The queen behind the portrait Back in early 2020, just before Covid hit and everything changed, the Queen’s House opened an exhibition, Faces of a Queen, which saw the three surviving versions of the Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I go on show together for the first time in their 430-year history. The portraits commemorate the most famous conflict in Elizabeth I’s reign: the failed attempt by the Spanish Armada to invade England in 1588.

The Queen’s House has reopened and the portraits are still on show together for a limited time this summer. Study their subtle differences while you can.

A family classic gets the big screen treatment My Neighbour Totoro is a much-loved classic of the Studio Ghibli canon. The Japanese animation follows two young girls, Satsuki and Mei, who enter a mystical forest near their home, which is inhabited by fantastical creatures called Totoros.

They befriend O-Totoro, king of the forest, who takes them on a magical adventure while their mother lies sick in hospital, helping them to understand the realities of life.

But here to talk us through these ‘solar storms’ and how they affect planet Earth is Chris Scott, Professor of Space & Atmospheric Physics at the University of Reading, who is giving a lecture at the Royal Observatory titled ‘Storms from the Sun’. In it, he’ll explain how scientists are using images from spacecrafts combined with complicated computer models to accurately forecast the arrival of these solar storms.

Up at the O2 review: a steep climb to the top of the city How did you spend the first actually warm and sunny day of 2021? For those who have forgotten, the date in question was Thursday 27 May. It was probably the first time you went out without a coat, nay a jumper, even, and you may have scrambled to swap your first indoor restaurant reservation in five months for a table al fresco. Me? I took the opportunity to climb to the summit of the O2 and admire the sunset from there, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Ever since moving to London seven years ago, I’d been vaguely aware that scaling the roof of the O2 arena as part of a guided tour was a thing people could do. It sounded kind of cool; ticking the boxes of ‘scenic view’ and ‘thrilling experience’ in one.

But due to the seemingly permanent nature of the O2 arena – the largest music venue in London that’s hosted the likes of Beyoncé, The Spice Girls and The Rolling Stones in the past - I was in no rush to climb it.

I’d assumed no one else was sneaking in a quick schlep over the dome-shaped structure either, until I booked a ticket and started casually mentioning to friends that I was going. It turned out everyone

I knew, their mum and gran had climbed before me. “You’ll love it, the view’s amazing!” said one. “Pack a hair tie and wear comfy trousers,” cautioned another. Despite writing about ‘things to do in London’ for a living, I seemed to be the only person in the city not to have stood on the peak of its foremost concert hall.

Up at the O2 launched back in 2012, marking the fifth anniversary of the venue (it’s previous life as the short-lived Millennium Dome firmly buried). Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, the original architects of the venue, the 90-minute experience takes small groups of up to 30 visitors on a hike up a 190-metre tensile fabric walkway

to an observation platform on the summit. Here, 360˚ views of London can be enjoyed, with landmarks including The Shard and the Olympic Park on show. After, a steep descent down the other side is sweetened by birds-eye views of a relatively rural segment of the Thames.

Climbs run from 10am until 6:15pm, with special Thursday Lates available in the summer season (at the time of writing, these sessions are available until June 17, but may well be extended). The latter come with the added charm of being serenaded by an acoustic live performance at the summit and the chance to add on a glass of fizz or a mocktail to your experience.

We booked the Thursday Late (a bid to get the most bang for our buck) and joined a small army – largely consisting of young couples, but a few parents and teenage children joined the group too – filling out forms at ‘Base Camp’.

Once a safety video had clued us up on the risks (of which there are very few in this slick operation) and with our belongings stashed away (only phones tucked away in sealed pockets can accompany you on your climb) George, our guide for the night, whizzed us through the ins and outs of donning and securing our safety

harnesses and climbing shoes, with the care and enthusiasm of someone who hadn’t delivered the same speech hundreds of times before.

It’s worth noting here that boiler suits and gilets are available too, if the weather is particularly nasty or you haven’t come appropriately dressed.

Up a short flight of stairs and a photographer snapped us in several ‘conquer the world’ poses – photos you can purchase at the end, if you wish – before George attached us one by one to the safety rail and we were ready to march in single file to the top.

Though initially steep, the climb shouldn’t be too challenging for the physically fit and you’ll be up at the summit in a matter of minutes.

Looking back at my ‘accomplice in climb’, her face bathed in sunlight, I felt a mixture of gratitude and relief that the weather was so mild when mere hours before had felt like a continuation of the longest winter ever. Would the experience be half as enjoyable in blustery showers, strong winds or with a frosty chill in the air? Glass-half-full types would call it ‘bracing’. Me? I’d rather stay on the sofa with a cup of something warm, thanks.

little bit special, what with the O2’s crowning yellow masts framing the city’s landmarks. The acoustic set was soft and romantic; a medley of love songs that those inclined to propose to their partner on top of a major London tourist attraction would happily have playing in the background while sealing the deal.

The fizz was a little sweet and a little warm, but hey, it’s had a long climb too. The mocktail – which mimicked a tequila sunset in appearance – looked more refreshing and came with a decent scoop of ice.

Soak it all up and snap your pics fast; in a matter of minutes (I’d hazard a guess at 15), it’ll be time to realign in single file and for your guide to lead you down the other side to terra firma.

Up at the O2 might not be the most original recommendation for something to do this weekend; in fact it’s quite the opposite. So let it instead be a reminder of the major bucket list attraction on your doorstep, and one to make the most of while the weather holds.

Hurricane Michael tears onto the Greenwich Theatre stage

Greenwich Theatre has gingerly reopened this month, largely with a programme of solo shows and two handers. Among them, Russell Layton’s take on the Great Storm of 1987 and the infamous televised weather forecast that didn’t see it coming. Hurricane Michael sees Russell slip into the skin of ridiculed weatherman Michael Fish to reveal the truth behind the forecasting failure. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Russell Layton to find out more about the show, and why the BBC’s failure to alert the nation to the Great Storm is a moment the British public can’t forget…

Holly O’Mahony: Firstly, could you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background as a theatre-maker?

Russell Layton: I followed the well-trodden path of many an actor, from drama school to “Can I take your order please?”. Work comes in time. Some good, some not so, but in a hugely oversubscribed industry, gainful employment is not to be scoffed at. Over time, when the longueurs start to linger, then it’s time to get out the parchment and quill.

HOM: Eloquently put! So on turning to writing your own work, what led you to create a play about weatherman Michael Fish and the controversy surrounding the Great Storm of ‘87?

RL: For people of a certain age, the

80s are remembered as a golden era for weather forecasters following on from the dull dry delivery of their 70s counterparts. These prognosticators knew how to sex-up an isobar with a twinkle in the eye and a swivel of their hips. The great storm of ‘87 is also our meteorological JFK moment; everyone remembers what they were doing, or what they saw when that storm struck. Add to that a much-loved forecaster who seemingly foresees an alternate version of events and you have the comic raw materials in place for a surreal flight of fancy.

HOM: Intriguing! Have you performed Hurricane Michael elsewhere before?

RL: The show has toured venues in the UK and was performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2016.

HOM: How does the story translate to the stage? What can viewers expect from the show?

HOM: In the show description, it says that you’ll be revealing the truth behind the events that happened that day, which allegedly led to Michael dismissing on national television a tip-off about a great storm coming. Are you really able to shed more light on the story?

RL: It is a solo show, by default rather than design. It has the

Michael Fish didn’t get it wrong. The storm he was referring to was the one crossing the Atlantic from the southern states of the US – where it was their hurricane season. As predicted, this storm ultimately petered out. The devastating storm that hit the south-east of England originated from the Bay of Biscay.

It passed through northern France before arriving here, but they failed to alert us, as the French equivalent of the met office was on strike.

HOM: Gosh! I’d not heard that version of events. So, back to you as a theatre-maker. Is Hurricane Michael your only solo project or have you written and performed in others?

RL: I performed a solo show Grecian 2000 at the Gate theatre for the RSC Fringe. I have also written a

sequel to Hurricane Michael called, wait for it, Hurricane Michael 2.

I clearly own the franchise!

HOM: One for those who can’t get enough of the story! Lastly, back to the original Hurricane Michael. How do you hope the audience responds to watching it live this week?

RL: I aim to titillate and bewilder in equal measure. With very challenging social distancing measures in place within the theatre, I hope to discover just how infectious laughter can (or can’t!) be.

I have been writing articles based on an imaginary walk working down the east (Greenwich) side of Deptford Creek. The last article described Creek Road Bridge and crossed Creek Road.

Nowadays the way south along the Creek is via Norman Road where the first site is Brewery Wharf, but first there is a wide road entrance at the turning off Creek Road – where Haddo Street and Thornham Street meet Bardsley Lane. Bardsley Lane is the real old road here and in the past it was called Lamb Lane and it was once the main road down to the Creek from Greenwich. It was also the road where the Greenwich copperas works was – and I guess that would have to be near the waterside, so the works area probably ran from the end of the lane down to the Creek.

I’ve written about the copperas industry in Greenwich Weekender before - I did two articles in 2019.

One of them was about the famous and important works on the Deptford side of the creek and I will have to get back to that later when I start writing about the Deptford bank side of the Creek. The other article was about Elizabeth Pearson, who kept a diary in the early 19th century about her family - who then owned the copperas works on both sides of the river and who lived some of the time in Greenwich where the family had a home, as well as ones in Whitstable and in the City of London.

Copperas was a useful substance which was made extensively in riverside areas throughout England.

It was used principally in the production of sulphuric acid – then

known as ‘vitriol’ or ‘Green Vitriol’ but it was also used to make dyes and mordants, and much else. The copperas stones – iron pyrites - were picked up locally around the Thames estuary, placed into troughs of water and left for some years. The liquid was then boiled for many days. It was all very dirty and very smelly.

It was also an important industry locally for other reasons – one would be in the development of making and using coke for heating to high temperatures by various industries.

I thought – as I am at the exact point in my Creek side perambulation at the end of Lamb Lane - to put down what I know about the copperas works on the Greenwich side of the Creek.

It has been rather eclipsed by the fame of the Deptford works. I only discovered its existence when I was

researching the Deptford works and it has been very difficult to find anything out about it at all. I hope this article is not going to be a continuous bleat about how difficult it has been to write it, but it really hasn’t been easy!

The first reference I have for a Greenwich copperas works is from 1695, when Sir Samuel Thompson is said to have started the works in Lamb Lane. He has proved very, very elusive. I think he was probably the Sir Samuel Thompson who was High Sheriff of Bedfordshire in the 1690s – but that is an awfully long way from Greenwich. It’s the sort of job which goes to local wealthy bigwigs who are well meaning but have nothing else to do – loyal and not very bright. He may have lived in Clapham - but even then the account I found has no detail and makes no sense at all. Some accounts say that he was also a Sheriff in the City of London in 1688 – which is clearly an important and politically sensitive job. However he doesn’t appear in the official list of City Sheriffs for that date or any other date. I think that he may have been a Royal appointment as Sheriff and was only in place, probably about a week, and never actually did anything - and it was all part of the aftermath of what became known as the Popish plot (that’s the baby in the warming pan scandal). I have no idea what his interest or his role in city politics was or more importantly what his interest in copperas was – which is what we really want to know.

By 1718 the Greenwich copperas works was in the hands of somebody called Joseph Moore. I know nothing about him – and (this really is a bleat on my part) in 1718 there were vast numbers of men called Joseph Moore and most of them seem to live in Greenwich Connecticut, which doesn’t help on Google searches . This Joseph Moore was a Quaker merchant who lived in Greenwich, Kent. He left the works to his grandson, Samuel Vandawall along with Ravensbourne House.

So, in the 1740s the Lamb Lane works was in the hands of Samuel Vandawall - who also lived in Greenwich and was also a Quaker. He married the widow of a slave-owning Mr. Neate and was a friend of Bevan, the pharmacist whose 18 th century shops evolved into the giant GLAXO chemical manufacturers.

In 1751 he bought Lindsay House, Lincolns Inn Fields from the Duchess of Somerset – and that makes him very wealthy but perhaps not overly ostentatious (or he would have bought a house in the West End). He owned a lot of property in Finsbury on the City boundaries. I can’t imagine he was very hands on with our copperas works though. So are these people all speculators while the works was run by an anonymous local management?

In the early 19th century the copperas works was owned, like the one on the Deptford side of the Creek, by Charles Pearson. He was a young man from Northampton, a Glover by trade with a City of London based haberdashery business and he

was steadily buying up the Thames estuary based copperas works.

The Pearson family would eventually take over most of the copperas industry around the Thames Estuary - not only the Greenwich and Deptford works but also works at Whitstable, Queenborough and Walton on the Naze and others. We know a lot about their domestic life in Greenwich through the diary of Elizabeth Pearson and from what she says it is quite clear that the house they lived in was somewhere in Greenwich – most probably it was in the area of today’s Thornham Street.

I’ll come back to that in a minute.

In trying to track down Ravensbourne House it would help to have the official record in street order. Sadly the closure of Greenwich Heritage Centre means I’m unable to check the ‘rate book’ – the historic lists of residents in street order which tell you where they lived and if they had paid their rates or not. By the time of the first census in 1841 the Pearsons were living in Maze Hill.

Newspaper reports are helpful but often don’t differentiate between Greenwich and Deptford. If they report that ‘copperas grounds … are near the soapworks’ that’s easy because I know where the soapworks was (in Deptford). So where exactly were Ravensbourne House and the Greenwich copperas grounds?

grounds were in Greenwich was a report of a trials when a lady gave evidence about a robbery she had seen in the 1850s. She said she had seen it happen from her kitchen window in Charlotte Street. Charlotte Street would have been newly built when she lived there and it was in the area now covered by the Thornham Street flats and it ran into Norman Road very near to no 43. There are also many many advertisements for coal sold by Shepherd and Adams on “Old Sun Wharf, Copperas Grounds, Greenwich’ – and that would have been at the end of Charlotte Street.

So the copperas grounds themselves would have been on the Creekside about half way down Norman Road.

From other reports it sounds if it was by then a very derelict and unpleasant place. There are various complaints about flooding and accumulated filth.

So by the 19th century the site was derelict and unpleasant. By the time we get the earliest maps of the area in

the 1860s the area between Greenwich and Norman Road has been developed with little houses. Ravensbourne Street - which is now more or less Norman Road - was the main road going down to the Creek from what they called ‘Bridge Street’ but which we know as Creek Road. Houses have been built in Claremont Street, Union Street, Charlotte Street and Pearson Street – called after the Pearson family. The area was cleared again in the 1960s and the current council flats built.

So although we can discover where the actual Greenwich copperas works was located, none of this helps us find Ravensbourne House - which is where the Pearson family lived. The family were wealthy and they had a lot of visitors - they would have lived somewhere pretty nice and it would have been quite big, so it’s strange that it doesn’t seem to be marked on any map which I’ve seen. It is said to have been Tudor but I think it is more likely that it dated from the time

of Samuel Thompson in the 1690s.

There was apparently a pathway going to the ‘Copperas House’ from Greenwich vicarage which would have been behind Saint Alfege’s church. I am beginning to realise that we are not really sure if there was one or two houses – Copperas House and Ravensbourne House.

Elizabeth Pearson gave some detail about the house although it’s not clear if this is the place where the family actually lived in Greenwich - she said it was ‘in Deptford’ and of course we are looking at the Greenwich copperas works, which is in Greenwich not Deptford - and I’m quite sure Elizabeth knew which was which. She says it was burnt down in January 1797 and had only just been insured with a Phoenix fire insurance company but the directors very honorably paid though the policy had not been completed (I see... hmmmm). The house was rebuilt and in 1804 she said the house was almost finished

and the eagles and lamps on the front had been replaced and old-fashioned glass put up again ‘notwithstanding great opposition’. She says the work was all done by Samuel Grimwade ‘father’s manager in Deptford’. Why is it I can find no newspaper reports of the fire or the rebuilding??

By the 1830s the Pearsons had moved

to Maze Hill and the house was probably demolished in the 1840s.

And where it was, and if there was one house or two I really don’t know.

So – this is all I know about the Greenwich copperas works. I know who owned it and I know where the works was. But that is the barest possible outline.

Charlton Invicta and Millwall Romans meet for the first time in historic south London derby

Charlton Invicta hosted Millwall Romans at the club’s training ground on Sunday 6 June for the first ever competitive game between two LGBTQ+ teams formally affiliated to professional football clubs.

Initially founded as London Romans, Millwall Romans became formally affiliated to Millwall Community Trust in July 2020, three years after Invicta with Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT).

Commercial Director Wayne Mumford attended the game alongside CACT and the club’s Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Dr Michael Seeraj, and spoke to Charlton Invicta before the kick-off.

He said: “I enjoyed going along and meeting the team on Sunday, to be part of another historic first for the club.
