Back to bootcamp Feeling stagnant or looking to get fit before the eagerly-anticipated June 21? For now, Blackheath Bootcamp has swapped the Heath for the virtual sphere, but it’s offering a full programme of classes online. This Saturday, book into an early morning Zoomcamp with Juliet (9:30am – 10:30am), who will take you through an hour-long workout at home. Then at the same time on Sunday, there’s a BYO weights class led by Sally, followed by a far gentler, mindful yoga session at 11:30am.

In light of the lockdown, NOW Gallery has extended the run of its outdoor-facing Meanings and Attachments exhibition until the end of March. The work of Greenwich-based artist Mah Rana, the exhibition comprises 23 portraits of Greenwich residents, who peer out onto Peninsula Square from the glass fronting of NOW Gallery. The exhibition is particularly fitting, coming at a time when we’re once again craving yet avoiding interactions with those outside our homes. It’s also a particularly welcome injection of outdoor culture at a time when all galleries remain closed.

Meet the women of pirate radio Swat up on street fans One of Greenwich’s quirkier, more unusual offerings, the Fan Museum is among the latest exhibition spaces to join the growing Google Arts & Culture platform. This means that while the museum itself remains closed, you can explore its intricate collection of fans – spanning the 12th century to present day – online. This inclaudes the museum’s somewhat more modern Street Fan exhibition, which saw Europe’s foremost contemporary fan maker Codex Urbanus work with 29 street artists to create a series of innovative folding fans, which were displayed in a landmark exhibition at the museum in 2017.

According to Royal Museums Greenwich, pirate radio stations began in the UK as ‘offshore’ broadcasters, the most famous being Radio Caroline. Not only did they provide an alternative to mainstream radio, they started the careers of many who went on to become legendary radio DJs. One to book ahead (for Monday), this talk is a chance to hear about the women who were central to the pirate radio scene of the 1980s and 90s. Speakers include Angie Dee and Carmella Obinyan, and DJ Debbie Golt is chairing the event. Hosted by Royal Museums Greenwich, this event is part of Women’s History Month and is taking place online.

School is the best place for children Children’s learning, well-being, sense of routine and social interaction is best served by them all returning to school.

Getting pupils back into classrooms has always been a priority for the UK Government and, alongside existing protective measures, the robust, regular, rapid testing programme helps to protect the school community and families.

‘SCHOOL IS WHERE KIDS NEED TO BE TO SOCIALISE’ KATE JEFFERSON, HEADTEACHER AT MILLBANK ACADEMY, LONDON “School is where kids need to be,” says a London academy headteacher.

“It’s where they see their friends and socialise. Those social skills are at the cornerstone of our modern world,” confirms Millbank Academy head Kate Jefferson, set to welcome back 300 three to 11-year-olds.

Staggered break times, ventilated classrooms, extra cleaning staff and no group gatherings have already been available to key workers’ children.

“When parents collected their children there was a real buzz with people being very excited about their friends coming back to join them. Everyone wants this transition to be as safe and positive as possible.”

With his 100-strong staff, he is preparing for all 1,250 students to return to the city centre campus.

“All our learners are going to be over the moon to be back in college,” he continued.

Arts and entertainment pandemic. Many people engaged in baking so we have Mrs Beeton’s cookery book from the 19th century, we also have a quern stone which was used to ground flour 2,000 years ago.

Each of the items has a description of what it is, and each one ends with a question asking people for their story from the last year.

For example, we have a flyer to promote a Vietnamese Community event to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. Obviously during 2020, we couldn’t meet together and so we asked whether there were any celebrations, gatherings or club meetings that people missed this year.

HOM: Are there any particular objects in the exhibition that fascinate you?

The second is the mummified cat. It was fascinating to see the object, knowing that it is thousands of years old, from the other side of the world and yet is now here in Greenwich.

HOM: How have you found the experience of curating an exhibition for a virtual audience compared to one for visitors coming to your sites in person?

Among the collection, items including a Second World War gas mask, a 170-year old cookery book and a 1914 school attendance medal hold particular pertinence in a year that’s seen many of us branch out with our own cooking while stuck at home, unable to go to work or school.

JD: The objects speak for themselves online, as there is no physical staging. We had to consider the look of the objects, as some that are plain have the most interesting stories, but will not be appealing on screen. A virtual exhibition gives us the opportunity to be flexible.

But the borough’s story is not yet finished. After what has been a particularly tough year filled with new rituals, experiences and ways of living, the trust is looking for locals willing to donate items to help document the human, personal sides to living through the pandemic, so that one day it can be looked back on by future generations.

It also meant we could include audio, which was particularly useful for telling the real stories from people across the borough, talking about what life has been like in the last year. We hear from café owners, shop keepers, working parents trying to home-school their children and members of the medical community.

HOM: Speaking of these present-day stories that you’re collating, how will they eventually feed into the work you do at RGHT?

Holly O’Mahony, Greenwich Weekender: What inspired your latest exhibition, Living in Greenwich: Tales through Time?

Janet Denne: The main motivation for the exhibition was to find a way to engage with the public whilst access to our Collections and Archive centre, and Charlton House – the best surviving example of a Jacobean Mansion in London – are closed to the public because of the pandemic.

The Trust manages the Collections and Archive for the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Ordinarily, we also carry out activities with schools and community groups, but all of this had to stop because of the lockdown. The exhibition is our way of putting our collection in front of people to entertain them and tell them about how people lived in Greenwich before us.

JD: The Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust maintains the Collection and Archive for the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It’s our role to look after the objects in the collection, but it’s also our responsibility to collect now so that future generations can hear the stories of how we lived. The pandemic is such a key moment in history. People in the future will wonder what it was like to live through this, in the same way that we look back to see how people lived in Tudor Britain or through the World Wars.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope virtual viewers take away from the experience of exploring the exhibition online?

HOM: Of the objects highlighted in the exhibition, some like the gas mask have particular resonance this year. Did you actively seek out items which might speak to a society living through a pandemic?

JD: In selecting the objects and archives to use, we very much had in mind the pandemic and we chose items which also had a contemporary element, for example, we thought about how people might have spent their time during the last year and selected relevant items. We have several themes in the exhibition, including celebrations, food, communication, home and health. These were relevant to how people lived during the

JD: There are a couple. One is the antivaccination poster. This dates back to 1871, when the first vaccination was introduced, which was to eradicate Smallpox. Some people were against the vaccination as they thought it might be unsafe. It’s interesting to me that some people are thinking the same over 100 years later, at a time when Charlton House is being used as a vaccination centre for Covid-19.

JD: I want people to wonder at the wide selection of items that we have on show from our collection – each of which tells a story from the past. They show us how life in the borough has changed and that we are part of the story.

Often the objects are ordinary and everyday, like a spoon from medieval times or a brooch from the ancient Romans, but each tells us something of what life might have been like for our ancestors in Greenwich. It shows how items that we take for granted now can become important over time. I also hope that people will learn about the work of the Trust and will take the opportunity to visit us when they can.

Flowers have always been associated with Mother’s Day, but this year they’re more popular than ever

Mother’s Day – or Mothering Sunday, as it was formerly known – is taking on a special resonance in 2021. Falling almost exactly a year after the first lockdown came into place and marking, for many, 12 months of being apart from loved ones, it’s no wonder we’re feeling sentimental about it. Even in ‘normal times’, it’s among the most common occasions of the year to buy flowers, but local florists have noticed a boom in recent weeks, writes Holly O’Mahony…

“This past year we have seen a huge spike in daily orders,” affirms Georgina Brian, founder of Greenwichbased florist Blooms By G. “People are unable to see each other for special occasions, so what’s the next best thing? To send flowers!”

Gifting flowers is in fact an age-old way of marking the occasion. Mother’s Day dates back to the 17th century, when it was established as a holiday for household servants, who would take leave from their employers to visit

their mothers. The servants would reportedly gather fresh flowers on their journey home to give as a gift.

Other aspects of the tradition, such as visiting your ‘mother’ church in your hometown and eating simnel cake, are no longer associated with Mother’s Day, but gifting flowers remains a custom three centuries later.

Mother’s Day experienced a lull over the years, but was revived in 1913 thanks to an English Anglican woman called Constance Smith. It

wasn’t long before merchants saw the commercial opportunity for the sentimental calendar fixture and so, little by little, the holiday we know today with its cards and flowers was born.

Like many florists who used to make up a considerable portion of their income supplying blooms for weddings and other major events, Georgina has had to adapt her entire business since the pandemic began.

“Our business model had to be shaken

up as all our weekly office contracts, along with event floristry came to a halt,” she recalls, of the first wave. With over 10 years’ experience in floristry between them, Georgina and her team had the know-how to make alterations in order to keep the business afloat. “We turned this into a positive and focused our efforts on providing the best door-to-door flower service possible.” Fortunately for Georgina, with the deadly virus placing an invisible barrier between people and their loved ones came a rise in the number of customers looking to send flowers online.

On top of that, there’s been a spike in people looking to blooms to brighten up their homes-cum-workspaces. “Our weekly subscription service has trebled.

People are working from home, so they want fresh flowers for their work space,” she grins, adding: “We have learnt from these subscription customers that when they are buying flowers for themselves they do so to boost their mood and wellbeing, which is music to our ears!”

So, what are the latest flower trends that customers are coveting? “We have

noticed that dried flowers have been very popular; it’s a great trend and sustainable so we love it,” Georgina reveals. Another sustainable trend, she adds, is the desire for British blooms.

“We buy British flowers where possible so this trend is also a winner for us.”

As for Mother’s Day, what blooms should we be looking to send this year? Can there really be trends to follow when what we want is a bouquet that says ‘I love you’ and, possibly, ‘I miss you’? “Mother’s Day is always one of our favourite days of the year as we have such a variety of requests, unlike Valentine’s Day where the tradition tends to be the red rose,” says Georgina. “We think this year we will have lots of house plant orders along with our dried bouquet collection and of course British-grown tulips and lilies will be as popular as ever.”

More quirky than quaint, Deptford’s Little Nan’s Bar is where kitsch, cosy lounge vibes meet Benidorm party holiday (fusty lampshades and armchairs, patriotic bunting, exotic plants, a zebra-patterned sofa and fairylights all feature among the decor). Primarily a cocktail bar serving retro, garish concoctions, and beige, nostalgia-inducing kids’ party foods, the offering lends itself well to afternoon tea with a twist.

Food wise, expect the usual array of finger sandwiches, scones and miniature cakes. But be warned: you’re more likely to find tequila (and rubber ducks, if memory serves) in your teapot than actual tea. 3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in Charlton Church Lane outside number 94.

CACT celebrates World Book Day 2021

Thursday 4 March was World Book Day 2021. This year marked the 24th World Book Day and to help celebrate, Charlton Athletic players Ryan Iniss and Alex Gilbey showed their support by sharing the books they read, why they read and the importance of reading.

Ryan Iniss said: “I think reading is important, whether it’s to extend your vocabulary or express your imagination within.”

Alex Gilbey said: “I am currently reading Shoe Dog by Phil Knight, I really enjoy this because it helps me relax in the evening after training so I can switch off.”

National Literacy Trust research has found that children who have their own books are nearly three times more likely to enjoy reading.

The partnership will help support children whose access to physical books has been made difficult due to school and public library closures during the national lockdown.

Every year Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) is involved with schools and their community to celebrate books and reading and encourage parents and children

of all ages to share stories.

Anthony Quarm, CACT’s Premier League Programme Officer, said: “This year’s World Book Day was a lot different due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but one ever-present factor will be the importance of reading and learning.

“The objective for us remains to present positive and powerful messages about books and reading to young people in order to develop a love of reading.”

Charlton Athletic have been delivering books to schools in Greenwich and Bexley as part of the partnership between the Premier League and National Literacy Trust.

CACT will have donated over 400 books to schools and children by the end of the month.

CACT has also launched a writing competition for school pupils to express themselves and inspire each other to read and share stories.
