Greenwich & Lewisham Weekender is an independent weekly newspaper, covering the boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham.

Many of us are missing our gym studios and the healthy boost we gained from working out with others. But the lockdown doesn’t mean giving in to muscle wastage. Barre is a fitness hybrid derived from ballet, which incorporates elements of yoga, pilates and strength training.

It’s also an excellent option for working out from home as it requires very little space. Greenwich studio The Hour is offering a full programme of classes online while its physical space remains closed. Among the offering is a 60-minute ballet barre class held on Sundays at 11am – a chance for attendees to engage in full body strengthening and toning from home. All you need to participate is a mat.

Calling all future astronauts If you’re worried about your little one missing out on vital schooling time, this workshop hosted by the Royal Observatory will at least ensure they know their planets. The make-and-do session will take attendees through the key planets, moons and stars in the solar system, then help them draw a miniature model, placing all the planets in their rightful places. All you’ll need to take part is a sheet of A4 paper, scissors, glue and selection of pens and pencils. An astronomer will be on hand to answer any burning questions that arise along the way.

Connect your breath to your voice Community singing instructor Emma Bond has already helped her community stay connected since the pandemic began by holding daily Zoom sing-alongs. Now, the singer and choir leader has launched a new fortnightly workshop, ‘Breath and Voice’, encouraging attendees to engage in effective, healthy breathing. The online workshop is available for all ages and ability levels, with attendees encouraged to wear loose clothing and have a yoga mat or towel ready for floor work. Emma says: ‘Never before have we needed to think about how effectively we breathe. By developing our breathing techniques we can travel towards emotional stability and mental well being.’

It’s never too late to put on a pair of dancing shoes

Ever secretly longed to be a dancer? It isn’t too late to start.

From ballet to lindy hop, African fusion to contemporary, Greenwich Dance offers a broad range of adult dance classes – all currently taking place online – and welcomes those with little or no experience. Whether you’re a relapsed regular or a 60+ first timer who has, until now, dodged the dance floor, the community-focused organisation will welcome you with open arms, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Greenwich Dance has in fact been in the borough for 26 years, offering classes to children and adults alike for most of that time.

“It has always felt really important to us to champion the ‘everyday artist’ and give everyone, no matter their previous dance experience, a chance to find enjoyment and creativity through dance.

But this has never felt more important than now,” says chief executive of Greenwich Dance Melanie Precious.

“When COVID hit, my incredible team had classes up and running online within a week. Suddenly we realised that our class programme wasn’t really about the learning of a new skill – that’s the luxurious part. It was about the necessity of being with friends, having time for you, and moving an aching body which had spent hours hunched over a kitchen table. And so we changed the model, dropping the prices to ensure everyone with the ability to get online could access a class and feel part of our very caring dance community,” she says.

The varied programme, which spans classical dance forms to foreign imports and offers specialist classes for older participants, is all thanks to Greenwich Dance producer Chenube-Ruth, who Melanie credits for bringing fresh ideas for classes to the table. “Our choice of classes is always fed by consumer demand, and if a class isn’t popular, we shift and change,” says Melanie. “We want to serve the whole community and be representative of the breadth that is dance. It’s not just about ballet or tap. Lindy is one of our most popular classes and draws in a real community.

There’s also African fusion, which Melanie describes as “joyous”, adding: “Maria who runs that class is a beautiful and caring artist who really embodies the style and spirit.” It’s Maria who also runs the over 55’s classes, which focus on on de-stressing, breath and stretching.

“One class I definitely think is underused is the lovely parents and babies class with Lizz and baby Max,” says Melanie.

“If you’re a new mum struggling within your four walls, desperate for

company, do give this online class a try. It serves as an alternative to a soft play date especially now in the depths of winter when we can’t get out.”

Not all elements of a dance class can be shifted online. Even if the sense of community can be replicated in the virtual world, there’s the lack of a dance partner to contend with. “Admittedly the dancers can’t dance together unless living together,” agrees Melanie, pointing out that many couples sign up together to take part in ballroom and lindy hop.

For some dancers, such as new parents, the online location of the classes is what enables them to be able to attend.

Similarly, being able to take part in dance classes without being physically present has enabled those who live further afield to join in. “We have new people and people from outside of the borough joining us which is exciting,” beams Melanie, adding that she and the team are so inspired by this, they’re looking to expand the offering beyond dance, to offer online quizzes, screenings of dance films and masterclasses with

industry professionals. “Geography is no longer an issue so why not celebrate the fact that time starts here in Greenwich and invite people from all over the world to spend their time with us?”

As for pre-existing members, what percentage has followed Greenwich Dance online? “We have a very loyal following in some of our classes – particularly our over 55’s group and contemporary. But admittedly behaviour patterns have changed and every time new restrictions come in, people’s routines are knocked out of sync.”

What would you say to someone who is curious but hesitant to join a dance class online? “Friends are waiting for you,” Melanie grins. “What have you got to lose?! Our classes cost £4, or if you are feeling the pinch you can opt to pay £2, or, if you are finding times really hard, we invite you to attend for free and invest that time in yourself,” she adds. “What you will not find is a row of professional dancers in tutus looking down their noses at you. The classes are filled with lovely, creative

people just like you.” Melanie and the team at Greenwich Dance have found the positives and seized every opportunity to keep their community dancing together in what has been a dire time for the performing arts. With less money coming in from customers and no fixed date in sight for when venues are likely to admit in-person audiences again, what motivates them to keep going?

“It feels like part of our civic duty right now. Dance is what we do. We can’t feed people or vaccinate people, but we can move them,” says Melanie. “So, we will continue to do everything we can to make life that little bit more creative and people that little bit more connected at a time where it feels like all of life’s luxuries have been taken away. It’s the least we can do.”

RMG’s SENsory Social Club is leaving no one behind Run by Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG), the SENsory Social Club is a weekly meet-up for adults and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). In ‘normal times’, the group meets once a week at the Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre for the opportunity to interact with the collection’s treasure trove of artworks and maritime memorabilia in a relaxed and playful environment. Since Covid has driven us all indoors the team behind the initiative has been determined to deliver the scheme online – and not leave any participants behind, writes Holly O’Mahony…

“It is integral that clubs such as the SENsory Social Club continue during this time of disconnection and isolation, as the club is a chance for its members to develop social and communication skills as well as produce lasting friendships through the use of our vast collection,” points out Matthew Cahill, collections learning manager at RMG. While many of us have welcomed the opportunity to continue engaging with our favourite activities online – signing up to virtual dance classes, art lessons, meditation mornings and more – for many members of the SEND

community who require additional support, this transition has not been so easy. Still, Matthew and the team are determined to make it work.

SENsory Social Club sessions still take place on Friday lunchtimes (1:30pm – 2:30pm), and are still aimed at participants aged 14+. But now they’re held over Zoom, with RMG advising that a parent, guardian or member of support staff is present to support the group member in accessing and engaging with the class.

The core pull of the offering remains the same: participants are brought

together to engage with a creative adventure inspired by the museum’s collections. Even in the online sphere, it’s a safe space to make new friends, to be immersed in storytelling, music, crafts and games, and be inspired to learn new skills.

“The task of adapting the club to an online session did have its challenges,” admits Matthew. “But those challenges were overcome through consultation and collaboration with the members and their stakeholders. Though the migration to online programming was not ideal for all learning styles and abilities,

we learnt that preparing the members and their support network prior to [each] session of what they were going to be doing helps the session run successfully,” he says, adding that the team runs two different types of sessions to cater for the different communication levels of the learners.

In fact, as a result of the careful planning that’s been poured into adapting the SENsory Social Club for the digital sphere, some aspects of the sessions even work better online.

“When the session was delivered in its original guise, it ran as individual one-offs, but since we have gone digital, the relationships between the members have strengthened, which has allowed us to create more project-based activities – such as developing jingles and radio plays – which have been successfully received online,” says Matthew.

The success of the online format has encouraged Matthew and the team to share findings. “Previously, we wouldn’t have promoted or shared the outcomes from the session, but since working digitally we have

learnt the importance of sharing and celebrating these outcomes.” Doing so has not only given existing members visibility and a voice, but encouraged new members to join in, too.

“Sensory social club previously had average attendance of nine to 12 members a week, but since we have gone digital we are now running two sessions a week at full capacity,” beams Matthew. “The members look forward to visiting virtually each week and supporting partners such as Bexley Mencap have said that it gives structure to their clients’ week.”

Regardless of your ability levels or your circumstances, having a structured week and something in the diay to look forward to is, at this time, essential.

Young Greenwich offer free calls to young people

Young Greenwich, the universal youth service Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) delivers in partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Oxleas NHS and METRO Charity is offering free calls to young people in the Borough who need to speak to someone.

Youth workers will make the calls and speak to the young people about any issues they may have whilst in lockdown.

Young Greenwich’s youth hubs are currently closed due to the lockdown, however this initiative allows young people to stay in contact with youth workers and benefit from continued social interaction, virtually.

Since the start of the pandemic, Young Greenwich has kept in contact with its young people by offering a number of virtual services for them to keep engaged in. From weekly Instagram Live sessions to one-to-one calls, the service has continued to ensure young people are interacted with during lockdowns.

Shade Thompson, Young Greenwich’s Marketing Officer, said: “It’s important that young people can turn to someone for advice, or just for a general chat about things. We were pleased to launch this initiative because we know how lockdown can have an effect on the mental health of our young people.”

Strike breaker or visionary?

Carrying on with our journey round the Peninsula riverside we have just about reached the edge of the huge complex which was east Greenwich gas works. This was in effect a group of factories around a central coal gas manufacturing plant – and one which was not only very large but very ‘modern’ too, and which aimed at being at the very best in the world.

In August 2019 I did an article for Weekender about the building of the gas works on the virgin marshland and I also did several about our poor doomed gasholder. I thought however that it might be useful at this stage to give a bit of background to the gas works - who built it and some of the politics involved. This gas works was something special and I think we should say so.

In the 1880s when East Greenwich gas works was built London gas was almost entirely produced by private companies operating under their own Acts of Parliament and East Greenwich was built in the late 1880s by the South Metropolitan Gas Company. They had originated in the late 1820s as a small works in the Old Kent Road and like most other early gas companies management was incompetent and corrupt. By the mid-1830s the works was ruinous and the Board appointed a young man, Thomas Livesey, as manager.

Working with a new Board Thomas got management to a high standard but more importantly set the Company up for a prosperous future by concentrating on supplying gas to the new housing estates springing up all over south London. He died in 1871 and the role of manager was passed to his son, George.

George Livesey was 37 when he took over at Old Kent Road. He had been brought up on site at the gas works where the family lived, I don’t think he ever went to school and was on the gas works staff by his early teens. He was religious and a leading London temperance activist; very clever, charismatic and – well - unorthodox.

by South Met’s largest shareholder.

Trying to summarise everything George did to change the 19th century gas industry would be a very, very long article.

I will just stick to the highlights. One of his earliest ideas was reform of gas company finances whereby, on his advice, the Board of Trade made it mandatory for gas company profit distribution to be fixed to a sliding scale whereby gas prices had to go down before profits could go up. That more or less ensured that George was hated by every other gas company board in the country.

This was not helped when he turned up to other gas company shareholders’ meetings to deliver long speeches outlining their management failings. He continued with his ideas for reform – nothing went untouched. Technologies were revolutionised, gas holders got

bigger and bigger, and the approach to domestic customers was changed.

In the mid 19th century Government was keen to move the many small stinky gas works out of the built up area and to consolidate these small companies into large ones which would build huge efficient out of town gas works. South Met was one of the smallest of the London gas companies and it was assumed that they would soon be swallowed up by one of the big companies. Really? In a remarkably short time South Met had taken over most companies in South London (some, like South Suburban and Croydon, remained independent but firmly in George’s control). He was then poised to take over the giant north London companies but at that point even the Board of Trade was alarmed and intervened to prevent it.

East Greenwich was of course South Met’s big efficient works on a greenfield site. Built to show the world what a gas works could be and to have bigger gasholders than hated Beckton Works – down river and on the north bank. More on that in a future article.

In the late 1880s George took on workplace reform with big ideas and a hatred of trade unions. The result was the ‘1889 gas workers strike’. I’m happy to write a lot sometime about the complications of what was technically not a strike. However, it ensured that George is best known as a strike breaker and he has become a major villain of Labour history. In the past I have seen Agitprop plays where he is depicted as a classic top hatted capitalist boss.

To be honest I think he was a lot more complicated than that and that he never forgot his South London childhood.

union but there was a work place profit sharing scheme – again tied to efficiency – and with home ownership incentives included. There was a structure of workplace consultation and – most remarkably – by 1900 a third of South Met’s Board was directly elected by members of the workforce who were called the ‘co-partners’. The company offered a whole life’s support for workers.

Maternity and medical schemes were supplemented by top class sports and recreation facilities, holiday homes, pensions and a burial fund. Even in the 1970s at the last gasp of nationalised gas manufacture, locally, workers in the old ex-South Met works felt themselves rather superior to those who worked for lesser companies and lesser gas works.

In due course George was knighted – but for his work as a leading temperance reformer rather than his gas works revolution (you see, there was the, um ...reputation for strike breaking). He died in 1908 – and the whole South Met workforce walked behind his coffin to Nunhead Cemetery where his grave is almost the first thing you see from the entrance.

One of his legacies was to fund a Professorship at Leeds University, while other money went to the ‘co-partners’.

His statue stood in the Old Kent Road gas works but a few years ago it was craned across the road to the library which he donated to the local council – as long as it had lots of gas books in it. Of interest is that when Southwark Council tried to sell the library building off a few years ago they discovered that George had had the foresight, a hundred years earlier, to make it very very very difficult for them to do that. Today it still carries his name.

And then there is the ghost in the Dome - I hope I haven’t told this story in Weekender

before. In the later 1990s, as the Dome was planned, a party of journalists were taken round the site. One of them asked if there were any ghosts and Kaye Murch, who was showing them round, said ‘oh yes, Mary Mills knows all about that’ . So – the next morning I opened the Guardian to find this quoted . Thanks Kaye!

In the next couple of days I was doing TV shows from the old Livesey Library with George’s portrait on show and questions as to which bit of the site he was haunting. It was lot of fun actually and once the Dome was built I had several happy mornings with the Dome press officer (an old friend) talking to Psychic News and the like. This included a river trip with the John Dunn show, and much else. We decided that as George had enjoyed seaside holidays at Eastbourne, he most likely haunted the seaside zone in the Dome.

I have a bit of a feeling though that George wouldn’t have been impressed. I don’t think he would have wanted anything to do with ghosts and that haunting wasn’t really his thing. However I have been trying to say for a long time and, really do think, that he was a very remarkable south Londoner - even though we have to take a deep, deep breath to forgive the strike breaking! When I started to research the gas industry I used to go to the SEGAS office in Croydon to see the company minute books. They were full of boring details on coal supplies and the like but when George was present it all somehow changed. Even in those dull old minutes what came through was how he made it exciting.

So – please please don’t think that the following articles on the East Greenwich gas works will be boring. George was anything but and it was his show piece works. www.weekender.co.uk
