Last calls for Return to Slygo Celebrated menswear designer Nicholas Daley is behind an immersive exhibition currently showing at NOW Gallery, Return to Slygo. The designer was selected by the gallery for its prestigious 2021 Fashion Commission.

The resulting fully-immersive exhibition is a celebration of Nicholas’s multicultural Jamaican-Scottish roots, explored through his three core values: community, culture and craftsmanship.

Opera in the grounds of Trinity Laban Immerse yourself in visceral sounds of opera this Thursday as Trinity Laban’s postgraduate vocal students perform Rosina’s Lovers: operatic excerpts from several of the world’s most influential compositions. Among them: John Corigliano’s ‘The Ghosts of Versaille’, Massenet’s ‘Chérubin’, Milhaud’s ‘La mère coupable’, Rossini’s ‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia’ and Mozart’s ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’.

A Caryl Churchill quadruple bill at Greenwich Theatre Greenwich Theatre boss James Haddrell directs a quadruple bill of Caryl Churchill’s rarely staged works, under the umbrella title Bad Days and Odd Nights.

Starring actor Paul McGann, of Withnail and I, Doctor Who and Luther fame, the line-up features Churchill’s short play Abortive (1971) – celebrating 50 years since it was first broadcast on BBC Radio 3 – as well as rarely staged revivals of one-act plays Seagulls (1978) and Three More Sleepless Nights (1980). A last-minute addition sees Churchill’s 1971 radio drama Not Not Not Not Not Enough Oxygen added to the bill.

Q&A with emerging theatre company Clown Funeral Clown Funeral’s latest play has a thrilling premise: two strangers have a fight in an office car park, then they go for dinner. Pitched as ‘a funny, twisted story about two people pushing each other’, A Pattern of Bad Behaviour is, in part, about throwing caution to the wind and choosing a different path to the one laid out for you. The West Midlands-based company, who met at university, are performing the show at Greenwich Theatre this Sunday. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Clown Funeral member Freddie Paul to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Tell us a bit about the backstory of Clown Funeral. Who’s in the company and what do each of you do?

Freddie Paul: Clown Funeral began as a group of friends at uni.

There are six core members: our director, Sam George, our tech lead, Christina Owen, Alex Webster, who handles dramaturgy, set and props.

There’s Ella Tebay, who is lead writer and editor, Sam Thorogood, who is an actor and a fantastic digital designer/marketer, and myself, an actor and social media lead.HOM: What’s your mission as an emerging theatre company?

FP: We always say we explore human corners of inhuman worlds.

connect us though weird storylines and unnaturalistic staging. We want to connect people in surprising ways. We all pitch in when needs be and we all like to have a hand in the writing process, but as time has gone on our roles have become more clearly defined.

some say it had something to do with the fact that we were interested in clowning early on.

Honestly, no one really knows.

HOM: Clown Funeral is a brilliant name for a company.

How did you choose it?

FP: A Pattern of Bad Behaviour is about adulting, but not; it’s an existential exploration, but not; and at its heart it’s a love story, but not.

Many people can relate to feeling unfulfilled and frustrated with their lot in life. The play is about taking control of your direction in life and finding out, for better or worse, what excites you. More than that, it’s about accepting your agency and the repercussions of your decisions.

At the end of the day, you can’t live life for anyone else but yourself.

FP: We wanted a name for our group as we kept making work together and it just made sense at the time.

The name origin story is highly contested and each of us seems to have a different memory of how it came into being: some say we picked random words out of a hat, some say we chose it to reflect our passion for dark comedies,

HOM: How would you describe your latest show, A Pattern of Bad Behaviour?

THEATRE HOM: What inspired you to create a play around this topic?

FP: All of Clown Funeral’s members are in their mid-twenties and all of us have experienced, at one point or another, the feeling that the grass is greener on the other side. What if I had chosen to do something else? ‘What if I did throw caution to the wind and just did something crazy?’ The pressure of choosing a path in life and sticking to it is something a lot of people feel, especially in the first decade or so of trying to be an adult.

HOM: Have you performed the show elsewhere before?

For care homes

FP: We are so excited! This tour has been a long time coming and we’re so proud of this play and how it has developed. We have a new actor, Sam Whiteman, playing opposite Freddie Paul, and the online rehearsals have shown such amazing results. We all know that the final product is going to be the best thing we’ve created to date.

HOM: So what’s at the crux of A Pattern of Bad Behaviour?

How should we respond to it?

FP: We premiered the play at London’s Vault Festival and performed it at Worcester University. We had to cut short our 2020 tour of the show due to the pandemic. Our performance at Greenwich Theatre will be the first of our remounted 2021 tour.

FP: If nothing else, we want our audiences to feel seen and to know that they are not alone in experiencing the difficulty of navigating life and its many, many decisions. Feeling isolated is a common experience, even more so after the year and a half that the world has been through.

HOM: How have previous audiences responded to it?

No matter how alone we feel, there is community in that experience.

FP: Audiences responded really well to our unique staging, which is set up to look like a boxing ring. They loved the fast-paced dialogue and the awkwardness of the relationship between the two characters. We’ve done some more research and development since its last showing, so we can’t wait to hear how audiences feel now we’re finally going forward.

Cece’s Speakeasy: the future of cocoa explored through music and poetry

“Coffee and chocolate are such common items in our lives we take them for granted. But what if one day they were gone? How would we explain the taste and the joy they both brought us to our children's children?,” ponders Zena Edwards, Artistic Director of Cece’s Speakeasy, the latest show by south-east London based spoken word group Apples and Snakes, which is showing at the Albany in Deptford this week, writes Holly O’Mahony…

An immersive poetic experience, Cece’s Speakeasy haul’s its audience into the year 2031, a time when global temperatures have risen, the quality and quantity of crops have decreased, and soon, caffeine and chocolate are to become extinct. In an underground hub for truth-seekers, chocolate lovers and coffee drinkers, a night of storytelling, poetry and music is about to unfold with an underlying theme at its core: the climate crisis.

“When we heard about coffee and cocoa crops being affected if the climate rises by two degrees, and that by 2050 they could disappear, this felt like something really tangible for people to get behind,” says Lisa Lead, CEO and artistic director of Apples and Snakes.

You read that right: chocolate will be tasted during the performance. “Audiences can expect a sensory experience [in the form of] the aromas of coffee and chocolate,” affirms Zena, who hopes audience members walk away with a sense of optimism, ideas for small and random acts of kindness, and a connection to their inner resilience. “There will be words and storytelling to inspire and ignite new ways of thinking about connection to each other after such a long period of isolation during lockdown.”

“The climate emergency can be overwhelming so by looking at it through the idea that our morning coffee and chocolate treats might disappear, we make it more human,” she adds. Cece’s is about people and rediscovering our connection to the planet. Whilst it

Bride’s big day just got even better but we still need to do things safely The limit on the number of people at weddings and wakes has been lifted ... but we need to remember the rules on hands, face, space and fresh air. We look at the new etiquette for wedding organisers and their guests and how to commemorate the life of a loved one at funerals or wakes.

FORGET WEDDING etiquette bible Debrett’s – for now! Friends and family can once again be at the centre of our celebrations but new rules are in place to ensure our safety.

In England, you can have as many guests as you like as long as the number complies with the venue’s socially-distanced capacity and that guests remember the hands, face, space, and fresh air message is still important.

Staff and guests are asked to wear masks except when eating and drinking. It is also best to get tested twice a week before and after the event.

Venues will have to carry out a COVID-19 risk assessment. In other locations, such as private gardens, the organiser must decide how many people can safely attend to allow for social distancing and complete a risk assessment.

The risk assessment is easy to access and complete and should be treated as just one more thing – including sending invitations, buying favours and booking a photographer – to tick off the to-do list.

Don’t forget to do it as failure to provide a completed risk assessment could result in a £10,000 fine.

If your ceremony

and reception are at different venues, risk assessments must be carried out for both.

Food and drink usually flow at a wedding reception and they still can ... to guests sitting at tables, indoors and out.

Go ahead and book a band or DJ who can perform socially distanced and, though singing and dancing are not advised, the newlyweds can take to the floor for the first dance.

The best man and father of the bride should prepare those embarrassing speeches, best delivered outdoors.

Alternative wedding ceremonies are permitted in line with the same rules as weddings or civil partnerships.

You can attend a stag or hen do and Hindu or Sikh Mehndi parties can go ahead with numbers for each restricted to 30 people outside and rule of six or two households inside private homes.

Wakes and funerals AN UNLIMITED number of people can legally attend funerals and the 30-person limit on wakes has been lifted in England, meaning it is now up to the individual venue to decide how many people may attend.

The venue or organiser must conduct a risk assessment to assess the number possible guests in line with social distancing.

“Cece’s talks about how we have lost connection to the Earth, and how we have a chance to rekindle it if we act now,” says Zena. “The live music, spoken word and visual aspect of this event all help to tell the story of climate and environmental justice, and the wider issue of the divide between the global south, who produce all the coffee and chocolate, and the global north who are the consumers of these products.”

On top of having an urgent story to tell, the company is grappling with returning to the stage for the first time in months – a prospect that, above anything, they’re hugely excited by.

“I know the band and the poets are really keen [to perform in front of a live audience again], says Zena. “For myself as the artistic director, it has been such a joy imagining Cece’s live and kicking,” she smiles.

The works of the Rennie brothers

Mary Mills Continuing our trip down the Greenwich site at Deptford Creek.

The site which I described last week was Brewery Wharf and that is the first site you encounter on Norman Road on its corner with Creek Road. Carrying on up the Creek towards Lewisham there are then a series of wharfs - Ravensbourne Wharf - Healeys Wharf – Collier Wharf – New Sun Wharf and so on. And I will get round to talking about them eventually.

Today if we walk down Norman Road to the railway bridge it seems to be quite a long way. Originally Norman Road was Ravensbourne Street and it ran only as far as the railway bridge. Before it was built there was no road at all, just a series of large sites some with wharves and some without. A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the ‘copperas grounds’ on the Greenwich side of the Creek and I said how they seemed to have been in the area of what was later New Sun Wharf, which was one of the last wharves before the railway bridge. Now the area on your left as you go up Norman Road is housing but in the 1840s it was just the large sites of market gardens or meadows.

But by the 1860s maps show works – marked as ‘engine’ or ‘boiler works’ next to the railway line at the end of Ravensbourne Street. I am pretty certain that this works belonged to the Rennie Brothers and I’m going to say a lot more about this at the moment.

I’ll come back to all the wharves I’ve skipped later and I will also write about the big site next door and to the rear

of the boiler works with the gasholders on it – and some older people might remember them. But I think we can make more sense of the area by starting with the Rennie Brothers’ works. But, despite the Rennies being very famous, it has been very difficult to find out anything which went on at this, their Deptford Creek Works.

The Rennie brothers were the sons of the great civil engineer John Rennie.

He was Scottish, born in the 1760s and grew up to become an engineer working at one time for James Watt.

In the 1790s he moved to London, where he set up his own engineering business and continued with a career which involved amazing numbers of important structures. He carried out large drainage works, bridges, docks and much more. He died in 1821 and is buried in St.Paul’s Cathedral. His base and his works were at Blackfriars.

He had two sons, George and John, who inherited his business and after his death they remained in partnership as G. and J. Rennie, although each

specialised in a different part of the business. They carried on using the Blackfriars works, initially in Stamford Street and later moving to Holland Street. As time went on the works continued under their children.

In the 1830s they are said to have opened a shipbuilding yard at Norman Road, Greenwich. I assume that their site is that shown on the 1860s OS Map, which lay adjacent to the north side of the Greenwich Railway and which had access to Deptford Creek.

This area may, or may not, have been part of the copperas works which seems to have gone out of use in the 1830s. In the mid 1840s the Greenwich vestry had a ‘tithe map’ drawn up in order to have something more accurate for the collection of the rates. But there is no sign whatsoever on it of the Rennie works and the site which later seems to be theirs is a collection of small holdings – described as ‘market gardens’, ‘meadow’ ‘sheds’.

The freeholder is either a local dignitary ‘Joshua Hargrave’ or John Manship Norman, a lawyer after whom Norman Road was to be named.

Some of them are let to ‘Faulkner’ and I wonder if he was an agent or some connection of the Rennies.

So far, so mysterious. The Rennie site seems to have been known as ‘Creek Yard Boiler Works’ and although it is described as a shipbuilding site the Creek here, above Creek Road Bridge, could hardly be described as ideal for building a vessel of any size. Thus in 1859 Rennie’s took over Dreadnought Wharf with Thames deep water frontage where William Joyce had

already built some substantial vessels.

There the Rennies stayed until the early 20th century and used it suitably for shipbuilding. Most of the accounts we have of the Rennie works in Greenwich are about the Dreadnought site, not that on Deptford Creek.

The next thing I am sure of about the Creekside site is that in 1864

the Phoenix Gas Company bought the adjacent site to the north which involved some discussion with Rennies on access to the Creek – which the gas company did not need and which Rennie took over. I very much suspect that in the 20th century the gas company – by then South Met., took over the rest of the Rennie site.

industry had an enamelling factory on what had been the Rennie site.

So what was going on at the Deptford site? A newspaper report of 1869 describes a strike there. This involved a government contract for ‘60 or 70 flat bottomed vessels for the shallow navigation of rivers in India’. Two hundred men downed tools thinking that this valuable contract ought to lead to more pay for them. The Rennies apparently got the Government to cancel the contract and sacked all the men.

While I suspect there was rather more to it than all that, it does give us two clues to what was done there.

‘Flat bottomed vessels’ could mean anything from punts upwards – but probably means something like a lighter. ‘Two hundred men’ though does seem rather a lot of men. I appreciate that 20th century boat builders had power tools but Joe Jakubait built 90 ft New Orleans in 1991 in Greenwich with a staff of 20.

The Rennie’s Greenwich engine and boiler shop was closed apparently in 1887. Subsequently in 1895, eight years after the works is supposed to have closed, two advertisements appeared in the local press for its sale. One advertisement describes a plot of freehold building land ‘near the station and park’… ‘a freehold wharf and dock on with a water frontage Deptford creek’ and which had been run as a boiler works. It was for sale by auction but whether this sale ever took place I do not know.

The other advertisement is for a different auction sale of the tools on the premises - boilermakers’ tools, some of which are described as ‘nearly new’.

It is difficult to know what happened to the site after the boiler works closed. On maps the site appears to be empty in the late 19th and early20th centuries. By the 1950s had become part of the large Roan Sreet gas site and the site of gas industry owned factories. It later became housing.

This site is really intriguing. In some ways it is famous in that the many biographies of John Rennie usually mention it. Although one biography on my bookshelf says it was in Woolwich!

Most of them don’t really take on that there were actually two works owned by the Rennies in Greenwich and assume that the ships and docks were

all made on Deptford Creek site - while in fact they were made up the road at Dreadnought Wharf. They also all assume that engines and boilers were

all made at the Blackfriars works.

The site was famous, yet, I fact, unknown.

Over £20,000 raised to support food for children and young people over the summer holidays

Ardmore, a family-owned construction group, and their partners and staff have donated £10,000 towards food for children and young people on free school meals.

Their donation to the Champions for Children in aid of Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT’s) summer holiday camps will be matched by the Childhood Trust and a generous supporter of CACT, bringing the total raised in just over a week to £20,970.

The funds will help provide meals for children eligible for free school meals over the summer holidays.

Those eligible will be offered breakfast and a cooked lunch while taking part in a range of fun, active, educational activities.

1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out repair works on dropped sewer pipes.

2. The Order will come into operation on 19th July 2021 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However, the works are expected to take 1 month. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading), in Waterside Close from outside 101 to 109 4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Waterside Close. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
