No child should go without during the school holidays Across Royal Greenwich, there are families who struggle outside of the school term time.

For families who usually rely on free school meals, juggling childcare with tight budgets and feeding their children can be difficult.

That is why once again the council will be providing hundreds of free, nutritious meals to any child that needs them.

From Tuesday 1 to Friday 4 June, meals will be available at libraries, centres and adventure play centres across the borough. You can check our serving times at royalgreenwich.gov.uk/holidaymeals.

There is no sign up required. Simply turn up to our serving locations to collect a healthy grab-and-go lunch to takeaway.

The council is committed to doing what it can to end child food poverty and we know from previous demand that there is an immense need for schemes such as this.

“It's clear that for some families, the school holidays can be a financial challenge, and we know how vital our holiday meals are. We will continue to do what we can to ensure that no child goes without in our borough.”

Meals will be freshly cooked and delivered to venues across the whole borough.

A tale of an unlikely friendship Brendan Murray’s stage adaptation of The Hare and the Tortoise is being brought to life at St George’s Garrison Church in a production created by the team at the Tramshed in Woolwich. Suitable for ages 3 –7, the story tells of the unlikely friendship between a hare and a tortoise, who bound through the seasons together, sleeping in winter, planting carrots in spring, fishing in summer and training for a certain race in autumn. This retelling of the age-old fable is a chance for little ones to learn about friendship, taking one’s time and the value of differences.

A rising opera star graces Blackheath Halls Nigerian-American soprano Francesca Chiejina has been the face of London’s opera scene this spring. The recent graduate of the Jette Parker Young Artists’ Programme at the Royal Opera House comes to Blackheath Halls this Sunday, accompanied by acclaimed pianist and curator Jocelyn Freeman, to perform Schubert’s Winterreise – a cycle of 24 songs for voice and piano based on the poems by Wilhelm Müller.

The recital is being preceded by a round-table discussion on Winterreise, chaired by Radio 3 presenter Natasha Riordan and Dr Natasha Loges.

A colourful catwalk on Greenwich Peninsula Liz West’s Hundreds and Thousands installation has wrapped The Tide on Greenwich Peninsula in an explosion of colour. Now, artists from various disciplines are responding to the piece. Among them is British textile and fashion designer Kitty Joseph, who is known for her rainbow-hued collections. Across two performances this Saturday, Kitty is staging a fashion showcase, ‘Chromantics’, which will see socially distanced performers populate the riverside section of the Tide in a prismatic display. The spectacle will be a live response to Liz’s work and also a celebration of the upcoming 10-year anniversary of the Kitty Joseph brand. Backed by music from London DJ and music curator Marsha Smith (better known as Marshmello), and choreographed by dancer Gareth Mole, the event will see performers dressed in standout pieces from the Kitty Joseph archive as well as garments from her new collection.

The greatest show: Zippos Circus is back in town!

After months of closure, the enduringly popular Zippos Circus is back up and running, bringing its Big Top tour of Carnival to Blackheath. The show is being presented by Brazilian showman Paulo Dos Santos, and will feature a fresh array of jaw-dropping stunts from acrobats, aerialists, comics, daredevil motorcyclists and more. The show promises to be as thrilling and colourful as ever, bringing some much-needed live entertainment to the area. A creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky musical The final year students of Trinity Laban’s Musical Theatre programme are presenting their production of The Addams Family musical at the Albany in Deptford. Based on the famous cartoon

When dance responds to art

Liz West’s Hundreds and Thousands installation has transformed The Tide at Greenwich Peninsula into a parade of vibrant colours and billowing ribbons.

But the project doesn’t stop there. Award-winning dance artist and choreographer Laura Amy White has been commissioned to respond to the visual arts spectacle through movement, creating a dance piece titled Libertas, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The two artists have collaborated before, with Laura creating a short dance film, Spectrum, in response to Liz’s Our Spectral Vision, which was originally commissioned by the National History Museum in 2016. Libertas, which is available to watch both live and digitally this Saturday, aims to capture a sense of celebration and the same playful vibrancy found in the Hundreds and Thousands installation.

“I had previously worked alongside Liz West’s Our Spectral Vision exhibition at The Civic, Barnsley to create Spectrum, a short dance film,” recalls Laura. “The film was greatly received and was selected

by The Wilson Gallery in Cheltenham to be a part of Liz’s exhibition there last year, which unfortunately did not open to the public due to Covid-19.”

Excited by how other art forms could interact with her work, Liz was keen from the start to see how Hundreds and Thousands could be brought to life through dance. “She contacted me to see if I would like to create something to bring the work to life through movement and dance. Having worked previously in response to her installations I jumped at the opportunity,” says Laura.

Orchestrating the coming together of art and dance here is Kaia Charles, Culture Projects Manager at Greenwich Peninsula. “Hundreds and Thousands explores the subtle nuances of light, shade and colour reflection through transitional space. The work is really further enhanced through interactivity, so we realised early on the importance of commissioning

performative elements,” she says.

Even prior to creating work in response to Liz’s art installations, Laura has always used visual arts as a focal point for her work. “I am drawn to colour and shape; I think as dancers we are obsessed with form and dance is essentially moving art, so it lends itself well to a symbiotic relationship with visual arts,” she says.

“Even when I was training I created pieces in response to sculptures and installations; I remember creating a dynamic work inspired by Anish Kapoor’s Marsyas at Tate Modern.”

In order to create an appropriate physical response to Hundreds and Thousands Laura interviewed Liz to understand her wider intentions with the piece. “I wanted to delve deeper into her own

creative practice and thought process,” she reflects. “Visiting The Tide to see the installation was key for me too.

The work is so playful – it changes throughout the day and with every visit.”

Laura’s own creative practice was also influenced by the location. “The Tide’s amazing architecture meant I had the opportunity to place the dancers behind and within the work instead of having them simply dance in front of it,” she explains. “I wanted Liz’s work to be at the forefront and take centre stage while using dance and movement to engage and inspire the audience. In essence, the piece and the installation are one.”

Kaia believes both Liz’s art installation and Laura’s responding dance piece have the same core purpose. “The importance of this kind of accessible art and culture is in bringing our community and Londoners back together safely,” she says. “[This] cannot be underestimated and is at the heart of everything we do on Greenwich Peninsula. We hope people will feel uplifted by this bold and bright riverside experience.”

Laura, too, feels keenly her role in bringing people together again. “I’m looking forward to sharing Libertas, my live activation of the work, with the community. I know that with the current circumstances we are all eager to visit art galleries and theatres again.

This performance will give people the opportunity to experience both!” While galleries and theatres have now reopened

indoors, not everyone feels ready to set foot inside enclosed spaces again.

Outdoor cultural opportunities like this are therefore all the more welcome.

“Hundreds and Thousands is an incredibly uplifting piece of public art which will be even more powerful when paired with the Libertas performance,” says Kaia. “The piece itself, designed by Liz West, aims to provoke a heightened sensory awareness and creates an immersive, kaleidoscopic journey along the full 700 metres of The Tide.

When used as a backdrop to the dance performance from Libertas, an even more mesmerising experience can be enjoyed as the light bounces off both the multi-coloured reflective glass surfaces and the moving dancers.”

Laura agrees: “We need colour, we need celebration, we need to delve back into creative outlets and to be inspired again,” she says. “I hope Libertas inspires the audience to explore the installation further themselves; to sit, to lay down, to move and to play within it. I hope my piece encourages people to immerse themselves in a more physical way so that they, too, become part of the work, and leave with a sense of connection and joy.”

Stay safe as we enjoy hugs and pubs again in latest easing of restrictions Case Study

The latest easing of restrictions has brought joy to millions of us. We have been able to meet loved ones indoors, hug, organise celebrations, visit restaurants and book tickets for our favourite pastimes. But caution is still paramount. This is what we can do in England and how we can do so safely.

What can we do?

Groups of six or two households can now meet indoors. This is the first time since 2020 people from other households are allowed to meet in indoor settings and the first time individuals are allowed to be in close contact with family and friends, including hugging. Organised indoor adult group sport and exercises classes can resume.

Can I have a party?

Larger gatherings of up to 30 people for celebrations such as christenings and weddings in outdoor and COVID-secure indoor settings are allowed.

Where has reopened and what events resumed?

Indoor seating in restaurants, cinemas, bowling alleys, amusement arcades, indoor play areas, art galleries and museums have reopened. Hotels, hostels and B&B overnight stays are allowed for groups of up to six people or two households.

Large events including conferences, theatre, concert performances and sports events have resumed within

What are the rules for care homes?

Care home residents can have up to five regular visitors, with up to two visitors at one time or in a single day, in addition to their essential care giver. Residents leaving the home for a low risk visit no longer have to self-isolate for 14 days when they return.

What safety measures should we still be following?

Caution is the watchword. Remember Hands, Face, Space, Fresh Air. Wash your hands, wear face coverings and keep a two-metre distance in public spaces. Always let the fresh air in.

ELLIE TURNBULL, 27, RILLINGTON, NORTH YORKSHIRE

It will be third time lucky to celebrate their wedding in style for Ellie and Matthew.

The North Yorkshire couple have threeyear-old daughter Lola while Ellie, aged 27, is expecting their second child in June.

She and Matthew, 28, have been together for eight years. They got engaged three years ago and started saving immediately for their big day.

“We know weddings are expensive and we wanted to save enough money to have everything we wanted ... the day we dreamed of,” said Ellie.

The couple were due to marry at Hackness Grange hotel in May 2020

The ceremony was rearranged for October 2020 but restrictions meant that guests were limited to 15.

Rather than postpone again, they went ahead with just the ceremony.

“It was devastating,” said Ellie. “There was a lot of our family not allowed to come. Deciding who should be there was hard but that was the way it had to be.”

Disappointment has now turned to delight and excitement with Ellie and Matthew’s big day, including another ceremony, scheduled for October at the same venue.

Planned after the June 21 step 4 stage of the roadmap, they intend to invite 100 day guests, joined by 60 more for an evening party.

“It will now be the most exciting of days, absolutely awesome, really brilliant,” added Ellie.

500 years of royal portraits go on show at the National Maritime Museum It’s spent the last year in waiting, postponed because of the pandemic, but the National Maritime Museum’s new major exhibition Tudors to Windsors: British Royal Portraits has finally opened to the public. The exhibition features portraits of the kings and queens who have shaped British history over the past 500 years, bringing together works from the National Portrait Gallery and Royal Museums Greenwich as well as private collections. Over 150 portraits spanning five royal dynasties are on show, from Henry VII to Elizabeth II, writes Holly O’Mahony…

“Tudors to Windsors is a celebration of over 500 years of royal portraiture,” says Kris Martin, curator of the exhibition. “Through more than 100 works – paintings, sculpture, miniatures, photographs, prints, medals and postage stamps – the exhibition explores the development and dissemination of the royal image in Britain as statements of wealth, power, continuity and tradition, under the influence of the monarch’s personality and wider historical change.”

So, which royal faces will you be able to see? “Beginning with Henry VII, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the Tudors, Stuarts, Georgians, Victorians and Windsors, ending with our current queen,” reveals Kris.

Portraits to pore over include a beguiling painting of Anne Boleyn dating back to the 16th century; the ‘Ditchley portrait’ of Elizabeth I by Marcus Gheeraerts; Thomas Hawker’s 1680 depiction of Charles II; Queen Victoria by Sir George Hayter; and Bryan Organ’s 1980 study of a casual-looking Prince Charles.

“Every monarch is represented,” says Kris, whose personal highlights of the exhibition include one of the earliest

portraits of Henry VII by an unknown Ditch artist, dating back to around 1505. “It perfectly demonstrates the beginning of an English portrait tradition that captures true likeness,” he says. “We also have some iconic portraits that have become the defining image of particular kings and queens, including Holbein’s Henry VIII, and Allan Ramsay’s portraits of George III and his consort Queen Charlotte. There are some wonderful photographic portraits of Her Majesty the Queen by Dorothy Wilding (1952), Cecil Beaton (1953), Annie Leibovitz (2007) and Thomas Struth (2011).”

To make the exhibition well-rounded, Kris was keen for it to feature more than just paintings. “I wanted to expand the remit of the exhibition to consider the more everyday dissemination of the royal image,” he says, something he’s achieved through displaying coins, medals, prints and postage stamps alongside the artworks.

Articles of clothing worn by the monarchs feature too. “We are lucky to have secured the loan of a child’s suit of armour that was made by the Royal Armouries workshop here in Greenwich, probably for Edward VI, which is complemented in the ‘Victorians’ section of the exhibition by a little sailor suit from our own collection made for the five-year-old future Edward VII to wear on the Royal Yacht,” he says.

In the days before television, social media, and photography in newspapers and magazines, official portraits were as close as many

people got to knowing what their monarch looked like. As a result, the monarchy “have long exploited their ability to stage-manage their image in order to provide a statement of power, grandeur, wealth and majesty – or domesticity, motherhood or philanthropy,” points out Kris.

Among the artists whose portraits stare out from the walls are court painters Sir Peter Lely and Sir Godfrey Kneller, photographers Cecil Beaton and Annie Leibovitz, and pop artist Andy Warhol, whose work is also currently enjoying a major retrospective at Tate Modern.

Despite technological advances, portraiture continues to play an important role in shaping our opinions and understanding of the monarch.

“I hope that visitors to the exhibition will see how royal portraits have always been important in communicating a particular understanding of the monarch, influenced by political context, personality, fashion and gender,” says Kris. “I hope they will also see how portraits reflect the shift in power, role and perception of the British monarch; how we moved from rule to reign, from absolute monarchy to constitutional figurehead, and from guarded formality, power and grandeur to informality, domesticity and approachability,” he adds. “I also hope that visitors will see how even today there remains a role for the royal portrait that underlines the monarch’s dedication, reminds us of tradition and emphasises continuity.”

FLOW: a farm-to-fork market on Greenwich Peninsula A new farmers’ market, FLOW, has launched on Greenwich Peninsula.

The bi-weekly market champions local producers showcasing the best in sustainable, ethically-sourced produce. Perched on the edge of the river, FLOW should be a safe, breezy hub for the community to gather and shop locally this summer. Excitingly, the market has been curated in collaboration with design studio and multi-sensory experience specialists Bompas and Parr, which will be bringing a touch of its signature whimsical magic to an events programme of talks, crafts and music held at FLOW throughout the summer season. HOM: How long has FLOW been in the pipeline for?

KC: We have contemplated curating a farmers’ market here for some time – expanding on the artisanal food offering of our quarterly SAMPLE Market. We

worked with food enthusiasts and multidisciplinary studio Bompas and Parr to conceptualise FLOW during the lockdown, ready for residents to enjoy this year.

HOM: Among the traders you’re working with is an organic farmer, an artisan cheese business and a family bakery – so real farm-to-table producers. Was this intentional?

KC: We want Greenwich residents to be able to enjoy fresh, sustainable British produce on a regular basis. The selection of stalls at FLOW all offer this.

HOM: Tell us more about the stalls trading here...

KC: Big Wheel Cheese brings together a selection of the best of British cheeses, with raw milk cheeses, blue varieties and vegetarian options available.

Mary Mills Continuing our walk down Deptford Creek, we have walked south down Dreadnought Walk from the mouth of the Creek where it joins the Thames and then along Dowells Street past Waitrose. When you get to the point at which Dowells Street joins Norway Street you will see, on the other side of Norway Street, the Meridian Estate dating from the 1930s. Had you stood there in the 19th century you would have seen a factory. Although strictly speaking this site isn’t alongside the Creek it is certainly a Creekside industry and it is near enough to the waterside for its occupants to take advantage of the facilities the Creek offered for water transport.

In the 1820s we would have been looking at a small gas works on that site. We have already seen the Greenwich gas works of the Phoenix Company where the Creek meets the Thames to the north of where we are now, but this predates that and was the first gasworks in Greenwich.

The small gasworks stood on the east side of Norway Street from around 1823 to 1828. Speculators had approached the Greenwich Vestry suggesting they build this gas works and the resulting row escalated into a ‘writ of mandamus’ and the downfall of the ruling group in the vestry. I have written about this saga in some detail in the Greenwich Historical Society’s Journal and elsewhere.

The resulting small gas works was taken over by the Phoenix Gas Company within a year of construction and used by them while the larger riverside works to the north nearby was built. Phoenix seem to

have kept only the gasholder in use and by 1828 advertised it to rent - as “a valuable property at Greenwich near the river Ravensbourne with brick buildings and a lofty chimney suitable for an iron foundry or any trade requiring large premises”.

Originally and for some time it was leased to Mr Beneke – he was a German chemist and I will get to write a lot about him when I get to the Lewisham side of the Creek.

The site of the gas works was eventually sold to William Joyce in 1841. I wrote a whole article about him in Weekender in February 2019 – but perhaps had better re-cap a bit.

William Joyce was the son of Jeremiah Joyce –who in 1794 had been arrested for treason and incarcerated in the Tower of London on a charge of advocating Parliamentary reform, and who later became a Unitarian minister and the founder of early 19th century scientific

journals. William undertook an engineering apprenticeship and developed a ‘pendulous’ steam engine from 1834 when he was just 21. These engines were advertised for sale from 1835.

William spent a ‘large sum’ on ‘improvements’ to the old gas works site when he acquired it and added engineering, plate making and model departments, as well as a foundry and a high chimney. It was renamed the Greenwich Foundry and at first he manufactured mainly steam engines there. Some of these engines went to local firms– one, sold around 1843-4, went to Frank Hills for his new East Greenwich chemical works on the Greenwich Peninsula – I wrote about him in Weekender quite recently, back in March, but there is a lot more to hear about his activities when I get over to the Lewisham side of the Creek. When I get to the Lewisham side there will also be an article on John Bennett Lawes and his revolutionary super-phosphate factory – he also bought a steam engine from Joyce. Not all Joyce’s engines were sold locally - one went to a corn mill in Gloucester and a replacement crankshaft sent to them led to a change in the law on liability of carriers. Joyce also provided the machinery for a corn mill in Smyrna – and we can assume that there were many other contracts.

By the mid-1840s Joyce was manufacturing engines for river boats. Steam driven vessels were becoming important means of transport on the Thames and one of the companies ran the Halfpenny Fare steamers. Joyce supplied the engines for three of these – The Ant, The Bee and The Cricket. Sadly the Cricket‘s boiler exploded one morning in August 1847 while she was at Adelphi Pier and packed with passengers. The death toll was never finally agreed but was probably upwards of 30. At the subsequent enquiry both Joyce and his foreman, Thomas Meacham, gave evidence although there was no question that their equipment was faulty. It turned out that the engineer on the boat had wedged down some of the valves and then gone off without telling anyone what he had done. The Great Exhibition in 1851 gave Joyce a great showplace for his engines which were on display and reported on. One of his engines worked an ice making machine which produced the ices for sale in the Crystal Palace’s restaurant.

By the early 1850s Joyce was building ships and was also using Dreadnought Wharf with a frontage to the Thames in Thames Street to the north - and this article is just looking at his Norway Street works. However a ship under construction at Dreadnought led to a difficult court case in 1854 ad at the same time Joyce & Co were declared bankrupt and the assets of the yard sold. The purchaser was Thomas Meacham, Joyce’s site foreman, and he had bought it apparently using money which had been owed to him by Joyce.

They continued to build ships – the iron hulled Victor Emmanuel was built in early 1856.

Strangely it is described as beige built by Joyce & Co, ‘for themselves’ - whatever that implies. Later a Lloyd’s assessment apparently says the engine was removed and so she had been converted to a sailing ship. As a barque she was eventually wrecked off the Isle of

Wight ‘due to the obstinacy of the captain’.

William Joyce died very suddenly one morning in August 1856; he was only 42 and was buried at Nunhead. Thomas Meacham was the principal mourner and as owner of the site continued the work there. He renamed it as the ‘Victoria Foundry and worked on new designs.

In 1858 Meacham built the screw steamer Metropolis which included engines of ‘unusual design’. Metropolis was purpose built for use on passages to the Channel Islands and appears to have been successful. However she sank off the Hermitage Rocks off Jersey in 1861 when she hit the Rouaudiere Rock and was a total loss.

He also built a vessel called ‘The Connector’ in 1858. This was a boat built in three sections, each section itself was an individual boat which could be connected and disconnected in a matter of moments. She had a 10 hp engine with a single screw and was apparently used ‘for a considerable time’ on the coal trade run between London and north east England. It was thought the principle could be applied to canal boats ‘with great advantage’.

They also built a lighthouse in 1857. This still stands at Cape Point near Cape Town in South Africa and bears a plague telling of its origins in Greenwich. Over the years several Greenwich residents who have been in South Africa have sent Greenwich Industrial History Society pictures of the lighthouse and its plaque which tells us it was made in Greenwich. It was commissioned by the Board of Trade and designed by engineer Alexander Gordon, with lights by Deville. The cast iron sections were shipped from Greenwich to Simon’s Town and transferred to a smaller boat in which it was taken to Buffels Bay - where a modified gun carriage was used to haul it overland through difficult terrain to a camp from where a bullock-drawn sledge was used for the final leg of the journey. Deliveries of oil and food were only made once every three months, and in 1876 there was great difficulty in getting oil supplies to the lighthouse. It was in use from 1st May 1860 until it was extinguished during the First World War. The site is now a tourist attraction and museum, https://capepoint.co.za/about/ Thomas Meacham died in 1867 at his home at 1 Circus Street but already, from 1861 the foundry was in the hands of Joseph Francis Delany and J.Okes. Delaney had served an apprenticeship as a mechanical engineer under Willam Joyce and had stayed with the firm as naval architect and manager of the iron ship-building department. They built engines for steam-yacht “ Wolverene,” for Lieut.Col. Brandram which had been built by Stockwell and Lewis in Barking. Another vessel was the paddle steamer Ladyburn for which thye built the engines in 1866. She sprang a leak and foundered in the North Sea east of Friesland Netherlands while she was on a voyage from the Duchy of Holstein to London, with over 400 cattle on board.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) proposes to make the above-mentioned Orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49, 124 and Part IV of Schedule 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

The general effect of the Orders would be: a) to extend the double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restriction on the north side of Craigerne Road, outside No. 43, to a point opposite the common boundary of No. 43 and No. 45, replacing the current parking bay; b) to update the map tiles attached to The Greenwich (Free Parking Places, Loading Places and Waiting, Loading and Stopping Restrictions) Consolidation Order 2018 and The Greenwich (Charged-For Parking Places) Consolidation Order 2018 so as to reflect the provisions referred to in sub-paragraph (a) above.
