Stay safe this autumn Autumn is all about falling leaves, Halloween, bonfires and fireworks – enjoy this season safely by following our top tips!

At the time of going to print, you must not socialise with people from other households indoors, and can only meet with other households socially in groups of no more than six outdoors

Fireworks and bonfires You must not light bonfires or set off fireworks on council housing estates.

If your home has its own garden and you’re planning to use fireworks or light a fire: • do not set off fireworks after 11pm if you’re doing it before bonfire night. On bonfire night don’t set them off after midnight (you can’t set off fireworks after 1am on Diwali or New Year’s Eve) • only buy fireworks if you’re over 18 years old and make sure they have the CE mark

• follow instructions and use eye protection and gloves • never set off fireworks near animals • never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire • build your bonfire away from buildings, sheds, fences and hedges and check for any wildlife • do not burn wet wood, plastic or rubbish • make sure that the fire is out, and surroundings are made safe before leaving.

The trick or treat tradition with many children ringing on doorbells and rummaging in bowls of sweets is not a risk anyone should be taking. But there's a great alternative way to go on a spooky adventure.

Rather than knock on people's doors, why not go on a pumpkin hunt instead? People in the area are bound to have pumpkins in their windows, so set off with the children you care for in groups of no more than six, and for every pumpkin you spot, you can give the little ones a treat!

Decorations, costumes and pumpkins can still very much be part of your celebrations, so here are our tips to make sure that your Halloween is (ghoulishly) green.

Pumpkins Every year so much pumpkin is wasted! Check out what you can do instead of throwing it away.

• Turn it into soup!

• Turn your empty pumpkin into a planter - you just need to line them with weed fabric • If you don’t reuse your pumpkin, put it in your green top bin or home compost.

Costumes A report warned that Halloween costumes can create up to 2,000 tonnes of plastic waste. Help stop this from happening!

Decorations There are so many ways to make fun decorations at home, without buying lots of plastic ones!

• Paint your used toilet roll tubes to turn them into ghosts, witches, zombies or other spooky decorations!

You could even put treats inside and hide them around the house for some Halloween hide and seek!

• A bit of flour, water and newspaper can make papiermâché monsters from newspaper.

Spook yourselves silly at this historic site

Tom Lehrer was a master of satire in his day, but many of his songs would be interpreted as a little too on the nose by today’s standards. Still, travelling through Lehrer’s 60-year back catalogue to bring some of his most poignant numbers back into the spotlight is pianist, vocalist and all-round entertainer Peter Gill. The resulting 90-minute show, Politically Incorrect, is a chance to giggle wickedly while listening to the likes of Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, When You Are Old and Grey and Oedipus Rex.

While creepily themed club nights are cancelled this year, the chills and thrills of Halloween can be found in abundance at the Old Royal Naval College’s Painted Hall. The venue’s first ever Halloween Late, the event is riddled with haunting ghost stories and live music. Historical performance collective History Riot will be telling terrifying tales of strange occurrences involving a giddy cast of unfortunate souls, from sailors and nurses to sea monsters and long-dead inhabitants of Greenwich past. Those who dare venture underground to the Painted Hall Café can refuel with a selection of snacks as well as drinks courtesy of the Old Brewery.

Last chance: browse 700 unique record sleeves NOW Gallery on Greenwich Peninsula is hosting the seventh and final installment of the Secret 7” exhibition, an anonymous charity record sleeve sale which brings together leading names in the worlds of music and art to produce 700 unique record sleeves. Trinity Laban is marking Black History Month with two lunchtime concerts, both featuring additional talks and performances, to celebrate the music of black composers. Right Hand Man: comedian Richard Stott live at Greenwich Theatre Comedian Richard Stott knows a thing or two about growing up with a physical disability in an image-obsessed world. He was born with Poland Syndrome, a condition which made him ‘lopsided with a misshapen hand’. He’s learned to laugh about it and perform entire shows around it too, elevating the status of his condition from taboo to something audiences can talk about openly. Richard is bringing his critically-acclaimed 2019 show Right Hand Man to Greenwich Theatre this Sunday – his first performance in front of a live audience since lockdown. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Richard Stott to find out what’s in store…

Holly O’Mahony: Tell us a bit about your journey into comedy. What first made you give it a go and when did you realise you could make a career out of it?

Richard Stott: I’d been working in theatre for a number of years and after a while of being a bit fed up with lack of opportunities I decided to write a one man show. I wanted it to be an autobiographical account of growing up with a slight disability. Looking back on it, I think my writing was influenced by comedians I was listening to at the time and the more I wrote it the more I realised that it lent itself to stand-up. Now I’d never performed standup so I did a couple of open mic gigs to get the feel of it and then, if I’m brutally honest, took my first show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a severe lack of experience.

But somehow it worked and the show was well received. Pretty quickly I realised that I was good enough to pursue this and that I enjoyed the control over my career it gave me as opposed to being a jobbing actor.

HOM: You use comedy as a way of destigmatising your birth defect, Poland Syndrome. Do you find this cathartic?

And, would you say it’s a chance to raise awareness of the condition?

theatre RS: If it does any of that then it’s an added bonus. I’m not a motivational speaker or a Ted Talker. I’m on the stage to make people laugh. The difference is I just have a slightly more unusual story than most people, but ultimately I’m just talking about my life and the way it makes me view the world, which is what most comics do.

Is it cathartic? Possibly, but not to a point that it’s part of my self care. To me comedy isn’t therapy; I go to actual therapy for that. If people come to me looking for inspiration and hope then they might be disappointed as I don’t set out to paint a rosy picture and tell everyone things are going to be ok. But if you come looking to laugh at things that you thought you couldn’t then I’m your guy and we’ll have a great time.

HOM: You weren’t always comfortable talking about your condition. What changed for you and when?

RS: There was a period in my late teens to my early 20s where I really struggled with body image and worried about making people feel awkward.

In fact, I was always comfortable talking about my condition if someone asked, but it took a long time for me to start bringing it up myself. So I was awkward bringing it up, other people were nervous to ask me about it so it became a bit of an elephant in the room. How this changed is one of the best stories in the show, so you won’t mind if I don’t give it away…

HOM: How do audiences respond to you delivering sets about your

disability? And what do you hope to achieve through your routines?

How are you feeling about it?

RS: You can sometimes see people feeling like they shouldn’t be laughing but it’s my job to put them at ease and make them feel they have permission to laugh. If they take away a new found confidence about any insecurities they may have or feel more comfortable talking to a friend about a difficult subject, then great, but it means nothing if they didn’t laugh in the process.

RS: It will be my first outing and I am understandably nervous.

However, I can’t wait to do the show and be back on the stage again.

HOM: Do you have any advice for those hoping to get into comedy?

Perhaps about finding their voice?

RS: Just write about what you find funny, not what you think other people find funny. That’s your voice.

HOM: This year’s coronavirus outbreak has had disastrous consequences for the performing arts. How was the experience of lockdown for you?

RS: It’s been awful, hasn’t it? I got some work done, wrote a sitcom pilot and worked on creating an online version of Right Hand Man, which I’ll be performing in November. But the lack of live performance has been a real blow; as comics most of our social life is involved with gigging and seeing our peers there. That’s the bit that doesn’t get mentioned. I’ve done my fair share of virtual shows... but there’s nothing like a live show. Nothing.

HOM: Will your Greenwich Theatre gig be your first time performing

HOM: You’ll be performing your 2019 show Right Hand Man. Have you adapted it in any way to reference the pandemic?

RS: It is a revamped version of the show in the sense that I have retouched the script and improved the jokes and stories. However I am not intending on including the events of the last seven months. It would be too big a change to the flow of the piece to crowbar in.

You can see my next show for that, I guess; come to this one for some escapism from the never ending doom bonanza the world has become.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope those who see your show live at Greenwich Theatre take away from the experience?

RS: Fun! And a chance to soak up the thrill of being in a room full of people laughing at some common ground.

I just want everyone who comes to leave having had a better day.

Who was in the Cutty Sark crew?

Far from being a white-washed, exclusively British affair, the crew on board Greenwich’s famous tea clipper Cutty Sark came from all over the world. Together, they travelled the seven seas transporting various cargo – journeys which were often long and lonely, but a necessary part of the sailor experience. South east Londonbased group BLKBRD Collective is hosting a three-part series of creative workshops to bring to life a fictional narrative for the ship. Exploring themes of memory and migration, you’ll work with BLKBRD to resurface the forgotten histories of migrants, explore the historical role Britain played in the tea trade and ponder the dreams of migrant workers sleeping in London.

Athletes join CACT’s Black History Month celebrations

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has been celebrating Black History Month throughout October.

At the beginning of the month, CACT produced a statement on why it is proud to support it, and the work being done to promote equality and diversity.

An extract from the statement is below:

Anyway the ‘Halloween’ that I am dealing with here has nothing to with witches or goblins – or even the churches’ festival of All Hallows (or the Thames Estuary resort come to that). This Halloween was another big sailing ship.

Readers will remember that a couple of weeks ago I did an article about the sailing clipper Blackadder. Well, Halloween was her sister ship built alongside her at the Maudslay Son & Field shipyard at Bay Wharf on the Greenwich Peninsula. I am however very aware that other people have already recently done a very good job on writing up Halloween.

David Ramzan devotes about a quarter of his ‘Three Greenwich Built Ships’ to Halloween, which had the reputation of being one of the fastest ships of her day.

mainyard from which flew a huge mainsail - three masts with sails to catch every bit of wind, and a hold which would take sixteen hundred tons. She was very very fast and on her return voyage to London from Shangai she took just 92 days – beating the previous record by 30 days. On her next voyage she did it in a day less – 91 days. In 1880 she raced Blackadder from Foochow to Deal - Blackadder did it in 130 days, and Halloween in 126. At the same time there were all sorts of ‘goings on’ wth the crew and various ship’s officers – but you will need to read what David Ramzan has to say in his long account of Halloween.

Halloween was eventually wrecked off the Devon coast. It is a long and harrowing story which I can’t possibly detail here. Coming fast up past the Eddystone light in a gale, returning from Foochow she missed her way and ran aground at 7.45 at Sewer Mill Cove south of Salcombe.

The crew sent off distress signals and nothing happened. They took to the masts as the ship flooded and began to break up. Eventually two crew members tried to swim ashore – but only one made it. By then it was light and a local farmer saw the wreck – and alerted the coastguard. It was after 11 am before the lifeboat got the crew back to land.

So – basically the litigation all began again! In Devon there were strong feelings about the circumstances of her wreck. The inquest into the drowned crew member was held at the nearby farmhouse with many

searching questions from the Coroner about the arrangements at the coastguard station – echoed by the jury. The two coastguard officers in charge that night were sacked. Her wreck was auctioned off to a salvage company. She had been laden with tea – much of which was recovered albeit it was a bit – well – wet! There were a number of prosecutions from public health officials about the disposal of that tea - to a defence that it was alright really, just tasted a bit strange, and they were going to send it Spain anyway.

In February 1990, Steve Carpenter took his dog for a walk along the beach and to his surprise the previously sandy beach had become all rocks. When a diver went out, he realised that he was above a huge wreck which had appeared in an area which they had often dived before. ‘Underneath me was a huge hatch, part of a bow and a

massive mast lying out across the sand … you could see the remains of the once proud bowsprit with wood decking all around… and a complete porthole glinting in the sunbeams. Now I knew what heaven was going to be like!’

Most interestingly, that porthole had been made by Stones of Deptford, clearly the subcontractor to Maudslay.

Today Sewer Mill is Soar Mill and there is a hotel, flower beds and amazing sea views. The hotel websites only know Halloween as an amusing night for children. But Halloween is still out there nearer home than Blackadder at Bahia.

But to be honest the Brazilians seem much more interested in Blackadder than Devon does in Halloween. She came all the way from the Greenwich Peninsula – a very fast ship, with lots of litigation. www.weekender.co.uk

Everyone aged 16 and over across England and Wales can download the app for free and play their part in combating the pandemic.

DOWNLOADING THE NHS COVID-19 app is a vital way in which we can all play our part in tracking the spread of the virus while protecting those we love.

Many across England and Wales have already downloaded the app, which includes a range of features, from inputting symptoms to quickly alerting you if you are at risk from coronavirus.

Everyone aged 16 and older can now download the app onto their smartphone for free.

It works by logging the time and distance a user has spent near other app users, so is able to alert them if that person subsequently tests positive.

Designed to the highest standards of data privacy and data security, it tracks the virus, not people.

The app doesn’t hold any personal information such as name, address or date of birth. And it only requires the first half of your postcode to ensure local outbreaks can best be managed.

For some features – such as booking a test – the app may require more information from the user, but only with their explicit consent.

The app can also alert you to the virus risk level in your local area, based on the first part of your postcode. On average this covers 8,000 households and, as such, does not personally identify you.

It also allows you to check in at venues by scanning a QR code so you can be notified quickly and anonymously if there’s an outbreak.

The app cannot track your location. It doesn’t need to know who anyone is or where they are.

As you come into contact with other app users, your phones automatically exchange random codes that alert the app if you have been near anyone for more than 15 minutes and at a distance of less than two metres.

These codes cannot be used by the NHS, government or anyone to identify who you are or who you’ve spent time with.

If someone later reports a positive test result, the app sends an anonymous alert to anyone who may be at risk.

The codes are random, encrypted and deleted after 14 days.

It operates using low-energy Bluetooth rather than GPS and will not drain your battery.

To help decide on how to spend the money, the Council asked residents what their park priorities were and what improvements they’d like to see.

The survey was extremely helpful – more than 2,600 people took part – and showed 87% of people viewed the borough’s parks as ‘very valuable’ and the top priorities for residents were basic maintenance, play areas, removal of damaged facilities and nature and wildlife areas.

Works on these parks range from facilities maintenance, improved play areas, wildflower sowing, new park furniture (e.g. new benches, path improvements, etc.), tree planting and more. For a detailed list of what improvements each park will get, go to: royalgreenwich.gov.uk/parksimprovements These 11 have been chosen as the parks that are most in need of restoration, however, if there is some left over from the £1 million then other sites could also benefit.

Cllr Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Equalities said: “This investment is extremely exciting; it will give the borough’s parks a new lease of life and will provide our residents with enjoyable wellmaintained places to visit for years to come.”

Some of the works are due to begin late 2020/early 2021.
