Safety for all women The Royal Borough of Greenwich stands in solidarity with the survivors of male violence and we're committed to making sure that our community is a safe place for all women.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen an outpouring of pain, sadness and anger from countless women and people of marginalised genders, bravely sharing their experiences of harassment, abuse and violence at the hands of men.

We held a virtual event on Friday 19 March to hear from local women about their experiences and safety concerns in the borough. We also launched an online survey which will be used to help shape the way the Royal Borough of Greenwich responds to gender-based violence.

We know that reliving experiences of violence, harassment and abuse can be traumatic, but sharing your suggestions can help us improve our services and support systems.

Virtual street art tour

Storytelling can be a form of real-world magic, transporting listeners to other cities, countries or worlds, while offering the chance to step inside the minds of different characters, viewing the world through their eyes. Global Fusion Music & Arts is hosting free weekly storytelling sessions on Zoom for little ones aged upwards of four. Science In Science Fiction: Royal Observatory Greenwich takes its popular Sci-Fi film series online

Once upon a time, the Royal Observatory was able to attract a whole new audience with its Silver Screen Sci-Fi series. The events invited audiences to the Observatory to watch a science fiction film then listen to talk, delivered by one of the venue’s resident astronomers, separating science fact from fiction. These popular evening events had been postponed since the pandemic began, but now the team have reimagined the series for the virtual sphere, under the new name ‘Science in Science Fiction’. Here, audiences are invited to watch a particular science fiction film in advance, before joining a Zoom talk in which an astronomer picks apart the movie’s portrayal of space matters. Up next, on March 26, is an evening dedicated to 1996 hit Star Trek: First Contact. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Royal Observatory astronomer Greg Brown to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Your Science in Science Fiction series is a virtual replacement of your former Silver Screen Sci-Fi series at the Royal Observatory. Tell us about the process of recreating the events for an online audience.

Greg Brown: We used to run a

screening of a movie followed by a short talk on a science subject covered by the movie. With our shift to online events, the movie screening became impractical so instead we made the talk the focus of the evening. Many of the astronomers here love science-fiction, and regardless, there’s loads of science,

good and bad, hidden within the genre. With plenty to talk about and a vast array of different films to discuss, there was real potential for a running series of short talks. The events allow us to help audiences separate the science-fact from the science-fiction, while giving plenty of room to be enthused about even the

more inaccurate parts of the genre.

HOM: Practically speaking, what format will the events take?

GB: The events are an hour long, and take the form of a talk from one of our astronomers on the film and a few science topics within it, followed by the chance for audience members to ask the astronomer any questions that have come up along the way.

HOM: So will attendees have to get a copy of the movie and watch it in advance?

GB: There’s no need to have watched any of the films beforehand, though we do recommend it as inevitably there are spoilers abound in talks like this, not to mention that the films we choose are great, or at least fun, to watch!

HOM: The focus of your next movie night, on Friday March 26, is Jonathan Frakes’ Star Trek: First Contact. What made you choose it?

GB: It’s been 55 years since Star Trek first graced our screens, and it has recently been going through

something of a revival with TV remakes Discovery (2017), Picard and Lower Decks (both released in 2020). Star Trek is one of the best-known and arguably greatest of the space operas – a future for a version of humanity that suffered terrible loss and destruction at their own hands, before coming out of it within a hair’s breadth from a utopian society. It’s a future of hope and optimism, that while not perfect, isn’t too far away from there. The film that perhaps best portrays Star Trek’s philosophies, while also being the film that centres on the events that leads humanity out of the dark and into space, is First Contact. Plus, it has time travel, warp drive and cyborgs! What more could you want?

HOM: Beyond Star Trek, which films in the Science in Science Fiction series are you particularly excited to discuss with home viewers?

GB: We’ve already held a show on what is possibly the best time travel story of all time, Back To The Future, and offered a view of a dystopian post-apocalyptia held in a computer simulation in our event on The Matrix. We’ve even had a www.weekender.co.uk

The films that our astronomers pick are always entertaining and their takes on the subjects found within might not always be what you expect, but you’ll definitely know more coming out than going in.

Of course, by this point you would likely have been torn to shreds by the black hole’s intense gravity, but that’s really not important.

HOM: Can you give us a particular example of a time when the science of space proved stranger than some of the fiction made about it?

GB: Of course, we hope that the audience will leave the show knowing a little more about the science of the films they watch, and perhaps be able to spot when sci-fi goes ‘wrong’ with its science. But far more importantly, we’d love to add to the audience’s enthusiasm for science and the fiction that goes along with it – for them to see that our universe can be just as incredible as fantasy, and sometimes even more so. Also, that there’s nothing wrong with science-fiction taking liberties with its science for the purposes of fun – just so long as the creators don’t mind us astronomers ripping it to pieces with pedantry after the fact!

GB: Perhaps the best example I can think of has to do with the science of black holes. When Einstein came up with his theories of relativity, it challenged the idea that time and space are immutable and unchanging, an idea that went all the way back to Newton. Now we know that space can bend and stretch, and time along with it.

Get too close to a black hole and time will begin to slow down.

Unlike in most science fiction films, where the action slows down and the characters are aware something weird is going on, in reality, you actually wouldn’t notice anything, unless you looked away from the black hole. Time would feel like it was moving perfectly normally and your wristwatch would continue to count off seconds at the rate you were familiar with. But gaze back the way you came and you would see the rest of the universe flashing by, while you would appear to the rest of the universe to be frozen on the edge of the abyss.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope the viewers take away from attending one of the talks in the series?

Meet the Greenwich pub owner pouring pints on local doorsteps

Between the global pandemic, national lockdowns and resulting shutdown of the hospitality sector, it’s safe to say that 2020 was not the year to open a pub. Yet that is what Col Brennan, the former landlord of Clapham pub The Coach and Horses, did in taking on and renovating beloved Greenwich pub The Crown, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Col was able to open the refurbished pub for just three months between lockdowns one and two – barely enough time for it to bed into the local community – before he was forced to close its doors again.

“Taking on a new pub in the middle of a pandemic definitely was a brave move,” chuckles Col when we speak. “No one really knew how our country’s response against Covid-19 would play out. Or how long, for that matter, hospitality businesses would need to face closures.”

you can imagine, it’s not been the easiest of openings for us,” says Col, wryly. Instead of fretting over the rocky start, Col has used the second and third lockdowns to give the pub a thorough makeover. “The pub is now looking fantastic, and I really cannot wait to show it off to everyone in the coming months,” he says.

Col was already a fan of The Crown pub before taking it on. “It has the most fantastic traditional glass back bar, and a delightful sun trap of a garden,” he says, wistfully. “This, married with a great location and customer base, is the perfect recipe for the ultimate community pub – something I am truly passionate about delivering to the people of Greenwich.”

Unlike the last lockdown, pubs have not even been allowed to open for takeaways during this third stint of closures, forcing many to lose thousands of pounds worth of stock.

Enter Jack Doolan, the brains behind Flight Case Bars, a company acting as a middle man, purchasing alcohol stock from pubs and delivering it to homes across the capital. Col was introduced to Jack by a fellow pub landlord and together, the pair have worked to ship the surplus stock of The Crown and other UK pubs directly to customers’ homes while the venues have been unable to open.

In normal times, the newly reopened pub could have been an instant hit.

But these were not normal times. “As

available too. The concept involves a mobile draught system being built into the flight cases. Customers book online and are given an arrival time slot for when their drinks will arrive.

Col was introduced to Jack by the owner of The Crown’s sister pub, The Chandos in Brockley. “I loved the concept. It makes perfect sense to buy the beer that pubs would have otherwise poured down the drain, and sell it on to people,” he says.

“We loaded up all of our beer onto Jacks vans and started delivering it, along with beer bought from other pubs, from all over the country.”

While born out of necessity, Col has found the experience of delivering the beer to people’s homes extremely rewarding. “It’s given me the opportunity to get out into the community and talk to people,” he beams. “There’s been lots of comparing of lockdown stories and coping mechanisms.

the monotony for a lot of people, myself included,” he says, referencing Valentine’s Day surprises, birthdays and after-work treats are some of the occasions he’s been booked for.

Now, Col is turning his full attention to the “re-re-opening” of The Crown.

“We will be following the government’s

roadmap for hospitality, opening for takeaway as well as opening our beer garden from April 12, with a view to being fully open inside and out by May 17,” he reveals. “It’s exciting this time around for two reasons: firstly, there genuinely seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. Secondly, the refurbishment of The Crown is

Donkin and the East Greenwich tide mill

Some years ago – right back in 2013/4 - I kept getting emails from a woman in Derbyshire - Maureen. She was on about the engineer, Bryan Donkin, and how he had done some work on a Greenwich tide mill. She thought the mill was the Old Flood Mill at Deptford Bridge, about which I knew very little. So I didn’t take a lot of notice of her but pointed her in the direction of some Deptford based historians.

I was however interested in Bryan Donkin. I was researching Joshua Taylor Beale – whom I wrote about here a few months ago. His very important exhauster patent had been sold to the Donkin family company, so there were links here which might be important. Maureen was involved in the archive for the great Donkin factory in Chesterfield, which was eventually closed in 2018.

Bryan Donkin had set up his engineering works in Spa Road, Bermondsey in 1803. He had previously done an engineering apprenticeship with John Hall of Dartford – yes, that’s John Hall whom I mentioned last week, whose firm were employing Richard Trevithick when he died. Donkin’s work in Bermondsey is famous for a number of important innovations

– tinned foods, paper made in continuous rolls, pen nibs and very, very much more and it included water wheels. After his death the firm remained in the family and in 1903 moved to Chesterfield where it continued successfully. Much of that success rested on the Beale exhauster, invented in Greenwich.

Maureen was part of a group of people attempting to put together the history of the Donkin Company.

She was fine with the firm’s preChesterfield roots but some contributors to the reminiscence website seemed put out to discover the firm had originated in Bermondsey ‘that seems to be somewhere in London, so it must be wrong’ they speculated. It was only when she mentioned John Lloyd as the builder of the mill that I realised that she wasn’t after the mill at Deptford Bridge but the East Greenwich Tide Mill – and which I have written about over the past two weeks.

So, a couple of years later I was at the Derbyshire Record Office in Matlock looking at Bryan Donkin’s diary of work done on the East Greenwich Mill. Of course I also

looked at their file on Beale which was full of scandals and discovered that Matlock is not a good place for an old lady on her own in MidDecember (it’s in a ravine so the wifi is very dodgy, for food there’s the chip shop, or the other chip shop).

So – what happened to the east Greenwich tide mill? Following the death of George Russell the developer, the estate went into Chancery for a long period. It was administered by the law firm of Sharp and Handasyde – and please remember Sharp’s role in the 1796 altercation, which I mentioned last week, when he was pushed into the river. In 1809 they called in Brian Donkin to give an opinion on the state of the mill. It was then only seven years old, but was sinking into the soft ground, causing the walls to twist. There was water under the building and the wharves had collapsed.

Donkin wanted to know details of the construction of the mill. The foreman had been a Mr. Dryden, who I also mentioned two weeks ago, because he had been moaning to Olinthus Gregory in 1801 that the mill was being built all wrong. He,

and his boss, John Lloyd, refused to talk to Donkin until some money had changed hands - £300 which seems a lot of money in 1809. However from then on Lloyd cooperated with Donkin, showed him the plans, and agreed they were rubbish because they ignored the constant pressure of the moving water.

Donkin enlisted his friend John Hall as the contractor for the work to be done and so they began what was to be a long job. Donkin describes every visit in his diary along with detailed instructions of the work to be done. This was a massive and major work and it was accompanied by constant complaints from Sharp and the other executors to keep costs down and to work faster.

One of the things which was done was to enlarge the mill ponds which lay behind the mill – basically the area in front of the Pilot pub. I have always been amused to see that landscaping by the New Millennium Experience Co. built a hill on what had been a mill pond. The main work however was to stabilise the mill with new brickwork and piles sunk deep into the river bed.

In 1812 Sharp went conveniently bankrupt and Handasyde denied having had any money belonging to the estate. Hall consulted his solicitor and in 1813 a court held at the City Guildhall found Handasyde was liable for the debt. Donkin’s diary says little else about this part of the affair and is very quiet about the final settlement on the work. He mentions a sum of money so vast that as far as I am aware everyone who has seen it in the diary has concluded it was a mistake!

There is no reason to believe that it had any more problems. It is a pity therefore that some thirty years later it was described as a ‘heap of materials’. This description come from Frank Hills, the then owner, who was trying to get a reduction in his rates, so maybe, in those circumstances, it is not a surprise. I will try and describe Frank Hills in my next article. He had bought the mill in 1842 as part of his marriage settlement.

So what happened to this Greenwich riverside mill once it was repaired?

It has originally been designed by a William Johnson, who appears to have lived in the Mill House until 1807 –and so was gone before Donkin arrived.

He actually went to Maldon where he either owned or was involved in a salt works. He later seems to have gone to Cheshire and then to Millbank. He may or may not have been the William Johnson involved in the Haytor Granite concern.

At Greenwich from 1807 the miller was a William Doust. Donkin doesn’t mention a miller as being present while the work was being done, and indeed the mill house was used as accommodation by

As we will see – and the story of this mill is a very very long saga. The mill probably survived into the 20th century when it was demolished when it was part of South Met Gas’s Phoenix Chemical works. It was then completely forgotten until local history librarian, Julian Watson, saw a note about it in a history of tide mills – and gradually his, and my, research has uncovered this huge story, having started with nothing.

There is a long long way to go yet!

The Charlton Upbeats: Celebrating World Down Syndrome Day

It’s really important that we run these sessions with the Upbeats, so anything we can do to be as consistent as possible is vital Sunday 21 March, marked the annual World Down Syndrome Day. Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) is very proud to deliver the Charlton Upbeats programme for young people and adults with Down’s syndrome.

Into its 13th year, the Upbeats programme specialises in providing a safe and progressive environment for participants of all ages to reach their full potential.

As well as providing weekly football sessions, the Upbeats regularly engage in other activities, including days out and overnight residential trips. Over 100 young people are registered with the Upbeats programme.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, CACT staff have been providing weekly virtual sessions for the Upbeats to ensure the group can still socialise with one another and take part in fun activities.

From baking, dancing to fitness sessions, the virtual activities keep the Upbeats active and engaged.

On Saturday 24 April, Charlton Athletic’s fixture against Peterborough United will be dedicated to the Upbeats programme. The annual Upbeats Walk will take place on the day, where supporters will walk a mile to raise funds for the programme.

Last year, the virtual walk raised over £27,000 for the Upbeats project, which is run entirely on voluntary donations.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) proposes to make the above-mentioned Orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49, 124 and Part IV of Schedule 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

2. The general effect of the Orders would be: a) to introduce double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions on: i) Broad Walk, south side, from a point opposite the shared boundary of Nos. 125a and 127 in a westerly direction for

approximately 44 metres; ii) Broad Walk, south side, from a point approximately 7 metres east of its junction with Corelli Road to a point approximately 10

metres west of its junction with Correlli Road; iii) Perpins Road, north side, from its junction with Alderwood Road in an easterly direction for 10 metres; iv) Perpins Road, south side, from its junction with Alderwood Road to a point outside the shared boundary of Nos. 23 and 25; v) Alderwood Road, west side, from a point 10 metres north of its junction with Perpins Road to a point 10 metres south of its

junction with Perpins Road; b) to update the map tiles attached to The Greenwich (Free Parking Places, Loading Places and Waiting, Loading and Stopping Restrictions) Consolidation Order 2018 and The Greenwich (Charged-For Parking Places) Consolidation Order 2018 so as to reflect the provisions

referred to in sub-paragraphs (a) above.

5. Any person who wishes to object to or make other representations about the proposed Orders, should send a statement in writing by 14th April 2021, specifying the grounds on which any objection is made by email to Parking-Design@royalgreenwich.gov.uk (quoting reference 21-03 Broad Walk).

6. Persons objecting to the proposed Orders should be aware that in view of current access to information legislation, this Council would be legally obliged to make any comments received in response to this notice, open to public inspection.

2. The general effect of the Orders would be to: (a) provide new Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) to be called Avery Hill (AH) CPZ and Falconwood (FW) CPZ; (b) retain double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions where they are currently located within AH and FW CPZs and provide

additional double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions: (i) at road junctions and certain other lengths within AH and FW CPZs to prevent obstructive parking; and (ii) in (1) Alderwood Street: (a) the west side, for 27.5 metres south of Bexley Road; and (b) the east side, for 20 metres south of Bexley Road; and (2) Bexley Road: (a) main west to east arm, the north side, for 10 metres either side of Packmores Road; and (b) access road fronting Nos. 282 to 316 Bexley Road, both sides, for 10 metres east of Alderwood Road; (c) (i) provide that AH CPZ would include the roads and lengths of roads listed in Schedule 1 to this Notice, and would operate between 11am and 1pm on Mondays to Fridays inclusive (the AH CPZ hours); (ii) provide business permit holders (or up to two hours free) parking places that would operate during the AH CPZ hours in certain lengths of the Bexley Road service road fronting Darland House and Nos. 152 to 198 Bexley Road; (iii) provide free parking places that would operate 'at any time' in certain lengths on the west side Avery Hill Road; (iv) provide free parking places that would operate between 8.30am and 6.30pm on Mondays to Fridays inclusive (two hours maximum stay, no return for two hours) on the east side of Avery Hill Road, near its junction with Bexley Road and in certain lengths of the Bexley Road service road fronting Darland House and Nos. 152 to 198 Bexley Road; (v) provide disabled persons parking places in certain lengths of the Bexley Road service road fronting Darland House and Nos. 152 to 198 Bexley Road that would be available 'at any time' to blue badge disabled permit holders; (vi) provide a combination of permit holders parking places and single yellow line waiting restrictions that operate during the AH CPZ hours in every length of road in the CPZ not occupied by the ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions in AH CPZ referred to in sub-paragraph 2(b) above or the parking places referred to in sub-paragraphs 2(c)(i) to (v) above; (d) (i) provide that FW CPZ would include the roads and lengths of roads listed in Schedule 2 to this Notice and would operate between 8.30am and 10am on Mondays to Fridays inclusive (the FW CPZ hours); (ii) provide a combination of permit holders parking places and single yellow line waiting restrictions that operate during the FW CPZ hours in every length of road in the CPZ not occupied by the 'at any time' waiting restrictions in FW CPZ referred to in sub-paragraph 2(b) above; and (e) provide that residents and business users whose postal address is within AH or FW CPZ (for the purposes of AH CPZ, also including Wootton House, Aldewood Road and No. 1 Anstridge Road but excluding properties on the west side of Avery Hill Road) would be able to purchase permits and visitors’ vouchers at the rates set out in Schedule 3 to this Order.

4. The Orders and other documents giving more detailed particulars of the Orders can be viewed by emailing Parking-Design@royalgreenwich.gov.uk requesting electronic copies.

5. If any person wishes to question the validity of the Orders or of any of the provisions contained therein on the grounds that they are not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, or that any requirement of that Act or of any instrument made under that Act has not been complied with, that person may, within six weeks from the date on which the Orders were made, apply for that purpose to the High Court.

(1) residents' permit (specifying up to two vehicles), £57.00 each per year; (2) residents’ visitors’ vouchers, £7.00 for a book of 10 vouchers; up to a maximum of 100 vouchers per household per year (3) carers' permits, no charge; (4) nannies' permits, £101.00 each per year; (5) business permits, £101 per year for the first permit and £216 per year for each subsequent permit; up to a maximum of 10 business permits per business at any one time; and (6) tradesmen's permits, £15.00 each per week up to a maximum of six weeks.
