While going out for a dance isn’t currently possible, live music can still be found if you know where to look.

AAJA Deptford, a local communityfocused radio station, is keeping the decks spinning in lockdown, live-streaming sets into people’s homes for free. Run by Lewisham locals Sam and Owen, the concept has occupied an arch in thriving Deptford Market Yard since 2018, and in normal times, operates as a bar, record store, live-streaming venue and performance space.

Holly O’Mahony: Casting your minds back to 2018, what inspired you to create a local radio station and performance space in Deptford?

AAJA Deptford is committed to offering a truly global sound, and, in a bid to make the station diverse and relevant to the whole community, the pair hand over the airwaves to lesser-known artists, national treasures and everyone in between.

HOM: In ‘normal times’, AAJA Deptford is a live radio station, bar and performance space. How do the various elements complement one another and what made you decide to create it as a multifaceted concept?

Holly O’Mahony speaks to AAJA Deptford to find out more about the station…

AAJA Deptford: South-east London and Deptford have always been a melting pot of creatives and musicians. With the city and Deptford going through changes, along with new developments, we felt now more than ever the importance of opening a space for like-minded people to connect and share music.

AD: Having both worked in the music industry for a long time, we have either performed as DJs and radio hosts, worked as event www.weekender.co.uk

organisers or danced as ravers.

So it felt completely natural that the three would gel together. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t like a drink and a bit of food while listening to great music?

This year, we are also re-launching our record label AAJA Records, which includes releases from both established and up-and-coming local talent. The first release is coming from local supporters of the rich south-east London underground electronic music scene, Controlled Weirdness.

HOM: Since lockdown, you’ve been live-streaming sets for people to listen and dance to at home.

Can you tell us a bit about this?

AD: We’ve always been a livestreaming platform. This was the original concept of the space.

When the first lockdown happened, we were forced to adapt and quickly set up an alternative platform to allow our hosts to stream remotely from home while we were closed down.

This also saw our online community grow, and allowed for people to network and maintain connection with each other during the pandemic.

HOM: Your live sets have contributed to keeping afterdark culture alive during the pandemic. What drove you to keep live music going during these very isolating times?

AD: As we ourselves are avid listeners as well as DJs and event organisers, it felt more important than ever to continue to share music and collaborate with other DJs, artists and listeners. In these very disconnected and uncertain times, we must keep dancing, listening and sharing music.

HOM: Has the lockdown had any positive effects on your station?

AD: We’ve had some really positive feedback from listeners and new radio hosts alike.

With AAJA Radio now moving towards running 24/7 globally.

HOM: Ultimately, what do you hope listeners take away from live-streaming your shows?

AD: We would hope they go away feeling inspired, connected and part of our continually growing community.

All that glitters

Greenwich-based artist Mah Rana has been asking the same question of her subjects since 2002: “Can you tell us about the jewellery you are wearing?”. Over the past 19 years, Mah’s ongoing project Meanings and Attachments has taken her to 11 countries around the world, over which time she’s photographed over 2,000 people wearing a piece of jewellery that’s significant to them, displaying the pictures in a pop-up exhibition often on that same day. The latest iteration of the project has seen Mah return to Greenwich, to oversee portraits of her latest cohort going on show outside NOW Gallery, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Twenty-three portraits of Greenwich residents peer out onto Peninsula Square from the glass fronting of NOW Gallery. The exhibition is particularly fitting, coming at a time when we’re once again craving yet avoiding interactions with those outside our homes. It’s also a particularly welcome injection of outdoor culture at a time when all galleries remain closed in compliance with the lockdown restrictions.

The portraits themselves, however, were in fact taken back in 2018, when NOW Gallery curator Jemima Burrell commissioned Mah to curate a version of Meanings and Attachments intended to adorn the hoarding boards lining the construction sites dotted around Peninsula Square as part of the regeneration work taking place there. But the project got put on hold, and so this is the first time the works are being seen by the public.

When the project began back in 2002, Mah had been working as an artist for some time, and already had an interest in making jewellery the focus of her work, but she has never involved the public in her art before. “I was invited by Fabrica Gallery in Brighton to come up with an idea for a public participation event,” she recalls. “I thought it would be interesting to invite people to take part in an exhibition,

to expand on why we wear jewellery and why it’s important to us,” she says.

It was clear to Mah from the start that focusing on the stories of real people would make the project more interesting.

“I thought it would be a one-off thing, but when I was writing up the stories and looking at the photographs, I was so taken aback with the stories people had shared, I felt quite humbled,” she says. “I decided to continue with it and set it up as a standalone project which I could run as a series of one-day events in public spaces – a shopping mall, a library or a museum – setting up for the day and inviting people to take part.”

Connecting her camera to a portable digital printer, Mah usually works to print the portraits and stories immediately, so those featured can see their picture hanging in the popup exhibition before they leave.

“It’s really rare for people to say no, which is great,” she says. “As long as people feel safe [and trust] that their story is being respected, that I’m genuine, that the project is genuine and that it’s done with care, they’re happy to say yes.”

Why the focus on jewellery compared to, say, a person’s coat or bag? “I have

an interest in jewellery because of the materials it’s made from [which are often] metals and stones,” Mah explains. “They have an intrinsic quality that lasts longer than the wearer. Jewellery can be passed down through generations, it can hold, or be a conduit, to different people, carrying stories along generations,” she says.

“It’s this longevity of the materiality of jewellery that gives it its uniqueness.”

as somebody wearing a particular broach because it matched their outfit that day, or that the piece had been given to them by a grandmother who had passed away,” she explains.

Mah’s work with Meanings and Attachments has not gone unrecognised.

The project was awarded the Nobel Jewellery Peace Prize in 2014, an award introduced in 2010 by Swedish arts organisation Diagonal Art Project to recognise the positive work being done by those in the jewellery field.

In some cases, Mah has even found that in being prompted to talk about their jewellery, the wearer becomes conscious of what it means to them again. “Someone once said ‘thank you for letting me fall in love with my jewellery again’. She was wearing a bangle she’d been wearing for years. It takes telling somebody why you’re wearing it that brings back nice memories.”

Back home in Greenwich, Mah had to whittle down the 50 photographs she’d originally taken to just 23 for the NOW Gallery exhibition, to fit with the specs of the gallery walls. The selection, she says, came down to ensuring she exhibited a diverse range of stories – each image is accompanied by a short description of what the item means to the wearer – rather than basing the decision on aesthetics.

Having photographed over 2,000 people since the project began, Mah says it’s not particular stories which stand out, but the experience of collective storytelling which makes the project so special. “I’ve met so many people for a short period of time, but it’s often quite an intense exchange,” she says. “They share a story and allow me to take their photograph, and I feel very humbled by that.”

project in Greenwich, an area she loves for its diversity, community spirit and rich culture. In the meantime, she’s inviting the public to get involved with the project online, taking a photo of themselves in a sentimental piece of jewellery (or if camera shy, just taking a picture of the jewellery), then uploading it to Instagram with a short description on why it’s significant, tagging @meaningsandattachments and @nowgalleryse10, to enable Mah to add it to her growing archive.

Meanings and Attachments remains on show outside NOW Gallery until January 31. For participants, it’s a reminder to appreciate the objects we hold dear, remembering why we value them. Join the Charlton squad for Race the Euros Join the Charlton Squad to take on 13 other football clubs in London and raise funds for Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT).

The Race the Euros event will see 14 London Football Clubs race across Europe in a virtual activity challenge. Working in squads of 23, each Club aim to be the fastest to cover the 6,720 miles that separate all of the Euro 2021 Host Cities.

The event is scheduled to run during March and participants can log miles in nearly 80 different activities (subject to any Government guidelines). We will be monitoring the government guidance on exercise and outdoor activities over the next few weeks and constantly reviewing and adapting the list of approved activities to make sure that the challenge can be completed safely and in line with all legislation.

When the challenge is live an event portal will chart the progress of each Club team and as each squad reaches a host city, information about that city and its footballing

All funds raised from the event will support CACT’s work supporting the most vulnerable in the community.

The major shipyard under the Dome

Way back in April 2019 I wrote an article for this paper about the massive dry dock which was once at the tip of the Peninsula, and the remains of it which must now lie under the Dome. I thought it might be an idea to revisit it and talk a bit about the people who built it and some of the ships they built there, The Dock dated from the late 1860s.

In 1868 the Greenwich Board of Works gave permission for a ‘graving dock’ to be built by Messrs. Lewis and Stockwell.

They had a ship building yard across the river on Bow Creek and were looking to expand. It is not always clear where they built individual vessels because most sources describe their ships as built at ‘Blackwall’ which could describe their site on either side of the river. However they had apparently built a number of vessels at the Bow Creek site before 1868.

The yard had been started by Alfred Lewis, and John Stockwell although Lewis seems to have been the leading partner. He had originally been trained at Samuda Brothers Poplar shipyard and then in 1860 opened his own premises at Bow Creek building iron barges and small steamships. Many of these steamers are listed in newspaper reports but many others did not get this publicity.

Some of their ships built at Bow include: In 1863: Elizabeth. Built for Cambrian Railway ferry to carry railway passengers across the river at Aberdovey to Ynyslas. With engines by James Watt and Co., but also rigged for sail.

for the Woolwich Steam-packet Company. To carry passenger traffic on the Thames. It took 460 passengers.

Stockwell and Lewis also employed young men who later went on to distinguished careers. One example was Barrow Emmanuel, who was their Chief Draughtsman until 1867. He trained originally in Portsmouth Dockyard and was then articled to George Rennie and Sons. He then graduated in arts at Trinity College, Dublin. From 1867 he was senior partner in Davis and Emmanuel. The firm carried out much important work including the City of London School (on the Embankment by Blackfriars Bridge and many office blocks, and public buildings. I am fascinated by this – we probably think of those who worked in shipbuilding, even the supervisors, as hands-on types doing traditional work, but Barrow Emmanuel was clearly middle-class, with an arts degree from a prestige university. Perhaps we need to look at ship building and design as a profession which could attract and use clever young men – who could apply all sorts of new ideas in an era of great change.

In 1869 Alfred Lewis designed a dry dock for his company on a new site in Greenwich. The site chosen for had been used by defunct gun manufacturers, the Blakeley Ordnance Co. Is it perhaps the ‘Shipbuilding and Engineering Yard’ advertised for ‘a very trifling rent’ earlier in 1868? It was in Blackwall Lane with river frontage and a ‘substantial wide jetty’ and would provide space for ‘the construction of vessels of the Warrior class’ which rather implies they wanted shipbuilders with considerable ambition – because Warrior is the huge innovative warship built in 1859 just across the river from the Dome and now berthed in Portsmouth as a tourist attraction. In late 1868 Lewis and Stockwell asked Greenwich Vestry permission to ‘stop up an ancient highway’ - presumably the end of Blackwall Lane.

The new dry dock was to be 400 feet long, and was in operation by the early 1870s. By 1881 there were also ‘punching and rolling sheds, blacksmith’s shop, boiler house, fixed machines

store, engine and boiler house, saw mills and an office building’. It was a very substantial establishment of which Greenwich could be proud.

The dock was said to be able to take ships of 2,000- 3,000 tons and repair work was done through contract with various shipping lines. They employed 200-250 men there and claimed to have a 24 hour turn round period for repairs. They also claimed to specialise in high class paint work on ‘gentlemen’s yachts’ - for instance, they said they had done the gilding on the private yacht of W.H.Smith, book seller and First Lord of the Admiralty, no less.

At first a great deal of work was carried out at the new Greenwich shipyard. A line of boats was ordered by the Great Eastern Railway Co for the Harwich service and paddle steamer Orwell was completed and began work. In 1873 they launched Madeira a paddle steam transport for the Brazilian Government built ‘in a manner recently approved by the Admiralty for the Royal Navy’. Her sister ship, Purus, was near completion and there was an order for five screw steamers for the Machae and Compos Railway in Brazil.

Sadly tragedy struck later that year. A rivet falling into a pile of shavings set off a major fire and some ships destined for Brazil were destroyed. Stockwell and Lewis filed for bankruptcy before the end of the year (although I tend to be a bit suspicious of fires and bankruptcy).

The yard limped on until it was finally bought by the South Met. Gas Company at the order of the House of Lords in the 1880s. Stockwell had left the partnership by the time of the bankruptcy and was replaced by Frederic Hyams. But that’s another story.

I first discovered Stockwell and Lewis and the ships they built in Greenwich through a chance encounter with a Tasmanian web site. She was called Bulli and wasn’t easy to research. Three different people (thank you to all of them) tried to find her Lloyds registration, and never did – so how did she get from Greenwich to Sydney?

The web site was that of the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service and it described some wrecks on their coast.

One of these, Bulli, had been built by what they described as ‘Lewis and Stackwell at Greenwich, England’. They said she was built in 1872 and was registered at Sydney, New South Wales, with an Australian coal mining company - the Bulli Company. We forget that coal mining took place far and beyond north east England and that we built collier ships for that trade too! Bulli was steel hulled with twin compound steam engines. She was also rigged as a three masted topsail schooner, measured 180’ x 23.2’ x 15.9’ and was 486.77 tons gross, 337/06 tons net.

bow has collapsed but two thirds of her hull is intact up to the upper deck. Her bridge and engine room are still there, as are the rudder and the stern. She is now a specialist site for leisure diving.

I have a huge amount of material about Bulli, her wreck and the consequent enquiry. This came from the Tasmania Tourist authority and I was pleased to be able to help them identify her engines as having been made by the Limehouse firm of Ravenhill and Hodgson. The name on the actual engine was too corroded for them to read accurately.

There are several web sites about Bulli.

When I started to research the dry dock in the 1990s the only ship I knew which had been built there was the Bulli. I now know of so many more – this was a major shipyard which now lies under the Dome, but who knew!

We also don’t really take in that all our place names are not only replicated, annoyingly, in the US but also in Australia and New Zealand – and, of course, Tasmania. Bulli was wrecked in June 1877 when carrying coal from Newcastle to Launceston. Captain Randall was forced by ‘heavy southerly gales’ to shelter at Erith Island in the Kent Group.

When he tried to leave the ship was forced back and, rounding Erith Island, she struck a rock. Eventually, despite efforts by the crew, the forward bulkhead failed and they abandoned ship. There was an attempt to refloat her in 1879 but this failed.

She lies at the northern end of West Cove in the Bass Strait in 16 metres of water. She is said to be remarkably intact and stands 5 meters off the shore. Her
