Canary Wharf’s dazzling light display January can feel like a cold, miserable time of year, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Head to Canary Wharf, where a public outdoor light spectacle ‘Connected by Light’ continues to shine bright. The12week event is a chance to browse nine new light-focused artworks designed by UK artists. Among the offering is Mandylights’ exploration of colour progression Tetra Park, Hawthorn’s Neon Tree and Squidsoup’s Murmuration.

A virtual art club for teens The winter season of the National Maritime Museum’s Art & Design Saturday Club kicked off last weekend, but there’s still a chance to enroll your teens (aged 13 - 16). The sessions are a chance for budding young artists to hone their skills using a range of different mediums, and take inspiration from artworks on show as well as those back-of-house at the museum and its sister site, the Queen’s House.

Club members will also get to take part in three national events, including the Summer Show, which will see their works exhibited at Somerset House in central London. The club is hosted by the National Maritime Museum, but sessions are taking place online.

Part of international organisation Toastmasters, which aims to ‘empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders’, Meridian Speakers is a public speaking club in Greenwich which, in normal times, meets up on a bi-weekly basis at the Trafalgar Rowing Club. The Covid-19 outbreak has seen the club move its work online, but new members can still join the group in the virtual sphere and learn how to speak confidently in public.

Holly O’Mahony speaks to Cerian Williams, Meridian Speakers’ vice president of public relations, to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: How did you get involved with Meridian Speakers?

Cerian Williams: I originally joined due to an increasing fear of speaking publicly that was even leading to having small panic attacks any time I had to speak at work. I avoided speaking at all costs throughout my career, but I felt over time it was getting worse. I joined because I felt like I had to try something.

like this would be one way of ensuring I definitely turned up each week!

HOM: How has joining changed your relationship with public speaking?

CW: Nearly two years on, I feel my speaking and confidence has improved immeasurably. I find when I now get asked to present at work, whilst I still feel the butterflies and anxiety I am able to draw upon my recent Toastmasters speeches and know I can get through it. I never thought it would be possible for me to be able to present confidently and yet feedback at work would suggest I can.

HOM: You meet up twice a month as a group. How do sessions typically play out?

CW: Sessions are two hours long. The first half of the session is focused on prepared speeches by members. As a member you sign up to ‘pathways’. There are a number of different pathways to choose from depending on what you are looking to achieve, including dynamic leadership, presentation mastery or even engaging humour. you are guided through online tutorials and resources, and you need to complete 10 speeches, each around 5-7 minutes The second part of the meeting is ’table-topics’. This is where someone asks a question and you have two minutes to respond. It’s great for practicing impromptu speaking, like being in a lift with the CEO and they suddenly turn and ask you a question!

The great thing about the meetings is everyone gets evaluated, even the evaluators, so there is always a culture of development. It is really an encouraging and supportive environment.

HOM: Since the pandemic began, you’ve moved your sessions online. And do you think it’s easier or more difficult to speak publicly when there’s a screen between you and your audience?

CW: The pandemic has created an interesting challenge. Whilst it is different presenting on screen than presenting in person, a lot of the fundamentals are still important, including how to structure a good speech, how to engage with your

audience and how to use vocal variety.

Presenting on screen has become the new normal for many people and there is a lot we can learn from this, from how to position ourselves within the screen to engaging an audience surrounded by more distractions in their natural environment.

HOM: How much uptake has there been?

CW: There has still been a good uptake and actually, it has been a welcome relief to many people who are shielding to have somewhere they can go, and still focus on learning and development.

HOM: Why is January a good time for professionals to work on their public speaking skills?

CW: I think it’s always a good time to practice public speaking; it really is such a core skill, and one that often comes with a lot of apprehension and can hold people back. January is often a time where reflection takes place, so why not pursue the initial motivation to start something that could have a real impact on you?

HOM: Lastly, do you have any

advice for someone keen to improve their public speaking skills but apprehensive about joining a support group like Meridian Speakers?

CW: I think the key thing is to come along and see. Guests are always welcome.

The group is very supportive, fun, diverse and encouraging. Everyone has different reasons for being there, we have members who hate speaking and for whom saying a few words feels terrifying, through to members who are professionals and have made a living out of speaking. The diversity of members is what makes it so special; you are certain to learn something and come away feeling inspired. The beauty of it is that the success comes from just trying. Everyone celebrates every person’s achievements and it is amazing to see just how much you can develop in a supportive environment.

‘Inspiring’ champions of After the very worst of years, the very best among us – from frontline health staff to key community volunteers and charity workers – have been recognised in The Queen’s 2021 New Year Honours. Here we spotlight some of the deserving stars that Prime Minister Boris Johnson applauds as “an inspiration to us all”.

LAST YEAR brought to the fore a new breed of community champions... including those working in the NHS to treat coronavirus patients, scientists developing effective vaccines and key workers keeping essential services operating.

These “ordinary people” who continue to go above and beyond have been recognised for sterling work delivered in extraordinary circumstances.

The 2021 New Years Honours has recognised champions of sport as well as stars of stage and screen but this year, more than ever, it is ordinary people who have been recognised alongside them.

Among the deserving recipients are leading lights who have battled to save lives and keep the NHS afloat and those who have kept the country smiling by spreading kindness.

The list includes medical experts as well as volunteers working with youngsters, the elderly and those with disabilities. Those working in libraries, education and community arts also received recognition.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “In a year when so many have made sacrifices to protect our NHS and save people’s lives, the outstanding efforts of those receiving honours are a welcome reminder of the strength of human spirit and of what can be achieved through courage and compassion.

“The 2021 New Year Honours offer us an opportunity to salute their dedication and recognise many who have gone above and beyond in their contribution to our country.

JACQUIE WINNING JACQUIE WINNING’S award “recognises the achievements of everyone” at Forth Valley Sensory Centre following “an exceptionally challenging year”.

The 55 year-old from Falkirk was recognised for going the extra mile to manage “wraparound” services to people with sensory loss during the pandemic.

“COVID-19 has been challenging for everyone, but more so for people with sensory loss. Those with hearing loss face challenges due to face masks and social distancing interfering with their ability to lip read.

“Those with sight loss face

Jacquie’s support included providing Braille copies of virus information, establishing telephone, text and email befriending lifelines to address isolation and producing podcasts providing vital updates.

“The impact is that some of the most vulnerable people in society have been incredibly well supported during the most challenging of times. Thanks go to the dedication, enthusiasm and willingness to adapt by our team, volunteers and partners, and tremendous support of our board of directors.”

CABINET OFFICE confirmation of Dr Tamas Szakmany’s award made him “astonished, touched and humbled”.

The 44 year-old from Newport explained: “I thought I was doing my job like everybody else. I didn’t think for one minute it would result in this. I’m really surprised.

Once I was allowed to talk about it, the first thing I said was how fortunate I was to work with this team.

“2020 was difficult professionally.

Personally, I had many successes. It was a double-edged sword. The MBE is recognition for the enormous effort everyone has made to get us through the first wave. I hope

we have similar success again.”

The Royal Gwent Hospital critical care consultant, recognised for exceptional service to the NHS, spearheaded Welsh Critical Care Network response during the pandemic, rapidly disseminating information on lessons learnt via traditional and social media platforms.

Filming his personal and professional life, he helped produce an emotional deeply personal documentary “Critical: Inside Intensive Care Coronavirus” episode, broadcasted by BBC Wales and included among American Society of Chest Physicians and Society of Critical Care Medicine teaching materials.

Golam Chowdhury was then “humbled” when his British Empire Medal was confirmed.

“I had no idea I had even been nominated,” said the 51-year-old from Portsmouth.

“It’s been challenging, both personally and professionally, but I am always amazed by human resilience and community spirit. Watching how people

Michael Briggs’ MBE was rewarded for services beyond the call of duty in the voluntary sector and community.

“Even though we’ve hardly moved out of the office, it’s all been pretty busy,” explained the East Belfast Community Development Agency Executive Director.

“We’ve been managing our COVID programme, buying bulk food to get out to groups we support. We developed a network of groups delivering small packages to people who are

vulnerable, shielding or in financial need.” The 57 year-old continued: “There are so many stories from older people who say ‘it’s just good to know people are thinking about us.”

Thinking the honour email was promotional, Michael initially “didn’t actually take it seriously”.

He revealed: “I nearly didn’t open it. Then I saw it was from the Cabinet Office. “For me, it’s about the efforts of other people as well.

“So many people have been very supportive over the years. I’m the one who ends up getting the award, but other people have been involved in the success of my work.”

“I don’t do my job – or my volunteering – for praise,” said the father-of-two. “I do it because, if the tables were turned and I was the one that needed help, then I would hope that there was someone out there to support me.

“I’d like to dedicate my award to everyone in all communities who are helping others.”

Black history under the spotlight at Greenwich Theatre Actor and singer Tayo Aluko is performing his two solo shows, Call Mr. Robeson and Just an Ordinary Lawyer, at Greenwich Theatre this spring.

The shows were originally due to run this week, but with the theatre remaining closed under tier 4 restrictions, audiences will have to wait until March to see them. Both shows see the Nigerian-born actor embody a Black historical figure whose exemplary story deserves to shine in the spotlight. In fact, it was this urge to become a mouthpiece for his theatrical subjects that led Tayo to abandon his architecture degree and pursue his earlier love of acting and singing instead, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Call Mr. Robeson tells the story of actor, singer and civil rights campaigner Paul Robeson, whose ‘radical’ (progressive) beliefs saw him branded a traitor and denied opportunities to perform.

Featuring some of his most famous songs, including ‘Ol’ Man River’, Call Mr. Robeson charts the eventful life of one of the 20th Century’s most impressive but overlooked figures, who was a forerunner of the civil rights movement.

It was on being told his singing voice sounded like Paul Robeson that Tayo first became aware of the activist. “I stumbled upon his biography shortly after that. I read it and realised that this single man’s story could inform us about world history and politics, and at the same

time give inspiration to those undergoing struggles for equality and freedom today,” he explains, when we speak. “I knew then that a musical play would be an excellent vehicle for this particular story, and it spoke to me particularly because I was already a singer. I didn’t think it would be me eventually writing and performing the play, but I am grateful that that was the way it turned out.”

Tayo has won several awards for the play since he first performed it at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe back in August 2007.

Since then, he’s gone on to perform it in five continents and at several impressive locations, including New York’s Carnegie Hall (2012) and London’s West End (2013). He has previously performed it at

Greenwich Theatre too, back in 2009.

“The play has been in demand continuously for thirteen years, and it took Covid to interrupt the constant touring,” he says. “It is also Covid and the need for social distancing, small casts and a decent-sized space that made it right for me to return to Greenwich Theatre, eleven years after my last appearance here,” he adds.

Tayo now has a second play touring, too.

First performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2016, Just an Ordinary Lawyer tells the story of Nigerian-born lawyer Tunji Sowande, who became Britain’s first Black judge in 1978, and who was also a keen cricket lover and concert singer.

Was it Sowande’s secondary interest in music that attracted Tayo to portraying him on stage?

“Yes, as a singer and actor, it makes sense to find singers to tell stories about, or in Sowande’s case, through,” he says. “I say that because his life story is nowhere near as interesting or dramatic as Paul Robeson’s, but his interest in music, and more importantly, sports, gave me the opportunity to examine and share stories of Black liberation struggles as played out, literally, on the sports field.”

Rehearsing and performing two plays simultaneously about two very different figures surely comes with its challenges, not least of all remembering which character’s shoes you’re in on stage.

Tayo, however, is completely unfazed. “It’s thrilling to be able to get those mental and physical muscles going again after so long,” he says. “Having performed both on the same day on two or three occasions in the past, I am not too worried about getting the characters or lines confused.”

In seeing the stories of the two figures played out on stage, Tayo hopes they inspire “joy” in the audience, “and inspiration to continue the struggle that giants endured before us”.

It was on seeing Joseph Stein’s musical Fiddler on the Roof as a 16-year-old that Tayo first became aware of the powers of theatre to educate an audience. “It tells the story of a Jewish community

being forced into exile from their village in [Imperial Russia],” he recalls. “I would come to understand decades later that it proves that performance is a direct and visceral way of getting important history across to an otherwise largely disinterested public, and correcting many wrong assumptions,” he explains.

“I’ve since come to believe that my storytelling on stage is my contribution to correcting the historical record, for example that the freedoms Black people have won around the globe were granted to us by benevolent white people, when they were in fact the result of tremendously intelligent and brave struggle and sacrifice.”

What would the two historical figures have made of one another were they to have met in real life? “Sowande would have been awed and star-struck by Robeson, I’m sure,” chuckles Tayo. “He was a quiet, humble man, and may not have left much of an impression on Robeson, other than sharing a love of music, and different approaches to political activism. On the other hand, Sowande would have dined out on his having met Robeson till the day he died, I’m sure.”

The boat builders of Point Wharf

Mary Mills Sometimes, talking to audiences about the Peninsula, or about Greenwich boat builders – I will ask if someone can tell me the most recent date when a boat of any size was built on the Peninsula riverside? Someone in the audience will say - 1920? ... or 1939? .. Or, nervously, 1952? Or maybe 1960? Well no! All wrong.

This piece is going to describe a few of the firms which were on Point Wharf – most of them boat builders.

Point Wharf is right up the top bit of the Peninsula - at Blackwall Point. It is now home to Alex Chinnock’s ‘Bullet from a Shooting Star’, you know, the upside down Pylon. I’ve always really liked that – it’s perhaps the thing I like best in all the newness of the Peninsula.

Point Wharf is also home to new ‘venue’ called Magazine. Personally I doubt Magazine knows that it is on Point Wharf.

That is a pity, because that knowledge could have informed Magazine in its construction and content - given it a bit of context and sense of place. But never mind. Let’s see what did go on there.

We’ve already looked at Shrubsalls barge builders who were there 1900 to 1943 and how in the Second World War they were forced onto the foreshore because Delta Metal wanted their buildings for war work.

Earlier, in 1876, the wharf had been leased to Edmunds by Morden College although I suspect he was there before that. I also suspect he was wealthy and successful in his barge building although I don’t

know what barges he built. In 1864 until his death in 1900 he lived in Carisbrooke Villa in Westcombe Hill, Blackheath. In 1867 he had been charged with ‘furiously riding a horse to the danger of the public in Blackheath Village - although what that says about him I am really not sure.

In 1890 the wharf was badly damaged by fire when the ‘front and side front of wharf were damaged .... About twelve barges nearly destroyed, and one laden with reeds seriously damaged by fire and water’. 13 barges in for repair or being built all at the same time, that sounds like a prosperous works.

After Edmunds death the wharf was taken over by Humphery’s and Grey. They were fundamentally a lighterage firm employing a fleet of tugs and lighters for work around the port. Lighterage developed in the very early 19th century because of the need to move goods from ships standing in the river and carry them to their proper wharves. This was before the enclosed docks were built. The construction of the docks was opposed by lightermen and their influence in the Watermen’s Company and the City of London won them major concession. This was the “free-water clause”, first introduced into the West

India Dock Act of 1799 and then into the Acts or all of the other docks. This said there was to be no charge for “lighters entering into the docks ... – thus lighters and barges had the same freedom in docks that they had on the open river.. It allowed ships to be loaded and unloaded over side, using lighters to transfer goods to riverside wharves rather than dock quays, so did no pay quay and dock warehouse fees. This reduced the docks’ income and boosting the profits of their competitors.

A dumb barge in an almost standard design evolved and varied very little over the years except in size. In the early years lighters were propelled about the river by lightermen using sweeps, long oars, and using their knowledge of the tides and currents to make progress. Later small tugs could be used to tow them and strings of barges were a common sight with several under tow. In the 1950’s there were 8,000 lighters in use on the Thames and over 250 lighterage tugs.

Humphry’s and Grey would have had a large fleet at East Greenwich – and they also built some vessels themselves. Two of these were: Sir John. A tug built in 1935 by Humphrey & Grey (Lighterage) Ltd at East Greenwich and fitted with a British Polar M34M diesel engine. She was eventually scrapped at Millwall in 1971.

After the Second World War the wharf was taken over by Thomas Hughan. I know very little, if anything, about them, but they were

on site for many years and built numerous vessels – some of which are very much still on the River today. Here are some – picked at random from various web sites

will have seen on the River. This is the replica Mississippi paddle steamer, Elizabethan, for Greenwich Pleasure Craft – described as ‘a conference vessel’.

Rhijaica. This was a twin engined motor boat built in 1965 and fitted out by Tough Brothers of Teddington. She was owned by the adventurer Roger Pilkington and called Thames Commodore. With him she cruised waterways and canals in the UK and Europe. By 2001 she was in the Isle of Wight and relaunched in 2011.

Hughan closed in the late 1970s and in the 1980s Joe Jacubaits, a Lithuanian who lived in Charlton moved his boat building and repair business to Point Wharf, having left his previous site in the Royals as the result of ‘regeneration’. In the late 1980s he employed 18 craftsmen and three apprentices with an order book full for the next two years. Following more ‘regeneration’ artefacts from his business remained rusting on the riverside until removed during ‘tidying operations’ before the Millennium Exhibition.

Chay Blyth. Built: 1972 and named after the Scottish yachtsman, the first person to sail single-handed, non-stop westwards around the world in 1971. She is described as “one of the more traditional passenger boats operating on the Thames” and is now owned by Westminster Party Boats Valulla was built in 1973 and isa Greenwich Excursion vessel operated by Reeds River Cruise The Mayflower Garden . This is owned by City Cruises. She was built in 1974 and refitted in 2007 The Pride of London was built in 1975 and is now owned by Cruise London Ltd. She was built for private charter and sightseeing tours and originally called ‘Pride of Greenwich’ . She is described as a ‘stunning London venue’ and an ‘exclusive party boat’ for 245 passengers.

In a step away from party boats in 1977 they built three self propelling cement vessels for Ghana But you see the way things have gone.

These are mainly boats designed for parties or short River cruises. Finally in 1981– they built the one boat everyone

I note however that a comment on Murky Depths says of Jacubaits “Some real shenanigans happened here!” I did try to interview Joe once to know more about his yard. I rang his number - he answered but said ‘can’t talk to you now. love, the bailiffs is ere’.

I feel however that boat building on the Greenwich riverside is only gone for a little while. I remember the cheers locally and the happy smiles when a coaster was built in Woolwich at Cubows in the 1990s, before that site was regenerated too. Sooner or later there will be a little patch of foreshore which the developers haven’t noticed ... and ... and in any case, is anything being built down at Bay Wharf?

So ,what was that latest boat of any size built on the Peninsula? She was built by Jacubaits for Hobbs & Sons of Reading..

She is another Mississippi-styled party boat – The New Orleans .

New CACT Trustee looks forward to 2021 Four new trustees were also appointed in the summer of 2020 (pictured)

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has welcomed Tracy Herd to the Board of Trustees, following her formal appointment at the Charity’s December Board meeting.

12 January 13 2021

Tracy became the fifth new trustee of 2020, with CACT’s Board now comprising 10 trustees with a wide range of skills and expertise.

She attended her first full Board meeting in December and will be a member of the Marketing & Fundraising Committee, which will meet with her for the first time in February.

Jason Morgan MBE, Chief Executive said: “We are delighted to welcome Tracy to the Board.

Tracy is familiar with CACT’s wide range of work and community programmes through her role as Healthier Communities Programme Manager with the Royal Borough of Greenwich some years ago.”

This role involved delivering an extensive men’s health programme and improving the health and wellbeing of the most deprived communities in Greenwich.

“I very much look forward to working with Tracy again”, Jason added.

Tracy currently leads on Movember’s programmes aimed at young men in the UK. She manages Ahead of the Game, a programme developed to improve youth mental health through community sport by

engaging young athletes, parents and coaches.

Tracy started her career at the House of Commons Library before moving into public health policy and health improvement with a particular focus on men’s health and health inequalities.

As Deputy Chief Executive of the Men’s Health Forum, Tracy was responsible for developing new programmes and service models that work better for men. She led the forum’s work on men and obesity to testing the evidence on developing weight management programmes for men.

Tracy has lived in Charlton for 22 years and has enjoyed many Saturday afternoons at The Valley with her two sons.

Tracy said she is “delighted to come onboard and looking forward to working with a great team”.

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) [Millennium Way] PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER)

1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Road Traffic Solutions who need to carry out cabin delivery.

2. The Order will come into operation on 15th January 2021 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 2 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Swingate Lane between Highmead and Welton Road.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
