The Mayor’s 30 day challenge: Completed!

Did you ever look at the ant-like lines of blue jumpsuitclad daredevils scaling the O2 as part of a guided tour, thinking ‘I’ll do that one day’, only for the pandemic to come and take away your dreams? Well, Up at The O2 is back in business, offering small groups the chance to climb to the top and, from May 20, enjoy a series of ‘Thursday Lates’ on the roof.

Sing to a healthy life Trinity Laban is offering free singing sessions for Greenwich residents living with Parkinson’s, chronic pain or lung conditions.

The group meets once a week on Zoom, led by trained therapist James Moriarity, musical breath specialist Phoene Cave, and director of training for the Sing to Beat Parkinson’s network Nicola Wydenbach. Sessions begin with 15 minutes of chatting in breakout rooms to allow the group to get to know one another, followed by vocal warmups, breathing exercises and the main event: learning a well-known song together.

Kayak from Greenwich to Battersea Another outdoor activity up and running again is the London Kayak Company’s popular ‘kayak bus’, a chance to paddle up or down the Thames between Greenwich and Battersea. Pack your strongest muscles (and ideally a partner) – even with the tidal flow in your favour, this is three hours of physical labour – and look out for several of the city’s most notorious landmarks along the way, including Cutty Sark, Shakespeare’s Globe, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye. Shop locally at the Horniman Market While its museum and butterfly house remain off bounds, the Horniman Museum and Gardens continues to host a Sunday market, offering visitors the chance to shop directly from independent and local producers. Train alongside top dancers To celebrate its return to in-person rehearsals, Luca Silvestrini’s Protein dance company is inviting the local community to join the troupe in rehearsals on Fridays. Meet the husband and wife duo looking for an escape...

Going into business with your spouse naturally comes with its risks, but Yusuf and Aisha Chaudhri were well prepared. Both quick thinkers with a passion for fast-paced problem solving and teamwork, the pair travelled the length and breadth of the country to indulge their passion of playing escape room games, eventually deciding they could do a better job themselves, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Yusuf and Aisha, a management consultant and pharmacist respectively, set up Horror Escape in Peckham at the end of 2020 – a bold move in a year crippled by a global pandemic. Two of the five rooms planned – the cannibal-riddled ‘Cabin Fever’ and family-friendly ‘Escape from Wonderland’ – have opened intermittently to the public, with three further experiences – the ominous sounding ‘Murder Mansion’, intergelactic-set ‘Lost in Space’ and remote island-based ‘Primal Fear’ due to open towards

the end of 2021 and 2022.

The pair count themselves lucky to have kept their second jobs this year; a factor which has allowed them to continue paying rent on the site of their escape rooms and to retain their “brilliant” staff. But the year hasn’t been easy for the couple, who on top of everything else have recently become parents.

Focusing on what looks set to be a brighter future ahead, Yusuf and Aisha are now preparing to reopen the doors of Horror Escape on May 17.

Holly O’Mahony speaks to Yusuf Chaudhri to find out more about Peckham’s spookiest public attraction…

Holly O’Mahony: London is littered with escape room games, many based around similar themes.

What sets Horror Escape apart?

Yusuf Chaudhri: We’ve tried to add some really unique elements to our games which we thought players like ourselves would enjoy. There’s obviously our focus on the horror genre but we also

send out envelopes with items related to the story before and after the game, which expand the experience and vary depending on whether teams win or lose.

HOM: What made you decide on the horror theme?

YC: My wife and I are seasoned escape room players. Whilst we sometimes played the odd horrorthemed game, which was usually serial killer related, we found that there weren’t any escape room businesses that really specialised in horror-themed rooms and that prompted us to set up the business!

We are both horror movie enthusiasts and find that horror themes offer something really unique for players; they allow us to create immersive, detailed scenarios which transport players to another world.

HOM: You will eventually have five grizzly scenarios on offer.

Do you have a favourite?

YC: My favourite is definitely ‘Cabin Fever’ which is a game inspired

by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, where players start blindfolded and handcuffed, and have to escape a family of bloodthirsty cannibals.

We have had great feedback on the game since its opening with many of our customers describing it as a totally unique escape room experience. There are all sorts of hidden features and special effects integrated within the game.

HOM: You’ve helpfully ranked each game in terms of how hard and frightening it is, with Murder Mansion set to be the most difficult and chilling. How terrifying is it?

And what can visitors expect?

YC: Our Murder Mansion scenario is currently being built and is absolutely set to be our most thrilling and chilling scenario yet. The game places you in the role of a team of paranormal investigators tasked with finding the whereabouts of a missing person who seems to have been kidnapped by a demonic presence.

We have a whole range of spectacular special effects being built into this game including a ‘blood’ waterfall, moving statues and talking pictures.

Without giving too much away, the game involves travelling through a haunted mansion to try and find the whereabouts of this missing person, meeting all sorts of interesting and terrifying characters along the way. Think of it as a cross between Ghostbusters and The Exorcist! www.weekender.co.uk

ask for hints – the escape room games masters are there to make sure you have an enjoyable experience and don’t get frustrated being stuck on one puzzle. Thirdly, keep clues and puzzles organised – we normally recommend placing all keys and items in one location in the escape game so nothing gets overlooked. Lastly, make sure to communicate with your teammates – remember that escape rooms are team games and you’ll have to work together to survive!

HOM: What advice would you offer someone who is a little hesitant about playing?

YC: I would say to keep an open mind and give it a go, you might be surprised! We’d recommend giving your escape game of choice a call before you book to go through any questions you may have – most escape rooms in the UK can tailor their games to a certain extent based on your personal preference.

It’s also important to remember that you are never physically locked into any escape room in the UK; if you ever feel uncomfortable you are free to leave at any point.

HOM: Are any of the games suitable to play with children?

HOM: What are you enjoying most about running Horror Escape?

YC: We wouldn’t really recommend any of our games for anybody under the age of 13.

Our ‘Escape From Wonderland’ scenario is the most suitable scenario for young adults and we’ve had excellent reviews of the game from teams between the ages of 13-18.

HOM: For those new to the world of escape rooms, do you have any tips?

YC: The thing that brings us the greatest satisfaction is seeing people’s reactions – whether that be joy at escaping, fear from a jump scare or excitement at finding a hidden trapdoor – to the themes and puzzles that were once just ideas within our heads.

YC: I personally believe that all types of people can have fun and be good at escape room games – the key is having a variety of different perspectives and skills within your team. For starters, make sure you thoroughly search each of the rooms that form part of the game, as clues and items are usually hidden in all sorts of secret places. Secondly, don’t be afraid to

The Walking Tales: Blackheath’s new theatrical walking tours

Local theatre-maker and children’s entertainer Alexandria Anfield has launched a series of theatrical walking tours in Blackheath. Tailored to different age groups, The Walking Tales are a fun, engaging way to discover hidden treasures in the area and learn about the history which unfolded on your doorstep many years ago, writes Holly O’Mahony…

A children’s theatre specialist by trade, Alexandria was out of work as a result of the pandemic. At the same time, teachers and parents in her friendship circle were relaying how isolated the children in their care had become, with many previously confident children becoming shy and withdrawn.

For Alexandria, the mundanity of daily laps around Blackheath eventually gave way to imagination. “My brain started wandering and I began to wonder what Blackheath was like in the past. I discovered many fascinating stories,” she recalls.

The pandemic has overturned the way we live, forcing us to stay closer to home and, in extreme cases, to approach what would have previously been regarded as pedestrian interactions with a level

of apprehension. It’s forced us to spend more time than ever behind our screens and spend large chunks of the year at home indoors.

Alexandria realised she could put her storytelling skills to use locally, coaxing the community back to public spaces to experience live entertainment in a way that was safe. She launched The Walking Tales in March 2021, offering local tours that combine elements of interactive theatre with historical facts, personalising these depending on the ages of her audience.

There are five different tours in total.

The Tiniest Tale, aimed at ages 3 – 5, is a 30-minute tour packed with games and funny impressions. The Story Tale, for ages 6 – 11, sees little ones take on the role of detectives for 45 minutes of cracking riddles, solving quizzes and (hopefully) winning prizes. For big kids ages 12+, the hour-long Mystery Tale involves more challenging puzzle solving and relies on thinking outside the box, with screens strictly banned.

There’s a birthday tour too, which can be tailored for all age groups, and a soon-to-launch Late Tale for adults.

A challenge, Alexandria explains, has been deciding which aspects of history to include in each tour and how to link it all together. “[Another] thing was working out how long to tailor the walks to different age groups and what routes to take,” she explains.

“All the tales are slightly different and involve audience participation.

You will meet a real life character from the area and follow their footprints, stopping off at different historical points along the way,” reveals Alexandria. “Riddles and questions will be asked and rewarded with correct answers. I am working on new tales to add to the list so there is something for everyone; they all involve games, quizzes and getting those steps in,” she grins.

The business is a clever means for Alexandria to put her skills to good use while traditional performance venues remain closed, but she insists a project like this may have always been her calling. “I have always been

a pioneer of unconventional theatre that takes place outside the four walls of a building,” she reflects.

“I think that often there is an idea that history is confined to books and classrooms, whereas actually it is a living, breathing thing being made right now by people,” she adds. “History is telling interesting, different, crazy stories about people, exactly what you would expect when you go to the theatre.”

In order to ensure the experience is as safe as possible, Alexandria is restricting each tour to one household and herself for now. “As the restrictions ease, people will be able to ask friends to join them too,” she adds. “All the walks take place outside and any equipment for the games is thoroughly cleaned or single use.”

While participants are bound to pick up interesting facts about the local area, Alexandria insists the primary goal is for families to have a good time and get some exercise while having run. “There have been many Zoom calls this year where the conversation has only been about what we’re watching on tv that week – let’s have something new to talk about.”

Everything you need to know about the Queen’s House Dining Domes If you’ve walked the regal grounds of the Queen’s House recently, you will have spotted a series of globe-like structures dotted either side of the walkway. These are not a hangover from the Christmas period, which typically sees ‘igloos’ pop up outside restaurants in various scenic spots, but a three-week, bespoke dining concept offering bubbles of up to six the chance to dine overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the River Thames. The Dining Domes are currently only scheduled to run from May 7 – 31, but with lunch, dinner and afternoon tea sittings available, plus special menus for kids, you won’t want to miss them. Holly O’Mahony: The dining domes at the Queen's House will undoubtedly be a popular addition to the Greenwich scene this spring. How did the idea for them come about?

Claire Bastin: We were approached

by Glen Sutton at Eventist Group in January of this year. They managed the dining domes at Somerset House and Syon House, and following a sell-out season in December, Eventist was looking for an iconic south London venue to partner with for the spring season.

Queen’s House fit the bill perfectly as the views of both Greenwich Park and the City skyline provide an impressive backdrop for this memorable dining experience.

HOM: Has the Queen's House ever hosted a dining experience like this before? Or is this a novelty?

CB: The Queen’s House is available for private hire and our accredited caterers offer fine dining and reception hospitality. However, this is the first time we have offered fine dining in an outdoor setting.

HOM: That sounds delicious.

An afternoon tea will also be available, which seems especially appropriate given the formal backdrop of the location. What can diners expect from it?

HOM: The Dining Domes are open for lunch and dinner. What are some of the menu highlights we can look forward to?

CB: An indulgent but classic Royal Afternoon Tea has been curated to accompany the forthcoming Tudors to Windsors: British Royal Portraits exhibition at the National Maritime Museum. Guests can look forward to a smoked salmon and leek quiche, a trio of classic sandwiches, scones, a selection of

The lost world of the Angerstein Railway

Mary Mills As a heavily industrialised area Greenwich had its share perhaps more than a share - of private railway systems specific to particular factories and other industrial sites. Some of them were also connected to the main line railway – like the colossal network in the Royal Arsenal. There was also a small independent tramway and many factories which had their own internal systems unconnected to the outside world. There were also railways installed on a temporary basis for contractors on large sites. And of course there is a still extant industrial railway which once had many extensions to factories.

The Angerstein Railway lies between Greenwich and Charlton and was originally a private goods line running to the river from the tunnel under Blackheath. I wrote an article about it for Weekender which was published in May 2019. That article talked about the possible closure of the foot crossing which runs from Fairthorn Road to Westcombe Park Station – a subject on which there now appears to be complete silence. However the railway once had several branch lines running into the Greenwich Peninsula and into Charlton Riverside and I thought it might be an idea to look at some of them.

‘Angerstein’ – the name of the railway - originates with the romantic figure of John Julius Angerstein – a Russian financier with mysterious origins – maybe

the son of a Russian Empress and a British banker. Immensely rich, he built the Mycenae Road house, now used by the Steiner School, in 1774, and used it as his picture gallery. A century later his family owned most of the land between the river and the Dover Road and had enormous local influence. In 1850 his grandson John Angerstein must have seen the potential of this area – with across the river the new Victoria Dock and a railway connecting Blackheath and Charlton. In 1851 he planned a railway to run on his own land from a junction with the North Kent Railway to the riverside. Built on private land, there was no need for an Act of Parliament except for a bridge which would be needed to cross the Turnpike Road. It opened in 1852 and was immediately leased to the South Eastern Railway whose

successors managed it, bought it and have run it ever since. It runs on an embankment parallel with Tudor Lombard Wall and has remained entirely a goods line. It is currently either being resignalled or work on that is pending.

On old maps the line appears with up to fourteen branches fanning out to various works including Angerstein Wharf itself. In the 1980s two massive bridges were built to take the line across newly built Bugsby’s Way. In the 21st century it handled mainly aggregate arriving at what is now said to be the only railhead left on the river.

Angerstein Wharf is just round the corner from the Yacht Club. Maps from the 1870s show a network of six lines reaching the Riverside along with some buildings. The development of Angerstein Wharf has been described as “a catalyst for the area’s development... playing an important role in the transportation of many different types of goods including sand, ballast, coal and oil, 150 years of continuous operation”.

Originally Angerstein Wharf was used by the railway for general wharfage and transhipment but was later leased to Thames Metal.

They operated a scrap yard from which scrap metal was exported to Bilbao, having arrived here from

Hither Green Sidings via the Dartford Loop. The wharf is still in use by the aggregates industry and 2.5m tonnes of marine aggregates are imported here annually. Speciallydesigned ships dredge licensed areas of the sea beds for sand and gravel and once at the dock, a series of scoops and conveyor belts extract onshore, where it is graded. The site was taken over by Day Aggregates in 1993 - originally Day & Sons Ltd, they were a coal delivery company

set up during the Second World War and now, based in Brentford, they have depots all over the UK. Also here recently were Aggregates Industries, based at Bardon Hill in Leicestershire and at Bardon quarry.

Their products come to Angerstein wharf by rail. Nearby were Murphy Aggregates who have sourced seadredged aggregates since the 1950s.

Also on site are Cemex who operate an aggregate and cement facility.

and have operated in the UK since the 1940s on many different locations here. And finally there is Tarmac, said to be one of the largest ‘marine aggregate terminals’ in Europe.

In addition to the Wharf, at the point at which the railway leaves the public system is the Angerstein Triangle which was the site of The South Eastern Railway’s signal works. This is the area of an old chalk pit between the mouth of the tunnel from Blackheath and the junction with the line to Charlton. It closed in the 1980s and the site is now the police car pound.

There was once a network of branch lines fanning out to the east –now all gone – but they served some important works.

People will remember ‘The Airfix Building’ dominating the skyline with ‘AIRFIX’ in giant letters. This was built as the London County Council, Central Tram Repair Depot in 1911. It fronted onto Woolwich Road but was accessed from Felltram Way A.L.Coventry Fell was the Chief Officer of the London County Council Tramways.

It was connected to the Angerstein line from 1911. The buildings were later used

by Airfix and then demolished – reportedly for the value of the bricks. The site is now largely car parking as part of a trading estate. Some rails remained on site together with a turntable – are they still there?

William Christie & Co. Ltd (later Christie & Vesey Ltd), were Scottish timber importers who bought a 16 acre site from the South Eastern Railway in 1912 and remained for the next fifty years. They had four riverside berths and a junction with the Angerstein line slightly north of the tram depot. Their 1920s built wharf could take vessels of 5000 tons and is described as “one of the finest ferro-concrete piers of its type on the Thames”....“equipped on the most up-to-date lines” It handled “over 30,000 tons of sleepers and 30,000 tons of timber, deals and telegraph poles” as well as “coke, sand, slates, tiles, fullers earth” . The site is now in other use but the concrete jetty is still in place with a new jetty now stretching into the river.

Then there was G.A.Harvey Greenwich Metal Works, built in 1913. This large works fronted onto the Woolwich Road – the current site of Charlton Fire Station and a large surrounding area. Holmwood Villas led to their entrance. They moved here from Lewisham and made a large range of metal

objects including huge fractionating towers and perforated metals of all sorts. They too were connected to the Angerstein Line.

United Glass was said to be the largest glass works in Europe and was sited in Anchor and Hope Lane from 1919. It had an internal rail system and a connection from the Angerstein line. Sainsbury’s warehouse is now on site.

To the west were two big works. I wrote the other week about Redpath Brown – Riverside Steel Works, who moved to a site south of what was then Riverway in 1903. The site is listed as having a link to the Angerstein line and having its own internal sidings.

There is however no sign of this rail link on Ordnance maps and the line is shown as going past the steel works into the gas works.

And so - East Greenwich Gas Works. Like all large gas works this had a vast complex internal rail system. The works was also connected to the Angerstein Line, but this is not shown on 1890s maps and it seems likely the connection was not made until 1903. The line ran across the marsh on an embankment on the later boundary of the Redpath Brown works. It crossed what was then Marsh Lane, later Riverway, a few yards west of the Pilot Inn, on a bridge on which was a signal cabin. Today West Parkside runs slightly to the west of this embankment. The embankment and bridge remained in place long after the gas works had closed and in the 1990s was used by lorries accessing the Millennium Dome building site. It was then demolished. Anecdotally it seems likely that the gas works made little use of this rail link since all coal was delivered by collier vessels and by products often left by road. It seems only to have been used for occasional oil and tar carrying rolling stock.

To see the Angerstein line close up – from Westcombe Park Station take the footpath which runs across the 102M tunnel approach motorway on a bridge. At the far side on an embankment is a tiny isolated level crossing which can have hardly changed since the line opened in the 1850s.

Charlton family celebrate sixth annual Upbeats Walk

The Upbeats did their one-mile walk at The Valley

On Saturday 24 April, Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT’s) annual fundraiser for it’s Down’s syndrome team, the Charlton Upbeats, took place.

The money raised from this year’s walk will go directly back into the Upbeats programme, which includes trips to football tournaments across the country and residential stays.

The annual Upbeats Walk takes place every year, with fans taking to the streets to walk and raise money for the project.

Charlton Upbeat, William Ely, said:

This year, the Upbeats celebrated six years of the Upbeats Walk.

For the second year in a row, supporters walked a mile or more in their local area, in line with government guidance on Covid-19.

The Upbeats did their one-mile walk on the pitch at The Valley before playing an Upbeats all-stars game on the pitch, which was watched by Charlton Athletic first-team players and staff.

The Upbeats then cheered on the Charlton team as ball retrievers during their game against Peterborough United later that afternoon.

More than £16,000 including gift aid has been raised for the project so far, which is run entirely on voluntary donations.

Proposal to expand Willow Dene School Willow Dene School is a special school for children with a wide range of special educational needs and is part of the Compass Partnership of Schools.

Willow Dene School is consulting on a proposal to expand both primary and secondary provision, and to add a sixth form.

The proposal would add 112 new primary places at the current Swingate Lane site (phased over several years from 2022/23) and 152 new secondary places (including 72 sixth form places) on a new site on Hargood Road (the former site of Kidbrooke Park Primary School) (phased over several years from 2024).

Further information about the proposal is published on the school’s website (www.willowdene.greenwich.sch.uk) where there is also an online response form. An online meeting is being held on 20th May 2021 at 4pm regarding the Swingate Lane expansion (primary-phase) and on 25th May 2021 at 4pm regarding the Hargood Road expansion (secondary-phase) – please register for attendance via the online response form.

If the proposal progresses, there would be future consultations relating to planning applications at Swingate Lane and Hargood Road.

1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out sewer repairs.

2. The Order will come into operation on 17th May 2021 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 2 weeks. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, King George Street outside 97.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Crooms Hill, Cade Road, Hyde Vale and Vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
