences will leave having had fun and having really enjoyed the live experience.

HOM: Lastly, do you have any future book-to-stage adaptations in the pipeline which you can tell us about?

HOM: How important is it for children to have access to live theatre, especially in our current times?

TM: Our next show is a return to Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, having not adapted a show by them since The Snail and the Whale 10 years ago. We’re premiering The Smeds and the Smoos at the Rose Theatre in Kingston in October this year, followed by a national tour. It’s a brilliant story – think Romeo and Juliet with aliens and a happy ending!

TM: Children should have access to all sorts of live experiences – music, theatre, galleries, museums, parks, crazy golf – the more we show them exciting alternatives to ever-present and tempting screens and devices, the better.

“The Youth Collective is an annual youth project that recruits young people from Greenwich to coproduce an evening late at the museum. The young people are paid to produce this event and seek to represent the diversity of Greenwich,” explains Nicole Morris, Youth Projects Producer for RMG. The Youth Collective takeover looks different every year. In 2018, the group organised a carnivalthemed party at the Queen’s House in celebration of its diversity and hidden past. The Late event featured live performances in music and poetry as well as underground DJ-sets and competitions.

In 2019, the group took over the National Maritime Museum to host the Moon Festival’s closing party – a night of moon-themed science, fantasy, storytelling and fashion.

Youth Collective even managed to stage a takeover in 2020, an online affair that saw the group reimagine a museum where all voices are heard and untold narratives accounted for.

The 2021 Youth Collective, nicknamed Cutty Crew, are producing a takeover of Cutty Sark on July 16. “The evening event will seek to provide a platform for new voices and talent for young people by

young people,” says Nicole. “Join us for a lively evening of music, performance, art, film and food.”

As usual, the programme was opened up to young people aged 16-24 living, working or studying in the borough of Greenwich. “The young people work as a collective across eight sessions to co-produce the event based on meeting lots of museum staff, and thinking about how they want to respond and react to this year’s venue,” explains Nicole. “The project is as much about thinking and working collectively as it is about creative production.”

At the time of writing, the line-up for the night remains under wraps.

“We anticipate a festival style line up with performances throughout the night on stage on the Dry Berth in front of the figureheads,” Nicole hints. “We also plan to take over the Upper Deck and spill out of the boat into the public domain. Expect group and solo performances from a range of acts across the boat.”

At the crux of the project is a desire to give a platform to young voices, and put their ideas, aspirations and hopes centrestage.

“We hope the event celebrates and empowers those involved whilst also offering important

transferable skills,” says Nicola.

If watching the 2021 Youth Collective leaves you and yours inspired to get involved with similar events, RMG is hosting a further four programmes for young people over the coming weeks.

“Next up is our Rethink Summer Residency for Young Creatives in Greenwich. We are currently recruiting young people aged 15-18 from Greenwich for this fantastic opportunity… Over the week we will be working alongside a creative facilitator to create a new set of questions for future visitors, rethinking and reimagining the museum. There will also be a visual semi-permanent showcase to celebrate the group’s ideas and vision,” reveals Nicola.

“From September, we will also recommence our weekly Saturday Art Club for young people aged 13-16 from the borough of Greenwich, so now is a good time to sign up too!”

Water softeners, tin theft and bulletproof horse feed

They articles I’ve been doing recently are about the industries which were on the Greenwich bank of Deptford Creek - I’ve been working south down from the River to Lewisham. So far I’ve done all the wharves from the River to Creek Road and then most of the ones between Creek Road and the railway bridge. But I didn’t look at all Creekside wharves which are on Norman Road but front onto the Creek. There’s a whole ragbag of them and some of them changed name as different operators used them. I’m not going to do all of them but hopefully just pick out some interesting bits.

Today, if we walk down Norman Road from Creek Road as far as the railway bridge we pass some industry at Brewery Wharf and then we are in a canyon with new identikit flats on either side of the road, just like everywhere else. Then there is some industry – a container park and a trading estate - before we get to the railway. There is also a big site with work on it for the Tideway Tunnel (of which more in the future). On Google Streetview you can look at views of Norman Road all the way back to 2008 in stages and by using it you can see how much the area has changed over the past 17 years.

On the 1844 Tithe Map of the area there is no road running down from Creek Road to the railway bridge.

Presumably you had to struggle through the mud to get to the wharves – or go by boat. By the 1850 map there is ‘Ravensbourne Street’ which is on the line of Norman Road but only goes as far as the corner of Claremont Street – which is still there. There are houses on both sides of Ravensbourne Street and also entrances to some wharves – Ravensbourne Wharf, Collier Wharf and New Sun Wharf and others. On the 1895 map it is all changed – Norman Road is there and goes all the way down to Greenwich High Road, as it does now. Norman Road was named after the local landowner, a lawyer called John Manship Norman –and, personally, I think Ravensbourne Street is a much nicer name. The rows of houses on both sides of the road were still there in the 1950s – but by the 1960s they were gone and I assume they were ‘slum cleared’.

The first wharf on the Creekside of Norman Road walking down from Creek Road is Brewery Wharf and I wrote about that a couple of weeks ago. You can’t miss it because it is still a working wharf with cranes and dust and activity. Next after that is a building which says it is a theatre.

The only wharf which has the same name consistently throughout the past couple of centuries is where the theatre is. Ravensbourne Wharf. Like all the others in the past it dealt with coal. This was part of the vast amount of coal coming into the Ares on ships from the north of England – load after load after load. At Ravensbourne Wharf in the 19th century it was H.Adams, coal and coke merchant who offered “Coals! Coals! Coals!” and added that ‘Telephonic Communication was established.

Over the years there were other occupants on Ravensbourne Wharf– In 1853 there was an H.J. Gillard with a works in Gothenburg who sold ‘patent machine-made laths’ and had ‘experienced workmen’. Another firm, Ritchie and Smith, stocked tiles – ‘Best Bangor and Port Madoc Slates’ along with chimney pots, fire lumps, and ‘Robin Hood’. (I have no idea what that is either). His workmen ‘craned, loaded and warehoused ….goods of every description’.

It has been pointed out to me that the late 19th century maps show two large tanks on Ravensbourne Wharf and it is suggested they are gas holders. I doubt that, but I don’t know – and I would welcome information or ideas about them.

Now on Ravensbourne Wharf is this little theatre which is part of a fairly complicated organisation with a bar and arts centre and lots of what we could call ‘facilities management’ companies. by Headley’s Oil Mills – also called ‘Headley Steam Mills’. They were a lot more up market than the coal wharves – their directors are listed in the Directories of Directors and the also had a Royal Warrant – for the supply of ‘genuine linseed cakes, cotton cakes and rapeseed cakes’ to Her Majesty the Queen.. Their wharf had a frontage of 1000 feet to the Creek with an, engine, boiler, cranes and other machinery.’

Headley’s were initially owned by the Goode brothers, who made Goode's Desiccated Food for Horses – ‘valuable, nutritious and portable.

I shudder to think what was in it.

There seems to be a suggestion that it would be useful if you wanted to build a fortification. They describe how at Aldershot (I presume that’s the army centre) an experiment was made with the horse feed to ‘ascertain its resisting power against rifle bullets … after 300 rounds at a few bales it was found that a bullet would occasionally penetrate a bale... But had not sufficient energy

to enter a second bale’. Thus a beleaguered army unit about to be attacked but with their defences broken might shift out the horse food to fill the breaches, see the attack off and live to see another day.

Hope the horses enjoyed eating it.

Later an advertisement for Headleys mentions fish meal and fertiliser.

And later still there is a report of a theft of tin belonging to the Ministry of Supply and which would have needed several lorry loads to remove – and would fetch much more than £1000 on the black market.

Further down was Lion Wharf where Fry Brothers had a hire and haulage business. They had a considerable fleet of spritsail sailing barges 'The Portage’; ‘Thomas and Arthur’, ‘Winnipeg’. ‘Assiniboine’, ‘Minnedosa’, ‘Neepawa’, ‘Our Girls’ – all apparently built for them and owned by Edmund Fry with an address in the relatively unpretentious Langdale Road, off Greenwich High Road.

In 1913 Fry’s could deal with heavy

road vehicles saying “their works are adequately equipped to carry out all kinds of wheel repairs, tire renewing, pressing-up, etc., to any make of motor wagon.. should the repairs be of a protracted nature, Messrs. Fry. Bros. will... substitute a complete back-axle set... at a nominal charge”.

The sort of vehicles they dealt with was revealed by a summons for the breach of bye-laws at West Ham. Their driver had passed through West Ham without a licence to do so in a locomotive engine. They explained the engine had been hired by the local Council in Woodford and it was its way to its next hirer which was Enfield Council. They were fined because they should have had a London County Council 30/- (30 shillings – about £1.50) temporary licence. So I assume the vehicle was some sort of heavy road roller.

The roads we live on today were built by the likes of the Fry Brothers --- there are reports of their supply of granite to Deptford Borough Council... another 500 tons of granite for Grove Park Workhouse...

of refusal of their tender for construction of Bram shot Avenue in Charlton... of building a siding at Brimsdown station... supplying Kentish brown pit flints for Sunbury on Thames Council - and so on and so on - and many many more. They also used horses – they advertised to say they wanted a 'smart youth who was an early riser' to drive a horse and trap and also frequently advertised horses for sale, or wanted.

In the 1930s Fry’s appear to have developed and made the EffBee water softener. A great many of these were sold but ‘to the trade only’ means that most advertisements for the softener are from local shops and agencies rather than from Fry’s themselves.

It was advertised as being ‘made in Kent’ - which I suppose includes Greenwich. I would like to know more about these softeners – it was a technology being developed in this period but what exactly they used as the softening agent isn’t clear.

Also developing a water softener seems to be a long way from the sort of heavy haulage that Fry’s

had previously been involved in.

Another wharf – Norman wharf – was acquired in 1903 as a Council depot to serve West Greenwich.

As we near the railway bridge there are some wharves still in use. The Brooksmarsh Trading estate is still with us. Nearest to the railway is a wharf in use in conjunction with the Tideway Tunnel project and barges can still be seen coming and going as they once did from every wharf.

There is a platform built out into the creek and work ongoing there.

Wharf by wharf has however fallen to the developers. Some – Hilton’s for instance – are on a second phase of development. Soon there will be nothing but flats. I am aware that campaigners are trying to open up the Creek frontage with a footpath to provide some measure of amenity in the area, but what was once a working waterway is now something only to look at from the windows of your apartment.

Malachi makes his mark

8-year-old Malachi Ige is the latest young person from a Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) programme to progress into Charlton Athletic’s Academy.

Malachi was scouted by Charlton Athletic Academy Coach Anthony McCluskey in 2018, and was instantly referred to CACT’s Advanced Centre programme. Malachi improved considerably in the U6s and at the end of the year was invited into Charlton Athletic’s pre-academy elite group’s new U7 cohort.

Having succeeded and continued to develop and impress Charlton Athletic coaches, Malachi received an offer to join the U9s.

David Ige, Malachi’s dad, said: “Malachi’s development has enticed other top clubs but we decided to settle with Charlton because of the satisfying pathway culture. We feel Malachi is in the right place

to develop not just as a young footballer but also as a kid.”
