Climb to a sky-high concert

Back in early 2020, just before Covid hit and everything changed, the Queen’s House opened an exhibition, Faces of a Queen, which saw the three surviving versions of the Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I go on show together for the first time in their 430-year history. The portraits commemorate the most famous conflict in Elizabeth I’s reign: the failed attempt by the Spanish Armada to invade England in 1588. The Queen’s House has reopened and the portraits are still on show together for a limited time this summer.

Study their subtle differences while you can.

Up at the O2 has relaunched its Thursday Lates series. Small groups are led on a guided tour, scaling the shell of the world-famous music venue before watching a live acoustic performance at the summit. You’ll be given a boiler suit, boots, harness and a latch to safely aid your climb.

Transitions Dance Company reunites on stage

The last 15 months have been extremely challenging for everyone, but for Transitions Dance Company, a 14-strong troupe of international dancers based at Trinity Laban conservatoire, it’s meant splitting into fragments to rehearse from home, each dancer like a piece of a jigsaw, uncertain when they’ll next be able to connect and form a whole. All the more joyous, then, that the company is finally back in the studio together, preparing three new works to bring to the stage this weekend, writes Holly O’Mahony…

After months of rehearsing over Zoom, reunions don’t come much sweeter than this. Reveling in a renewed sense of community and purpose, Transitions has been working on a versatile programme of three new pieces to perform at Laban Theatre before embarking on a national tour.

First up is ‘Souffle’ by Dutch choreographer Didy Veldman, which has been double cast to ensure the whole company can perform. Next is ‘Cutting room floor’, created in collaboration with British company Dog Kennel Hill Project and inspired by 70s disaster movies.

Last but not least is ‘allowed by circumstance or pangloss in grid’, with choreography by Swiss-British dance artist Rahel Vonmoos.

Holly O’Mahony: It’s been a turbulent year for Transitions Dance Company, with live performances cancelled because of the lockdown.

How are you feeling about getting back on stage together again?

Beryl Tay: I am very excited, especially as my last performance was almost two years ago back in Singapore. I feel really blessed and lucky to still be able to continue with the Transitions Dance Company tour amidst this pandemic.

ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT HOM: What can audiences expect from your three new works?

BT: The audience is in for a roller coaster ride, with three extremely different and thought-provoking pieces. In Didy Veldman’s piece, we are cheeky, flirtatious and romantic.

Dog Kennel Hill Project’s piece uses 70s disaster films as inspiration for our movement material. Rahel Vonmoos’ piece involves the idea of bodily touch and manipulation to portray a sense of ourselves. I believe these pieces will pique the audience’s curiosity but allow them to make their own interpretations.

SAS: Our programme is a collection of three different and powerful new works which show a variety of skills and ideas explored by the company over the year. It’s funny, provoking, charming, touching, and very beautiful. Didy Veldman’s ‘Souffle’ is the most technical of our pieces. ‘Cutting room floor’ is inspired by 70s disaster movies and explores physical theatre, complete with speaking and prop work. The

final piece by Rahel Vonmoos has a bit more of a somatic spine to it and has a very complex inspiration, stemming from Metamorphosis as well as touch and being remembered.

HOM: Following your performance at the Laban Theatre, you’re taking your three new pieces on tour.

Where are you performing them?

BT: We are taking our pieces on tour around the UK to Bristol, Birmingham, London, Chichester, Newcastle and Worcester. There is also a mystery place that hasn’t been confirmed yet but this suspense is making us super excited!

SAS: We will also be releasing a digital filmed version of the show in July, so audiences can watch it from home.

HOM: How do you hope the audience resonates with the works? And will this vary between the three pieces?

BT: All I can say is, the three pieces will take the audience on a journey

of different sensations, ranging from experiencing joy, to being curious, to feeling involved in the performance.

There is no fixed feeling that we are aiming for them to experience.

We want them to be open-minded in receiving and interpreting our pieces, and to continue thinking about them after leaving the theatre.

SAS: These are three very different pieces which I love! I think the audience is going to get to feel a lot of different emotions, and I hope that is enjoyable and touching for them.

HOM: It can’t have been easy being unable to meet in person for so much of the year. How have you coped with such long periods away from the rehearsal room and one another?

BT: Looking back, the biggest hurdle during this experience was the recent lockdown where we had our morning training and rehearsals on Zoom in our confined spaces. We had to adapt to this new norm of learning and interaction. I’m really

glad that things have taken a turn for the better. But, as a result of that, I believe that we became more appreciative of the studio space we’re given, the energy of the company and the presence of one another.

SAS: We did have a slightly unexpected few months of online learning between January and March, but the programme was incredibly quick to adapt how we were working and honestly it’s been such a fruitful experience. Coming back into the studio after this time online we had a wealth of new considerations and ideas. Transitions is ready to dance no matter what!

HOM: Lastly, what are you most looking forward to about getting back on stage in front of a live audience?

BT: I miss the adrenaline before a show as we standby backstage. I miss the stage, the lights and the atmosphere of the entire experience. I miss the human connection between the dancers on stage and the audience. Lastly, the

one thing I am sure we’re all looking forward to is presenting a performance deserving of the audience’s applause!

SAS: I’m really looking forward to getting to exchange energy with a live audience again. It really makes a world of difference to hear their responses and feel their excitement in real time. Even when things don’t go as planned or don’t feel perfect, the live audience makes it so special. And performing with my classmates live on stage just makes everything feel right.

Little adventurers wanted in Canary Wharf Immersive events company Tea Dance for Little People has launched a Mystery History Family Trail in the most unlikely setting: London’s steely finance hub, Canary Wharf. Family Mischief and Mayhem at the Old Royal Naval College

Local illustrator Nick Ellwood is celebrating 500 years of Mischief and Mayhem in Greenwich with his new exhibition at the Old Royal Naval College. Many will have seen Ellwood’s sketches, which appeal playfully to all ages, as part of the Painted Hall Family Trail. Now, they’re being given an exhibition of their own. Expect original artworks featuring tales of astronomers, architects, royal figures, gods and navy professionals, inspired by the art of the Painted Hall. Wellbeing workshops at Royal Museums Greenwich Throughout the half term week, Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) is hosting a series of free family workshops promoting wellbeing.

In the sessions, you’ll explore the ways sailors kept their spirits up and their moods positive during long voyages. Building the first motor cars

Continuing with our walk down the Greenwich bank of Deptford Creek, we are still north of Creek Road, and in Norway Street.

So, turn south, walk to the end of Norway Street and get to the junction with the main road. To your right is a wide strip of pavement with a flower bed on it. This tiny area was once Kent Wharf and, as might be expected, in the 19th century it was used for coal transhipment. On its north side it runs along the small dock which comes off the Creek towards Norway Street.

In 1840 Kent Wharf was used by Pope Brothers. They were coal merchants with numerous depots, including ones in Bristol and Goole, in Yorkshire, as well as numerous outlets in London including Dockhead, Wapping and at Highbridge Wharf in Greenwich.

In 1833 they sold “Best Hetton's, Stewart's, or Lambton's Wallsend”, all from the Durham coalfield. Their head office seems to have been in Abingdon Street in Westminster – which still runs along the riverside and would in 1840 have been very near Westminster

Gas Works. Their trade card includes a rather famous drawing of a collier ship of the day. Pope Brothers seem to have been ubiquitous with depots everywhere – and maybe originating from Bristol. Searching on the net I have found several references to a coal mining Pope Brothers in the US – are they the same people?

described as a builder and coal merchant.

His level of prosperity can be gauged in that he was also a shareholder in the, short lived, Deptford Pier Company – which proposed a link from the Greenwich Railway to a Thameside wharf at Upper Watergate. He died in 1853 described as ‘of Deal’ the Kent port – he had clearly retired to the seaside.

By the late 1850s the site had become the Kent Iron Works and in occupation by J.Todd & Co. Todd described himself with the slightly old fashioned title of ‘millwright’. However John Todd held a number of patents, including in 1859 one for “Improvements applicable to screw propellers in the propulsion of vessels” - which was anything but old fashioned. He had also patented “an improved machine for straightening, bending, curving, and circling beams, bars, and plates of iron, or other metals”. What happed to John Todd and the Kent Iron Works is not clear as dates for him and his successor are not consistent. Most likely he had gone out of business before 1860 when the site was sold by auction.

In 1858 he had published a long list of machinery for sale and which it is assumed he was making. “The Kent Iron Works ... fit for many other purposes” together with a list of machinery on the site to be disposed of.

Todd’s successor at the Kent Iron Works was Thomas Cowan, who had been born in St.Petersburg Russia. His father, John, for the previous 30 years had been an engineer in the Russian Government Service, coming to England with his family on the outbreak of the Crimea War in 1854.

Thomas had had a privileged upbringing and education there and in England he completed his schooling at Brighton, served an engineering apprenticeship with the firm of J and G Rennie and attended lectures at the Royal Government School of Mines.

In England the Cowans had settled at Deptford, and John Cowan owned the Kent Ironworks in Greenwich - I assume he had taken it over from John Todd. In 1861 Thomas was living in Deptford with his mother and sister, aged about 20 and described as a ‘Civil engineer’. At that time he took out a patent with a John Grieve Winton for "improvements in the means for actuating machine hammers, which said improvements are also applicable to pile-driving, and other such-like machines and purposes. He took Kent Iron Works over when he was 22.

Cowan seems to have been one of a group of young men interested in building a car.

What had happened was that one of the last steam cars to run experimentally on Kent roads was built by the man who became the torpedo manufacturer, Sir Alfred Yarrow.

Yarrow was born in Islington and trained as an engineer. As a boy, together with a friend, James Hilditch, he experimented with a whole range of inventions. Eventually in 1861 they developed a steam car and in 1861 this was manufactured by Thomas Cowan at the Kent Iron Works.

Yarrow's vehicle was driven from Greenwich to Bromley once a week. This was to demonstrate the machine to possible purchasers. In Bromley the party would stop for 'some refreshment' before returning to Greenwich. People along the route were clearly disturbed by the noise of the engine.

It is said that one old lady seeing it go past ran to her window. Seeing the flames and smoke she thought the devil was there. It has not proved easy to discover the truth of this of this story. Many of the early road vehicles are supposed to have led to stories of how people thought they were 'the devil' .

It is hard to believe that by 1862 there could have been any old ladies left on the roads around Bromley who did not know what a steam vehicle looked like! She probably had good reason for disliking the smoke and noise - perhaps 'the devil' is the term she was using for Yarrow and his noisy young friends!

They later took a longer trip, to Horsham – ‘a distance of nearly forty miles in which its capability at ascending hills was severely tried’. This must have been a difficult journey and there must have been a good reason for undertaking it. It cannot be a co-incidence that a year later Thomas Cowan married Fanny Mitchell, from Horsham.

On another occasion the carriage met a mounted policeman whose horse took fright and threw him, breaking his leg. This is said to be the incident which led to the infamous 'red flag act’ by which all steam vehicles had to proceed at the pace of man who had to walk in front of them holding a red flag. I must admit to some doubt about this statement. There is no obvious sign of the story in local papers. There was a series of Acts of Parliament and amendments to do with road transport in the early 1860s and the red flag requirement (which was only sometimes in force) was part of one of them.

Members of Parliament were concerned about road surfaces and the damage done to them by increasingly heavy road vehicles.

They also wanted to give power to various local authorities to control where these vehicles were allowed to go and where not.

In the back of Parliament's mind must also have been the dangers involved in these very young men (Yarrow, like Cowan, was only 20) driving heavy vehicles over ordinary roads at night while fuelled with drink from the numerous 'entertainment' stops.

Around 1 in 3 people who have Covid-19 have no symptoms and are spreading it without knowing.

Cowan however was manufacturing all sorts of steam driven engines and other devoices – it’s hard to work out how it was all done on such a tiny site.

That could be a friend, relative, workmate.

It could even be you. Make testing twice a week part of your routine, to help keep people around you safe.

By 1866 Cowan was bankrupt and the Kent Iron Works and its contents were offered for auction. In 1871 it was in the hands of a Thomas Cook, engineer, who was also bankrupt within a year. By the 1880s the site of the Kent Iron works was in the hands of the coal merchants, Dowells, like all the other sites in this part of the Creek.

CACT announces 2020/21 PFA Community Champions

“They both deserve to be named PFA Community Champions and I look forward to them visiting more of our programmes again in the future.”

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has named Jess King and Ryan Inniss as this year’s Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Community Champions.

“I was really surprised when I won this award, but really humbled and grateful for the opportunity that I get to go out and work in different communities and hopefully make an impact.”

Jess, like Ryan in her first season at the Club, has immersed herself in a range of CACT projects and become a role model for many young people, particularly through her work as a youth mentor.

Defender Ryan Inniss also involved himself with a range of CACT projects.

The 28-year-old forward supported young people in Greenwich and Bexley throughout the season, as well as meeting participants at CACT’s Premier League Kicks tournament, a girls Wildcats session and a Charlton Upbeats training session.

Speaking about being named as this year’s PFA Community Champion, Jess said:

Carl Krauhaus, CACT’s Head of Early Help and Prevention, described Ryan as a “hero” to the Upbeats.

Ryan, 25, in particular engaged with the Upbeats project this season, organising a Zoom Q&A during lockdown and the popular dance-off competition, where his teammates learnt Upbeat celebrations. He met the Upbeats in person on the day of the Upbeats Walk.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading), into Nathan Way from the junction of Pettman Crescent.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Pettman Crescent, Plumstead Road, Pettman Crescent, Western Way, Eastern Way, and Nathan Way. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

Once again, we are on the hunt for the best amateur gardeners in Greenwich and we want you to get involved!

The lockdowns and tier restrictions over the past year have meant that we have had to stay at home more than ever. For lots of us, sowing seeds and planting flowers has been a great escape and a positive activity to focus on. If you have a newfound passion for planting - or you’re a seasoned gardener - then enter Greenwich in Bloom for your chance to win up to £60 in garden centre vouchers.

You don’t need to have a garden to enter - there’s a category for hanging baskets, window boxes or pots – all that’s required are green fingers and enthusiasm!

The entries will be assessed by independent judges: Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Equalities Cllr Adel Khaireh, Mayor Cllr Denise Hyland and Deputy Mayor Cllr Leo Fletcher.

Last year the junior gardener category showed just how many talented young residents there are in Royal Greenwich and there are sure to be even more this year. The winner of this category will win £10 in garden centre vouchers and every child that enters will get a packet of seeds.

Winners of the other four categories will win £60 for first place, £35 for second and £20 for third in Coolings Garden Centre vouchers and every entrant will be awarded a £5 voucher. Coolings Garden Centre has supported the competition for many years and we are happy to be able to support a valued local business, whilst also giving away some great prizes!
