Meet the visionaries designing our world A new exhibition on show at the University of Greenwich’s Stephen Lawrence Gallery illustrates the ways in which contemporary landscapes are made and remade through interrelations between people and the worlds around them. Using the visions of leading artists, designers, and researchers – including Harry Bix, Luis Callejas, Charlotte Hansson, Emma Colthurst, James Corner and Teddy Cruz – the exhibition brings to the forefront the social structure of landscapes by focusing on a range of critical practices and daily actions. Called The Landscapists, the reflective exhibition has been curated by Ed Wall, Emma Colthurst and Alexis Liu in response to a 2020 issue of industry-focused publication Architectural Design.

Solar Eclipses, by which a portion of the Planet Earth is engulfed in a shadow cast by the moon blocking the sunlight, are rare events. The next one due to be visible in the UK is on June 10, and is likely to run from 10:08am until 12:22pm. Join the Royal Observatory astronomers for a live stream of the event this weekend, in which their expert team will explain the science behind the solar eclipse and answer any questions you have. A live feed of the Sun delivered through the Observatory’s Annie Maunder Astrographic Telescope will offer an unparalleled view of the happening.

Infused with magical realism, fantastical creatures and a central character who embarks on both a physical and mental journey, the films of Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli have the ability to charm audiences of all ages. 2004’s release Howl’s Moving Castle is a classic of the canon, and is showing at both Bromley and Greenwich Picturehouses this weekend.

The story follows Sophie (voiced by Emily Mortimer) who lives an uneventful life working at her father's hat shop, until she befriends a wizard, Howl (Christian Bale), who lives in a magical flying castle. Seize this opportunity to watch it on the big screen.

The Old Royal Naval College is hosting a summer dining pop-up for two nights only this June. In the regal setting of the King WIlliam Undercroft, tuck into a set-menu featuring Pan fried hake with fennel, leek and samphire; and Trifle with Drambuie custard, freeze-dried berries and tempered white chocolate. Full steam ahead for Crossness Pumping Station’s second open day

Following the success of its May open day, Crossness Pumping Station is inviting in visitors of all ages for another chance to explore the Grade 1-listed site and, if you’re lucky, see the engine Prince Consort in action. Designed in the 1860’s by Sir Joseph Bazalgette, Crossness played a fundamental role in helping eradicate cholera from London. The open day is a chance to learn about the Victorian sewer system and the complex contraptions used to orchestrate it. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Greg Warner, volunteer at Crossness, to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: This is your second open day since you were given the green light to open to the public back in May. What will there be for visitors to see and do?

Greg Warner: Visitors will be able to explore the full site, including: the Beam Engine House, containing the world’s four largest Rotative Beam Engines; the Boiler House (with Exhibition Gallery, cafeteria and WCs); the Fitting Shop (where much restoration of Beam Engine parts has been done); the Valve House (originally the Schoolroom but now housing our collection of restored small engines and pumps); the RANG Railway Engine Shed (to and from which our train currently runs for about 450 metres alongside the pedestrian access path; John Ridley Walk, which goes from the carpark in Bazalgette Way to the Engine Shed); the formal Victorian Garden; and the Eco-Garden (please keep well clear of the five beehives!).

HOM: So will there be guided tours?

GW: There are no formal guided tours on our Open Days but we do have knowledgeable volunteers posted at strategic points around our site to answer visitors’ questions. Sadly, because of COVID-19, we are not able to offer our tours of

HOM: It’s likely to be fascinating for adults, but are any special preparations being made to keep kids entertained?

GW: There will be craft activities for families, including a chance to make plague-masks or a Bazalgette puppet, and an activity trail.

HOM: A month in, what are you most enjoying about having the public on site again?

GW: The buzz and pleasure of having visitors on-site enjoying what they see and learning how things were done 150 years ago. And, to be blunt, having their money which enables the Trust to do more to restore and maintain Crossness.

HOM: Do you have a favourite unusual fact about Crossness you can share with us?

GW: That Joseph Bazalgette was a ‘miasmatist’, believing that Cholera was the result of bad air, rather than a waterborne disease. That debate took up most of the 19th Century!

Blooming Gardens: Admiring the flora and fauna at Eltham Palace The manicured gardens surrounding Eltham Palace are in full bloom, and visitors are invited to admire its horticultural heritage this weekend. Blooming Gardens features a programme of introductory talks and self-led tours, inviting visitors to dig deeper into the history of the garden and soak up the sights, scents and sounds of summer.

Musical performances throughout the day will add atmosphere to the event, while kids’ craft activities will keep little ones entertained. And if you fall in love with the best in bloom, you might just find a little sample to take home. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Mallory McDonald, PR Manager for English Heritage, to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Tell us about the backstory to Blooming Gardens… how did it come about?

Mallory McDonald: Blooming Gardens started at Walmer Castle in Kent to welcome visitors to spend time enjoying the garden as spring ended and summer began. After its initial success it has been running for a number of years at several English Heritage sites, including Brodsworth Hall and Osborne House. However, this is only the second time we are hosting the event at Eltham Palace.

HOM: What will there be for visitors to see and do on the day?

MM: At our Blooming Gardens event visitors can explore Eltham Palace’s beautiful gardens at their leisure, whilst enjoying the delightful sounds of jazz music. There will be tours and demonstrations from our Gardens Team repeated throughout the day, with limited spaces to enable visitors to socially distance. There will also be the chance to buy a glass of wine and sample our selection of jams and curds.

HOM: Visitors can also take themselves on a self-guided tour though, right?

MM: The self-guided tour will take in highlights from around the garden including those within the inner court, the borders and garden rooms of the moat, and out beyond the moat ridge to include the meadows and long grass areas that still give Eltham Palace the feeling of being set in countryside.

HOM: You've also got a line-up of musicians performing. Can you tell us anything about the bands?

MM: We have a jazz band booked for the weekend, who will be playing sets on the South Lawn.

HOM: And for kids?

MM: Children can get creative in our craft tent as well as learn about herbal distillation in the Tudor period from our costumed performers. This year we are offering children the opportunity to decorate a flower pot with their own design, which they can then take home free of charge.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope visitors take away from attending your Blooming Gardens event this year?

MM: We hope they leave with a feeling that Eltham Palace has an amazing garden filled with interesting plants for all seasons, that will be worth coming back to in the autumn.

HOM: There’s also a series of introductory talks running. What will they be covering?

MM: The talks will help people to understand the history of the gardens and landscape of Eltham, how the current gardens came about through the Courtaulds – eccentric millionaires Stephen and Virginia who purchased Eltham

One actor, two powerful stories: a double bill at Greenwich Theatre Call Mr. Robeson tells the story of actor, singer and civil rights campaigner Paul Robeson, whose ‘radical’ (progressive) beliefs saw him branded a traitor and denied opportunities to perform.

Featuring some of his most famous songs, including ‘Ol’ Man River’, Call Mr. Robeson charts the eventful life of one of the 20th Century’s most impressive but overlooked figures, who was a forerunner of the civil rights movement.

It was on being told his singing voice sounded like Paul Robeson that Tayo first became aware of the activist. “I stumbled upon his biography shortly after that. I read it and realised that this single man's story could inform us about world history and politics, and at the same time give inspiration to those undergoing struggles for equality and freedom today,” he explains, when we speak. “I knew then that a musical play would be an excellent vehicle for this particular story, and it spoke to me particularly because I was already a singer. I didn't think it would be me eventually writing and performing the play, but I am grateful that that was the way it turned out.”

Tayo has won several awards for the play since he first performed it at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe back in August 2007. Since then, he’s gone on to perform it in five continents and at several impressive locations, including New York’s Carnegie Hall (2012) and London’s West End (2013).

He has previously performed it at Greenwich Theatre too, back in 2009.

“The play has been in demand continuously for thirteen years, and it took Covid to interrupt the constant touring,” he says. “It is also Covid and the need for social distancing, small casts and a decent-sized space that made it right for me to return to Greenwich Theatre, eleven years after my last appearance here,” he adds.

Actor and singer Tayo Aluko is performing his two solo shows, Call Mr. Robeson and Just an Ordinary Lawyer, at Greenwich Theatre this week. The shows were originally due to run back in January, but with the theatre forced to close to comply with lockdown restrictions, audiences have had to wait a further six months to see them. Both shows see the Nigerian-born actor embody a Black historical figure whose exemplary story deserves to shine in the spotlight. In fact, it was this urge to become a mouthpiece for his theatrical subjects that led Tayo to abandon his architecture degree and pursue his earlier love of acting and singing instead, writes Holly O’Mahony…

interest in music, and more importantly, sports, gave me the opportunity to examine and share stories of Black liberation struggles as played out, literally, on the sports field.”

Rehearsing and performing two plays simultaneously about two very different figures surely comes with its challenges, not least of all remembering which character’s shoes you’re in on stage. Tayo, however, is completely unfazed.

“It's thrilling to be able to get those mental and physical muscles going again after so long,” he says. “Having performed both on the same day on two or three occasions in the past, I am not too worried about getting the characters or lines confused.”

In seeing the stories of the two figures played out on stage, Tayo hopes they inspire “joy” in the audience, “and inspiration to continue the struggle that giants endured before us”.

It was on seeing Joseph Stein’s musical Fiddler on the Roof as a 16-year-old that Tayo first became aware of the powers of theatre to educate an audience. “It tells the story of a Jewish community being forced into exile from their village in [Imperial Russia],” he recalls. “I would come to understand decades later that it proves that performance is a direct and visceral way of getting important history across to an otherwise largely disinterested public, and correcting many wrong assumptions,” he explains.

“I’ve since come to believe that my storytelling on stage is my contribution to correcting the historical record, for example that the freedoms Black people have won around the globe were granted to us by benevolent white people, when they were in fact the result of tremendously intelligent and brave struggle and sacrifice.”

Was it Sowande's secondary interest in music that attracted Tayo to portraying him on stage?

What would the two historical figures have made of one another were they to have met in real life? “Sowande would have been awed and star-struck

by Robeson, I'm sure,” chuckles Tayo. “He was a quiet, humble man, and may not have left much of an impression on Robeson, other than sharing a love of music, and different approaches to political activism. On the other hand, Sowande would have dined out on his having met Robeson till the day he died, I'm sure.”

“Yes, as a singer and actor, it makes sense to find singers to tell stories about, or in Sowande's case, through,” he says. “I say that because his life story is nowhere near as interesting or dramatic as Paul Robeson's, but his

Deptford Cinema launches summer season under new roof

The pandemic has been particularly tough on arts venues, many of which have been forced to remain closed since March 2020 – with some now permanently shuttered. Volunteer-run community venue Deptford Cinema was one such casualty, physically speaking. But while the movie theatre itself is no more, it’s good news for local cinephiles: the brand, ethos and offering of Deptford Cinema remains alive and well, with the team behind it organising screenings out of local arts organisation the Albany and partner venue Deptford Lounge, writes Holly O’Mahony…

“When we realised we would have to leave the old venue, we were very sad as we have spent a lot of time and energy over the years building it from scratch,” admits Charlotte Hendy, director of Deptford Cinema.

“Unfortunately, as a non-profit organisation, we were not eligible for the amount of funding that would have enabled us to hang onto the venue for the duration of the pandemic and had to leave to avoid losing the chance of being able to reopen. It was a very hard decision as we were obviously very attached, and not one we took lightly.”

A much-loved pillar of the borough’s cultural scene, Deptford Cinema has built up a loyal fanbase in the seven years since it opened.

And multi-purpose arts venue the Albany has stepped in to house its screenings while the team looks for a more permanent home.

“We have partnered up with the Albany [which also manages

Deptford Lounge] to screen a season of films this summer, with a broad range of titles from brand new films to classics,” beams Charlotte. “We are huge fans of the Albany and are thrilled to be working with them.”

“We hope that they will have a wonderful time and remember how much fun going to the cinema is, and will remember to come back and see us once we have a new venue next year,” she says. “By partnering up with the Albany, we aim to appeal to people who may have never have considered visiting our old venue on the broadway and to welcome back regulars.”

On the roster for the summer season, which is weighted largely towards new releases, is Ryan Coogler’s 2018 hit Black Panther (the Albany Gardens, June 12), starring the late Chadwick Boseman. Also showing is Greta Gerwig’s stylish 2019 adaptation of Little Women (Deptford Lounge, August 7) and Olivia Wilde’s 2019 smash-hit Booksmart (Deptford Lounge, September 4) – a 21st-century celebration of girl power starring Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever.

“We very much hope to find a new venue in 2022, and have started to talk to the council about possible locations,” Charlotte reveals. “We will let everyone know once we find somewhere.”

The ferries and bridges of Creek Road

Mary Mills Creek Road is now part of a major highway between Greenwich and Deptford, linking North West Kent to central London, running parallel to the river in south London, and which crosses Deptford creek as the main obstacle on its route. Until the early 19th century this route did not really exist except as a series of minor roads. Paterson’s Roads, which detailed routes throughout the country, ignores it as a way between London and Greenwich even in revised versions of the 1820s. In its earliest days it was called ‘Bridge Street”.

Over the years before 1800 there had been talk of a crossing of Deptford Creek on the site of what is now Creek Road bridge. In 1754 there was a newspaper report of a plan to place a stone bridge over the creek reached by a new road running off the Deptford Turnpike Road - that’s the Roman road we now know as the A2 and it would maybe have been a bit like Deptford Church Street is now. It was thus hoped to provide a route which would avoid the long climb up Shooters Hill which the Roman road follows.

It appears that a ferry across the Creek near the site of the later bridge was also established in 1754 but just over twenty years later, in 1777 there were requests for a Parliamentary debate and a possible enabling Bill for a ‘new road from the foot of London Bridge to Woolwich via Deptford creek”. And

it was said it would be as ‘pleasant a road as any in the kingdom’.

The ferry crossed here from 1754. It was said to have been set up by the father of a Mary Metcalf who was the landowner on the Greenwich side of the Creek. He had entered into an agreement with the landowner on the other side and then handed it to ‘watermen’ for management. It was called Greenwich Sunday Ferry – not all watermen’s stairs were licenced for use on a Sunday and by calling it Sunday meant that it ran on that day too. The ferry ran slightly down-creek of the current bridge, going from the Hoy Inn stairs to a set of stairs on the Greenwich bank almost opposite.

The ferry was still in use in 1804 when Elizabeth Pearson recorded in her diary “Mother, Clara and I to

Greenwich, at 4 o’clock Bromley Stage to Deptford. Walked thence to the Creek and ferried over to our house”. ‘Our house’ was Ravensbourne House in what is now the area of the Tarves Estate.

When the bridge was eventually built disputes arose with the watermen and over any rights held by Miss Mecalf – who was by then ‘lunatic’ and represented by a ‘committee’. They made the case that she was entitled to some money from the tolls levied at the new bridge and a writ of mandamus was issued. This is an instruction to a public body to undertake a certain action or task. Following a vast amount of legal argument Miss Metcalf’s Committee lost.

In the late 1790s a company was floated to build a bridge over the Creek on the alignment of what is now Creek Road. This hoped to raise £25,000 in 500 shares at £50 each.

In July 1803 an Act was agreed by Parliament “for building a bridge over the River Ravensbourne at or near its mouth or outlet into the River Thames in the County of Kent and for making and maintaining proper approaches thereto’. This was initially to be a tolled timber footbridge and work began on acquiring the necessary raw

In 1815 a more permanent structure was built, which would carry vehicles and thus replace the footbridge. It was 25 feet 6 inches between the parapets at the ends and narrowed towards the centre to 15 feet, which included a 7-foot carriageway. It was still not adequate for the traffic it had to carry and in, 1881; the carriageway was widened to 16 feet with 5-foot wide footpaths. However it could only carry vehicles of less than 8 tons.

This must have been a lifting bridge, although descriptions of this seem to be hard to find. A print of 1841 shows its approach from Deptford which is modest enough with small plain parapets and a little tollhouse o the south of the road from Deptford.

Artillery Volunteers, (dare I suggest that rather than the real army they were gents in smart uniforms out for a ‘field day’). They turned up at the bridge and said they were the military and thus exempt from paying tolls.

They were later charged with ‘evading the toll payable by foot passengers... and also with assaulting the collector’ . The collector had asked how many were there – and was told 15. The band which accompanied the soldiers was playing “See the Conquering Hero Comes’. The Collector opened the gate upon which the Captain yelled ‘Charge’ and the troop all galloped though the gate followed by about 300 ‘followers of the camp’the Sergeant yelling at them ‘Now, quick double march, one, two, one, two” The collector approached the Captain whose busby then fell off and as a result the Sergeant knocked the collector to the ground, holding his drawn sword to his neck. (Jury reported by then to be falling off their benches laughing). The ensuing case concerned whether or not volunteer soldiers counted as soldiers in cases – like the bridge – where the military were exempt from tolls. The assault charge was not proceeded with.

An incident of 1861 might be mentioned in respect of the tolls. This concerned the 8th Kent (Blackheath)

The tolls were eventually abolished when the bridge was acquired by the Metropolitan Board of Works in March

materials. I assume also that the new Company purchased land alongside the approaches to the new bridge, because later plots of land in that area have them listed as the freeholder.

In October 1805 at ‘2 o’clock in the afternoon’ the Committee of Proprietors of the Bridge held a ceremony to open the bridge. The event took place before a ‘great concourse of spectators’.

1880. In 1909 the London County Council built an electric tramway using a conduit system along Creek Road and thus needed to widen the bridge. Work began in 1910 and was completed in 1913. It was 45 foot wide between the parapets and had a 33-foot carriageway.

There was an opening span of 60 feet and a fixed span on the east side of 27 feet 2 inches.

On the 8th September, 1940, the bridge was severely damaged by enemy bombing. The eastern bascule moved bodily laterally and forward. The river pier was badly shattered, the eastern abutment damaged, and there was a hole in the deck of the fixed span. The two leaves of the bridge were fastened together and it became a fixed structure. This meant it could be used by road traffic but the creek could not be used by vessels with masts.

Shipping interests pressed for a way to be found to allow it to open but it remained a fixed structure. However, The London County Council was under a statutory obligation to maintain it as an opening bridge and eventually work did begin on a new bridge.

Before demolition of the old bridge began was commenced a temporary bridge, was built upstream of the old bridge.

The new bridge was founded on reinforced concrete piles driven into a dense stratum of Thanet Sandi the Creek. The moving parts consist of three main steel girders carrying the deck. The abutments are in mass concrete, brick faced, with brick pilasters and stone and rest on steel quadrants which

roll on tracks. The bridge is electrically operated, and I have always understood that it is operated by staff from the team at the Blackwall tunnel. Is this still the case?

In April 1954 an opening ceremony was opened

by Hugh Molson, Parliamentary Secretary, at the Ministry of Transport (he was a Tory and a friend of Evelyn Waugh who saw him as a figure of ‘louche daring’). He cut a ribbon at the approach to the bridge, and then, accompanied by London County Council and local officials, walked to the control room to inspect the machinery. Within three minutes the two leaves were raised in order to allow the passage through the bridge of fire float Massey Shaw. This led to the local paper headlining ‘A VETERAN OF DUNKIRK TAKES PART IN THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE NEW BRIDGE AT DEPTFORD CREEK.’ I have always understood that when the ‘little ships’ assembled back from Dunkirk that Massey Shaw led the flotilla up the river to the London Fire Brigade Pier on the Albert Embankment.

I am sure that one of her attractions is her pumps which allow her to send huge sprays of water up in the air – pumps made on Deptford Creek by Merryweathers.
