Greenwich Theatre’s production of The After-Dinner Joke will see 50 actors – all recent drama graduates – recreate the 66-scene play, performing their parts from home. And there’s promise of a special guest joining the cast. First transmitted on BBC1 in 1978, The After-Dinner Joke explores the business side of charity work through the lens of a young woman, Selby, who strives ‘to do good’ as a charity worker and avoid getting caught up in political issues. But when money is involved, is that ever really possible?

Arts and crafts with The Creation Station Despite the fact its sessions take place online over Zoom, the Creation Station is really about encouraging little ones to engage with arts and crafts, instead of zoning out through screen time. Seeds of change: Woodlands Farm partners with Sitopia Farm to grow more food on site

Woodlands Farm has announced a collaboration with Sitopia Farm, a young social enterprise committed to growing and distributing food locally. Sitopia (which means ‘food place’) will farm sustainably on two acres of the Arena Field while the rest of Woodlands Farm will operate as normal. The team behind Sitopia have launched a crowdfunding campaign to grow the project further. The partnership will further align Woodlands with the community horticulture movement, and see the two organisations work together to conserve nature while producing high quality, locally-grown food. Holly O’Mahony speaks to founder and chief grower of Sitopia Farm Chloë Dunnett and project manager at Woodlands Farm David Jones to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Firstly, how did the collaboration between Woodlands Farm and Sitopia Farm come about? And, what will it look like?

farms, selling our produce locally and donating a proportion of our harvests to the local food bank.

We always wanted to expand to a larger site so we could grow proper volumes of food, be financially self-sufficient, and undertake a much wider range of social and community activities. With the help of Claire Pritchard at the GCDA we found the wonderful Woodlands

Farm Trust and are delighted to be working in partnership with them.

Clearly there’s a fantastic amount of great work already underway at the farm and we’re all keen to realise its potential and do even more to turn it into a thriving food, farming and educational hub for London!

David Jones: We welcome the team behind Sitopia Farm, who

share our ambition of producing food whilst conserving nature, the wider environment and working within their local community. It seems a near perfect fit for both of us. We hope as the project moves on we can develop a great working partnership even further.

HOM: Chloë, you’ve applied for a grant from the Mayor of London to get the Sitopia Farm Project going. Can you tell us a bit about your crowdfunding campaign?

CD: While we’re aiming to be financially self-sufficient through sales of produce and other activities, we need help with our start-up costs, which include things like polytunnels, a rainwater harvesting system and gardening tools. We’re hoping to raise £80k and are absolutely delighted with progress so far: in the first three weeks we raised £30k, with 230 backers. We’re hoping to secure match funding from the Mayor of London as part of the crowdfunder. We’ve been bowled over by the local support so far; even donations as small as £1 help show the Mayor this is a popular project he should support!

Sitopia Farm use a two acre patch of the Arena Field to grow fresh food sustainably. Can you tell us anything more about what you plan to grow and where you plan to sell it?

CD: We will be growing a wide range of delicious salad leaves, green and leafy vegetables, tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs, fruit and more using organic, regenerative techniques. Also seasonal flowers! We can grow so many fantastically beautiful flowers in England, yet 90% of flowers are sprayed with chemicals and imported, with associated vast environmental footprints.

We are still developing our routes to market but plan to sell the produce locally via a mixture of direct sales at the farm and local shops, and through veg box schemes, local restaurants and farmers’ markets.

We also want to explore selling into the public sector including schools and hospitals, and plan to set up a flower subscription service so those who sign up will receive a regular bunch of beautiful, seasonal flowers.

HOM: David, Woodlands Farm has been closed to the public since the first lockdown. Do www.weekender.co.uk

DJ: We have kept an eye on all government guidance over the past few months with regards to the possibility of reopening in a way that’s safe for our staff, volunteers, visitors and school visits.

Government guidance unfortunately lacks detail, making it problematic in deciding how to open safely and what can be available to do on reopening.

It’s difficult to give any specific dates on reopening, but we do hope to do so in some way over the summer.

HOM: There’s been a cultural shift towards shopping for local produce in recent years, which makes it particularly encouraging to see more initiatives like yours come into fruition. Why is now the time to embrace the trend of eating locally-grown food?

DJ: We at Woodlands Farm have grown quality produce for the local community for over 20 years, all without fertilisers or pesticides, on fields which have fantastic biodiversity. From anecdotal evidence on the farm, we do feel that people now have even more interest in their food, its origins and how it’s grown, which matches the national trend. Buying local supports the local economy, reduces the amount of food miles and can provide more food security.

CD: Locally-grown food – if it has been grown in an ecologicallyfriendly way – can play a big role in tackling the climate crisis and massive biodiversity loss. The current food system is also a huge driver of obesity. We all vote with our forks three times a day for the future we want. We, at Sitopia, want to make this easier for everyone by making delicious, nutritious food accessible to all. We also want to harness the power of food, and the act of growing food, to connect different people and gain from the physical and mental benefits working in nature can bring.

HOM: Lastly, will there be opportunities for the public to get involved with the project?

CD: Do let us know if you’re keen on volunteering, or have things you’d like to donate. For example we need a large shed, recycled wood to build compost bays...and more!

We’d also love to hear from you if there are particular vegetables that you would like us to grow – perhaps there’s a vegetable you’ve loved eating in another country, but rarely get to enjoy here? We may well be able to grow it.

Tea-da!

Theatre of Tea workshops are serving tea with a side of magic Businesses across the hospitality sector have been forced to adapt their services in order to keep a customer base during the pandemic. As for customers, robbed of the sensory experience that comes with shopping for goods in person – not to mention the human contact that comes with such escapades – we’re desperate for opportunities to interact again. Enter Royal Arsenal-based business Drury Tea and Coffee, which has launched a series of tea tasting workshops held over zoom, under the umbrella name Theatre of Tea, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The Theatre of Tea workshops are a collaboration between Marco Olmi, Managing Director of the Drury Tea & Coffee Company and Julia Jones, owner of specialist travel business Iceland Traveller.

The Drury Tea & Coffee Company is a family business established by Marco’s grandfather and his two brothers in 1936. A specialist coffee roaster and tea blender, Marco’s company supplies the hospitality sector as well as members of the public, and lost the majority of its business when the pandemic hit the hospitality sector

particularly hard. With the ban on all but essential foreign travel, Julia’s business has also fallen on extremely tough times.

It was out of these dire circumstances that the two business owners struck up their idea for Theatre of Tea workshops, which could transport participants all over the world through their taste buds at a time when physical travel is prohibited.

“We’ve known Marco Olmi and his great teas and coffees for some time, yet it took lockdown for him to suggest that he could host an online tea tasting for friends if we were interested,” Julia remembers.

“Once we’d signed up, Marco sent each of us a box containing the teas we were to try, together with all the instructions

we needed to be prepared for the event.”

For Julia, the experience of setting up the cups, spoons and bowls felt like setting a scene for a play. “When we got started, there was so much to get involved with! Boiling the kettle, timing the brew, smelling the aromas and identifying the flavours,” she recalls. “It was a great success, and we realised that we didn’t normally drink these exciting teas, partly because we weren’t aware of how much was available, but mainly because we didn’t really know how to make tea. So after a restless night, the next morning we called Marco to suggest doing it all again,” she says. Only this time, it would be for the public. Marco agreed, but on one condition: Julia must run the tastings.

“For Drury it was an ideal solution to a perennial problem,” affirms Marco. “We know how good our teas are and how different they are to most supermarket teas, but persuading people to give them a try was difficult,” he admits. “The problem was exacerbated during lockdown as we had to close down our last remaining retail shop in Covent Garden and move completely to online sales, thus losing the interactive nature of visiting a specialist tea supplier. At the same time, financial constraints on our business due to the loss of hospitality sales – which account for 90% of our turnover – meant we didn’t have the resources to do too much about it until Julia came along and suggested the collaboration.”

food “The feeling is definitely inclusive and for people who are on their own at home, this is a lovely way to feel part of a group,” affirms Julia. “We’ve started to offer private tasting events which work very well for family and friend groups where the theatre of the tea is the focal point. Because they already know each other, everyone can also have a really good chat,” she adds.

“We all know that the British love their tea, and at times of crisis the very act of making and drinking a cup of tea is without doubt a calming and soothing experience. I think that’s at the very heart of what Julia is doing,” says Marco.

As is only natural when test-running a new offering, Marco and Julia have tweaked the classes based on what’s proved particularly popular. “We have made several changes since we started based on our own reflections and our feedback,” says Julia. “We continue to try different teas every time, and are now also trying to include more ideas for pairings,” she reveals. “Even though the demand is high, we will keep our group size small,” she says, which will assure each participant has the chance to have their questions answered. a dose of exploration was key to the concept from the start. “We were keen to avoid making the events too formal, so the concept was designed to combine the idea of ‘making time for tea’ and exploring teas that you’d probably never tasted or even thought of tasting before,” says Julia.

“The theatre idea only really emerged

after our first trial event with friends,” she admits. “The whole sequence of the event was just like preparing for a performance: planning the teas to taste, packing and sending them off and asking our guests to set up their own cups, kettle, all the teas and some extras such as lemon or honey,” she adds. “On Zoom, everyone is there on the screen and with so much activity

while we brew, slurp and comment on the taste experiences, it’s like immersive theatre with a script but also with plenty of scope for improvisation.”

A big benefit of the tea tastings being live, rather than pre-recorded, is the opportunity it provides for groups to get together socially, albeit online at a time when we’re all so isolated.

So far, so good in terms of feedback.

“We’ve been delighted with the feedback and even had to design gift vouchers in time for Christmas for happy customers to give as presents,” beams Julia, citing the classes’ relaxed nature, and the fact they’re guided and interactive as among the most popular traits according to the feedback. “One of the best things we’ve done is to label every tea sample we send with a QR code that takes you straight to

the location on Drury’s website to read more and purchase if you wish,” she adds.

“The feedback to us has been entirely positive,” agrees Marco.

“In fact, we’ve had many attendees immediately purchase some of the teas they’ve tried. Everyone gets a discount code for their first order with their tasting pack, making these unusual teas even more accessible.”

Given the popularity of the classes, one major question remains: will the pair continue to offer tea tastings – either virtually or online – once business as usual returns?

“We do expect to continue. At the moment it’s not just the end of lockdown, but the lengthening of the days and a need to have a break from Zoom that we are considering,” says Julia.

For Marco, despite being born out of necessity, the virtual tea tastings have taught him what enthusiasm there is for events of this nature. Besides, in Julia he’s found the ideal business partner to run events of this nature. “We’re more than happy to continue supporting the concept,” he says. “In fact, given Julia’s expertise in providing fabulous experiences, maybe it’s something we can develop even further – whether digitally or here in the Royal Arsenal.”

Blackheath Halls hosts virtual talk with debut novelist Amanda Weinberg Blackheath Halls is hosting a virtual talk with author Amanda Weinberg, whose debut novel The Tears of Monterini was published last year. Set in the Tuscan village of Pitigliano, the novel explores the community’s Jewish roots, fusing a fictional story of love, war, betrayal and friendship with historically accurate events from the fascist era of Mussolini, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Held over Zoom, the talk is a chance to hear Amanda talk about the inspiration for her novel, and the research that took her beyond Pitigliano to Emilia-Romagna and Rome. Amanda will delve into the history of the time as she takes listeners on a virtual escapade to the village, bringing its inhabitants to life, and getting under the skin of the Catholic-Jewish bond, and the role the partisans played at that time.

After graduating from the University of East Anglia with a degree in modern languages and completing a PGCE at King’s College, London, Amanda taught French, German and Italian at a London comprehensive before pivoting into a 20-year career in sales and marketing. It was on stumbling upon Pitigliano in the Maremma

region of Tuscany back in 1998, that the seeds for her book were planted.

“We knew nothing about its rich cultural history and were in awe of the beauty of the village and the Jewish history that stretched back for centuries,” the author recalls.

“We returned the following year and bought a house in the area called the Fratta.” Once settled, the idea for Amanda’s novel began to germinate.

“I knew there was an important story to tell in this village and in the area beyond,” says the author, who is already working on her second book, a memoir of her personal experiences in the real Monterini.

For Amanda, the process of writing The Tears of Monterini has been “a labour of love” involving years of research and www.weekender.co.uk

investigation. “I spent hours talking to the villagers, gathering anecdotes and stories of what it was like living during the fascist era. Most importantly I learnt about the strong bond that existed between the Jews and the Catholics of the village, and how the villagers consider the Jewish history to be a part of the heritage of their entire village,” she says. “I learnt about the ‘partigiani’, the Italian partisans who resisted fascism.” Weaving aspects of these true stories into the characters’ lives, Amanda’s novel contains accurate historical detail of Mussolini’s reign as well as fictionalised invention.

The Tears of Monterini was published in June 2020, amid the pandemic.

As such, all celebrations to mark the book hitting the shelves have taken place online. Still, Amanda is focusing

on the positives. “I had a virtual launch on Facebook and enjoyed the experience. The beauty of a virtual launch means friends, family and interested readers could join from all corners of the globe and that was very special to me,” she says.

“Since the launch I have been invited to speak on Zoom to many different groups and organisations,” she continues, citing synagogues, literary groups and charities based in the UK and Israel among her first listeners.

“I have really enjoyed the online experience and am delighted I have the opportunity to talk about my novel and the village that inspired me.”

With strong ties to south London, Amanda is particularly excited to be speaking at Blackheath Halls next week. “My first teacher’s training experience as a French teacher was at Kidbrooke school,” she recalls. But her connections to the area go back much further. “My great grandfather was a founding member of the Woolwich synagogue, and my father was born in Lewisham hospital and grew up in Lee,” she says. “My grandparents owned a sweet shop in Welling and my favourite great aunt lived in Blackheath. I spent many wonderful school holidays in Blackheath and

my childhood memories are full of trips to Greenwich Park and playing on the heath next to my aunt’s flat.”

Amanda hopes that from her book, readers take away the generosity and kindness of the human spirit under duress and in exceptional circumstances. “The book offers a revealing, uplifting account of a littleknown piece of Italian history. Italy was a fascist country, yet ordinary Italians hid their Jewish neighbours at great risk to themselves,” she says. “What inspired me most about the stories I heard of this cruel period in history was the acts of kindness, no matter how small,” she adds, pointing out that there are parallels between that time and the current pandemic, which has seen similar acts of kindness bestowed on strangers make the news over the past year. “It is these kind and generous acts that enable us to get through challenging times.”

History

200th Anniversary of an industrial accident on the Greenwich Peninsula

Mary Mills Last week I wrote about a tide mill built in 1801 on the Peninsula riverside near to where the Jetty stands today. I explained how it was associated with the Pilot Pub and the cottages beside it. I also said it was the scene of an industrial accident in 1803 and that this accident had consequences beyond the immediate ones, and it involved one of the heroes of steam technology, Richard Trevithick.

Because of developments, including the landscaping of the area, as part of the Dome site it is very difficult to find the area where this incident took place. Older residents will remember that the courtyard where the Pilot pub stands used to be a road called Riverway which went all the way down to the riverside. On the northern side of Riverway stood the Blackwall Point Power Station -- and this was roughly the site of the tide mill. The accident here has been described in lots of histories of the steam engine but none of them really say where it happened – well I am telling you that it was here, near the site of The Jetty.

In 1803 Richard Trevithick had recently come to London from Cornwall to advertise his work. He was an engineer in the Cornish mining community – an area from which so much innovation on steam engine technology sprang in this period.

He had developed a high pressure steam engine which was in competition with, and avoided the royalties of, the Birmingham based Boulton and Watt Partnership. They were the market leaders then with their low pressure engine and the use of high pressure steam was thought dangerous and difficult to use. In Cornwall Trevithick had also developed a moving carriage using his steam technology. . He had come to London with his ideas and famously demonstrated his locomotive on a circular

track at Euston. In 1802 he set up a London office and began to promote his engines.

Sales were handled by Andrew Vivian In 1803 a George Russell ordered an 8 horse power high pressure engine from Vivian and Trevithick. It was to be used during construction work of the mill and for pumping out water during building.

It cost £75.12s. As building work went on during 1803 the steam engine began to give some concern. The fire was directly in contact with the cast iron boiler and on Sunday 4th September it overheated. The boiler became red hot and some joints burnt out. Despite this the engine was kept working and was the responsibility of an, unnamed, apprentice.

On the following Thursday, the 8th September, the boy was called away from minding the engine and asked to catch eels which were under the foundations of the building. He went off and left the steam lever - which vented the waste stream - fastened down. He did this by wedging a piece of timber at the top of the safety value and then bent it down so that it could not rise to let the steam escape.

A labourer was asked to mind the engine while the boy was gone and noticed that it had begun to run too fast. He was alarmed by this and shut it down but he did not

remove the wedge jamming the safety valve. The result was inevitable and fatal.

The boiler burst ‘with an explosion as sudden and as dreadful as a powder mill’.

One piece of the boiler, an inch thick and weighing 5 cwt was thrown 125 yards in the air and ‘landing on the ground made a hole eighteen inches deep’. Bricks were thrown in a ‘circle of two hundred, no two of them stayed together’. Three men were killed instantly, and three more were injured.

Of the three who were injured, one went deaf but was soon to able to return to work. The boy who had been gone about an hour had actually returned ‘that instant and was then going to take the trig from the valve’. He was hurt but recovered.

The third injured man, Thomas Nailor, had been showered with boiling water and was badly scalded. A wherry was called and he was taken to St.Thomas Hospital – then still on its old site in the Borough. Thus Nailor went to one of the best hospitals in the country quickly and efficiently but despite the work of Mr. Bingham, the surgeon, Nailor died three days later.

The newspapers were quick to report the accident - although there is a suspicion that the story was given to them by those who did not wish Trevithick well. He feared that Boulton and Watt, as rival engine manufactures, would be quick to point out the dangers involved. He said ‘Boulton and Watt are about to do me every injury in their power for they have done the best to report the explosion both in the newspapers and in private letters very different to what it really was’. When The Times ran the story a week later it was with the rider that Mr. Watt’s engines would not explode in this way and that the accident ‘should be a warning to engineers to construct their safety valves so that common workmen cannot stop them at their pleasure’.

Trevithick quickly made some changes to the design of his boilers. In future his boilers had more than one safety vent and were constructed differently.

It seems that there was some sort of enquiry after the accident – and it is the sort of thing which ought to have happened. The only clue to this is found in a register of expenses submitted to the Court of Chancery after George Russell’s death. One item concerns expenses to ‘Daniel Vaux and Mr. Johnson for attending as a witness in a case respecting the steam engine in Greenwich’ - What was this case?

Was it about insurance? I have been never been able to find out and some knowledge of this case and its proceedings might throw a whole new light on the matter.

When I first wrote this up many years ago I got a very cross letter from a Cornish historian who seemed so be upset that I, a Londoner, was writing something which might put their hero in a bad light. But North West Kent – and that was where Greenwich was officially in 1803 - has a big claim on Trevithick whether they like that in Cornwall, or not. In Dartford a Trevithick day is held every year.

The east Greenwich accident had dealt a blow to Trevithick’s career although he continued with many successes. He went abroad, worked on many projects and eventually in the 1830s was commissioned to work at Hall’s engineering works in Dartford. I am, incidentally, always very impressed with Halls – now J. & E.Hall with an HQ just outside Dartford at Hawley.

Historians go on and on about all these early breakthrough firms of the industrial revolution in the north and midlands and ignore Halls, in North West Kent, and still going. We will come back to their founder, John Hall, later – actually next week!

Trevithick worked for a year or so at Halls and was then taken ill and died at the Bull Inn in April 1833. Many accounts will tell you he died penniless and in extreme poverty – well, all I can say is that if the Bull Inn is where people in extreme poverty lived and/or died, then they have a very different definition of poverty to me. Nice hotel with a room for the visiting consultant, more like.

Trevithick’s funeral was held at the local church of St Edmund, King and Martyr, followed by burial in the upper graveyard.

This is up on East Hill as you go towards The Brent and is above the road behind a massive brick retaining wall. You have to go down Great Queen Street for the entrance.

Staff members from Hall’s) acted as pallbearers and the place was marked by an engraved headstone, though by 1898 this had apparently disappeared. Burials in the graveyard stopped around 1857, and it became a St Edmund’s Pleasance in the 1960s. Some of the larger tombs remain in place surrounded by railings, but the space has been planted and landscaped. there is an enormous wall plaque telling you “Approximately 25ft from this wall lie the remains of Richard Trevithick the great engineer and pioneer of high pressure steam he died at the Bull Inn Dartford and was carried here by his fellow workers of Halls Engineering Works to a paupers grave, born Illogan Cornwall April 13th 1771, died Dartford Kent April 22nd 1833”.

To return to the tide mill and east Greenwich. I’ve nothing like finished with its story yet and the next episode will involve the very same John Hall of Dartford, owner of the factory Trevithick was working in when he died.

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) [Woodrow] PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Shift Traffic who need to carry out telecoms maintance.

2. The Order will come into operation on 18th March 2021 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take one day. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Woodrow at the junction of Hillreach.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Godfrey Hill, Woodhill, Hillreach and vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.

h) to extend the double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restriction on the northwest side of Footscray Road by 11.8 metres so it extends outside No. 175; i) to update the map tiles attached to The Greenwich (Free Parking Places, Loading Places and Waiting, Loading and Stopping Restrictions) Consolidation Order 2018 and The Greenwich (Charged-For Parking Places) Consolidation Order 2018 so as to reflect the provisions referred to in sub-paragraphs (a), (b), (c), (d), (e), (f), (g) and (h) above.

CACT holiday courses to return in Greenwich

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has announced its popular holiday football courses will be returning this Easter at venues in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

The courses, for young people aged 4-15, have been adapted to ensure they are Covid compliant in relation to government and FA guidelines.

Running from Tuesday 6 April at Sporting Club Thamesmead and the Charlton Athletic Training Ground in New Eltham, courses take place from 9am to 3pm.

Michael Ward, CACT’s Head of Football & Sports Development, said: “We’re really pleased to be able to deliver our Easter courses this year. It’s been a tough 12 months but being able to run these courses means we can get young people active and enjoying football again.

Young people on the course will have the chance to take part in a number of fun, football-based activities including skill sessions and match-based sessions.
