A polar explorer shares her tales One for members of Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG), polar explorer Jade Hameister is discussing her incredible adventures documenting both poles and Greenland, and why it’s desperately important that the future of the polar regions is secured for younger generations. Jade was just 16 years old when she became the youngest person in history to complete the ‘polar hat-trick’, skiing to both the North and South poles and crossing Greenland.

Now 19, she’s joining RMG online from her home in Australia to share her experiences.

This event is suitable for members ages 7+.

Life in space explored on screen The Royal Observatory’s popular ‘Science in Science Fiction’ series is back with another episode. Audiences are encouraged to watch James Gunn’s 2006 directorial debut Slither, the movie he made before making it big with Guardians of the Galaxy, before tuning in for a talk lead by the Royal Observatory’s head of department Rob Edwards. In it, Edwards will explore the idea of panspermia – the possible spread of life through space – and the plausibility of Gunn’s frightening immortal alien entity, The Long One. Warning: strong stomachs will be required.

The Yoga Space offers riverside yoga and al fresco dining

What could be more mindful than practising your downward dog while gazing straight out over the River Thames? Woolwich-based wellness hub The Yoga Space has recently moved to a bigger location at Royal Arsenal Riverside. Here, the glass-walled studio faces out onto the river, while a new terrace offers yogis the chance to practise al fresco, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The studio is run by Royal Arsenal resident Dolores Kavanagh, a former psychotherapist. In late 2020, amid the pandemic, Dolores moved the company from its former studio at Gunnery Terrace to its new riverside location at Norton House, but the studio soon had to close its doors to comply with lockdown restrictions.

“There have been many moments when I haven’t felt so positive,” Dolores admits. “I’ve had to keep reminding myself that what we are experiencing now won’t last forever. However, what we’ve created during lockdown is so special that, even if there have been times when I have questioned what I’m doing during the pandemic, the outcome will be very positive.”

While the doors to her studio have been closed, Dolores moved her programme of classes online, simplifying the offering into four main categories: Yoga 1 (classes consistent with the slow, mindful flow of hatha yoga); Yoga II (sessions focused on more dynamic flow sequences, such as vinyasa); Yoga III (practices reserved for experienced practitioners) and Yin (a floor-based practice designed to relax muscles, improve energy and sharpen focus). All of which can now be enjoyed outside on the terrace.

“For me, teaching online has had its challenges in terms of feeling more exposed, however some of the other Yoga Space teachers have loved the experience,” she says.

adding that laughing with people, seeing familiar faces and spontaneity have been her favourite things about coming out of lockdown.

Special sessions are also available, including gong bath meditation, massages and talks on the philosophy of yoga. New mums can enroll on a five-week mum and baby course, while those recovering from an injury might look to sessions in reformer pilates.

“The feedback from the students has been very positive, particularly in terms of being able to see a group of familiar faces who they would normally see in person, week in and week out, even if it is on Zoom.”

“We have welcomed so many new students to yoga, who were hesitant at first, not knowing what to expect.

There are many stereotypes of yoga which can be very misleading,” she says. “The Yoga Space is a community yoga studio that welcomes everyone from beginners to more advanced students. Those that come as beginners have tended to stay for a very long time.”

Teaching outdoors is a new experience for Dolores. “We’re at the mercy of the weather,” she laughs.

“It’s no exaggeration when I say that I have become rather obsessed with the weather app.” For now, only a limited number of participants can join the classes in order to adhere to the two-metre distance rule between mats. “Students have really appreciated being able to practice outdoors and we are fortunate enough to have the most spectacular views of the River Thames,” she says,

Conscious of the threat the pandemic poses on people’s mental health, Dolores is keen to use the space to help the community reconnect after months of isolation. “Being better able to forge a strong sense of community is the main reason that we moved to our new space,” she says. “Yoga, Pilates, and Body work is invaluable for a sense of emotional wellbeing, which goes hand-in-hand with developing relationships and friendships. This is even more vital coming out of

lockdown as social isolation has had a huge impact on mental health.

To have access to a place where, if people so desire, to converse and interact is really important.”

The terrace also houses the café’s outdoor tables. Here, the community can enjoy healthy lunches, salads, juices and hot drinks from local small business Drury Tea & Coffee, all while overlooking the river.

As of May 17, Dolores will be able to host classes indoors again, but in this interim period, she’s offering local yogis the chance to book the studio for an hour-long slot for their own practice. Those who hire the space can form a group of up to six to practice indoors together.

“I am incredibly excited about the relaunch of the Yoga Space at Royal Arsenal Riverside. Hearing the buzz around the building, seeing the growth of the yoga and wellness community on my doorstep and finally being able to experience the dream as a reality has been fantastic.”

Greenwich Dance takes the moves outdoors With outdoor exercise classes allowed once more, Greenwich Dance has expanded its offering, supplementing its rich programme of online dance classes with a weekly series of outdoor dance walks. The series, Stride on Time, has hubs in Abbey Wood, Charlton, Middle Park and Woolwich, with up to 30 people allowed to join each session. Sessions are led

by Greenwich Dance teachers Lizzie Fort and Maria Ghoumrassi, and are an opportunity for people of all ages to come together in a local park to stretch, walk and chat face-to-face.

HOM: How do Stride on Time sessions typically play out? What can attendees expect from the walks?

MP: Those attending Stride on Time can expect a gentle walk around a local area, led by one of our dance teachers. Each session begins outside a local community centre with a warm-up followed by a walk with dance-inspired movement to help get the blood flowing. The classes will then end with a cool down and a chance to socialise with other participants in a safe, outdoor, socially-distanced setting.

HOM: Why is rediscovering the outdoors so important right now?

MP: As the weather begins to improve and the days get lighter, it is so important to get back outdoors, take a break from staring at the same four walls and re-watching everything on Netflix.

Getting out into the fresh air, and seeing nature turn spring into summer can do so much to raise the spirits and improve our general mood. Plus, it’s the most Covid-secure way to socialise while we’re still in the middle of the pandemic.

HOM: The sessions are taking place in various parks and green spaces across the borough. How

did you decide on the locations?

MP: Our work with the community is at the heart of all that we do at Greenwich Dance. Now that restrictions are starting to lift, we’re keen to get back out there and bring quality dance experiences to the people of Greenwich.

We’ve deliberately chosen to spread our walks across the borough, so whether you’re in Abbey Wood, Woolwich, Charlton or Middle Park, you have the chance to join in. You can mix it up and enjoy a green space you’ve not visited before, or try a new park each week.

We really just want to make our work as accessible as possible, so we’ve tried to make sure wherever you’re based in the borough you can still experience it.

HOM: You’re also offering family classes on Saturdays. How do these differ from regular sessions and what can attendees expect?

MP: Throughout lockdown, we’ve continued to deliver our parent and baby, and family classes online. For these new classes, our teachers suggested we bring the different age ranges together so that whole families could join in the fun, and parents could socialise regardless of

whether they had a baby, a toddler, an infant or a combination of ages in their care.

Taking place in the grounds of the beautiful Jacobean mansion Charlton House, the classes follow a similar pattern to the regular sessions but are specially adapted to include familyfriendly movement, as well as singing and storytelling to engage the children.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope participants get out of attending a Stride on Time session?

MP: These classes are less about dance and more about socialising in a gentle, safe and dance-inspired way. As we slowly emerge from what has been a terrible year for everyone, these classes will give the residents of Greenwich the chance to meet new people, stretch their muscles, and explore our wonderful green spaces.

History

Rich and varied barge history excised for Millennium Dome Mary Mills This series of articles has been moving north up the east side Peninsula looking at sites and industries along the Riverside.

It is now nearing Greenwich Yacht Club and soon after that the Charlton Boundary.

Roughly where the offices and entrance of the Ecology Centre are now was the site of Norton‘s Barge Yard.

I see that there is a block of flats near the riverside in John Harrison Way which is called ‘The Norton’ and I hope this is named after Norton’s Barge Yard.

When development started on the Peninsula I gave a huge list of names to the Council’s road names person, in the hope that some of the blocks of flats and roads being built could be named to reflect some of the people and businesses which were there in the past. I don’t know that very many were used – although in the area around John Harrison Way some sailing barge names have been used – Reminder is one. Anyway, it’s good to find that one barge builder on the Greenwich riverside may have been remembered - although I bet but no one who lives there has any idea who ‘Norton’ was or what he did.

I must also admit to knowing very little about Nortons myself. It closed down in the late 1960s. Most of what I know comes from conversations and articles

by Pat O’Driscoll who took a lot of photographs there in the 1950s. She also worked on sailing barges and has written extensively about them and their builders on the Thames and Medway.

Dick Norton and Fred Bayley

I have a copy of a plan of the part of the Greenwich riverside where Nortons had their works – but I don’t know the date of it. It shows separate sites for ‘R. Norton’, ‘Norton Bros’ and ‘Norton Junior’. In an article published in Bygone Kent (April 2005) Pat said that two brothers had started the business in 1902 and that they came from Tunbridge.

An undated photograph shows an elderly gent with white whiskers. The caption says that this is the original Richard Norton who first opened the yard. Dick Norton, who Pat O’Driscoll remembered, was his son. There also appears to have been a barge building family named Norton in Brightlingsea in the 19th century but I don’t know if they were connected. (https:// earthhome.tripod.com/nortons.html

Dolphin brand cement and bricks. She lasted until 1980 when she was broken up at Milton Creek, near Sittingbourne.

In 1907 he rebuilt a barge which had originally been called Empress and which had been built in Faversham in 1877 and damaged in a collision in the Thames. She was renamed Scudo when rebuilt. Finally, in 1916, he built a barge to be called Serb which was originally owned by R.W.Paul, the Ipswich based maltings and animal feed firm. She is said to have been used to load coal at Tilbury. In 1940 her owners were asked to help with the Dunkirk evacuations and she was towed to Ramsgate. However it turned out she was not needed and never actually went. She was later owned by Alfred Green and based in Hammersmith. She was wrecked off the North Foreland in 1954.

Richard Norton built three spritsail barges at Greenwich in the early 20th Century. In 1901 he built a barge called Scud, which was later owned by Charles Burley Ltd of Sittingbourne, who made

They were by then only engaged in repairs and maintenance work. There were couple of old lighters which were used to moor craft alongside and sometimes a vessel would moor up on the Dorman Long jetty slightly down river. Inland there was a wicket gate in a corrugated iron fence, behind which was the Redpath Brown and Dorman Long works and a tap for water. Nortons had two sheds by the riverside path. One of these was for storing tools and other useful things. It was tumbledown but the tools inside it were traditional and would be a treasure trove today. There were bins containing small pieces of iron work bolts, spikes and rings - and trunnells (also called tree nails). Dick Norton still had his original trunnel plate which he had used since he was a boy for making oak pegs. In the shed there were “blocks, leeboard hangings, chain by the fathom, iron round rod and square rod, and chaffcutter wheels’.

There were also workshop tools and a forge and a quenching bath. The woodworking tools were uncommon

and peculiar to the trade. Outside were the remains of old sailing barges like The Royal George which had been cut down on the River and beached. There were also pieces of old leeboards, masts, chains, anchors and so on.

The other shed was the home of the last employee at the yard. This was Fred and he had all sorts of bits and pieces which he had turned into furniture with a coal range for cooking and heating and water from the tap under the fence at Redpath Brown’s. For lighting there was an oil lamp. For getting about and doing some shopping he had a soapbox on wheels. Eventually he had a fall and was carried off to an old people’s home, whether he liked it or not.

Dick Norton retired in the 1960s and died in 1973 and gradually the site was cleared.

I can just about remember, when I first moved to Greenwich, the jumble of old sheds along the foreshore and a lot of interesting bits and pieces over the years. Greenwich Yacht Club had been in an adjacent shed-like building but later moved into what had been the Redpath Brown canteen. One day a member of the Yacht Club offered to take me along the riverside and show me the remains of Norton’s Yard. There wasn’t much to see - even the barge blocks parallel to the river had been removed. He showed me various lumps of wood and bits of fencing which could’ve been anything but which he said were part of the yard and I duly took photographs of them.

When the New Millennium Experience Company moved into the area they just cleared everything regardless of whether it might be interesting or not. Now there are flats everywhere inland and tidiness along the riverside. It’s all very boring. www.weekender.co.uk

Charlton men’s and women’s teams celebrate EFL Day of Action

Charlton Athletic’s Ronnie Schwartz and Charlton Athletic Women’s Karen Hills attended the event

Wednesday 14 April marked the annual English Football League (EFL) Day of Action, where community organisations from football clubs across the country celebrate the work they are doing in their local community.

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has been running a free Easter Camp for 8 to 16-year-olds who are eligible for Free School Meals.

The Easter Camp, delivered in the London Borough of Bexley for a week and then the Royal Borough of Greenwich, in partnership with both local authorities, provided a safe environment for young people to have fun, socialise and learn new skills.

Young people taking part were also provided with a healthy breakfast and a hot lunch each day.

Ardmore Construction and Subcontractors continued their support for CACT and feeding young people by contributing to funds to help provide free healthy breakfasts and lunches, a key part of the Easter Camp delivery model.

Newly-appointed Charlton Athletic Women Head Coach Karen Hills visited the Easter Camp at Eltham Hill School alongside men’s striker Ronnie Schwartz.

Karen and Ronnie observed the various activities on offer at

the camp, which included an educational workshop based around diversity, outdoor hockey and an arts and crafts session.

Speaking on the day, Karen Hills said: “We’ve been asked some really interesting questions. We went into a diversity education piece in which it was nice to hear lots of really good questions around different kinds of cultures. And having the opportunity to be in and around the kids, the environment and the community is really important for me.”

Ronnie Schwartz said: “It’s been a lovely day to see the kids out, it’s been a long time [for them] I think with Covid and difficult for the young kids, and it’s nice to see them with their friends.

“I’ve been to some camps in Denmark also and I think it’s good for them.”

George, a 14-year-old participant on the Easter Camp, said: “It was a good experience [to meet Karen and Ronnie] to get a perspective of someone on the pitch and a person managing a big football team.

“The Easter Camp has been fun: meeting new people, new experiences and all of that stuff.”

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) proposes to make the above-mentioned Orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49, 124 and Part IV of Schedule 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

The general effect of the Orders would be: (a) to replace 6 metres of the existing Zone E permit holders only bay on the southwest side of Glenhouse Road, outside No. 9, with a single yellow line ‘Mon-Fri 11am-12.30pm’ waiting restriction; (b) to replace 6 metres of the existing Zone WD permit holders only bay on the east side of Kingsman Street, outside No. 117, with a single yellow line ‘Mon-Fri 9am-5pm’ waiting restriction; (c) to replace 4 metres of the existing shared use Zone W permit holders and limited waiting bay on the south side of Coleraine Road, outside No. 57, with a single yellow line ‘Mon-Sat 9am-6.30pm’ waiting restriction; (d) to replace 5.1 metres of the existing Zone BK permit holders only bay on the north side of Kidbrooke Grove, outside No. 99, with a single yellow line ‘Mon-Fri 11am-12pm’ waiting restriction; (e) to replace 5.4 metres of the existing Zone KW residents and business permit holders only bay on the east side of Weigall Road, outside No. 14, with a single yellow line ‘Mon-Fri 1pm-3pm’ waiting restriction; and (f) to update the map tiles attached to The Greenwich (Free Parking Places, Loading Places and Waiting, Loading and Stopping Restrictions) Consolidation Order 2018 and The Greenwich (Charged-For Parking Places) Consolidation Order 2018 so as to reflect the provisions referred to in sub-paragraphs (a), (b), (c), (d) and (e) above.

Persons objecting to the proposed Orders should be aware that in view of current access to information legislation, this Council would be legally obliged to make any comments received in response to this notice, open to public inspection.

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) ALDERWOOD ROAD, SE9 PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER)

1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by A&E ELKINS LTD on behalf of Greenwich Council who need to carry out a sewer connection.

2. The Order will come into operation on 10th May 2021 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However, the works are expected to take 11 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading), in Alderwood Road outside 71-73.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Restons Crescent, Avery Hill Road & vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.

Walpole Estate playground freshened up The council has invested £2,500 to freshen up facilities at the playground on Walpole Estate, Woolwich, to encourage children and families to be more active.

The improvements, which were carried out during lockdown, include jet washing the whole area and repainting the lines of the sport pitch and play track.

The improvements were funded through Section 106 agreements which are monetary contributions from housing developers to help maintain or introduce facilities in the area they are building in to ensure there is adequate provision for residents.

More than 3,500 free meals handed out over Easter Break Not a single meal went spare this Easter as thousands of free lunches were offered to children across Royal Greenwich.

Sites across the borough handed out a total of 3,515 delicious grab-and-go lunches to school children through our holiday meal programme.

School holidays can be stressful for families who usually rely on free school meals during the week. That’s why the Royal Borough of Greenwich is committed to ensuring food is available to any child who needs it.

On top of offering tasty takeaway meals, families were given the option of taking home a fun-filled activity bag, brimming with equipment to keep them entertained during the holidays.

With help from Greenwich Leisure Ltd, volunteers hand-packed 600 bags that were given to families across the borough. They included bats, balls, cones, frisbees, and a swimming voucher.

Using a grant from the Department for Work and Pensions, the council also provided funding for families on low incomes that could be spent on food and utilities over the two-week break.

3,827 take and make boxes, packed with fresh ingredients and a recipe card, were also given to secondary school students and youth groups.
