As part of Shop Local, the Council will be launching a pilot retail directory-style website for the Plumstead area so that shoppers can find out who is open, contact details, opening hours and if services

In addition to supporting retailers to reopen the Council is also supporting hospitality businesses with the launch of Royal Greenwich Street Eats. They are places where you can enjoy food and drinks purchased from your favourite participating pubs and restaurants that will be popping-up around the borough.

Face masks and social distancing will still be mandatory in shops.

RMG takes the fun outdoors In this interim reopening period, in which the grounds surrounding the museum are welcoming visitors but its indoor gallery spaces remain closed, the National Maritime Museum is inviting families to enjoy maritime-themed fun outdoors. Look forward to games inspired by the museum’s collection, as well as chalked-up running tracks and hopscotch. You can also take on an eight-part sailor challenge, discovering how to use morse code and what terms like ‘port’ and ‘starboard’ mean along the way. The games are suitable for all ages and can be enjoyed on a drop-in basis.

Learn to draw like a pro Having spent years bringing the Borough of Greenwich to life on paper, award-winning illustrator Nick Ellwood is something of a local treasure – and he’s keen to share his drawing skills with you. While we’re still partially stuck at home, Nick is bringing his art classes to your living room. Open to just 12 participants per session, the classes are a chance to really hone your drawing skills. You’ll complete a series of practical assignments online, with Nick providing one-to-one support along the way.

Innovations are rife at Trinity Laban: here’s how the conservatoire is supporting the whole community While arts facilities across the country are scrambling to put together summer programmes of courses for pupils and performances for audiences, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance has a multi-winged additional focus: offering a leg-up to minority groups of the Greenwich community to ensure all have access to the arts, writes Holly O’Mahony…

In late 2020, Trinity Laban partnered with jazz talent agency Tomorrow’s Warriors to create the Jazz Hang, a programme encouraging young musicians from diverse backgrounds to play jazz.

A month later, the conservatoire announced a continual partnership with Black Lives in Music (BLiM), which will see the two organisations work together to actively improve the experience of young people of African and Caribbean heritages within jazz and classical music. Practically speaking, the partnership will see the conservatoire establish specific funding for students of African and Caribbean heritages; diversify and decolonise the curriculum programmed for performances; and increase engagement with schools in the boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham to encourage students from non-traditional backgrounds to explore the possibility of a career in music.

With March came two further announcements of support programmes: Trinity Laban would offer 20 free singing sessions for Greenwich residents living with Parkinson’s, while a new scheme, TL Ignite, would help boost the careers of emerging local artists.

“Our Singing for Parkinson’s programme has grown out of the success of our other initiatives that use singing as a way to improve mental and physical wellbeing,” says Flora Faith-

Kelly, Trinity Laban project coordinator for community and professional development. “We recently applied for funding from Greenwich Charitable Trust via METRO GAVS to grow our singing for good health programme and have now launched three free online groups specifically for Greenwich residents living with Parkinson’s, chronic pain or lung conditions,” she adds. The group is led by trained therapist James Moriarity and musical breath specialist Phoene Cave.

“We have seen how beneficial singing can be to help manage Parkinson’s symptoms. Research indicates that group singing leads to significant improvements in emotional wellbeing for those affected by the condition, including reducing anxiety and stress,” explains Flora, adding that the research also indicates that participants gain a greater understanding of breath control, enabling them to regain governance over vocal strength and volume.

“We recognise how valuable a sense of community is for those affected

by Parkinson’s and how helpful it can be to have time to come together – particularly during a time of isolation in this pandemic – and meet people with similar lived experiences.

Creating a space for connection and support has been important to us.”

Sessions, currently held on Zoom, are led by Nicola Wydenbach, director of training for the Sing to Beat Parkinson’s network. They begin with

15 minutes of chatting in breakout rooms of three or four participants, to allow the group to get to know one another. This is followed by vocal warmups, before Nicola leads the group through breathing exercises and learning a well-known song together.

Those curious about joining can get a taster of what’s in store from the Take Part at Home section of the Trinity Laban website, where videos detail what to expect from a Singing for Good Health class. “The classes are online and free, so we encourage you to pop in and get a feel for it.

There’s no expectation for you to stay if it’s not for you,” encourages Flora.

“We hope participants have fun learning some new songs and techniques, meeting new people, and making meaningful social connections. [We hope they] feel better for having taken part in these classes and strengthened their voices,” she concludes.

Meanwhile, Trinity Laban’s new TL Ignite initiative will provide 24 one-off grants of £750 plus professional support to south-east London creatives in the first five years of their career. Financed by the Higher Education Innovation Fund, the scheme is open to dance, music and musical theatre artists over the age of 18 living in Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich and Southwark.

“We wanted to continue to develop our relationship with the local community as the cultural industry continues to adapt to the ongoing effects of the crisis,” say TL Ignite Co-Founders Lucy Nicholson and Joe Townsend. “We also wanted to draw on our experience of running our annual TL Innovation Award, which provides a financial award and mentoring to final year undergraduate students from across the conservatoire to support a business or career development project.”

Singing for Parkinsons

For Lucy, Joe and the team at Trinity Laban, supporting early career artists is particularly important because, as they see it, the future of the arts sits in their hands. “Performing artists have been hit hard by Covid-19. With theatres and other venues closed, and tours cancelled, there has been a lack of traditional performance opportunities,” they point out. “Artists have had to quickly pivot to working digitally and figure out how to monetise digital work as they try to find new ways to create and share their art, and keep their audiences engaged.”

On top of this, many artists are geographically distanced from their collaborators and don’t have access to rehearsal or studio space. “For emerging artists who may not have had the chance to build a reputation or following, or invest in tech and professional development needed to adapt, it will be particularly hard to establish themselves in this changed environment,” add the pair. “By offering grants and bespoke professional development opportunities, we hope to offer support to emerging artists so they can establish sustainable careers as the cultural industries get back on their feet.”

With a total of 24 grants available, the conservatoire is hoping to attract applicants from a wide range of backgrounds, with Lucy and Joe specifying that they should be

“tenacious, committed to developing their creative career [and] interested in connecting with other local artists to form a community of support.”

They add: “These artists will be keen to be involved in shaping the arts in post-pandemic recovery, both socially and economically, and can understand and articulate the wider impact of their work.”

In addition to the financial and professional support offered to the chosen artists, TL Ignite will see the conservatoire share its digital channels with the artists, offering them a platform to show their work to new audiences.

“We want to connect recipients to a network of supportive local artists that will enable peer learning,” explain Lucy and Joe. By supporting recipients’ career-planning skills, we hope to develop their confidence in taking charge of their creative vision so they feel more resilient and motivated, and can be creative changemakers in the new arts economy,” they add – a sentiment many of us could benefit from as we emerge from lockdown and look towards our futures.

Walks on Greenwich Peninsula have been a more colourful affair of late, thanks to Liz West’s Hundreds and Thousands installation. The artwork has wrapped the Tide walkway’s glass balustrades in 700 meters of multicoloured ribbons which, when reacting to the shifting light, offer a subtle visual commentary on the transition of the seasons.The installation was due to go live back in January, but was postponed until late March because of the third lockdown.

Holly O’Mahony speaks to Liz West to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: How would you describe your style as an artist?

Liz West: I create vivid environments that mix luminous colour and radiant light. Working across a variety of mediums, I aim to provoke a heightened sensory awareness in the viewer through my works.

I am interested in exploring how sensory phenomena can invoke psychological and physical responses that tap into our individual deeply entrenched relationships to colour.

My investigations into the relationship between colour and light is often realised through an engagement between materiality and a given site.

HOM: How do these ideas manifest in the real world?

LW: Within physical and architectural spaces, I use colour and light as a

material that radiates outside of its boundaries and containers. I playfully refract light through using translucent, transparent or reflective materials, directing the flow of natural and artificial illuminations. Our understanding of colour can only be realised through the presence of light.

By playing and adjusting colour, I bring out the intensity and composition of my spatial arrangements. These ephemeral interventions forge new spaces and environments, by flooding a physical site with a rich mixture of light and colour.

HOM: How did you come to work with Greenwich Peninsula on creating a large-scale installation for the Tide walkway?

LW: I was invited to propose a new work for The Tide around 18 months ago. After site visits, studying

photos, making sketches and time spent thinking about the geography, architecture and usage of the space, I fell in love with an idea of using the many metres of pre-existing glass balustrades on the Tide as my canvas. I wanted to create a work using optically clear coloured vinyl which would seamlessly wrap itself around the entire space making an immersive encounter for visitors.

HOM: What inspired Hundreds and Thousands specifically? And what made you decide to use the materials and shades you've gone with?

LW: Hundreds and Thousands was initially derived from a series of drawings based on the individual human experience of encountering colour. My experiments in colour mixing and blending are influenced by the colour theory of Josef Albers.

Albers' work led me to focus on the interaction of colours as well as creating careful compositions and spatial balance between geometric elements such as gridded or striped arrangements. Hundreds and Thousands also pays homage to the Tide’s geography and proximity to the Greenwich meridian line, behaving as a sundial, allowing people to see the changing light depending on the time of day and season.

HOM: How did you settle on the title Hundreds and Thousands, which

will make many think of a certain multicoloured cake topping?

LW: The title refers to the literal amount of triangular forms in the artwork and also pays homage to the sensory luminescence and visual giddiness of the coloured sugar strands we were all familiar with as children. The repeated pattern of jewel-like colours in the work encourage your eye and body to follow the work around the space on a visual journey from Peninsula Square to the river. The clarity of the coloured material reflects people and their surroundings, encouraging and promoting movement around the Tide and making a work that feels like it ‘belongs’. Selected colours and repeated visuals have been used to augment and enhance the space and visitor experience.

HOM: The installation is described as being interested in the shifting light as we transition through the seasons.

Has this message been affected by the delay in getting the installation live as a result of the lockdown?

LW: As someone who suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder, I know only too well how the dark winter can cause low moods and therefore how bright, luminous colours and light can have a positive impact on our wellbeing and outlook. The change of seasons is an important

transition within our calendar; I hope that within my work I divert people's attention to the longer days and the changing light through the use of reflective coloured materials. Being installed at the beginning of spring and after a very difficult 12 months, the optimistic and vibrant Hundreds and Thousands couldn't come at a more appropriate time, when most people in the northern hemisphere are desperately in need of an metaphorical and physical injection of Vitamin D. HOM: What do you hope members of the public take away from seeing the installation?

LW: I hope Hundreds and Thousands encourages positive memories associated with colour and the effects of light on a person, heightening the viewer’s own experience within the space. The large-scale installation creates an opportunity for exploration, intrigue and a space to dwell on the impact of colour. The interplay between the coloured optical panels and the light will create a dynamic environment that should hopefully be inviting and memorable.

Five gorgeous terraces to dine on this week As of Monday April 12, restaurants are once again allowed to serve groups of up to six customers dining together outdoors. History

The mysterious East Lodge and the reprobate Jamet Hewes

Mary Mills When the East Greenwich tide mill was built there also seems to have been a ‘big’ building which was later called East Lodge. It stood at the end of what was once called Marsh Lane and later called Riverway - which is the road where the Pilot Inn stands. This road went down to the river until 1999, when the New Millennium Experience Co. closed off the river access. Today its site lies under the flats which have been built between the Pilot and the River.

There is an element of mystery about this house. We have some pictures of it as it stood in the late 19th – but was it rebuilt? The house in these pictures doesn’t look like one built in the 1790s.

There are also several unsubstantiated stories of an earlier structure which was under East Lodge. This is about vaulted cellars and a passageway which led out towards the road. In 1932 Anne Davies, who lived there as a girl, recalled in a letter to the Kentish Mercury cellars ‘like those at the College’. A number of ex-residents of Riverway recalled these cellars and passages. Mr. Bridgeman, who was brought up in a coffee shop at the end of the terrace, remembered an underground passage which ran to where East Lodge once stood.

I tried to get archaeologists to take an interest in these stories but – of course I was ignored

and it was all dug up and built on with no one bothering to look.

The mill was built by George Russell and what has also resisted explanation is a newspaper report from 1796 which describes a robbery ‘at Mr. Russell’s house …. which was entered by 12 men who bound everyone in the house with cords and carried off furniture, wearing apparel and plate’ … they then went into a boat ‘and put off for the other shore’.

In the 1820s Russell’s widow is described as having once lived at ‘Mill Place, East Greenwich. Now there is no trace on any other part of the

Greenwich Riverside of a house owned by a Mr. Russell, or of a Mill Place and no house is shown near the tide mill on maps, so this is a complete mystery.

East Lodge was, however, probably the house built as part of George Russell’s estate slightly down river of the tide mill. It is mentioned in documents on George Russell’s estate and legacies, including a Chancery assessment which lists two houses. One is The Mill House, where William Johnson, the mill designer, lived and another where Thomas Taylor, the foreman, lived.

A few years later when repair work was being done John Hall’s foreman was living in ‘the big house’ on site.

However, Anne Davies, in her 1932 interview in the Mercury, said that East Lodge had been built by a Mr. Hewes, who was apparently ‘rather a reprobate’. She described how on Sunday evenings he sat on a window sill of the ‘upstairs ballroom’, dangling his legs outside and blowing a horn to disturb the service held in the Thames Church Mission. It appears that in 1845 a house there was let to a Jamet Thomas Hewes. Did he build a new house here – or rebuild an older one?

Jamet Hewes was the son of a

distinguished millwright and civil engineer, Thomas Cheek Hewes. He was supposed to have trained as a doctor in Edinburgh but somehow didn’t qualify. He had however sufficient means inherited from his father, who died when he was in his early 20s. The money was however to be administered by trustees for his whole lifetime – which probably indicates something of how his father viewed his level of responsibility. There are a lot of things about Jamet Hewes which don’t make a lot of sense.

By the time Jamet Hewes moved to East Lodge he was Commodore of the Arundel Yacht Club – undoubtedly an expensive hobby. He was donating pieces of silver plate to the winners of yacht races between Greenwich, Gravesend, Erith and elsewhere. He had his own yacht and also a ‘cutter’. In 1845 he oversaw a change of name to the ‘London Yacht Club’ ’and East Lodge is then described both as ‘the residence of the Commodore’ and ‘Club House’. It may be from this time that some of the fancy decorations at East Lodge originate, as noted by Ann Davies and her sisters. ‘The hall was paved with large squares of black and white marble and its ceiling was painted

by Sir James Thornhill… after the style of the Painted Hall’. Of course Thornhill had died in 1734, so he couldn’t have been the artist, but the ballroom was clearly pretty fancy.

Jamet was also working at this time as a Professor of Animal Magnetism ‘to insure relief to those deemed incurable’..

Jamet seems to have had a number of liaisons during this time, with young women to whom he may or may not have been married. For example one of them said, when asked, ‘there was a clergyman in the room who read something out of a book but she couldn’t recall what it was that he said.’ However she had concluded she was married to him because his mother was always very nice to her. Later in a long and tangled court case there were some accusations of forgery against him about the registration of the birth of a child, for which someone else went to jail. There were other children . In another complex case ‘he had entertained the foolish idea of substituting a boy child instead of the girl’. He had also been ‘an enormous drinker in his time’. Well that figures!

History By that time his connections with East Lodge were in the past and he was living in Camberwell with a Henrietta Pimm – and she was quite clear that she wasn’t married to him. His death was followed by a court case on the inheritance of his father’s fortune by one of his possible children.

In the late 1870s East Lodge became company housing for Frank Hills’ works manager, Thomas Davies. His three daughters wrote and circulated a family newsletter about their lives, the family and their holidays. They remembered Christmas parties, walks down the lane, and honey for tea, meadows with buttercups, larks and pink and white hawthorn. They loved the garden overlooking the river, the shrubbery, the swing, and the summer house. They never mentioned the adjacent chemical works, or Cory’s Atlas coal transshipment hulk out in the River. As serious young women they organised improving lectures and concerts above the local shop. They wrote about their lives at East Lodge when they were old ladies in the 1930s.

The house was demolished at the start of the twentieth century, and the site became part of the Redpath Brown structural steel works. Greenwich Yacht Club had been in a number of riverside huts and temporary buildings and when the steel works closed they moved into the old canteen, unaware of a previous club house which was once nearby.

In the 1990s New Millennium Experience closed the riverway and cut it off from the river. They demolished the old buildings from the steel works and built a super new Yacht Club downriver at Peartree Wharf. They demolished the Causeway into the river and the Redpath Brown Jetty. (I ought sometime to write about the jetty, and Kenny, and his stand against demolition!).

Now it is very difficult to work out where East Lodge stood as new flats and shops were built irrespective of the old site boundaries.

One year of the Royal Greenwich Community Hub

Saturday 27 March marked one year since the Royal Greenwich Community Hub went live. The Community Hub is commissioned by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and delivered by Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) in partnership with local organisations to support vulnerable residents during the pandemic.

One year on from the creation of the Hub, a total of 248,819 calls were received. A number of services were made available via the Hub for Royal Greenwich residents in need; including prescription collection, emergency food boxes and special food shopping.

The Royal Greenwich Community Hub was built on the infrastructure of the existing Live Well Greenwich service, which enabled the Hub to provide significant services to support the clinically vulnerable and shielding residents.

Working closely with local organisations and volunteers, 979 emergency food boxes were delivered to residents who were in urgent need.

1,422 prescriptions were collected and delivered by the Hub for residents who were not able to leave the house for reasons such as shielding, isolation and more.

Deb Browne, CACT’s Head of Health Improvement said: “I know I speak on behalf of the whole team when I say this that it has been a privilege for us to be able to deliver the Hub and I’d like to say a very big thank you to all the staff, volunteers and stakeholders that made it possible.

“It’s impossible to name all the amazing organisations who came together to assist with the delivery of the Community Hub, it was such an amazing team effort and I am so proud that we could be part of it.”

Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich said: “The Royal Greenwich Community Hub is an incredibly valuable resource for residents who need additional support during the pandemic, which has thrown up numerous new challenges for so many.

“Since the Hub launched a year ago, over 2,000 local people volunteered to help others across the borough to access food, receive medicines, experience greater social interaction and much more.

“The Hub had 16,040 referrals in its first year, so I’d like to thank everyone who has shown enormous community spirit by thinking beyond themselves and volunteering to do what they can to support their fellow residents during this extremely difficult time.”

Another service made available via the Community Hub was the Befriending telephone line where staff and volunteers would call residents on a weekly basis just to have a chat, to ensure social isolation was kept to a minimum during lockdown. 473 residents in Royal Greenwich were supported with the Befriending line throughout the pandemic.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, the Slip road from Greenwich High Road into Greenwich south street.

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) [Ravine Grove] PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out road repair works.

2. The Order will come into operation on 21st April 2021 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 2 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading), in Ravine Grove at the junction of The Slade.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via The Slade, Sutcliffe Road and Vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

The Scheme also provides for the payment of travelling, subsistence and dependents' carers' allowances where out of pocket expenses are incurred in carrying out official duties.
