Virginia Woolf’s life told through song Last chance: An urgent, timely exhibition at the National Maritime Museum Collated and curated by southeast London collective BLKBRD, Ghost Meridian is an exhibition of artworks relating to migration, colonialism and slavery, as well as the societal problems which are born out of them: underrepresentation and injustice.

The exhibition was prompted by 2020’s Covid-19 crisis and the ongoing #BlackLivesMatter movement. Banners produced

by BLKBRD Collective in collaboration with Action for Refugees in Lewisham, Greenwich Inclusion Project and Barnet Refugee Service are on display outside the National Maritime Museum, while the majority of the exhibition can be found inside. The highlight piece is perhaps a large-scale sail – a response to the theme of ‘togetherness’ – which is intended to be rigged on Cutty Sark.

Remembrance Sunday with RMG Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) is hosting a series of events to commemorate Remembrance Day on November 8. This year’s programme is being held in partnership with Black Poppy Rose, an organisation committed to highlighting the vital contributions and sacrifices made by black and African citizens serving in the World Wars. The programme includes a spoken word performance by Douggie John; a chance to browse a display of war relics from both the National Maritime Museum and Black Poppy Rose collections; and a workshop on the black and African soldiers who served in the armed forces on behalf of Great Britain.

We know about Woolf’s troubled childhood, her views on literature, the challenges facing women in the arts and the Bloomsbury set because it was well-documented in her writing. Using the great author’s own accounts, classical singer and actor Lucy Stevens is weaving Woolf’s story with music and songs written by female composers who were also her contemporaries.

Planar 1/1: More music-fuelled art at NOW Gallery

Fresh off the back of its anonymous charity record sleeve exhibition and sale, Secret 7”, NOW Gallery is hosting a follow-up: Planar 1/1. The show has been in the pipeline since 2018, when the Secret 7” team sent a Rega Planar 1 turntable to 15 worldfamous artists including Es Devlin and Gavin Turk with an open brief to create an artwork. The resulting pimped-up turntables are going on show at NOW Gallery before being sold at auction, with all proceeds going towards this year’s chosen charity: Help Refugees, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Joining Es Devlin and Gavin Turk in creating turntables is a starry roster of artists from a range of disciplines.

Previous Secret 7" headliners Sir Paul Smith, Pure Evil and Morag Myerscough are among those taking part, along with long-serving Secret 7" contributors including Chrissie Macdonald, Rana Begum and Tony Hung, each of whom has created record sleeves in the past. In addition are a number of artists making their debut with the event: Gregor Hildebrandt, Shona Heath, Haroon Mirza and Isabel + Helen among them.

Neolithic arrowheads, a heritage plaque and a playful animation feature among the artists’ responses to the brief. “The open brief has been taken in a number of different ways, which

I'm really pleased about,” beams Kevin King, co-founder of Secret 7”.

“There's stunning painted turntables like the ones by Rana and Morag; Pure Evil has created a zoetrope, Phillips-Walmsley have worked with gold-leaf; Chrissie has created a stained glass lid; Haroon has responded with his take on a dream machine which is lite up,” he reveals.

“A number of artists asked if they still had to function as a turntable and I encouraged that thought.”

Traditionally, Secret 7" record sleeves were sold as part of a fixed price sale. It was due to this year’s Covidrelated complications that the sale became an auction for the first time – a method which will also be used to sell the Planar 1/1 turntables.

“Planar 1/1 started as our way to raise a little extra for our cause using the great connections we've made through Secret 7”,” says Kevin. “We're working with The Auction Collective this year, and will be live streaming the auction from NOW Gallery on November 12,” he continues, adding that while 2020 is impossible to predict, if previous sales are anything to go by, the turntables are likely to go for anywhere between £800 and £2,500.

Unlike the Secret 7” record sale, which accepts artwork submissions from the public, Planar 1/1 has been a strictly professional affair. “I'd love to open it up to the public and see how they'd interpret the brief, but it's a little more complicated and expensive producing turntables than record sleeves,” explains Kevin. www.weekender.co.uk

Run 4 Rene: the organisation getting people moving for their mental health

“We started the R4R Greenwich crew a year ago. Having seen the impact Stef and others have made in their community, I was passionate about starting a group in Greenwich,” explains Cerian. “The year before I had taken some time out of work, and spent a lot of time walking in the park, and it is a special place for me to go to when I need some thinking time,” she recalls. “I moved to the area four years ago, and whilst I loved it and all it has to offer – the park, great food (I’m a big fan of the market), live music and theatre – I felt that I didn’t have a strong community around me to make the most of it.”

The group meets up once a week on a Saturday morning (at 10am outside the Pavillion Café at the top of Greenwich Park, if you’re keen to join them). Sessions are free and there’s no obligation or advanced sign up process – making it accessible for those struggling with their mental health to a degree where advanced commitment is just not an option.

When her brother died by suicide aged just 22, Stefanie Stavri threw her energies into founding a charitable trust in his memory: Run4Rene. Recognising the importance of community and physical exercise when going through a difficult time, Stef’s mission was to create a free, open-to-all network through which people could support one another, talk about their mental health and, simply, jog together. Since the original Run4Rene crew met in Victoria Park in 2017, the organisation has grown into 10 running communities spread across London.

“We jog at a talking pace for 4-5k, with a quick stop half way through so we can take in the beautiful view across London and take our weekly crew picture,” says Cerian. “Everyone runs in pairs or small groups and chats about anything from weekend plans to how they’re feeling. And it’s totally okay to stop for walking breaks.” At the end of the run, many members of the group stick around for coffee and breakfast at the café, and a chance to chat some more.

Thanks to the social nature of the club, firm friendships have been formed between some members.

“What makes it really special is how the support extends beyond the run on Saturday. It’s the check-in during the week, when someone remembers a significant day or event, and having a crew to celebrate wins with,” affirms Cerian. “The group is very social outside the weekly runs; we recently went to the Jazz festival at the Old Joinery, we’ve made the most of the Eat Out To Help Out scheme at Franco Manca, we’ve joined a local 5am outdoor yoga class to mark the summer solstice and some members trained together for their first ever 16km that we arranged to mark World Mental Health day,” she grins. “The crew is also a great source of inspiration for podcasts, books, Netflix shows and recipe recommendations.”

There’s no pressure to be a confident runner to join the group. The Greenwich crew, like all Run4Rene communities, is a complete mix in terms of ages and running ability.

“We typically have around 10 runners each week, with members of all ages, including our youngest member who is five and runs with her mum,” says Cerian. “We often find it can take people a bit of time to build up the courage to come for their first run as it can feel a bit daunting, but once they’ve come, they always return,” she adds. This, believes Cerian, is because there’s something very therapeutic about talking about your mental health openly to someone outside your usual network.

“There are many people dealing with poor mental health and who feel lonely and disconnected from their communities,” she continues. The

long waiting lists for support services and the stigma still surrounding poor mental health doesn’t help matters.

“We believe that having a community of people close by that someone can turn to for support is one way to help improve someone’s mental health and contribute to the prevention of suicide, the biggest killer of young people and men under 50.”

What’s more, multiple studies have found physical activity to be an effective way of preventing and reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. “Often when we are not feeling great we never immediately think about going for a run, but knowing the group is there is an incentive to get up and go, and we never end up regretting it afterwards. Whoever and whatever you run for, we’ll run with you.”

For Cerian, becoming a group leader has been “life changing”. She says: “I have met incredible people who before I would have just passed in the street. I feel much more connected to my community and know that I have a group of people I can turn to if I need to. Every week, no matter what has happened that week, I leave the crew feeling happier, heard, inspired and in a much healthier place for the weekend ahead. That is completely down to each and every member who has created such a warm and caring team.”

Help is on hand for the Churchill Theatre

The Churchill Theatre in Bromley has received £435,586 in grant funding from the government’s £1.57bn Cultural Recovery Fund. Announced in July, the fund has been set up to provide emergency support to the arts venues, companies and professionals who have been left unable to operate professionally as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, writes Holly O’Mahony…

has come as a huge relief to the theatre’s director Chris Glover.

“It is financially difficult for us to reopen the auditorium with social distancing in place, due to the scale of the performances that we present,” he says. “Our income stopped when we closed in March; the grant has therefore stabilised our financial position, enabling us to maintain the building and support the theatre’s dedicated and skilled team.”

Established in 1977, the Churchill Theatre stages major touring productions of musicals, plays, comedies, tribute acts and an annual pantomime. The venue welcomes around 200,000 customers through its doors every year and seats just shy of 800 in its auditorium.

Currently, the plan is for the theatre to reopen to the public in February 2021. “We have shows on sale from February, but continue to monitor the situation,” confirms Chris. “We are reviewing all of our procedures and policies ahead of re-opening to ensure that our customers continue to enjoy a safe experience,” he says, adding that if there’s opportunity to reopen parts of the building sooner, there may even be socially distanced performances to look forward to this year.

Despite theatres now being allowed to reopen at a reduced capacity to stage socially distanced productions, due to the large-scale nature of its shows, the Churchill Theatre has not been able to reopen yet. As such, the financial support package from the government

So, what’s in store for 2021? “We have been able to move a lot of our programme from this year into 2021, including the popular musicals We Will Rock You, Grease, Six and The Commitments,” reveals Chris. “Plus, we’ll have news shows including sets from comedians

In the meantime, there’s a virtual Christmas production to look forward to. “The ever popular That’ll be the Day are hosting an online performance of their Christmas special on December 9, followed by a live interactive Q&A with some of the cast.”

Chris acknowledges that while it’s been a hugely challenging and testing time for the entire theatre industry, it’s been heartening to receive so much support from the local community.

“The messages I have received from staff, volunteers, customers and town centre colleagues have been overwhelmingly supportive, and reconfirmed what a valued and muchloved venue the Churchill Theatre is,” he says. “It’s also been heartening to see venues that can operate with social distancing reopen recently, and audiences have responded with strong sales. The staff and I cannot wait to welcome back our customers when we reopen the doors.”

Kids’ book Beegu brought to life at the Albany

Children’s theatre company MishMash Productions is bringing the magical world of Alexis Deacon’s book Beegu to life in their latest show Strange Creatures. Through a fusion of theatre and chamber music, the company retell the tale of friendship, communication and belonging in a surprising and colourful world. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Liz Muge, MishMash Productions’ creative producer, to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Strange Creatures is inspired by the children's book Beegu. How did the idea for the show come about and what made you decide to tell it through music?

Liz Muge: Our objective is always to use music to tell a story and share something with our young audiences. We try to limit the amount of spoken word and really use a variety of music to tell the emotional journey. Whilst we had ideas of repertoire in mind, the book did come first in this case as we were looking for stories with a clear emotional journey that we

could re-tell using limited narrative but beautiful visuals that we could share through some amazing music.

HOM: With its message of celebrating differences and friendships, why is a story like Beegu so important for a young audience?

LM: We’ve chosen to particularly focus on the ideas of friendship and play in Strange Creatures so our audiences should be able to relate really well to the games we play and the emotional ups and downs of friendship. We have an amazing www.weekender.co.uk

musical argument composed for us by the wonderful Bill Carslake and some crazy, joyful singing as well as a variety of beautiful string playing.

As we’re introducing audiences to a new sound world, we like to keep to themes that they can easily relate to.

HOM: In the event of another lockdown, do you have the capacity to shift the show online?

LM: We’re very hopeful that our shows can go ahead as we’ve done our best to Covid-proof it. Unfortunately, it’s difficult for us to simply move the performance online as we don’t

have the necessary recording and filming equipment. However, when we’re up in Sunderland with the show we are intending to live stream it to get it out to more schools and will be working with the amazing Sunderland Music Hub on that one! We also have a series of video podcasts online though that anyone can watch on our YouTube channel.

HOM: How are you feeling about performing it in front of a live audience in a year that's seen theatres closed for so many months?

LM: We are so ridiculously excited to be back with live audiences. On this tour we’re bringing the show to venues and schools, and I think more than anything else we just want our audiences to enjoy a break from the stress and share some joyful musical moments with us.

“He came home buzzing and said how much he enjoyed it” Eight-year-old Roman Boast has been given an opportunity with Charlton Athletic’s famed Academy after impressing Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) coaches on its Advanced Centre football programme.

CACT’s Advanced Centre is a specialised Charlton Athletic Academy-designed curriculum focusing on technical abilities in players aged U5-U13.

Prior to attending CACT’s Advanced Centre, Roman was anxious about playing in a new environment.

“To start with he was a bit nervous about going and meeting new kids and coaches,” Roman’s father Anthony explained.

However, Roman quickly settled in and began to impress CACT coaches during the 6-week programme.

“After his first session in the Advanced Centre he came home buzzing and said how much he enjoyed it.”

Bradley Marshall, CACT’s Senior Football & Sports Development Officer, believed Roman showed the talent to make it into Charlton’s elite academy.

Bradley said: “Roman instantly made a great impression on us when he came in to the Advanced Centre and developed very quickly.”

As Advanced Centre sessions came to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Roman continued practicing at home, and received positive news as restrictions began to ease.

and was told he would be trialled in the elite academy. He was naturally excited and proud of himself because all the hard work he had put in had meant it was recognised by the coaches.

“He has gone on leaps and bounds since joining up with the elite academy, enjoying every training session and playing matches.

He loves being a part of Charlton Athletic Football Club.”

Anthony McCluskey, Roman’s coach in the elite academy, said: “Roman impressed us coaches when he came in for his first session. His attitude, confidence, technical abilities and his understanding of the game.

“We were excited to get him in and relieved he finally got his chance. He’s got better and better as the weeks have gone on and it shows with excellent individual performances vs Portsmouth and West Brom. Because of this, it’s why we offered him an Academy contract as we see a very bright future for Roman here with us at Charlton Athletic.”

Players can be selected for the Advanced Centre after attending one of CACT’s Football & Sports Development programmes.

Those who impress CACT coaches are given the chance to trial with Charlton’s academy, such as Roman.

The elusive Appleby’s

Appleby Works

Mary Mills The last article I did – working down the west bank of the Peninsula – was about the Bessemer works on what is now the Hanson’s site – Victoria Wharf. A lot of things about it are very unclear. However we know that Appleby Brothers – engineers and engine builders - were on the site from 1878. Appleby’s??

Who in Greenwich has ever heard of Appleby’s? Steam engine enthusiasts and some others will know about the Penn works in Blackheath Hill, and perhaps some other works in the Deptford area – but Appleby’s? It turns out they were quite a big company and that they had several works in different parts of the country.

I know about all sorts of things which they made – but what was actually made in Greenwich has been very, very elusive A picture of the works shows a big important looking riverside building – there’s an impressive frontage, with a house at one end. Six rows of workshops and six big chimneys all smoking away. There is some sort of overhead conveyor system, storage areas, big cranes and a barge being unloaded. So they must have done something there! I wonder if Appleby’s built that factory for themselves – or is it what the Bessemer family built before them on the site?

Appleby’s began at the Renishaw Ironworks near Sheffield in 1782.

Charles Appleby had worked as an

engineer in Russia and when he returned set up a works with his brother Thomas – hence Appleby Brothers – at Emerson Street in Southwark. One account says they opened the Greenwich works in 1866 – and another says that in 1886 they broke the link with Renishaw and opened the Greenwich works – twenty years later! However Morden College confirmed a lease to them in 1879 and implies they had been there since 1874. More to the point Kentish Mercury reported in August 1878 that "The Bessemer Steel and Ordnance Works... have been purchased by Messrs.

Appleby Brothers. Great activity”.

The Mercury described how the works was converted for general engineering by a hundred men. They pulled down the converter chimney, and the ‘massive foundation that carried the rolling mill’. The sheds were enclosed in an area ‘upwards of an acre’ and a range of workshops built for the foundry, boiler shop, turnery and erecting shop.

So – what did they make there? Again we are confused. Appleby advertised that at Greenwich they made Mining and Pumping Machinery, Engines, Boilers and Dredging plant, Cranes and Travellers, Bridges, Roofs and Railway Plant. Trouble is it has proved very difficult to pin much of this down.

A couple of years ago we were passed an email from a museum in Australia.

This was the Goulburn Historic Waterworks Museum and they wanted information about the manufacturers of their principle exhibit – an Appleby beam engine, the only remaining complete and working engine of four delivered to Australia in 1883. That date means that this impressive engine could have been made in Greenwich and the original Australian researcher thought it was. However looking at the museum’s web site it seems they are saying very little about the origins of their engine at all. John Steeds (and thank you to him) who

has been researching Appleby’s for years thinks it was contracted out to a firm in Derby. However it does give a good idea of the sort of installations Appleby were capable of. http:// www.goulburnwaterworks.com.au/ Something we do have a contemporary reference for is the Greenwich Steam Ferry. I wrote about this in a previous article for Weekender back in February. This ran from Wood Wharf (where the Sail Loft is now) and was a generally amazing installation. An 1888 article in the journal ‘Engineering’ definitely says that the engines for the ferry boats were made

by Appleby at their Greenwich works – so that is something.

There are some other Appleby engines around if you know where to look.

There is one at an obscure museum in an obscure village in Norfolk – Forncett St.Mary. There is a nice picture of it on their web site https:// www.forncettsteammuseum.con.uk/ .

The museum thinks it was made at the Jessup Works in Leicester, although the date of 1897 means it could have been made in Greenwich. This engine was originally sold to Crosse and Blackwell and then moved to the Sarsons vinegar works in Southwark.

There is another engine which is now at Crossness Engines in Abbey Wood.

from the Crosse and Blackwell factory at North Woolwich, from where it went to Sarsons and from there to Nestle’s HQ in Switzerland, and then back to – er - Peckham Bus Garage.

Crossness have it now and tell me that it was made in Greenwich. You can go and see it there on their next open day. http://www.crossness.org.uk/ Crossness also have a record of a contract for well pumps, donkey pumps and sluice valves from Appleby in 1879.

I do have one very solid article about Appleby’s in Greenwich. This is a report of a presentation dinner at the Crown and Sceptre - I don’t know the date but I guess it’s early 1880s.

This was to give a ‘very beautiful timepiece’ to two employees who were leaving to start their own business –Messrs Connes and Calvert. The presentation was by Charles James Appleby, a third generation Appleby who effectively then ran the firm – he said that he had known the two employees for 20 years. Mr. Connes however said that he was the ‘first man to be employed at the firm some 30 years ago’ - and if he was talking about the Greenwich works the date of the dinner would have been in 1916 – by which time Charles James Appleby was long dead, so something doesn’t (again) a make a lot of sense.

Anyway after the dinner they toasted ‘The firm of Messrs Appleby’, ‘The staff and the Employees’, ‘The Visitors’ and ‘The new firm of Connes and Calvert’. Then there was some excellent singing and ‘the proceedings terminated with the National Anthem’.

From 1866 they had a branch in Leicester under Joseph Jessup and later in the 1890s they became Appleby & Jessup – but seem to

have been taken over by Crayford based Vickers & Maxim. I am very confused about when they actually left Greenwich. They produced a catalogue with all sorts of pumps, engines and devices – but what was made in Greenwich? In later years – under Vickers – they made all sorts of cranes and transporters but these are said to have been made in Leicester.

From May 1910 they were Appleby Crane and Transporter Co.Ltd. and

I was once told that the Temperley Transporter at South Met. Gas’s Ordinance Wharf came from them – I have a picture of it all crumpled up and wrecked after a storm.

Applebys were an important engineering firm who made many innovative structures around the world, and much much else.

I wish I could pin down which of them were made in Greenwich.

public notices THE GREENWICH (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION OF TRAFFIC) (THE UNDERWOOD) ORDER 2017 The Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, being the traffic authority for The Underwood and being satisfied that traffic in this road should be restricted to allow PMC Foundation LTD to carry out a sewer connection and a BT supply. The provisions of Article 3 of this Order shall apply only at such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by the placing of the appropriate traffic signs prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016(b).

Nothing in Article 3 shall apply in relation to any person causing any vehicle to enter that length of road referred to in Article 3 for the purpose of gaining access to premises fronting upon that road or accessible only therefrom, provided that the extent of the said works makes this possible.
