An unfortunate by-product of the pandemic is that we’ve all become a lot more sedentary while stuck in our homes. Here to put this right is a movement workshop held online by local community centre Mycenae House. Led by Clara from Planet Hoop, the hour-long Zoom class will see you warm up before undertaking simple exercises to help you strengthen, balance and practice your coordination. Having spent years bringing the Borough of Greenwich to life on paper, award-winning illustrator Nick Ellwood is something of a local treasure – and he’s helping others do the same. While we’re stuck at home, the Old Royal Naval College has put a series of Nick’s illustration lessons on its website, so your little ones can have a go at drawing the likes of lions, superheroes and sea monsters.

The lessons are pre-recorded, so you can take part at a time that suits you. There’s downloadable colouring sheets and dot-to-dots too. If you share the pictures, remember to tag #DrawWithNick on all social media platforms.

Greenwich Theatre takes on Caryl Churchill with a cast of 50 It’s almost exactly a year since Greenwich Theatre was forced to close its doors because of the pandemic. With the exception of a couple of brief interludes during which the theatre was able to reopen for eagerly-anticipated sociallydistanced performances, its ever resourceful artistic director James Haddrell has had to remodel the theatre’s offering, commissioning a steady flow of shows to be performed live to audiences streaming from home. Next up is the theatre’s most ambitious project yet: Caryl Churchill’s The After-Dinner Joke, performed by a cast of 50 actors, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Much like the theatre’s summer offering, which saw a cast of nearly 40 performers bring to life a digital production of Steven Berkoff’s The Secret Love Life of Ophelia, James’s production of The After-Dinner Joke will see 50 actors – all recent drama graduates – recreate the 66-scene play by recording their parts individually from home. And while the theatre’s summer production saw a guest appearance from Greenwich Theatre patron Dame Helen Mirren, James hints that The After-Dinner Joke’s cast of fresh-faced talent will also be joined by a big name in the business.

First transmitted on BBC1 in 1978, The After-Dinner Joke explores the business side of charity work through the lens of a young woman, Selby, who strives ‘to do good’ as a charity worker and avoid getting caught up in political issues. But when money is

involved, is that ever really possible?

“I’ve always loved Caryl Churchill’s work and the chance to produce one of her less performed works was exciting,” says James on choosing the production.

“The After-Dinner Joke was filmed by the BBC in 1978 but, to my knowledge, has never been produced by a theatre, so that makes it a real coup for us,” he says.

Another factor, of course, was the potential the play offered to work with a large cast. “We’ve been intentionally looking for a script with a large cast. Just as we did with The Secret Love Life Of Ophelia, we wanted this to be a vehicle for young and emerging actors who are finding it even harder to get a break in the industry at a time when theatres are still closed, and agents and casting directors are unable to see them at work,” he

adds. “Caryl’s play is perfect for that.”

The After-Dinner Joke is a more complicated show to produce than The Secret Love Life of Ophelia, which saw the cast perform and record their messages to the camera. For starters, certain characters are in dialogue with one another.

“Each performer will film their piece at home – either on their phones or on Zoom if it includes dialogue with other performers – so it’s entirely COVID secure,” explains James. “Then we will edit them all together to create the final piece,” he explains. “It’s a huge jigsaw puzzle but we’ve got an amazing editor in Malcolm Reid of Dragonfly Design, who has helped to storyboard the whole show.”

Unlike your typical theatre production, which sees a cast rehearse together for weeks before the opening night, the performers will first see the fruits of their efforts the day the show is broadcast. The cast are also unpaid, but it’s a chance to get some industry exposure at a time when opportunities are few and far between. And, each participant will also be given a one-toone self-tape masterclass with James.

“As an early career actor the most important things for you to achieve are working and being seen,” points out James. “If you are never seen by agents,

casting directors or producers then it’s very hard to secure your next job, and without a job it’s hard to be seen.

It’s a bit of a vicious circle, and that’s without the impact of the pandemic.”

With 50 performers covering 66 short scenes, how much ‘air time’ each cast member gets will vary. “Some will feature for longer than others, some will perform spoken scenes and some have no dialogue. Some are very physical and some are very simple,” says James. “Caryl herself wrote that she had Monty Python in mind when writing the play so some of the scenes are hilarious and almost surreal.

I think all of the performances will be memorable though.”

is, above all, committed to supporting and facilitating the work of those just starting out. “I hope [the production] continues to demonstrate the commitment that Greenwich Theatre has to those at the start of their careers in an industry which can often seem impossible to break into despite years of expensive training,” he concludes.

Without the applause of an audience, how will James and his 50-strong cast determine the show’s success? “For me, success will be defined by the number of performers who secure work soon afterwards,” he says, fairly. “I know that at least a third of the performers in The Secret Love Life Of Ophelia have worked since [and] several were named in the national press as ones to watch as a direct result of their performances in the show.”

Imaginations at the ready: The Anarchist’s Mobile Library is coming to town in the form of an online immersive audio experience, inviting little ones (aged 6+) to choose their own adventure, make all important decisions and explore multiple different worlds. Run

by Bristol-based theatre practitioner Tessa Bide, the experience was originally brought to life in a prop-filled caravan, but the pandemic has forced Tessa and the company to reimagine it online. But rest assured, kids will be just as awe-struck, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Log on to the virtual Anarchist’s Mobile Library and you’ll be met by the host of the adventure: an animated cat dressed fetchingly in culottes, a Red Riding Hoodstyle cloak and a blue flying hat, who we learn is the resident anarchist librarian.

Voiced by Tessa, the cat-cum-librarian invites you – the trainees – to choose which of six available ‘worlds’ you’d like to venture into first. There’s an underwater adventure, a bug trail, a witch’s kitchen and a space-themed mission among the offering – and pleasingly, there’s time to visit them all. Once done venturing through the pop-up worlds, the newly qualified

anarchist librarians are invited to stay on the site playing games, taking part in challenges and colouring in pictures.

Along the way, participants will have their knowledge gently tested through multiple choice questions. What’s more, they can influence the direction the story takes. (Will they take the quickest, safest route back to shore when their ship sinks? Or will they venture on for precious seaweed?) This, explains Tessa, empowers children to be inspired by literature.

The vaccine rollout is proving “brilliant”, confirms Professor Saul Faust, director of NIHR Southampton Clinical Research Facility, University of Southampton.

During this pandemic he is focusing on delivering COVID-19 Janssen vaccine trials, stressing the jabs are “absolutely essential” in beating the bug.

“Without the vaccine and NHS deployment, we will not be able to prevent further waves and impact on the NHS. Even if the infection becomes a condition like ‘flu, the vaccine will stop people dying and most people becoming so ill they have to go to hospital,” he assured.

Urging everyone to have the vaccine, and not worry about delay between doses, he added: “The vaccination programme is being rolled out in the way that is best for the UK population to try to ease pressure on the NHS and stop people dying.

“It is better to give one dose to more people and then top it up.”

“Really proud to do her bit” is a mum of two involved in the UK’s largest peacetime operation to support the UK Government’s COVID-19 response.

Swansea University scientist by day, Royal Navy reservist Ruth Fleming is key to vaccine roll-out as part of Operation Rescript.

“I was desperate to do my bit. We had a chat about it and, despite having two young kids, knew my husband would support me,” said the 46 yearold, whose furloughed husband Nick, 52, remote teaches their seven year-old son and daughter, aged four.

“I was working really long hours,” explained Ruth, the Joint Military Command Wales Operations Officer. “Each of the vaccines have got different requirements around how they can be distributed and utilised, as well as who can give the vaccine, and the training required.” She added: “I will be at the front of the queue as soon as I get the opportunity to get the vaccine myself.”

A finance chief’s work developing a unique vaccine in Scotland is enriched by “phenomenal” public support.

Working daily with the vaccine task force, father of two David Lawrence leads discussions with the UK Government around manufacture and roll-out of his biotech company’s “inactivated adjuvante” COVID-19 vaccine that saw Livingston-based Valneva “take a different approach”.

He commented: “We’ll ensure absolutely we’ve got a safe and effective vaccine. I think people should feel very encouraged. They should be very confident the safety profile will be absolutely fine.”

The CFO’s 14 year-old daughter Sophie is remote learning while son Cameron, 18, is a university student. “In terms of the support from my family and friends, it’s been phenomenal,” he said.

“You see neighbours and they say ‘great job, keep up the good work’ and that’s all very supportive.

“I feel very blessed to be involved, being some sort of partner in the overall solution.”

Porters, cleaners and drivers are among “unsung heroes” according to someone at the sharp end of the vaccine rollout. “They deliver everything to us and help with the logistics of the operation. They’ve done a massive job and we really need them,” confirmed Public Health Agency Northern Ireland Director of Nursing Deirdre Webb.

“Then we have a huge volunteer workforce helping people get to clinics. They are all the unsung heroes of this,” added the Belfast 57 year-old.

“We hope to see promising results in the springtime. We have small teams helping to deliver the vaccine in patient’s homes.

“Then vaccinations are also being given at GP surgeries and mass vaccination centres.”

“Everyone has been so enthusiastic and very keen to help out,” continued Deirdre, herself set to be trained as a vaccinator. I’ve been in nursing for 40 years and this has been the biggest vaccination programme I’ve ever been involved with.’’

“Empowering children to make decisions and own their destinies has never been more important,” she says, alluding to the options taken away from children because of Covid. “Reading and literature can be brilliant escapism, but can also inspire young people to look out of their tiny bubble and dream big,” she adds. “We take this a step further in The Anarchist’s Mobile Library… We want to inspire them to use a love of reading to open their minds and fight for what they believe in the world – whatever that may be.”

Of course, visiting The Anarchist’s Mobile Library online is little less immersive than visiting in person, when Tessa and the team could enthuse young audiences with their wealth of props and ensure no child got left behind in terms of following the story. The virtual experience moves quickly and requires little ones to draw on their imaginations to conjure the surroundings being described by the host.

“I wanted it to stay in keeping with the original show’s reliance on the imagination,” says Tessa. “[The live show] was quite prop-heavy, and the caravan was decked out incredibly visually, but we journeyed to fantastical places in that caravan with the help of a brilliant sound design from Chris Menes, physical theatre and the children’s imaginations,” she explains. “Whatever the children said, we went with! So we ended up becoming

penguins, drinking flying potion, swimming through a lake of bogeys... we wanted there to be no ‘wrong answers’ and for the children to feel like they were in control.”

Recapturing the sense of unlimited possibilities was the most difficult aspect of adapting the show for online.

“That’s where our creative technician Martin O’Leary from Pervasive Media Studio in Bristol came in, and helped us create this ‘make-your-own-adventure’ set up where children select what happens and what endings they want.”

Despite it being pitched as an ‘immersive audio adventure’, it was important to Tessa for there to be enough happening on screen to engage players visually.

“We quickly realised we needed to have a screen present for the players to choose their choices so we commissioned David Rock to create some really simple holding animations that loop on the screen in between choices,” she says. “They’re visually pleasing and in keeping with the style of the piece – almost like book illustrations that are slightly animated – but they’re designed to not pull focus away from the child’s imagination.”

To ensure the experience is accessible to as many children as possible, Tessa and her team created a British Sign Language (BSL) version with more dynamic captions and actor David Ellington signing the voiceover. And just this month, they’ve launched a Welsh version. “The nice thing about digital

work is that it can evolve over time and we can keep adding more versions to make it really accessible,” says Tessa.

Six months on from the launch of the Anarchist’s Mobile Library (and three months on from the launch of the BSL version), and Tessa is happy with the uptake. “We’ve had good uptake from diverse audiences who have said they would rarely go to the theatre but this has changed their views on what theatre can be,” she beams. “We’ve also had a lot of praise for our education packs which accompany the game and they give players activities to do before, during and after playing, with links to all areas of the curriculum – from science to PSHE, art and creative writing.”

At the core of the experience remains the opportunity for children to take creative control of the story, to influence its outcome and feel inspired by the results.

“We want them to come away feeling prepped and primed to change the world,” laughs Tessa. “Or at least, to have had fun doing something different, playing with family members in a new way, that doesn’t involve all the ideas having to come from their parents!”

Where to find the best takeaway pancakes in Greenwich and Lewisham

The pandemic has robbed us of many things, but Shrove Tuesday (aka Pancake Day) is mercifully not one of them. Safely cocooned in our own homes, Tuesday saw many of us mix batter before frying and flipping it to varying degrees of success. Perhaps your own homemade attempts have left you with a hankering for professionally-made pancakes? Tila High profile chef Dan Doherty’s Deptford venture Tila had little time to bed into the local community before lockdown forced it to close.

Angela had been struggling financially and reached out to the Community Hub, which Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) delivers on behalf of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

The Hub provided much-needed shopping for Angela, who was also going through some personal problems at the time.

The Walk and Talk programme CACT runs in partnership with Royal Greenwich offered those shielding due to Covid-19 or needing support some company for a weekly walk to improve physical activity and reduce isolation.

“It was helping me out quite a lot because I was suffering financially,” Angela explained.

After some time attending the Walk & Talk programme, Angela reduced and steadily stopped drinking alcohol, whilst continuing to attend the programme and receive support and advice.

As staff working for the Community Hub got to know Angela, it became apparent that she was alcohol dependant. Laura Page, one of CACT’s Health Advisors, spoke with

going to Alcoholics Anonymous and I wouldn’t actually be sober today.

“It’s been a Godsend,” Angela went on to say.

Angela had previously tried to reduce her alcohol intake, but suffered with withdrawals.

“My withdrawals were really, really bad but with the help and support from Laura and other colleagues I managed to reduce the amounts of alcohol steadily and safely, and I realised the only way I could actually get better is to stop taking that first drink.

“Even though I physically was dependant, it was the best thing for me to stop, now I have done.

“I did reduce because I’d hit such a low in my life. I was looking

If It wasn’t for this service, I wouldn’t have started going to Alcoholics Anonymous and I wouldn’t actually be sober today at a court case coming up for something that I’d no recollection of, my children weren’t talking to me, or my mother. I was losing my bodily functions. I had hit an all-time low and it took that for me to actually realise that I needed to get better otherwise, to be honest, I probably wouldn’t be here today.”

Angela has now turned her life around and in the future would like to help others who are struggling with alcoholism.

“My life is completely revolving around not drinking again, because I know if I pick up one drink I’ll be back to where I was when we first met and I don’t want that to happen.

It’s just taking a day at a time and concentrating on my sobriety.

“Helping other people, that’s where I want to be in the future.

I’d just like to say thank you again to your services for everything they’ve done for me.”

Bringing coals from Newcastle

Mary Mills My last article was about Ordnance Wharf and the South Met. Gas works and tar works attached to the giant East Greenwich Gas Works on the Greenwich Peninsula. I read somewhere recently that the riverside wall round the gas works was nearly a mile long – and I can sort of believe it although I haven’t measured it. If we keep walking onwards from Ordnance Wharf along the very boring bit of the riverside path round the back of the Dome, it does feel like a long way. I hope no-one minds me commenting that this could be a fantastic bit of the Greenwich riverside if someone bothered opening it up and putting something there, instead of hiding themselves inside the Dome. All I can see now is fences.

But never mind – we soon go past that half boat - an artwork called Slice of Reality. It’s a slice of a sand dredger called Arco Trent and it’s been there since 2000 when it was a piece of art commissioned for the millennium. This whole bit of riverside path is part of the sculpture trail called ‘The Line’ which starts over in the Olympic Park and then crosses over to Greenwich – but then ends before it gets to some of the art works to the south, like Enderby Wharf https://the-line.org/#/artists/4.

As we go along the path at the back of the Dome we encounter another art work called ‘Liberty Grip’ by Gary Hume which is ‘modelled on the limbs of a store mannequin’... a mass-produced, utilitarian object on a colossal scale’.

And as we go on remember the Blackwall Tunnel is below us and I will do something on the history of that in a

future article. Eventually, as we emerge from the path, we come to what is now the clipper jetty, which was called ‘Queen Elizabeth Pier’ but now just seems to be ‘North Greenwich pier’.

Just beyond it is another sculpture – ‘Quantum Cloud’ by Anthony Gormley.

It has been there since 2000 when it was commissioned for the millennium and, personally, I like it a lot.

However at Quantum Cloud, have a look at what it is standing on. Here is one of the few relics of East Greenwich Gas works – some small part of the great jetty which once stood here.

The basic raw material of any gas works was of course coal. For Thameside gas works this came down in vast quantities by ship from ports servicing the Durham and Northumberland coal fields. It was a major industry and one which gets very little attention.

Even in peace time and good weather it was a dangerous journey and the crews of these ships were some of the toughest and most exploited, yet ignored, members of the industrial

workforce. South Met.’s House journal has occasional articles from young men – usually office workers in the company – who had persuaded a collier captain to let them come along for a trip from Seaham to Greenwich.

They were routinely terrified all the way down the coast reaching south London with some relief. I hope to quote some of these in another future article. I am sure the crews enjoyed frightening these landsmen and there are other tales of the horrors of the passage ‘the ship is straining plunging and labouring heavily into the high sea.. we are watching for her to clear herself from the mass of water she has shipped... we took a heavy sea aboard right aft and smashed our life raft’.

They had been coming down the coast with coal since medieval times and by the 19th century the river was crowded out with ships. I have written elsewhere about the regulatory system

which the Greenwich Harbour Masters house was part of. At Charlton the hulk, Atlas, clanked out in the river in a big transhipment operation. In the 20th century all the big gas companies – South Met., Chartered and Wandsworth (and the power stations) - had their own fleets of vessels doing the round trip from Durham. When they stopped coming in the 1980s we had the awful shock of an empty and deserted river – which continues to this day.

South Met had its own fleet of collier ships – and I will probably have to leave the details about them for another article. The company’s first gas works was in the Old Kent Road – inland but on the Grand Surrey Canal.

They had begun with a second hand barge called Thomas and then began to charter boats to carry the coal.

When I wrote here last year about the West Greenwich gas works – where Waitrose is now on Deptford Creek – I

described how this site became South Met’s lighterage department from 1887 and how they operated three tugs, a dock tug –which worked on the surrey canal - and over a hundred barges of various types. The company launched its first tug the ‘George Livesey’ in 1887 but others followed.

The collier ships themselves were obviously much larger ocean going vessels. A new collier brought into service in 1946 could carry 4,050 tons of coal – twice the capacity of older vessels. It could be loaded in a day and a half and could be discharged at East Greenwich in 12 hours using four grabs. She would make three round trips a fortnight. The coal was delivered to jetties at Greenwich and at Rotherhithe (where their huge jetty still survives). the works by special locomotives – and perhaps that had better be the subject of another article as well as all the others I’ve been promising.

So – the great jetty at east Greenwich gas works. This stood on the site of what is now the clipper pier and it was certainly one of the sights as you went down river. It was built in the late 1880s with the rest of this new works. It was built by Appleby Brothers – whose engineering works on the west bank of the peninsula I described a few months ago.

It provided facilities for unloading ships with coal from the north east and for loading ships with coke or ballast. At first ships were unloaded by men in the hold with buckets and the coal was then craned to railway wagons. In 1903 it was extended and

became T shaped. On the new arm were four travelling hydraulic cranes with a grab to lift the coal from the ships. The coal was discharged to four large overhead hoppers and then loaded into railway wagons below. After the Second World War the jetty was altered again to discharge oil tankers.

The jetty could deal with a million tons of coal a year and about a quarter of it went into barges to be taken to the company’s other works. Ships were berthed out in the river at high tide and as the tide fell they rested on the mud.

I have been told many times by men who worked there that the whole operation was remarkably quiet and that the hydraulic cranes were completely silent. I have always understood that – being a gas works –no electrical equipment was allowed www.weekender.co.uk

here. But I don’t know exactly how the operation was powered. The jetty was pulled down for the millennium and the new clipper pier built – but it is difficult to know if it could have been adapted for any other use as just the supports for the Gormley artwork remain.

A few years ago local gas historian Brian Sturt highlighted the gas workers war memorial window in Southwark Cathedral. This dates from 1923 and is in the Lady Chapel. 32 of the war dead were seafarers on company ships bringing the coal to London. A great deal is written about the hard working conditions and the suffering of the men who mined the coal and the men who worked in the retort houses of the gas works. We hear next to nothing of the heroic men of the merchant marine without whom neither the mines nor the gas works could have functioned.

Once the National Grid Electricity Transmission PLC (London Power Tunnels 2) (Circuit 1 – Wimbledon to New Cross) Compulsory Purchase Order 2019 has become operative, National Grid Electricity Transmission PLC (hereinafter called “the Acquiring Authority”) may acquire any of the land described in Schedule 1 above by executing a general vesting declaration under section 4 of the Compulsory Purchase (Vesting Declarations) Act 1981 (“the Act”). This has the effect, subject to paragraphs 3 and 5 below, of vesting the land in the Acquiring Authority at the end of the period mentioned in paragraph 2 below.

Notices concerning general vesting declaration 2. As soon as may be after the Acquiring Authority execute a general vesting declaration, they must serve notice of it on every occupier of any of the land specified in the declaration (except land where there is one of the tenancies described in paragraph 4) and on every person who gives them information relating to the land in pursuance of the invitation contained in the confirmation notice of the order. When the service of notices of the general vesting declaration is completed, a period specified in the declaration, of not less than three months, will begin to run. On the first day after the end of this period the land described in the declaration will, subject to what is said in paragraphs 3 and 5, vest in the Acquiring Authority together with the right to enter on the land and take possession of it. In such circumstances, the vesting date for the land which is the subject of the counter-notice will be determined in accordance with Schedule A1.

Modification with respect to certain tenancies 4. In the case of certain tenancies, the position stated above is subject to modification. The modifications apply where the tenancy is either a “minor tenancy”, i.e. a tenancy for a year or a yearly tenancy or a lesser interest, or “a long tenancy which is about to expire”. The latter expression means a tenancy granted for an interest greater than a minor tenancy but having on the vesting date a period still to run which is not more than the period specified in the declaration for this purpose (which must be more than a year). In calculating how long a tenancy has still to run, where any option to renew or to terminate it is available to either party, it shall be assumed that the landlord will take every opportunity open to him to terminate the tenancy while the tenant will use every opportunity to retain or renew his interest.

The modifications are that the Acquiring Authority may not exercise the right of entry referred to in paragraph 2 in respect of land subject to a tenancy described in paragraph 4 unless they first serve notice to treat in respect of the tenancy and then serve every occupier of the land with a notice of their intention to enter and take possession after the period (not less than three months from the service of the notice) specified in the notice. The right of entry will be exercisable at the end of that period. The vesting of the land will be subject to the tenancy until the end of that period or until the tenancy comes to an end, whichever happens first.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out a service pipe relay.

2. The Order will come into operation on 22nd February 2021 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However, the works are expected to take 7 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading). in Dumbreck Road outside 105.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Glenesk Road, Elibank Road, Westmount Road and vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich has Made an Order under section 247 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 ("the Act"), entitled the Royal Borough of Greenwich (Stopping Up of Highways) (No.21) (Hadden Road) Order 2021.

2. The general effect of the Order will be to authorise the stopping up of an area of the highway located south-west of the multi-storey car park on Hadden Road, shown hatched on the deposited plan. The term “stopping-up” means that this area of highway would cease to be public highway.
