Enchanting Christmas trail lights up Avery Hill Park The Royal Borough of Greenwich transformed Avery Hill Park into a magical wonderland for Sparkle in the Park this December. Giant baubles, glittering reindeer and spectacular snowflakes brought Christmas cheer to thousands of residents who visited the enchanting light display.

The Sparkle in the Park Nutcracker Trail, sponsored by U+I, offered children the chance to look out for hidden letters as they journeyed through the fairy lit trees to spell a festive word and win a prize.

Festive Christmas markets, sponsored by London South East Colleges, also popped up in Eltham, Greenwich, Thamesmead and Woolwich where visitors discovered handmade gifts and tasty treats while supporting local traders.

Last chance to see Santa in his (Socially Distanced) Grotto Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice is hosting its annual grotto both in-person at Greenwich Market (restrictions permitting) and online.

Those visiting the market must pre-book to allow the team to wipe down surfaces between visits, and everyone over the age of 11 must wear a face covering. Video sessions, meanwhile, will last for approximately five minutes, with an age-appropriate gift posted out to children following the call.

Now in its 14th year, Greenwich’s Advent Windows are an established highlight of the festive season. The tradition sees 24 windows across Greenwich town centre present a unique display centred around one main theme, which this year is ‘Near and Far’. Over the course of the event, which is organised by St. Alfege Church, one new window is revealed each day between December 1 – 24. But the real joy comes now, once all 24 windows have been opened. Those keen to admire their festive contents have until January 3 to see them – which can be done in three hours on foot.

Art projects in the wild Pore over the work of final year students from Ravensbourne University at the Ravensbourne University Outdoor Degree Show. Hundreds and Thousands: the Instagrammable 2021 exhibition Public walkway the Tide on Greenwich Peninsula is undergoing a colourful makeover next month, courtesy of artist Liz West. The large-scale installation, Hundreds and Thousands, is being pitched as ‘one for the ‘gram’ (Instagram), and will see 600 metres of the walkway’s glass balustrades wrapped in multicoloured ribbons in a bid to contemplate ‘the subtle nuances of light’ along this stretch of the river ‘as we transition from winter to spring’. Holly O’Mahony: How did the Hundreds and Thousands commission come about? Were you always planning on an outdoor installation using the Tide walkway, or has it been informed by the pandemic and the possibility we might not be allowed inside galleries at various points this winter?

KC: The Tide is a new home for contemporary site-specific art, and features works by established as well as emerging contemporary artists. Works

by Alan Jones, Damien Hirst and Morag Myerscough all respond thematically to the Tide’s unique environment. Liz’s work is an extension of this dialogue.

Kaia Charles: In the aftermath of the pandemic we imagine that outdoor cultural experiences will take on even greater importance. However, our aspiration for the Tide has always been to commission site-specific art and use its unique architecture, playing with the nature of the site and its unique position. Hundreds and Thousands is the first in a series of commissions where the Tide walkways themselves become the artist’s canvas for exploration.

HOM: Will the public be able to interact with – even touch – the installation, or is it one to admire from afar?

HOM: Artist Liz West’s work looks very in keeping with recent colourful NOW Gallery exhibitions, including Emmanuelle Moureaux’s Slices of Time which was on show there earlier this year.

How did you come to work with Liz? KC: We were in awe of her unique practise which explores an interplay of space, colour and light. I found her experiments with natural as opposed to artificial light compelling. We think it reveals the subtle shifts in light quality of the Tide in its riverside location.

HOM: The Tide is already home to works by several big name artists. How will Liz’s work complement the existing installations along this stretch?

KC: The public will be able to transition through this ribbon of undulating colour as they explore the Tide. We are focussed on removing art from its bubble and creating multi-layered experiences. Audiences will take in architecturally rich spaces, nature and views of the water with Liz’s Hundreds and Thousands amplifying those experiences through playful changes in light and pattern as they walk the route.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope the public takes away from seeing the installation?

KC: The artwork is one of the largest art interventions, spanning 600 metres. We want the public to feel free to roam and appreciate the power of natural light.

The work is playful and imaginative, and inevitably audiences will frame their own journeys and narratives.

Few gastronomic delights complement the Christmas market experience like a cup of something mulled and a hot, breadbased bite to eat. In other parts of northern Europe, this might take the form of a bratwurst, while in America, it’s typically a burger or regular hot dog. Biggest UK vaccine roll-out brings hope of a brighter and better future for all of us The UK’s biggest roll-out of a vaccine in a generation is well underway, bringing hope to all for protection against COVID-19 as well as the prospect of a brighter, better 2021.

FROM DELIVERY drivers to doctors, warehouse workers to care staff, there is now a dedicated army of heroes involved in the UK Government’s nationwide roll-out of virus vaccinations.

Inoculations have already begun with elderly patients as well as hospital and care staff among the first to receive first phase jabs across the nation.

Experts from the independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency have already approved Pfizer/ BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for use.

Its introduction follows months of clinical trials and analysis of the data by the MHRA, which confirms the safe, free treatment meets stringent safety standards.

NHS England and NHS Improvement, NHS Wales, NHS Scotland, Health and Social Care Northern Ireland, all of which

have decades of experience delivering large-scale vaccination programmes.

One such stall providing precisely this is Turnips, the original ‘branch’ of which can be found in Borough Market, but a little sister site stands closer to home in Greenwich Market. Founded by Fred and Caroline Foster in 1989, Turnips began as a wholesale fruit and vegetable business solely supplying restaurants.

In fact, it was one of three businesses to establish the retail set up of the Borough Market we know and love today.

Turnips has been a staple of Greenwich Market for the past five years. Run by Fred and Caroline’s daughter Frederica, who joined the family business after finishing university, the offering here (and at Frederica’s other stalls at King’s Cross and Islington) focuses on ready-to-consume goods. Specifically, juices, hot chocolates and toasties. At this time of year, it looks gorgeously festive, with a table set up in front of the bricks-and-mortar store (a Covid-secure arrangement) decked out in thick branches of winter foliage.

“The fruit juices are all based upon mum and dad originating as greengrocers,” explains Frederica, after I stop by the stall in the run up to Christmas. “We have been able to experience seasonality first hand and have access, through their connections, to the most amazing fresh fruits that others simply don’t have.”

Why cheese toasties? “The farm feel, especially the cheese and milk, are very much a product of being in and around markets,” she explains. “I, personally, have spent most of my life around fresh produce and understand how important it is when we are deciding what to eat and drink.”

of grainy bread sandwich gooey, oozing cheese dotted with flecks of leek and red onion. It’s hearty, rustic and salty (perhaps a little too much so), and I almost wish I was hungover to fully appreciate it. Turnips is perhaps missing a trick by offering just the one filling but still, this toasty certainly embodies the farm-to-fork ethos the brand is striving to achieve.

So, too, do the steaming cauldrons of winter warmer punches – both virgin – which jostle for attention against the regular fresh juices of orange, mint lemonade and regular lemonade. Visitors have the choice of mulled rhubarb and quince with apple, or mulled fig and blueberry with spiced cranberry. Both are £3.95 and taste like the sweetest natural pleasures of winter, liquified and bottled.

Those with a real sweet tooth might look instead to Turnips’ other speciality: gourmet drinking chocolate. “I absolutely love it! I learnt from a young age to specialise in what you enjoy the most; far more likely to succeed if you are passionate,” beams Frederica, about the offering. For those unfamiliar, drinking chocolate consisting of ready-to-eat chocolate pieces (in this case buttons), instead of powder, melted with milk to form a thicker, richer, more indulgent hot drink.

Milk, white and strawberry (Frederica’s favourite) hot chocolate are available.

Going on Frederica’s recommendation, I tried the strawberry variety, which tasted nostalgically like a hot, melted Mini Milk ice cream, and made the five-year-old inside of me squeal with delight. Rest assured, whether you’re popping into the market to run errands, completing your Christmas shopping or simply taking a break from a day spent

working at your desk, this drinkable sugar rush will provide you with the energy to complete the day’s tasks.

I just have one niggle and that’s being charged an extra £1 (rather than the more reasonable going rate of around £0.30) to have it with oat milk which, given this dairy substitute is readily available and inexpensive in most supermarkets, is a little steep.

Still, it’s important to support independent traders like Turnips, especially after the threats the pandemic has posed on their business.

“The first lockdown was particularly tough as we were just completely shut and not much to be done about it,” admits Frederica, adding that as an employer,

her main goal throughout the pandemic has been to keep her employees’ jobs safe. ““Everyday brings with it a different obstacle but I believe we will be better and a stronger company for it. As the pandemic has continued, we have learnt to adapt by making all the offerings take away. So far it has been a challenge, but we are still going, with a smile,” she says.

“I think the whole team has really missed seeing and talking to customers everyday.

In my opinion, we all appreciate the work we do so much more after being stuck in doors for three months!”

Every cloud has a silver lining and for Frederica, a positive to the restrictions imposed as a result of the pandemic – which have caused many of us to spend more time in our neighbourhoods

Stay Warm Stay Safe provides extra support and services for Greenwich residents to manage in cold conditions. With the COVID-19 restrictions in place this winter, we are all likely to be spending less time in the office and more time at home in accordance with government guidelines, so our heating bills will in many cases increase.

The London Fire Brigade have issued a warning about the use of portable heaters as a way of heating our homes cheaply, having noticed an increase in the number of house fires.

Cold weather can weaken the immune system and increase blood

pressure, raising the risks of heart attacks and strokes. It can also make long-term health conditions such as diabetes worse. It is therefore more important than ever to stay warm and well this winter.

This annual campaign supports those most vulnerable to the cold such as those aged over 60 or who have a learning disability, a long-term condition, low income or problems paying winter fuel bills.

The barges that made it to Dunkirk

Mary Mills If we carry on up the riverside path past where the golf course is now, there are the sites of a number of boat and barge builders. I’m very nervous of writing about barge builders because I know that the enthusiasts and owners are always ready to jump on an amateur like me. Past experience shows me that if they see one of my articles they will immediately rewrite it. But – I can’t ignore an important industry on the Peninsula riverside – so here goes, and fingers crossed.

The enthusiasts’ concern that we get it right about the Thames spritsail barge says something about their almost mythic status... practical, economic, cheap, versatile, they also manage to be hugely romantic. And also – remember – they are modern

– highly designed in the late 19th century. Whoever was it that thought that petrol engines and lorries were a better option for heavy haulage?

Some of my earliest memories are sitting on Gravesend Prom and seeing the barges lined up in the river, waiting to be called for cargoes. But Gravesend was not a barge building port – while Greenwich, considerably upriver, was.

Horace Shrubsall had several barge yards, starting with one at Ipswich in 1894. He probably originally came from Sittingbourne where his father had a yard and it is said ‘the family had a profound influence over the design of the Thames sailing barge’.

He built 16 barges in Ipswich, but he gradually began to build up a practice as a surveyor and needed to be nearer to London. So, he opened a yard in Narrow Street in Limehouse where he built three more, and in 1901 he moved this yard to Tunnel Wharf in Greenwich.

He leased a site from Morden College with a big foreshore area with a lot of space with a barge shed along with barge blocks and a saw pit. The saw pit was worked by two men, one above and one below, and is thought

to be the last saw pit of this type on the river. In the Great War his site was taken over by Delta Metal and from then on barge building and repairs took place on the foreshore. Horace’s son Percy eventually took the yard over.

Starting in 1901 Shrubsall built a barge called ‘King’, and then a 50 ton barge called Southwark. In 1902 there were two racing barges - Imperial and Princess, both of them went on to win prizes. At the same time they had to work for their living Imperial loaded cement and flour.

They were followed by race winner Genesta and then Vera, and Sirdar.

One of the most famous of the Shrubsall barges was Veronica – and I see on the net that you can now buy model kits to make your own miniVeronica. She was ‘considered by many to be the fastest all round barge that was built’. She won 25 barge races most of them when she was owned by Greenhithe based Everard. Although she won races and was built with an eye on the prize money, her hull shape was designed low sided and with a wide beam for the specific purpose of carrying manure down to the Essex farms and returning with hay stacks for London's horses. She eventually became a house barge called Veronica

Belle and then went to the Dolphin Yard barge museum in Sittingbourne, where parts of her were preserved – do they still have them and where are they now? She was eventually hulked at Bedlam's Bottom, at Funton (between Sittingbourne and Rainham) and bits of her could still be seen sticking out of the mud a few years ago.

Many barges were lost in the Second World War. Of Shrubsall's Alderman, built 1905, was lost on war service, Bankside, rebuilt in 1926 was mined and Duchess built 1904, was lost at Dunkirk and abandoned.

Valonia too was lost at Dunkirk. She had been used to trade to Portland, calling at Poole, Dartmouth and Yarmouth, the Isle of Wight, and was her owner's best earner. She had had an engine installed before the war and in 1938 her running costs were £74.2s.6d, of which £51.14s.6d was petrol for the engine, with oil and engine repairs taking up most of the rest. Which demonstrates the cheapness of sail. In 1940, she was at Dunkirk discharging pitch from Aylesford and while she was leaving she hit a tanker, Limousin, and sank, as a total loss.

The distances and work carried out can be illustrated by Veravia, herself a rebuild of 1924 of a barge called Alarm. Pre-1930 she took coal from Goole to Mill Rythe, alternating with cullet to Antwerp and then back with facing bricks from Boom. She went to the Elbe and Brest and her last Channel passage was in 1959 when loaded with 140 tons of spent oxide from Portsmouth Gas Works destined for the glassworks at Rouen. Before that she traded to the continent with Belgian roofing tiles, up the Rhine with Appolinaris, packed in straw – where she was towed up river by a paddle tug. She carried the larger blocks of Portland stone for the Cenotaph.

Still going in 1960 she took meal for Ipswich from Tilbury and scrap iron from Deptford to Goole, coal from Kirby to Wapping, meal from Hull to Faversham, Canadian Wheat from Hull to Peterborough. She went to St.Peter’s Port, Guernsey with flour and back with granite road chippings to London. In 1961 she had a diesel engine fitted.

Some relics of the barges remained around for som time. Shrubsall built Genesta but she was eventually hulked at Greenwich and her huge main mast was kept at Pipers Yard – where Riverside Gardens’ is now. www.weekender.co.uk

The mast was used to keep the river wall together and I guess it went into the skip went the Environment Agency cleaned up the site in 2015. She had been wrecked near Hoo Fort full of beer barrels from the Meux Brewery at Pimlico.

Verona is the one Shrubsall barge which may still be afloat – In Stockholm. she was built in 1905 and was converted to a barge yacht

by Norton. She had previously been owned by Everard’s and kept for racing. However she was flat in profile, broad in the backside and also a good carrier. During 1950 she completed 23 freights: two of them cement from Swanscombe ; to Maidstone with 138 tons of coal and returning from Aylesford to Dagenham with sand; to Faversham with 131 tons of bone meal; a 140-ton return freight of cement from Cliffe to the King George V Dock; to Chatham with 100 tons of

wheat; Whitstable with 100 tons of cattle cake; to Faversham with 121 tons of coal at six shillings per ton. Other freights were completed to Ipswich with barley and wheat, Leigh, Southend and Creeksea with timber, and Colchester with wheat.

Eventually Verona lay for some time at Pear Tree Wharf, Charlton – where the Yacht Club is now - before being sailed across to Stockholm as a yacht. Is she still there?

In 1942 Shrubsall’s accounts contain a note 'wharf damaged by enemy action’. The following year, when the lease expired, the Tunnel Wharf yard was closed. With it went another era of heavy haulage on the Thames. Like I said – who was it thought lorries were better?
